- 0:55do get started, I want to encourage you, if you've not already,
- 0:58to pick up your copy of What Made the Golden Age Shine. In this
- 1:02essay, I examine what made Golden Age entertainers such as Jimmy Duranty and Luke
- 1:10Costello so popular, and what makes Golden Age entertainment continue to attract new audiences
- 1:15to this day. You'll find out this in What Made the Golden Age Shine,
- 1:19Available for your kindle. Well Alive with Your Alive in Your Hands concluded
- 1:26its first running nineteen forty nine, and When People Are Funny went on vacation
- 1:33again in nineteen fifty. Once again, the program was set up, this
- 1:38time with a new actor playing Jonathan Keg. The actor in question was Carlton
- 1:45Cadell. Cadell really was better known for some of his performances as an announcer.
- 1:53He was known for working on Amis and Andy for instance, as well
- 1:59as the Seal Test Variety Theater with Dorothy Lamore. However, he had done
- 2:05his fair share of acting work. Perhaps his most notable notable role was as
- 2:12a Tarzan in the nineteen thirties, and then later on in nineteen fifty two,
- 2:19he would become the last radio actor to play the role of sky King,
- 2:24So a true radio performer taking over here for this nineteen fifty run.
- 2:32There would be nineteen fifty one run of Alife with Your Hands that would star
- 2:38Lee Bowman, but none of those episodes are available, so this is the
- 2:44last John keg will here. Cadell would also take on the role in nineteen
- 2:50fifty two. So here is the first case we have from the Carlton Cadell
- 2:55era. This one is from May twenty of nineteen fifty or twenty fifth,
- 3:01nineteen fifty, and the tunnel is Carol Carson murdered, Raleigh Cigarettes present friends,
- 3:10crib of Earl's, Stanley Cartner's A light in your hand? Was there
- 3:17a door between the rooms? What time did you deliver the groceries? Where
- 3:23was the poker? Listen while we place a light in your hands. Decisions
- 3:42recently issued by the Federal Trade Commission, an agency of the United States government,
- 3:46should convent you. You cannot believe in protest. You cannot believe in
- 3:52those tests what you can believe your own eyes. So take the Raleigh eye
- 3:57test and see for yourself. The only real important difference between leading brands of
- 4:01cigarettes, A difference you can believe because it's a difference you can see the
- 4:08rawlygh prophet sharing premium coupon. You never know when you step from the safety
- 4:19of your home when you may witness a violent death and be called upon to
- 4:25testifiles to what you saw and heard, and suddenly find yourself with a life
- 4:31in your hand. Murder is a dark enigma that strikes fear into the heart
- 4:39of man. Strange, vaffling, mysterious, but the darkest crime. One
- 4:44man can invent, another man can unravel. Such a man as Jonathan Kay
- 4:48created by Earl Stanley Gartner, the world's most popular mystery writer, creator of
- 4:55Carrymason, Christopher London, and many other outstanding characters. I beg your pardon,
- 5:09it's a seat taken. No, it isn't sit down, won't you
- 5:13thanks? Where are you headed? For Bare Lake, Illinois to do a
- 5:17little fishing. Oh good idea. You're entitled to a little rest after that
- 5:23Jackson case. I beg your pardon, have we men? No, I'm
- 5:29Joe Maxwell at the Times. See it's a reporter's business to know people like
- 5:32you, mister Keig. Well, thank you very much. You've been helped
- 5:38me out if you will. This work you do is a meekest curii.
- 5:43Would you explain it to me? You see, I've never reported one of
- 5:46your cases, but I might some time, and it would help me to
- 5:49know what an amikast curii is. Glad to help you, Joe. An
- 5:54amikas curii, which is translated literally as a friend of the court, is
- 6:00a person who is an expert in a specific field, who, without serving
- 6:03either the prosecution or the defense, helps the court to discover the objective truth.
