Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Derrek.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Once again in this beautifully lit studio thanks to Andy Gladding,
- 0:10Speaker 2: or engineering mastermind at Salem, New York. Back here with
- 0:15Speaker 2: Lou Turminel and one leg up with Alex Garrett, LOUI.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Lou, Alex, Good morning.
- 0:21Speaker 2: A lot of teams are looking forward to this All
- 0:23Speaker 2: Star break, wouldn't you agree?
- 0:25Speaker 1: I would say so.
- 0:26Speaker 3: I would say that the first the thing that really
- 0:29Speaker 3: surprises me about the first half of the season the streaks.
- 0:35Speaker 3: The streaks. I mean, let's take two quick examples. The
- 0:41Speaker 3: Cleveland Guardians lost ten in a row. They go into
- 0:46Speaker 3: Houston last Monday. Houston had just beaten the Dodgers three
- 0:53Speaker 3: in a row at at Dodgers Stadium. They were riding
- 0:57Speaker 3: high the astros. Cleveland goes into use and sweeps them.
- 1:02Speaker 3: It really doesn't make any sense. And there there are.
- 1:06Speaker 1: There are a lot of examples like that.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Say in our own division of the Al East, Boston's
- 1:11Speaker 2: on a ten game win.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Stream absolutely when it looked like they were dead and
- 1:15Speaker 3: they're not dead.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Positions are in play right now, it feels.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Like I would say so, Yeah, I would say the
- 1:23Speaker 3: seven positions are in play, which is going to make
- 1:25Speaker 3: the trade deadline different.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Is it going to be.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Exciting a lot of trades or with so many teams
- 1:36Speaker 3: bunched up? There's five American League teams only four and
- 1:39Speaker 3: a half games or less out of the wildcard spot.
- 1:43Speaker 3: In the National League, there's four that are five and
- 1:46Speaker 3: a half games or less out of the wildcard spot
- 1:49Speaker 3: with two months to go. That's that's a lot of
- 1:52Speaker 3: teams that have that believe they have a chance. You
- 1:55Speaker 3: might see contenders trading, would con not training with teams
- 2:02Speaker 3: that are out of.
- 2:02Speaker 2: It, right, I mean that could happen.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I'm not sure, but that could happen.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Louis, I gotta ask you this because I feel like
- 2:12Speaker 2: it's been a fast first half the last few years,
- 2:14Speaker 2: since the realignment, since the twelve games against the division.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Is it just a faster pace now because there's so
- 2:21Speaker 2: few games you can screw up against your division rival
- 2:23Speaker 2: now it just makes everything faster.
- 2:25Speaker 1: No, it's true.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I don't like the way the schedule is now, but
- 2:32Speaker 3: they're not going to change it, I don't think.
- 2:34Speaker 2: And you know what ords of the seven playoff spots
- 2:38Speaker 2: that make it faster as well, like a little more
- 2:40Speaker 2: fast paced. What do you think.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Well, you know, the Major league owners wanted the seventh
- 2:46Speaker 3: team and the Players Association only wanted six teams in
- 2:51Speaker 3: the playoffs, and this one, I'm glad that the Players
- 2:54Speaker 3: Association won.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Oh so those only six teams? Okay, right right, it's
- 2:58Speaker 2: the NFL, that's seven. I guess that.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Is correct, That is correct. Yes, all these you know,
- 3:03Speaker 3: all these leagues adding teams.
- 3:05Speaker 1: It's just it's just crazy.
- 3:07Speaker 2: And now college playoff might be floating a fourteen game
- 3:10Speaker 2: play Yeah, now it's playoff, and the March madness might
- 3:14Speaker 2: go to seventy two to seventy six teams.
- 3:17Speaker 3: It's it's all about squeezing every dollar out of a
- 3:21Speaker 3: TV deal.
- 3:22Speaker 2: But that six spot also makes the season go faster
- 3:24Speaker 2: because there's so many more teams in contention now.
- 3:26Speaker 3: So well, you want to stay in contention, but there's
- 3:29Speaker 3: nothing worse than being out of it in July and August.
- 3:35Speaker 3: I mean, imagine if we were watching the Chicago White
- 3:38Speaker 3: Sox in the Colorado Rockies.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I mean, the White Socks are still considerably better than
- 3:42Speaker 2: the Rockies.
- 3:43Speaker 1: That's it.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah, And you know, so it's been an interesting weekend. Look,
- 3:48Speaker 2: the Mets ending, and I really think the one Soto
- 3:51Speaker 2: All Star. It wasn't a snob, Okay, I don't think
- 3:53Speaker 2: it at all.
- 3:54Speaker 1: It's a snob. It's a snob, Alex.
- 3:58Speaker 3: The season's only three long so far. He wins player
- 4:03Speaker 3: at a month of one of those three months, the
- 4:05Speaker 3: month leading into the All Star Game, and he doesn't
- 4:08Speaker 3: make it. And they put jokers on like Jazz Chisholm,
- 4:12Speaker 3: who's only played sixty.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Out of ninety seven games. I mean, are you kidding me?
- 4:18Speaker 3: Or Jacob Mizeroski, who's pitched twenty five innings.
- 4:23Speaker 1: The All Star Game is not what it is. Sorry,
- 4:25Speaker 1: it's just not well.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Do you think that the snub fired him up? Though?
- 4:29Speaker 2: Because now he's in the homers left and right, it
- 4:31Speaker 2: seems like.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Well, again, he had a great June to remember, the
- 4:35Speaker 3: All Star snub came July first, and again, I don't
- 4:39Speaker 3: really care about the All Star Game. I'm not gonna
- 4:41Speaker 3: be watching it. I'm not watching Home Run Derby tonight.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I don't care about that stuff, because, Alex, this is
- 4:47Speaker 3: before your time. If your late father was alive, he'd
- 4:50Speaker 3: be telling you this. The All Star Game was not
- 4:54Speaker 3: It was an exhibition game, but these guys played to
- 4:56Speaker 3: win You're not gonna see Pete Rose slide into Ray
- 5:01Speaker 3: Fossey anymore in these All Star games.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Well, look at this Max free situation. Okay, so Max
- 5:07Speaker 2: is not even I don't think he's even playing pitching tomorrow.
- 5:12Speaker 3: But he's not the only one, Alex. It's not only
- 5:15Speaker 3: Max Freed. It's Zach Wheeler, It's Jacob de Gram, it's
- 5:19Speaker 3: Matthew Boyd. All of them pitched on Saturday. Now Freed
- 5:22Speaker 3: had also has the blister situation. That's legit. It wake
- 5:30Speaker 3: me up on a Friday when the season resumes.
- 5:33Speaker 1: But should should Juan Soto have been on the All
- 5:36Speaker 1: Star team?
- 5:37Speaker 3: Of course he should, he has an over four hundred
- 5:39Speaker 3: on base percentage. But again I don't care, as I
- 5:43Speaker 3: told you last week, as long as he wins the
- 5:46Speaker 3: MVP of the World Series or as a contributed world
- 5:48Speaker 3: and the Mets get to the World Series.
