- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites, the podcast from the Volume podcast Network.
- 0:15Speaker 1: It's Thursday. That means it's time to enter the Thursday Thunderdome,
- 0:21Speaker 1: and somehow we've we've convinced another real professional outside of
- 0:25Speaker 1: the Action Network to join us. On today's show, our
- 0:29Speaker 1: special guests will compete alongside my co host, my companion,
- 0:33Speaker 1: my BFF professional sports better Simon Hunter, in an epic
- 0:37Speaker 1: test of wagers and wits that's made this show the
- 0:39Speaker 1: most celebrated sports betting adjacent trivia show in podcast history,
- 0:45Speaker 1: and true to form because it's Draft Day at any moment,
- 0:49Speaker 1: Simon Hunter has already warned us that his bat phone
- 0:51Speaker 1: may ring and he may have to step out of
- 0:53Speaker 1: the game to make some very big bets. Hello Simon,
- 0:58Speaker 1: Hello Chad. Yes, it's only one of three days I
- 1:01Speaker 1: consider actual work days for the entire off season, so
- 1:04Speaker 1: I've been getting phone calls I would say since three
- 1:06Speaker 1: in the morning, because that's midnight Vegas. I probably I'm
- 1:09Speaker 1: probably running on four hours of sleep and a lot
- 1:11Speaker 1: of energy drinks, so I'm kind of like losing my mind.
- 1:14Speaker 1: But it's a fun day. When Matt goes number three
- 1:18Speaker 1: the San Francisco to the forty nine. I'm just gonna
- 1:20Speaker 1: walk into the ocean. I cannot wait for this day
- 1:23Speaker 1: to view over my man. Listen, I'm hoping. I'm hoping
- 1:25Speaker 1: you win this bet. Obviously you have a massive bet
- 1:27Speaker 1: on Mac Jones to Napia number three. I'm hoping that
- 1:30Speaker 1: you're right and hoping you win. I think Mac Jones
- 1:32Speaker 1: number three terrible idea. Simon. Today you'll face two guest challengers.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And for our listeners, if you're a baseball fan, of
- 1:40Speaker 1: baseball better a regular old Chicago in you definitely listened
- 1:45Speaker 1: to the dulcet tones of our first guest. He's the
- 1:48Speaker 1: television play by playboys for the Chicago White Sox. You
- 1:51Speaker 1: have heard him on ESPN's MLB Stack Cast, which to me,
- 1:56Speaker 1: the absolute best play by blay experience on the Worldwide Leader.
- 2:00Speaker 1: You've also heard him in various college football basketball games
- 2:02Speaker 1: for ESPN, whereas he he has had the pleasure of
- 2:05Speaker 1: ad libbing alongside Bill Walton, which is the second best
- 2:09Speaker 1: play by play experience on the Worldwide Leader. There is
- 2:12Speaker 1: no offseason for this man. The hardest working man on
- 2:14Speaker 1: the South Side. Jason Bennetti, Jason, how are you man?
- 2:19Speaker 1: I'm great. I'm great. I just wish I had a
- 2:21Speaker 1: bad phone like Simon, but I appreciate that very kind intro,
- 2:25Speaker 1: and I am ready to go. You describe me earlier
- 2:27Speaker 1: as an actual professional joining the show, so I have
- 2:30Speaker 1: no idea what sort of dunk tank I've sat in,
- 2:33Speaker 1: but I'm very excited. I really hope that you continue
- 2:36Speaker 1: to want to communicate with me after this is over,
- 2:38Speaker 1: Honest to god, Like, if anybody hasn't watched the MLB
- 2:42Speaker 1: stadcast on ESPN, it is unbelievable. I will say this.
- 2:47Speaker 1: It's gonna sound obnoxiously when I say this. Obviously, I've
- 2:49Speaker 1: been at ESPN for a long time. Jason and I
- 2:51Speaker 1: never interacted at ESPN. I connected with him after watching
- 2:56Speaker 1: him perform so brilliantly in a Bulls prec is in
- 3:00Speaker 1: game with Stacy King. He was so good and it
- 3:04Speaker 1: was such an enjoyable experience. I had to email him
- 3:06Speaker 1: and tell him. Also after the stack cast in two
- 3:08Speaker 1: thousand eight team when he premiered, I emailed the guy
- 3:11Speaker 1: who runs baseball coverage from ESPN and I was like, dude,
- 3:14Speaker 1: this is ridiculous. This should just be what you're doing
- 3:17Speaker 1: every single game. It's amazing. So everyone go listen to
- 3:20Speaker 1: Jason on the stack Cast, or just get MLB dot
- 3:23Speaker 1: tv and listen to the White Sox games. Our second
- 3:26Speaker 1: guest one of our newest members at the Action Network,
- 3:28Speaker 1: arriving from the New York Post, where she ran analytics
- 3:31Speaker 1: and then she was so good at creating content as
- 3:34Speaker 1: a side hustle we hired at full time. She's a
- 3:37Speaker 1: data maven, a celebrated woman of TikTok, an esteemed NFL
- 3:41Speaker 1: fantasy expert. Samantha Prividi, what's going on? I think you
- 3:45Speaker 1: just spoke higher of me than like my own mother would,
- 3:48Speaker 1: So I love that intro. I am a big fan
- 3:50Speaker 1: of everyone at Action Network, and everyone knows that I
- 3:53Speaker 1: usually like people at Action Network more than the people
- 3:55Speaker 1: in my own family. So um, they're near and dear
- 3:59Speaker 1: to my heart. He got a big, big game today.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Here's how the game is played today. You'll answer two
- 4:05Speaker 1: kinds of questions. First, traditional trivia questions about sports, sports, betting,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and the world at large. Second, completely subjective, totally assinine,
- 4:16Speaker 1: open ended questions or prompts that I alone will judge.
