- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio. Hi there, faith listeners, and welcome to the
- 0:05Speaker 1: Bible Explained Podcast. So fun fact for you guys. Before
- 0:15Speaker 1: I named the Bible the Bible Explained, it used to
- 0:19Speaker 1: be called P forty Ministries. You guys might remember that
- 0:21Speaker 1: when I was trying to think of a new name
- 0:23Speaker 1: because I knew P forty Ministries was not a good
- 0:25Speaker 1: name for a podcast. I was thinking of all these
- 0:28Speaker 1: things and I had two names that I was going
- 0:30Speaker 1: to name the podcast. It was either the Bible Explained
- 0:34Speaker 1: or it was the binge Worthy Bible. And I don't
- 0:39Speaker 1: know why, but the Bible Explained just really stood out
- 0:42Speaker 1: in my head and I just liked it, and that
- 0:45Speaker 1: was what I ended up going with. I think I
- 0:46Speaker 1: might have also taken a poll with the followers that
- 0:49Speaker 1: I had at the time as well, and I think
- 0:51Speaker 1: most people liked the Bible Explained over the binge Worthy Bible.
- 0:55Speaker 1: But I don't know. I think both names are pretty cool, actually,
- 0:58Speaker 1: but Bible Explain that's what it ended up being called.
- 1:02Speaker 1: We're gonna go ahead and read Hebrews nine today, Versus
- 1:05Speaker 1: one through fourteen, and talk about this idea of how
- 1:09Speaker 1: the First Covenant and specifically the tabernacle were just a
- 1:14Speaker 1: picture of the good things to come. We're also going
- 1:16Speaker 1: to talk about the Arc of the Covenant and why
- 1:19Speaker 1: the three articles that went inside the Arc of the
- 1:22Speaker 1: Covenant signified the sinfulness of man. So it's gonna be
- 1:26Speaker 1: a really good episode. Right after this quick word from
- 1:29Speaker 1: a sponsor faithful listeneris, let's go ahead and read Hebrews
- 1:34Speaker 1: nine one through fourteen today. As always, I'll be reading
- 1:37Speaker 1: from the web. Now. Indeed, even the first Covenant had
- 1:42Speaker 1: ordinances of divine service, and an earthly sanctuary for a
- 1:46Speaker 1: tabernacle was prepared. In the first part. There was a lampstand,
- 1:49Speaker 1: the table, and the show bred, which is called the
- 1:51Speaker 1: holy Place. After the second veil was the tabernacle, which
- 1:55Speaker 1: is called the Holy of Holies, having a golden altar
- 1:57Speaker 1: of incense and the ark of the Covenant overlaid on
- 2:00Speaker 1: all sides with gold, in which was a golden pot
- 2:03Speaker 1: holding the manna, aaron's rod that butted, and the tablets
- 2:06Speaker 1: of the Covenant, and above it Cherubim of glory overshadowing
- 2:10Speaker 1: the mercy seat of which things we can't speak now
- 2:12Speaker 1: in detail. Now these things having been thus prepared, the
- 2:16Speaker 1: priests go in continually into the First Tabernacle, accomplishing the services,
- 2:20Speaker 1: but into the second the high priest alone once in
- 2:23Speaker 1: the year, not without blood, which she offers for himself
- 2:26Speaker 1: and for the errors of the people. The Holy Spirit
- 2:29Speaker 1: is indicating this that the way into the Holy Place
- 2:32Speaker 1: wasn't yet revealed while the First Tabernacle was standing. This
- 2:35Speaker 1: is a symbol of the present age, where gifts and
- 2:37Speaker 1: sacrifices are offered that are incapable concerning the conscience of
- 2:41Speaker 1: making the worshiper perfect, being only with foods and drinks
- 2:45Speaker 1: and various washings fleshly ordinances imposed until a time of reformation.
- 2:51Speaker 1: But Christ having come as a high priest of the
- 2:54Speaker 1: coming good things, through the greater and more perfect Tabernacle,
- 2:58Speaker 1: not made with hands, that is to say, not of
- 3:00Speaker 1: this creation, nor yet through the blood of goats and calves,
- 3:03Speaker 1: but through his own blood, entered in once and for all,
- 3:07Speaker 1: into the Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption. For if
- 3:11Speaker 1: the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of
- 3:13Speaker 1: a heifer sprinkling on those who have been defiled sanctify
- 3:16Speaker 1: to the cleanness of the flesh, how much more will
- 3:19Speaker 1: the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered
- 3:22Speaker 1: himself without defect to God. Cleanse your conscience from dead
- 3:25Speaker 1: works to serve the living God. The first thing to
- 3:30Speaker 1: note is that Hebrews nine is a continuation from Hebrews eight,
- 3:36Speaker 1: And that sounds really obvious when I say it out loud,
- 3:38Speaker 1: but I think sometimes we get kind of stuck on
- 3:41Speaker 1: these chapter breakdowns. We forget that these books were once letters,
- 3:46Speaker 1: cohesive letters that didn't really have chapter breakdowns in them.
