- speaker-0: I don't think it's their intention to make us feel very sad, but they're very curated and they look awesome and their kids all look obedient, and it causes us to think I obviously am not measuring up. And that comparison we know that's the thief of joy. speaker-1: In your book, I know you get detailed about some of the spiritual disciplines that we can bring in, but what are some simple daily practices that can help a parent notice their triggers, slow down, and bring those tender spots to Jesus? speaker-0: I think one of the best practices is putting our phones down. And that's probably one of the hardest things to do. we're so worn out, we like the dopamine hit for sure. ⁓ but we're seeing a lot of mom influencers on Instagram and other places that are making us feel very sad. And I don't think it's their intention to make us feel very sad, but they're very curated and they look awesome, and their kids all look obedient. And it causes us to think, I obviously am not measuring up. And that comparison, we know that's the thief of joy. And so pulling away from that and replacing it with the word of God, replacing it with ⁓ physical books, replacing it with taking a walk outside. ⁓ it not only will it transform you because you're no longer listen being discipled by our culture. But you're being discipled by the Lord and you're gonna have this augmentation of growth because you're listening to the word of God, you're listening to his voice, you're listening to good people who are walking with the Lord and not in sound bites, and you're retraining your mind to be intelligent and receptive and quiet. And that's really important. speaker-1: Hmm. Yeah. I know that a lot of for my husband and his journey with healing, a lot for him has been like listening to podcasts. So he's just kind of like listening to these really wise people. And then I know I've been I listened to audiobooks. And so just trying to pour good stuff into my brain because my brain has been, and sometimes the hardest thing for me is the quiet element. speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: 'Cause I'm not used to that. Like and it's hard in a busy household to find quiet. So it's that's yeah. So of like the spiritual disciplines, what would you say was one that's been the most impactful to you? speaker-0: No, for me, honestly, it has been to rapid read the Bible, which feels like a really hard thing to say to moms. But I had two moms join me on it ⁓ this ⁓ January and it changed their lives. And so of all the spiritual practices that I've done in my whole life, reading the Bible in sixty or ninety days has changed me forever. Ooh. And I yeah Yeah, yeah. About forty five minutes a day. So I had to put my phone down and and able to in order to do it. But if you feel like you don't have a grasp of the meta-narrative of scripture, if you don't feel like you understand the whole scope of the story, reading it in a truncated period of time, even though it's a challenge, that's why it's called a challenge, ⁓ will absolutely revolutionize your life. And you will also see the relentless heart of the Lord, his Hesed, his Covenantal love that he we always think of him we think of him wrongly in the old testament as like a crabby guy who doesn't like people. And then Jesus is like the cool hippie guy that loves everyone. But ⁓ no, you see this relentless love of the Lord pursuing the nation of Israel. And it is like almost I want to shake the Lord. Like, how come you're giving them more chances? This is ridiculous. And you just see that if he feels that way about me, he also feels that way. About my children. And he is relentlessly pursuing the heart of my children far more than I can ever do. And there's just this deep satisfaction that comes in knowing God's on the throne and he's doing that. There's also solace in knowing that Adam and Eve had a perfect parent and they went astray. So if you have little sinners in your house, you can realize that. Even having a perfect parent doesn't prevent kids from straying. And so that takes off a lot of the shame and the pain that comes from we think if our child rebels then it's our fault. And we always need to examine our hearts, but on the whole, they're just a bunch of sinners who want to do their own thing. And we have to do our best not to take all the f blame for that. speaker-2: This episode of Homeschool Insights is brought to you by BJU Press Homeschool, CTC Math, and the Explorer Bible for Kids.
