- 0:00Um, I love this place. Seriously, I love
- 0:02this place. It, you know, gave me my
- 0:04first shot at coaching in the at the P4
- 0:07level. Um, and so, you know, I feel like
- 0:10there's unfinished business. Um, got a
- 0:13lot of guys that are hungry and and
- 0:15things like that. And and I do believe
- 0:16in what we're building. Uh, I believe in
- 0:19um, Coach Golish and um, and some of the
- 0:22things that he's done so far, I think,
- 0:24is going to be big time for us uh,
- 0:26developing leaders and holding everybody
- 0:28accountable. So, I'm excited about it.
- 0:31>> How excited were you when the news came
- 0:32out about Dallas being able to play
- 0:34again?
- 0:34>> That's big, man. That was big because
- 0:38we're we're a talented group. Um, very
- 0:41unproven, right? A lot of young guys
- 0:44that that are going to be really, really
- 0:46good. Um, and so, which is different
- 0:48than what we were, you know, shoot
- 0:50really the past two seasons, we've had
- 0:52some older guys, um, now being younger.
- 0:55So, having Dallas come back gives you
- 0:56that veteran presence. um a guy who has
- 0:58done it in the SEC and played, you know,
- 1:01at a at a a pretty high level um you
- 1:03know, last year and so he knows our
- 1:06system. He knows our defense and so um
- 1:08no, super excited about having him back
- 1:10and it's going to be a big one for him.
- 1:12>> Cody Sigler, you guys go and get him. I
- 1:14mean, he he busted his tail at West
- 1:15Alabama and had some really great
- 1:17numbers at Arkansas State this past
- 1:18year. What do you really like about him?
- 1:19>> He a dog, man. He's a dog. uh you know
- 1:22like will not be broken um competition
- 1:26stuff like he there's no excuse like
- 1:29he's taking double reps um you know
- 1:32taking someone else's reps and things
- 1:34like that not making any excuse about it
- 1:35still winning so he's a dog he's going
- 1:37to bring competitiveness to our room um
- 1:40that I think will be big and and what is
- 1:42needed um but but yeah no Cody is going
- 1:45to be a big part of what we uh what we
- 1:47accomplish this year
- 1:49>> trail you have guys like and and Jordan
- 1:52Darion just coming back for year two.
- 1:55>> Yeah.
- 1:55>> In today's college football, how big is
- 1:57that, you know, for you as a coach to
- 1:58get an opportunity to coach some guys
- 2:00for a second year?
- 2:02>> Yeah, just continue like like being able
- 2:05to coach the same things you've been
- 2:08coaching and not only doing that, but
- 2:09like watching them get better. Uh we we
- 2:12just did some drills uh the other day
- 2:14and it's so funny because they were
- 2:16like, "Coach, is this what we looked
- 2:17like last year?" I'm like, "Yeah." So,
- 2:20uh, but no, I mean th those guys, I mean
- 2:22sticking sticking it out and, um, being
- 2:25a part of something that's bigger than
- 2:26themselves. Um, and then like I said,
- 2:28like I mean they're all got to remember
- 2:31they're all young. Like they were
- 2:32freshman last year. Uh, and so watching
- 2:34them also take the leadership role has
- 2:37been something that's been pretty cool,
- 2:38right? So, um, a blessing to have those
- 2:41guys and to come back and excited to
- 2:43build off of, you know, what what's been
- 2:45done. Just following up on that, what is
- 2:48kind of your expectation for them on the
- 2:49field? I know they played a lot as as
- 2:51true freshman.
- 2:51>> Yeah.
- 2:52>> Well, well, let's continue to get
- 2:54better, right? Like continue to take the
- 2:55necessary steps to um improve your game
- 2:58and and I think they will. They they'll
- 2:59answer the challenge. Like they'll
- 3:01answer the bell uh because of how hard
- 3:02they work and and um you know, the love
- 3:05that they got for each other ultimately.