- 4:19Speaker 1: And a reminder, as always, because Simon is my best friend,
- 4:23Speaker 1: because I love him dearly. Because I only root for him,
- 4:26Speaker 1: I'm probably gonna try to find a way to make
- 4:28Speaker 1: sure that he wins those questions. Yeah, yeah, you didn't
- 4:34Speaker 1: know that was part of the game, but that is.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I'm hyper competitive and I think the loaded dice and
- 4:38Speaker 1: I don't appreciate it. If I'm gonna play it, I'm
- 4:40Speaker 1: gonna dry it. Guess what you got a shot? Make
- 4:43Speaker 1: your answers great? Simon has yet to win in the
- 4:46Speaker 1: six weeks we've been in the game. He has yet
- 4:48Speaker 1: to win. How bad at the game. If you're trying
- 4:51Speaker 1: to get him to win any camped let's see what happens.
- 4:53Speaker 1: How dare you? How dare you? How dare I? Listen?
- 4:57Speaker 1: I'm a big fan of yours too. I think you
- 4:58Speaker 1: got a shot to relate points. You must answer the
- 5:01Speaker 1: trivia questions correctly and also convince me that your responses
- 5:05Speaker 1: to those open ended prompts are better than the responses
- 5:08Speaker 1: from your opponents, because, just like sports betting, you can't
- 5:12Speaker 1: get them all. Right, we will begin part one. Let's
- 5:16Speaker 1: get drafting. As every sports fan in America is aware,
- 5:20Speaker 1: tonight is the first round of the NFL. Drafted is Thursday,
- 5:23Speaker 1: but it's only one of the many kind of drafts
- 5:26Speaker 1: worth talking about. To decide who the true draft master
- 5:31Speaker 1: here is, I'll ask each of you two questions, one
- 5:34Speaker 1: about the NFL draft and one about another kind of draft,
- 5:39Speaker 1: any kind of draft. Let's get started, Samantha Europe First,
- 5:43Speaker 1: here's your NFL draft question. In two thousand nine, sports
- 5:48Speaker 1: books offered NFL draft gamblers a juicy first round prop
- 5:54Speaker 1: under three and a half qbs taken in the first
- 5:56Speaker 1: round cashed as a plus two shot. Kyler Murray, Daniel Jones,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and Dwayne Haskins all went in the first round, but
- 6:07Speaker 1: this SEC quarterback slipped to the second round. The same
- 6:12Speaker 1: guy who led the league in interceptions last year. He
- 6:17Speaker 1: was a starter for a team in the a f
- 6:19Speaker 1: C that was one of the most heartbreaking, frustrating teams
- 6:24Speaker 1: to bet on last year. Frustrating team to bet on.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I mean, that literally makes me any of the Chargers,
- 6:31Speaker 1: But obviously that's not the answer. I have no idea.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Drew a lock. Every better knows that he was one
- 6:38Speaker 1: of those quarterbacks that would completely break your heart. Simon
- 6:41Speaker 1: and I both one and lost many many dollars, and
- 6:44Speaker 1: it might have kept us out from finishing in the
- 6:46Speaker 1: top twenty in the contest we were in last year. Samantha,
- 6:50Speaker 1: here is your other draft question. A drafty house is
- 6:54Speaker 1: a pain in the ask for many homeowners, and while
- 6:56Speaker 1: most assumed windows or HVAC or the lane, the most
- 7:01Speaker 1: common reason for a draft is this effect, named after
- 7:05Speaker 1: quote a space devoid of matter. It's also the name
- 7:10Speaker 1: of a common household item that you may use to
- 7:14Speaker 1: pick up dirt from your carpets and rugs. Vacuum. Well done. Simon.
- 7:22Speaker 1: ESPN sent to camera to the house of this Oklahoma
- 7:25Speaker 1: State running back and assumed first round pick, but an
- 7:28Speaker 1: old knee injury spooked several interested teams, and ESPN showed
- 7:33Speaker 1: him asleep on his couch shortly before Buffalo drafted him
- 7:37Speaker 1: in the middle of the second round. Don't give me
- 7:39Speaker 1: your bullshit. I was born in I'm not I'm not
- 7:42Speaker 1: hearing it went to Buffalo. No idea, dude, I was
- 7:49Speaker 1: gonna I'm not even giving you clues. You don't deserve
- 7:51Speaker 1: to get this right. Thumman Thomas, Oklahoma State. Come on, Simon,
- 7:56Speaker 1: the most expensive antique book ever sold is just a
- 8:01Speaker 1: first draft. It's not even the final manuscript. It's the
- 8:06Speaker 1: original eighteen thirty printers draft of this religious text, which
- 8:13Speaker 1: shares the title with one of the most successful musicals
- 8:17Speaker 1: in Broadway history, Book of Mormon. Hello, my name is
- 8:23Speaker 1: Elder Smith, and can I leave this book with you
- 8:26Speaker 1: for you to just peruve. I'll just leave it here.
