Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families podcast.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It's the podcast for the time poor parent who just
- 0:09Speaker 2: wants answers.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Now, slow things down, turn off the phone, turn off
- 0:12Speaker 3: the email, and just concentrate on our family, our goals,
- 0:16Speaker 3: the stuff that matters most, and enjoy being together.
- 0:18Speaker 1: And now here's the stars of our show, my mum
- 0:22Speaker 1: and Dad.
- 0:22Speaker 3: So we began this podcast about fifteen times because I
- 0:25Speaker 3: couldn't work out how to start it. Kylie really wanted
- 0:27Speaker 3: me to sing at the top of my lungs because
- 0:30Speaker 3: we've had a funny story happened in the last week
- 0:32Speaker 3: or so that we wanted to share with you. This
- 0:33Speaker 3: is doctor Justin Coulson. I'm the founder of Happy Families
- 0:36Speaker 3: dot com dot You'm here with Kylie, missus Happy Families
- 0:38Speaker 3: mum to our six daughters, and every Friday we talk
- 0:41Speaker 3: about I'll do better tomorrow, the reflections and responses to
- 0:46Speaker 3: the week that was, what worked, what didn't. How can
- 0:48Speaker 3: we be better parents if we were to be more
- 0:49Speaker 3: intentional about it starting.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Today tomorrow, whatever it might be.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Kylie, I want you to share this story because this
- 0:55Speaker 3: is really your experience. But before you do that, I
- 0:58Speaker 3: just want to make one quick mention and that is that.
- 1:01Speaker 1: The school holidays are here.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Today's the last day of school for the Eastern seaboard
- 1:06Speaker 3: at least, and oh my goodness, it feels so good.
- 1:08Speaker 3: First South Australia, Western Australia. One more week to go
- 1:11Speaker 3: and then everyone gets to breathe a sigh of relief.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Routine changes. Hopefully, if you're not in a lockdown place, you.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Get to go away. Woohoo. All right, I've got that
- 1:21Speaker 1: off my chest.
- 1:21Speaker 3: I'm just so I'm so excited for school holidays this
- 1:24Speaker 3: time around.
- 1:25Speaker 1: And I just wanted to mention that.
- 1:27Speaker 3: So you had a funny story happened to you the
- 1:29Speaker 3: other day, and I reckon it deserves a couple of
- 1:31Speaker 3: minutes of podcast time.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I was chatting with a friend just the other day.
- 1:35Speaker 2: She's not even a mum yet, she's not even married yet.
- 1:39Speaker 2: But she was having this quandary over the fact that
- 1:41Speaker 2: when she does have children, she's really scared that they're
- 1:45Speaker 2: not going to appreciate all of this beautiful music that's
- 1:48Speaker 2: out there, old school classics. She thinks that there's a
- 1:53Speaker 2: chance that her children just might miss out on all
- 1:55Speaker 2: the joy that she's experienced in her lifetime.
- 1:58Speaker 3: I've experienced exactly the same fear because I care so
- 2:00Speaker 3: much about music.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Well, you and I grew up in really different homes.
- 2:04Speaker 2: My mom was just a stickler for spiritual music, and
- 2:08Speaker 2: so my whole upbringing was just listening to the church choir.
- 2:13Speaker 1: And strict like so strict.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I mean, you pretty much listened to more than tabernacle
- 2:18Speaker 3: choir sort of music.
- 2:19Speaker 1: That was it.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Church choirs, big pipe organs, that was your thing. And
- 2:24Speaker 3: then you went and married and a radio announcer, a
- 2:27Speaker 3: guy that worked on those FM stations.
- 2:29Speaker 1: They're of the devil, don't let anyone hear that.
- 2:32Speaker 2: And you introduced me to a whole new world.
- 2:36Speaker 3: I remember the first time you came for a drive
- 2:38Speaker 3: with me, and you sat in the car and I
- 2:39Speaker 3: was flicking through the radio stations.
