- 0:28little bit different. I'm going to be talking off the
- 0:31cuff about Spacex's Starship, which will be doing its third
- 0:36test flight, hopefully on Thursday of this week.
- 0:39Now, either Thursday or Friday. We're still waiting for the FAA
- 0:43to approve Starship's flight, but everything else is in place.
- 0:48SpaceX has tested the rocket booster numerous times.
- 0:52They've done cryogenic testing, which means they fill up the
- 0:56booster with cryogenic fluid and that makes it absolutely super
- 1:01cold because when a rocket fires its engines, it gets extremely
- 1:06hot. Now the fuel inside is pumped
- 1:09through. They make sure that the
- 1:11cryogenics work. They make sure that all the
- 1:13plumbing works on the base station down at stage zero.
- 1:19Stage zero is where they launched the rocket from.
- 1:22So they have the the rocket launching facility down at Boca
- 1:25Chica Beach, which is also known as Starbase, and the ground
- 1:30facilities, they've had a huge revamp recently they've added
- 1:35new, I've added new fuel decks, they've added new plumbing to
- 1:40the thing. It's been millions of dollars in
- 1:42the making and they've also added new piping.
- 1:47They've added new electronics to the the launch deck.
- 1:52They've also added a water deluge system, and if you're not
- 1:55familiar what a water deer system is, it basically pumps
- 1:58millions of gallons of water underneath the rocket for noise
- 2:03suppression and so basically the rocket doesn't explode the
- 2:08launchpad. This has kilotons worth of
- 2:12power. It is the most powerful rocket
- 2:15and the biggest rocket that's ever flown.
- 2:18They made it to space last time for the Ift 2 flight, IFT 1
- 2:23didn't go too well, but it went, you know, better than expected.
- 2:26Elon has said numerous times he didn't think it was gonna even
- 2:30get off the pad, but it cleared the pad, it launched And now the
- 2:37wonderful thing is they learned from the mistakes in IFT One
- 2:41from IFT one and both the rocket and the booster and the ship
- 2:45itself. Starship exploded during IFT
- 2:47One. Same thing happened during IFT
- 2:492, but during IFT 2 they started this thing called the Hot
- 2:54staging technique, and hot staging is when they ignite the
- 2:59rocket which is on top of the booster during stage separation.
- 3:04So about 50 seconds into the flight, I think it's about 50
- 3:07seconds. About a minute into the flight,
- 3:09they start to separate the the rocket and the booster itself.
- 3:14And that's right after Max Q, which is the most dynamic
- 3:17pressure that's put on the rocket during this flight.
- 3:20And once they make it past Max Q, they know they can go to the
- 3:23next stage, which is stage separation.
- 3:25Now stage separation is very important because you can't send
- 3:28the rocket booster and the Starship to space.
- 3:31The booster has to come back, land, get refurbished and then
- 3:36go up again. So what they did last time, hot
- 3:40staging at about a minute ish into the flight, they separated,
- 3:44started separating the booster and the ship.
- 3:47And when they did that they ignited the ship's rocket
- 3:50engines, which is in itself this is a rarely done move in Space
- 3:55Flight because it's just not needed.
- 3:57But something this powerful like need to push the booster away
- 4:02from the ship and they need that extra kick that the ship can get
- 4:06from the booster because it's pushing against the booster as
- 4:09the booster still pushing forward and up.
- 4:11So they use that kick stage the the hot staging to push it up
- 4:16even further and faster. So when they do that, the
- 4:19booster gets sent back down towards Earth.
- 4:22It does a flip, almost a full flip at that point, and then
- 4:26it's going to reignite its engines.
- 4:29The booster will reignite its engines, 33 Raptor engines when
- 4:32they started, but they're going to do a few of them on the way
- 4:35back in, what they do with a Falcon 9 rocket, very similar.
- 4:39And then they'll land the booster.
- 4:41This time I FT3, which we're talking about, they're going to
- 4:44be landing that softly in the Gulf of Mexico.
- 4:48Now, if this all goes as planned, the booster won't blow
- 4:52up. They'll do a very soft landing
- 4:54in the Gulf of Mexico because they have to learn how to land
- 4:57this. Elon said it took about 15
- 5:00flights for the Falcon 9 to land properly.
- 5:04Now if that's the case, SpaceX has about 10 more flights before
- 5:10the booster will land properly and the ship will land properly.
- 5:14But for Falcon Nine, they didn't have a top half of it.