- 5:50Speaker 1: You know, it's it's it's nuts, I mean.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Really, do the are we still at the point where
- 5:57Speaker 3: a player has to be selected from every team?
- 6:00Speaker 1: Does anybody on the on the.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Thirty two and a sixty four White Sox deserve to
- 6:05Speaker 3: be picked or the twenty two and seventy four Colorado Rockies. Yes,
- 6:10Speaker 3: I know, Punter Goodman, the guy they picked is having
- 6:13Speaker 3: all starts to season, But I don't care about those stats.
- 6:17Speaker 1: The Colorado Rockies.
- 6:20Speaker 3: I can't believe that the Colorado Rockies all worse than
- 6:23Speaker 3: last year's White Sox, who I thought was the worst
- 6:26Speaker 3: team I had ever seen outside of an expansion team.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Well, and wasn't just the lost number. Was the way
- 6:30Speaker 2: they were losing. Remember they had to bump it into
- 6:32Speaker 2: each other. They were as Actually Jason Bennetti said they
- 6:38Speaker 2: were losing in White Sox ways. I mean, there's no
- 6:40Speaker 2: doubt about it, that's right.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Well, that's why he left to go to the Tigers.
- 6:43Speaker 2: He made a good move as the Labor and now
- 6:46Speaker 2: the Anks are good. But I mean, Labor seems to
- 6:48Speaker 2: have really refreshed himself in Detroit and he deserves to
- 6:50Speaker 2: be on the All Star team.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Talking about the guy, you gotta look at this way,
- 6:53Speaker 3: he signed a one year prove it deal with the
- 6:55Speaker 3: with the Tigers.
- 6:57Speaker 2: And he's gonna get aything at the end of the year,
- 7:00Speaker 2: and he's proving it now. One guy who are they're
- 7:03Speaker 2: already saying get his money now, and I agree is
- 7:06Speaker 2: Peter Alonzo. Okay, so Soto makes the dumb comment he
- 7:09Speaker 2: doesn't have anybody around him or something like that, and
- 7:11Speaker 2: all of a sudden, Peter Alonzo wakes up and does, well,
- 7:14Speaker 2: you got me, and I will tell you this. I
- 7:18Speaker 2: will tell you this. The guy is putting up numbers
- 7:22Speaker 2: and he's hitting homers almost like he left off last season. Uh,
- 7:26Speaker 2: they should extend him, shouldn't they.
- 7:28Speaker 1: I think they're gonna wait. They're gonna wait to the
- 7:30Speaker 1: end of the year.
- 7:32Speaker 3: We know that David Stearns is not a big value
- 7:37Speaker 3: of first baseman.
- 7:38Speaker 1: He devalues the position.
- 7:41Speaker 3: But if the Mets don't resign Alonzo, that would be
- 7:45Speaker 3: a mistake in my opinion, it really would be.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Kay. He leads to Nashley RBI. He's tied with with
- 7:52Speaker 1: Suzuki on the Cubs.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And he's in. You know, I think a lot of
- 7:55Speaker 2: Med fans are rallying around him like they did David Wright,
- 7:57Speaker 2: whose number is being retired this weekend. Very cool for David, Yes,
- 8:03Speaker 2: David Right.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Unfortunately, he was on his way to a Hall of
- 8:07Speaker 3: Fame path and then started suffering the back fracture, which
- 8:12Speaker 3: I believe was in San Francisco. He played with it anyway,
- 8:17Speaker 3: and then you know, once you hurt your back, as
- 8:19Speaker 3: we've seen with with Edgardo Alfonso, with Don Mattingly, if
- 8:24Speaker 3: you want to talk about a couple of local stars,
- 8:27Speaker 3: the back the back in pacts so much. I'm glad
- 8:31Speaker 3: that he's getting his number retired. He was a great
- 8:34Speaker 3: met It's a shame that he was injured for those
- 8:37Speaker 3: last six or seven years, but he always played hard
- 8:41Speaker 3: and it's an honor he deserves.
- 8:43Speaker 1: He deserves to have his number five.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Retired, you know, and and Spiles knows it's nothing to
- 8:48Speaker 2: mess with.
- 8:49Speaker 3: And no, believe me, I have it. I have spine,
- 8:52Speaker 3: and everybody in my family has it. My mother was
- 8:54Speaker 3: hospitalized with it. You know, it's it's it's not.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Fun in Colorado. I'm not mistaken. There it was.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I couldn't remember it was Colorado with San Francisco.
- 9:05Speaker 2: But then it was a diving play and that was
- 9:07Speaker 2: David right right there, right.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Yeah, that's.
- 9:11Speaker 2: He. Also, you know, got that walk off against uh Mariano.
- 9:16Speaker 2: I remember that was quite a moment.
- 9:18Speaker 1: I do remember that.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Night, and you know, years later, I can't remember the combination,
- 9:23Speaker 2: but the short stop at third basement, maybe Fraser was
- 9:26Speaker 2: a third. But you know, when they wear the high
- 9:28Speaker 2: socks and short, it reminds me of rays and and
- 9:30Speaker 2: right again, you miss that combination there on the left side.
- 9:34Speaker 2: But yes, at Fred's point, right deservedly in the hall
- 9:38Speaker 2: this week. But I feel like Alonso is making his case.
- 9:41Speaker 1: No question, there's no doubt about it.
- 9:44Speaker 2: When you were short, I believe of Darryl Strawberry's record, So.
- 9:47Speaker 3: That's correct, he is going to pass Darryl Strawberry. Now,
- 9:51Speaker 3: Darryl Strawberry should have been the greatest everyday met player
- 9:56Speaker 3: of all time, but of course he's drug and alcohol
- 9:59Speaker 3: problem got him. And it's a shame because Alex the
- 10:04Speaker 3: sweetest swing ever.
- 10:07Speaker 2: But and I mean I was around to watch his yankeeer.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I was not around to watch his met ear, but
- 10:12Speaker 2: I hear the met era was really just something.
- 10:14Speaker 3: Well that's what that was his peak years, you know,
- 10:17Speaker 3: and he was a you know, you know that term
- 10:20Speaker 3: five tool player.
- 10:21Speaker 1: He was a five tool player. He could do everything.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Now were those two I gotta ask, because I know
- 10:25Speaker 2: Doc came up as rookie years, Well, were those two drafted?
- 10:28Speaker 2: I mean, the NMLB draft is becoming a thing, but
- 10:30Speaker 2: it was a thing for many years. They got a
- 10:32Speaker 2: lot of great players out of this draft.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Year, right, well, the Mets drafted both and when they
- 10:36Speaker 3: drafted Strawberry, you might remember Bryce Harper being on the
- 10:42Speaker 3: cover Sports Illustrated. Strawberry was at that level as he
- 10:46Speaker 3: was going through the system, and then he came up
- 10:48Speaker 3: in eighty three.
- 10:50Speaker 1: He didn't start the season.
