- Molly: Hello and welcome to Bona and Mira Tarot, the delightfully irresponsible little sibling of Bona and Mira Tarot. My name is Molly and every week three Tarot cards will end this podcast. One gets fucked, one gets married and one gets pushed off a cliff. It's childish, it is completely subjective and it is surprisingly revealing because if you know me and you know Bona and Mira Tarot, you'll know that I don't believe the Tarot is about predicting the future. It's a mirror. a way of meeting yourself through symbolism and psychology, embodiment and the wisdom of the cards. And Bona Emeritaro takes exactly the same approach, just with a lot more giggling. put three tarot archetypes through the highly scientific and deeply philosophical game of fuck, marry, push off a cliff. Which archetype deserves your undying devotion? Which one's worth a passionate fling and which one absolutely needs to get into the sea? Along the way, we'll explore what the cards reveal about attraction, avoidance, projection, shadow, values, and the wonderfully strange ways we make meaning. Expect depth psychology, archetypes, embodiments, the odd tantric tangents, and plenty of opportunities to laugh at yourself. And if you want to take the game off the podcast and into your own tarot practice, then I've made something for you. A little field guide called Tarot After Dark. It's packed with ridiculous tarot games, guided reflections, explorations of projection and desire. So you can make your own terrible decisions. and then get curious about what the hell that might reveal about you. you can grab it completely free through the link in my show notes or the link in my bio on Instagram. So whether you're here for the psychology, the Tarot or your own deeply irrational grudge against the Seven of Cups, welcome to Bona and Miratorro. Let's shuffle the cards, suspend our dignity, and see who's getting married today. Hello and welcome back to another episode of Bona and Mira Tarot. I am absolutely honoured and delighted to welcome my guest today. So a big welcome to you, Lane. I'm so, so grateful you're here. Please could you tell the listeners who you are, what you do, your relationship to Tarot and your relationship to meaning making. Lane Smith: Sure. I'm Lane Smith. I'm a trans guy. I use they, he pronouns. I'm a writer. I'm the author of 78 Acts of Liberation, Tarot to Transform Our World, which was published in 2024. working on something else right now, but I'm not talking about it yet. Molly: Mm-hmm. Lane Smith: yeah, I I mean I've used tarot just for myself mostly since I was a teenager and also really into astrology since I was even younger and just the two really go hand in hand to me. and I guess I just have a long history of like social justice organizing, Molly: Okay. Lane Smith: which is what I brought together in the book was was mostly anti racist work, but a lot of other things too. just my experience from I'm I'm gonna be forty eight this year, so it's a long, long time as a as from a young adult to now that I've been doing tarot, doing social justice work, writing, and I got to bring those all all together in a book, which was such a great experience, feeling like I brought together so many different threads of myself into that and I hope to be able to keep doing that. Molly: Thank you so much. just an extraordinary book. And so I am Lane Smith: Thank you. Molly: deeply privileged that you're here with me today to play a very silly game to do with the tarot. But yeah, just a big thank you for the way in which you've weaved your personal story into your work, but a piece of work that is so needed. Yeah, will made me feel seen, but also I'm sure made lots of other people see, feel seen and heard and like they belong in the Tarot community, which is so, so important. Yeah, are you ready to maybe make some questionable choices on behalf of your Tarot? Lane Smith: yes, I'm always ready to make questionable choices Molly: Let's do it. Okay, cool. So I'm going to pull three cards. I'm using the Lightseers deck by Chris Ann, which is my go-to deck. But I know that you probably will have in your mind kind of the mother tongue deck for you, like the images that resonate with you the most. So feel free to, you know, bring in those images as well. But here we go. Awkward pause for a shuffle. let's see what we have got coming up. interesting. We've got two majors. The excitement. Lane Smith: I knew it. Molly: So we have got the eight of cups. We have got the Empress. And we have got the hanged man. Lane Smith: Ooh, okay, hmm. Molly: Okay, what are your initial responses or initial thoughts? Lane Smith: Mm. Well, I watched the first episode where you also talk about the Eight of Cups and Yeah, I really think of that as like a being true to yourself kind of kind of card. even if it means walking away, I don't think it has to always mean walking away, but regardless of anything else, it's it's being true to yourself kind of kind of card. which is attractive. And