- 0:00Speaker 1: You don't know what God is making while you're aching.
- 0:04Speaker 1: You don't know what God is making while you're aching.
- 0:08Speaker 1: You don't know what God is making. While you're crying.
- 0:10Speaker 1: You don't know what God is making while you're lonely.
- 0:13Speaker 1: You don't know what God is making while you're suffering.
- 0:16Speaker 1: But I declare unto you, he is making something. You
- 0:19Speaker 1: can't always see what the Master's doing. Only when we
- 0:23Speaker 1: look back, then we see that God had a plan
- 0:27Speaker 1: when all we had was pain. You know, the funniest
- 0:33Speaker 1: thing to me is that poor people think that rich
- 0:35Speaker 1: people don't get crushed. They think that if they had money,
- 0:42Speaker 1: they'd have everything. But crushing is the one thing in
- 0:46Speaker 1: the world that you can count on to be totally unbiased.
- 0:51Speaker 1: It is not one bit prejudice. If you're white, you
- 0:55Speaker 1: get crushed. If you're black, you get crushed. If you're younger,
- 0:59Speaker 1: you get rush. If you're old, you get crushed. If
- 1:01Speaker 1: you're female you get crushed. If you're male, you get crushed.
- 1:04Speaker 1: If you make a lot of money, you get crushed.
- 1:06Speaker 1: If you can't find a job, you get crushing. It's
- 1:08Speaker 1: not prejudice. It comes to every person's life. We all
- 1:12Speaker 1: experience seasons of death and desperation. Dreams dashed, relationships crumble,
- 1:22Speaker 1: businesses fall, and it seems like you're going to die.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Whether that business is a big corporate office bringing in
- 1:32Speaker 1: billions of dollars reporting to a shareholders, or whether it's
- 1:37Speaker 1: a mom and pop shop, a drag cleaning service, or
- 1:40Speaker 1: a cupcake shop, you go through changes. It is a
- 1:44Speaker 1: crushing that gives you wisdom. You cannot buy wisdom in
- 1:49Speaker 1: a story. You cannot get it in a jar. It
- 1:52Speaker 1: is a crushing that gives you wisdom. It is Nelson Mandela,
- 1:59Speaker 1: wrongfully in prison, shut up in a prison in the
- 2:03Speaker 1: middle of an island four years, never knowing that while
- 2:08Speaker 1: he wasn't an inmate, having food shoved to him like
- 2:11Speaker 1: a dog to eat off the ground, that he would
- 2:15Speaker 1: be the president of South Africa. And if he had
- 2:19Speaker 1: not endured the prison, he wouldn't make the presidency. It
- 2:23Speaker 1: is the prison that created the presidency. That is what
- 2:27Speaker 1: crushing is. It is the ability to endure the wisdom
- 2:32Speaker 1: of the vintner, for the vintnor knows.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Exactly where to crush you.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I know Nelson Mandela would not have picked such an
- 2:43Speaker 1: unsavory place to be president Most presidents don't go to
- 2:48Speaker 1: jail to be president. They go to Yale to be president.
- 2:55Speaker 1: But not Nelson. Nelson went to jail and he still
- 2:58Speaker 1: got there. To believe that in spite of the suffering,
- 3:02Speaker 1: you will still get there. That God has a watch
- 3:06Speaker 1: and it never loses time, and he knows exactly when
- 3:09Speaker 1: to raise you and exactly when to bring you out.
- 3:12Speaker 1: And when the stage is set and the time is right,
- 3:14Speaker 1: nobody can hold you down when God gets ready.
- 3:17Speaker 2: To raise you up.
- 3:22Speaker 1: But the problem with the seed is that it can't think,
- 3:26Speaker 1: so it doesn't understand the suffering, and it doesn't understand
- 3:29Speaker 1: the pain, and it can't hear me. And sometimes the
- 3:32Speaker 1: hardest part about being a preacher is that you want
- 3:35Speaker 1: so much for the people to get it, and sometimes
- 3:37Speaker 1: the people who need it the most, they really don't
- 3:39Speaker 1: really hear you. That you're on course when you're off course,
- 3:47Speaker 1: that you're planted when you thought you were buried. That
- 3:50Speaker 1: the only way up is to go down, That everything
- 3:55Speaker 1: in the kingdom is backwards, That if you exalt yourself,
- 4:00Speaker 1: he'll abase If you abase yourself, he'll exalt you. Death
- 4:05Speaker 1: is necessary to create life. Jesus says, I come that
- 4:09Speaker 1: you might have life and then dies because the cost
- 4:14Speaker 1: of life was death. Do you understand the words that
- 4:19Speaker 1: are coming out of my mouth that right now, those
- 4:23Speaker 1: of you that are watching and those of you that
- 4:25Speaker 1: are listening at me maybe going through something that seems
- 4:29Speaker 1: unbearable and painful and personal and difficult to articulate to
- 4:33Speaker 1: anybody else, because pain.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Is always personal. How wrong?