- 6:10Well, I know you're an expert at cross examination. Do you cross
- 6:14examine a witness till you finally get the truth? That's about the size of
- 6:17it, you know, Joe, It's amazing how many times the testimony of
- 6:23a completely innocent bystander is the thing that brings out the truth. Any of
- 6:28us may at any time be witnessed or a crime. What we see and
- 6:31hear may mean someone's life. Even now, somewhere about us, there may
- 6:39be a crime in the making. Get away from that wind and help me
- 6:57with you what you're doing. It's Betsy More. She's following Matt and the
- 7:03harrow. She's too little. She's gonna fall and get her. Oh now,
- 7:08don't worry nothing about that. Matt. The soon lose legs. Let
- 7:12bets to get hurt. Matt can't be watching the child always. That man
- 7:15got his choice the farm. We'll go to sea before he lets that young
- 7:18and get into mischief. And that ain't no good either. More, old
- 7:23man Carson said Matt, and I was to raise her. Can't do that
- 7:27unless we got money from out of the farm. Nah, don't Fritz sue
- 7:30Betsy's old rye say you hear what Tom Child said when he brung the groceries
- 7:35from town today? No? What was that said? He heard from lawyer
- 7:40Bates. They let Betsy's More out the penitentiary a week ago, Carol loose,
- 7:46Oh more, do you think she'll come back here? I don't know,
- 7:51Matty, Carol Carson do most anything again, She ain't gonna get Betsy
- 7:57back. You hear me more. Don't you go and get all wrought up,
- 8:01old man Carson, give Betsy to you and Mattterbringo. I do wish
- 8:07they've been some ripe moment writing Cortis of the law. Better what happened?
- 8:16What happened to better? She was running after me while I was watching her
- 8:20much as a cook. She must have tripped on a rock in a house
- 8:24to cut her hand on one of the blades, and it's set her off.
- 8:26Can't do nothing with her. Don't give me that child that wills the
- 8:31honey out your take on, Brandy, fix it off. Is she hurt
- 8:41bad? Mos? No, her hands cut a bit, but she's mostly
- 8:43scared. I'm gonna take her in, wash that handoff some you doo.
- 8:48Don't worry none. I'll take care of her. Dear Monsieur is wonderful with
- 8:54a child, soup. Yeah, she acts just like it was her own.
- 8:58I guess she wanted a grand child much as we wanted our own baby.
- 9:01We got our own baby now, sou oh Man Carson said Betsy was
- 9:05our Tom Charles told him all to let Carol loose last week. To hear
- 9:09that. Yeah, they tol him in town yesterday. I didn't want to
- 9:13worry none, Honey, I know man, thing that worries me. Can
- 9:20Carol take Betsy away from us? Can't? She? Mat? I couldn't
- 9:26stand it, Oh Man, Carson, give bets it to us. He
- 9:28didn't want the woman killed his boy to raise his grand child, even if
- 9:33she has bets his real mother. Caroline. Gotta take Betsy away from us.
- 9:37So not over my dead body, Matt. Someone's coming, probably Jay
- 9:50Smith is Mayor's about the Colt. She's just driving up. Where's my rival?
- 9:56No, Mad, don't do nothing right? She's quiet, So come
- 9:58on you too, Ma? What do you want here? Carol? Why
- 10:09the gun? Math? What do you want here? Hello? Sue?
- 10:13How are you? Ma? Missus Fisher to you? What are you doing
- 10:18here? What do you think? I came from my kids? You ain't
- 10:22gonna get get out of here, Carrol. No used to argue. I
- 10:28got a court order. I said, get out of here. Take it

- 10:45I'm gonna have my kid. I'm giving you till I count three one two.
- 10:58Matt, you had no right to threaten Missus Carson with a rifle.
- 11:01Missus Carson Betsy's real mother. Judge Slade gave an order putting Betsy in her
- 11:07mother's custody till it could be a trial on the matter. But Sheriff cal
- 11:11Carson ain't fitting now, Matt, the courts the best judge he wants fit.
- 11:15John, I've no do since you was well, since we played together
- 11:20as kids, and you know well's me. This woman ain't the one should
- 11:24have Betsy. Please, Chef, We've had Betsy two years. She's just
- 11:30like our own. If you people want to bring suit for custody the child,
- 11:33you can do so. In the meantime, the court says Betsy's be
- 11:37turned over to her real mother. No, that woman just wants to get
- 11:41hold of all Matt Carson's money. She don't care about my Betsy. You
- 11:46can't do it, so be quiet, Sheriff. I don't know what he'll
- 11:52have to do, But Bets is our child, and that woman ain't never
- 11:56gone to raise her. Oh, I've had all I'm gonna take from you.