the Empress has like a very sensual, earthy, and Venusian energy, which is Also very hot. And the Hanged Man, I think a lot of like queer representations of the Hanged Man with like a Saint Sebastian kind of thing going on of you know, just this person in total surrender, whereas if you are a person who likes to provide that experience for somebody like I do, if you're more of like a dominant person, someone in that sort of like submissive pose is also very hot, so yes, I would like to fuck all of them But we're here for the interesting decision making part, so I'm struggling, I'm struggling. Molly: this is the crap. I know. Lane Smith: Let me think. Yeah. Molly: This is the crux of the game, right? Like I've had multiple, multiple recordings where people are like, can it not be fuck, fuck, fuck? And I'm like, no, no, can't be. And it can't be fuck, marry, marry, can't be marry, marry, fuck. Like we've got to make the difficult choices. So I really like what you said about the eight of cups. And, you know, it is a card that has come up on the, on the episode, on the podcast before in our first episode. For me, the Eight of Cups is just this, I really love the way that you said like being true to yourself. And I think the, I always described the Eight of Cups as like, we've got it's shit to stay and it's shit to leave. And the Five of Cups is almost like a, I'm sorry, the Eight of Cups is almost like a regeneration of the Five of Cups. The Five of Cups is like, it's not great. There's lots of grief, there's lots of pain. And I think when we get to the Eight of Cups, we, value ourselves enough to do the thing that is the most true to us, even if it causes some pain. So I think the Eight of Cups is really yummy. It gives like a real sense of like, this person values themselves so much that they're willing to walk away, they're willing to choose something difficult because they have that sense of self. But I also agree with you, the other two are incredibly sexy, so whatever do we do. Lane Smith: Well, I will say I'm going to toss over the Hanged Man because I feel like, I get drawn in by that person too often already. And I think that that person would like it. So Toss him. He's he wants to be a martyr or they want to be a martyr. Goodbye. Go for it. You can. Molly: my god. Lane Smith: I will hurt you in the way that you like. Bye. Molly: my God. Lane Smith: Push him, push him. I just I I have been with Averse. And You know, I think that card is associated with Neptune for a reason and you can get very confused when you're with that Molly: Bye. Lane Smith: person and I think I personally could do with less of that. Molly: I love that. That has made me so joyful to hear. That is such a funny take. The way that you described that kind of surrender, I always see Shabari vibes in the hanged man. Lane Smith: Yes, yes, I Molly: There's very much that kind of surrender to things that may not always be comfortable. It's not a super comfortable card, especially in the Rider Waite Smith depiction. They're hanging upside down by their foot. It doesn't look particularly comfortable, but there is that element of having to soften into that discomfort. The discomfort of waiting, the discomfort of not being able to take that step forward, the discomfort of hanging upside down by rope. And... There's something really yummy about that, that softening into the discomfort and the way that you have just flipped that to be like, I'm going to chuck them off the cliff because I think they'd like it. I mean, gold, gold for the podcast. Lane Smith: I mean bonus, I think they would like it and I need less of it. Like honestly, that person also just really is into like dissolving boundaries, which sometimes you need. If you have I think I have been attracted to that person because I have too hard boundaries. historically. So you know, I think the person that I ended up marrying, I was married for seven years. We split up five years ago. I've only been with one other person at all sexually or romantically. Since then I'm kind of picky. but like the person I married, you know, had very like top from the bottom kind of energy. Was just like submissive, but I will manipulate you. You know, like it's Molly: No, no, no. Lane Smith: like yes, I want you to take charge, I want you to take charge, but I'm going to kind of pull the strings from below. That is like Like to me that is very like hanged man energy and it has Molly: you Lane Smith: been very alluring to me. It's like, yes, Molly: Amen. Lane Smith: I would like you to put me in charge, but actually like I'm just gonna do whatever you want. I think there's a kinky relationship to be had with the hanged man, and It doesn't have to go too far in the way that it did with me, but I I've had enough of it. I've had enough of it. F for me personally. Like I think it was good for me to experience that in some ways because and it helped me to be less holding people at a distance and b and just being being s so I I'm