- 4:37Speaker 1: It's not right, It's not right. It wasn't right for
- 4:41Speaker 1: my daughter to be pregnant. I'm a bishop seen all
- 4:44Speaker 1: over the country. It's not right for us to have
- 4:47Speaker 1: a private moment in a public place. It's not right
- 4:50Speaker 1: that my mother, who was the smartest person I have
- 4:52Speaker 1: ever seen in my life, would gradually have her mind
- 4:56Speaker 1: peel back like an onion until she couldn't tell.
- 4:58Speaker 2: A banana from an oich. Not right.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Sometimes it is necessary in order to cultivate in the vineyard,
- 5:05Speaker 1: you have to disrupt the soil. You have to turn
- 5:08Speaker 1: it over, you have to disrupt everything around it. You
- 5:11Speaker 1: have to pull some weeds. Sometimes you got to uproot
- 5:14Speaker 1: some plants. You have to cast this evil in order
- 5:18Speaker 1: to get where you want to go. And it's messy
- 5:20Speaker 1: and it's dirty, and it's not right, but it's necessary,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and we feel pain, and sometimes it's pain we don't
- 5:28Speaker 1: even have anybody to talk to about private secret pain,
- 5:33Speaker 1: pain locked up behind your lips, pain behind your makeup,
- 5:36Speaker 1: pain behind your nice clothes. Sometimes you dress up to
- 5:40Speaker 1: hide so nobody can see how deep down inside you're hurting.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Intimacy is into me, see and yet nobody sees into me.
- 5:50Speaker 1: And so I paint this face of who you think
- 5:52Speaker 1: I am and smile the way you want me to smile,
- 5:55Speaker 1: and I perform for you. And that's the only reason
- 5:58Speaker 1: I get tired of you, because I yearned to take
- 6:02Speaker 1: the mask off and be who I really am and
- 6:04Speaker 1: say I am confused, and I am hurting, and I
- 6:07Speaker 1: am suffering. And this crushing feels like death. The death
- 6:12Speaker 1: of my ideas is the birthing place of his purpose.
- 6:18Speaker 1: God works in crushing, and it pleased him to bruise it.
- 6:28Speaker 2: It please God to bruise us.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Not because he is sadistic, not because we are massaconic.
- 6:38Speaker 1: It pleases him to bruise us because he knows that
- 6:40Speaker 1: the end result will put us in a state where
- 6:44Speaker 1: we can no longer ferment, where we can handle a
- 6:47Speaker 1: set back of disappointment where we can handle a hurt.
- 6:51Speaker 2: See, wine doesn't spoil.
- 6:54Speaker 1: It'll lasts for years and years and years in the
- 6:57Speaker 1: dark in the basement, in the cellar, because it's been
- 7:00Speaker 1: through enough crushing to endure time. And you can tell
- 7:05Speaker 1: when a person has been crushed because they are survivors,
- 7:09Speaker 1: people who have been crushed, our survivors. When my church
- 7:13Speaker 1: emptied down and we were going through COVID and I
- 7:15Speaker 1: had to preach in an empty building by myself, it
- 7:17Speaker 1: was no problem because I started preaching in an empty building.
- 7:21Speaker 1: And I don't need people in order to do what
- 7:23Speaker 1: God called me to do. I don't need plots. I
- 7:26Speaker 1: don't need clipping. I don't need shouting. I don't need dancing.
- 7:29Speaker 1: I don't need an organ. All I need is what's
- 7:31Speaker 1: in me. If God is inside of you, all crushing
- 7:35Speaker 1: will do is push him out. And I had this
- 7:41Speaker 1: final remark, if Satan were smart, he would never push
- 7:47Speaker 1: because if you never pushed me, I wouldn't secrete the glory.
