- 0:05may you remember that you are a flower essence for this world and you are
- 0:09creating ripples of change everywhere you are, everywhere you grow,
- 0:13and every time you say yes to your own becoming.
- 0:26Hello and welcome back to Remember Why You Are Here,
- 0:29a podcast for seekers and sensitives where you can relax,
- 0:34receive,
- 0:35reconnect to yourself and remember the most important thing of all -
- 0:40why you're here. Lately,
- 0:43I've just been in love with all of the spring flowers
- 0:47where I live.
- 0:49We are in a north facing cove here in the mountains of Western
- 0:53North Carolina,
- 0:54and so we have this whole parade of spring ephemerals that
- 0:59happens here starting probably in late February and then going
- 1:03through till the end of May, depending on when the canopy closes.
- 1:09And so I've just been in this love affair recently with the flowers,
- 1:13spending as much time as I can outside with them and really
- 1:17receiving their medicine. Humans have been obsessed
- 1:22with flowers forever.
- 1:24There is archeological evidence as far back as our neanderthal
- 1:29kin of human species burying their
- 1:34dead with flowers,
- 1:35of flowers being this symbol of
- 1:40life, of possibility, of openings.
- 1:44There's such a joy that comes with the spring flowers every
- 1:49year.
- 1:50It really feels like this promise of life beginning
- 1:54again, and not just the life of the earth, but our own lives.
- 1:58This sense of no matter what pattern of stuckness you've
- 2:03been in, that there is new possibility coming.
- 2:07There's new blooms on the way,
- 2:10and flowers are really just so good at showing us that.
- 2:16I've been a flower essence maker now for 15 years,
- 2:21and it was a huge part of how I began my whole journey into
- 2:26herbalism. It really started for me with discovering flower essences,
- 2:31and has remained a cornerstone in my practice all these years,
- 2:35throughout all the years that I had my apothecary,
- 2:37I had a flower essence line,
- 2:40made and sold flower essences around the world.
- 2:44And in my experiences with working with flower essences,
- 2:48of which there's been so many,
- 2:50so incredible experiences sitting with flowers,
- 2:54there's been this one message that has come through a lot for me and
- 2:59has been so profoundly helpful in my life.
- 3:02I then started sharing this messages when I was teaching,
- 3:06especially when I was teaching retreats and working with people in person,
- 3:10and I found that this message was just so helpful for everyone else
- 3:15who heard it too.
- 3:17So for this podcast today, I want to share that message with you,
- 3:23this message that can really help you reframe your understanding of yourself and
- 3:28the role that you're here to play in this world.
- 3:31So keep listening for the audio version of this beloved video called
- 3:36"You Are Flower Essence for this World."
- 3:41One of my all time favorite medicines are flower essences.
- 3:45Flower essences are the energetic imprint of a flower in bloom,
- 3:50captured in water and diluted down so that it works on our subtle,
- 3:55emotional and spiritual bodies.
- 3:58I've seen incredible shifts happen for myself and my clients through working
- 4:03with flower essences. At this point in my life,
- 4:06flower essences are my favorite medicines to be working with on a daily basis
- 4:11because I've seen firsthand just how much transformation they can bring.
- 4:16Some people might wonder,
- 4:17how do flower essences make such a big change if they're so dilute,
- 4:21if they're so small? But my answer would be,
- 4:24part of how that change is made is being so small and yet so
- 4:29impactful.
- 4:31Over the past 10 years teaching the practice of flower essences to people around
- 4:36the world, I've come to realize something pretty special,
- 4:41and this message is to let you know that you are a flower
- 4:45essence for this world. So at its most basic,
- 4:49we work with flowers in our essence-making practice because
- 4:54flowers capture the possibility of blooming.
- 4:58When a flowering plant blooms,
- 5:00it has really fulfilled its life blueprint, its highest creative potential.
- 5:05It is the penultimate expression of that plant's heart and soul.