- 3:50Speaker 1: We only added the chapter numbers and the verse numbers
- 3:53Speaker 1: later on for our own convenience so we could find
- 3:55Speaker 1: something very easily in the Bible. So really, there is
- 3:59Speaker 1: no pause in the Book of Hebrews. It's one long,
- 4:03Speaker 1: continual letter. So when understanding Hebrews chapter nine, you got
- 4:08Speaker 1: to understand the context of Hebrews eight as well. So
- 4:12Speaker 1: let's go back to Hebrews eight and read verses four
- 4:15Speaker 1: through six. It says for if he or Jesus were
- 4:20Speaker 1: on earth, he would not be a priest at all,
- 4:23Speaker 1: seeing there are priests who offer gifts according to the law,
- 4:26Speaker 1: who serve a copy and a shadow of the heavenly things.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Even as Moses was warned by God when he was
- 4:33Speaker 1: about to make the tabernacle. For God said, see, you
- 4:36Speaker 1: shall make everything according to the pattern that was shown
- 4:39Speaker 1: to you on the mountain. But now he or Jesus
- 4:44Speaker 1: has obtained a more excellent ministry by as much as
- 4:47Speaker 1: he is also the mediator of a better covenant, which
- 4:50Speaker 1: on better promises has been given as law. And then
- 4:54Speaker 1: jumping down to verse thirteen, it says in that he
- 4:57Speaker 1: says a new covenant he has made the first opsole.
- 5:01Speaker 1: But that which is becoming obsolete and grows aged, is
- 5:04Speaker 1: near to vanishing away. So all that being said, the
- 5:08Speaker 1: author is getting to the point about how the Old
- 5:11Speaker 1: Testament law is becoming obsolete, because the Old Testament law
- 5:15Speaker 1: was nothing but a foreshadowing of the heavenly things and
- 5:20Speaker 1: the things that were to come. Essentially, and the example
- 5:23Speaker 1: given right here is Moses. He was given this heavenly
- 5:27Speaker 1: pattern of how to make the tabernacle. Basically, the tabernacle
- 5:31Speaker 1: was supposed to imitate the things of heaven here on earth.
- 5:35Speaker 1: But that's all it was. It was an imitation. It
- 5:38Speaker 1: was a shadow, is what the author says right here. Now,
- 5:41Speaker 1: don't get me wrong, there were good things about the
- 5:43Speaker 1: Old Testament law, good things about the tabernacle good things
- 5:46Speaker 1: about the Temple, but all of these things were just
- 5:49Speaker 1: a shadow of the heavenly things, aged and obsolete. So
- 5:54Speaker 1: jumping into our passage for today, Hebrews nine, verse one. Now, indeed,
- 5:59Speaker 1: even the First Covenant had ordinances of divine service and
- 6:03Speaker 1: an earthly sanctuary. You can see there that the author
- 6:07Speaker 1: is continuing with that thought that was talked about in
- 6:10Speaker 1: Hebrews eight about how the Old Testament law and the Tabernacle,
- 6:13Speaker 1: though they were good and had elements of divine service,
- 6:18Speaker 1: they were still earthly in nature. And he goes on
- 6:22Speaker 1: to express this point even further in verses two through fourteen.
- 6:27Speaker 1: For the tabernacle was prepared in the first part there
- 6:29Speaker 1: was a lamp stand, the table, and the showbread, which
- 6:32Speaker 1: is called the Holy Place. Now, if you're interested in
- 6:36Speaker 1: what went into building the temple and all of the
- 6:38Speaker 1: elements that were supposed to be built to fill the temple,
- 6:42Speaker 1: that's talked about in Exodus twenty six in depth. And
- 6:45Speaker 1: I'm not going to read that for you, but you
- 6:47Speaker 1: can definitely do that on your own if you're curious.