- 7:53Speaker 1: If you never pushed me, I would have never found
- 7:56Speaker 1: out who I was. If you never pushed me, I
- 7:58Speaker 1: would have never found out what I could do. If
- 8:01Speaker 1: you never pushed me, I would have never found out
- 8:03Speaker 1: what I could be. But the more we are afflicted,
- 8:08Speaker 1: the Bible says, the more we grow. So if you
- 8:12Speaker 1: feel like you're being afflicted, and if you feel like
- 8:14Speaker 1: you're dying, and if you feel like he's pushing on you,
- 8:17Speaker 1: hang in there. The best is yet to come now.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Unto him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly above
- 8:32Speaker 1: all that we may ask or think, according to the
- 8:35Speaker 1: power that works in us, simply means that the seed
- 8:39Speaker 1: doesn't know what it's becoming. If he's able to do
- 8:44Speaker 1: exceedingly abundantly above all that we may ask or think,
- 8:48Speaker 1: that means we have no idea of what he's making.
- 8:51Speaker 1: When he's making us. And the seed doesn't know what
- 8:56Speaker 1: the vintnor is doing, he just has to trust him,
- 9:02Speaker 1: constricted it to his methods, imprisoned by his purpose, locked
- 9:07Speaker 1: up in a situation where you just have to trust him.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I didn't wake up the person you see today, not
- 9:18Speaker 1: by long shide nowhere close. If you would have met
- 9:22Speaker 1: me at eighteen and told me that I would end
- 9:25Speaker 1: up being this, I would have laughed in your face.
- 9:29Speaker 1: If you'd have told me at sixteen that I would
- 9:31Speaker 1: end up here, all of my neighbors would have laughed
- 9:34Speaker 1: in you. My classmates would have laughed in your face.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I was a ratchet little boy, but I didn't know
- 9:42Speaker 1: what God was making. I thought I was going to
- 9:46Speaker 1: be a musician. I didn't know what God was making.
- 9:48Speaker 1: But little by little, step by step, day by day,
- 9:51Speaker 1: situation by situation, he was leading me into my purpose
- 9:54Speaker 1: and destiny, not only by the doors that open, but
- 9:59Speaker 1: by the door or said close. From humble beginnings, I
- 10:06Speaker 1: mean we were poe. Poe is when you cannot afford
- 10:12Speaker 1: the ore. My idea of rich people were people who
- 10:18Speaker 1: had grants in their yards. Rich people were people who
- 10:22Speaker 1: had air conditioning, and a doorbell meant you were wealthy.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Just a doorbell.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I couldn't imagine having a doorbell with the chimes that
- 10:32Speaker 1: ring and the little things that hunt down.
- 10:34Speaker 2: It was amazing. I saw them on TV.
- 10:38Speaker 1: What I had was a raggedy screen door that was
- 10:40Speaker 1: cut down at the bottom and a sunken porch where
- 10:43Speaker 1: the concrete had rotted out of the middle of it.
- 10:45Speaker 1: And I had to step over to come into the house.
- 10:48Speaker 1: And if you didn't fasten the screen door, it swing open.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And that's where I came from, but I didn't know
- 10:56Speaker 1: what God was making, and it wasn't necessary that I
- 11:00Speaker 1: come from there. Because of the heights He would take
- 11:03Speaker 1: me to. I would never have to question in myself
- 11:07Speaker 1: why I do what I do, because I did it broke,
- 11:12Speaker 1: and I did it lonely, and I did it with
- 11:14Speaker 1: no money, and I did it with no car, and
- 11:16Speaker 1: I did it with my lights off, and I did
- 11:19Speaker 1: it in the crushing. So that now, as He begins
- 11:22Speaker 1: to bring me into my senior years, I can see
- 11:25Speaker 1: God doing things with me that I never imagine possible.
- 11:30Speaker 1: That I would be sitting across from Oprah Winfrey on
- 11:34Speaker 1: her show was something I never asked for. That I
- 11:39Speaker 1: would sit down with the CEO of AT and T,
- 11:43Speaker 1: then Randall Stevenson and have a discussion about equity. It
- 11:49Speaker 1: is something that I can imagine AT and T, that
- 11:54Speaker 1: I would be closing on property right next to Tyler
- 11:57Speaker 1: Perry Studios.