- 3:07So um you know that that's the
- 3:09expectation. and I expect for them to
- 3:10continue to get better um and continue
- 3:13to, you know, improve and and make a
- 3:16bigger difference for for our defense
- 3:17this year.
- 3:18>> We've heard a lot about just kind of the
- 3:20connections and the familiarity amongst
- 3:22this coaching staff, but I know you and
- 3:23AG had a prior relationship. I know
- 3:25you've talked about it a little bit, but
- 3:26just how far back does does that go? You
- 3:28>> Man, it goes It goes He was my area
- 3:32recruiter um when I was uh coming out of
- 3:34high school and uh shoot back in 2012.
- 3:39Um, and so he ended up going to
- 3:41University of Illinois with uh um Coach
- 3:44Banks. He was my DC. Um, and so yeah,
- 3:47no, I mean just the the that part like
- 3:50having people that you know and and uh
- 3:53family around like I mean that's
- 3:54essentially what what it feels like.
- 3:56Like I was damn near tears when I knew
- 3:58Coach B is coming back. So, um, you
- 4:01know, it it's awesome. Awesome being
- 4:03around people that, you know, um, and
- 4:05and and for them also to see how much
- 4:07I've grown since then, right? So, that
- 4:10part is pretty cool. What's
- 4:12>> it like, you know, still going to work
- 4:13with coach Durkin being here and having
- 4:16that new staff, but you guys are the you
- 4:18guys are the guys that carried over.
- 4:19>> Yeah. Yeah. That's probably been good,
- 4:21too, cuz like I said, we know each
- 4:23other, right? we we know our strengths
- 4:24and weaknesses and um and how to play
- 4:27off of them. And um you know there's a
- 4:30when you've been with someone for a
- 4:32while um like you know for him he has
- 4:34like a certain level of confidence and
- 4:36faith in me when making certain
- 4:38decisions. Um and same thing like with
- 4:41him like we are all on the same page and
- 4:44so it it's it's it's been good. It's
- 4:46been really good.
- 4:47>> Yeah.
- 4:48>> He's a DC Bank has been to DC in this
- 4:51league. Hustler's been in DC in this
- 4:53league. What's it like, you know, being
- 4:54in a room with that that much
- 4:56experience? A lot of you guys have done
- 4:57this for a while here in the SEC.
- 4:59>> For for me, I'm extremely blessed.
- 5:01Extremely blessed um to be around a
- 5:03wealth of knowledge. Seriously, I don't
- 5:04take that for granted. I think those
- 5:06guys are um they they have been DCs.
- 5:09They will be DCS again um if not head
- 5:12coaches. And so, right now, I'm I'm
- 5:15trying to soak up all the knowledge I
- 5:16can from them. Um and, you know, stay
- 5:19humble and and hey, let's listen. like
- 5:21let's let's like they they've been doing
- 5:23this for a while so like let's see what
- 5:25they what they got going. Um and so far
- 5:27it's been really really good.
- 5:28>> Fantrell, what did it mean to you when
- 5:30when coach Gullers took over and you
- 5:32know coach Durkin kind of went to bat
- 5:33for you and was like you know this is
- 5:35the guy we got to keep on staff got to
- 5:36retain him moving into next season. I
- 5:38guess just what did that mean to you to
- 5:40have made that impact here at Auburn so
- 5:41far? Well, it it means a lot, right? Um,
- 5:44you know, you always as a young coach,
- 5:47uh, coming up in this deal, especially
- 5:49in a situation where, you know, how I
- 5:51got promoted, um, I my resume didn't say
- 5:54Auburn defensive line coach. It didn't.