- 6:50Speaker 1: But again, the author of Hebrews is saying the Tabernacle
- 6:53Speaker 1: was earthly. And here's all these earthly things that were
- 6:57Speaker 1: to fill it, this lamp stand, the table, and the showbread.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And this area of the temple was called the Holy Place.
- 7:05Speaker 1: But beyond this holy place there was an even more
- 7:08Speaker 1: holy place, he says in verse three, after the second veil,
- 7:11Speaker 1: was the tabernacle, which is called the Holy of Holies,
- 7:14Speaker 1: having a golden altar of incense and the Ark of
- 7:17Speaker 1: the Covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which
- 7:20Speaker 1: was a golden pot holding the mana aaron's rod that butted,
- 7:24Speaker 1: and the tablets of the Covenant, and above it the
- 7:27Speaker 1: Cherubim of Glory, overshadowing the mercy seat of which things
- 7:30Speaker 1: we can't speak now in detail. So the author's like,
- 7:34Speaker 1: you guys know the drill, you know everything that went
- 7:37Speaker 1: into the tabernacle, So I'm not going to go into
- 7:39Speaker 1: this in any more detail. But essentially, the holy place
- 7:44Speaker 1: was where only the priests could go into. And then
- 7:47Speaker 1: the most holy place was covered by this really thick veil,
- 7:51Speaker 1: and that was where the Ark of the Covenant sat.
- 7:54Speaker 1: It was actually a really small room. It was not
- 7:55Speaker 1: very big at all. All that it really had were
- 7:58Speaker 1: these two statues of these cherubim where the wings would
- 8:03Speaker 1: spread out and cover the the arc of the Covenant,
- 8:07Speaker 1: and then the Ark of the Covenant sat in there
- 8:09Speaker 1: as well, And that was all that was in the
- 8:11Speaker 1: Most Holy Place, and the only person that was allowed
- 8:14Speaker 1: to go in there was the High Priest once a year,
- 8:18Speaker 1: or rather once in a year essentially, so there was
- 8:22Speaker 1: one day a year that the priest could go in
- 8:24Speaker 1: and out of the Most Holy Place. And we'll talk
- 8:27Speaker 1: about that in more detail in one second, but I
- 8:29Speaker 1: do want to mention something here before we move on
- 8:31Speaker 1: from this point. The author mentions the golden altar of
- 8:35Speaker 1: incense and kind of makes it seem like it was
- 8:40Speaker 1: inside the Most Holy Place, but we know that that's
- 8:42Speaker 1: not the case. Based on Exodus thirty, the golden altar
- 8:46Speaker 1: of incense was actually outside of the Most Holy Place.
- 8:49Speaker 1: But the author here mentions that the most Holy Place
- 8:52Speaker 1: included a golden altar of incense and the Ark of
- 8:56Speaker 1: the Covenant overlaid on all sides with gold. Why would
- 8:59Speaker 1: he mention that if it's very clearly outside of the
- 9:03Speaker 1: most Holy Place. Well, because in First King's Chapter six,
- 9:08Speaker 1: the altar of incense was actually considered part of the
- 9:11Speaker 1: Most Holy Place, though it was not on the inside
- 9:15Speaker 1: of the Most Holy Place. Interestingly enough, here's what first
- 9:19Speaker 1: King six twenty two says. He overlaid the whole house
- 9:23Speaker 1: with gold until all the house was finished. He also
- 9:26Speaker 1: overlaid the whole altar that belonged to the Inner Sanctuary
- 9:30Speaker 1: with gold. So, for whatever reason, the altar of incense
- 9:34Speaker 1: belonged to the Inner Sanctuary, but it was not inside
- 9:38Speaker 1: the Inner Sanctuary. It was just considered part of it.