- 12:09Betsy's my brand, and I'm gonna keep her. Think after all I
- 12:13put up with from Gil Coffin, after being shut up in prison for two
- 12:16long years, do you think after all that, I'm gonna have enough of
- 12:18the show. I got that as long as I got her, I got
- 12:22this farm, and I'm gonna keep him both. Now you get out of
- 12:28here, get down before I think it's a friend day Finer was coming out
- 12:54of being che bag gilt Cane. Very listen to that young and when you
- 13:05little Betsy ain't been the same kids since she come to live with her mother.
- 13:09That Carol Carson ain't no good. Matt Wilson ever heard that youngster take
- 13:16on like that? Huh? Cried it down. This is Carson. This
- 13:26is Carson Groceries. Must have gone out and left the kidd a. This
- 13:37is Carson Grocery. I don't want to wake Betsy. I'll just put the
- 13:45stuff in the kitchen here. What kind of mother is she? Well?
- 14:07The sheriff all said, this is Matt Wilson ament the carcious place. You
- 14:11better get out you right away. The body is murdered. Calcarson smokers.
- 14:28It pays two ways to smoke. Rawley a cigarette. It pays with top

- 15:31name's John Uncat. I'm sure here, Oh glad to know you, Sheriff.
- 15:35Sit down, Thank you. I haven't been out fishing all morning because
- 15:39I finished dressing him going downstairs for by the lunch. Canna join me,
- 15:43pleasure, Miss King? Tell me, ain't you the when I read about
- 15:46the papers Fellow helps judges find out who really commits crimes. Well, I
- 15:50guess I have had a good deal of publicity quite often, I act as
- 15:54a meeks CURII and yeah, you're in the man. I wanted to see
- 16:00if I'm here for a little rest and vacation. All I want to do
- 16:03is fish might to find bash from bare Lake. I was out there this
- 16:07morning. Why do you know I had one on my line? Oh it
- 16:11must have been that long landing. No, unfortunately, just another big one
- 16:18that got away. Mister Keke Just what is a meekas curity? I I
- 16:23got a general idea, of course, but I'd like to get a straight
- 16:26well and a meekas cury. I as a person who has special qualifications to
- 16:32help a court discover the true facts. I cross examined with us, mister
- 16:38Keg. I ain't a court, but I sure want to find out the
- 16:41truth. Do you think you could help me in an investigation something like that?
- 16:45I don't ever do any kind of detective work where we had a kimmin.
- 16:49Last week, woman named Carol Carson shot her husband a couple of years
- 16:53back, just get out of penitentiary. Who killed her some of her husband's
- 16:57family. No, only family her husband, Bill Carson had with his paw.
- 17:02We died right after sent Carol away. Wait a minute, sheriff.
- 17:06The minimum penalty for murder in this state of fourteen years could the wo would
- 17:10have been released so soon they called it manslaughter every one to five. I
- 17:15see this woman had a baby, little girl named Betsy. He's three now
- 17:19old. Man Carson Bill's paw left everything he had Betsy and left her in
- 17:25the care of Matt and Sue Wilson. Oh, she and majested door Betsy
- 17:29so jama she lives with him. Go on, chirl Well, Carol come
- 17:33back to town about ten days ago. Got an order from Judge Slade given
- 17:37her a custody of Betsy. The Wilson's never had no legal papers on their
- 17:41care and for the child. The mother is an entitle to the child's schirff
- 17:45shucks. She only wanted Bets his money. What happened Saturday afternoon about quarter
- 17:51past three, Matt called me from the Carson place, said somebody killed Carol.
- 17:56I'm out there. Somebody put a bullet, if a bullet right through
- 18:00the back of her head. Then I went to Wilson farm. Matt and
- 18:03the others was there. There was little Betsy. All Matted to say was
- 18:08he found Carrol dead. Called me then took Betsy home with him. That's
- 18:14not at all unlikely. No. Only thing wrong about it. The bullet
- 18:18that killed Carol come from Matt Wilson's rifle. I found the rifle was kitchen.
