- 4:06Speaker 2: let's get to hurdling.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Today. I am chatting with Kia Stokes.
- 4:17Speaker 2: She is a trainer to many, everyone from God, good
- 4:22Speaker 2: friends of mine, to people like you may know Ashley Graham,
- 4:26Speaker 2: Shane Mitchell. She has her award winning Stoked method. I
- 4:31Speaker 2: know you are serted up. How many certifications do you have?
- 4:34Speaker 1: I think, well, you know my website needs to be redone.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I think probably whatever it might be thirteen fourteen now
- 4:42Speaker 1: depending you know, COVID caused me to like dive in
- 4:45Speaker 1: even deeper because we've had extra time.
- 4:47Speaker 2: So fourteen a lot of certifications, a lot of certifications,
- 4:52Speaker 2: A trainer, I'd loved trainer by all.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Kira, how you doing today?
- 4:56Speaker 4: I'm fantastic. How are you?
- 4:58Speaker 2: I'm stoke, good good, I'm soaked man feels appropriate, We're
- 5:03Speaker 2: I mean, obviously Kira Stokes. But was that like a
- 5:06Speaker 2: natural naming situation for you or was that still like
- 5:10Speaker 2: kind of difficult to come up with.
- 5:11Speaker 1: You know what's funny is that I laugh about it
- 5:14Speaker 1: now because I think back to when I first began
- 5:17Speaker 1: my career as a trainer. I did not you stoked
- 5:22Speaker 1: at all. Like it didn't it's so weird. But it
- 5:25Speaker 1: didn't even click in my brain that that was a
- 5:27Speaker 1: word that really could encompass a feeling, a method, a
- 5:33Speaker 1: type of training until about honestly ten years into my
- 5:38Speaker 1: career when I when and that, which is when I
- 5:40Speaker 1: really realized that I had a method versus just a
- 5:44Speaker 1: way of training people like I think that's also in
- 5:46Speaker 1: my brain where I started to feel like it was
- 5:50Speaker 1: the right time to call it a method because it
- 5:52Speaker 1: had been tested and proven and used on actual human beings.
- 5:57Speaker 1: So you know, Stokes, you I'll say, like it's the
- 6:02Speaker 1: perfect last name. It was like I was born a brand, right.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I wish it was Stoked, but it's Stokes and just
- 6:11Speaker 1: through the dion there. You know, you got to do
- 6:13Speaker 1: what you got to do. And uh, you know the
- 6:15Speaker 1: word I think really does it resonates with me in
- 6:18Speaker 1: so many ways because the word stoked means, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 1: a feeling or a state of exhilaration or excitement, right,
- 6:27Speaker 1: and my method, I really hope that it does excite
- 6:31Speaker 1: people about fitness and takes them to a higher state
- 6:34Speaker 1: of self awareness and one that they're really pumped about.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Before we wind it back and get into a little
- 6:41Speaker 2: bit of your backstory, I'm curious, what does the Stoked method,
- 6:46Speaker 2: what does that really entail? Explain to us a little
- 6:48Speaker 2: bit about what that looks like.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's it's it's actually quite hard for
- 6:54Speaker 1: me to define, and I feel like it gets harder
- 6:57Speaker 1: as the method evolves. You know, it is the boiler plate,
- 7:03Speaker 1: like if I were to put give you like you know,
- 7:06Speaker 1: as it's written, it is a science backed functional flow
- 7:10Speaker 1: of movement, you know, and there's so many different ways
- 7:13Speaker 1: to break that down because there are so many different
- 7:18Speaker 1: classes or workouts that comprise the Stokes method. But really,
- 7:22Speaker 1: what from the feeling aspect or side of things. It
- 7:27Speaker 1: is that self awareness and that connection and that mind
- 7:32Speaker 1: body connection that makes movement so much more efficient and effective.
- 7:37Speaker 1: And this is the best way to describe it. It's
- 7:40Speaker 1: kind of like a book or a chapter in a book,
- 7:43Speaker 1: and that every word when you read a book or
- 7:46Speaker 1: you reading a chapter of a book, every word matters, right.
- 7:49Speaker 1: You can't skip a word because if you skip a word,
- 7:52Speaker 1: you're going to miss something. And the same, in my opinion,
- 7:55Speaker 1: should hold true with movement. Every move including the transitions
- 8:01Speaker 1: in and out of movement, should matter.
- 8:04Speaker 4: It should make sense.
- 8:05Speaker 2: So someone that hears all of that, they're like, cool,
- 8:08Speaker 2: sounds good, But I'm still not sure what I'm doing
- 8:10Speaker 2: when I come to do some sort of Stoked method class.
- 8:13Speaker 2: So give me a snippet of what that could look like,
- 8:17Speaker 2: although I understand that we're not going to get the
- 8:19Speaker 2: whole picture from one class.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Yeah, perfect example. I think.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I think the best you know, particular workout to use
- 8:25Speaker 1: as an example is Stoked Shred three sixty, which you know,
- 8:30Speaker 1: the names of all of my classes have honestly evolved.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Or changed over the years.
- 8:35Speaker 1: And kind of you know, because my movement evolves and
- 8:41Speaker 1: as everybody's right, so, but shred this particular class. I
- 8:46Speaker 1: think the first thing it was called back in nineteen
- 8:49Speaker 1: ninety oh my gosh, nineteen ninety five, it was total
- 8:54Speaker 1: body conditioning, you know, and then it became again total
- 8:58Speaker 1: body three six, and then once I realized my name,
- 9:02Speaker 1: which was Stoked, it became Stoke three sixty, and then
- 9:04Speaker 1: it became Stokes Shred three sixty. And you know, in
- 9:08Speaker 1: terms of a basic circuit that you would experience there,
- 9:10Speaker 1: it's a combination of I hate to call it hit
- 9:13Speaker 1: training because to me, hit training, you know, as we know,
- 9:17Speaker 1: you really challenge your body, like intensity wise, you are
- 9:21Speaker 1: like at the pinnacle of your intensity and then you
- 9:24Speaker 1: break and you give your body that time to recover.
- 9:26Speaker 1: That's what hit training is, right, It's allowing yourself to
- 9:29Speaker 1: heart rate to come up, heart rate to come down. Well,
- 9:32Speaker 1: in stokeshread three sixty, it's almost it's Stoke style hits.
- 9:35Speaker 1: So yes, your heart rate's going to come down, but
- 9:38Speaker 1: you're never going to be stock. You're not going to
- 9:40Speaker 1: be quote resting, You're going to be performing that transition
- 9:43Speaker 1: move that will take you right back to the beginning
- 9:46Speaker 1: of the circuit. So say you're doing a squat press, right,
- 9:51Speaker 1: you've got dumbbells. You're doing a squat press. You then
- 9:54Speaker 1: turn that particular move into a power movement. So you
- 9:58Speaker 1: take the squat press, you put the way down, and
- 10:00Speaker 1: you take it into a squat broad jump and then
- 10:04Speaker 1: you know, hands down, whatever shoulder tabsn't be up, whatever
- 10:08Speaker 1: it is. You're progressing a strength move into a power movement. Then,
- 10:12Speaker 1: because that move at some point has your hands on
- 10:14Speaker 1: the ground, you keep those hands on the ground. You
- 10:15Speaker 1: go into mountain climbers and there's your cardiocore, and then
- 10:19Speaker 1: you do your active mobility where one foot comes outside
- 10:21Speaker 1: the hand and then the other. So you're creating the
- 10:23Speaker 1: story of like ebbs and flows of energy and ebbs
- 10:26Speaker 1: and cloths of how you're taxing your body strength, power, endurance,
- 10:30Speaker 1: mobility to make bring yourself back to the beginning, which
- 10:35Speaker 1: is the time where you're like, okay, reset and refocus, right.
- 10:38Speaker 1: So it's about it's kind of the shifting of energy
- 10:42Speaker 1: throughout a circuit and learning to embrace that and not.
- 10:46Speaker 1: I think what people have you know, find most interesting
- 10:49Speaker 1: when they first try the method is they'll say, oh
- 10:52Speaker 1: my gosh, like do we ever take a break, do
- 10:54Speaker 1: we like, where's the break? And I'm like, well, your
- 10:58Speaker 1: break is that active mobility exercise where your heart rate's
- 11:02Speaker 1: coming down, but you're still moving and you're still preparing
- 11:04Speaker 1: your body to continue with movement rather than just stopping
- 11:09Speaker 1: and standing and looking at your phone or texting or
- 11:12Speaker 1: you know. It's like you have got to be one
- 11:13Speaker 1: hundred percent focused in that moment. And once you give
- 11:18Speaker 1: this a chance and you give yourself, your complete self
- 11:22Speaker 1: to this workout, there's nothing like it.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I love this description and it begs the question that
- 11:28Speaker 2: do you remember the first time in your life where
- 11:32Speaker 2: movement felt like that to you, where it just felt
- 11:35Speaker 2: absolutely so I want to say utopian, but that feels
- 11:39Speaker 2: like a little bit aggressive, maybe just like absolutely absolutely
- 11:44Speaker 2: so ideal that you are beyond happiness.
- 11:47Speaker 4: I think that. And again, it took me years to
- 11:50Speaker 4: realize where where my.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Desire within the method to create this constant flow of
- 11:58Speaker 1: movement came from. But it it was one hundred percent
- 12:01Speaker 1: of my background in gymnastics. Like when I started to
- 12:04Speaker 1: really tear.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Down, like okay, how did I why does my brain
- 12:07Speaker 4: work this way?
- 12:08Speaker 1: Why why is it so hard for me to just
- 12:11Speaker 1: be like no, if you're on the ground, just get
- 12:14Speaker 1: up right, just stand up. And it's like, because when
- 12:16Speaker 1: you watch a floor routine, do you ever see a
- 12:19Speaker 1: gymnast not connect one move to the next. There's always
- 12:23Speaker 1: a way in and always a way out. That's gorgeous, right,
- 12:26Speaker 1: So you know in my brain, that's like how my
- 12:30Speaker 1: brain works. It's how it's constantly thinking, is like, okay,
- 12:34Speaker 1: we're up, how do we get down? But in a
- 12:36Speaker 1: way that makes sense for your body, in a way
- 12:38Speaker 1: that connects your body. So I think, to me, when
- 12:44Speaker 1: I look back on my love of movement, where it
- 12:46Speaker 1: stems from, I really think it's that what Resonate made
- 12:50Speaker 1: most about gymnastics was that constant, that constant flow and
- 12:54Speaker 1: just feeling so connected all the time.
- 12:56Speaker 3: And how old were you when you started doing gymnastics.
- 13:01Speaker 1: I think I was seven in early seven, in early seven.