- 5:10So when we work with flower essences ourselves,
- 5:13we are inviting that expression inside of ourselves to take root,
- 5:18grow,
- 5:18and flower. We're all here because we have gifts to bring to this world
- 5:23and flower essences, through their subtle medicines,
- 5:27help us to see those gifts,
- 5:29help us to dissolve those blocks and really bloom forth with our gifts
- 5:34without fear and with joy. When you make a flower essence,
- 5:39you are literally just taking one drop of water that this flower has sat
- 5:43in and you can create from that one drop of water,
- 5:47many different bottles of medicine.
- 5:50It's amazing what one drop can do to change the world.
- 5:55One of the things that I've seen over and over again in working with different
- 5:59people from around the world,
- 6:01is it can feel so good to come together and be in community and be
- 6:05supporting each other on these paths of finding our medicine and connecting to
- 6:10the living world.
- 6:11And then it can feel hard to go back to the communities that we live in,
- 6:16to go back to our work lives or to go back to families that don't totally
- 6:21understand what it is, what we're doing,
- 6:23or why it matters to us. So many times I've had my students say to
- 6:28me, I love being in this community and I love this information,
- 6:33but when I go back into my community at home,
- 6:36I feel like I'm too small to make a difference, and it just feels too hard.
- 6:40And to them and to you, I say this:
- 6:44you are a flower essence for this world. Wherever you live right now,
- 6:49whether it's an environment where there's a lot of people who are on board with
- 6:53something like flower essences or you live in a community where someone would
- 6:56look at you like you're nuts if you even brought it up,
- 7:00know that your presence in that community is the thing that is shifting
- 7:04everything on a very subtle level. When we make flower essences,
- 7:09we're literally just floating that bloom in pure water.
- 7:13Just that flower being in water changes the chemical structure of the
- 7:17water. You, who you are, your unique medicine,
- 7:22the things you're passionate about, the things you hold close to your heart,
- 7:26although it may not be understood always by the people around you,
- 7:29know that that heart energy is literally changing the
- 7:33environment that you're moving through. In fact,
- 7:36I think the earth is asking a lot of us to go into environments that feel
- 7:41harder or that feel harsher because the earth is asking us to bring
- 7:46medicine to those places. Even though it might not feel that way sometimes,
- 7:51you are medicine for your community.
- 7:53You are like a flower essence dropped into the well,
- 7:57and whether or not the people that you're around realize it,
- 8:01you are helping them to open up to what's inside of them that they have
- 8:05kept under lock and key. Just like a flower essence,
- 8:09your presence is what is helping them to dissolve the blocks that
- 8:13have stood in the way of their happiness, their blooming,
- 8:16and the fulfillment of their life blueprint. The amazing thing is you don't
- 8:21have to explain anything.
- 8:23You don't have to get people on board with what you're passionate about.
- 8:28All you have to do is act like a flower essence,
- 8:31be yourself.
- 8:33Think about how one flower can grow up in the midst of a city park,
- 8:38and it can change its environment just by being itself and be
- 8:43willing to bloom. So you in your community, wherever you are in the world,
- 8:48have the ability to shift your environment and shift the hearts of those
- 8:53who are in your sphere just by being brave enough to bloom,
- 8:58by being brave enough to be who you are and care about what you care about,
- 9:03being honest about what moves you. And when someone asks you to share,
- 9:08being willing to share that too. When I take my flower essences in the morning,
- 9:12sometimes I just put one drop in a glass of water that I'll drink for the rest
- 9:17of the day.
- 9:18So no matter where you are in life or how much you feel like you've done or
- 9:22haven't done yet, know that that one drop of who you are, that essence,
- 9:27is literally changing the fabric of reality around you,
- 9:30and you don't need to do anything except be yourself.