- 9:41Speaker 1: And if you read Exodus chapter thirty, you can actually
- 9:44Speaker 1: see that God considered the alter of incense a very
- 9:47Speaker 1: holy object. It was one of the objects that were
- 9:49Speaker 1: supposed to be purified on the day of atonement, so
- 9:54Speaker 1: it was considered part of the most Holy place, though
- 9:56Speaker 1: it was not inside the most holy place. Interestingly enough,
- 10:00Speaker 1: now the author does go into some depth about what
- 10:03Speaker 1: was inside the Ark of the Covenant, which I think
- 10:06Speaker 1: that is important to note as well, because again he's
- 10:09Speaker 1: mentioning how all of these things they were a heavenly picture,
- 10:13Speaker 1: but they were nothing more than a picture. They were
- 10:16Speaker 1: nothing more than an imitation, and this is proven by
- 10:19Speaker 1: everything that the priests had to do, and also the
- 10:23Speaker 1: contents inside the temple itself. These earthly contents, and the
- 10:28Speaker 1: Ark of the Covenant, which was the most holy object
- 10:31Speaker 1: inside the temple, like that was the thing you could
- 10:35Speaker 1: not touch. That was the thing that had to be
- 10:37Speaker 1: carried a specific way because that was the throne of
- 10:40Speaker 1: God himself. That's why it's called the mercy Seat. That
- 10:43Speaker 1: was just the lid of the arc of the Covenant,
- 10:45Speaker 1: and it was the seat where God would rain mercifully
- 10:50Speaker 1: on the Ark of the Covenant. The most holy object
- 10:54Speaker 1: still contained earthly objects, is what it says. It contained
- 10:59Speaker 1: a pothole holding the mana. It contained aaron's rod that butted,
- 11:04Speaker 1: and it contained the tablets of the Covenant. All three
- 11:08Speaker 1: of those things were reminders of the sin of humanity.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Remember the story of the Israelites out in the wilderness
- 11:16Speaker 1: where God fed them with this bread that came down
- 11:18Speaker 1: from heaven, and the people didn't know what it was
- 11:21Speaker 1: until they called it mana, because that literally means what
- 11:24Speaker 1: is this? They called it mana. The people hated the mana.
- 11:31Speaker 1: They wanted meat and carrots and cucumbers and all of
- 11:34Speaker 1: the foods that they remember eating while they were in Egypt.
- 11:37Speaker 1: They were like, we're sick of this disgusting manna. We
- 11:40Speaker 1: hate it so much. We don't want God's provision. It's gross.
- 11:44Speaker 1: God had the people put a bowl of mana inside
- 11:47Speaker 1: the ark of the Covenant because it was a reminder
- 11:50Speaker 1: of their sin and God's goodness. The second thing was
- 11:54Speaker 1: Aaron's rod that butted. I don't know if you remember
- 11:58Speaker 1: that story because it wasn't talked about very long in scripture,
- 12:01Speaker 1: but there was this whole faction that took place where
- 12:04Speaker 1: a bunch of the people decided that they were going
- 12:06Speaker 1: to go back to Egypt. They're going to find a
- 12:09Speaker 1: brand new leader for them to take them back. So
- 12:13Speaker 1: Moses came out with all of these rods. If I'm
- 12:15Speaker 1: remembering the story correctly, I did not look the story up,
- 12:18Speaker 1: so forgive me if I get something wrong. But Moses
- 12:21Speaker 1: came out with all of these rods and handed them
- 12:24Speaker 1: to the different tribal leaders I believe it was, and
- 12:28Speaker 1: he told the people, if any of these rods bud,
- 12:32Speaker 1: that is the person who God chooses. And sure enough,
- 12:35Speaker 1: the next day, Aaron, the high priest, his rod abudded.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Nobody else had any budding rods, only Aarons. And not
- 12:44Speaker 1: only did it, but I'm pretty sure it actually produced almonds,
- 12:48Speaker 1: which is kind of cool. So the butting rod was
- 12:51Speaker 1: another thing that went inside the Ark of the Covenant,
- 12:53Speaker 1: and again it was a reminder of the sinfulness of
- 12:56Speaker 1: the people, how they were constantly going against God's will
- 13:00Speaker 1: for their lives. They were saying, we don't want what
- 13:02Speaker 1: God has for us. We don't want the leaders God
- 13:04Speaker 1: has for us, We want something else. And then the
- 13:08Speaker 1: last thing that was inside the Ark of the Covenant
- 13:11Speaker 1: were the tablets of the Covenant themselves, so the Ten Commandments,
- 13:16Speaker 1: those also were a symbol of the sinfulness of humanity.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Remember what happened when Moses got the Ten Commandments. He
- 13:23Speaker 1: came down from the mountain. He's holding the Ten Commandments
- 13:26Speaker 1: and he sees the people worshiping the Golden Calf and
- 13:31Speaker 1: having this giant sex party. Probably Moses gets so furious
- 13:37Speaker 1: that he smashes the Ten Commandments on the ground and
- 13:42Speaker 1: forces the people to eat the golden calf that they made.
- 13:46Speaker 1: And that again is another story of the sinfulness of people,
- 13:51Speaker 1: about how God was giving the people something good, He
- 13:55Speaker 1: was giving them the Covenant, and the people just constantly
- 13:59Speaker 1: rejected God and wanted to do their very own things.