- 10:51Speaker 3: In eighty three, came up in eighty three, and even
- 10:54Speaker 3: he didn't start the season, he won nationally Rookie of
- 10:56Speaker 3: the Year. He should have been the MVP in eighty eight,
- 10:59Speaker 3: and they didn't give it to him. He was one
- 11:03Speaker 3: of the He was him Strawberry, Carter Hernanda. Of course
- 11:07Speaker 3: the Hernandez trade. You know, they traded Leemazilli for Walt
- 11:11Speaker 3: Terrell and Ron Darling, and then they got really bad.
- 11:16Speaker 2: The eight team should have been a World Series content.
- 11:20Speaker 1: No doubt.
- 11:21Speaker 3: I mean, that's that is frustrating that the eighty eight
- 11:24Speaker 3: team lost to a team that they had beaten ten
- 11:28Speaker 3: out of eleven in the regular season.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Which was I think the Cubs, right, I mean it.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Was the Dodgers, the Dodgers.
- 11:35Speaker 3: The Dodgers they beaten the Dodgers are ten out of
- 11:37Speaker 3: eleven and they beat her Shis who was having that
- 11:41Speaker 3: magnificent season. In Game one, they were down to nothing
- 11:44Speaker 3: in the ninth inning, scored three in the top of
- 11:46Speaker 3: the ninth. Then David Cohen, who had a spectacular first
- 11:51Speaker 3: full season in the Major League's, lost Game two. Then
- 11:56Speaker 3: the Mets won Game three, and they lost Game four
- 12:01Speaker 3: and five at home.
- 12:02Speaker 1: And I was at.
- 12:03Speaker 3: At the Game three d Game four, Game four, Mets
- 12:07Speaker 3: with two outs away from victory good and through a
- 12:10Speaker 3: home run ball to to run home run home ball
- 12:13Speaker 3: to Mike's Soosha, I could still see leaving.
- 12:16Speaker 2: There was I think the Cubs and Mets were buying
- 12:18Speaker 2: for that playoff spot in the eighty eight season. I
- 12:20Speaker 2: think that there was something there with the Cubs in
- 12:22Speaker 2: eighty eight.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Well that was in eighty four, the Mets blue.
- 12:25Speaker 1: The Mets blew out the division in eighty eight.
- 12:27Speaker 2: This is why I have you you connect you correct
- 12:29Speaker 2: my mindset here. But I remember the Cubs were also around.
- 12:32Speaker 3: The Mets blew out the Phillies in eighty eight. They
- 12:34Speaker 3: wanted division easy.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Now the other thing I was I was, yeah, the division.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Now.
- 12:40Speaker 2: The other thing I was going to say about that
- 12:42Speaker 2: year was it was also the breakup of the core
- 12:44Speaker 2: of the Strawberry you know, that whole team sort of
- 12:47Speaker 2: both A couple.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Of years later, they didn't re sign Strawberry, and Strawberry
- 12:52Speaker 3: says it was his biggest mistake, and it was also
- 12:55Speaker 3: the Mets mistake for not pursuing him. But again at
- 13:00Speaker 3: his issues, there's no reason that team should only have
- 13:03Speaker 3: won one World Series, Alex for seven years, that team
- 13:05Speaker 3: was as good.
- 13:06Speaker 1: As any team around and they only won one time.
- 13:10Speaker 3: And it's always those factors that come in that have
- 13:14Speaker 3: really nothing to do with talent. M you know, and
- 13:20Speaker 3: he should be hands down the greatest Met everyday player
- 13:24Speaker 3: of all time Downstow.
- 13:25Speaker 1: He's not.
- 13:27Speaker 2: By the way, I gotta give credit to Jay Burwitz here,
- 13:29Speaker 2: who's making sure all these numbers are in the raptors.
- 13:31Speaker 2: I mean, look how many he's gotten up there since
- 13:34Speaker 2: he took over the alumni department.
- 13:36Speaker 1: You're right, because the Mets were slow.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I'm not one of these guys to say retire every number,
- 13:43Speaker 3: but the Mets were slow in recognizing Hernandez the great
- 13:47Speaker 3: Jerry Kouzman and Jay definitely was a mover and shaker
- 13:53Speaker 3: behind that. So so we'll see, we'll see what happens
- 13:56Speaker 3: the rest of the year with the Mets. The Mets
- 13:58Speaker 3: have too many holes in their line up right now.
- 14:01Speaker 3: I mean, you got a center fielder who is gold
- 14:04Speaker 3: Glove level fielder and a catcher in Lewis Toranz gold
- 14:09Speaker 3: glove catching defensively, but they don't They don't hit.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Enough, and the guy that was hitting is now sent
- 14:16Speaker 2: back to the miners. I mean the Albares. I guess
- 14:19Speaker 2: he did something changes swing in the off season, that's
- 14:21Speaker 2: been drafted.
- 14:23Speaker 3: They sent him down and apparently he is just killing
- 14:26Speaker 3: it down there. He said eighth, He's eight homers in
- 14:29Speaker 3: fourteen games. I assume he will be coming back soon.
- 14:35Speaker 3: But it just goes show you, Alex, the difference between
- 14:39Speaker 3: Triple A and the major leagues. Bert Brett Baty when
- 14:42Speaker 3: they sent him down, was killing it. I mean it
- 14:45Speaker 3: was just, you know.
- 14:48Speaker 2: The highlight reel the whole season. I swear the Met
- 14:50Speaker 2: the Syracuse means highlight reel and everybody. And then when
- 14:53Speaker 2: they come back up, it's a different story.
- 14:56Speaker 3: I mean, I still, I mean, obviously he guys are
- 15:00Speaker 3: so young, you can't write him off. But the guy
- 15:04Speaker 3: and I think Alvarez could still be a star.
- 15:09Speaker 2: And then Manaia there's still I don't know if he's
- 15:11Speaker 2: back up yet, but they're a long awaited return of
- 15:14Speaker 2: Joan Mnya. I mean he needs to get back to Yeah.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, the fact that he pitched yesterday in relief
- 15:20Speaker 3: was a big thing. You know, they did lose the
- 15:22Speaker 3: game three to a bomb line thing, but it didn't
- 15:25Speaker 3: look like Manaia had missed a beat, and they actually
- 15:27Speaker 3: kept him longer in relief than I thought. He puts
- 15:30Speaker 3: three in the third innings in relief of Clay Holmes,
- 15:33Speaker 3: who's now over one hundred and one innings and the
- 15:36Speaker 3: most innings he's ever pitched in the major leagues because
- 15:39Speaker 3: he was a closer was seventy and twenty twenty one.
