The Flight of Quetzalcoatl

This poem describes the journey of the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent. He was associated with the planet Venus, and his journey represents the disappearance of Venus as an evening star and its rebirth as a morning star eight to twelve days later.

This journey is told in many different versions. The present one is an English translation by Jerome Rothenberg from the Spanish prose translation by Angel María Garibay in the ‘Epica Nahuatl’. It can be found in the anthology ‘Technicians of the Sacred’ published by the University of California Press.