- 2:41Speaker 2: But the thing you used the steering wheel is a
- 2:43Speaker 2: drum drum kiting. Holy smokes, I thought you were going
- 2:47Speaker 2: to bash the door open, you were going so hard.
- 2:49Speaker 3: The thing that bothered you so much, though, was that
- 2:52Speaker 3: I was more interested in what the radio anouncers were
- 2:53Speaker 3: saying than what the music was. But I loved music
- 2:56Speaker 3: and you loved music. That we had these completely different orientations.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Thing that you could have said to your friend, was
- 3:02Speaker 3: what we do in our home to make sure that
- 3:04Speaker 3: our children don't miss out on finding out about all
- 3:06Speaker 3: of the amazing music that has existed over the last
- 3:09Speaker 3: five If you.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Had to let me finish the conversation, I did.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I told her you just make them learn that, and
- 3:16Speaker 1: she looked at me like, huh do you make them learn?
- 3:18Speaker 2: Said, well, in our house, we do this thing called
- 3:20Speaker 2: music appreciation right, regardless of whether they want to or not.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Most nights you say, okay, music appreciation time, and whatever
- 3:30Speaker 2: music you feel like listening to, we listen to it.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Come on now.
- 3:33Speaker 3: In fairness, it's not most nights. It's probably one night
- 3:35Speaker 3: a week, one night a fortnight. I'll say it's time
- 3:37Speaker 3: for music appreciation, and I make sure that it's diverse,
- 3:42Speaker 3: very So this just the other night, we listened to
- 3:46Speaker 3: Oh Fortuna.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I love this one, and the kids were like, what
- 3:53Speaker 1: is this? There's no drums? What's going on? But I
- 3:59Speaker 1: love the way that it bills, there's words to it
- 4:03Speaker 1: is not pomp bomb.
- 4:07Speaker 2: I was scaddy.
- 4:10Speaker 3: So this one is carl or Fortune And that was
- 4:12Speaker 3: our most recent music appreciation.
- 4:15Speaker 1: What else have we done?
- 4:16Speaker 3: We've done off my my all time favorite music appreciation
- 4:20Speaker 3: when I just think the children are not they're not
- 4:22Speaker 3: in harmony with what our family is about.
- 4:25Speaker 1: You know what I put on, don't you? Especially when
- 4:27Speaker 1: we're doing the dishes, you look like you're not appreciating this. No,
- 4:35Speaker 1: how long does the song go for? Like eleven minutes?
- 4:38Speaker 3: It's only five minutes, says November Rain. That goes for
- 4:40Speaker 3: eight minutes. Oh gosh, love a bit of Gunners.
- 4:44Speaker 1: There's there's I mean, that's that's high quality.
- 4:47Speaker 2: What's so funny, though, is as our children have grown up,
- 4:50Speaker 2: we have heard everything under the sun. They have winged
- 4:53Speaker 2: and complained, an eye rolled and been so frustrated at
- 4:57Speaker 2: times with the choices of music that you've introduced them too,
- 5:01Speaker 2: because we like.
- 5:01Speaker 1: To give them a diverse array, a wide variety. Like
- 5:05Speaker 1: so this is my influence, just saying a bit of.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Eccidy Wait in the world singer ki Wait.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Didn't know what I gotcha? What else do? We've given
- 5:20Speaker 1: them a bit of country music.
- 5:22Speaker 4: We love to give them a bit of country never
- 5:29Speaker 4: al I love that song, and we like to give
- 5:37Speaker 4: them a bit a bit of sort of old stuff
- 5:38Speaker 4: as well. Because as as your friend said, wouldn't it
- 5:41Speaker 4: be awful if the kids grew up and didn't know
- 5:43Speaker 4: songs like this.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Hell is for the way you look at me, Oh
- 5:53Speaker 1: is for.
- 5:55Speaker 3: This is the one where I dance with you in
- 5:56Speaker 3: the kitchen and the kids go, oh, stop it.