- 9:37Wow, that message never fails to help me no matter where I am in my
- 9:42life. That reframe,
- 9:45that understanding from the earth and from the flowers,
- 9:49has helped me so immensely over the years to remember who I am,
- 9:52to remember that what I'm doing is valuable, is important,
- 9:56and that I'm already really fulfilling my mission on this planet just by saying
- 10:01yes to the continuation of my own unfoldment. So if you find
- 10:06yourself listening to this message and feel curious about flower essences
- 10:10specifically, how to make your own flower essences,
- 10:14I thought I would share with you here a part two follow-up,
- 10:16which is a guide to making your own flower essences.
- 10:21This is one of the things that I love the most to help people with,
- 10:26to teach people about, because it's actually so simple,
- 10:28and when I first started making flower essences,
- 10:32there was really very few sources out there talking about how to do
- 10:37it. And it's one of the most creative,
- 10:39individualized processes that I see in the herbalism world.
- 10:44It's just the magic that you bring as an individual to making your own flower
- 10:47essences is incredible. You can make flower essences out of any
- 10:52flower. If a flower is highly toxic,
- 10:56I would recommend staying away from that just because with
- 11:00that,
- 11:01you really need to make sure absolutely what you're doing with the dilution
- 11:04process. But outside of flowers that are overtly toxic,
- 11:08which is something you can easily look up for your region,
- 11:11you can make a flower essence from any flower.
- 11:13So it doesn't have to be a flower that is something that's part of a material
- 11:18medica. It doesn't have to be a flower that is edible.
- 11:20All flowers hold energy of healing that help us
- 11:24unblock our potential,
- 11:26that help us see ourselves as the flower essences that we are for this world.
- 11:31So if you are curious about making your own flower essences this spring or
- 11:36whatever season you're in, keep listening for that tutorial.
- 11:41The elements that you need to make flower essences are simple.
- 11:45You'll just need a bowl of water, scissors, sunlight,
- 11:50intention, and your flower.
- 11:54When we make a flower essence,
- 11:55we work with a flower that's blooming and growing right now.
- 11:58So not necessarily a cut flower,
- 12:00but one that's growing around you. The first step to making your flower essence
- 12:05is to decide on an essence.
- 12:07And I often find that a particular flower is really attracting me,
- 12:11is really igniting my curiosity.
- 12:13That's always the flower to go with first. Number two is to gather
- 12:18together your bowl, the highest quality water you can find,
- 12:22a pair of scissors, and to go out to your flower. Once there,
- 12:27we get to step number three and the most important step in my opinion,
- 12:31and that's to ask permission:
- 12:34to sit with this flower and ask this flower permission to harvest its
- 12:39blooms in this medicine. This is a really important moment of making a
- 12:44heart to heart connection with this plant.
- 12:46And when you receive permission from a flower,
- 12:49that flower is opening the gateway for all of its healing to be translated into
- 12:54your medicine. You're going to listen for this nod of
- 12:59ascent, and this might come in through a sound, maybe the wind moving through,
- 13:03or a bee landing on the flower. Wherever you're at,
- 13:07just really sink into your meditative practice and open to whatever answer is
- 13:11there. You might hear no, and if that's the case,
- 13:15graciously accept that and move on. Most of the time. However,
- 13:19if I've been getting a message to work with a specific essence,
- 13:23the answer will be yes. At this point in time, I often like to give a gift,
- 13:28something that is important or precious to me,
- 13:31just as a way to show this flower and this plant being that I'm here to be in
- 13:35relationship. Step number four is to take your scissors and harvest that
- 13:40flower directly into your bowl of water. Now,
- 13:45I want to make a note here about scarcity. Some flowers,
- 13:48particularly if they're wildflowers, are endangered.
- 13:51So it's important to do your research and make sure that this isn't an at-risk
- 13:55species. If it's abundant flower, say garden flour or a weed,
- 14:00then you don't need to worry about it. You can choose one flower,
- 14:05a whole flower head or several flowers,
- 14:08taking into account the diversity and the amount of flowers in your
- 14:13general area. As always,
- 14:15ask permission with each bloom and get that feeling of yes before you clip them.
- 14:21Step number five is to set your essence out underneath the sunlight.