- 13:05Speaker 1: But like, it wasn't you know, it wasn't a gymnastics
- 13:08Speaker 1: experience where I wasn't going to the gym every day
- 13:11Speaker 1: for gymnastics. It wasn't that, you know, I wasn't destined
- 13:15Speaker 1: for that kind of relationship with gymnastics. It was also
- 13:18Speaker 1: my parents saying, like we're not driving you to gymnastics
- 13:21Speaker 1: every day. Like it's not like kind of seeing like
- 13:24Speaker 1: she's okay, she's good, but she's not like fantastic, like
- 13:27Speaker 1: well twice a week, twice a week's a week is good,
- 13:29Speaker 1: you know, so I think but I will say that,
- 13:33Speaker 1: you know, gymnastics in general, just the that focus on
- 13:38Speaker 1: core strength, right, that focus that in need. It's such
- 13:41Speaker 1: a base of gymnastics in general, is having that awareness
- 13:47Speaker 1: of your core. I can't I'm so grateful for that, right,
- 13:51Speaker 1: because it's very rare that in sports that is like
- 13:54Speaker 1: the core that's really as you know, the core focused.
- 13:57Speaker 1: But it truly is, and I think it really made
- 13:59Speaker 1: me just grow up with that strength and the core
- 14:04Speaker 1: that I know. It gave me that at a young age.
- 14:07Speaker 2: And that's so important because as you're kind of getting
- 14:09Speaker 2: at here, like that's something that so many athletes don't
- 14:12Speaker 2: take the time to really home in on. Especially I mean,
- 14:16Speaker 2: I'm a huge runner. I mean everything that we do,
- 14:19Speaker 2: regardless of what your sport is, it stems from the core.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Yet so many of us don't take the time to
- 14:26Speaker 2: really give that that important attention that it really needs.
- 14:30Speaker 4: You know.
- 14:30Speaker 1: I actually I just did a post about it yesterisks.
- 14:32Speaker 1: I feel like every once in a while people need
- 14:34Speaker 1: a refresher on the fact that it's not your you know,
- 14:37Speaker 1: abs are great, right, Like people think core that if
- 14:39Speaker 1: they don't know, if they don't know better, they're not
- 14:41Speaker 1: taught better. Core to them is just ab strength, right,
- 14:45Speaker 1: It's just being strong in your abs. But it's not
- 14:47Speaker 1: Your core is literally everything in your body aside from
- 14:50Speaker 1: your lips, like, aside from the arms and legs, here's
- 14:54Speaker 1: your core. Even the insertion of your lap muscles. So
- 14:56Speaker 1: it's like without that based strength. Man, it's not just
- 14:59Speaker 1: about like how you work out stronger, but it's how
- 15:02Speaker 1: you move through life stronger, just the daily activities. So yeah,
- 15:07Speaker 1: that has always been and that is a big part,
- 15:10Speaker 1: big focus in my method is just everything revolving around
- 15:14Speaker 1: the core.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Okay, So Gymnast at seven, where are we growing.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Up upstate New York? So Delmar, New York, which is
- 15:24Speaker 1: outside of Albany. It's like, you know, maybe five miles
- 15:28Speaker 1: outside of Albany and great little town, great town to
- 15:32Speaker 1: grow up in. I would I can't. You know, all
- 15:34Speaker 1: my Dell Martians out there, hello, but I can't. I
- 15:37Speaker 1: can't say that I would move back there. But I
- 15:39Speaker 1: absolutely loved growing up there. You know, it was a wonderful,
- 15:42Speaker 1: a wonderful childhood that I had just a great just
- 15:46Speaker 1: a great, easy place to grow up, like not a
- 15:48Speaker 1: pressure filled place, not you know, not aware. I think,
- 15:53Speaker 1: I don't know if I've talked about this for it,
- 15:54Speaker 1: but I remember when I went to Boston College. I
- 15:56Speaker 1: think sometimes you don't realize how sheltered you are where
- 15:59Speaker 1: you grow up until you have more of a big
- 16:02Speaker 1: city experience. Not that Boston. I mean, Boston is a city, right,
- 16:06Speaker 1: It's not New York. But I remember just being a
- 16:10Speaker 1: freshman of Boston College and walking into one of my
- 16:13Speaker 1: friend's dorm room and I remember her like she had
- 16:16Speaker 1: a Prada bag, and I remember looking at it and
- 16:20Speaker 1: being like, what's that triangle? Like just not like where
- 16:25Speaker 1: I grew up, Like we just didn't, we didn't brands
- 16:28Speaker 1: like that, Like it just wasn't it wasn't a focus.
- 16:32Speaker 4: It wasn't.
- 16:34Speaker 1: I didn't grow up with parents that cared about any
- 16:37Speaker 1: of that or even like it just wasn't a thing,
- 16:40Speaker 1: you know, it was just it was just a basic,
- 16:44Speaker 1: wonderful childhood to be honest.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Same Kia and I don't.
- 16:48Speaker 2: I don't even think I could have told you what
- 16:50Speaker 2: a product logo looked like.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Moved to New York.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Yeah, and this girl she was from Rye, you know,
- 16:57Speaker 1: which we know is right near you know, it's actually
- 16:59Speaker 1: right around me. I live in Larchmont, so it's like
- 17:02Speaker 1: it was Ryan. It was this whole group of girls
- 17:04Speaker 1: from Rye. And they literally looked at me like I
- 17:05Speaker 1: had five heads, Like they were like, you don't know
- 17:08Speaker 1: what this is. And I was like, I think I
- 17:10Speaker 1: was wearing my Forenza Limited sweater backwards with the the
- 17:13Speaker 1: you know in the and I was like, it's not
- 17:17Speaker 1: from a limited, you know so, But but I really
- 17:21Speaker 1: like you guys turn in that place or fashion bug.
- 17:25Speaker 4: You know, I can't.
- 17:27Speaker 1: I can't think of a better way to grow up,
- 17:29Speaker 1: to be honest, than to not not be kind of
- 17:33Speaker 1: jaded with that. Not that not that all people are,
- 17:36Speaker 1: you know, but I'm just saying, like, to not be
- 17:38Speaker 1: concerned about it.
- 17:40Speaker 3: You go to Boston College. When you are there, are
- 17:43Speaker 3: you playing sports?
- 17:45Speaker 4: No?
- 17:45Speaker 1: I played field hockey in high school a little bit,
- 17:47Speaker 1: but Boston College field hockey, man was you know, They're
- 17:50Speaker 1: a killer team.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Shout out to the Eagles.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Backtracking to high school as a gymnast, I was, you know,
- 17:57Speaker 1: I competed on my high school team. I had the
- 17:59Speaker 1: boy friend at the time, and he brought me to
- 18:02Speaker 1: this place called mike Muschudos Nautilus.
- 18:06Speaker 4: And it was tiny, I mean the small.
- 18:10Speaker 1: It was like the small you can't call it a gym.
- 18:12Speaker 1: It was so small, right, and it was like a sweatshop.
- 18:16Speaker 1: And I he brought me in there, and he always says, like,
- 18:20Speaker 1: I you never left, like I created a monster. I
- 18:23Speaker 1: remember walking in there and like begging my parents for
- 18:25Speaker 1: a membership and being like, I just I love this environment.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Like everybody's trying to like get stronger, and I wanted
- 18:33Speaker 1: to get stronger.
- 18:34Speaker 4: I was a very skin I was very skinny as
- 18:37Speaker 4: a kid.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Like I've always like that's I don't have any big
- 18:41Speaker 1: like transformation story, you know, but I will say that
- 18:44Speaker 1: I was the kind of skinny runt in high school
- 18:47Speaker 1: and strong as anything, you know, triceps since everythimp I've
- 18:51Speaker 1: had him forever. But I was really small and I
- 18:54Speaker 1: remember going stepping into this gym and being like, this
- 18:57Speaker 1: is where I can get stronger and like not get bigger,
- 19:02Speaker 1: but be like feel strong. You know, feel my best.
- 19:06Speaker 1: And I freaking loved it there. And so when I
- 19:11Speaker 1: got to Boston College. Back then, where you worked out
- 19:15Speaker 1: in school was called the Plex, and I would go
- 19:18Speaker 1: to the Plex and I'd get all my roommates. Every
- 19:21Speaker 1: day I'd be like, right after classes, I'm like, we're
- 19:23Speaker 1: all going to the Plex.
- 19:24Speaker 4: We're all going to work out.
- 19:25Speaker 1: That was my first experience ever taking a group fitness
- 19:28Speaker 1: class was at and I can I can't remember her name,
- 19:31Speaker 1: but I remember what she looked like, and I was
- 19:33Speaker 1: in awe of this instructor. I was like, how amazing.
- 19:37Speaker 1: She's got like fifty of us in the plex and
- 19:40Speaker 1: we're all moving together, and she's just it's like conducting
- 19:44Speaker 1: an orchestra, and this is like unbelievable. And I remember
- 19:48Speaker 1: I just I was just I just absolutely loved watching
- 19:52Speaker 1: what she was doing and being a part of it.
- 19:55Speaker 1: And I started. I mean, my roommates they were like
- 20:00Speaker 1: like they put up us so much. I remember before
- 20:02Speaker 1: we'd go out at night, I'd get everybody in the
- 20:05Speaker 1: ape man and I'd put them in, get everybody in
- 20:08Speaker 1: the common area, and I'd say, We've got to do
- 20:09Speaker 1: Tammily web buf blasters. It was like a twenty minute
- 20:14Speaker 1: video back You're too young to know, but it was
- 20:17Speaker 1: like Denise. It was like Denise Austin days, like I
- 20:21Speaker 1: Denise Austin and I love her and she's she's my
- 20:24Speaker 1: pale and Instagram now but like same kind of thing.
- 20:27Speaker 1: But it was like, I'm like, we got to get
- 20:29Speaker 1: our butts tight and right before we go out.
- 20:31Speaker 4: It's gonna be amazing.
- 20:32Speaker 1: And they were always like Kira, like seriously, we just
- 20:36Speaker 1: we just want to go out. And I'm like, no,
- 20:38Speaker 1: you're gonna feel so good. You're gonna put your jeans
- 20:40Speaker 1: on and like boom, We're like we're gonna go. So
- 20:43Speaker 1: that kind of started my desire to just get people
- 20:47Speaker 1: moving and feeling good. I think not having a sport
- 20:51Speaker 1: to do while I was in college, it was like
- 20:53Speaker 1: this became my outlet. It was like, okay, I may
- 20:56Speaker 1: not have that sense of community within this within sports,
- 21:00Speaker 1: because you know in college, especially Division one is Boston
- 21:03Speaker 1: College is those you know, athletes that are that are competing,
- 21:08Speaker 1: they are in they're so tight knit, right they had
- 21:11Speaker 1: and I would see that and be like this is
- 21:12Speaker 1: so cool, Like oh my gosh, they have this like
- 21:15Speaker 1: sisterhood that's so awesome. I can create this in a
- 21:18Speaker 1: different way. I feel like, let me just do it
- 21:21Speaker 1: amongst my like eight roommates at the time. But I
- 21:25Speaker 1: always in my brain was like, there's got to be
- 21:28Speaker 1: a way that I just love motive, like this kind of.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Motivating people in this way.