- 12:00Speaker 2: That it's got grass, I mean, it's got really grass.
- 12:06Speaker 1: That I would write books that were translated into multiple
- 12:10Speaker 1: languages around the world. Woman and Our Luses has been
- 12:13Speaker 1: translated into twelve different languages. They say it's Japanese. I
- 12:19Speaker 1: can't read it. But I trust that that's what it is.
- 12:22Speaker 1: It's Mandarin and in Chinese. I can't read it, but
- 12:25Speaker 1: I trust it that's what it is. That that would
- 12:27Speaker 1: come out of a guy who was just writing short
- 12:30Speaker 1: stories in the eighth grade. I can't understand it. You
- 12:35Speaker 1: don't know what God is making while you're aching. You
- 12:40Speaker 1: don't know what God is making while you're aching. You
- 12:43Speaker 1: don't know what God is making while you're crying. You
- 12:46Speaker 1: don't know what God is making while you're lonely. You
- 12:48Speaker 1: don't know what God is making while you're suffering. But
- 12:51Speaker 1: I declare unto you, he is making something. You may
- 12:55Speaker 1: feel dislocated, you may feel dislarged. You can't always see
- 12:59Speaker 1: what the Master's doing. Only when we look back, then
- 13:03Speaker 1: we see that God had a plan. When all we
- 13:06Speaker 1: had was pain, God had a plan. I had no
- 13:11Speaker 1: idea that my daughter getting prayed. I hated it.
- 13:14Speaker 2: It hurt.
- 13:15Speaker 1: It's not about embarrassment, it wasn't about image. It was
- 13:19Speaker 1: my baby girl. It was about her future, about her destiny.
- 13:24Speaker 1: And I thought, this is a mistake, this is wrong,
- 13:27Speaker 1: this is wrong. This can't happen, This can't.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Happen to us.
- 13:32Speaker 1: And now when she stands up in the pulpit and preach.
- 13:34Speaker 1: I realized that if she hadn't gotten pregnant, she wouldn't
- 13:37Speaker 1: have been the person that she became, and that going
- 13:40Speaker 1: backwards is what drove her forward, and that God was
- 13:43Speaker 1: smarter than I was. And he knows exactly what to
- 13:46Speaker 1: take to bring you to the place that he can
- 13:48Speaker 1: get out of you what he wants out of you.
- 13:50Speaker 1: And he doesn't care whether you're embarrassed or not. And
- 13:53Speaker 1: he doesn't care whether people talk about you or not.
- 13:56Speaker 1: He doesn't care what they think about you. He only
- 13:59Speaker 1: cares that he he gets out of you what he
- 14:01Speaker 1: put inside of you. He will take you from seed
- 14:05Speaker 1: to bearing fruit. And you don't get to choose the
- 14:10Speaker 1: method he uses. You don't get to pick the tool
- 14:15Speaker 1: that he cuts you with. It may have been your
- 14:18Speaker 1: first relationship, it may have been a rape, it may
- 14:24Speaker 1: have been childhood abuse, but it shaped something in you
- 14:29Speaker 1: as horrific as it was, that made you sulfer, lying
- 14:32Speaker 1: and able to stand. And when you got through crying
- 14:35Speaker 1: about it, you woke up a tougher woman than you
- 14:38Speaker 1: were a girl. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?
- 14:44Speaker 1: The thing I love the most about him is that
- 14:49Speaker 1: God never gives up on you. He doesn't wait till
- 14:54Speaker 1: you're in the bad place and then walk out like
- 14:56Speaker 1: people do. Because people are great when you're up, but
- 15:00Speaker 1: when you're down, they'll run out. When you're weak, they'll
- 15:04Speaker 1: run out. When you make mistakes, they'll run out. And
- 15:06Speaker 1: the church is masterful, masterful at killing it's wounded. It's
- 15:14Speaker 1: masterful of that. We have no real method to really
- 15:17Speaker 1: restore or wounded, especially when they're talented, so we shoot
- 15:24Speaker 1: them for being too much like us, and there is
- 15:29Speaker 1: no place to recover. But just because man is through
- 15:34Speaker 1: with you does not mean that God is through with you.