- 14:26There's a special kind of alchemy that happens between the sun, the water,
- 14:30and the bloom.
- 14:32I like to let my essence sit for about three to six hours in the full
- 14:35sun. That said,
- 14:37I've also made essences on cloudy days or under the moon.
- 14:41No matter where we are and what time we're in on this planet,
- 14:44the sunlight's always coming into our atmosphere,
- 14:48whether it's through the moon or through the far suns of stars.
- 14:53Either way, I want you to follow your intuition,
- 14:56knowing that the traditional practice is full sunlight,
- 15:00for a time span of three to six hours. Step number six,
- 15:04when you feel your essence is done,
- 15:06you're going to take it inside and siphon off that water from the bloom.
- 15:10I like to use a small coffee filter or cheesecloth to get any
- 15:15particulates out,
- 15:16and you're going to siphon that water into a jar or a bottle and preserve it.
- 15:21You can either preserve it with 50% alcohol,
- 15:25so you'd fill up the jar halfway with your mother essence water and halfway with
- 15:29alcohol, brandy is traditional,
- 15:32or you can do 50% essence water and 50% apple
- 15:36cider vinegar if you're avoiding alcohol. Your apple cider vinegar and water
- 15:41mixture should last at least several months if kept in the fridge.
- 15:46Your alcohol and water mixture can last indefinitely.
- 15:50This is your mother essence,
- 15:52and you can take your essence directly from that bottle. Step number
- 15:57seven, if you choose to, would be to create a stock bottle.
- 16:01A stock bottle is made by simply taking one to seven drops of your mother
- 16:06essence and putting in a separate bottle.
- 16:08You would then fill that bottle with half water and half preservative of your
- 16:13choice,
- 16:14apple cider vinegar or alcohol. What you find in stores
- 16:18often is stock bottles,
- 16:20and part of the philosophy behind this is the more highly dilute the
- 16:25essences, the smaller it is, the deeper it can go into our deep, deep,
- 16:29deep places that are in need of healing.
- 16:32The philosophy behind taking a stock bottle is similar to homeopathics.
- 16:37When we dilute down our essence one extra step,
- 16:41we're actually making this medicine slightly smaller and therefore more
- 16:46readily available and received to both our emotional and spiritual
- 16:51bodies. So get out there this spring and try making your own flower
- 16:56essences.
- 16:56It is one of my favorite rituals and practices throughout the growing
- 17:01season.
- 17:04So now you have everything you need to make your own flower essence,
- 17:06and if you do, I would love to hear about it.
- 17:09You can leave me a voice message over on my website at
- 17:13asiasuler.com/remember,
- 17:15and it is one of the brightest spots of my day when I get a voice message
- 17:20from all of you. So I'd love to hear about how the process went,
- 17:24maybe what flower you made an essence from,
- 17:27and if this way of working with plants is exciting for you,
- 17:30if you want to go deeper,
- 17:31if you're ready to really step into a new era of working with the plants for
- 17:36healing,
- 17:37of trusting and knowing that your intuition has the ability to guide you
- 17:42into having a really vibrant, powerful healing relationships with plants.
- 17:47Then I have a in-depth program that I've run now for almost a decade called
- 17:51Intuitive Plant Medicine,
- 17:53where we go really deep into flower essences creation,
- 17:57practice, plant dreamwork, channeling with plants,
- 18:02ancestral plant work, on the body medicine,
- 18:05land healing. And that course is going to be on sale in just a few
- 18:09weeks. And the sale is actually going to be bigger than any sale I've ever,
- 18:14ever, ever done before.
- 18:15So if you've been eyeing this course or it sounds interesting to you,
- 18:20definitely stay tuned for that. And as you step deeper into whatever season of
- 18:25your life that you're in,
- 18:27may you remember that you are a flower essence for this world and you are
- 18:31creating ripples of change everywhere you are, everywhere you grow,
- 18:36and every time you say yes to your own becoming.
- 18:39And you are creating those ripples of change every
- 18:42time you simply remember why you're here.
