- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meissner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone. OK, a Friday mini scroll, here
- 0:25we go. But before I get into it, Please
- 0:27remember to rate, review and subscribe.

- 0:32Spotify star ratings by the end of the year and you guys are
- 0:35pulling through. You are rating us every single
- 0:38day. So please, please, please rate
- 0:40US. OK, let's get into it.
- 0:42The first right that I have for you guys, this is giving me
- 0:46parasocial heartbreak. Kiara Ferragni is potentially
- 0:51facing up to 20 months of jail time for a charity collaboration
- 0:57that she did in 2022. So OG fashion influencer Kiara
- 1:02Fragni is facing 20 months of jail time for a Christmas cake
- 1:05collaboration that has turned fraudulent.
- 1:09She is being charged with aggravated fraud after she did a
- 1:12collaboration with Bolaco Foods to sell rebranded Pandora
- 1:16Christmas cakes in 2022. And she and the brand did a
- 1:20similar type of charity collaboration with Easter eggs
- 1:23and I think it was that same year.
- 1:25So specifically, the packaging and promotional materials
- 1:28conveyed that each purchase of the cakes would benefit a
- 1:31Children's Hospital. However, authorities found that
- 1:34Bolacco had already made a single donation around €50,000
- 1:39before the campaign, not a donation tied to each sale.
- 1:44In 2023, the Italian competition authority fined Chiara over
- 1:48€1,000,000 for misleading customers through this campaign.
- 1:52She responded with a public apology.
- 1:54She said it was a communications error and she actually donated
- 1:58€1,000,000, which was her fee for this influencer campaign.
- 2:02She donated it to the hospital and she pledged to avoid mixing
- 2:06charity and commercial promotions in the future.
- 2:09She also later paid additional settlements involving the Easter
- 2:12eggs. So just a few days ago, on
- 2:14November 25th, the Milan Prosecutor's office formally
- 2:17requested that she be sentenced up to 20 months in prison for
- 2:21aggravated fraud. So under Italian law, misleading
- 2:25advertising with fraudulent charitable promotional claims
- 2:28can qualify as aggravated fraud, which is a serious offense when
- 2:32consumers are deceived into believing a charity benefit
- 2:35exists within what they're purchasing.
- 2:37And obviously that influences their purchasing decisions.
- 2:40So yes, like I said, I have parasocial heartbreak over this.
- 2:44I think some of you guys might know cuz I've talked about it
- 2:46here and there over the years. But like Kiara is literally the
- 2:48first influencer I ever followed her.
- 2:51Peace, love, Shay and the like Alexandra something Alexandra
- 2:55something. They were like the three that I
- 2:57followed first and I just I have actually really enjoyed
- 3:01following her. Like I I know that sounds kind
- 3:04of crazy because she doesn't really do very much.
- 3:06She did more back in the day, like she talked to camera a lot
- 3:08back in the day. She had like a good Snapchat and
- 3:10stuff, but I don't know, like she has been with me and I have
- 3:13been with her. This is the definition of a
- 3:15parasocial relationship, you know, since I got Instagram when
- 3:19I was like probably 21, maybe at university and I don't know, I
- 3:25actually really like her content.
- 3:27I, I don't think that Instagram is that interesting as a
- 3:30platform, but she is one of those people that I really
- 3:33actually enjoy following. So I'm very upset about this.
- 3:36And I saw in TikTok comments that someone said that there
- 3:39were emails that exposed that Kiara was aware of the fraud
- 3:43before the collaboration started.
- 3:45So I looked into this and the information that I found was in
- 3:48Italian and I had to translate it.
- 3:50So it's not quite perfect and I obviously didn't really get the
- 3:53full story, but this is what I gathered.
- 3:55I think it's correct. So it seems like Chiara's team
- 3:59or management was possibly aware that the company was doing this
- 4:03one off donation unrelated to the sales of the cakes.
- 4:06And then there was also this e-mail from Blacco that seemed
- 4:08to explain to Chiara's team that they were trying to focus like
- 4:12the messaging around the campaign.
- 4:14They were trying to focus this on the charitable aspect effect
- 4:17of the campaign because they wanted to get maximum sales
- 4:21because sales will pay for her fee, which as we know was
- 4:24€1,000,000. So is it possible that Kiara
- 4:27just didn't know what was happening and it was like more
- 4:30between her team and the company?
- 4:32I guess yes. But I also feel like that's
- 4:34parasocial delusion. If I convince myself of that,
- 4:37I'm sad. I can't believe it.
- 4:40Can you guys imagine if Kiara Fragni goes to jail?
- 4:42Like, is this only big news to me?