a Capricorn rising, like a hard boundaries, like like It was good to have somebody kind of like get up in underneath all that and fuck around for me and not stay there permanently. so I could do with less of that now that I feel like I have taken some lessons from it. So Molly: Mmm. Lane Smith: that one can go. Molly: Bye bye. Bye bye. I love like there's something really like I really love the the story but like behind that like that the lesson has been learned but and it like at the time like had we pulled this three set of cards at a different point in your life like you may have made a different decision so I look like I love Lane Smith: yeah. I mean I literally chose to marry that person. So and I would never get married again, period. it's ness like I really I think marriage is not for me as an institution or whatever. But like for the purposes of this game, like I I would like be in a long term committed relationship with somebody. and Molly: Amen. Lane Smith: for that, I would have to choose the eight of cups. There's no way. Like for for staying true to yourself, I would stay with a person who is staying true to themselves and just I would marry the concept of staying true to yourself, right? Like I am committed To that idea, practice, whatever, long long term, forever, right? So, like, for sure, that is something that I always want to be in my life. The ability to walk away if I have to, or whatever it is to know myself deeply enough to do what I need to do to be. be my authentic self and be true to myself and not disappoint myself. So that that's Molly: I'm not. Lane Smith: that's what I would marry or, you know, stay committed to would be the stay Molly: Mmm. Lane Smith: true to yourself card for sure. Which means Molly: Yeah. Lane Smith: we get to fuck the Empress, which is like Molly: Yes. Lane Smith: such a fucking win, right? Like I mean the the Empress is fucking Molly: We're winning at life. Lane Smith: for winning and like absolute fullness of I mean, often often she's depicted as a f very full bodied person, pregnant or not. You know, she's abundance, personified, right? She's so I mean o someone who's like associated with Venus is very like Giving and I mean I think when I was thinking of like who I would most like to fuck in the whole deck, I was thinking of like Queen of Pentacles is you know, has that like definitely I want someone earthy and sensual, someone who is, you know interested and invested in physical pleasure. Someone needs to be in the physical realm here with us, right? Molly: No, no, no. Lane Smith: To appreciate sensations, sensuality, right? And the Empress certainly does that. And you know, I think of Queens and the Empress too as being sort of more the more like emotionally intelligent. of, you know, gender aside, right, like I don't think queens have to be women. But like I you know, as far as like if a if a page is sort of like the curious exploratory person of the set in the courts and then the knight has more sort of like drive and focus, the the queen is one who is has the sort of like social, emotional, like is sharing with you and sharing with others, Molly: Thank you. Lane Smith: right? It's like full of like what that suit has and is like sharing it around. Whereas like I think when you by the time you get to the king, that's more about like testing the limits of that suit and sort of like mastery and and that kind of thing. But Molly: Yeah. Lane Smith: the the the sh sharing the abundance of what you have is like a really good place to be, you know, for sex and I think I think the Empress too. Like like the like all the queens, the Empress has that similar sharing kind of energy and full of abundance and sensuality and grounded in earthiness. fuck yeah, let's go. Like regardless too of gender for the Empress Molly: Yeah. Lane Smith: as well. Like whatever. He, she, they, whatever, the Empress can get it. Molly: When is it happening? When is the Empress coming? I'm ready. I'm ready. Lane Smith: We're gonna eat good food and we're gonna we're gonna enjoy like the f the you know the feeling Molly: Yeah. Lane Smith: of all the things go slow and feel everything, you know. Molly: Thank you so much. I love that you bring the Queens in and I actually posted on Instagram the other day around kind of how I view the court cards because I've been working a lot with the court cards recently and I've whittled it down to some key keywords and the word that I use for the Queens versus the King so like the King's steward, the energy of the suit. they are kind of like the steward of knowledge of that. So they've gathered the knowledge and then they're stewarding out. Whereas the queens very much are the embodiment of that suit. And I've purposely used the word embody because it's kind of like, it's, they're at that point where they're not just learning about the experience, they're like totally embodying that. And the queen of pentacles for me is, would probably be on my top three of like, who