- 8:30Speaker 1: It has a lot of information you can really use.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Bing you got it right, all right, Let's see what
- 8:37Speaker 1: Jason can do. Jason, this question celebrates your status as
- 8:41Speaker 1: a proud Syracuse alone. Since Donovan McNabb went second overall
- 8:46Speaker 1: in the Orange Men have had five players taken in
- 8:51Speaker 1: the first round of the NFL draft. Standing above the
- 8:54Speaker 1: rest are these two defensive stars and Super Bowl champions
- 8:59Speaker 1: who led the league in sacks in two thousand four
- 9:02Speaker 1: and two thousand seventeen, respectively. They are uh Dwight Breeney
- 9:07Speaker 1: is one of them, and I'm going to say I
- 9:10Speaker 1: believe the other one is Chandler Jones. Wow, nailed it.
- 9:19Speaker 1: That was really well done. I will also tell you
- 9:21Speaker 1: that one time I was having a chat with our
- 9:24Speaker 1: head of video. Her name is Christina Ventura, and she
- 9:27Speaker 1: was describing her favorite professor at Syracuse and then when
- 9:30Speaker 1: I said, oh, what's his name? Her answer was Jason Bennetti. Wow,
- 9:35Speaker 1: those bribes do work, they do, they really do well.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Let's see maybe that can help you win the game today, Jason.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Military conscription, more commonly referred to as the draft, has
- 9:47Speaker 1: been employed during six conflicts in American history. They are,
- 9:51Speaker 1: in order, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War One,
- 9:56Speaker 1: World War Two, and these two other con flicks name them.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I mean, I have to assume, based on the timeline
- 10:05Speaker 1: that it's the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. I
- 10:08Speaker 1: don't think the Gulf War involved the draft. It didn't.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I'll give you a hint. It was the basis for
- 10:16Speaker 1: an incredibly popular sitcom that ran in the seventies. It's
- 10:22Speaker 1: the Korean War. The Korean War. Jeez, come on, I'm
- 10:27Speaker 1: giving it to you. Thank you. That's how we play
- 10:29Speaker 1: the game here. See, everybody gets everyone gets a little
- 10:31Speaker 1: help sometimes. All right, here's the prompt. During the two
- 10:34Speaker 1: thousand and ten NFL draft, Gerald McCoy bear hugged Commissioner
- 10:40Speaker 1: Roger Goodell on stage after being taken third overall, and
- 10:44Speaker 1: ever since, a bear hug and a private exchange of
- 10:48Speaker 1: words has become Roger Goodell's on stage tradition. With first
- 10:52Speaker 1: round picks. Let's imagine you are a first round pick
- 10:55Speaker 1: this season after the Hug, what would you want to
- 10:59Speaker 1: whisper to Roger Goodell? For example, here, Roger, I know
- 11:03Speaker 1: we're not supposed to bet on NFL games, but how
- 11:06Speaker 1: about just over unders simon Europe First? The first thing
- 11:10Speaker 1: I would whisper into his ear would be, Roger, I
- 11:13Speaker 1: know you have the tapes of the New England Patriots
- 11:15Speaker 1: videotaping the Eagles before the Super Bowl. I need to
- 11:18Speaker 1: see those tapes. That would be the first thing I'd
- 11:21Speaker 1: say to him if I had got to get close
- 11:23Speaker 1: enough to Roger Goodell, because as a kid, my god man,
- 11:26Speaker 1: that was probably my most painful Eagles memory was Donovan
- 11:31Speaker 1: McNatt puking in the huddle and I was just as
- 11:34Speaker 1: a kid, I was just like, Okay, this game is over.
- 11:36Speaker 1: So I would definitely asking if we got cheated, because
- 11:39Speaker 1: I think it was the next year the whole spy
- 11:40Speaker 1: gate thing came out, So as a Bidder's Eagles fan,
- 11:44Speaker 1: that's the first question i'd have to ask. I think
- 11:46Speaker 1: that's totally fair, totally totally fair, and I'd love to
- 11:49Speaker 1: see how he responds and be like in one of
- 11:51Speaker 1: those movies where someone leans in and gives you very
- 11:56Speaker 1: very challenging information that would scare here your death, but
- 12:00Speaker 1: you cannot react other than hey, it's great to see you. Yeah.
- 12:04Speaker 1: All of a sudden, I think someone just come on
- 12:06Speaker 1: the stage on Blackhood would just go over top my
- 12:07Speaker 1: head and I would just get ushered on what. So
- 12:09Speaker 1: that's how I visioned Rocker Goodell handling it entirely possible. Jason,
- 12:14Speaker 1: you're up next? What is your response? So I'd find
- 12:17Speaker 1: out what Roger Goodell's favorite comedy movie is and try
- 12:21Speaker 1: and get him to break, and like, lean in and
- 12:23Speaker 1: say Mark twice. If you're in Milwaukee, Hello, who's there?
- 12:27Speaker 1: I'm talking you can get him to totally break at
- 12:31Speaker 1: an inappropriate time. I don't mind that either. And I
- 12:34Speaker 1: like that you're bringing comedy into it, and I like
- 12:36Speaker 1: that you're mentioning Milwaukee. It's almost as if you were
- 12:39Speaker 1: pandering to our podcast producer Matt Mitchell, who was in
- 12:43Speaker 1: a basement in Milwaukee. That's his own fault. I would
- 12:46Speaker 1: never I would never pander to a basement in Milwaukee.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Do you have any idea how disrespectful that is? Samantha,
- 12:55Speaker 1: You're up next, I would probably ask why I'm roughing
- 12:59Speaker 1: the past. Their penalties are not reviewable since there were
- 13:02Speaker 1: so many incregious funds last season. So uh yeah, I
- 13:07Speaker 1: like that one too, because it's practical that or something
- 13:10Speaker 1: like what do you think of Mark Davis's haircut? I
- 13:13Speaker 1: don't know. Oh see that. I gotta think for a second,
- 13:16Speaker 1: cause I might have to give you credit for that one,
- 13:18Speaker 1: because I think he would totally break out laughing at that.