- 15:42Speaker 3: That's something to look at the rest of the way,
- 15:45Speaker 3: how are they going to manage these innings for a
- 15:48Speaker 3: guy who's never been a starter, and he's done great
- 15:51Speaker 3: as a starter.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Did you think the three thousand k's for clay for
- 15:57Speaker 2: Clayton Kershaw by the way, we think it's too talk
- 16:00Speaker 2: about that last time, but three thousand CA's for Clayton.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Congratulations to him. I feel like, all of a sudden,
- 16:07Speaker 2: now all these complete games are happening after the two
- 16:09Speaker 2: thousand and k like, maybe managers are more inspired to
- 16:12Speaker 2: let these guys go. Garrick Corfe Day having a complete game,
- 16:15Speaker 2: Zach Wheeler complete game. I mean, maybe I'm just noticing
- 16:18Speaker 2: it more, but.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Well, there will be nothing more that would make me
- 16:21Speaker 3: happy that you would get somebody would take over a
- 16:24Speaker 3: major league pitching staff and start pushing these pitchers. That
- 16:28Speaker 3: that would be, that would be sensational. They baby these pitchers.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Alex.
- 16:33Speaker 3: I'm watching the draft yesterday and I'm watching the draft
- 16:36Speaker 3: this morning, and they're up.
- 16:39Speaker 1: They're up to like round seven on Day two, seven
- 16:43Speaker 1: or eight. Alex.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Do you know how many teams are, including the Mets,
- 16:47Speaker 3: And I think the all these teams are picking players
- 16:51Speaker 3: pitchers who had Tommy Johns, who had Tommy John surgery
- 16:55Speaker 3: this year.
- 16:55Speaker 1: They hurt their own.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Wow that they picked them even only to even though
- 17:01Speaker 3: they've undergone Tommy John surgery in the last three months.
- 17:04Speaker 3: So I don't know, I have no I just can't
- 17:08Speaker 3: believe that Tommy John surgery didn't exist. Well, I know
- 17:13Speaker 3: it didn't exist, but the UCL injuries didn't exist back
- 17:17Speaker 3: in the sixties and seventies.
- 17:22Speaker 1: I don't know. Man pitching is one of the is
- 17:24Speaker 1: the big thing that.
- 17:26Speaker 3: To uh, it's the biggest change in baseball over the
- 17:30Speaker 3: last fifteen years, no doubt about it.
- 17:33Speaker 1: And so we'll see what the ank.
- 17:35Speaker 3: You know, the Mets are only nine and seventeen from
- 17:37Speaker 3: June thirteenth to yesterday, July thirteenth.
- 17:40Speaker 1: I think the Yankees are eleven and eighteenth from.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Well, let me tell you, after winning eleven nothing on
- 17:45Speaker 2: Friday and you're in the five game win streak, very disappointed.
- 17:49Speaker 2: They lost the next two games, and I know the
- 17:51Speaker 2: Cubs are formerable, but yeah, that theories. I thought the
- 17:53Speaker 2: Yanks could win after that blowout.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Right, yeah, you figured that they would get at least
- 17:57Speaker 3: two out of three.
- 17:59Speaker 1: I think the Yankees are in good shape Tampa Bay.
- 18:03Speaker 1: As I told you a couple of weeks ago.
- 18:05Speaker 3: They have all these road games the second half of
- 18:06Speaker 3: the year because of the Florida Sun. They played so
- 18:10Speaker 3: many games early on in the first half. There are
- 18:14Speaker 3: only three games, oh five hundred. Now they're still in it.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Never count the Rays out, you never count to raise
- 18:19Speaker 1: James themselves.
- 18:20Speaker 2: I mean, there are two games up on the Yanks,
- 18:22Speaker 2: but I don't know. I don't think the Jays are
- 18:24Speaker 2: going to have long Jefviety. I could be wrong here.
- 18:26Speaker 1: I agree with you.
- 18:27Speaker 3: I don't think the Jays are gonna have long Jeffarty.
- 18:29Speaker 3: And I think the Yankees will finish first.
- 18:31Speaker 2: And that's a team. You know, you talk about teams
- 18:33Speaker 2: that should win the World Series. They have a lot
- 18:34Speaker 2: of talent on that Blue Jay team. I mean, they do.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Have a lot of talent on that team.
- 18:38Speaker 3: And there's always something missing, and we you know, I
- 18:41Speaker 3: know we've talked about that in the past, but there's
- 18:43Speaker 3: always something missing with the Jays. I think the Yanks
- 18:46Speaker 3: are going to finish first, and let's face it, the
- 18:48Speaker 3: Mets and Phillies are going to be in the dog
- 18:50Speaker 3: fight to finish first. And those are two really good teams.
- 18:54Speaker 3: The Phillies have major bullpen problems. They have bullprint problems
- 18:58Speaker 3: are as just as major as the Mets holes at
- 19:01Speaker 3: the bottom of their lineup, which I think the Mets
- 19:04Speaker 3: will try to plug.
- 19:05Speaker 1: In connect yeah before the trade dead, and I think
- 19:08Speaker 1: the Phillies will try to improve their bullpen.
- 19:11Speaker 3: The Braves, it's just one of those years where everything's
- 19:14Speaker 3: gone wrong to you guys injured.
- 19:18Speaker 1: It's just one of those years. But when you play.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Them, they're still tough, but they're not going anywhere. They're
- 19:25Speaker 3: nine and a half games out of a playoff spot.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Can they make that up? They can make it up.
- 19:30Speaker 3: I just don't think they are.
- 19:31Speaker 2: By the way, I will go on record and say,
- 19:33Speaker 2: the All Star Game when they pull that out of
- 19:36Speaker 2: Atlanta a few years ago, should have stayed in Atlanta. Okay,
- 19:38Speaker 2: this is not a makeup. It should have been in
- 19:40Speaker 2: there at the beginning with.
- 19:42Speaker 1: You're absolutely correct, But they'll have their.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Moment tomorrow and the longer hayink Aaron tomorrow in the
- 19:47Speaker 2: seven fifteen and whatnot. But it could have been done
- 19:49Speaker 2: a few years ago. That's I think twenty twenty one,
- 19:51Speaker 2: if I'm not mistaken. So yes, you all right? I
- 19:54Speaker 2: want to ask you. I want to tell you this,
- 19:56Speaker 2: though I don't if you remember, Tomorrow's the anniversary of
- 20:00Speaker 2: on the same Tuesday as the Yanks Marathon, say Marathon
- 20:04Speaker 2: All Star Game. I remember that because I was there
- 20:06Speaker 2: all fifteen innings or so. You remember that game?
- 20:09Speaker 1: You sure doing?
- 20:10Speaker 3: That? Actually was the probably the last which competitive or
- 20:16Speaker 3: rivalry type All Star game that I grew up. I
- 20:19Speaker 3: grew up watching all those years I remember that game.
- 20:27Speaker 3: There was no free runner.
- 20:28Speaker 2: And you talk about Justin Homer on Derby Hamilton the
- 20:32Speaker 2: night before, Oh.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Right, I remember that, Yes, I mean he was putting.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Even though he didn't win it, he was.
- 20:39Speaker 2: The star of oh was And that's when they started
- 20:43Speaker 2: to refigure out the format because they thought, well, why
- 20:46Speaker 2: could why did he lose?