would I flunk in the tarot deck? Lane Smith: Yeah. Molly: I find her slightly intimidating purely because of my own, like my own relationship to intimacy for a long time, it is and has been very disembodied Lane Smith: Mm. Molly: just because of my own relationship with body, right? so she would be, yeah. Lane Smith: Yeah. No, I can relate to that for sure. Yeah. Before coming out as trans, before being on testosterone, I was like, I'm not a body. I don't have a body. I'm a brain, right? Like I'm like Molly: Mmm. Lane Smith: nothing. I didn't I didn't even until taking testosterone, I really didn't have I didn't know what it was to be like horny. Definitely wasn't not to be like randomly horny. Or just like I just didn't I had to like really work on like building that up to like get myself Molly: in it. Lane Smith: in the mood to wanna do it. Even if I I could like really be into somebody, but I just didn't have that libido at all. And to have it now is so great. It's Molly: Yeah. Lane Smith: so great. It's so great to like wanna be in my body and to feel things. It's so amazing. but yeah, Molly: what, like. Lane Smith: it's a big change. from what I had for, you know, the first like forty years of my life. Molly: What a gift. I Lane Smith: Yes. Molly: hear you so much and I really relate to that feeling of being a walking brain and Lane Smith: Yeah. Molly: feeling disconnected from body. My experiences have... I'm working on it, right? I'm working on it. I find that the Queen of Pentacles would be a very challenging mirror for me because she's so embodied and the empress would do the same I think. I think in like now I'm like yeah fuck the empress, of course I do like she is embodiment like embodied, she is pleasure embodied, she is abundance and wildness embodied and I just always picture her in this this field of wild flowers just absolutely gorgeous Lane Smith: Yes. yes. Yes. Yes. Molly: and then there's a part of me that is like I would have to get naked with the empress and I would have Lane Smith: Okay. Molly: to be in my body and then I'm like all of a sudden I can feel myself like projecting. I'm like, God, no, don't look at me. But so I think she would be quite like she would be confronting, but that's my stuff. So in the imaginary Tarot world where I don't or sorry in the imaginary Tarot world of this particular podcast. where I'm allowed to remove kind of like things from my brain. Let's imagine that I don't have those projections and I don't Lane Smith: Yeah. Molly: have that very confronting mirror. We're gonna have a wonderful night. I still, like Eight of Cups for me is an absolute marry, 100 % agree. And the Empress is like, there's just a part of me that is like, the poor hanged man, we've had such a difficult choice. Lane Smith: Yeah. Molly: Because there is a part of me that thinks, I personally have a really interesting relationship with patience and control because I'm someone that like always loves to control the outcome. I feel the need to control how people perceive me, how like things happen and so I am in the practice for the last five years I would say. I call it the practice of chaos. which is essentially practicing that experience of like, I can't always control how I'm perceived. I can't always control the outcome. I just have to be in the moment. And there's something delicious about the hanged man that speaks to my practice of like surrendering to what is rather than trying to control the outcome. So I'm totally on board with you. I just have a small sadness that the hangman. would like of course he has to go off the cliff against the empress but i just have to maybe like blow him kisses as he goes off. Lane Smith: But you you can go down and catch him. I don't mind if you go down and catch him. You can have him. I'm just saying I had enough, but like, you know, I feel I was very controlling in in my marriage, I would say. I was I was a very like in control of myself and controlling boundaried person, which is, you know what made me attractive to him and what made him attractive to me was that he was not he was not. You know? He was you know he didn't have it together and he's like, please put me together and I was like, I would be more than happy to Right. And it's like, you know, and then we came up against each other's projections and all of those kinds of things and, you know, both left changed, I think. Molly: Mm-hmm. Lane Smith: Hopefully for the better. I mean I'm just saying maybe you still need more dose of the hanged man, whereas I have had my fill. Molly: You've heard before. I will hope that in pushing the hanged man off the cliff that he still has rope attached and I can just like, Lane Smith: for sure. Yeah. Molly: I can just, you know, like, you came off, Lane Smith: Yeah. Molly: I'm going to pull you back up for a second round. Yeah, that's. Lane Smith: Yes, yes, yes. No, thinking of who would like not be harmed by it or who would like it was a big part of my decision making there. So