- 5:59Speaker 1: So all of this is really just to say one
- 6:01Speaker 1: really clear thing, and that is make your kids listen
- 6:05Speaker 1: to musics.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Teach them how great it is, even if you come
- 6:08Speaker 3: from diverse backgrounds.
- 6:09Speaker 1: It's so much fun. Look, that was probably a little
- 6:11Speaker 1: bit self indulgent.
- 6:11Speaker 3: We've probably spent a little bit too much time introducing
- 6:14Speaker 3: you to but again, I'll do better tomorrow. Is about
- 6:17Speaker 3: being intentional as parents. It might sound like we're being
- 6:19Speaker 3: self indulgent, but we're really clear about what we.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Want our kids to know.
- 6:24Speaker 3: And one of the things that's really important to us
- 6:27Speaker 3: is we want them to have a love of music.
- 6:30Speaker 3: And I kind of cut you off just a second ago,
- 6:32Speaker 3: but you were saying now that they're older, Well, now
- 6:34Speaker 3: that they're.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Older, what we're seeing is that all of that music
- 6:37Speaker 2: that we've introduced.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Them to that they hated and complained about.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Has introduced them to such an eclectic array of music.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Over the last few weeks we've talked about COVID and
- 6:47Speaker 2: the impact that it's having on families in such negative ways.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And one of the ways that we have found to
- 6:54Speaker 2: lift our spirits in any situation that we find ourselves
- 6:58Speaker 2: has been music. And it just has the power to
- 7:01Speaker 2: move us in ways that most other things don't.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Yeah, and except for our one daughter who listens to
- 7:06Speaker 3: nothing but Taylor Swift and One Dimension and Disney, oh
- 7:11Speaker 3: my goodness, except for her, our kids have got this
- 7:13Speaker 3: really broad taste. They love music. They love the old stuff,
- 7:17Speaker 3: they love the new stuff, they love the eclectic stuff,
- 7:19Speaker 3: they love the weirds. Like. It's just very exciting, so
- 7:22Speaker 3: real intention something fun with the kids music appreciation. Pull
- 7:26Speaker 3: out your old CDs, pull out your old playlists, pull
- 7:28Speaker 3: out your old cassettes where you used to record on
- 7:31Speaker 3: the radio if you are that old, and.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Share your kids stories about why these songs are important
- 7:38Speaker 2: to you.
- 7:38Speaker 3: First concert ever, first kiss, we're talking about music here.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Yeah, what was the song your first kiss?
- 7:45Speaker 4: Too? Right? Hello?
- 7:48Speaker 3: We used to kiss a lot to chard.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Oh come on, okay, let's move on.
- 7:58Speaker 3: I'll do better tomorrow is like I said, coming up
- 8:00Speaker 3: in just to set this is where we reflect on
- 8:01Speaker 3: the week that was the things that we've learned, the
- 8:03Speaker 3: way that we can be more intentional as parents and
- 8:05Speaker 3: make our family happier.
- 8:06Speaker 1: We're going to tell you what our highlights or low
- 8:08Speaker 1: lights wor right after the break.
- 8:10Speaker 3: It's the Happy Families Podcast.
- 8:12Speaker 5: Imagine a home where discipline got results without anyone having
- 8:16Speaker 5: to feel bad or in trouble. The do's and don'ts
- 8:18Speaker 5: of discipline as a webinar to help parents set limits
- 8:21Speaker 5: with love, compassion, and humanity. Find it now at happy
- 8:24Speaker 5: families dot com, dot au slash shop.
- 8:28Speaker 2: It's the Happy Families Podcast, The podcast for the time
- 8:30Speaker 2: poor parent who just wants answers Now, I feel like
- 8:32Speaker 2: I should have sung that somehow.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Let's hear it the music.
- 8:37Speaker 2: The music is just in me. Hey, I'm really excited
- 8:40Speaker 2: because we've had some really good experiences this week. Do
- 8:43Speaker 2: you want to go first on me?