- 13:23Speaker 1: I'm giving it to Samantha. Samantha Roger Goodell having to
- 13:27Speaker 1: think about Mark Davis's haircut and then having to respond
- 13:30Speaker 1: without actually having to insult one of his bosses. Big bing,
- 13:33Speaker 1: bing bing bang. You are the winner of the first prompt.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Very nicely done. Way to pull it out. Totally pulled
- 13:41Speaker 1: it out because at first you went way too practical
- 13:43Speaker 1: hard too. Saturday is the one and forty seventh running
- 13:47Speaker 1: of the Kentucky Derby, one of the most celebrated days
- 13:50Speaker 1: of the sports betting calendar ring. So let's see what
- 13:58Speaker 1: you know, Samantha. While the fields are typically dominated by
- 14:03Speaker 1: male horses, three Phillies have won the Kentucky Derby, and
- 14:07Speaker 1: all three Phillies had names Taylor made for gamblers. In
- 14:12Speaker 1: the nineteen eighties it was winning colors and genuine risk,
- 14:16Speaker 1: and in nineteen fifteen it was this horse named after
- 14:22Speaker 1: something any sports better can relate to, defined as a
- 14:28Speaker 1: feeling of sadness, repentance, or disappointment. That would be something
- 14:35Speaker 1: I really I don't know English, sorry, regret okay, and
- 14:43Speaker 1: right now that's exactly what you're feeling. Every gambler knows
- 14:47Speaker 1: that feeling that regret. Jason embarrassed a little bit of
- 14:54Speaker 1: embarrassments here, Jason. Before COVID delayed the Kentucky Derby to
- 14:59Speaker 1: September next year. The Derby had been delayed just once before,
- 15:03Speaker 1: back in ninety in response to World War Two, but
- 15:07Speaker 1: a race still took place in Louisville on Derby Day,
- 15:11Speaker 1: with horses replaced by these leisurely reptiles. As a degenerate
- 15:18Speaker 1: crowd of more than six people bet more than eleven
- 15:25Speaker 1: thousand dollars on the proceedings. Leisurely, slow moving reptiles were
- 15:32Speaker 1: the animals that raced. So I would say, uh, slugs, wizards, alligators, kangaroos.
- 15:46Speaker 1: It's turtle, right, it's turtles. How did I not know that?
- 15:53Speaker 1: That's It's like they are the exact thing you think
- 15:57Speaker 1: about when something is slow. Was it reptiles? That that
- 16:00Speaker 1: screwed you up? But I know what screwed me up
- 16:03Speaker 1: is I'm an idiot. Sometimes three days later h V
- 16:09Speaker 1: E Day ended the war in Europe and they ran
- 16:13Speaker 1: an official normal Kentucky Derby four weeks after that. Thank you.
- 16:19Speaker 1: That's good trivia, right that? Yeah? Uh Simon. Those attending
- 16:24Speaker 1: the Derby are known to wear ostentatious hats because the
- 16:28Speaker 1: derby's founder wanted to emulate high class European racist like
- 16:33Speaker 1: England's Grand National. The Grand National is the most famous
- 16:38Speaker 1: of this type of horse race, originally run between two churches.
- 16:46Speaker 1: You will never get this, Yeah, no way, the Cambridge
- 16:49Speaker 1: Race a church has what a top? It's building a chapel.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Deep steeple chase steeple. We are going into the prompt
- 17:03Speaker 1: for part two. The Kentucky Derby is known as the
- 17:06Speaker 1: most exciting two minutes in sports. Your task is to
- 17:11Speaker 1: sell me on the least exciting two minutes in sports.
- 17:15Speaker 1: For example, a call to the bullpen in the middle
- 17:20Speaker 1: of an MLB blowout is pretty unexciting. Jason, your first,
- 17:25Speaker 1: but I will tell you this for extra credit, because
- 17:28Speaker 1: I've seen you offer this to people on Twitter. If
- 17:31Speaker 1: you wanted to give your answer as you would call
- 17:34Speaker 1: it in a game, I will give you extra credit.
- 17:37Speaker 1: You want to tell you what it is and then
- 17:38Speaker 1: call it, or just call it, I would say just
- 17:40Speaker 1: call it. Okay. So here's Jones on the Mount Garcia
- 17:44Speaker 1: the plate, thinking about bunting infield, playing in and Jones
- 17:48Speaker 1: throws to first. Anderson didn't even move. It was on
- 17:52Speaker 1: the bag. But Jones is worried about the runner going
- 17:55Speaker 1: because of the bunt. Said, now Jones in the set
- 17:58Speaker 1: and another throat of birds. Anderson was one step off
- 18:02Speaker 1: the bag that time. All right, Jones on all on
- 18:05Speaker 1: one and he's gonna throw it first again. And the
- 18:08Speaker 1: crowd does not like this. So now all right, we're
- 18:11Speaker 1: ready all on one another throat at first, let stemp
- 18:16Speaker 1: off the bag. It's not even about him, it's about
- 18:20Speaker 1: what the bunter is going to do to move him
- 18:23Speaker 1: to say. He didn't even want to throw him out
- 18:25Speaker 1: at first. He just wants to keep him close to
- 18:27Speaker 1: the base. As I was describing it to you, I
- 18:31Speaker 1: was cutting pieces of it out because it was too boring.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Oh my God, that was brilliant, totally totally brilliant. And
- 18:39Speaker 1: by the way, you're right, that was dreadfully, dreadfully boring,
- 18:44Speaker 1: but incredibly entertaining and well done. Samantha. Give me your
- 18:48Speaker 1: least exciting two minutes in sports. I think you should
- 18:52Speaker 1: just give it to Jason. That was epic. But um,
- 18:55Speaker 1: maybe a time out in a game between the Jet
- 19:00Speaker 1: some Giants, which I guess it's called like the Snoop
- 19:02Speaker 1: Peo Bowl, but I'm gonna call it the toilet Bowl
- 19:04Speaker 1: because usually last place teams um time out that they're
- 19:09Speaker 1: forced to call because they were about to get a
- 19:12Speaker 1: delay of game penalty. So very boring two minutes. That
- 19:16Speaker 1: is actually pretty dreadful. A time out in a bad
- 19:19Speaker 1: game because the team is so bad they couldn't get
- 19:23Speaker 1: the play off in time. Now, if you've been able
- 19:26Speaker 1: to call that for two minutes, that would be even better. Simon,
- 19:29Speaker 1: what's yours? This is always good. Yeah, it's never given
- 19:33Speaker 1: me anywhere near as good as Jason's. That was amazing.
