- 0:09Dr. Bob Lawrence: Today, I want to talk about confidence.
- 0:12Dr. Bob Lawrence: Many people believe confidence comes first.
- 0:16Dr. Bob Lawrence: They think confident students are simply born that way.
- 0:21Dr. Bob Lawrence: But in music education, the opposite is usually true.
- 0:26Dr. Bob Lawrence: Confidence is not the starting point.
- 0:29Dr. Bob Lawrence: It is the result.
- 0:31Dr. Bob Lawrence: Real confidence grows from preparation.
- 0:36Dr. Bob Lawrence: It grows from showing up each week, practicing with intention, solving problems, and gradually mastering one skill after another.
- 0:48Dr. Bob Lawrence: That is why we place so much emphasis on structure.
- 0:53Dr. Bob Lawrence: When students understand what they are learning, why they are learning it, and how each lesson builds upon the last, uncertainty begins to disappear.
- 1:05Dr. Bob Lawrence: And as uncertainty disappears, confidence begins to grow.
- 1:10Dr. Bob Lawrence: Not because someone says, good job, but because students know they can do it.
- 1:16Dr. Bob Lawrence: That kind of confidence cannot be handed to someone.
- 1:20Dr. Bob Lawrence: It must be earned.
- 1:22Dr. Bob Lawrence: It is built through competence.
- 1:25Dr. Bob Lawrence: Over time, students begin to trust themselves.
- 1:28Dr. Bob Lawrence: They become willing to attempt difficult music, accept correction, and embrace challenges they once avoided.
- 1:37Dr. Bob Lawrence: The confidence they develop at the piano, the guitar, voice, or any instrument often extends far beyond music.
- 1:47Dr. Bob Lawrence: It becomes confidence in learning itself.
- 1:51Dr. Bob Lawrence: Because lasting confidence isn't built through praise alone.
- 1:56Dr. Bob Lawrence: It is built through preparation, perseverance, and progress.
- 2:02Dr. Bob Lawrence: Thanks for spending a minute with me today.
- 2:05Dr. Bob Lawrence: Until next time, enjoy the journey as you continue to discover, learn, and play.