- 4:44I don't know. I am like, I'm actually shook by
- 4:48this. The next way that I have for you
- 4:50guys. This actually came from one of
- 4:52you guys on Spotify. So thank you for that.
- 4:55This is a bit of like tech Twitter slash X news.
- 4:59So Rosie Wynn, who is a relatively famous tech and
- 5:02creator economy personality is facing backlash after she posted
- 5:06a very grim tweet promoting Suno AI.
- 5:10For context, Rosie was the Co founder of Fanhouse.
- 5:13She's also an influencer. So she was like an influencer
- 5:15creator. And then she Co founded
- 5:17Fanhouse, which was kind of like an only fans Patreon competitor
- 5:22and they were purchased or acquired by passes a few years
- 5:25ago. And now she is the head of
- 5:27creators at Suno AI. So before I keep going, Suno AI
- 5:32is a platform that generates AI music from text prompts.
- 5:36They just raised $250 million, which now puts the company's
- 5:40valuation at $2.45 billion. I mean, the concept of that
- 5:46platform is obviously fucked up for so many reasons.
- 5:48Like, I understand that from a corporate perspective, a lot of
- 5:53people are expected to use AI in their jobs.
- 5:55And I understand that like in some cases, you cannot be
- 5:58categorically against AI because you need to keep your job, you
- 6:02need to eat, you need to survive.
- 6:04Like fair enough. But I do not think in any world
- 6:07we should be celebrating the funding of a platform that
- 6:10erases artists completely from art.
- 6:14And I'm not saying artists don't use the platform or can't use
- 6:16the platform, but it literally erases the human element of that
- 6:22art form. Who wants to listen to music
- 6:25that isn't written, created, designed by humans?
- 6:28Like human emotion and human experience is literally the
- 6:31heartbeat of music. That's like the whole point.
- 6:35Art, music, all of that. OK, so a couple days ago Rosie
- 6:40posted this on XI Grew up singing.
- 6:43I sang everywhere I went. I wrote songs in my diary.
- 6:46I told teachers that I wanted to be a singer and songwriter when
- 6:49I grew up. But wanting to be a musician in
- 6:522006 required resources that a low income family didn't have.
- 6:57My parents couldn't afford to get me any instruments.
- 6:59They couldn't pay for my music lessons.
- 7:01They couldn't get me into studios.
- 7:03A dream I had became just a memory.
- 7:06Until now. I am beyond proud and honored to
- 7:09get to work at a company that is enabling music creation for
- 7:12everyone. For the 13 year old kid in their
- 7:15bedroom who dreams of being a musician, you can be 1.
- 7:18For all the professional artists, you can do more of what
- 7:21you love. I really wish Suno existed 20
- 7:24years ago when I was a kid in elementary school showing
- 7:27strangers songs I wrote with no way to produce them.
- 7:30But I'm really really happy that it exists today for all the
- 7:33other kids who might need it. OK so this had people mad for
- 7:36obvious reasons. First of all, it's so deeply
- 7:39insidious to position this platform as something that is
- 7:42helping children realize their dreams.
- 7:45Because fun fact, SUNO AI only paid musical artists a total of
- 7:50$2000 to train its model. I can't.
- 7:54OK, so this is from Gizmodo quote.
- 7:57According to Billboard, which obtained investor presentation
- 7:59materials from Suno, its users were generating about 7,000,000
- 8:03songs per day over the course of two weeks.
- 8:06Created as many songs as are currently available on Spotify.
- 8:10Like, why do we want that? That is literally the antithesis
- 8:16of art and music. I just can't get over this.
- 8:19I know I already said that, but like, it's crazy.
- 8:20Its users, mostly young men, spend more than 20 minutes per
- 8:24day producing their own music, which is something that young
- 8:27when could only dream of. Now anyone can become a music
- 8:31artist, a thing that SUNO apparently doesn't value at all
- 8:34considering the company has only paid $2000 in total on music
- 8:39used to train its models. So Rosie's post was met with a
- 8:43lot of backlash and this escalated after some who had
- 8:47been following her over the years brought up the reason why
- 8:50she actually stepped down from Fanhouse again.
- 8:53Fanhouse was the creator platform that she Co founded.
- 8:56So this is from Business Insider.
- 8:58This is an interview that they did with Rosie after she left
- 9:01Fan House quote. She recalled clashes with VCs on
- 9:04issues like Fan House's 10% take rate, which were the fees the
- 9:08business collected from transactions on its platform.