- 21:33Speaker 1: There's got to be a way I can take this
- 21:36Speaker 1: and make it like real, you know for sure.
- 21:40Speaker 2: First note here, eight roommates seems like a lot of roommates.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Didn't you have that in college?
- 21:45Speaker 1: No?
- 21:46Speaker 4: I think it's like different in New York.
- 21:48Speaker 1: I think Boston in college. At Boston College, you had
- 21:51Speaker 1: depended on the year you were in, but like you
- 21:54Speaker 1: had eight mans, you had four mans, you had six
- 21:57Speaker 1: man they call them man's, but those were the man
- 21:59Speaker 1: of like you'd have like four bedrooms in a common area,
- 22:03Speaker 1: you know, And that's that's kind.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Of what it was.
- 22:05Speaker 1: And it totally like whether you won the lottery and
- 22:08Speaker 1: you got the eight or you got the six or
- 22:10Speaker 1: you got the four, it was like, it is what
- 22:12Speaker 1: it is, but that's how it works.
- 22:14Speaker 2: The second takeaway from all of that for me is
- 22:16Speaker 2: it's interesting to me that when you were in high
- 22:19Speaker 2: school you thought it would be so cool to get strong,
- 22:22Speaker 2: and usually we see that somewhere, right, like, usually you
- 22:27Speaker 2: would have been exposed to someone else, and maybe it
- 22:29Speaker 2: could have just been by walking into that gym, but
- 22:32Speaker 2: you looked at that as something that would be really
- 22:36Speaker 2: awesome for you. And I think that's a really cool thing,
- 22:39Speaker 2: because not everyone has that type of exposure or would
- 22:44Speaker 2: feel that way walking into a gym. A lot of
- 22:46Speaker 2: people would walk into a gym like that and be like, hmm,
- 22:50Speaker 2: I'm good.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and it's it's funny and I did. This
- 22:54Speaker 1: is where I really do believe, you know, it's been
- 22:57Speaker 1: nurture versus nature. Right. My stick, for example, has never
- 23:02Speaker 1: set foot in the gym ever in her life and
- 23:05Speaker 1: has no desire Like I remember bringing her to the
- 23:09Speaker 1: gym in Boston where I was working at the time,
- 23:11Speaker 1: and she said, I wanted can you just give me
- 23:13Speaker 1: a basic like arm routine. I just want an arm routine.
- 23:16Speaker 1: And I remember being so excited because I was like,
- 23:18Speaker 1: oh my gosh, she's finally I like, she finally.
- 23:20Speaker 4: Wants my guidance.
- 23:21Speaker 1: I look over, I'm getting everything set up.
- 23:23Speaker 4: I look over.
- 23:23Speaker 1: She's literally napping on a bench laying there and I'm like,
- 23:27Speaker 1: are you ready, and she's like, you know what, I'm good,
- 23:31Speaker 1: and like that was it. So it wasn't like we
- 23:34Speaker 1: both grew up in the same household, right, So it
- 23:37Speaker 1: wasn't something that was necessarily.
- 23:39Speaker 4: Now I lot more attention, for sure.
- 23:41Speaker 1: To like my dad's habits. Then I think my sister
- 23:45Speaker 1: really really did and met with my father. That is
- 23:50Speaker 1: where I get my love of the gym, my mother,
- 23:52Speaker 1: My sister and my mother very much alike. My mother's
- 23:55Speaker 1: never seen me inside of a gym, God bless her.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Like she does her walk every day and does what
- 23:59Speaker 1: I you know, the the little bits I've given her,
- 24:01Speaker 1: but it's always She's always made it very clear, I
- 24:03Speaker 1: am not doing this for vanity. I'm doing it for osteoporosis.
- 24:06Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, that's you know what that's and that's
- 24:09Speaker 1: her thing, and that's great. My dad, he's eighty two now.
- 24:13Speaker 1: I mean before pre COVID, he'd be in the gym
- 24:16Speaker 1: three hours a day, two hours a day. You know,
- 24:18Speaker 1: a lot of it was him just cleaning off the
- 24:19Speaker 1: machines because.
- 24:20Speaker 4: He's meticulous, but like it was a lot of working
- 24:23Speaker 4: out too. My whole life.
- 24:24Speaker 1: He'd come home from work, like come in the door
- 24:27Speaker 1: and I'd watch him and he'd give us a wave,
- 24:30Speaker 1: and then he'd put his running gear on and he'd
- 24:33Speaker 1: be back out the door running within ten minutes of
- 24:36Speaker 1: getting home. I've never been one able to sit still.
- 24:39Speaker 1: It's just what's in me. So walking in that gym
- 24:41Speaker 1: and seeing feeling this energy, Like I remember walking in
- 24:45Speaker 1: and literally being like I literally just found my people,
- 24:49Speaker 1: like just kind of looking around and you know, mind
- 24:53Speaker 1: you at that point, that was nineteen I'd save my
- 24:57Speaker 1: first time stepping in a gym like that was nineteen
- 24:59Speaker 1: eight nine, nineteen ninety. There weren't a lot of women
- 25:03Speaker 1: in there, hardly any. I'd say two or three, two
- 25:08Speaker 1: or three, and they were just on the stare master,
- 25:11Speaker 1: like they weren't in the weight room. They were in
- 25:13Speaker 1: the staremaster. And I'll tell you, Emily, like I just
- 25:17Speaker 1: and again, I've just had it in me, like I
- 25:19Speaker 1: didn't even think about like, oh this is intimidating. There's
- 25:21Speaker 1: a bunch of guys around, I don't know if I
- 25:23Speaker 1: want to do. I would just walk up to it
- 25:24Speaker 1: and say how do I use this? Like this lap
- 25:28Speaker 1: pull down machine?
- 25:29Speaker 4: Like what is this?
- 25:29Speaker 1: And why do I want to you know, how do
- 25:31Speaker 1: I use it? I just barged right in and was like,
- 25:34Speaker 1: just teach me how.
- 25:35Speaker 4: Do I do it?
- 25:35Speaker 3: Do you ever have a negative experience asking for help?
- 25:38Speaker 1: Not? That sticks out in my head, so I can't
- 25:41Speaker 1: imagine there was ever. Yeah, I can't imagine there. I
- 25:44Speaker 1: would have remembered that, But no, I think because I
- 25:47Speaker 1: was so It might have been because I was small
- 25:50Speaker 1: and I was like, you know, this little blond thing.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Right away, I was like, I'd be like, sure, she's
- 25:55Speaker 1: you know, I'll help her out, Like she looks like
- 25:57Speaker 1: she could use some muscles, like she had some strength.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Let me help this girl up. I just had no
- 26:04Speaker 1: you know, my parents always taught me, if you want something,
- 26:06Speaker 1: you asked for it, and if you don't ask for it,
- 26:09Speaker 1: you know, if you don't ask, you're never going to
- 26:10Speaker 1: know the answer, right, So, and that kind of holds
- 26:13Speaker 1: true throughout life. It's like, if you want something, you
- 26:16Speaker 1: simply ask for it. The only the worst that can
- 26:18Speaker 1: happen is someone says no, and then you find a
- 26:20Speaker 1: way to make it happen anyway, you know, like you
- 26:23Speaker 1: find your way around and that's it. It's like, never
- 26:26Speaker 1: be afraid to ask like it's I think that's a
- 26:28Speaker 1: really important lesson is that I've never been afraid.
- 26:31Speaker 4: I just haven't.
- 26:32Speaker 1: It's like so someone says no, ideally, you move on,
- 26:35Speaker 1: you know, learn from it another way. You just find
- 26:39Speaker 1: another route.
- 26:39Speaker 4: That's it.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Well, you weren't afraid to ask your girlfriends to do
- 26:43Speaker 2: butt workouts with you before you went out in college?
- 26:47Speaker 2: When does the we should do a butt workout situation
- 26:51Speaker 2: turn into maybe I should actually do something with this
- 26:54Speaker 2: whole I love to do the fitness.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I think. I think what happened was.
- 27:02Speaker 1: I my parents, you know, they paid for Boston College,
- 27:06Speaker 1: and they were very by the book, like we paid
- 27:08Speaker 1: for your education, we are not paying for an extra
- 27:11Speaker 1: gym membership. And I felt like I needed to see
- 27:16Speaker 1: what else was out there. Like here I had Boston College,
- 27:18Speaker 1: it was great. I needed to get off campus and see,
- 27:22Speaker 1: like what other gyms were out there besides what I
- 27:25Speaker 1: was just experiencing. So I remember getting on the tee
- 27:28Speaker 1: and going down. I'd heard of this place called the
- 27:30Speaker 1: Squash Club, and I know it sounds really weird, like
- 27:32Speaker 1: the squash club is just for squash, but I.
- 27:35Speaker 4: Can't tell you this place was.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Anybody who became anybody in fitness that you may not
- 27:44Speaker 1: know or have heard of now because they didn't jump
- 27:47Speaker 1: on the social media bandwagon, right, They actually gave a
- 27:51Speaker 1: heard to that, which is which was quite frankly a mistake, right,
- 27:53Speaker 1: because they are incredibly talented. They all started at this
- 27:58Speaker 1: one place, Squash Club, Alston, Massachusetts, and it was I
- 28:02Speaker 1: have never seen classes back then, aerobics like step, multi impact,
- 28:08Speaker 1: all that like this in my life and I don't
- 28:12Speaker 1: think I ever will again. It was I'm talking to
- 28:15Speaker 1: one hundred people in a class. They're doing it in
- 28:17Speaker 1: the hallway. If they can't fit in the gym, Yeah,
- 28:19Speaker 1: like you can't. I can't express the energy that you felt.
- 28:23Speaker 1: So I took myself down to this gym and I
- 28:25Speaker 1: was like, I got to check this place out. I
- 28:27Speaker 1: walked in and again I was like, my people, like
- 28:30Speaker 1: what is this place?
- 28:31Speaker 4: Like this is insane.
- 28:32Speaker 1: And there was a physical therapy place attached to it.
- 28:34Speaker 4: It was before it's time.
- 28:35Speaker 1: It was squash, physical therapy, aerobics, strength training, it was everything.