- 20:47Speaker 3: You know? Now he put on a show for the
- 20:50Speaker 3: Ages that night, and another another player who should be
- 20:54Speaker 3: a Hall of Fame player, But again, obviously he had
- 20:57Speaker 3: his addiction issues.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Yeah. No, that that one was a sad one. And uh,
- 21:02Speaker 2: you know we uh we pray for these guys. Yeah,
- 21:05Speaker 2: well you didn't have addiction issues. But I'm thinking of
- 21:07Speaker 2: Bobby Jenks as well, who didn't have a diction issues.
- 21:09Speaker 2: But man, that's a tough loss for the White.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Dad that came out of nowhere.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Obviously he's still a very young man forty four years
- 21:16Speaker 3: and uh died of cancer, stomach cancer, uh in Portugal.
- 21:21Speaker 3: And ironically this weekend the White Sox had the anniversary
- 21:27Speaker 3: of the championship team and wife and kids were there.
- 21:31Speaker 2: And the Pope was you know at that World.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Series, Yes she was, he was. I mean, Fox still
- 21:37Speaker 3: has that video, and they had no wight. They just
- 21:40Speaker 3: thought he was another fan.
- 21:41Speaker 2: And now Konerko is connected because probably on the fourteenth,
- 21:45Speaker 2: I mean there's a lot.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Of gave him the jersey.
- 21:49Speaker 2: So uh. And you know that was because in my
- 21:51Speaker 2: lifetime up until that point, there was no Chicago team
- 21:55Speaker 2: that won the World Series. So that was kind of
- 21:56Speaker 2: cool because my dad and I would always go to
- 21:59Speaker 2: the White Sox and the Cubs. That's why yesterday was
- 22:02Speaker 2: so special because in honor of mister Steinbrenner, and I
- 22:06Speaker 2: also did an honor of my dad because he's a
- 22:08Speaker 2: Cub guy. And of course, as you said to me
- 22:10Speaker 2: in text, he's probably smiling right now and how good
- 22:12Speaker 2: his team is, the Cubbies.
- 22:13Speaker 1: So yeah, no, I mean the Cubs are good.
- 22:15Speaker 3: The Cubs are for this is no no fluke.
- 22:19Speaker 1: The Cubs are good. We thought the Cubs were going
- 22:20Speaker 1: to be good.
- 22:21Speaker 3: I didn't think we thought the Cubs were going to
- 22:22Speaker 3: be this good and they're not.
- 22:26Speaker 2: I don't know if they're showing the Dodgers, but they
- 22:28Speaker 2: certainly could give the Dodgers a run for their money
- 22:30Speaker 2: this year into the playoffs.
- 22:31Speaker 1: So well, you mentioned the Dodgers. I still think they're
- 22:35Speaker 1: playing possum. I really do. I mean, I really think as.
- 22:39Speaker 3: We get to like September, in the next month, I
- 22:43Speaker 3: think you're gonna see them start.
- 22:45Speaker 2: To There'll be the Game five when they took advantage
- 22:49Speaker 2: of every mistake the Yankees had and then back up
- 22:51Speaker 2: the bullpen and they weren't kidding around anymore. Basically, is
- 22:54Speaker 2: what you're saying. What you're sounded like is they're gonna
- 22:57Speaker 2: be like that Game five where they took advantage of
- 22:59Speaker 2: every Yankee mistake and then locked it in. I mean,
- 23:02Speaker 2: as I told you Game three and four, well, especially
- 23:05Speaker 2: the Game four, I felt like Roberts was not playing
- 23:07Speaker 2: hard at all, and as I'd say, the Yanks and
- 23:10Speaker 2: are in the victory. But I'm just saying he didn't
- 23:12Speaker 2: play everybody, you know what I mean.
- 23:14Speaker 3: No, he can make a good point. Even with Otani.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Ohtani could pitch five or six innings. Now he's gonna
- 23:23Speaker 3: start pitching five or six innings around Labor Day because
- 23:26Speaker 3: o'tanni is gonna be a major player. Obviously, offensively, we
- 23:29Speaker 3: know he's one of the top two three players in
- 23:32Speaker 3: baseball along with Judge Soto, those guys Kyle Raley, but Alex.
- 23:40Speaker 3: I'm telling you they are babying him pitching wise, coming
- 23:44Speaker 3: off Tommy John because he he's gonna be a major
- 23:47Speaker 3: player pitching wise in the postseason.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Well yeah, and I know the MLB would love the
- 23:53Speaker 2: managa Otani scenario again in the playoffs. I mean, I'm
- 23:57Speaker 2: sure that they're hoping that happens. But we'll see how
- 23:59Speaker 2: the game goes. Speing of cal Rally, I gotta ask
- 24:02Speaker 2: you because I see I think it was Rodriguez dropped
- 24:04Speaker 2: out of the derby. If I'm not mistaken, you wonder
- 24:07Speaker 2: if that's gonna be a thing years from a few
- 24:10Speaker 2: years from now, just because now he's afraid of the
- 24:12Speaker 2: home run derby curse you're in the derby, screws up
- 24:15Speaker 2: your swing. A lot of guys probably are afraid of that.
- 24:18Speaker 2: I mean, there's not many competitors this year.
- 24:19Speaker 3: It seems like, uh and I think Akoonya dropped out
- 24:23Speaker 3: of home run Derby.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Maybe so yeah, So again.
- 24:29Speaker 1: It can't screw up your swing. I think you can.
- 24:32Speaker 3: And again, the next home run Derby Alex I'll be
- 24:35Speaker 3: in will be the first one.
- 24:36Speaker 1: B lie, So I have.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Nothing to relate to it, But I think that's possible.
- 24:45Speaker 3: When Richard Jefferson was in the dunk contest, Yeah, when
- 24:49Speaker 3: he was with the Nets, we were worried that because
- 24:54Speaker 3: some guys who who are in the dunk contest have
- 24:58Speaker 3: after the missing dunks in the dunk context and coming
- 25:01Speaker 3: up with creative dunks. Sometimes when they drive to the hole,
- 25:07Speaker 3: they don't drive with the same authority that they did
- 25:09Speaker 3: when the season starts again, and we actually thought that
- 25:12Speaker 3: was gonna happen with a guy like Richard Jefferson. It
- 25:14Speaker 3: did not happen to him, so, but yeah, those kind
- 25:18Speaker 3: of things can happen.
- 25:20Speaker 1: I mean, did Rick d.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Pahrow did his career really end or he had that
- 25:25Speaker 3: hip injury by being in that skills competition, you know
- 25:29Speaker 3: that that one on one skills to competition and he
- 25:33Speaker 3: stretched trying to make it safe. I don't know, but
- 25:36Speaker 3: again I'm not putting my guys in that position. So
- 25:39Speaker 3: I think the Braves are glad that Queen He's not
- 25:42Speaker 3: not involved.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Well, especially because look at him, He's had this injury, after.
- 25:46Speaker 1: He's had those two bad knee injuries.