- 19:34Speaker 1: I do want to say that the Kentucky Derby we
- 19:37Speaker 1: are one of the biggest shows in the world. Chat
- 19:38Speaker 1: Hopefully these people listen to this show. They have to
- 19:41Speaker 1: move off draft weekend. I love Kentucky Derby as a degenerate,
- 19:44Speaker 1: I love betting it, and I love the whole weekend
- 19:46Speaker 1: of betting the draft and Kentucky Derby, but it's been
- 19:49Speaker 1: lost in the shuffle, Like I just remember always hearing
- 19:52Speaker 1: about it a week or two leading up to it,
- 19:54Speaker 1: and I need them to move to another weekend because
- 19:56Speaker 1: I love as a gambler, I love betting Kentucky Derby,
- 19:58Speaker 1: So please Kentucky, every people, move it another weekend. For
- 20:02Speaker 1: my worst or at least exciting two minutes, it has
- 20:05Speaker 1: to be when in any sport, when they review a
- 20:07Speaker 1: call that we all know the already the outcome of it,
- 20:11Speaker 1: and then they don't review the calls. We have no idea.
- 20:13Speaker 1: So the least exciting ever has to be those two
- 20:17Speaker 1: to three minutes where they go to that black box
- 20:18Speaker 1: the reviewing a play that all the fans already know.
- 20:21Speaker 1: So I know I'm gonna lose because Jason's was incredible,
- 20:24Speaker 1: But to me, the least exciting two minutes that has
- 20:25Speaker 1: to be yet, Yeah, Jason's is so good that Matt
- 20:29Speaker 1: Mitchell is updating the scores in real time and he's
- 20:32Speaker 1: already given Jason a point, even though I haven't actually
- 20:35Speaker 1: awarded Jason the actual point. Of course, Jason is going
- 20:38Speaker 1: to get the point. Simon, I feel like you should
- 20:41Speaker 1: get a negative half point just for going on a
- 20:44Speaker 1: rant about the Kentucky Derby to delay having to give
- 20:47Speaker 1: your answer because you didn't want to lose to Jason.
- 20:49Speaker 1: That's that's how That's how much I think about your answer.
- 20:52Speaker 1: But I do think the flip side is you're completely
- 20:55Speaker 1: right and the Kentucky Derby. I had to do a
- 20:57Speaker 1: couple of radio shows this morning and people were asked
- 21:00Speaker 1: me about what I thought of the Derby, and I said,
- 21:02Speaker 1: the Derby could not be less relevant right now because
- 21:04Speaker 1: the only thing anyone who's talking about is who's going
- 21:07Speaker 1: to go number three? Because that there is an historic
- 21:10Speaker 1: amount of money being trafficked in bets on the number
- 21:13Speaker 1: three pick right now. So I agree with your premise.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Jason gets the point right now. As we head into
- 21:19Speaker 1: part three, Jason uber competitive Jason Bennetti. He has three points,
- 21:24Speaker 1: Samantha has two points. Simon, you're bringing up the room
- 21:27Speaker 1: in one point, given given how things are going, Really
- 21:30Speaker 1: hope Mac Jones doesn't get drafted a number three. Alright,
- 21:33Speaker 1: let's go to part three. Let's get motivated. One of
- 21:38Speaker 1: the most enduring aspects of sports culture are the insane
- 21:42Speaker 1: lengths players and coaches will go to in order to
- 21:45Speaker 1: motivate themselves and their teams. As long as it works,
- 21:49Speaker 1: nothing is too crazy, Simon. To tip off the season,
- 21:55Speaker 1: the Indiana Hoosiers, my alma mater the year that I graduated,
- 21:59Speaker 1: law us to Butler as huge favorites. Then at practice,
- 22:04Speaker 1: Whosier's coach, master motivator and certified and sane person, Bobby Knight,
- 22:09Speaker 1: brought a shotgun to practice. Makes total sense. He lined
- 22:13Speaker 1: up all the players and brandishing the weapons, said if
- 22:15Speaker 1: they ever played like they did against Butler, quote, I've
- 22:19Speaker 1: got a bullet for every one of you. It's a
- 22:22Speaker 1: wonder this guy ended up getting fired the way he
- 22:26Speaker 1: did threatening to murder all his players proved effective, though.