- 28:40Speaker 1: It was like a big It was the first like
- 28:41Speaker 1: big box gym in Boston ever, and I just knew,
- 28:48Speaker 1: like you know, you know, and in your brain. You
- 28:50Speaker 1: walk in a place in your or you need a person,
- 28:53Speaker 1: right and you say, like there's an instant connection that's
- 28:57Speaker 1: kind of like the love up there I had with gyms. Right,
- 29:00Speaker 1: I'd walk in and just be like, oh, I just
- 29:01Speaker 1: want to be around this energy more.
- 29:03Speaker 4: I just want to be around this energy more. Everybody's
- 29:05Speaker 4: trying to.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Do the right thing, you know, hopefully for their body
- 29:08Speaker 1: on the you know, from the outside looking in, you know,
- 29:12Speaker 1: there's a common theme. There's a community. People were talking
- 29:14Speaker 1: to each other, they were you know, having a blast,
- 29:18Speaker 1: like moving in this studio together. So I took a
- 29:21Speaker 1: job at the front desk, and I was like, I'll
- 29:24Speaker 1: work the front desk. It got me free membership. I'm
- 29:26Speaker 1: just gonna soak everything in while I'm here. And you know,
- 29:31Speaker 1: I only worked like you know, my parents were like,
- 29:33Speaker 1: your your job is college, Like this is not what
- 29:36Speaker 1: are you doing? Like this is not okay? Like only
- 29:40Speaker 1: one day week. So I worked enough just to get
- 29:42Speaker 1: the membership. But what I did every second I could
- 29:45Speaker 1: get when someone wasn't there to check in my look.
- 29:47Speaker 1: I mean, if I could tell you the out you know,
- 29:49Speaker 1: how this entire gym was like set up, I could
- 29:51Speaker 1: like peek through and watch the entire room like this
- 29:55Speaker 1: what was going on a string change gym. I sat
- 29:57Speaker 1: there with a notepad and was just like writing down
- 30:01Speaker 1: like how people were putting workouts together. I'd watch one
- 30:05Speaker 1: trainer and I'd follow, like you know, there's certain trainers
- 30:08Speaker 1: that I would watch and other ones that I just
- 30:10Speaker 1: knew weren't my thing, Like I didn't, you know, it
- 30:12Speaker 1: was like okay, that's I don't really love what they're
- 30:14Speaker 1: doing with that. But like I'd watch and I write
- 30:16Speaker 1: things down, and then I'd go into the physical therapy
- 30:20Speaker 1: clinic anytime I had a break and literally follow this
- 30:25Speaker 1: one man around.
- 30:26Speaker 4: His name was Tim.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Brewster, who was the most incredible physical therapist slash strength
- 30:35Speaker 1: and conditioning coach slash trainer. The first person I'd ever
- 30:38Speaker 1: seen and to this day, like I still believe it
- 30:41Speaker 1: who was able to merge the two physical. I mean,
- 30:45Speaker 1: I shouldn't say that they were great physical therapists that
- 30:47Speaker 1: are also trainers. He had a way of not being
- 30:52Speaker 1: as pet based but taking his knowledge and really create
- 30:57Speaker 1: you know what I mean, you know how sometimes you
- 30:59Speaker 1: get you you physical therapist and again they're wonderful physical therapists,
- 31:03Speaker 1: but they keep creating a program for someone that's just
- 31:06Speaker 1: fitness based. It's a little different because their brain works
- 31:10Speaker 1: in one, you know, a certain direction. He I would
- 31:13Speaker 1: watch him and he would train people on the floor
- 31:16Speaker 1: and then you'd go back in the pet clinic. And
- 31:18Speaker 1: I remember asking him one day, I'm like, can I
- 31:20Speaker 1: just follow you around a little bit? And can you
- 31:22Speaker 1: like I won't say here I am again asking right,
- 31:25Speaker 1: I'm like, I won't like bother you, but I would.
- 31:29Speaker 4: Like to just take some notes. He was amazing.
- 31:32Speaker 1: He was like, you can a like one d percent
- 31:35Speaker 1: follow me around like like a dog, like you know,
- 31:38Speaker 1: like anything you want, and ask me questions after.
- 31:41Speaker 4: And that's what I did.
- 31:42Speaker 1: I like spent any time that was like downtime from
- 31:45Speaker 1: the front desk in that pet clinic, watching him on
- 31:48Speaker 1: the floor and learning everything I could and asking him
- 31:53Speaker 1: like what's the first thing I should do?
- 31:55Speaker 4: You know?
- 31:55Speaker 1: In mind you remember this was nineteen ninety four, so
- 31:58Speaker 1: I was a junior going into my junior year at
- 32:01Speaker 1: Boston College. In the summers, friends were getting internships. I
- 32:07Speaker 1: worked full time with that Jim and I remember my parents,
- 32:11Speaker 1: you have to back then fitness wasn't a profession, right,
- 32:16Speaker 1: It was like a fun thing people did on the side.
- 32:19Speaker 1: It wasn't necessarily it was I mean, I've seen it all.
- 32:23Speaker 1: I've been in this business for a quarter of a century.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Now when you think about it, it's been twenty five
- 32:27Speaker 1: years I've been doing this, so I've seen how the
- 32:29Speaker 1: industry has evolved. And back then it was like, oh,
- 32:32Speaker 1: that's a fun thing to do. It wasn't like you
- 32:35Speaker 1: can make a living doing this, right, So I remember
- 32:39Speaker 1: one of the heart one of the hardest lessons. It
- 32:42Speaker 1: took years for me to get across to my parents
- 32:45Speaker 1: that this was actually going to be my profession. Right.
- 32:48Speaker 1: So everybody's getting internships and my parents are like, h
- 32:53Speaker 1: what are you gonna do when you graduate? Like what
- 32:55Speaker 1: are you gonna do? Like what are you working towards
- 32:57Speaker 1: this summer that?
- 32:58Speaker 4: And they were they're not they were not people to
- 33:01Speaker 4: put pressure on me at all, but like any parents,
- 33:03Speaker 4: they're like.
- 33:05Speaker 1: We're sent you here at Boston College, like your degree,
- 33:08Speaker 1: Like you're getting a degree, what is this really helping that?
- 33:12Speaker 4: Like, what's gonna what.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Were you studying at the time?
- 33:15Speaker 1: So I changed my ma I changed my major three
- 33:19Speaker 1: times in college.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Okay, I started.
- 33:23Speaker 1: In arts and sciences, and I thought I was going
- 33:25Speaker 1: to a pre med thought I was going to go
- 33:27Speaker 1: like to medical school, like that was what I wanted
- 33:30Speaker 1: to do. And then you know, at the time, to me,
- 33:33Speaker 1: that road was so daunting. It was like I was like, Oh,
- 33:37Speaker 1: that's a lot, that's a lot of years down the
- 33:41Speaker 1: road just wasn't going to work for me.
- 33:43Speaker 4: I was like nope, So I started.
- 33:44Speaker 1: I had a lot a lot in the sciences obviously,
- 33:47Speaker 1: like I had a lot of credits in that.
- 33:51Speaker 4: Somehow in my brain was like, let's try political science.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Exactly. So started taking police. I was like, yeah, this
- 34:01Speaker 1: is interesting.
- 34:02Speaker 4: What the heck am I going to do with this?
- 34:04Speaker 1: Then met with an advisor who was like, Kira, if
- 34:07Speaker 1: you don't figure this out, like you're.
- 34:09Speaker 4: Not going to graduate on time.
- 34:10Speaker 1: You've got all these science credits and now you've got
- 34:13Speaker 1: Polly SI, like you're never going to be able to
- 34:15Speaker 1: get all that you need. I think I even switched
- 34:17Speaker 1: to economics at one point from Polly sci like one semester.
- 34:20Speaker 1: I was like, let me do this, and that's when
- 34:22Speaker 1: my advisor was literally like like you need to like
- 34:26Speaker 1: figure out like what is it that you want to do.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Quite frankly, Bostin College did not have an exercise physiology program.
- 34:32Speaker 4: I knew in my brain what I wanted.
- 34:34Speaker 1: To do, but I was like, it's not here for me,
- 34:36Speaker 1: but I freaking love it here, Like I don't want
- 34:39Speaker 1: to transfer, but like, how am I going to make
- 34:42Speaker 1: this work with what I really want to do. They
- 34:45Speaker 1: had a minor that was health science and that became
- 34:48Speaker 1: my minor, but my major ended up psychology And I
- 34:53Speaker 1: can't tell you how obviously that was is and was
- 34:59Speaker 1: super are you super useful? Like I'm so happy that's
- 35:03Speaker 1: what my degree was in, because you know, I almost
- 35:07Speaker 1: feel like as a trainer, it's like movement therapy, right,
- 35:12Speaker 1: And a lot of what I do is a lot of.
- 35:15Speaker 4: Listening and a lot and I love that. I love listening.
- 35:18Speaker 1: I love helping people figure out things they're going on
- 35:21Speaker 1: in their life. But it's not the pressure of like
- 35:23Speaker 1: you're sitting in a chair someone's taking notes on you,
- 35:26Speaker 1: or like a therapy session. It's a different kind of
- 35:28Speaker 1: therapy and using what I learned a lot of his
- 35:33Speaker 1: common sense in psychology, but a lot of it was
- 35:35Speaker 1: like really using what I learned to let them. People
- 35:40Speaker 1: open up more through movement when you're moving. Think about it,
- 35:43Speaker 1: when you're running or you're walking, and all of a sudden,
- 35:47Speaker 1: if you're one of those people where you can organize
- 35:49Speaker 1: your thoughts or this is where like you almost wish
- 35:51Speaker 1: you had a notepad in your hand when you were
- 35:53Speaker 1: running because you're like, oh, gosh, I'm coming up with
- 35:56Speaker 1: such great stuff.
- 35:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 35:58Speaker 1: That happens with the client, and when you're training them properly,
- 36:02Speaker 1: right when you're really listening and asking the right questions,
- 36:06Speaker 1: they figure out so much more than just what's going
- 36:09Speaker 1: on with their body during that time of your Your
- 36:13Speaker 1: goal as a trainer is to make them feel better
- 36:16Speaker 1: in body and mind right, not just not just the body. Right,
- 36:20Speaker 1: It's not about just fixing or working with the body.
- 36:23Speaker 1: It's getting into what's going on up here because that
- 36:26Speaker 1: affects it all.

- 39:06Speaker 2: you go after your first fitness certification?
- 39:11Speaker 1: My uh, going into my senior year at Boston College.
- 39:16Speaker 1: So the summer of my junior year. I remember going
- 39:20Speaker 1: to Tim Brewster and I keep referring to him in
- 39:23Speaker 1: the in the past tense because he passed away five
- 39:25Speaker 1: years ago. He was my mentor at the age of
- 39:30Speaker 1: forty nine. And what happened happened. He had and this
- 39:35Speaker 1: is a tribute to like, this is a great example
- 39:37Speaker 1: of like you can look really healthy on the outside,
- 39:40Speaker 1: but you don't know necessarily what's internally going on with someone.