- 9:11Investors wanted to increase the rate to boost the company's
- 9:14profits. VCs also wanted Fan House to
- 9:18experiment with technology like Web 3 and artificial
- 9:22intelligence when pushed back against these ideas because she
- 9:27didn't think they served the best interests of creators on
- 9:30the platform. Reminder, she is currently the
- 9:33head of creators at Suno AI. And then during this time when
- 9:38she left, she told TechCrunch this.
- 9:40It's not just about the money, it's about what platform is
- 9:43going to take care of me. Not every platform cares about
- 9:46its creators, and creators want to feel safe and cared for over
- 9:49anything else. That is so insanely ironic, you
- 9:54guys. Like, she is now the head of
- 9:56creators at an AI company that could clearly care less about
- 10:01taking care of the musicians, the artists and the creators
- 10:05that they are directly profiting from, stealing their jobs,
- 10:10taking all of their work. Like, I just can't.
- 10:12At the time of recording, she hasn't taken down the tweet.
- 10:14I don't think she's going to. And yeah, her mentions and her
- 10:19quote tweets seem to be a disaster.
- 10:21OK, the next word that I have for you guys, this is a story
- 10:25that I would have covered regardless.
- 10:26However, I feel like it's even more important for me to cover
- 10:29this since I did an entire episode yesterday about the
- 10:32TikTok Awards and our experience doing red carpet interviews
- 10:36there and how it was relatively positive.
- 10:39However, it was absolutely not positive for several creators,
- 10:44especially creators of color. So there are several creators of
- 10:48color who are speaking out right now on TikTok about the TikTok
- 10:51Awards and how they were treated.
- 10:53Several videos those have come out over the past basically like
- 10:5612 to 24 hours by various black Australian creators talking
- 11:01about how they were mistreated and some even faced racism at
- 11:05the event by event staff. The main video that sparked this
- 11:08discussion was by a creator named Niel who has over 400,000
- 11:12followers. Mind you, like a huge creator,
- 11:15especially in Australia, we are a very small country here.
- 11:19She shared her experience trying to get photos at the media wall
- 11:22and in her video she actually provided footage in which you
- 11:26can hear and see how the photography event staff spoke to
- 11:30her and her group of friends that she was with.
- 11:32This is. This is the media they
- 11:34definitely output. That's the information.
- 11:38But this has nothing to do with you.
- 11:39We didn't need your photo. We don't like they don't put up.
- 11:43What are they going to do with your photo?
- 11:44That's crazy. I'm saying sorry, sorry.
- 11:49I will no longer be attending the TikTok awards because I'm
- 11:53tired of being treated like this.
- 11:56If you're inviting creators to be seat fillers, fill up your
- 12:00audience so that when the TV network plays your vet that they
- 12:03see that there's so many people there.
- 12:05Then let the creators know that they're being invited as
- 12:08audience members and not as content creators.
- 12:10Don't go treating people like shit and then prioritizing
- 12:15whoever you choose. Other creators, every year that
- 12:19I've been to the awards, they always have two separate
- 12:22carpets. They have a media wall which you
- 12:24can kind of just get in fast, get your photo and then they
- 12:27have another one where you can get interviews.
- 12:30Then we usually have people interviewing content creators.
- 12:33I've spoken to other creators about how they get to that
- 12:37interview stage because me personally, I've always just
- 12:40stayed in the background and I've never felt that I could go
- 12:45to the media walls because to be honest, in Australia, like black
- 12:49content creators, they don't know what's like that.
- 12:52This year I thought I've been in the background the last three
- 12:55years I've attended. I might as well just try to do
- 12:58an interview. I might as well just try to be
- 13:00more involved with the press side of things, you know,
- 13:03because again, one of the biggest things that we struggle
- 13:05with as black creators is being seen in Australian media.
- 13:09How this whole thing happens is we heard that there's a media
- 13:12war upstairs. We went upstairs again, there's
- 13:14no security. That's like stopping you.
- 13:17It's not bad or for anything. We line up, get to the front,
- 13:21and one of the, I guess staff members was like, are you a
- 13:25nominee or a presenter? And I was like, no, we're just
- 13:29content creator. And then she goes, sorry,
- 13:31they're only wanting to interview nominees and
- 13:34presenters. I was just kind of like, because
- 13:37I saw someone that I'm mutuals with, they're doing an
- 13:40interview. They weren't a nominee, they
- 13:43weren't a presenter. They were like me, a content
- 13:47creator that was invited to attend.
- 13:50So it's a bit like, oh, but anyways, the lady goes, but if
- 13:53you guys want to take photos, you can just go over there.
- 13:55She points at the wall where there's the photographers and
- 13:59she's like, I can guide you guys there, but if you just want your
- 14:01photo taken, you can go there. So we went to line up in that
- 14:05section because we're like, oh, OK, if the press don't want to
- 14:08do interviews with creators this year, let's go take a photo.