- 5:56Um, and so, shoot, even when he first
- 5:58came in, like he could have went and
- 6:00hired any defensive line coach that he
- 6:02wanted cuz Jeremy had just left. U for
- 6:05myself to get promoted and and now um
- 6:08having him fight for me to to stay here
- 6:10a part of the staff. I think that's a
- 6:12big big deal. Um it also makes me hungry
- 6:16um to not let him down. Um and so you
- 6:20know like when you have your motivations
- 6:22and the external motivations that that's
- 6:23definitely one like he went to bat for
- 6:25me and I can't make him look crazy. I
- 6:26got to continue uh to get better right
- 6:29as a coach and continue to recruit good
- 6:31athletes and develop them.
- 6:33when you're recruiting, what do you look
- 6:34for in a defensive lineman?
- 6:35>> Yeah, I I think uh there's a combination
- 6:38of things. Um but there's like a certain
- 6:40amount of tra like of course you want
- 6:41size, right? Like you're in the SEC, you
- 6:43got to have some big dudes. You got to
- 6:44have some big boys. Um you want guys
- 6:46that can pass rush. Uh but like really
- 6:49the ex the the the biggest thing besides
- 6:52of intangibles or things like that, like
- 6:54I need to see if you got that dog in
- 6:56you, like if you going to run down the
- 6:57field, if you going to right like like
- 6:58play with some nastiness to you like
- 7:00that. That's what I want to see. um all
- 7:02the other things I feel like I I I can
- 7:04help develop and coach, right? Like do
- 7:07you got that dog in you? Do you have
- 7:09that pop about you? Like that difference
- 7:11maker in your mind that like I will not
- 7:13be beaten. And so, uh that that's like
- 7:15the that's like the biggest thing.
- 7:16That's the biggest thing for me.
- 7:18>> How nice is it for you knowing look, you
- 7:19don't have to start from scratch. You've
- 7:21recruited a lot of these guys in this 27
- 7:23class.
- 7:23>> Kind of got a head start a little bit
- 7:25there compared to, you know, some of
- 7:26these other guys on staff trying to play
- 7:28catch up a little bit. Yeah, that that's
- 7:29always uh that's always a good thing
- 7:31about um you know staying at a place and
- 7:33all those things and those relationships
- 7:35won't won't go anywhere. Uh I think it's
- 7:37big and so we just got to continue to do
- 7:39a good job and land some of them boys.
- 7:42>> Do you feel like that helps you like
- 7:44recruit like telling guys like, "Hey,
- 7:46I've been here four years like and I'm
- 7:48going to be here."
- 7:48>> Well, that that's a big thing, right?
- 7:50Cuz like you know, of course kids ask,
- 7:52uh how much longer you plan on being in
- 7:54Auburn? As long as Auburn will have,
- 7:56right? Like I mean that's that's just
- 7:58the the truth about it. So yeah, it
- 8:00definitely does. Um and it also helps
- 8:02when they see all right well coach
- 8:04Montreal is taking care of other guys in
- 8:07the state in the area. Um and those guys
- 8:09have gotten better and and they stayed
- 8:11right like they're still here. So I
- 8:13think that part helps too.
- 8:16>> What did you guys see out of Buddy
- 8:17Matthysse in the portal that made him
- 8:19somebody you guys wanted?
- 8:20>> Well well you remember we recruited
- 8:22Buddy out of high school. Uh didn't win
- 8:24him over. didn't get him at that time.
- 8:26Um, but the thing I saw from Buddy,
- 8:28right, like his stature, like I said,
- 8:30you want size usually, right? Uh, he
- 8:33don't check that box in length. He
- 8:35doesn't. Um, but like I just said, like
- 8:38he he had that dog about him, right?
- 8:39Like I'm watching him go against South
- 8:42Carolina and uh chasing down Lenora
- 8:45Cellers. Um, which is impressive for a
- 8:48freshman to do. And so the the f the
- 8:51future is bright. Of course, we got to
- 8:53keep them all here. Uh, but the future
- 8:55is bright and and so I'm excited about
- 8:57all those young guys that we have. Uh,
- 8:59but Buddy was one that you saw him play
- 9:02not only play, but play well in the SEC
- 9:04environment, right? Despite his size,
- 9:07right? Despite anything else, like he he
- 9:08played his butt off. So, super excited
- 9:10about Buddy, too.