- 25:47Speaker 2: And then and then you know, Aaron Judge. I still
- 25:50Speaker 2: believe the twenty seventeen homerun Derby. It changed his career
- 25:54Speaker 2: in a sense. I know he keeps sitting Homer's uses
- 25:56Speaker 2: his three hundred fiftieth over the weekend, which is pretty
- 25:58Speaker 2: amazing how fast he's done that lastest ever. But but
- 26:02Speaker 2: there's no doubt that swing injure him a little bit
- 26:05Speaker 2: over the years. I mean, I know he maybe he recovered,
- 26:08Speaker 2: but there was something to that back in twenty seventeen.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I mean, we'll you know, you can't say
- 26:15Speaker 3: for sure, but you can't say no.
- 26:17Speaker 2: So it'll be it'll be interesting. I I still find
- 26:20Speaker 2: in a tradition to see them line up every year.
- 26:23Speaker 3: Well that's the fun point when Alex, when I was
- 26:26Speaker 3: and again, if your dad was here, he tell you that,
- 26:29Speaker 3: I'm sure he might of The Midsummer Classic was truly
- 26:31Speaker 3: a Midsummer Classic. It was the only time the America
- 26:34Speaker 3: the best of the American League played the best in
- 26:36Speaker 3: the National League. Guys did not drop out unless they
- 26:39Speaker 3: were injured.
- 26:40Speaker 1: In the American League over there.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Now they have these stupid uniforms. It's like, let them this.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Ship are going back to the teams, the players wearing
- 26:49Speaker 3: that team uniform, which I.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Like, I love that right, love that it was so
- 26:53Speaker 2: funny because I think a couple of years ago, because
- 26:55Speaker 2: there was of COVID, the American League was a home
- 26:59Speaker 2: team in the National of the League park and they
- 27:01Speaker 2: were wearing the home jersey and then anything to me, but.
- 27:04Speaker 3: You know, yeah, so, but in those days it was different,
- 27:09Speaker 3: Alex and the American League had a rule that you
- 27:12Speaker 3: that if you made the All Star team, you couldn't
- 27:14Speaker 3: pitch on the Sunday.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Before the All Star Uh, the All Star.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Break, right, you know, guys, the guy the gram pitch Saddy,
- 27:23Speaker 3: he begged off it will pitch Saddy. He begged off
- 27:25Speaker 3: Mac three pitch Saddy. He begged Dolphin even before he
- 27:29Speaker 3: got the blister. Matthew Boy, pitch Saddy.
- 27:32Speaker 1: He's not he's not playing.
- 27:34Speaker 2: So all right, I have to make this one about
- 27:37Speaker 2: the Ulstar Game as well, because even though he didn't
- 27:40Speaker 2: win it in my lifetime, now, I guess except for
- 27:43Speaker 2: Buck Showalter, the three managers that I really grew up
- 27:47Speaker 2: watching in the in the Yankees dugout have now all managed.
- 27:52Speaker 2: I mean, Buck Showlder didn't get there with the Yankees,
- 27:55Speaker 2: but Tory Girardi and now Boone all managers in the
- 27:59Speaker 2: All Star Game. Hey, the Yanks still have some presidents
- 28:02Speaker 2: here even though we haven't won in sixteen years.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Sixteen years is not that long, my friend, I just
- 28:09Speaker 1: asked the Cubbies.
- 28:10Speaker 2: I guess, but m hmm, well this has been fun.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Louis any hockey news. I know we have some hockey
- 28:16Speaker 2: listeners out there, and I mean, I guess is the
- 28:21Speaker 2: one hundredth year of the original six overall? Because all
- 28:24Speaker 2: these team are celebrating one hundred years.
- 28:27Speaker 1: That is correct.
- 28:28Speaker 3: I did see today that they announced the opening nights
- 28:32Speaker 3: schedule on ESPN, with the Ranger going to host Mike
- 28:37Speaker 3: Sullivan's old team, the Pittsburgh Pirates on opening night. Excuse me,
- 28:43Speaker 3: Pittsburgh Penguins, thank you, we're talking baseball. The Penguins they
- 28:49Speaker 3: used to be an NHL team in the twenties, to
- 28:52Speaker 3: call the Pittsburgh Pirates that went out of business in
- 28:54Speaker 3: the NHL. So the Penguins will be at the Garden
- 29:00Speaker 3: October seventh, but the first game is the raising of
- 29:03Speaker 3: the Florida Panther banner at five o'clock. They'll be home
- 29:07Speaker 3: in sunrise against against your father's favorite team, the Chicago Blackhawks.
- 29:13Speaker 2: And then there's a lot of there's a lot of
- 29:16Speaker 2: hope in Chicago. I mean, not only the one hundred
- 29:18Speaker 2: year for them, but they've got a nice core that
- 29:20Speaker 2: they're coming into the season.
- 29:21Speaker 1: They do, there's no doubt about it.
- 29:24Speaker 3: And then Colorado was playing at Los Angeles at ten thirty.
- 29:28Speaker 3: It's an ESPN triple head. The rest of the schedule
- 29:32Speaker 3: be announced on Wednesday, but the collective barring agreement was
- 29:37Speaker 3: completed and between the player Association and the owners. So
- 29:44Speaker 3: starting next year they September fifteenth, the old agreement will
- 29:47Speaker 3: end and the new agreement will come in. A couple
- 29:49Speaker 3: of things I like about it. I know, we talked
- 29:52Speaker 3: about it. We talked about it a fair But there's
- 29:57Speaker 3: the they're gonna they're going to increase the schedule by
- 30:00Speaker 3: two games, which I don't get, but they're gonna increase
- 30:05Speaker 3: the schedule by two games. They are cutting down the
- 30:09Speaker 3: maximum eight year deals to seven year deals if you
- 30:13Speaker 3: sign your own guy, and in free agency instead of
- 30:19Speaker 3: seven year deals are gonna be six year deals.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Like a quote unquote cap on that.
- 30:23Speaker 3: Well, there's a cap. I mean there is a cap.
- 30:24Speaker 3: There's a ceiling in the cap in the NHL.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Now that the fact.
- 30:28Speaker 3: That they're taking the eight year deal down to seven years,
- 30:32Speaker 3: I think means that conom McDavid's going to sign before
- 30:38Speaker 3: training camp or during training camp. I don't think he's
- 30:41Speaker 3: gonna take it to free agency next year, or he's
- 30:44Speaker 3: gonna sign a lesser deal, a four year deal. But
- 30:47Speaker 3: I doubt that because he's twenty eight. So I have
- 30:50Speaker 3: a feeling he's gonna sign at least an eight year
- 30:53Speaker 3: deal before Opening.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Night this year, and obviously he's the number one free
- 30:58Speaker 1: agent this year. The other thing, I don't know some
- 31:03Speaker 1: other little things.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Uh well, I have about Don leokrecor now moving from
- 31:07Speaker 2: ESPN New York radio broadcast, you know, the Rangers to
- 31:11Speaker 2: now Devil's Hockey. That's gonna be very interesting.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Yeah, no, you know doctor that. I was surprised to
- 31:15Speaker 1: see that. Alex. He's a fine announcer.