- 14:12The photographer that was there, he was kind of like you're not
- 14:15supposed to enter from this way, like the way the way we were and
- 14:19we're just, we just told him on we were told to come here.
- 14:22I just he was a bit confused, but he just continued taking
- 14:25photos anyways. And then everyone else from the
- 14:28media like that, we're doing interviews.
- 14:30They were coming through. So there's a photographer was
- 14:32taking their photos. So we're just standing there
- 14:34waiting. This man approach was so much
- 14:38aggression. The thing is, it wasn't only us
- 14:41in the line. There was other people behind us
- 14:44and he came directly to us that he was speaking directly to us
- 14:50when he said that there's a medium.
- 14:51If you just get your photo taken to yourself, go downstairs, give
- 14:53it. This is this is quite the
- 14:57medium. No, that's not Absolutely.
- 14:58That's the information. This has nothing to do with you.
- 15:03We don't need your photo. They don't put up.
- 15:04What are they going to do with your photo?
- 15:07It's not going to go where that's crazy.
- 15:08I'm saying they're they're working on the price.
- 15:10So sorry, yeah, but it's not our fault that we're getting.
- 15:14The wrong information. You know what's that happened?
- 15:16These photographers all work for this.
- 15:18I don't. I work for TikTok, but they all
- 15:19work for the dating load up and they're going to literally just
- 15:21RIP, RIP everyone's heads off. They'll just go get out of our
- 15:23way. They're like they're nasty
- 15:25pressed. On the.
- 15:26Goose. So I mean, this is atrocious.
- 15:29No one should ever be spoken to like this.
- 15:31It's actually crazy. And I'm so glad she got that on
- 15:35video. Tiktok needs to see that.
- 15:37Anyone who was helping manage the event, who was running the
- 15:40event, who was working the event, we needed to see that.
- 15:44So in this specific case, when that guy says that he works for
- 15:49Tiktok as someone who was on the red carpet, I was actually
- 15:52working that exact red carpet on the other side.
- 15:55He was standing with the photographers.
- 15:57And I do believe that he was a photographer.
- 16:00So when he says that he worked for TikTok, like I don't think
- 16:02he works for TikTok, the company.
- 16:04I think he was hired by TikTok as an official event
- 16:07photographer. He is trying to say, I believe,
- 16:09like this is my assumption. I believe he is trying to say I
- 16:13don't work for like the Daily Telegraph or like some of the
- 16:15media outlets where they're kind of like the photographers for
- 16:18those outlets where then those photos will get run in those
- 16:21outlets. He's saying, like, I am like a
- 16:24TikTok photographer. I think that's what he was
- 16:26implying there. In general, it really doesn't
- 16:28matter if he's trying to say that this media wall is for
- 16:32nominees because, well, the way that you presented that
- 16:34information felt, I mean, first of all, disgusting, mean
- 16:39spirited and targeted. It was so unacceptable.
- 16:42It went so beyond just trying to explain this is where the
- 16:45nominees take their photos. Like if that's what the case
- 16:48was, if that's what he was trying to say, you said it in
- 16:51such an unacceptable way. So this has kicked off a full on
- 16:55discussion online about how creators of color are treated in
- 16:58Australia in general, at media events, in the influencer
- 17:02industry at large. And I mean, as someone who is in
- 17:05those industries, there is a massive representation problem.
- 17:09And this is a conversation that we need to continually bring up
- 17:13and continually have. And those of us who work in the
- 17:16industry, like, need to be held accountable as well.
- 17:19So that's also why I'm really glad she got this footage.
- 17:22I'm just so disappointed. I'm so exhausted for these
- 17:26creators. Like, I can't even imagine and
- 17:29I'm kind of embarrassed that we were on that red carpet and, you
- 17:33know, like we were working the red carpet.
- 17:35Like I honestly had no idea how creators, not just her, but like
- 17:39creators in general felt about the experience because that was
- 17:42not part of like what we were doing because we weren't out
- 17:45there with them. We were, you know, like working
- 17:47on the red carpet and then we went home, as I explained
- 17:50yesterday. So but yeah, like it's, it's
- 17:52horrible. I'm kind of embarrassed that I
- 17:54talked about how I we had a relatively positive experience
- 17:58yesterday. Obviously, obviously multiple
- 17:59things can be true at once, like we were there working in a whole
- 18:03different capacity. But yeah, it's really
- 18:06disappointing and I do hope that they address it.
- 18:09I'm not sure. I'll keep you guys posted.
- 18:11Anyways, guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 18:14Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