- 14:02Speaker 1: So these three symbols of the humanity of people, the
- 14:06Speaker 1: sinfulness of people, were placed inside the ark of the Covenant,
- 14:10Speaker 1: inside the mercy seat where God sat on his throne,
- 14:14Speaker 1: knowing that those three symbols of the foolishness of humanity
- 14:18Speaker 1: were inside his throne. Yet he was reigning with forgiveness
- 14:22Speaker 1: and mercy every day. But all of these things were
- 14:25Speaker 1: a picture of the temporal, a picture a shadow of
- 14:29Speaker 1: the heavenly things, and foreshadowing what was to come. The
- 14:32Speaker 1: Old Testament laws were good, the temple was good, it
- 14:37Speaker 1: was beautiful. It was where God reigned and lived among
- 14:41Speaker 1: his people. It was a good thing. But it is
- 14:44Speaker 1: so much more inferior to what was about to come.
- 14:49Speaker 1: And he pushes this point even further in verses six
- 14:52Speaker 1: through ten by talking about the Day of Atonement, which
- 14:54Speaker 1: was the most holy day on the Jewish calendar. Verse six,
- 14:59Speaker 1: he says, now these things having been thus prepared, the
- 15:02Speaker 1: priests go in continually into the First Tabernacle, accomplishing the services,
- 15:07Speaker 1: so that would be the day to day service that
- 15:09Speaker 1: the priests were supposed to do inside the Holy Place,
- 15:12Speaker 1: not the most holy place, the Holy Place, and some
- 15:14Speaker 1: of those services included refreshing the showbread, probably cleaning the temple,
- 15:20Speaker 1: making sure the fire never went out, making sure the
- 15:23Speaker 1: incense never went out, just doing the day to day
- 15:27Speaker 1: tasks that were needed inside the temple, but inside the
- 15:31Speaker 1: most holy place, says in verse seven, the high priest
- 15:34Speaker 1: could go alone once in the year, not without blood,
- 15:39Speaker 1: which he offers for himself and for the errors of
- 15:41Speaker 1: the people. The day of atonement is discussed in a
- 15:44Speaker 1: lot more detail in Leviticus sixteen. So let's go back
- 15:47Speaker 1: to Leviticus sixteen eleven through nineteen and read what this
- 15:52Speaker 1: has to say about the day of atonement. Starting in
- 15:54Speaker 1: verse eleven, this is God speaking, Aaron shall present the
- 15:57Speaker 1: bowl of the sin offering, which is for himself, and
- 16:00Speaker 1: shall make atonement for himself and for his house, and
- 16:03Speaker 1: shall kill the bowl of the sin offering, which is
- 16:05Speaker 1: for himself. I mean, how many times does God say there,
- 16:09Speaker 1: this is for yourself. So that the priest never gets
- 16:13Speaker 1: a big head right, thinking that he is above all
- 16:16Speaker 1: these other people in that he doesn't sin or something
- 16:19Speaker 1: like that. God's like, no, you definitely do sin. You
- 16:22Speaker 1: and your family all sin, and you need to atone
- 16:24Speaker 1: for yourself for these sins, and so on. The day
- 16:28Speaker 1: of Atonement. This sacrifice was specifically for the High Priest
- 16:31Speaker 1: and his family to offer first. Before he offers for
- 16:36Speaker 1: anybody else. He's got to do it for himself first.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Continuing in verse twelve, he shall take a censer full
- 16:41Speaker 1: of coals of fire from off the altar before Yahweh,
- 16:44Speaker 1: and two handfuls of sweet incense, beaten small, and shall
- 16:48Speaker 1: bring it within the veil. And he shall put the
- 16:50Speaker 1: incense on the fire before Yahweh, that the cloud of
- 16:53Speaker 1: the incense may cover the mercy seat that is on
- 16:55Speaker 1: the covenant, so that he will not die. He shall
- 16:59Speaker 1: take some of the blood of thel and sprinkle it
- 17:01Speaker 1: with his finger on the mercy seat on the east,
- 17:03Speaker 1: and before the mercy seat, he shall sprinkle some of
- 17:06Speaker 1: the blood with his finger seven times, so it looks
- 17:09Speaker 1: like the incense was supposed to be lit to first,
- 17:12Speaker 1: so that this like veil of incense, I guess, would
- 17:15Speaker 1: cover the mercy seat. And for whatever reason this was
- 17:19Speaker 1: very important. It says that the priest must do this
- 17:22Speaker 1: so that he will not die. This was a dangerous job.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I think a lot of people don't understand that that
- 17:28Speaker 1: the role of the High Priest and the priests in
- 17:30Speaker 1: general was a very dangerous job because if you didn't
- 17:33Speaker 1: do things right, you were messing with God himself. You know,
- 17:38Speaker 1: I've definitely talked about this before on the podcast, and
- 17:40Speaker 1: I've come to understand it a little bit differently than
- 17:43Speaker 1: I used to. I used to say that God no
- 17:47Speaker 1: longer lives with humanity because of sin. God cannot be
