- 0:09Speaker 1: Welcome into a mandatory mini camp edition of Inside the Charge.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I'm Matti Glabb and I'm so excited to be joined
- 0:14Speaker 1: by outside linebacker Greg Russo. Does it sound weird saying
- 0:18Speaker 1: outside linebacker next to your name?
- 0:19Speaker 2: Now, No, it's different, but I'm getting used to it though.
- 0:22Speaker 3: You got outside linebacker and you got fifteen.
- 0:24Speaker 1: A lot of differences heading into year six for you,
- 0:29Speaker 1: you had the Greg Russo charity softball game on June seventh,
- 0:33Speaker 1: home run Derby. Then the offense and defense played against
- 0:36Speaker 1: each other. Yes, why did you want to do a
- 0:38Speaker 1: charity event like this?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Crew?
- 0:40Speaker 4: Well, really, Michah Hyde passed it down to me. He
- 0:45Speaker 4: was doing it with Imagine the Youths Foundation, and just
- 0:48Speaker 4: kind of wanted to keep it going because it's been
- 0:49Speaker 4: such a positive thing in the community and to be
- 0:51Speaker 4: able to go out there and raise funds and kind
- 0:53Speaker 4: of spread it back out throughout the team. It's like,
- 0:56Speaker 4: especially when you're starting up a foundation, if you get
- 0:59Speaker 4: let's say, like we did ten thousand for each person
- 1:01Speaker 4: this time, it's like that's a lot of money just
- 1:02Speaker 4: to start your foundation and kind of get your feet
- 1:05Speaker 4: under you and get the ball rolling in to throw
- 1:06Speaker 4: some events and to be able to help out the community.
- 1:08Speaker 4: So I feel like it helps out a lot of
- 1:09Speaker 4: the younger guys who were up and coming. Try to
- 1:11Speaker 4: start your foundation, and my kid did the same for
- 1:13Speaker 4: me a couple of years ago, like two three years ago,
- 1:15Speaker 4: and ever since then, I've been like, man, it's a
- 1:18Speaker 4: sick game. It's a lot of fun for us, and
- 1:21Speaker 4: it's also fun for the community. To be able to
- 1:22Speaker 4: get out in front of the fans for like kind
- 1:25Speaker 4: of like the first time since the season for so, yeah, I.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Think that's so cool and something a lot of fans
- 1:30Speaker 1: may not have known unless you were there is you
- 1:32Speaker 1: see all these check presentations and you are helping the
- 1:36Speaker 1: money that was raised from this tournament is also going
- 1:39Speaker 1: to player foundations. So, like you said, it was instrumental
- 1:42Speaker 1: for you and your foundation, and you get to kind
- 1:45Speaker 1: of pass that torch to younger players, which is so cool.
- 1:47Speaker 1: As you saw your players or saw your teammates show
- 1:52Speaker 1: up for you drive two hours round trip, you see
- 1:55Speaker 1: the stadium in Rochester packed with fans as the event
- 1:59Speaker 1: was wrapping up.
- 2:00Speaker 3: What struck you about the day?
- 2:02Speaker 4: Yeah, like you said earlier, it's my teammates. I just
- 2:04Speaker 4: appreciate him coming out there because I know it's far.
- 2:07Speaker 4: It's not it's not super close. It's it's like you said,
- 2:09Speaker 4: more than a two hour round trip. So that had
- 2:11Speaker 4: to come out there and to and support and show love.
- 2:14Speaker 4: I mean it's great because we didn't do the game.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Nobody shows up. So I was glad to see him
- 2:18Speaker 4: out there and we had we had a ball, We
- 2:19Speaker 4: had a really good time. Like don Kan Kid went crazy.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Uh Phil had that crazy wrong. He was holding the
- 2:26Speaker 4: bat wrong, but he hit a home run. So I
- 2:28Speaker 4: mean it was a lot of fun. Uh yeah, this
- 2:30Speaker 4: is a vibe and I'm glad I did it. Hopefully
- 2:32Speaker 4: we'll run it back soon next year.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Phil was so funny gripping that back the wrong way
- 2:36Speaker 1: and then hitting home run and dancing his winning around
- 2:40Speaker 1: the bases.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Who surprised you the most at that game?