- 39:43Speaker 1: But he had a massive heart attack at the age
- 39:46Speaker 1: of forty nine, and they call it the widow Maker
- 39:49Speaker 1: because there's nothing you can do. And he was married
- 39:53Speaker 1: with a two year old and a four year old.
- 39:57Speaker 1: So and when I tell you this man with the
- 40:01Speaker 1: healthy like like incredible soccer player, unbelievable physique, crazy energy,
- 40:08Speaker 1: but genetically right, he was suffering, right, there was that
- 40:13Speaker 1: there was an issue there.
- 40:14Speaker 3: So I'm so sorry to hear about that.
- 40:17Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I mean it was listen, it's but it
- 40:19Speaker 1: really I mean, I know we're going off topic here,
- 40:22Speaker 1: but it was a great reminder to me when it
- 40:25Speaker 1: happened of like just a shock obviously, but also like
- 40:29Speaker 1: a like man freaking enjoy every moment, but b like
- 40:34Speaker 1: you just it's it's not just about like the It
- 40:39Speaker 1: made me realize that what I love too about training
- 40:42Speaker 1: and movement, it's not it's not what. It's not how
- 40:47Speaker 1: you end up feeling or looking, it's I love the act.
- 40:50Speaker 4: Right.
- 40:51Speaker 1: So it really brought me back to like, I am
- 40:54Speaker 1: really doing what I love because I love the act
- 40:56Speaker 1: of all of it. It's not the end results, it's
- 41:00Speaker 1: it's the whole process, right. So it's like the joy,
- 41:04Speaker 1: the joy is in the journey, not the destination, right
- 41:06Speaker 1: that it's truly like and it made me, you know,
- 41:10Speaker 1: because experiences like that can make you really rethink, right,
- 41:14Speaker 1: and it did make me realize like, wow, I really
- 41:16Speaker 1: am enjoying the journey, like it's.
- 41:18Speaker 4: Not I am. I am you know, embracing that.
- 41:22Speaker 1: So that was going into my senior year and I
- 41:24Speaker 1: remember asking him, like, what's the certification I should get
- 41:27Speaker 1: and he said start with NASAM. And I still tell
- 41:30Speaker 1: people to this day when when you know, talking to
- 41:33Speaker 1: trainers about what's the first certification I would get? You know,
- 41:37Speaker 1: that was mine and so I'd say like that and
- 41:39Speaker 1: it's it's you know, it's a fantastic search. So that
- 41:42Speaker 1: was the first one. And I remember, you know, I
- 41:46Speaker 1: was using my roommates as guinea pigs, like just you know, trying,
- 41:52Speaker 1: trying everything. But it really again was tim when I
- 41:55Speaker 1: graduated from college and again my parents going where's your
- 42:02Speaker 1: nine to five? And I'm saying, I'm going to be
- 42:05Speaker 1: a trainer, like this is what I'm going to do
- 42:07Speaker 1: full time, And I remember them saying, like, we're not
- 42:11Speaker 1: giving you any money. So if you can't make a
- 42:14Speaker 1: living doing this, that's it. Like you need to figure
- 42:19Speaker 1: it out, like either you get as they would tell me,
- 42:21Speaker 1: a real job, or figure it out. And back then, man,
- 42:26Speaker 1: you couldn't make a lot of money as a trainer,
- 42:28Speaker 1: like you were not making you were not making you know,
- 42:33Speaker 1: I always say it's uh, you've got to earn your stripes.
- 42:37Speaker 1: You know. It was me at that time training anywhere
- 42:40Speaker 1: between eight and twelve people a day and then not
- 42:43Speaker 1: being able to pay my rent off of that, so
- 42:46Speaker 1: also bartending three nights a week, but also like bartending
- 42:51Speaker 1: bar's clothes it you know, it's early in Boston, thank god,
- 42:55Speaker 1: but going directly to the gym and falling asleep on
- 42:59Speaker 1: a massage in the gym because I had the keys
- 43:01Speaker 1: because I would open and sleeping for three hours and
- 43:05Speaker 1: just like jumping in the shower there before my first client.
- 43:08Speaker 1: But it's like I'm like I'm not giving up, Like
- 43:10Speaker 1: I know, this is what I wanted to do. But
- 43:14Speaker 1: it was a lot of years of just you know,
- 43:17Speaker 1: really grinding. And I'm such a firm believer and I'm
- 43:22Speaker 1: always telling trainers that you know, are starting out in
- 43:25Speaker 1: the business. I know it's really hard to hear because
- 43:28Speaker 1: you see so much of like especially with social media,
- 43:33Speaker 1: you know, like how do I, how am I going
- 43:35Speaker 1: to do? Why am I not doing this? How do
- 43:37Speaker 1: I get to this?
- 43:38Speaker 4: What do I?
- 43:38Speaker 1: And it's like you really, there's no excuse, there's no
- 43:42Speaker 1: shortcut for hard work. Like you the only way to
- 43:46Speaker 1: keep your flame burning is to is to progress slowly. Right.
- 43:51Speaker 1: You can't. You can't light up. You're going to burn
- 43:54Speaker 1: out as fast as you light up, right, It's a
- 43:56Speaker 1: slow burn. And it's and you learn every step of
- 44:01Speaker 1: the way. And it's like if you the amount of work,
- 44:04Speaker 1: like you know, for people that don't know and they
- 44:07Speaker 1: just see me on Instagram or whatever and they think, well,
- 44:09Speaker 1: how did this girl get this?
- 44:10Speaker 4: It's like twenty five years, twenty five years.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Of like earning my stripes, you know, and in the
- 44:19Speaker 1: slow progression, and it's like having patience to like not
- 44:24Speaker 1: not give up because you see what someone else is
- 44:27Speaker 1: doing or what they're getting. And I will say that
- 44:31Speaker 1: I'm grateful.
- 44:34Speaker 4: Man.
- 44:34Speaker 1: It's like when I look at young kids today and
- 44:36Speaker 1: like young kids day, but when I look at kids, say,
- 44:39Speaker 1: who are growing up? Like even my nieces and my nephew,
- 44:41Speaker 1: and I see, you know, they live in Bosa, Montana,
- 44:43Speaker 1: so they actually don't even have phones. But I see
- 44:45Speaker 1: the I see kids their age on a phone at
- 44:49Speaker 1: the age of twelve, and I'm like, how awful? Right, Like,
- 44:53Speaker 1: I'm so grateful that I grew up in fitness in
- 44:55Speaker 1: a time where I didn't know what the person in
- 44:58Speaker 1: the gym next door was doing. I didn't know what
- 45:01Speaker 1: the person next to me was doing on their off time,
- 45:04Speaker 1: Like it wasn't there, so I could focus one hundred
- 45:07Speaker 1: percent on my path, right and being concerned about me
- 45:11Speaker 1: being I always say like the hardest worker in the room,
- 45:17Speaker 1: but I've kind of shifted that to like over the
- 45:22Speaker 1: years now, not being being the hardest work in the
- 45:25Speaker 1: room is one thing, but being the smartest worker, not
- 45:29Speaker 1: in terms of intelligence, but in terms of using your
- 45:32Speaker 1: time wisely, how are you budgeting your time? And it
- 45:37Speaker 1: doesn't mean doing more and more and more and more.
- 45:40Speaker 1: It means like, what is the best way right to
- 45:43Speaker 1: end with the result that I want to see using
- 45:46Speaker 1: my time in the wisest manner.
- 45:49Speaker 2: And now that you do have access to social media,
- 45:54Speaker 2: you do have an idea of maybe what the trainer
- 45:58Speaker 2: is doing next door. How have you seen that maybe
- 46:03Speaker 2: impact how you're working versus before when you were just
- 46:08Speaker 2: getting started and you were falling asleep on the massage
- 46:11Speaker 2: table and getting up every day and doing it again.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Social media is such a I mean, we could talk
- 46:15Speaker 1: about social media for five hours. I am so grateful
- 46:19Speaker 1: for it, Like I would be lying if I said
- 46:20Speaker 1: I didn't love industry.
- 46:21Speaker 4: I love it.
- 46:22Speaker 1: I really love it, and I love it for what
- 46:24Speaker 1: I use it for. I love it for the fact
- 46:27Speaker 1: that I'm able to offer people free information, right to
- 46:32Speaker 1: educate people, Like my ultimate goal is to make people
- 46:35Speaker 1: feel better, be healthier, and inspire them through movement. Right,
- 46:40Speaker 1: So what I do on my page is an extension
- 46:44Speaker 1: of my business. It's a lens into my business, right,
- 46:47Speaker 1: so where I'm giving you something for free and then
- 46:50Speaker 1: if you want more right. Obviously there's my app, there's
- 46:55Speaker 1: you know you have that, but I kind of keep
- 46:59Speaker 1: you know, I don't say I shouldn't say blinders on.
- 47:01Speaker 4: I don't keep blinds on.
- 47:02Speaker 1: You need to be aware of what other people are doing,
- 47:04Speaker 1: and I think that's super helpful if you can compartmentalize
- 47:09Speaker 1: it where it's like you see what they're doing, but
- 47:14Speaker 1: you don't compare what you're doing to them, Like what
- 47:17Speaker 1: you're doing in the lane you're in is your lane,
- 47:20Speaker 1: and it doesn't mean what they're doing is wrong. It does,
- 47:24Speaker 1: but it doesn't mean change what you're doing. It may
- 47:27Speaker 1: help you evolve, Right, So you might see something or
- 47:31Speaker 1: someone another trainer's doing or whatever and go.
- 47:33Speaker 4: Oh, that's oh is that what?
- 47:36Speaker 1: Like is that how I should be using this form
- 47:39Speaker 1: of social media or like doing that or even you know, listen,
- 47:43Speaker 1: it's a great looking at other trainers As a trainer,
- 47:47Speaker 1: it's a great way to like help you get creative, right,
- 47:50Speaker 1: use it for what it is. When you see someone
- 47:52Speaker 1: doing like an amazing move, it's like, oh, heck, yes,
- 47:57Speaker 1: like they just taught me something new and they didn't
- 47:59Speaker 1: realize it. Like that's what I hope people get from
- 48:01Speaker 1: my peach is that they go, oh wow, like this
- 48:05Speaker 1: is awesome. I just learned something new today. And I
- 48:10Speaker 1: think it's impossible not to compare. Like there's a difference
- 48:16Speaker 1: between comparing yourself and competing, comparing yourself to others and
- 48:21Speaker 1: competing with others. I don't believe it's a competition. I
- 48:26Speaker 1: truly believe there is room for everyone in this industry
- 48:30Speaker 1: and not every trainer or for fitness professional is going
- 48:33Speaker 1: to resonate with every person. And that's a beautiful thing.