- 18:25What does he have to say about that? Nothing, won't talk.
- 18:29I ain't arrest him yet, but I got arrest somebody soon. I got
- 18:33them all come to my office this afternoon. I was wondering if you could
- 18:37be there. Well, I don't see how I could help, Sarah.
- 18:41Mister Kay, I've known the spokes all my life. They're good people.
- 18:48Maybe you could find out the truth. Will you be there. I'll do
- 18:53what I can. That's the story, Matt, up from Springs. You
- 19:03say it was a bullet from your rifle that killed Carrol. She eat holistic
- 19:07proven. What's that say? Nothing now, Matt. That attitude is going
- 19:12to help. None was itself de panch. Carrol's body was lying in front
- 19:18of fireplace, crossed the poker like she was drawn for it. That's very
- 19:22interesting. You've got some questions you want to ask this, Kate, one
- 19:26or two if I may, sheriff. You say Carrol's body was found in
- 19:30the living room in front of the fireplace. She'd been shot to the back
- 19:34of the head. Right Where in the house did little Betsy sleep? Her
- 19:40trip was in a small room just off the living room. Was there a
- 19:44door between the two rooms, yes, the one. Did you examine the
- 19:48whole house? When over the whole place? Nothing was upstair? I understand.
- 19:51But what I am getting at is this, was there any indication that
- 19:56anyone else had been in the house that day? No? I can wait
- 20:00a minute. There was a bag of groceries shutting just inside to kitchen door.
- 20:06That had me Tom Childs probably made a delivery sometime that day. Has
- 20:11the time of death been established? Carner figures it was between two thirty and
- 20:15three clock? Thank you, schriff. Now man, what's your story?
- 20:22Nothing much. I went up to the Carson placed around three. Carol was
- 20:26lying there dead. I run into the baby's room to see she was all
- 20:30right. She was sleeping peacefully upon the sheriff. What happened? Then?
- 20:33I woke Betsy up and carried her home. That's all. Where was your
- 20:38rifle at that time? In my hand? Why did you go to see
- 20:42Carol Carson? I wanted her to give Betsy back. How long had you
- 20:47had the rifle with it ever since I went out after we had about twelve
- 20:51o'clock. Excuse me, mister keg Man. If you had that rifle with
- 20:55you from twelve oct to after the murdered, then you must have shut that
- 20:59sea. I Carol, I didn't shoot no one. I potted the crow
- 21:03over the corn, that's all. But Matt, ballistics proved the murder bullet
- 21:07was fired from your rifle. I don't know nothing about them ballistics. I
- 21:11guess they could make a mistake like anyone else. Oh, they don't make
- 21:15no mistakes, Matt. I guess after that, there's not much I can
- 21:18do. Garner jury says it's murder. I got arrest you, Matt,
- 21:23for murder. Why. I'm sorry. Soon, I don't have no choice
- 21:30in the murder. Stay out of this soon, Sherriff. Good watch,
- 21:36right, the sheriff. I'd like to ask these people some questions. Go
- 21:38ahead, Thank you, mister Wilson. When you found Carol's body, you
- 21:44said the baby was in the next room asleep, that's right, Sheriff.
- 21:48When you got the phone call, did you hear the baby in the background?
- 21:52Didn't hear nothing? But Matt, I see are you certain Carol Carson
- 21:57was killed before three o'clock. Dak Poe says, no, earlier in two
- 22:02thirty. No layer in three strange. What's the caliber of Matt's rifles?
- 22:07Sheriff thirty or six? Take a lot of noise in a closed room?
- 22:11M this is Wilson. What did you do after the midday meal? My
- 22:17night tidied up. Then I took the car and went into town to match
- 22:21some material for a dress. What time did you leave and what time did
- 22:25you get back? That's about one, I guess got back near three thirty.
- 22:30Did you spend all that time matching material? Well? No, no,
- 22:34I didn't that. I was upset about losing Bessie. I didn't even
- 22:38go to town at all. I just drove her on back road once I
- 22:42stopped the car and had myself a good cry. Yes, I understand.