- 22:29Speaker 1: In the next game, the Hoosier's upset top ranked Kentucky
- 22:33Speaker 1: lead at the time by this famous head coach who
- 22:35Speaker 1: would go on to win two n C Double A Championships,
- 22:38Speaker 1: one at Kentucky one at Louisville that would later be vacated.
- 22:43Speaker 1: So who was the coach after all? The preamble, who
- 22:46Speaker 1: was the coach at Kentucky who eventually won a title
- 22:51Speaker 1: there and then one another one at Louisville. Embarrassed because
- 22:55Speaker 1: I know I know all about this guy, simply the fact,
- 22:57Speaker 1: because he cheated on his wife for that woman and
- 22:59Speaker 1: was just told disgrace. But that's why I hate Thunderdome.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I can't think of it. It's like the tip of
- 23:03Speaker 1: my tongue and I can't think of it. He's very slick.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Slick rhymes with his first name. No, I'm never I'm
- 23:11Speaker 1: never gonna get it, the Thunderdoving. I'm just complete blocked off.
- 23:14Speaker 1: It's Rick Pattino. Good forgot. I was gonna say Valentine.
- 23:18Speaker 1: That's all far off, all right, Jason. Every July between
- 23:23Speaker 1: two thousand and one and two thousand ten, American League
- 23:25Speaker 1: All Stars were treated to one of the most revered
- 23:28Speaker 1: and legendary clubhouse spectacles in baseball history. The unhinged, profanity
- 23:33Speaker 1: packed motivational pregame speeches of this one hundred and seventy
- 23:38Speaker 1: five pound outfielder delivered in perfect English without the use
- 23:44Speaker 1: of a translator. Who was this player? Very nicely done? Samantha?
- 23:52Speaker 1: Nine years ago, Roger Goodell delivered his punishments in the
- 23:55Speaker 1: bounty Gate scandal, during which the New Orleans Saints were
- 23:59Speaker 1: accused of using cash bounties to motivate players into injuring
- 24:03Speaker 1: the opposition. Head coach Sean Payton and GM Mickey Loomis
- 24:07Speaker 1: served almost unprecedented suspensions, and the team was fined and
- 24:11Speaker 1: forfeited multiple second round picks. Four players named as ringleaders
- 24:15Speaker 1: avoided serious punishment after their suspensions were overturned on appeal
- 24:20Speaker 1: by this former commissioner. Former NFL commissioner pre Roger Goodell.
- 24:27Speaker 1: I'm so bad at trivia, Like, I'm so useless that
- 24:30Speaker 1: even like team trivia normally I will give extra credit
- 24:36Speaker 1: to Simon or Jason, whoever can say it fastest and
- 24:40Speaker 1: first ready, one to three go? Simon? Did you not know?
- 24:45Speaker 1: Are you on the bath phone? I'm trying to stay
- 24:47Speaker 1: focused here, Chet, What is happening right now? What are
- 24:50Speaker 1: people asking you about? It's not in that I'm getting
- 24:52Speaker 1: info that that whole Mac thing is complete bullshit. So
- 24:55Speaker 1: I just bet even more on Jaden Max. So again
- 24:58Speaker 1: I'm in a hole. Chat two different thing. Well, call
- 25:00Speaker 1: me up and tell me that match stops bullshit and
- 25:02Speaker 1: they've talked to people that he's not even in their
- 25:04Speaker 1: top four. By the way, that would make total sense
- 25:07Speaker 1: to me. It makes no sense that a quarterback who
- 25:10Speaker 1: had one great year with a team that was so
- 25:13Speaker 1: far better than every other team in college football that
- 25:18Speaker 1: when everybody knows, if you're drafting quarterbacks, you want the
- 25:21Speaker 1: guy who's played games. You want to see more tape.
- 25:25Speaker 1: It proves itself out every single time Mac Jones Zach Wilson,
- 25:30Speaker 1: if either of them are drafted in the top three.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Jason can appreciate this there, Mr Trabisky, that's it. Like,
- 25:38Speaker 1: if you are not drafting justin fields in the top
- 25:41Speaker 1: three and you are trying to draft a quarterback, you're
- 25:44Speaker 1: making a monumental mistake. Jason, you do college football, you
- 25:48Speaker 1: follow the stuff. You gotta take on this. I love
- 25:51Speaker 1: Zack Wilson. He's my guy in this draft. Seriously, Yeah,
- 25:55Speaker 1: I love Zach. Spent spent about minutes before a game
- 25:59Speaker 1: talking to him this year, watched a lot of tape
- 26:01Speaker 1: on him. I think he's going to be a star
- 26:03Speaker 1: in the NFL. I really do. I disagree with everything
- 26:07Speaker 1: you're saying. I didn't minutes, but how do you know Chad.
- 26:11Speaker 1: He can, he can be a wonderful guy. Having spent
- 26:14Speaker 1: twenty or thirty minutes with him, I am going on
- 26:16Speaker 1: the history of quarterbacks and what you get when you
- 26:21Speaker 1: get a guy behind an offensive line that is head
- 26:25Speaker 1: and shoulders above every other offensive line. You're playing against
- 26:28Speaker 1: bad competition, and your guiding guy who had one great
- 26:31Speaker 1: year and two years before that that were not so great.
- 26:34Speaker 1: That's my take. I want to do five year anniversary
- 26:37Speaker 1: of this Thunderdome and see where we are on that.