- 2:43Speaker 4: I would say Phil, honestly, because when you see the
- 2:46Speaker 4: way holding it like he's just you think he's out
- 2:47Speaker 4: there that's playing around. So to get out there and
- 2:49Speaker 4: actually hit a home run him, But also Don kincaid
- 2:52Speaker 4: because I didn't know he was that elite yet hitting hitting.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Some was like I don't even know if I want
- 2:58Speaker 1: to do exactly sure, and then he steps up to
- 3:01Speaker 1: the plate and it's like him d C and and
- 3:04Speaker 1: Keon like home run after home run.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah he can.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Surprised me too because I knew DC was good because
- 3:08Speaker 4: I think he won it last year or the year
- 3:10Speaker 4: before or whatever. And then Keon he was he was
- 3:13Speaker 4: pretty solid too. Yeah, so I was like, I was impressed.
- 3:16Speaker 1: It's crazy. You guys are just such athletes. You pick
- 3:18Speaker 1: up any other sport and it's like bam, there they go.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Yeah, exact.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Micah Hyde was in attendance too. We've known the Micah
- 3:27Speaker 1: Hide charity softball game. This year it was your charity
- 3:29Speaker 1: softball game. How has Mike had been such a great
- 3:32Speaker 1: leader for you to show the way of like this
- 3:34Speaker 1: is how you do things as an NFL veteran.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean he's been great just coming in here,
- 3:39Speaker 4: like watching him from a distance scene away, like when
- 3:41Speaker 4: he was playing, how he would take care of his body,
- 3:43Speaker 4: to what he approached a game, the level of focus
- 3:45Speaker 4: and all that. The elite preparation just when it comes
- 3:48Speaker 4: to football, I mean at an elite level, and also
- 3:50Speaker 4: off the field, like throwing things like that and having
- 3:52Speaker 4: including your team getting everybody involved getting out into community
- 3:55Speaker 4: and being able to help you out and also help
- 3:56Speaker 4: out another person's foundation, multiple other people's foundations. I mean,
- 4:01Speaker 4: it's like there's no perfect person. But I mean, Mike's
- 4:03Speaker 4: doing a great job.
- 4:04Speaker 2: You know.
- 4:04Speaker 4: I'm saying just as a person, whether it's football or
- 4:06Speaker 4: off the field, just trying to help out stuff.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Thinking about what's going on on the field.
- 4:10Speaker 1: During mandatory mini camp, you are switching to a new
- 4:13Speaker 1: defense three four, going from defensive end to outside linebacker.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Why will Greg Russo be a wrecking ball in this
- 4:20Speaker 1: new defense?
- 4:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like I feel like I'll be a
- 4:23Speaker 4: wrecking ball because it's aggressive, you know, like just the
- 4:26Speaker 4: hometown orientation of the vibe. It's like we're really playing
- 4:29Speaker 4: offense on defense, Like you're really going at the offense,
- 4:33Speaker 4: and like our calls are kind of made kind of
- 4:37Speaker 4: around that, and our personnel is aggressive too, Like we
- 4:39Speaker 4: got dudes you can who can get off the ball
- 4:41Speaker 4: and create having like Ed and TJ and guys in inside,
- 4:44Speaker 4: also guys on the outside like Chubb Javaon. I mean, hoy,
- 4:48Speaker 4: I can go down the whole entire list. I mean,
- 4:50Speaker 4: I feel like we're I feel like it's going to
- 4:51Speaker 4: be really funny. You're first, and obviously we've still got
- 4:53Speaker 4: a lot of work to put in, still got to
- 4:55Speaker 4: have everybody has got to have a productive summer and
- 4:57Speaker 4: keep on putting it into work and come back for
- 5:00Speaker 4: handcan radio and keep on also building our bond.
- 5:02Speaker 2: So yeah, I'm super excited.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Going from a four to three to a three four.
- 5:05Speaker 1: You think, okay, less defensive linemen, more linebackers, you say,
- 5:10Speaker 1: more aggressive.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Why is it more aggressive.
- 5:13Speaker 4: I'd say because you have in a three four, out
- 5:16Speaker 4: of those four linebackers, you have two of them walked
- 5:19Speaker 4: up on the ball. So like let's say, like if
- 5:22Speaker 4: me and tubor out or whatever, and then you got
- 5:23Speaker 4: three D linemen like D tackles inside, you've got more.
- 5:27Speaker 4: You got more bigger bodies on the field. You have
- 5:29Speaker 4: more people up front opposed like a four to three,
- 5:31Speaker 4: you got four up here, three back here, you got
- 5:34Speaker 4: four on the ball. But instead in three four, it's
- 5:37Speaker 4: almost like you can call it sometimes a five to
- 5:38Speaker 4: two for because you got five people in the ball.