- 17:51Speaker 1: around sin. I used to believe that, and I figured
- 17:55Speaker 1: out that that is not the case. God absolutely can
- 17:58Speaker 1: be around sin. The problem is is that sinful human
- 18:02Speaker 1: beings cannot be around God. Every single time God shows
- 18:07Speaker 1: up to sinful human beings, which he does quite often
- 18:10Speaker 1: in the Old Testament, people fall down like dead because
- 18:14Speaker 1: they realize their insignificance in front of God. They realize
- 18:18Speaker 1: their corruption in front of God, and then God forgives
- 18:21Speaker 1: them of their corruption. This reminds me of Isaiah the prophet,
- 18:26Speaker 1: when he was transported up to heaven. He saw God
- 18:30Speaker 1: in his glory and fell down as dead, and he's like,
- 18:33Speaker 1: I am a dead man because I speak with a
- 18:35Speaker 1: corrupt tongue. And God forgave Isaiah from his corruption and said, okay, no,
- 18:41Speaker 1: don't speak with a corrupt tongue any longer speak words
- 18:45Speaker 1: of good and of prophecy now, so God can be
- 18:47Speaker 1: around sinful human beings. The problem is that sinful human
- 18:50Speaker 1: beings cannot be around God, which is why it was
- 18:53Speaker 1: so important for the priests to make sure that they
- 18:58Speaker 1: were cleansed of their sins sins and had a right
- 19:02Speaker 1: heart when they went into the temple and before God.
- 19:06Speaker 1: They had to do this so that they would not die,
- 19:10Speaker 1: because being in front of God with sinfulness is a
- 19:14Speaker 1: very very dangerous place to be. So all of these
- 19:18Speaker 1: regulations were put in place so that Aaron and all
- 19:21Speaker 1: the other high priests that would come after him would
- 19:23Speaker 1: not die. It says in verse fifteen. Then he shall
- 19:26Speaker 1: kill the goat of the sin offering that is for
- 19:28Speaker 1: the people, and bring his blood within the veil, and
- 19:31Speaker 1: do with his blood as he did with the blood
- 19:33Speaker 1: of the bull, sprinkle it on the mercy seat. And
- 19:36Speaker 1: before the mercy seat, he shall make atonement for the
- 19:39Speaker 1: Holy place because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel,
- 19:42Speaker 1: and because of their transgressions, even all their sins. And
- 19:46Speaker 1: so he shall do for the ten of meeting that
- 19:47Speaker 1: dwells within them in the middle of their uncleanness. No
- 19:51Speaker 1: one shall be in the tene meeting when he enters
- 19:53Speaker 1: to make atonement in the Holy Place, until he comes
- 19:56Speaker 1: out and he has made atonement for himself and for
- 19:58Speaker 1: his household and for all the assembly of Israel. Now,
- 20:03Speaker 1: on Thursday, we're going to talk about the necessity of
- 20:05Speaker 1: the blood, like why the blood was sprinkled inside the
- 20:07Speaker 1: most holy place, and what the point of the blood
- 20:10Speaker 1: really was, like it sounds really gory, and why was
- 20:13Speaker 1: that necessary. So let's talk specifically about why blood was
- 20:16Speaker 1: necessary for forgiveness on Thursday. But going back to Hebrews
- 20:21Speaker 1: nine and finishing up this chapter, the temple and the
- 20:24Speaker 1: Old Testament laws, all of them were an imperfect picture
- 20:28Speaker 1: of the heavenly things, which is stated in verses nine
- 20:31Speaker 1: through ten. This is a symbol of the present age
- 20:34Speaker 1: where gifts and sacrifices are offered that are incapable concerning
- 20:38Speaker 1: the conscience of making the worshiper perfect, being only with
- 20:43Speaker 1: food and drinks in various washings, fleshly ordinances imposed until
- 20:48Speaker 1: a time of reformation. So basically, all of these things
- 20:51Speaker 1: that the priests did were temporal until Christ came, making
- 20:57Speaker 1: himself the perfect sacrifice. It actually says right here that
- 21:00Speaker 1: the priests weren't able to cleanse the guilty consciences of
- 21:04Speaker 1: the people, and the blood of the goats and the
- 21:07Speaker 1: bulls just could not cleanse the guilty conscience, especially not
- 21:11Speaker 1: long term, because people would just keep sending over and
- 21:15Speaker 1: over and over again. But Christ verse eleven, having come,
- 21:19Speaker 1: is a high priest of the coming good things through
- 21:23Speaker 1: the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands,
- 21:26Speaker 1: that is to say, not of this creation, nor yet
- 21:29Speaker 1: through the blood of goats and calves, but through his
- 21:32Speaker 1: own blood entered in once and for all, into the
- 21:36Speaker 1: Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption. So Jesus is now
- 21:42Speaker 1: our perfect high priest, not of a temple made with
- 21:45Speaker 1: human hands, but of an eternal spiritual temple that is
- 21:50Speaker 1: so much better than anything we could have here on earth.