- 9:12>> You were talking about Jordan and Malik
- 9:13being getting them back on the team this
- 9:15year. since you know their skill set,
- 9:17since you know them so well, having
- 9:19recruited them and getting them on
- 9:20campus, what are a couple things with
- 9:21them that you're looking for them to,
- 9:23you know, kind of take a step with in
- 9:24year two?
- 9:25>> Yeah, the leadership, right? Like last
- 9:28year they were just coming in trying to
- 9:29figure things out and all that stuff and
- 9:31um taking the the the right challenge
- 9:33and I've had and I've challenged them on
- 9:34it like, hey, like guys, get up here and
- 9:36get some extra work in, right? Not only
- 9:38yourself, get the group in and get some
- 9:40extra work in, whether it's watching
- 9:42film or uh anything like that. So, uh,
- 9:44the leadership part, um, and the
- 9:46technique will continually get better,
- 9:48right? Like I I tell them, right, it's
- 9:49not about, uh, it's not about getting a
- 9:51whole bunch of reps. It's about getting
- 9:53perfect reps and creating great, uh,
- 9:55muscle memory for yourself. And so, that
- 9:57part will continue to get better cuz
- 9:58they're intentional about their work.
- 10:00Uh, but the leadership part uh, is what
- 10:02I'm going to challenge them on is what I
- 10:03expect.
- 10:05>> You may have been asked this already,
- 10:07but I mean, you and Coach Durkin like
- 10:08the only guys stayed through the
- 10:09coaching change. what was that process
- 10:12like for you and you know why why did
- 10:14you want to stay and you know work with
- 10:15this new staff?
- 10:16>> Yeah, well the first thing is um myself
- 10:19and coach D we we've done well right um
- 10:23here at Auburn feel like we've laid a
- 10:24foundation um uh of our defense is going
- 10:28to we're going to stop the run and we're
- 10:30going to hit the quarterback, right? And
- 10:31so uh there's a familiarity there uh
- 10:34between us two. The next part was right,
- 10:36I knew Coach Golish. Um, you know, he
- 10:38recruited me out of high school. And so,
- 10:40uh, having the chance to work on his
- 10:42staff after not only being recruited by
- 10:45him and playing for him my freshman and
- 10:47sophomore year, uh, I I thought that was
- 10:49something that I couldn't pass up. And
- 10:50that the last part for me is I love
- 10:52Auburn. Um, like Auburn gave me my first
- 10:55shot at at being um a a P4 position
- 10:59coach. Um, and so myself, my wife, like
- 11:03my family, we come down and we we love
- 11:05it. Uh, and so like that that those
- 11:07those are really the points, man. It was
- 11:09big for me to stay.
- 11:10>> What do you remember about, you know,
- 11:11when you played for as a player playing
- 11:13for coaching about him back then? And I
- 11:15guess what do you see in him now?
- 11:17>> He he was uh so he was young. So it's so
- 11:19he was very young u at the time and uh I
- 11:22say young, he he's old now. Uh but no,
- 11:25he was very young at the time and like
- 11:26he was like very uh uh energetic uh but
- 11:29like super chill and laidback the same
- 11:31way that that he is now. Um but meant
- 11:34business, right? Like I mean was
- 11:35straightforward and and so like that
- 11:38part is is what I've seen. Um watching
- 11:41him like run a team meeting now is
- 11:43probably the biggest thing that I'm like
- 11:44wow like this is pretty cool. Uh because
- 11:47he while he spoke right but he he was a
- 11:50young guy on the staff at the time. So,
- 11:52uh, just kind of watching that and kind
- 11:54of seeing how he's developed, right, as
- 11:56far as like teaching leadership skills
- 11:58and all those different things that
- 12:00that's been pretty cool.