- 5:40Speaker 4: So it's just you're pushing, you're kind of you kind
- 5:42Speaker 4: of got somebody in every gap, and it creates one
- 5:44Speaker 4: on one, it creates opportunities where we could isolate, guard, center, tackle,
- 5:48Speaker 4: whoever it is, and kind of just have a play
- 5:51Speaker 4: in a winner on one on one. So I feel
- 5:52Speaker 4: like that's what that's what makes that defense work. But
- 5:54Speaker 4: at the end of the day, it's like you could
- 5:56Speaker 4: see good things out of a three four four to three,
- 5:59Speaker 4: and you can see bad things too. Like there's there's
- 6:01Speaker 4: pros and cons and everything. So it's all about the
- 6:02Speaker 4: people and how we go out there and do it
- 6:04Speaker 4: and execute when the time comes during the season.
- 6:06Speaker 1: As you study this new defense, learn the new calls,
- 6:09Speaker 1: learn how it's going to operate. What are you doing
- 6:12Speaker 1: outside of practices to make sure you're gonna know this
- 6:15Speaker 1: like the back of your hand.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Yeah, flash cards, just flipping flash cards whenever I get
- 6:20Speaker 4: the chance around my home and I had some free
- 6:23Speaker 4: time just to really get it down.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Pass somewhere.
- 6:25Speaker 4: If I hear a call, I know, it's kind of
- 6:26Speaker 4: like muscle memory, like and I just know automatically I'm
- 6:30Speaker 4: doing this or I'm doing this, and I'm doing this.
- 6:31Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 6:32Speaker 4: I don't have to sit there and think about it,
- 6:33Speaker 4: because it takes time to adjust to a new defense,
- 6:36Speaker 4: especially have to be in another one for so long,
- 6:38Speaker 4: So flash cards for sure.
- 6:40Speaker 1: As you transition and learn about what a three four
- 6:44Speaker 1: defense entails, some of the fun things you can do
- 6:46Speaker 1: with it, and reflect on being in a four to
- 6:48Speaker 1: three defense. What have you learned about the game of
- 6:51Speaker 1: football in this transition?
- 6:53Speaker 4: I feel like offenses attack different teams who run different
- 6:58Speaker 4: defenses like four, three through four and different ways. So
- 7:00Speaker 4: because I've been watching a lot of Denver film and
- 7:03Speaker 4: kind of seeing how offenses are attacking them or how
- 7:05Speaker 4: they attacked them last year because they were three four,
- 7:07Speaker 4: or even other teams that run three four, It's just
- 7:09Speaker 4: like it's very different than how a team that runs
- 7:11Speaker 4: a four to three we'll get attacked. So just being
- 7:13Speaker 4: able to see that in adjusted that it's going to
- 7:15Speaker 4: be it's gonna be different this year. But I think
- 7:17Speaker 4: I think everybody's up for the challenge and we're excited
- 7:20Speaker 4: for and the change is good.
- 7:22Speaker 1: You had seven sacks last season? What do you want
- 7:24Speaker 1: to show the world in year six?
- 7:27Speaker 4: Just want to keep on building, keep on stacking them,
- 7:28Speaker 4: trying to get double digit sacks, and trying to just
- 7:31Speaker 4: be the best teammate I could be, trying to be
- 7:32Speaker 4: a leader, captain and kind of lead the young guys
- 7:34Speaker 4: and help them out, because I know how pivotal and
- 7:37Speaker 4: important it is to have an older vet in the
- 7:40Speaker 4: room who could help you out, put you on the
- 7:41Speaker 4: game for certain things, whether it's football or off the field,
- 7:43Speaker 4: because I know I had that, had that in Vaughan
- 7:46Speaker 4: when I was younger. It helped me out a lot
- 7:48Speaker 4: in my growth as a player.
- 7:49Speaker 1: So, yeah, double digit sacks, You've been close, Like three
- 7:53Speaker 1: out of the last four seasons you've had at least seven sacks.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Two of those seasons you had eight sacks, So you've
- 7:58Speaker 1: been sniffing that number ten.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Is there anything that you feel like is going to
- 8:03Speaker 1: push you over the edge to get there?
- 8:06Speaker 4: I feel like just work ethic, you know what I'm saying.