- 21:54Speaker 1: And then he says in verses thirteen and fourteen, to conclude,
- 21:57Speaker 1: for if the blood of goats and bulls and the
- 22:00Speaker 1: ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled
- 22:02Speaker 1: sanctified to the cleanness of flesh, how much more will
- 22:05Speaker 1: the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit, offered
- 22:09Speaker 1: himself without defect to God cleanse your conscience? From dead
- 22:13Speaker 1: works to serve the living God. If the blood of
- 22:18Speaker 1: goats and bulls were enough to temporarily make you righteous,
- 22:23Speaker 1: how much more will the perfect blood of Jesus make
- 22:26Speaker 1: you righteous? And not just make you righteous, but actually
- 22:29Speaker 1: cleanse you of your guilty conscience permanently, Not temporarily like
- 22:34Speaker 1: the offerings back in the old days, but permanently. This
- 22:38Speaker 1: is why I believe it's John who says, I think
- 22:42Speaker 1: in First John he says, come boldly before the Oh wait, no,
- 22:47Speaker 1: is that Hebrews. I don't know where this verse is,
- 22:51Speaker 1: come boldly before the Throne of grace. We can do
- 22:54Speaker 1: that now. The verse reference is indeed Hebrews four, verse sixteen.
- 22:58Speaker 1: And I'm not gonna lie him a little embarrassed that
- 23:00Speaker 1: I didn't know that, because we just talked about it
- 23:02Speaker 1: a few chapters ago. But it makes a lot of
- 23:04Speaker 1: sense that it is in the book of Hebrews, because
- 23:06Speaker 1: that's kind of what the entire point of Hebrews is.
- 23:10Speaker 1: We have a high priest we can go to at
- 23:11Speaker 1: any time. We can come before God boldly, whereas people
- 23:15Speaker 1: back in the old days didn't feel that they could
- 23:18Speaker 1: do that. However, even in the Old Testament, God never
- 23:22Speaker 1: turned down a humble heart. He never turned down somebody
- 23:26Speaker 1: that wanted a personal relationship with him. In fact, that
- 23:30Speaker 1: is talked about in Psalm fifty one. This is a
- 23:34Speaker 1: psalm by David actually when he had committed adultery with Bathsheba.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Here's what David says in verses nine through seventeen. Hide
- 23:43Speaker 1: your face from my sins and blot out all of
- 23:47Speaker 1: my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, Oh God,
- 23:51Speaker 1: renew a right spirit within me. Don't throw me from
- 23:54Speaker 1: your presence. Don't take your holy spirit from me. Restore
- 23:58Speaker 1: to me the joy of yourself. Uphold me with a
- 24:01Speaker 1: willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways. Sinners
- 24:06Speaker 1: will be converted to you. Deliver me from the guilt
- 24:10Speaker 1: of bloodshed, Oh God, the God of my salvation. My
- 24:14Speaker 1: tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. Lord, open my lips.