- 8:44Speaker 1: I'm going to go first because my one's short and simple.
- 8:46Speaker 1: What are you saying?
- 8:47Speaker 3: We snuck away last Friday night? Your mum, out of
- 8:52Speaker 3: the blue, randomly said, hey, do you want to look
- 8:54Speaker 3: after the kids for the night so that you guys
- 8:55Speaker 3: can get away. I think she started doing it because
- 8:58Speaker 3: our four oldest and our old enough to not have
- 9:00Speaker 3: us not have to have supervision. She's only going to
- 9:03Speaker 3: look after two. See, once upon a time only she
- 9:06Speaker 3: had to look after all six if we wanted to have.
- 9:08Speaker 1: A night out. It was like, oh gosh, I can't
- 9:10Speaker 1: look after six kids.
- 9:11Speaker 3: But now that our eldest moved out and married, we've
- 9:13Speaker 3: got an eighteen year old and a seventeen year old
- 9:14Speaker 3: who were off working or hanging out with friends. And
- 9:17Speaker 3: then it's just the fourteen year old who loves to
- 9:19Speaker 3: hang out with one of her big sisters anyway, So
- 9:21Speaker 3: those four are taken care of. It's just our eleven
- 9:24Speaker 3: year old and our seven year old, and your Mum's like,
- 9:25Speaker 3: I can manage that, so she looked after them. On
- 9:28Speaker 3: Friday night for us, we took off for a night away.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Oh my goodness, how good did it feel? Regenerating, so recreative,
- 9:37Speaker 3: so wonderful to literally walk hand in hand along the
- 9:40Speaker 3: beach for what was it about an hour and a
- 9:41Speaker 3: half before breakfast on Saturday morning.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Now I'm really kicking myself. I didn't have my watch,
- 9:45Speaker 2: and I don't even know how.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Many steps I took, but it was just it was wonderful.
- 9:48Speaker 3: And I know that not everyone can do this because
- 9:50Speaker 3: I've lockdown or because of family circumstances and so on,
- 9:52Speaker 3: So I'm not trying to rub salt into the wound.
- 9:55Speaker 3: What I want to emphasize is whatever you can do
- 9:58Speaker 3: to have those mini breaks, those any vacations, even if
- 10:01Speaker 3: it's in your own home and it's just while the
- 10:03Speaker 3: children are out, whatever you can do to do that.
- 10:06Speaker 3: And again, for lockdown people, I know that it's coming.
- 10:08Speaker 3: I know that it's not here yet, but it's coming.
- 10:11Speaker 3: It's amazing what a little bit of space, a little
- 10:13Speaker 3: bit of distance does to help you to be better
- 10:15Speaker 3: as a person.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Other than one mini blow up that I've had.
- 10:18Speaker 3: This past week, It's just been such a great week
- 10:21Speaker 3: for me, and I attribute most of it to the
- 10:24Speaker 3: wonderful freedom and just the opportunity to be with you.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Slow things down, turn off the phone, turn off the email,
- 10:31Speaker 3: and just concentrate on our family, our goals, the stuff
- 10:34Speaker 3: that matters most, and enjoy being together. That's my old
- 10:37Speaker 3: Do better tomorrow if you can do it, and if
- 10:39Speaker 3: you can't, plan for it, because those lockdowns will end,
- 10:42Speaker 3: and those vaccination passports will be well. Whether we have
- 10:45Speaker 3: passports or not, you're gonna have the opportunity to get
- 10:47Speaker 3: out there and live your life. And this is something
- 10:48Speaker 3: that I think is so crucial to make your family stronger.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Well, one of our daughters had a birthday recently and
- 10:56Speaker 2: she asked for an ice cream cake. Yes, I've never
- 10:59Speaker 2: made an ice cream cake before, and I just couldn't
- 11:02Speaker 2: bring myself to buy the Fredo one from War Worse.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Yeah, another way putting any shame or judgment on parents
- 11:08Speaker 3: who choose the Freda one from War Worst.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Oh, I just don't like the taste of them. That's fine.