- 8:07Speaker 4: I feel like I work harder, harder every year. I'm
- 8:10Speaker 4: excited for the summer. It's excited to get home, grind,
- 8:13Speaker 4: take care of my body, get as healthy as possible,
- 8:16Speaker 4: as big and strong as possible, and be ready to
- 8:18Speaker 4: go for training camp. And I have a good feeling
- 8:20Speaker 4: about his year.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Defensive coordinator Jim Leonard, he's new this season and teaching
- 8:24Speaker 1: you the three four defense. What's the most unique thing
- 8:28Speaker 1: about his coaching style.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Man, he's really straight up. I'd tell you that about
- 8:32Speaker 4: him and Bobby April.
- 8:34Speaker 2: The very straight up.
- 8:35Speaker 4: There's no like funny business or just directing to the point.
- 8:38Speaker 4: They know the taste. Jim played in the league for
- 8:41Speaker 4: like ten years or or maybe even more. And yeah,
- 8:44Speaker 4: the scene, the way they approach everything. Like I said,
- 8:46Speaker 4: there's no secrets. If there if there's something that practice
- 8:49Speaker 4: we're doing different. He's not trying to trick us or whatever.
- 8:51Speaker 4: It's like, we're doing this. We got to get better
- 8:53Speaker 4: at this. We did a good job with this, we
- 8:54Speaker 4: didn't do good with this. Is very straight up, professional,
- 8:57Speaker 4: straightforward and when we got to go out there and execute.
- 8:59Speaker 4: When when he's making those calls.
- 9:01Speaker 1: How is Joe Brady making sure he's given the defense
- 9:03Speaker 1: love now that he's not just on the offensive side
- 9:06Speaker 1: of the football.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Yeah, after every practice he comes and DAPs up everybody
- 9:10Speaker 4: gives us all a handshake on the defensive side.
- 9:12Speaker 2: So that's different.
- 9:12Speaker 4: But it's cool to see because you know he's it
- 9:16Speaker 4: takes the offense and a defense that he's not even
- 9:17Speaker 4: though he was OC last year. He's not like a
- 9:20Speaker 4: partial to the offense or on their side or whatever.
- 9:23Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 9:24Speaker 4: He makes it tough on all of us, so I mean,
- 9:26Speaker 4: we're all pushing to be better.
- 9:27Speaker 1: I had a moment watching practice yesterday where somebody got
- 9:30Speaker 1: a pick on defense, one of the defensive backs, and
- 9:33Speaker 1: I was next to Joe and I saw him like
- 9:35Speaker 1: watch it happen, and He's like, I had a baby,
- 9:37Speaker 1: let's go, and like went out and like celebrated with
- 9:40Speaker 1: the defense, And for me, it was like, oh wow,
- 9:41Speaker 1: he really is over both units.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Now, Like of course, you know, if the deceit in
- 9:45Speaker 3: action was.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Fair exactly, it's dope. It's different, but it's really cool though.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Okay, off the field, this is the off season. It's
- 9:51Speaker 1: it's time to enjoy your life a little bit more
- 9:54Speaker 1: than you do in season because you were all about ball.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Lonnie Visions is a clothing that you're starting. Why dabble
- 10:02Speaker 1: in the fashion world?
- 10:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like this when it comes to like
- 10:06Speaker 4: being in the league and being into fashion and kind
- 10:08Speaker 4: of like being a consumer buying a lot of stuff,
- 10:10Speaker 4: It's like it's like, why not just make your own brand.
- 10:13Speaker 4: So me and my my boy Nest the Jay severa
- 10:15Speaker 4: my roommate and one of my really good friends from college.
- 10:17Speaker 2: We started it and we got like an.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Instagram page and whatnot, and we're getting about to get
- 10:22Speaker 4: some shirts, some shirts and some some cargoes made pretty soon.
- 10:26Speaker 4: So yeah, it's gonna be like streetwear, just like normal,
- 10:29Speaker 4: normal clothing, but it's gonna be pretty dope.
- 10:31Speaker 3: How cool was.
- 10:32Speaker 1: The process figuring out we wanted to be street wear?
- 10:35Speaker 1: But what do we want the design and vibe to look?
- 10:38Speaker 2: Like?
- 10:39Speaker 4: Yeah, uh, it's gonna be it's gonna be modern, it's
- 10:41Speaker 4: gonna be hip. We haven't, like, we have a whole
- 10:46Speaker 4: bunch of ideas, but we haven't ironed out and exactly
- 10:47Speaker 4: what we want to do with our first job. But
- 10:50Speaker 4: it should be coming sometime maybe this fall or late
- 10:52Speaker 4: in the summer.
- 10:53Speaker 2: So yeah, we're excited about it.
- 10:54Speaker 1: When did you really start to get into fashion?