- 15:37Speaker 1: And I don't know who I'm talking to today, but
- 15:39Speaker 1: I feel like I'm talking to somebody. Just because man
- 15:42Speaker 1: has turned his back and found out something about you
- 15:45Speaker 1: and said you're and nobody doesn't mean that God is
- 15:48Speaker 1: through with you. Because whatever they found out, God already knew.
- 15:55Speaker 1: You have never surprised God. You have never shock God.
- 15:58Speaker 1: You have never left God's scratching his head, So stop
- 16:02Speaker 1: being frustrated, because He never ever gives up on you,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and that.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Is crushing.
- 16:12Speaker 1: The uniqueness of being a human is the senses that
- 16:16Speaker 1: God has equipped us with to be able to be
- 16:19Speaker 1: in touch with the world. I know I am alive
- 16:24Speaker 1: because I see, I smell, I touch, I feel my senses.
- 16:29Speaker 1: And the very thing that He equipped me with that
- 16:31Speaker 1: is unique, that makes me able to survive even in
- 16:34Speaker 1: the jungle of life, is also the thing that gives
- 16:38Speaker 1: me discomfort when my situation changes. And we've talked about
- 16:43Speaker 1: dirty places, and we've talked about disruptive places, and we've
- 16:49Speaker 1: talked about discomfort, but we have not talked about smelly places.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I want to talk about the discomfort of dung. The
- 17:00Speaker 1: things that God uses to fertilize You smell and they
- 17:06Speaker 1: smell bad. The rubbish, the refuse. The dung is what
- 17:12Speaker 1: the vine dresser uses to make munch. It's when he
- 17:18Speaker 1: puts all around you. When he really wants you to
- 17:21Speaker 1: grow tall and strong and fruitful, he puts stink all
- 17:29Speaker 1: around you and you can't buy enough cologne to cover
- 17:33Speaker 1: it up because when it stinks, it stinks. A marriage
- 17:41Speaker 1: that stinks stinks, a bad relationship with your child stinks.
- 17:49Speaker 1: It stinks in public, it stinks with the principle, it
- 17:52Speaker 1: stinks in school, it stinks in prison, it stinks in jail.
- 17:55Speaker 1: It stinks in court, it stinks. God uses stinky. You
- 18:02Speaker 1: must realize that God uses those things so that we
- 18:06Speaker 1: will become what He has created for us to be.
- 18:11Speaker 1: That out of that, the nutrients that are necessary come
- 18:16Speaker 1: from the stink we've been in. And if you can
- 18:20Speaker 1: endure through your senses the discomfort of the aroma, eventually
- 18:27Speaker 1: God is going to get something fragrant out of the
- 18:32Speaker 1: funk you've been in. The fragrance would come from funk.
- 18:41Speaker 1: It's hard to explain, but it's true. It is true. Nonetheless,
- 18:46Speaker 1: there's some kind of way that stability would come out
- 18:49Speaker 1: of being stuck. Stuck stuck. I love the commercial for
- 18:59Speaker 1: the woman falls down on the ground. She's an old
- 19:02Speaker 1: lady and she says, help, I've fallen and I can't
- 19:08Speaker 1: get up because somebody watching me right now.
- 19:11Speaker 2: You've fallen and you can't get up.
- 19:16Speaker 1: But if you holler help, God will get some glory
- 19:22Speaker 1: out of the funk.
- 19:24Speaker 2: You're in. The pain, you're in.
- 19:28Speaker 1: The disgrace, you're in, the discomfort, you're in the crisis,
- 19:32Speaker 1: you're in the.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Turmoil you're in. You will rise again. In the words
- 19:38Speaker 2: of Maya Angelo, I.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Can't steal our eyes, look back over your life. At
- 19:44Speaker 1: how many things try to crush you and steal our rise.
- 19:50Speaker 1: We don't clap for ourselves.
- 19:54Speaker 2: We are so.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Busy complaining about where we have not gotten to that
- 19:57Speaker 1: we don't acknowledge where we have come from. And every
- 20:01Speaker 1: now and then you need to throw yourself a party
- 20:03Speaker 1: and put a hat on your head and blow a whistle,
- 20:05Speaker 1: and bake yourself a cake and put some candles on
- 20:07Speaker 1: it and light it and celebrate the fact that you
- 20:10Speaker 1: have survived the funk.