- 48:37Speaker 1: It's like the way I train and what I put out,
- 48:41Speaker 1: it's not going to work for everybody. It's not people aren't.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Not everybody gonna like it, and like you have to
- 48:45Speaker 1: be okay with that being the case, and being like
- 48:49Speaker 1: that's great if you don't like I'm not, and also
- 48:51Speaker 1: accepting like what you're good at and what you're not,
- 48:53Speaker 1: Like I am not a kettlebell like that.
- 48:55Speaker 4: I don't, you know, I may have.
- 48:56Speaker 1: My I have one kettlebell sert. I don't pick up cattle,
- 49:00Speaker 1: but it's just not my thing. It's not it doesn't
- 49:02Speaker 1: resonate with me. It never filled my heart. So I
- 49:05Speaker 1: will send you to someone amazing who does do it.
- 49:07Speaker 1: And it's like, don't don't be afraid to do that,
- 49:10Speaker 1: you know what I mean, don't be afraid to share
- 49:11Speaker 1: the wealth with someone else. It's like, well, you know,
- 49:14Speaker 1: like even when it comes to all aspects of wellness,
- 49:17Speaker 1: I am not a nutritionist, I'm not a registered dietitian.
- 49:21Speaker 1: I'm going to send you to someone awesome because they
- 49:23Speaker 1: have the schooling and they have the education, and they're
- 49:26Speaker 1: going to they will help you in ways I could
- 49:28Speaker 1: never help you, right, so, I think, and nothing makes
- 49:32Speaker 1: you feel better right in the end, you're helping people,
- 49:35Speaker 1: regardless whether it's your program or someone else's.
- 49:37Speaker 2: It's that saying. It's that like comparison is the thief
- 49:40Speaker 2: of joy. Like when you're not willing to stay in
- 49:42Speaker 2: your own lane and you're starting to freak out, that's
- 49:45Speaker 2: when you're like completely losing focus of whatever it is
- 49:49Speaker 2: is your mission is your priority.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Because you can't do everything right. You can't, Like I
- 49:55Speaker 1: don't think there's anybody that can would.
- 49:58Speaker 4: Fight me on that.
- 49:59Speaker 1: It's like you absolutely cannot do everything. You have to
- 50:03Speaker 1: learn your strength and your weaknesses. Not be afraid of that. Like,
- 50:06Speaker 1: I know what I'm good at, I know what I'm
- 50:07Speaker 1: not doesn't mean that you shouldn't work on your weaknesses,
- 50:11Speaker 1: but also like you can't relay that information to someone
- 50:17Speaker 1: until Like it's it's when I always say, like I
- 50:20Speaker 1: don't ever put a move out or and exercise out
- 50:22Speaker 1: that I don't do myself.
- 50:23Speaker 4: That's just how I work.
- 50:24Speaker 1: Like if I can't experience it and I can't do
- 50:27Speaker 1: it myself, how am I going to coach you through it?
- 50:30Speaker 2: Like?
- 50:30Speaker 1: How am I going to I can't give you the
- 50:32Speaker 1: proper cues. So if someone comes to me and they say,
- 50:34Speaker 1: can you teach me I own powerlifting.
- 50:36Speaker 4: Like that, I want to be. I want to be
- 50:38Speaker 4: like that.
- 50:38Speaker 1: I want to be able to do my max you know,
- 50:43Speaker 1: like that's a different situation. We can I'll do our
- 50:45Speaker 1: max bench or whatever it is. But like, I am
- 50:47Speaker 1: not a powerlifter, so I'm going to send you to
- 50:48Speaker 1: a coach who is fantastic at coaching powerlifting. It's like,
- 50:52Speaker 1: I think what's happening is people are getting really confused
- 50:57Speaker 1: by everything they see out there, even as training. It's like, no,
- 51:00Speaker 1: I should be doing this now, No I should be. Oh,
- 51:03Speaker 1: maybe I should be. Maybe I should come up with
- 51:05Speaker 1: a dance fitness routine.
- 51:07Speaker 4: Maybe I should do.
- 51:08Speaker 1: And it's like, no, no, no, I mean what I've
- 51:10Speaker 1: always been consistent with is my method is my method.
- 51:13Speaker 1: It evolves, but I'm not looking at what's like. I'm
- 51:18Speaker 1: not doing what's popular. I'm doing what's right. And if
- 51:21Speaker 1: the two intersect, If the two intersect, awesome party time.
- 51:26Speaker 1: If they don't like, stay with it because you're going
- 51:30Speaker 1: to find your people no matter what, who support what
- 51:32Speaker 1: you do and embrace what you do.
- 51:35Speaker 2: When you're coaching between eight and twelve clients a day,
- 51:38Speaker 2: how do you not burn out?
- 51:40Speaker 4: Well? I did.
- 51:41Speaker 1: I mean that's the thing that not anymore.
- 51:43Speaker 4: You will like this.
- 51:45Speaker 1: This is where the growth has happened in this industry
- 51:47Speaker 1: or within me? Is that realizing that I used to
- 51:51Speaker 1: be so proud that I was training between eight and
- 51:54Speaker 1: two It's like, huh, I trained twelve people today? How
- 51:57Speaker 1: is it possible to give twelve humans twelve hours the
- 52:01Speaker 1: kind of attention they need and deserve. And I think
- 52:04Speaker 1: back to some of my this was back when you know,
- 52:06Speaker 1: at this point I was training at now the Squash
- 52:10Speaker 1: Club then became Boston Sports Club, which at that time
- 52:13Speaker 1: Town Sports International, that was the only gym in Boston.
- 52:16Speaker 1: There was no Sports Club Ala, there was no Equinox,
- 52:19Speaker 1: which I did end up working at, you know as
- 52:21Speaker 1: well in Boston, but at the time, that was it.
- 52:23Speaker 1: And I think back to some of the clients I
- 52:24Speaker 1: trained there, and oh my gosh, you think that, like
- 52:26Speaker 1: it's like I want to get my hands on them again,
- 52:28Speaker 1: you know, because like not only the growth in my program,
- 52:32Speaker 1: but also the fact that that last person of the
- 52:34Speaker 1: day as a trainer. I remember there were times where
- 52:37Speaker 1: I would look at them and be like, what do
- 52:38Speaker 1: you want to do?
- 52:40Speaker 4: What do you want to do today?
- 52:41Speaker 1: It's not that my client's job to tell, like they're
- 52:44Speaker 1: looking to be like what do I want?
- 52:46Speaker 4: What do you what do you mean? What I mean?
- 52:47Speaker 1: You can't at twelve out You can't at twelve people
- 52:51Speaker 1: a day give give what you need to give. So
- 52:54Speaker 1: now I think, you know what happened for me is
- 52:58Speaker 1: and I also, you know, I was proud of the
- 53:03Speaker 1: fact that for five years straight, Poor Town Sports International
- 53:07Speaker 1: out of it was like eight hundred trainers in the
- 53:09Speaker 1: whole company, you know, because there's like New York, Boston, Washington.
- 53:12Speaker 1: I was a number one trainer in the entire company
- 53:15Speaker 1: for like five years, and it wasn't going to engage
- 53:18Speaker 1: that how many sessions you do? So me being like numbers,
- 53:22Speaker 1: being like twelve a day. I was like, I don't
- 53:27Speaker 1: competing with myself, not And it's always like about me.
- 53:30Speaker 1: It wasn't about like I never asked who was the
- 53:32Speaker 1: second person, but I was always like how many Like
- 53:35Speaker 1: I'm still there, right, I'm still I'm still doing the
- 53:38Speaker 1: most sessions, right, and like, hello, they were making so
- 53:41Speaker 1: much money off me, It's like it wasn't my own business.
- 53:46Speaker 1: Which again, like you, I totally encourage everybody as a
- 53:49Speaker 1: train of like go to work for a big box gym,
- 53:51Speaker 1: to start out and get your education and learn those ropes,
- 53:54Speaker 1: like it's so invaluable what you learn, like working in
- 53:58Speaker 1: a in a in a situation like that. But also
- 54:01Speaker 1: be smart enough to you know, and this is maybe
- 54:04Speaker 1: taboo to say, but be smart enough to walk away
- 54:07Speaker 1: from it to when you suddenly when you've got what
- 54:10Speaker 1: you need and you understand what you're doing and you
- 54:12Speaker 1: feel like give the experience and you're ready to to
- 54:16Speaker 1: spread your wings. Don't be afraid to spread your wings
- 54:19Speaker 1: because you know you are really an independent trainer versus
- 54:23Speaker 1: working for a big box it's safe working for that company,
- 54:26Speaker 1: right because you get your benef and some people have
- 54:28Speaker 1: to like you are freed. You're freed to like go
- 54:32Speaker 1: off on your own and and have to you know,
- 54:35Speaker 1: pay for your insurance and all that comes along with that.
- 54:37Speaker 1: But you're also never going to grow beyond a certain level.
- 54:41Speaker 4: You know.
- 54:41Speaker 1: It's like how many years, like five years top trainer,
- 54:44Speaker 1: Like what did that do? Like what what did that
- 54:47Speaker 1: really do? Besides fatigue me never to the point where
- 54:51Speaker 1: I wanted to jump ship on the industry, but it
- 54:54Speaker 1: but it made me realize like there's got to be
- 54:56Speaker 1: another way, Like there's I was getting I was too
- 54:58Speaker 1: comfortable doing that, yes, but at the same time exhausted
- 55:02Speaker 1: doing it, and it was like, well, why am I
- 55:04Speaker 1: Why am I giving sixty percent or seventy percent of
- 55:07Speaker 1: every session to this gym? Like it doesn't make any sense, right,
- 55:11Speaker 1: So that caused me to start even in Boston, and
- 55:15Speaker 1: you know, doing in home training group fitness was frightening
- 55:20Speaker 1: to me as a trainer because I was like, oh,
- 55:22Speaker 1: there's how many people that are going to be in
- 55:24Speaker 1: this room, Like there's no way I can control how
- 55:30Speaker 1: the form of this. At that point, there was big
- 55:33Speaker 1: sixty people. I used to teach just sixty people and
- 55:38Speaker 1: I freaking loved it. But man, it took me like
- 55:40Speaker 1: a year or so to be able to let go
- 55:43Speaker 1: like the fact that someone's foot might be slightly in
- 55:46Speaker 1: birded or their knee might be adducting just a little bit.
- 55:49Speaker 1: It's like you have to, like, as long as they're
- 55:51Speaker 1: not going to really hurt themselves some of those little things,
- 55:55Speaker 1: you have to like let it go and just briefe
- 55:57Speaker 1: and be like they're going to be okay, Like you.
- 56:00Speaker 4: Can only do what you can do, right.
- 56:02Speaker 3: They're gonna be okay. They're gonna be okay.