- 11:13Speaker 3: You were going to eat it though it was for
- 11:14Speaker 3: the kids. You were going to eat it. Oh gosh.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 11:19Speaker 2: So anyway, I decided that I would have a go.
- 11:23Speaker 2: I didn't have time to google how to make one.
- 11:25Speaker 1: But I forget.
- 11:26Speaker 2: It can't be so bad, right, it can't be so.
- 11:28Speaker 2: It can't be too hard. It's just melting some ice cream.
- 11:30Speaker 1: And then re is that what you did? You actually
- 11:33Speaker 1: melted the ice cream and then froze it again.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Well, you're not supposed to melt it completely, but you've
- 11:37Speaker 2: got to get it. You to soften it, soften it
- 11:39Speaker 2: enough so that you can put it in, but I
- 11:41Speaker 2: decided to be a bit tricky and so I put
- 11:42Speaker 2: layers of you know, crushed oreos and chocolates and things
- 11:47Speaker 2: through it. Well it didn't work. Let's just it just didn't.
- 11:50Speaker 2: It didn't work.
- 11:51Speaker 1: The thing is, you can't ruin it because it's ice cream.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Well that's kind of what I said to her. I
- 11:55Speaker 2: just said, I'm going to give it a go. I said,
- 11:57Speaker 2: I have no idea what it's going to work out like,
- 11:59Speaker 2: and at the end of the days going to taste
- 12:00Speaker 2: good no.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Matter what it looks like.
- 12:02Speaker 2: So we should put a picture up because it If
- 12:06Speaker 2: I was going for molten lava.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Green molten lava because you use peppermint chocchip ice cream,
- 12:12Speaker 1: I like nailed it. Yeah yeah, but I wasn't.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I wasn't going for malten lava. I did want this
- 12:19Speaker 2: beautiful ferm ice cream cake.
- 12:21Speaker 1: But the kids loved it. They said it was delicious.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Points for trying because it was ice cream. Of course
- 12:24Speaker 1: it was delicious.
- 12:25Speaker 3: But what we need to do is get you to
- 12:26Speaker 3: hang out with Hamish Blake for a little bit learning
- 12:28Speaker 3: how to big cakes.
- 12:29Speaker 1: For the kids.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Well, I'm sure that if I drank as much as
- 12:31Speaker 2: he did. I probably would have done amazing job.
- 12:34Speaker 5: Is about trade offs, like is the heck going to
- 12:35Speaker 5: be too big to have a delicious Tasmanian whiskey.
- 12:39Speaker 3: I don't think that it would have been a good
- 12:40Speaker 3: night at all, and I'm not sure that we would
- 12:43Speaker 3: have been eating anything that came out of our fridge.
- 12:45Speaker 3: We would have been down at the shop buying a
- 12:47Speaker 3: frozen Frew ice cream cake from more worse. So, is
- 12:51Speaker 3: that your old do better tomorrow?
- 12:53Speaker 1: No it isn't. Actually Oh okay, that was just a story.
- 12:56Speaker 1: It felt like gelling. Well, no, it was part of it.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I just got carried away, if I'm laugher cake.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Well, I hadn't actually had time to do what I
- 13:04Speaker 2: wanted to do. They were going to have a camp
- 13:05Speaker 2: out in the backyard, and so my plan was to
- 13:08Speaker 2: have the tent set up, all the bedding set up
- 13:10Speaker 2: for them when they got there.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I've got to pause you right here.
- 13:13Speaker 3: You've got this plan that the kids are going to
- 13:15Speaker 3: come over for this sleep out in the backyard party,
- 13:18Speaker 3: and that we're going to.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Do all the work.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Well, and when you told me that and the kids
- 13:22Speaker 3: were arriving, we had none. I was like, I'm not
- 13:24Speaker 3: putting the tent. If they want to sleep in the
- 13:27Speaker 3: ten in the backyard, they can put it up. I'm
- 13:29Speaker 3: putting the tent up.
