- 0:02Speaker 1: dispute between Canada and the United States, with no talks
- 0:06Speaker 1: scheduled and the negotiating team back in Ottawa, Prime Minister
- 0:09Speaker 1: Marcarni addressed the nation yesterday afternoon, accusing the US of
- 0:13Speaker 1: changing the terms in the few days leading up to
- 0:15Speaker 1: the Friday midnight deadline. He says Canada could not accept
- 0:19Speaker 1: what the US was offering, nor could it give what
- 0:21Speaker 1: they were asking for. President Trump has imposed fifty percent tariffs,
- 0:25Speaker 1: so Canada will impose matching retaliatory duties to take effect
- 0:29Speaker 1: just after Labor Day. He says, we are masters of
- 0:31Speaker 1: our own destiny.
- 0:33Speaker 2: This government is matching that spirit with twenty five billion
- 0:36Speaker 2: dollars to protect Canadian workers and businesses hurt by American tariffs.
- 0:40Speaker 2: We're helping small and medium sized businesses respond by investing
- 0:43Speaker 2: equipment and productivity, in supply chain resilience, and we're financing
- 0:49Speaker 2: large companies to keep large employers operating and to retain
- 0:53Speaker 2: their workers. We're helping those hardest hit industries retool and
- 0:58Speaker 2: pivot to those new international markets.
- 1:02Speaker 1: He also says the US wanted to restrict Canada's ability
- 1:05Speaker 1: to enter into other trade deals.
- 1:07Speaker 2: What we've accomplished in the last year twenty new deals,
- 1:09Speaker 2: economic and security partnership, the prospect of doubling our market
- 1:14Speaker 2: access because we believe in free trade, were the partner
- 1:18Speaker 2: of choice in many respects for countries around the world,
- 1:20Speaker 2: and the Americans wanted to restrict that. They had language
- 1:22Speaker 2: that they wanted to restrict.
- 1:23Speaker 1: The unacceptable, the premier says. The Prime Minister has his
- 1:27Speaker 1: full support as the provinces maintain a united Team Canada
- 1:30Speaker 1: approach to its trade dispute with the United States. Premier
- 1:34Speaker 1: Tony Wakem posted yesterday that the province stands firmly with
- 1:37Speaker 1: Team Canada. He also offered his thanks to the federal
- 1:40Speaker 1: government negotiating team for their work and decisions in navigating
- 1:43Speaker 1: discussions with an unpredictable partner. He and the premiers of Ontario,
- 1:48Speaker 1: Saskatchewan and British Columbia backed a firm response, while Alberta
- 1:52Speaker 1: Premier Danielle Smith warned that retaliatory tariffs could raise costs
- 1:56Speaker 1: for Canadian farmers. What economic impact the fifty percent terearfs
- 2:00Speaker 1: the United States has imposed will have on local industry
- 2:03Speaker 1: remains to be seen. The provincial government is calling for
- 2:06Speaker 1: proposals to renovate and expand Pasadena Elementary School in the
- 2:10Speaker 1: West Coast. Some sixteen million dollars was included in the
- 2:13Speaker 1: spring budget for improvements to a coal Boreal in Happy Valley, Goosepe,
- 2:17Speaker 1: Saint Teresa's in Munday Pond, and Pasadena Elementary. The school
- 2:21Speaker 1: will be outfitted with four additional classrooms, a new kitchen
- 2:24Speaker 1: and lunch room, accessible washrooms, and space for a pre
- 2:27Speaker 1: kindergarten program. The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary is teaming up
- 2:32Speaker 1: with Transport Canada to establish stations around the province to
- 2:35Speaker 1: supply personal floatation devices on loan. The need is even
- 2:39Speaker 1: greater with more people taking to the water during the
- 2:41Speaker 1: expanded recreational cod Fishery President Jim Chidley says PFDs save lives,
- 2:46Speaker 1: and to date ten stations have been set up with
- 2:48Speaker 1: life jackets, but they're looking for additional donations from the public.
- 2:52Speaker 1: He says the goal is to have PFDs available in
- 2:54Speaker 1: as many locations as possible. That's your news. I'm Mahelia.