like obviously the Empress doesn't want to be booted over the cliff, right? No. So the hangman will be fine. Molly: No, she'd look at you and be like, are you serious me? You're gonna push me off the cliff? Of course she's never going off the cliff. Lane Smith: Right. There's no way. no, no. Of course I would never. Molly: So I feel like we've locked in on the decision. So I have two final questions for you. One of them you've Lane Smith: Sure. Molly: already answered for me. So I wonder if maybe you can explore kind of second and third place. But my questions are, which card is the hottest card or the sexiest card in the deck and who is the biggest red flag. Lane Smith: Yeah. so I saw I saw the first episode, so I thought you might ask that. And so I prepared in advance my all time favorite Queen of Pentacles, but in this deck it's the Nurturer of Coins that is the hottest hottest Molly: you've come prepared. Lane Smith: Of any like I I have a boner for this card, like you would not believe. I just like who I don't this is Tarot of the Cosmic Seed by Lelania Simone. I am so fucking hot for this card. Like, I don't know. This this card Molly: and Lane Smith: could be a butch Woman could be a trans man, I don't know. I don't care. Like I'm just like, whoever that is, could be a cis man. I don't care. I don't know. But what they have going on I I have the biggest boner for this card specifically. as far as yeah, I mean, I don't know. Gosh, there are so many cards. By myself, the Ace of Wands, maybe. I don't know. Like I'm like, I don't have anybody right now. I'm just like give me a little time alone with Ace of Wands. Whatever, that's lots of options. I will really fuck with the Scorpio energy of death. I would I mean I So many, so many, so many. I could probably find something really hot about every single card. Molly: This podcast, it has been, is and has been so far, so wonderful to record. I'm meeting so many amazing people. I'm just absolutely loving the experience. And the one, I didn't realize how sexy I find a lot of cards in the deck. I'm like going through each episode and I'm like, no, that card is kind of sexy. wait, that card's also kind of sexy. I'm just like, maybe I just fancy most of the tarot deck, I think. Lane Smith: Right, even the ones you were talking about, swords and like how anxious they might be. I was like, I'm not bothered. Let me shut your brain off. I would be happy to do that as a service for you. will I can imagine a scenario for pretty much any card in the deck. Molly: So who's the biggest red flag? Lane Smith: Well I know how psychology works and you asking me my biggest ick is gonna r reveal more about me, right? And what I'm like I just think I might as well like cut to the chase and just talk about like my biggest red flag. I think the thing that I've only had two partners in a long, long, long time 'cause I was married for a long time and then I been with one person since then. But they were, you know, they were different genders, different sexualities. There's like a consensus of two diverse people about like the worst thing about me. I think both would say they had a difficult time with how strong my convictions are. And I I have been chill. So I don't know, you could put that as like Seven of Wands. You could put that as like Knight of Swords or something of just like how strong my convictions are. and I I think that that is I do have strong convictions about like politics and morals. I think sometimes when I have a lot of emotion in a relationship with somebody, I may say how I'm feeling or what I'm observing and and I'm I have a story around it or I have meaning making around it that it happens sort of automatically and I think what my past two partners have told me is that I have I'm too convincing. Like I'm too like the story that I'm telling about it, or like I have such conviction or I have such like ability to like make meaning of this is like they f feel drawn in by what I'm saying or convinced by what I'm saying, whether it's true or not. Like they don't feel able to hold on to their reality of of what's going on because Molly: I'm ready. Lane Smith: I'm too convincing. Right. So I could be like, I'm observing this and this and this, so I think you are fucking with me, right? Or I think you're, you know, just like manipulating me or something and they're like so convinced by me that they're like, Maybe I am. Maybe you're right. Maybe you're seeing something deeper in me that I don't even know and maybe I am doing what you're saying. But they're like their feeling Molly: Mm. Lane Smith: that they've told me is that like you just Create this meaning and create this story that is so compelling that I feel like it could be true. And Molly: Hmm. Lane Smith: that's like too much power to have over the narrative, right? And so like I Molly: Thank Lane Smith: think really my red flag is the magician. Like it's it's like it's this kind of power. And and you know, the magician is associated