- 56:04Speaker 1: They're gonna be okay, Like as long as they're not
- 56:06Speaker 1: gonna you know, blowing the out or whatever. Like it
- 56:10Speaker 1: was like you have to And I think that prepared
- 56:12Speaker 1: me for quite frankly, like the launch of my app.
- 56:16Speaker 4: The fact that I.
- 56:19Speaker 1: Mean I waited probably three years longer than when I
- 56:25Speaker 1: think back, like everything happens for a reason, But I
- 56:28Speaker 1: spent a good two or three years not being able
- 56:31Speaker 1: to get over in my head again the same scenario
- 56:35Speaker 1: that I that happened to me in like ninety eight
- 56:38Speaker 1: with diving into group fitness, a few years after just training.
- 56:43Speaker 1: The fact that no matter how specific I am with
- 56:47Speaker 1: my queuing, and you know that is that is my thing, right,
- 56:50Speaker 1: I'm known for like expert queuing, there's gonna be someone
- 56:55Speaker 1: in their house somewhere who doesn't have fantastic body awareness
- 56:59Speaker 1: and when I'm saying is not connecting and they're not
- 57:02Speaker 1: going to be doing it like absolutely perfectly, which no
- 57:06Speaker 1: one is perfect, right, But like I couldn't in my
- 57:09Speaker 1: head get over the fact that I can't see them,
- 57:12Speaker 1: and I can't like what the what ifs were like
- 57:16Speaker 1: a huge thing to me, Like what if I can't
- 57:19Speaker 1: see them? And like, ultimately I'm not making them healthier?
- 57:22Speaker 1: They're what if they hurt? You know, they I could
- 57:24Speaker 1: end up like smoking to get hurt. And it was
- 57:26Speaker 1: like I finally had to let go and say, like.
- 57:28Speaker 4: You again, you can only do what you can do, and.
- 57:32Speaker 1: If you know in your heart you're putting out the
- 57:35Speaker 1: best quality information that you possibly can and people are
- 57:39Speaker 1: going to have fun while they're doing it, that's all
- 57:42Speaker 1: you can do.
- 57:42Speaker 4: And that's all I could hope that how do you.
- 57:44Speaker 3: How do you get to that point? Though? For someone
- 57:46Speaker 3: who's struggling to get there, yeah.
- 57:49Speaker 4: I mean I think it was more. It wasn't just me.
- 57:52Speaker 1: It was like two clients that I have who one
- 57:57Speaker 1: of them is Brendan Fallis, who ended up like he
- 58:01Speaker 1: was I have to give him so much credit, both
- 58:03Speaker 1: he and Hannah Brothman.
- 58:04Speaker 4: They were so.
- 58:06Speaker 1: Adamant that he was like, You've got to share You're
- 58:08Speaker 1: so he was like, you have to share this with
- 58:10Speaker 1: the world, Like the way you train and put movement
- 58:13Speaker 1: together is so different, Like people deserve to experience this.
- 58:16Speaker 1: And it was also I would say it was also
- 58:18Speaker 1: Canvas as well, Candice Cameron Beret, who was like, you know,
- 58:22Speaker 1: my method just clicked with her immediately, and She's like,
- 58:25Speaker 1: I've never done anything like this. I've never felt this good,
- 58:27Speaker 1: I've never felt this strong, I've never felt disconnected. People
- 58:30Speaker 1: need to experience this, and so my first what I
- 58:34Speaker 1: did first, Emily, was I signed an LOI to open
- 58:38Speaker 1: a studio in New York City and I was like, Okay,
- 58:43Speaker 1: that's how I'm going to do because I can watch it.
- 58:45Speaker 4: I can you know, I can.
- 58:47Speaker 1: See And then I remember for about a month, I
- 58:53Speaker 1: couldn't sleep and I was coming up with every reason.
- 58:58Speaker 4: Like why this is going to be so hard.
- 59:01Speaker 1: And my husband looks at me and he's like, this
- 59:04Speaker 1: is a time where you should be so excited about
- 59:06Speaker 1: what you're about to embark on, and you're not. You're anxious,
- 59:12Speaker 1: Like you're anxious about it. He goes, So you got
- 59:14Speaker 1: to step back and are you doing this because you
- 59:17Speaker 1: want to do it? Or are you doing it because
- 59:19Speaker 1: everybody thinks this is your next step in your career,
- 59:22Speaker 1: Because you've got to figure out, like you have to
- 59:25Speaker 1: really want to do this, he goes, and you're also
- 59:27Speaker 1: he's like, you think you're going to be able to
- 59:28Speaker 1: control every person. You're not going to teach every class.
- 59:32Speaker 1: You have to hire people to teach the client. And
- 59:34Speaker 1: what are you going to do when somebody else is
- 59:35Speaker 1: teaching and you don't know that they care as much
- 59:37Speaker 1: as you care, And they don't because it's not their business, right,
- 59:40Speaker 1: so they're not going to care as much as you care.
- 59:43Speaker 1: No one will care as much as you can you
- 59:45Speaker 1: get over that, and I couldn't, and I was like,
- 59:49Speaker 1: this is not what I want. This is I woke
- 59:51Speaker 1: up and I was like I've never felt so good
- 59:54Speaker 1: as the day that I was like, I am not
- 59:56Speaker 1: doing this, Like I made a decision I do not
- 59:59Speaker 1: want brick and mortar, and but I'm going to do
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: a virtual studio. I was like in my head, I
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: was like, I know, and I have so many people
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: that are also like, you know, so supportive of what
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: I do. And I think that was the first time
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: as someone who like you know, admittedly some a perfectionist
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: for sure, like I'll never apologize for being when people
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: say like, oh, recovering perfectionists like this this whole thing
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: out there that I feel like the word perfectionist has
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: become like a buzzword, that it's a bad thing. I
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: think if you're a perfectionist who can accept that the
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: goal of doing something really well, that's the goal, but
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: being able to accept the fact that no one is perfect,
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: right if you it's one thing to like have that
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: goal of wanting to do really well and wanting to
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: do your best, but also you know, as I said,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: being able to step back and say, like, no one's perfect.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: And so I finally had this moment where I was like,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: it's okay that people aren't going to be doing maybe perfectly.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: If your words to you are as good as they
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: can be to convey a message, then again, that's all
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: you can ask for.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: It's such an important lesson, like that idea of doing
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: something because you feel it so deeply in your heart
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: and you feel it's very purposeful for you versus like
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: doing whatever you feel like you're supposed to be doing.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: And that the number of people, and I don't fault
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: them for saying to me, like, this is your next step.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: Why don't you have your own studio? So many people
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: are saying it to you, and you're going, yeah, why
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: don't I, Why don't I? Like this is crazy, I
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: should have my own studio.
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: Whatever.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: But in my heart of hearts like knowing, like I
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: there's a lot I love. I like a wonderful life.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: I love to travel. I clients in LA that pre
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: COVID you know, every month I'm going to see them.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: And I freaking love having the ability to do that.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: You have a break and mortar studio, like you, you
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: are tied, that is it? Like you have to be there?
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: You can't, you can't. In my mind, I made the
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: decision that I knew I wouldn't be able to enjoy
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: life the way I really love to enjoy it, like
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: the ability to like fly by the seat of my
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: pants and go places and just do things. It's like,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: I don't you know at that point, I was forty
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: three and I was like I should be doing less,
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: not more.
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: This is kind of caused me to be able to
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: do more. I'm going to be right back.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: To where I was when I was one one right,
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: and I was like, oh no, no, no. And so the
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: beauty of you know, the app, which it had its
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: second birthday in the end of February, was that it's
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: my It's one hundred percent mine, like I own it
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: one hundred percent. I can reach so many more people
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: than I ever could have been brick and mortar, right,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: Like you can't like that's it, Like that's you're limited.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: The tens of thousands of people that are now subscribed
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: to this app, who are from all over the world
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: world not only are feeling their best, but they've made
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: friendships with one another just virtually that are like through
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: the Facebook group and whatnot. That it's so cool to see, right,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: It's like you've created this community that's taken on a
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: it's taken on a life of its own even without me,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: where they're just talking back and forth and want to
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: meet and it's like it's the coolest thing. And it's
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: like that I sleep so well at night now, And
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: it's part of it is also trusting myself, and I
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: believe anybody who's embarking on something like this with like
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: a virtual digital journey and fitness trusting, like you have
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: to trust that what you do and what you put
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: out is that good. Right that Now when I see
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: people and they tag me on their stories, and of
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: course the first thing I do is watch their form,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: I'm so freaking proud when I see like I'm like
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: I can't believe it, Like they're really.
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: Doing this so well, right, So it's a beautiful thing.
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: It's a beautiful thing.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: It's like it's it's I'm so grateful that my whole
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: path totally shifted, right. It was like, oh, studio, here's
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: the next rout and it was like, no, I'm going
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: to go this way. And having that in place obviously
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: a year before COVID was so huge, Like I have
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: to say, like the timing of that I was.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: I was set up right.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: I was set up for for just like the perfect storm,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: you know, for when we all had to go digital.
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: I was like, thank god, I have this right now, right,
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: because yeah.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: You know, says I knew it, just as everyone knew
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: it just came to a halt.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: Five hundred and eighteen thousand plus people following you on
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: Instagram when they come to your page, they see a
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: woman that is looking pretty good and training a lot
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: of humans and all the things. When you look in
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: the mirror, what is it that you see looking back
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: at you?
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: I am who I am?
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: Like, there's nothing I know that my page and what
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: you see on Instagram and you look at me, you think,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: I think if you just came to the page, you
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: think it's like she's like a machine. All that's on
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: here is like working out. It's one thing or the other.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: And I think sometimes I look in the mirror and
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: I giggle because I'm like, you get a sense of
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: it in my stories, which is why my stories are
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: so much more. It's why people love them. Right, It's
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: like a little bit of me, a little bit of Gary.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: It's you hear me laugh, right, and laughter and humor
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: and really truly having gratitude for not just the ability
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: to move, but just gratitude for life, just just the
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: fact that I get to do what I do for
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: a living. I get to have just amazing people in
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: my life, my family. I guess I look in the
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: mirror and just think, Wow, I'm really fortunate, you know,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: And I don't believe that. It's I hate to say,
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: like I'm really lucky. I'm not someone I don't believe.
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: It's not luck.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: It's choices, right, and consciously having made choices in my
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: life that led me to a place where I'm just
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: really content, content and still you know, grateful that I
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: know there's so much more to come. It's funny. Someone
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: asked me that day on Instagram. They said it was
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: a girl and she was thirty seven, and she said
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: to me, how do you not get upset about aging
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: and your age? I'm thirty seven and I'm already having
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: anxiety over it and can't sleep at night. And my
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: husband tells me just to enjoy the moment. And I said,
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: you know, I.