- 31:19Speaker 3: I know he did Ranger backup for Kenny when Kenny
- 31:22Speaker 3: was on the road on the radio. He's a lifelong
- 31:24Speaker 3: Devils fan, so that's a real for him. I thought
- 31:26Speaker 3: Bill Spaulding did a very fine job in his three
- 31:29Speaker 3: years as played by play announcer. I don't know if
- 31:31Speaker 3: it was a mutual party of the ways, if Spaulding
- 31:34Speaker 3: was fired he should have been fired for uh for
- 31:38Speaker 3: performance because his performance was very good, or he got
- 31:41Speaker 3: a better opportunity that I don't know. So we'll you know,
- 31:46Speaker 3: we'll see, and they're moving. Don Maloney on the Rangers
- 31:50Speaker 3: radio to TV worked with Kenny.
- 31:52Speaker 1: That surprised me.
- 31:53Speaker 2: Also, yeah, but they have such a great rapport on radio.
- 31:56Speaker 2: I think I could see it translating the TV. And
- 31:59Speaker 2: already Maloney's been doing intermission reports with the MSG, so
- 32:03Speaker 2: it's sort of a perfect marriage.
- 32:05Speaker 1: And Kenny's one of.
- 32:06Speaker 3: Those play by play guys who can mess with any
- 32:08Speaker 3: color commentator in any sport he does.
- 32:11Speaker 1: You want a real sign of a talent.
- 32:13Speaker 2: You want a story. So when I was at Viscardi,
- 32:17Speaker 2: he gave us tickets to a Ranger game. And then
- 32:20Speaker 2: they come to the booth. So the Rangers are up
- 32:22Speaker 2: one nothing against the Bruins. We go to the booth,
- 32:25Speaker 2: I think in the third period or something, and I'm
- 32:28Speaker 2: listening to Maloney and Albert and the Bruins going two goals.
- 32:31Speaker 2: They win the game, and I'm like, oh no, that
- 32:33Speaker 2: just jicks this team. So Maloney would not let me
- 32:36Speaker 2: live it down. And then the other funny stories I
- 32:38Speaker 2: saw him in the hallway last year when we saw
- 32:40Speaker 2: Kenny Albert and I actually then dropped his bagel. Now
- 32:43Speaker 2: he's on MSG Networks. I don't know what, but no,
- 32:47Speaker 2: they are really good people and I'm excited to see
- 32:49Speaker 2: them pair up for TV. It's it's gonna be fun.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:53Speaker 3: I thought maybe somebody like Ryan Callahan was going to
- 32:56Speaker 3: get the TV analyst jaw, because he obviously does he
- 32:59Speaker 3: has and I just thought it was a natural, you know,
- 33:03Speaker 3: a natural fit.
- 33:04Speaker 2: But by the way, together, when you were a sports director,
- 33:08Speaker 2: you got US Ranger hockey a couple of games here.
- 33:11Speaker 1: On the s for Es and Grecor was involved.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Yes, he was a couple of times there. So good selling.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's good for him, so congratulations.
- 33:23Speaker 2: The other news and notes I'm thinking about is the
- 33:26Speaker 2: Mavericks shutting down Cooper Flag. Should we worry about that
- 33:30Speaker 2: middle of July or no?
- 33:31Speaker 3: Right? No, no, no, no, I mean, obvi scored thirty
- 33:35Speaker 3: one points the other night.
- 33:38Speaker 1: He's eighteen and a half years old. He's not injured
- 33:44Speaker 1: in any way.
- 33:45Speaker 2: I will tell you, I think the media is on
- 33:47Speaker 2: this summer league for the Knicks because of Mike Brown's
- 33:50Speaker 2: for summer league. I mean, I don't really care. Although
- 33:52Speaker 2: I did see they had ten turnovers the first game
- 33:55Speaker 2: in the first quarter or something. I don't know if
- 33:57Speaker 2: that mattered.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it.
- 34:00Speaker 3: They're just looking at the guys individually. You see if
- 34:03Speaker 3: they have any talent and where they can utilize their talent.
- 34:07Speaker 2: And one last thing, We're almost there, as Scott Scott
- 34:12Speaker 2: Hanson said, we're about eight. I knocked the box away
- 34:16Speaker 2: from an NFL red zone. We're almost there.
- 34:19Speaker 1: We're almost there. Jets.
- 34:21Speaker 3: Jets training camp starts jen July twenty second next week,
- 34:27Speaker 3: and a Rod.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Is going to be in Pittsburgh. You can't make any
- 34:30Speaker 2: of this up. You really cannot make any of this up.
- 34:33Speaker 2: You're right, we'll see. I think Tomlin this is a
- 34:37Speaker 2: good shot for him to work with with Rogers, and
- 34:40Speaker 2: it might be his last team. I don't know yet.
- 34:41Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Yeah, well Rogers said that this is probably his last year,
- 34:47Speaker 3: so and he respects Tomlin. We'll see what happens, Alex.
- 34:52Speaker 3: They're in a tough division. I mean, it's I don't
- 34:56Speaker 3: know where they going to be.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Room for the Browns that same division. Five guys I've
- 35:02Speaker 2: never seen a quarterback room so filmed.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Right, No, you're right, So I wonder how many are
- 35:07Speaker 3: going to be there on September seventh when the season opens.
- 35:10Speaker 2: But on Cleveland, I'm worried about DeShawn taking Dion Sanders'
- 35:14Speaker 2: kid under his wing.
- 35:16Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, I would be too.
- 35:19Speaker 2: A little nervous there. But we won't go there. I guess.
- 35:22Speaker 2: I just hope they don't go to any massage pars.
- 35:24Speaker 2: That's all.
- 35:25Speaker 1: That's it.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Well, Lou, this has been a blast. I really want
- 35:29Speaker 2: to know what your favorite All Star game, since it's
- 35:32Speaker 2: All Star Game week, your favorite one to watch? Though?
- 35:36Speaker 3: My favorite one, I mean is a famous one. It
- 35:40Speaker 3: is the nineteen seventy All Star Game where where Pete
- 35:47Speaker 3: Rose bowled over Ray Fosse and not because Force got injured,
- 35:54Speaker 3: and that was I wasn't a Reds fan.
- 35:57Speaker 1: It was the competition, the lead. None of these guys
- 36:01Speaker 1: have lead pride.
- 36:01Speaker 3: None of the guys are going to see themor and
- 36:03Speaker 3: Night have lead pride because guys playing both leagues. Now,
- 36:07Speaker 3: in those days it didn't happen as frequently as in
- 36:12Speaker 3: the past. The National League was down four to one
- 36:17Speaker 3: bomb ninth inning at Riverfront Stadium, they tied the game
- 36:22Speaker 3: four to four, and then in the bottom of I
- 36:27Speaker 3: think it was the twelfth inning where Pete Rose was
- 36:30Speaker 3: on second base and Jim Hickman, a former original met
- 36:35Speaker 3: of the sixty two Expansion Mets playing for your dad's
- 36:38Speaker 3: Chicago Cubs, single to center field off California Angel right
- 36:44Speaker 3: hand to Clyde Wright, and then the rest is history.