- 13:30Speaker 2: That's a party who comes to a party to set
- 13:32Speaker 2: their own partyre it's a tent.
- 13:34Speaker 1: They can Okay, Well, the only reason I this is
- 13:36Speaker 1: going to be great fun for them. They're going to have.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Only reason I didn't have time to set it up
- 13:40Speaker 2: was because I wanted to be an awesome MoMA maker.
- 13:44Speaker 2: So anyway, you did suggest that they put it up, and.
- 13:46Speaker 1: I would suggest that's what they're doing.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Mortified. I was absolutely mortified, because no matter what happened,
- 13:52Speaker 2: you were safely tucked away in your office and I
- 13:55Speaker 2: was going to have to deal with whatever outcome happened.
- 14:00Speaker 2: We told our daughter that she was gonna have to
- 14:02Speaker 2: do it with her friends. You should have seen her face.
- 14:04Speaker 2: She was like, what wey, are you going to have
- 14:06Speaker 2: to set this up? Well, she told her friends will they.
- 14:08Speaker 1: They're like yes. I was so excited. That's what I'm saying.
- 14:12Speaker 1: It's part of the part of the experience, part of
- 14:14Speaker 1: the party.
- 14:14Speaker 2: They were knocking the door down, asking me where the
- 14:16Speaker 2: tent was so they could set it up. Well, we
- 14:18Speaker 2: had six stretches that needed to be set up. Usually
- 14:21Speaker 2: when we go camping, you set those stretches up and
- 14:24Speaker 2: there's a lot of really don't bad words that come
- 14:27Speaker 2: out of your mouth.
- 14:28Speaker 3: I don't use course language, but until you do these,
- 14:31Speaker 3: I don't use course language. I just want to be
- 14:34Speaker 3: but I do say the flaming thing.
- 14:35Speaker 2: I can't very bad words and you kick and you
- 14:39Speaker 2: scream and you have a massive.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Toddly tantrum, grunt and groan.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Can I tell you those kids set those things up
- 14:45Speaker 2: in about three minutes. I could not believe it. And
- 14:50Speaker 2: what I learned out of that situation was exactly what
- 14:52Speaker 2: you said. I don't have to do everything for them,
- 14:55Speaker 2: and in letting them participate, I actually facilitated an experience.
- 15:01Speaker 2: They had so much fun doing it, boys and girls.
- 15:05Speaker 2: They had a competition against each other to see who
- 15:07Speaker 2: could be the world champion stretcher build.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Up right, and then they went and had a swim
- 15:13Speaker 1: in the pool.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Yeah, and just had so much fun. Like it just
- 15:16Speaker 2: added to the event.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Bear in mind, this party was going to go for
- 15:18Speaker 3: like six hours before the boys went home, and then
- 15:21Speaker 3: the girls had the camp out in the tent. And
- 15:24Speaker 3: if they've got six hours, they can put the tent up.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Look, I was really surprised they even stayed in the tent.
- 15:29Speaker 2: They stayed in the tent all might so.
- 15:31Speaker 3: I'll do bet it tomorrow. Number one music appreciation. Be
- 15:34Speaker 3: intentional about what you want the kids to learn. It
- 15:36Speaker 3: might not be music, it might be craft, it might
- 15:38Speaker 3: be a sport, whatever it is, but really be intentional
- 15:41Speaker 3: about it. Number two, get some time away or do
- 15:44Speaker 3: something to strengthen your marriage or partnership relationship.
- 15:48Speaker 2: And number three, if you're really really scared about making
- 15:52Speaker 2: a birthday cake, just got ice cream because you can't
- 15:55Speaker 2: go wrong.
- 15:55Speaker 3: That's right, And I really enjoyed eating all of that
- 15:57Speaker 3: ice cream. That didn't come out of a bucket, It
- 15:59Speaker 3: just came out of this receptacle that you created for it.