- 22:48Tell me about Betsy. Is she a calm and placid child of a sound
- 22:53sleeper? Oh goodness, No, she's real high strung, wakes up if
- 22:57there's any noise. It is easy, too easy, I say, hmm,
- 23:06missus Fisher. Where were you that afternoon? The home footing up to
- 23:11make it all afternoon? Ye? Between one o'clock when Sue left in the
- 23:17car and the time Matt got home at Betsy. Did you see anyone?
- 23:21No, not a soul. Now, now, let me get this straight.
- 23:25Missus Fisher was at home alone at the time of the murder. Sue
- 23:29Wilson was riding around in the car, also alone, and Matt was What
- 23:33were you doing, Matt, just wandering around the farm checking the crops and
- 23:38a life carrying your rifle. Yes, did you see anyone? No?
- 23:45I wonder if you three would mind waiting in the hall for a few minutes.
- 23:48I'd like to speak to the sheriff in private. What was the idea
- 23:56that it's okay? You know, Sheriff, if this where anything but murder,
- 24:00I'd take my hat off of those people. One of them is undoubtedly
- 24:04guilty, but look at it from a jury's point of view. Each of
- 24:08them had a strong motive in love for the child. Not one of them
- 24:12had anything even remotely like an alibi, and they all had a chance to
- 24:18get the rifle. But Mat says he hand right, if he's telling the
- 24:22truth, they must be guilty. I suspect he would say that even if
- 24:26he didn't have it to protect whichever of the women he thinks did it.
- 24:32What about fingerprints on the rifle and all are prints on it? Naturally it
- 24:36would now, Sheriff, You've got enough to convince the jury that one of
- 24:40them is guilty. But the way things stand now, the jury wouldn't be
- 24:44able to decide which one, and that means they would all go free.
- 24:48What he suggest, mister King, We need more testimony. There's one other
- 24:52person I'd like to call, someone we haven't talked to. I'll get anyone
- 24:56you want, Miss Keg, anyone at all. Jonathan Keg is about the
- 25:03question a person who had absolutely no connection with a crime, except that he
- 25:07happened to be in a certain place at a certain time. If that person
- 25:11were you, could you possibly recall what you had seen or heard? Your
- 25:18responsibility would be great, or you would hold a life in your hands.
- 25:33You cannot believe in throat tests. You cannot believe in noose tests. Decisions
- 25:38recently issued by the United States government Federal Trade Commission should convince every intelligent smooker
- 25:45that you cannot believe in throat tests. You cannot believe in those tests.
- 25:51These distinguished government experts, appointed by law to protect the Public against false advertising
- 25:56claims have declared one there is no reliable basis for claims that one brand is
- 26:02superior to another in respect to throat irritant to all manufacturers of leading brands of
- 26:08cigarettes by their leaf tobacco from the same sources. With these two facts in
- 26:14mine, give yourself Raleigh's famous eye test. Hold up two packs of cigarettes,
- 26:21one of Rawleigh's, one of any other leading brand. Turn them around.
- 26:26Take the eye test. You'll see the difference. Yes, you'll see
- 26:32that only Rawleigh's have a coupon on the back, and smokers that rawleigh profit
- 26:37sharing coupon is the only real important difference between leading brands of cigarette. It's
- 26:42a difference you can believe because it's a difference you can see. So switch
- 26:48to Rawleigh Cigarette, America's greatest cigarette back. Jonathan Kegg has asked the sheriff
- 27:00to summon Tom Childs to his office. Childs is the man who delivers groceries
- 27:07to the farms in the area. He's also sent for Little Betsy, although
- 27:11she has been kept outside. Mister Kegg has now begun to question Tom child
- 27:15it's a child. At what time, as a rule, do you deliver
- 27:18groceries depends on who the form app to leave town about one? Was it
- 27:23usual for you to reach the same farms at about the same time every day?