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: Thought about it, and I was like, oh my gosh, it's
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: thirty seven to be like, I think everybody thinks about aging.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: Everybody thinks of they're you know, there's you'd be lying
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: to say like, oh no, oh, you know, we know
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: age is just a number.
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: It is just a number. It's like it is.
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: It's a state of mind, right, And you can't choose.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: You can't stop aging, right, you can't stop growing, but
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: you can choose how you do it. And that's what
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: I wrote back to her. I was like, you can't
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: control the number. The number is going to happen, and
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: be grateful that you're so blessed that you get to
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: keep adding to that, like that is it's a gift
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: that you get to increase the number, right, But you
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: can choose how you how you want to live and
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: how you choose to age, and that should not include
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: being worried about the next year. Like you we all know,
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: but I hope we all learned after this past year.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: It's like, man, you don't know what's going to happen,
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: so you've got to like literally look at every day
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: and think every day is like not every day is
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: going to be a good not every is going to
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: be a good day, but every day has good in it.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: Like as you add the years, you add the wisdom.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: And I'm just planning on getting stronger and stronger every.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: Year, stronger and stronger every year. And I love that
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: you were talking about answering your DMS.
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: That one a kind DM.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: I'm sure there are certainly many that pop into your
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: inbox that may not be so kind and are also
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: a little judgmental. I think as much as people online
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: struggle with bullying when it comes to their size, coming
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: hand in hand with the body positivity movement, I'm sure.
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: That you get a lot of people in your.
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: Dms that have something to say about your physique. So
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: how do you deal with that?
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: I you know, I'm not going to sit here and
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: say that it doesn't bother me. I don't think there's
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: anybody that can read some of the really horrible things
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: that people say, like someone calling you look like a
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: starved dog, or yeah, that was one of the words,
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: you look like a man. You know, you can imagine
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: they're abviously.
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: On your face. You're like, oh my god, but like
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: things where you're just like.
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: The first thing I do is I look at I go,
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: what human could actually say this to another human? And
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: what's going on with them that's causing them to have
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: to say this and feel good about like you can't like,
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: I just it blows it does blow my mind. I'm
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: not gonna lie that someone could, even through a screen,
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: type such horrible things, right, And what's even worse is
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: than when sometimes I like, if you get it, and
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: I'll just happen to look at their profile, and many
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: times I'll say, like mom of three, and I think
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: to myself, oh gosh, how badly I want to write
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: back to this person and say you know that the
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: sand my, you have children, you have like I really hope,
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: but I don't. I never write back, quite honestly, because
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: it's just not it's not worth it, right, and it's
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: but usually these people are just looking to they're just
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: looking to engage with you. They're looking to get a
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: rise out of you. That's it. That's what they want.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: And I have to say, like, one of the best
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: things I listened to it was Brene Brown and she's
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: so brilliant and she quoted the Teddy Roosevelt speech right
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: and it's the man in the Arena And I wish
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: I could remember the entire speech, but I can't. But
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: you know, it's basically the way she sums it up
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: in her words too, or that you know, when you've
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: got people sitting in the cheap seats throwing stones, you
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: can't pay attention to those people. They're not even willing
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: to step into the arena, right, you can say all
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: you want, but if you're someone just from the you know,
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: if you're looking from the outside in and you're critiquing
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: someone and yet you aren't putting yourself out there, how
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: can you don't give those people the time of day?
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: You know?
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: And I think that's so true, and it's very hard.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: Like I'm not going to pretend that it's like an
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: easy thing to ignore these things, and you shouldn't ignore them.
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: I still think like you should. You have to, like.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: You want to see what people are saying, you know,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: like it's it's you have to be aware. You can't
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: just like shut things down, but you can't let it.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: You just can't let it affect it. You have to,
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: like you always, I always have to think of it
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: as like what must be going on with this person.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: It's my husband that I sometimes have to like pull
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: off the off the rains, like he's he's also known
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: to go on clients pages of mind when someone's giving
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: a client of mine crap and just go to tell
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: like he's so protective, and I'm like, step away, step away,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: don't do it.
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: It's worth and we both know it. But you know,
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: you have your moments.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: I always say, like there's times when I also know,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: like when i'm PMS, like I should not be answering
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: DMS or.
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: Teaching a class, or it's like it's like very self aware.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, gosh, She's like, just not not.
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: Not today, not today, not today, Like you got to
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: know that I care. So what else excites you right now?
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: What else excites me?
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: Well, first and foremost, I'm excited that we're somewhat opening
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: up in the world and I get to see my
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: family that I get to see my I'm an auntie
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: and I'm such a proud aunt and I get to
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: see my nieces and nephews that I haven't seen in
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: Almost two years at this point coming through.
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: So those like and honestly going out to see clients
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: in LA, which I haven't been able to.
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: Do in fourteen months, Like that excites me. This weather
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: excites me. But also just what I have a business.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: Wise talking about in terms of business, what it's like,
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: I mean, just the fact that I have the opportunity
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: to keep building this app as you know, as it
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: is my own I mean, I think when you have
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: something and it's your own business, and you have put
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: your heart and soul into it, like to continue to
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: build it and make it better for people so they
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: can move better. Is there's not a day that goes
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: by that I'm not excited about that.
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: And there's so much more coming to.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: That app and a lot of collaborations that are happening
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: with the app, and you know the equipment too, Like
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: I've got some good stuff up my sleeve, just as
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: far as it's not just the app, it's the band,
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: the sliders, it's the ball, but then we've got a
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: jump rope and we've got four other pieces of equipment
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: that that I've been working on for a year now.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: That's all great, but really where I want to you know,
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: what I see down the road that I really hope
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: can make happen. And I'm like, you know, I'm manifesting it,
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: but I know that to manifest you also have to,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: like there's more to manifesting than just thinking about it, right,
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: It's like it's like that's the first step, but then
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: you have to actually really come up with a plan
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: and what I really want to do. Man, I miss
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: teaching in person, Like I there's nothing I'm so grateful
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: for the app and you know, having a virtual platform,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: but nothing replaces that in person energy. So really what
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: I want to do is find a way to marriage
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: the two so when the world opens up a little
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: more and my husband. I've been talking about this for
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: a while but almost starting like a I just am
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: so I'm so like in love with the community that
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: this app has, so to literally do a tour where
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: we've just got like a tricked out r V, which
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: I mean, if Gary and I can stay married after
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: this situation, after trying this, this will be amazing because
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: he can't even back out of our driveway without hitting
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: the curve. So seeing Gary trying to drive an RV
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: is just going to be I get, like a reality
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: show in itself, but doing like a tour across country
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: to get out to LA and literally stopping in like
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: grocery store parking lots and doing up stoked events where
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: like I just you know, anybody, I just put it
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: out there on social and it's like I'm going to
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: be in this spot and I just want everybody to
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: come and meet one another and you know, just feel
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: that in person energy, because I mean, this is the
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: first break I've taken from teaching live classes in twenty
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: years was COVID and I always I keep saying to Gary,
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: I was like, I, I that was one of the
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: hardest things about the pandemic. Was like, man, not only
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: you know it's shut down, but it was like, that's
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: not how I wanted to go out. That's not how
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: I wanted to hang up my sneakers from teaching. Like
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: I didn't want it to be my last class to
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: be determined by a pandemic, not by my own my
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: own lack of desire to teach live classes anymore, you know.
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: And because the studio that I taught out like closed forever,
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: you know, so that's not even an option. And quite frankly,
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: to me, teaching live classes with a mask on, I
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: would rather just do it outside where we can be
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: a part and you know, like enjoy the experience. Really,
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: So that's really what man. I think about that, and
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: like I get so pumped about it, just the thought
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: of being able to hang with humans like that, you know, sweat,
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: it's like sweat equity, you know, it's like this bond
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: that you forge in sweat that just there's nothing better.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: You know, you've taken classes and you know it's like, man,
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: we all miss that feeling.
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: We miss coming feeling. Something's coming back.
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: It's coming, it's coming back, all right. Closing question here
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: you ready.
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: I'm ready. You're freaking me out though.
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: Right right now, Kira, yep, you have an opportunity to
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: offer the Kira that was sitting in with her mentor
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: watching him whenever she could get away from the front desk,
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: excited about a potential career in fitness. Yes, trying to
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: make her parents get on board. One piece of advice
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: looking back on it, right now, what do you tell her?
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: I think I would tell her first and foremost, give
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: yourself grace. So just you know, it took me a
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: long time, as I said, like find the joy in
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: the journey, right, it took me versus being so concerned
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: about how many people.
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: Are you training? Like how like.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: Back then, like I think you know, this profession has
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: always been about serving others like I do believe I'm
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: in the service industry and I forever will be. It
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: doesn't matter whether you know you're starting in it right
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: now or you've been in the industry for twenty five years.
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: You are in the service industry. And I think.
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: Back then, being so concerned about the numbers and being
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: so concerned about, you know, quantity over quality that I
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: think telling myself, like, have patients, you know, have patience
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: with yourself and have patients, like flex your muscles of
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: patients and things will the universe will unfold as it should,
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: and like, you know, one step at a time. I
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: think it was and I think any fitness professional this
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: in this day and age should should take that advice.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: It's like, don't be so concerned with what's happening next,
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: but appreciate what's directly in front of you and the
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: people that you are surrounding yourself with and the clients
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: that you're working with. Man, Like, each one of those
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: people deserves one hundred percent of your attention, whether the
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: first client or the last cent of the day. They
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: don't care whether they were first or last clients to them,
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: like this is this is their one hour with you,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: So just remember, like how much that means to that
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: one person. Another thing I think I would have told
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: my younger self is that you know, I'm such I'm
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: like a huge smiler. I smile constantly, and I don't
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: remember doing that when I was younger as a trainer
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: because I was so intense with like where is this?
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: Where is this taking me? Like what's next? Like how
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: many people I training?
- 1:19:23Speaker 4: I didn't like Now I smile like all the time,
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: like I work out as man. I don't think.
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: I don't think I appreciated back then, and I don't
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: think you do it at a young age.
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: I think it's really hard.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: To appreciate just the simple act of movement, just the
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: gratitude towards being able to move your body. I think,
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: you know, rather than being like always looking for the
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: challenge of moving your body, just appreciating the actual just
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: act of being able to do so. And I think,
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: you know, that's just that's I don't know if that
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: can be taught at a young age, but I definitely
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: would have told myself to just, you know, take more
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: walks and jump, do less box drumps, enjoy your moving
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: meditation of walking or running versus.
- 1:20:10Speaker 4: Like let me get on.
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: Like it's like okay, like there's a time and place
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: for that. But man, like, if I had taken more walks,
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: I probably would have figured a lot more out.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: Kia, thanks so much for coming on the show today.
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: Talk to the hurdlers with you. How can they follow