- 26:40Speaker 1: We will cut a clip, we will save it, we
- 26:42Speaker 1: will send it to you. Yes, let's do it all
- 26:45Speaker 1: right here we go to motivate. This is the part
- 26:47Speaker 1: three prompt to motivate the players. At his alma mater.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Last week, Rob Gronkowski caught a ball dropped from the
- 26:54Speaker 1: helicopter hovering six over the Arizona Wildcats football stadium. Now,
- 27:00Speaker 1: imagine your goal was to demotivate your players. So let
- 27:04Speaker 1: the new athlete and create a new stunt. If you
- 27:07Speaker 1: wanted to extinguish your favorite teams burning desire to win,
- 27:11Speaker 1: For example, Texas A and m asking Johnny Menzel to
- 27:15Speaker 1: run a training camp of casino two days would have
- 27:18Speaker 1: the team losing focus in no time, Samantha your first Mmm,
- 27:24Speaker 1: So my favorite team is the Panthers. So maybe sam
- 27:29Speaker 1: Donald trying to get his teammates to learn all the
- 27:32Speaker 1: TikTok dances like the Juju like Corvette Corvette like that
- 27:36Speaker 1: could definitely demotivate some people. Oh my god, that I
- 27:41Speaker 1: have been trying to get my kids do a TikTok
- 27:44Speaker 1: dance with me, I'm not gonna happen, but I feel
- 27:46Speaker 1: like I feel like if I were to do that
- 27:49Speaker 1: for my Action Network colleagues, that would quickly demotivate them
- 27:52Speaker 1: from doing anything. Ever, so I can completely appreciate this, Simon,
- 27:56Speaker 1: can you look up from your phone for two minutes
- 27:58Speaker 1: to answer this question while I try to get down
- 28:01Speaker 1: massive amount of money on Justin Field to go to
- 28:03Speaker 1: the top two. This is from a personal experience. We
- 28:06Speaker 1: had a kid who was running for class president. He
- 28:08Speaker 1: brought in a wooden board and he could not break
- 28:11Speaker 1: the wooden board in front of the whole whole school.
- 28:14Speaker 1: That is just stuck with me for a life. Where
- 28:16Speaker 1: like I'm having a crappy moment where like, you know,
- 28:18Speaker 1: I'm embarrassing myself in front of people. I'm like, at
- 28:20Speaker 1: least I'm not trying to stand there for twenty minutes
- 28:22Speaker 1: breaking this wooden board and it's just silent. And I
- 28:25Speaker 1: think there'd be nothing funnier than, you know, a coach
- 28:27Speaker 1: motivating his team and he's like, we're gonna break through this.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Just like this board. He just keeps punching the board
- 28:32Speaker 1: and it's just not breaking. So I would love for
- 28:34Speaker 1: that to just let my teammates down with, Oh my god,
- 28:37Speaker 1: that is fantastic. For some reason, I keep thinking of
- 28:41Speaker 1: a karate Kid moment where it completely backfires. Silence is
- 28:47Speaker 1: pretty good, Samantha's is pretty good. They're they're gaining on you. Yeah,
- 28:52Speaker 1: I have no chance with this one, But I do
- 28:53Speaker 1: think my first thought was, you bring in Steph Curry.
- 28:57Speaker 1: So say it's a football team, hockey team, whatever. You
- 29:00Speaker 1: bring in Steph Curry and you say, guys, you gotta
- 29:02Speaker 1: beat him in a horse or you practice triple the
- 29:06Speaker 1: time this week. I mean, that's just nasty. That's mean,
- 29:09Speaker 1: that's that's completely mean spirited. Yes, and that's the best
- 29:14Speaker 1: way to demotivate somebody is being completely mean spirited. By
- 29:18Speaker 1: the way, that's also true. Well, I'm gonna say bring
- 29:21Speaker 1: a gun and brand ish it at the wall of players.
- 29:23Speaker 1: But that's already been said somehow, amazingly enough, someone's actually
- 29:29Speaker 1: done that in real life, so you cannot use it.
- 29:33Speaker 1: All right, let me think about this. This is tough.
- 29:35Speaker 1: I think I gotta go with Simon here because the
- 29:38Speaker 1: idea of trying to break the board is just hilariously
- 29:41Speaker 1: funny and sitting there for twenty minutes and not working. Simon,
- 29:45Speaker 1: you win that round. It is time to go on
- 29:48Speaker 1: to our grand finale. Right now. Jason has a commanding lead.
- 29:53Speaker 1: He has five points. Samantha and Simon are tied with two.
- 29:58Speaker 1: The topic is old time nicknames. How much would you
- 30:03Speaker 1: like to risk? Close your eyes? Everyone closed their eyes.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Hold up your fingers with your wager amount? All right?
- 30:24Speaker 1: The song Take Me Out to the Ballgame has been
- 30:27Speaker 1: played in Major League Baseball stadiums for generations. It was
- 30:30Speaker 1: originally released, but wasn't played in a pro baseball stadium
- 30:37Speaker 1: until the nine four World Series, which was won by
- 30:40Speaker 1: the St. Louis Cardinals as minus one sixty favorites. That year,
- 30:45Speaker 1: the Cards were led by a loudmouthed pitcher and n
- 30:50Speaker 1: L M V P J Dean nicknamed Dizzy Dean. The
- 30:55Speaker 1: team's other ace was Dizzy's brother Paul, and together the
- 31:00Speaker 1: brothers secured all four of the team's World Series wins.
- 31:06Speaker 1: The press was eager to give Paul Dean a nickname,
- 31:09Speaker 1: something to pair up with Dizzy, and so they did.
- 31:13Speaker 1: And although Paul shares this is the clue, it's very important.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Although Paul shares the nickname with a famous car tune, Waterfowl,
- 31:23Speaker 1: he earned the Moniker three years before this character first appeared.