- 27:27Yet? What time did you usually get to the Carson place? Around
- 27:30two forty five? Is that the time you got there last Saturday? About
- 27:34then? When you arrived, did you see missus Carson? Nope, I
- 27:38didn't see no one just opened the door and set the stuff on the kitchen
- 27:42floor and went on the way. Didn't you knock or call out? Yeah,
- 27:47but not too loud. Didn't want to rouse Betsy. She just got
- 27:52quieted down. What do you mean, just got quieted down? As I
- 27:56was driving up the lane, I here start that I am screaming. She
- 28:00does sometimes when she's really scared. But by the time I get to the
- 28:04house, she was all quiet, so I didn't make much noise. Now
- 28:08think carefully, mister Childs. Did you hear anything before the child began to
- 28:14scream? Up? A shot? Possibly? I didn't know. There's lots
- 28:18of shooting hereabouts, what with crows and all. Thank you, mister Childs.
- 28:23Where is Betsy sheriff written? Outside? But you ever brought in?
- 28:26Now? Please and have everyone else but Matt leave the room. Well,
- 28:34Betsy, you're a pretty little girl. How are you today, my dear?
- 28:40She don't talk much to strength, No, she doesn't. I hate
- 28:45to do this. She'll be frightened, but we've got to find the truth.
- 28:51Go ahead, Sheriff. You'd better come Betsy down, mister Wilson.
- 29:00She tried. I can't. Can't. No one calm her down when she's
- 29:03like that. But marfis. Oh ahead, missus Fisher, you're the only
- 29:08one who can fire. I think the best thing is for you to tell
- 29:19us just what happened as the Fisher. All right, I'll tell, but
- 29:23I want you all to know I wasn't gonna let Matt go to jail.
- 29:26I'd have told you for i'd let that happen. He's been real good to
- 29:30my girl. I reckon you would have. Thanks Jonathan, Well, I
- 29:37went over to the Carson place Saturday afternoon to talk some scents in the Carol.
- 29:41But she wouldn't listen. I had Matt's rifle. Don't ask me why.
- 29:47I guess I was gonna scare her anyhow. She wouldn't give Betsy back.
- 29:51I argue, I just didn't do no good, and then she told
- 29:56me to gift and reached for the poker. That's when I shot her.
- 30:02Please go on, missus Fishers woke up and started to cry. I went
- 30:07into quieter. While I was doing that, I heard Tom child bringing the
- 30:10grocery. I didn't know what to do. I knew the child would sleep
- 30:15awhile she was all right. I couldn't think straight, so I wandered home
- 30:21so as I could plan what to do. A plumb for GoF MAT's rifle,
- 30:26and then before I could do anything, Matt come in with the baby.
- 30:29Said he found Carol. Said when I found my rifle laying near Carrol,
- 30:33I thought maybe Suard. I knew how she loved the baby. So
- 30:37I carried the rifle home and said I'd had it all the time. I
- 30:41think we know the truth, Sheriff. I think self defense would be a
- 30:45reasonable plea. I think maybe you're right, mister Keg. But tell me
- 30:48how did you get to the truth. Thanks to the testimony of Tom Childs,
- 30:52who just happened to be in the vicinity, we learned that Betsy woke
- 30:56up and scream. It was logical that if you shot of a rifle in
- 31:00the room next to where such a high strung child was sleeping, that child
- 31:03would wake up and scream. Missus Fisher was the only one who could quiet
- 31:08Betsy when she was really upset. Thanks for your heir, mister Keig,
- 31:12you saved man. And as for mar Well, we got lots of justice
- 31:18here bout keg. That was the most interesting case. It was, indeed,
- 31:32mister Wallace, and thanks to the testimony of an innocent bystander, we
- 31:36were able to arrive at the truth. Thank very much with the keg and
- 31:38good night, good night, mister Wallace. Friends, here's a cordial invitation

- 33:25your hand. Welcome back. I love this episode. This is probably my
- 33:47favorite episode of the series that I've heard so far. I've heard a few
- 33:52others that come after this, not all of them yet, but I love
- 33:58this episode in that they take Tag kind of out of his normal rules to
- 34:04get to the to get to the truth of the case, and I find
- 34:12that just a great twest. And I love the plot as well. It
- 34:16definitely creates a more sympathetic case, but the cross examination skills of Jonathan Tag
- 34:25come in handy and he's able to solve the case. Well, that'll do
- 34:30it for today. We will be back with you tomorrow with Let George Do
- 34:35It, and then join us next Tuesday for Life with your Life in your