- 24:18Speaker 1: My mouth will declare your praise for you. Don't delight
- 24:22Speaker 1: in sacrifice, or else I would give it. You have
- 24:25Speaker 1: no pleasure in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are
- 24:29Speaker 1: a broken spirit. Oh God, you will not despise a
- 24:33Speaker 1: broken and contrite heart. David got it, you know, a
- 24:38Speaker 1: lot of people back in the Old Testament days they
- 24:40Speaker 1: didn't get it. They thought they had to do all
- 24:42Speaker 1: of these things in order to gain righteousness. But David
- 24:45Speaker 1: got it. He understood that God wanted a personal relationship
- 24:49Speaker 1: with each of us. And David even said, He's like God,
- 24:52Speaker 1: if you wanted sacrifices from me after this horrible sin
- 24:56Speaker 1: that I just committed, then I would give them. But
- 24:59Speaker 1: that is not what you you want. What you actually
- 25:01Speaker 1: want is a broken and contrite heart. David was an anomaly.
- 25:07Speaker 1: He was able to look at the law and really
- 25:09Speaker 1: understand it, and he was one of the few that
- 25:11Speaker 1: were able to do it. You know, when Jesus came
- 25:13Speaker 1: to Earth, he was constantly correcting all of this these
- 25:17Speaker 1: misunderstandings about the Old Testament Law, about how the Pharisees
- 25:21Speaker 1: were just putting all these rules and regulations on themselves
- 25:24Speaker 1: and other people, things that the Old Testament Law didn't
- 25:27Speaker 1: say to do, which proves that very few people understood
- 25:30Speaker 1: the Old Testament laws. You know, David was one of them.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Very few people understood them. But Jesus came to correct
- 25:35Speaker 1: all of these misunderstandings, and he didn't abolish the Old
- 25:39Speaker 1: Testament laws. They're still here. They're still here for us
- 25:43Speaker 1: to read and understand. He didn't abolish them, He came
- 25:46Speaker 1: to fulfill them. Yes, the blood of goats and bulls
- 25:50Speaker 1: temporarily worked, but Jesus, when he offered his perfect sacrifice,
- 25:55Speaker 1: he made salvation and righteousness work for eternity. And now
- 25:59Speaker 1: we can come before God's throne boldly because our consciences
- 26:05Speaker 1: can be clear understanding that Jesus is the one that
- 26:10Speaker 1: saved us permanently from all of our sins. It's so
- 26:15Speaker 1: funny we've been talking so much about animal sacrifice recently.
- 26:18Speaker 1: It's really a kind of a core theme, I suppose
- 26:20Speaker 1: of the Old Testament and the New Testament. Just yesterday,
- 26:24Speaker 1: in the Book of Ezra, I was discussing how the
- 26:25Speaker 1: first thing the people did when they came back to
- 26:28Speaker 1: Israel from Babylonian captivity was they built an altar to
- 26:32Speaker 1: offer sacrifices to God. So the people have always understood
- 26:36Speaker 1: the necessity of sacrifices in place of themselves, if that
- 26:41Speaker 1: makes sense. But of course, you guys know the drill.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Before we end today's episode, Faithful Listeners, here is one
- 26:47Speaker 1: last word from a sponsor on Thursday, we're going to
- 26:52Speaker 1: talk about this topic a little bit more and discuss
- 26:54Speaker 1: why blood specifically was necessary for forgiveness, because that's what
- 26:59Speaker 1: the author of Hebrews goes a lot more in depth with,
- 27:03Speaker 1: still making the same points about how only one sacrifice
- 27:08Speaker 1: could really save us from our sins. So we'll get
- 27:10Speaker 1: into that topic on Thursday. I hope to see all
- 27:14Speaker 1: of you guys then, but also tune in tomorrow for
- 27:17Speaker 1: the Book of Ezra. I've been having a blast going
- 27:19Speaker 1: through the history of the Jews, especially with this new
- 27:22Speaker 1: chapter of the History of the Jews. We've been talking
- 27:24Speaker 1: so much about, you know, the kings and the judges
- 27:27Speaker 1: and all of that. Now I'm excited to talk about
- 27:29Speaker 1: what happens after the Israelites come back into Israel from
- 27:34Speaker 1: Babylonian captivity. So we're going to get into some of
- 27:36Speaker 1: the problems that they have when they're back in the land,
- 27:39Speaker 1: specifically from their Samaritan neighbors, and why the Israelites always
- 27:44Speaker 1: hated the Samaritans. We'll get into the history of that
- 27:47Speaker 1: tomorrow on the podcast, So hopefully all of you guys
- 27:50Speaker 1: tune in tomorrow and also Thursday for some wonderful episodes
- 27:55Speaker 1: here on the Bible Explained faithul listeners have a fantastic