- 10:56Speaker 2: I say a couple of years ago, like my second
- 10:58Speaker 2: year in the league.
- 10:59Speaker 4: I was like messing with different different brands, and then
- 11:02Speaker 4: like I said, I'll spend the money on stuff, but
- 11:04Speaker 4: it's like you can make your own you can make
- 11:06Speaker 4: your own clothes. And then obviously you got people in
- 11:09Speaker 4: here that way and now and now mess with it
- 11:11Speaker 4: the same way, Like if somebody has a business in here.
- 11:13Speaker 4: I'm all in with it because I know everybody in here.
- 11:15Speaker 1: So yeah, that's so cool. Have you traveled at all
- 11:19Speaker 1: this off season? Done anything fun? Gone anywhere? Are you
- 11:22Speaker 1: doing that once you guys break for mandatory mini camp?
- 11:24Speaker 2: Uh? Yeah, I'm actually gonna go.
- 11:25Speaker 4: I'm gonna go to LA and feel some materials for
- 11:29Speaker 4: clothing brand, just feel different clothes and whatnot.
- 11:32Speaker 2: And other than that, probably go to disney World.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Okay, you are you a fan of disney World or
- 11:36Speaker 3: is it?
- 11:36Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I'm a favorite, but it's for my daughter,
- 11:39Speaker 4: so so yeah, she's like about to be two pretty soon,
- 11:42Speaker 4: so I'm gonna take her disney World.
- 11:44Speaker 2: She loves Mickey Mouse.
- 11:45Speaker 3: So that's amazing.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Greg Russo a Disney World with his daughter loving up
- 11:49Speaker 1: Mickey Mouse and everything that Disney World has to entail.
- 11:52Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Exactly when it comes to going to LA and testing
- 11:57Speaker 1: out some materials is that you go to a warehouse
- 12:00Speaker 1: and you get to see all these samples and then
- 12:02Speaker 1: figure out, okay, this is what we want exactly.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Like different manufacturer manufacturing places or whatever that make clothes
- 12:09Speaker 4: and pants, jeans, whatever it is, and they have a
- 12:12Speaker 4: whole bunch of materials in there, so just to be
- 12:13Speaker 4: able to go there and actually like touch it and
- 12:15Speaker 4: not just see it on the phone or see a
- 12:17Speaker 4: picture of it, to go in there and feel it
- 12:18Speaker 4: and be like, all right, I like this, I don't
- 12:20Speaker 4: like that. That could be a little soft, that could
- 12:21Speaker 4: be a little rougher or whatever it is. So yeah,
- 12:24Speaker 4: just being able to be hands on with it so
- 12:26Speaker 4: that whenever we do make them the shirts and all
- 12:28Speaker 4: that stuff here shortly it's like we know what we're
- 12:31Speaker 4: getting and we actually went and felt it. It's like
- 12:33Speaker 4: it's like buying a car that you haven't test drove.
- 12:36Speaker 4: You might want to test driving and kind of see
- 12:38Speaker 4: how does it turn, how do you put it in
- 12:39Speaker 4: park or go to driver neutral, Like you kind of
- 12:41Speaker 4: want to be hands on with this.
- 12:42Speaker 2: So same thing.
- 12:44Speaker 1: We know you're into anime, anything new, you're watching?
- 12:49Speaker 4: Nothing new, actually, Ben lind Saga is new that I'm watching.
- 12:53Speaker 4: And then last year Joey Bosta put me on chainsaw Man.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Absolutely fire. We actually went to the movies and saw
- 12:59Speaker 4: it like they had a movie. Well, they had like
- 13:01Speaker 4: ten episodes in like the first part of season two
- 13:03Speaker 4: is in movie format. It's probably like three or four
- 13:05Speaker 4: episodes in like the movie format. But that was really cool.
- 13:09Speaker 4: And then I'm looking for like a new I'm watching
- 13:12Speaker 4: Feland soccer, but I'm looking for like a new big anime.
- 13:14Speaker 2: To watch, like a longer one for the season. But
- 13:17Speaker 2: we'll see.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Put it in the comments, so let you know any
- 13:20Speaker 1: ideas that you guys have. Another big new thing happening
- 13:25Speaker 1: this season is you guys are transitioning to new high
- 13:28Speaker 1: Mark Stadium. As you've watched high Mark Stadium get built
- 13:33Speaker 1: and constructed over the last few years, we're now watching
- 13:35Speaker 1: former high Mark Stadium come down. How do you reflect