- 31:31Speaker 1: What was Paul Dean's nickname? All right, Jason Bennetti, you
- 31:50Speaker 1: are the leader in the clubhouse. You have risked one point,
- 31:58Speaker 1: very very strategic. What is your answer? My answer is Daffy. Wow,
- 32:07Speaker 1: nailed it, Daffy Duck. Simon, you have two points? Yeah,
- 32:12Speaker 1: because I am again losing my mind, I said tweety
- 32:14Speaker 1: after the bird of Twitter, which I know is not
- 32:17Speaker 1: the right answer because Twitter wasn't around in the nine.
- 32:20Speaker 1: You've got Mac Jones on your head. Samantha, you also
- 32:23Speaker 1: risked to what was your answer? I said Donald Duck,
- 32:27Speaker 1: which obviously was not I was in the vicinity. You
- 32:33Speaker 1: could only go with Donald or Daffy. Jason Bennetti so
- 32:37Speaker 1: dominated this game. And in the beginning he was worried
- 32:40Speaker 1: that it was all gonna go Simon's way. Simon didn't
- 32:43Speaker 1: get any help. Jason didn't even need any help. Samantha,
- 32:46Speaker 1: you got destroyed in this game. Jason Bennetti, you have
- 32:52Speaker 1: won the Thunderdome and your reward today you get to
- 32:56Speaker 1: go call a doubleheader. Yes, thank you. What would the
- 33:00Speaker 1: prize have been had the game yesterday not been reined out?
- 33:04Speaker 1: You would get to call a single game? And let
- 33:08Speaker 1: me ask you a question. Here's the story for you,
- 33:11Speaker 1: as a member, proud member of the White Sox community.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Years ago. I grew up in outside Chicago. I grew
- 33:18Speaker 1: up in a town called Highland Park, which is on
- 33:19Speaker 1: the north shore of Chicago. Uh my dad grew up
- 33:22Speaker 1: in Rogers Park, which is on the north side of Chicago,
- 33:25Speaker 1: not very far from, you know, from Wrigley So we
- 33:27Speaker 1: were obviously comes fans growing up. But I didn't hate
- 33:29Speaker 1: the White Sox. So many years ago, when I was
- 33:33Speaker 1: at ESPN, I was lucky enough to go to the
- 33:35Speaker 1: White House when President Barack Obama was doing the brackets.
- 33:41Speaker 1: And after he does his brackets and we're all gathering
- 33:45Speaker 1: around for the picture, I wanted to get like at
- 33:47Speaker 1: least a few seconds with him, and so I go
- 33:49Speaker 1: up to him and like, Hey, I'm from Chicago. I
- 33:51Speaker 1: root for the White Sox. What do you think of
- 33:52Speaker 1: the team this year? And so we talked about it
- 33:54Speaker 1: for a few minutes. I'm not a massive White Sox fan.
- 33:58Speaker 1: When I'm growing up, I did go there for Game
- 34:00Speaker 1: aimes and like, I would root for them, and I
- 34:01Speaker 1: loved it when they won the World Series. Uh, you know,
- 34:04Speaker 1: many many years ago. But do you feel that I
- 34:08Speaker 1: misled the president? Yes, you did, but it was for
- 34:11Speaker 1: a purpose of creating camaraderie and getting you in with
- 34:14Speaker 1: a sitting president. I have no problem with it. But
- 34:18Speaker 1: I think if you said you weren't deceptive, that would
- 34:21Speaker 1: be the only problem I would have. I definitely was deceptive.
- 34:25Speaker 1: And again, I don't not root for the White Sox.
- 34:28Speaker 1: I am a fan of the White Sox. I'm a
- 34:30Speaker 1: fan of what they are doing this year. I want
- 34:32Speaker 1: them to continue to do well. I want the White
- 34:35Speaker 1: Sox to continue to be the hot team that everybody
- 34:37Speaker 1: wants to root for and it talks about I think
- 34:39Speaker 1: they are a great futures bet for the World Series.
- 34:42Speaker 1: But in that moment, it was a little deceptive. You
- 34:44Speaker 1: did what you had to do, though, and I like,
- 34:46Speaker 1: I think it's a great play. I wouldn't have done
- 34:49Speaker 1: anything differently if I were you, But you know, I
- 34:52Speaker 1: think it's a great story too, Like it's that's fantastic.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Jason Bennetti, this is why you're a class act for
- 34:59Speaker 1: coming on our show. And this is why you're a winner.
- 35:01Speaker 1: You're a winner whether you won the Thunderdome or not.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Samantha and Simon, pack of shit. I don't even know
- 35:07Speaker 1: if I can have you working at the Action Network anymore.
- 35:10Speaker 1: I want to thank Jason Bennetti, the voice of the
- 35:12Speaker 1: Chicago White Sox, the voice of the ESPN Stack Cast,
- 35:15Speaker 1: the voice of so many games in so many places
- 35:17Speaker 1: that if you're not listening to them, then you're clearly
- 35:19Speaker 1: not a sports fan. If you want to thank Samantha Prividi,
- 35:22Speaker 1: I do want to thank Simon Hunter, my colleagues at
- 35:25Speaker 1: the Action Network. Before we sign off, here's a word
- 35:29Speaker 1: from our fearless leader, Action Network CEO, Patrick King. This
- 35:34Speaker 1: is pathetic, this is awful. We've all been humiliated, all right.
- 35:39Speaker 1: This has been the favorites from the Volume Podcast Network. Again,
- 35:43Speaker 1: my thanks to Jason Bennetti, Samantha Priviti, Simon Hunter. Reminder,