- 36:48Speaker 3: I could still see Leo du Rocha, the third base
- 36:51Speaker 3: coach of the National League, wind milling Rose to home
- 36:54Speaker 3: and bowling over FOSSi to win the game, and the
- 36:59Speaker 3: whole nationally dugout exploded because in those days, that's what
- 37:03Speaker 3: they did. Alex Frank Robinson didn't talk to the you know,
- 37:09Speaker 3: he didn't talk to those guys on the American.
- 37:11Speaker 2: It also wasn't and I you know, I have to
- 37:13Speaker 2: say this, it wasn't a bunch of guys with millions
- 37:15Speaker 2: of dollar contracts.
- 37:16Speaker 1: And right, that's correct.
- 37:19Speaker 3: Remember the minimum salary in Major League Baseball I think
- 37:22Speaker 3: until nineteen sixty seven was seventy five hundred dollars.
- 37:26Speaker 1: I might be off on a year or two one.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Half, and so they never complained. They just kept playing ball. Look, yeah,
- 37:33Speaker 2: Yogi never complained on a contract that I could tell
- 37:35Speaker 2: he always played ball and played hard and now got
- 37:37Speaker 2: to you got ten rings out of it, right.
- 37:39Speaker 1: And times are different. But what the thing?
- 37:42Speaker 3: That the thing that sometimes it doesn't bother me, but
- 37:48Speaker 3: these guys go making all this money, don't realize what
- 37:52Speaker 3: those guys did to lay the groundwork for them today.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Absolutely, And I will say that's why I honored George
- 37:58Speaker 2: Seinberner's passing and his birthday every year because they actually
- 38:02Speaker 2: are eleven days apart, which is or a few days apart,
- 38:04Speaker 2: which is hard to believe. But you know, I think
- 38:07Speaker 2: about these days because a of the impact he had
- 38:09Speaker 2: on me, but also it's getting lost all of these
- 38:12Speaker 2: historical people and historical you know, people that laid the
- 38:16Speaker 2: groundwork are being lost in transition.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Here, you're correct, and we can go down any sport.
- 38:22Speaker 3: We could talk about this for the next downur and
- 38:24Speaker 3: we could break down each individual's sport and go over that.
- 38:27Speaker 1: And those guys, those guys don't know what that is.
- 38:29Speaker 2: That is the New York Posts, Mount Rushmore, and basketball
- 38:33Speaker 2: doesn't or whoever doesn't include Wilt Chamberlain. I mean, come on,
- 38:36Speaker 2: that guy changed the game. They made rules because of him.
- 38:40Speaker 1: That's correct.
- 38:41Speaker 3: When the change the rules because of one guy, they
- 38:44Speaker 3: wden the lane because of him. The three second lane
- 38:48Speaker 3: used to be much skinnier than it was. It became
- 38:51Speaker 3: wider because of Chamberlain.
- 38:53Speaker 1: You're right, but we can.
- 38:56Speaker 3: One of these days we'll do our I'm not big
- 38:58Speaker 3: as you know on list and Mountain us More, but
- 39:00Speaker 3: just for conversation, we should do we should do that.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Uh, he's around here and and and and overall.
- 39:08Speaker 2: For the hockey fans out there, sorry this show, Richter,
- 39:11Speaker 2: For the Ranger fans who love this show, I still
- 39:13Speaker 2: got to say, and the hockey fans, Richter should have
- 39:16Speaker 2: been on that Mount Rushmore for New York Post. It's
- 39:18Speaker 2: a disgrace he wasn't.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Even though I'm not a Ranger guy, I'm a big
- 39:22Speaker 1: Richter guy. I think he was. I think Mike Mike
- 39:25Speaker 1: Richter is one of the most underrated players.
- 39:27Speaker 3: And uh, everybody forgets in Game six at the Meadowlands,
- 39:32Speaker 3: when Messier predicted that they would beat the Devils that night,
- 39:36Speaker 3: and they did and he got the hat trick. The
- 39:39Speaker 3: only reason he had an opportunity to get the hat
- 39:40Speaker 3: trick is because when the Devils were up to nothing,
- 39:43Speaker 3: and it wasn't for Richter, the Devils would have been
- 39:45Speaker 3: up five nothing or six nothing.
- 39:47Speaker 1: That's how good Mike Richter was. And he's underrated.
- 39:50Speaker 3: He's a vastly underrated, underrated uh Ranger in my opinion.
- 39:55Speaker 3: And like I said, I I don't even like the Rangers,
- 39:57Speaker 3: but I will always be fair and object.
- 40:01Speaker 2: There you go, he's a great blue Terminello. I guess
- 40:05Speaker 2: this weekend one last thing, the Fever World Cup was
- 40:07Speaker 2: like a gold Cup, was just a precursor to next
- 40:10Speaker 2: year because it's gonna be back at my life in
- 40:12Speaker 2: honor of America to fifty.
- 40:13Speaker 1: So correct.
- 40:15Speaker 3: Yeah, so I was surprised at the revised Club Cup
- 40:20Speaker 3: Championship as as a tournament went on, became more and
- 40:25Speaker 3: more interesting and and uh uh it was well attended
- 40:30Speaker 3: as the as the month long tournament went on, they
- 40:34Speaker 3: played way too many games, these individual teams in soccer.
- 40:37Speaker 3: I think Chelsea and PSG. Yes, they they were. They
- 40:40Speaker 3: were over sixty five since last August. You know, you
- 40:43Speaker 3: talked about player safety. That's not that's not carrying out
- 40:48Speaker 3: player safety. But no, next next summer, the World Cup
- 40:53Speaker 3: will be I.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Think the US has a really good chance of being
- 40:56Speaker 2: competitive and I don't know.
- 40:57Speaker 1: I hope, I really do.
- 40:59Speaker 2: They looked pretty good this year, so we'll see.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Yeah, losing to their big rival Mexico is disappointing, but
- 41:07Speaker 3: you know, we'll see what happens.
- 41:09Speaker 2: Blue Terminilo Terminelo's take as always this All Star Game week,
- 41:12Speaker 2: thanks for kicking off here at One Leg Up.
- 41:16Speaker 1: It's my pleasure, Alex, thank you very much.
- 41:19Speaker 2: I want to say thank you for encouraging me to
- 41:21Speaker 2: do this idea spark campaign that's happening Wednesday, Pitch Best.
- 41:24Speaker 2: We're going to get there, Louis.
- 41:26Speaker 1: I wish you the best of luck. You know that
- 41:28Speaker 1: nothing would make me happier.
- 41:29Speaker 2: All right, Loud, talk to you soon. Thanks again, God
- 41:32Speaker 2: bless take care,