with Mercury, so I feel like a power of like story making and and meaning making and and just of just like confidence in your own power, intuition, magic, whatever, that is like too much. You know, it's too like it can be too much. But like, you know, it's feedback that I have received that I could be a bit too sure of myself, in in what I'm intuiting and what I'm observing and what I'm reading Molly: No, no. Lane Smith: and the patterns that I'm recognizing and the meaning that I'm making of of all of that. Molly: Yeah. Lane Smith: so I guess I need someone to have a strong sense of their own truth with me. Molly: which is why the eight of cups was a good choice for Marit. Lane Smith: Yeah. Right. Right. Exactly. Right. So I was you know, the magician, like, yeah, I don't really love the magician. I don't like a guy that's like seems to be so sure of himself or whatever, like that arrogant asshole, right? Like of course like so that's that I mean, I think I do that less now that I'm more have taken that feedback more, but like I think before and like someone who seems so like, I know everything, I'm you know I'm the shit, right? It's like, fuck that guy, right? And then like 'cause that was like projection, Molly: and we'll have them. Lane Smith: right? Like I see how I can be that guy. Molly: thank you so much for one, your vulnerability and your honesty, but also for really making it so visible what the intention of like the kind of deeper meaning of the podcast is. Because of course, the game is really fun. You are hilarious, by the way. Lane Smith: Yeah. Molly: I am taking many of the jokes and the quips and they are going to be the only thing I think about when I see these cards the next time. But of course there's that deeper layer of meaning of projection and shadow and value. And so I really value the way that you've kind of talked us through that experience. And I'm sure the listeners will also have found that. that really valuable to see that kind of, know, I ask about the red flag because I'm really interested and I think it's a funny, funny question, but the deeper meaning of that question is around projection. I like Lane Smith: Mm-hmm. Molly: so, so appreciate the kind of making it really visible that experience of going, I hate that. And then go, is that me? Am I the problem? Am I here? Lane Smith: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well I I really, really value, you know, self awareness and, you know, I just like I think, you know, speaking to someone like you who also really values like depth and self awareness allows me to be lighter, you know, and and access my more like fun side. It's like if I feel like I have to bring the depth, then I can't then I have to be more serious. But if I know Molly: I know. Lane Smith: that like we're on the same page about like how deep things are gonna go, then I feel lighter. You know, I Molly: Mmm. Lane Smith: feel more able to play when the depth is a given. You know, so I appreciate Molly: Yeah. Lane Smith: you allowing the space for that. This is so I was so excited. I was like an instant yes for me to like do this because I was like The death and the fun together is like I have Leo this like it's Leo season as we're talking right now. I have this really rad shirt by this is a the strength card from deck by Pixel Occult. That's the that's the card. but anyway, Molly: good. Lane Smith: I have Leo in the eighth house. So it's just like you know, it's just one of the in in a in astrology, the eighth house is kind of a dark hidden house and that's where my joy and lightness lives as well as Sagittarius where my son, Mercury, Mars, and Neptune all are in the twelfth house. you know, Molly: Thank Lane Smith: and Sag and Leo are sort of like light and fun and play and they're in my like darkest houses. And I just I need I need to have the depth there to be able to access that Molly: Mmm. Lane Smith: joy and lightness and humor. I have to have it. Molly: Yeah. I like, I'm so, yeah, I'm deeply grateful for your words because this is, you're just, you're reflecting back to me and articulating exactly the kind of space that I want to create Lane Smith: Yeah. Molly: is the space where people come, they have fun, they have really funny conversations and they can kind of remove that layer of dignity. They can be super vulnerable and honest and then kind of go, wait, what's the deal? Like. Hmm, what is the deeper meaning here? Like why did I get an immediate ick with this card? So and I think that's the best way to learn tarot as well like to combine the depth with with fun and joy and Lane Smith: Totally. Molly: Yeah, and silliness. I think that Lane Smith: Yeah. Molly: we need a little bit more silliness in the tarot community and and everywhere so I am so yeah, so deeply grateful for your wisdom, your jokes. I'm going to so many funny quotes for the podcast. And yeah, I'm just going to say one final thank you to you for coming on before we bring this episode to a close.