- 5:18The fairing in anything on top of the booster is expendable,
- 5:22except when they send people to space.
- 5:24So the fairing just falls back down to Earth for a Falcon 9.
- 5:28And with Starship, there's a whole upper stage that they have
- 5:31to land, and they're going to land this thing vertically.
- 5:34Now the difference between IFT 2 and IFT 3?
- 5:37There's a couple. There's a few things we have to
- 5:39talk about as far as differences go, But before we do that, let's
- 5:43talk about what happened to the IFT 2 ship.
- 5:46It's a few minutes into the flight after the stage
- 5:49separation, after the booster blew up.
- 5:52As it was doing the flip, they did the flight termination
- 5:55system because they figured that the booster wasn't going to make
- 5:58it, so they blew it up. And few minutes into the flight
- 6:02after that, the ship was exploded as well because it
- 6:05wasn't going to make it. They released too much fuel they
- 6:08were going to do, they're going to bleed some fuel out, and then
- 6:12they had to terminate the flight at that point.
- 6:14So Booster didn't make it, Ship didn't make it.
- 6:18But from the data that they gathered from both of those
- 6:21occurrences, they made improvements for IFT 3.
- 6:24So when IFT 3 happens, we're hoping for a full stage
- 6:30separation, hot staging, and the flip maneuver by the Booster.
- 6:34This thing is massive by the way.
- 6:36If you've never seen this thing, it is about 250 feet tall.
- 6:41So think of a 25 story building, One of the biggest things that's
- 6:46ever flown to be honest with you, because it's so round as
- 6:49well. It's so big.
- 6:51It's 30 feet around, it's 9 meters in diameter.
- 6:54So The thing is massive, massive.
- 6:58And they're gonna do the flip maneuver, soft land it in the
- 7:03Gulf of Mexico, hopefully. And if they do that, that is a
- 7:07huge win. That's huge for a SpaceX 'cause.
- 7:10Then they can move forward with a guided soft landing at to
- 7:13certain parts of the ocean, or they can have a or sorry, the
- 7:17Gulf of Mexico. Or they could do a guided burn
- 7:21back towards Starbase and eventually I don't think they're
- 7:24gonna be doing it right away. They have another launch tower
- 7:26that they want to build before. I believe they're going to do a
- 7:29some sort of landing at Starbase.
- 7:32So having a landing pad at Starbase would be OK catching it
- 7:37with the tower, that's what they're going for because they
- 7:40can't do a landing on the booster without catching it.
- 7:46But if you've never seen the the Catch tower, it's it's also
- 7:49massive 400 foot tall 410 I believe it is 413 feet tall.
- 7:55It's a massive structure and when they catch this thing 250
- 8:01foot tall booster on a 400 foot tall tower, it's going to be
- 8:07absolutely amazing. So if they do that event,
- 8:09they'll do that eventually. I'm probably going to give them
- 8:11about 10 more flights before they even try that.
- 8:14They have to do a bunch of guided flights, make sure that
- 8:17everything works perfectly fine, and then if they can get it
- 8:22mailed for five or six flights in a row, I believe they'll be
- 8:26ready to catch it. But they need to get the second
- 8:28tower up, because if something does happen to the catch tower
- 8:30or the launch tower, it's the same thing.
- 8:32Launch and catch is the same thing, so something happens to
- 8:35one of the towers. They need to have a backup
- 8:38because they can't just wait months.
- 8:40If the booster comes in hot, breaks a bunch of stuff 'cause
- 8:43there's hundreds of miles of cables and pipes that connect
- 8:47everything at Starbase if anything goes wrong.
- 8:50This thing is made out of stainless steel too.
- 8:51So if anything goes wrong, shards of stainless steel could
- 8:55explode and just devastate some of these pipes, some of the
- 9:01tankers, some of the tanks equipment nearby, it's it would
- 9:05be a massive process to get it back up and flying.
- 9:08And also at that point they have to deal with federal
- 9:11regulations, if FAA, etcetera. And then that's going to be a
- 9:16big deal. So if something happens that's a
- 9:19mishap, they have to do a full mishap investigation and it
- 9:22could push them back a year. So they have to make sure this
- 9:24is absolutely perfect for IFT 3. They're going to try to land the
- 9:29booster in the Gulf of Mexico and they're going to, which this
- 9:33is a cool part. They're going to launch the
- 9:36Starship all the way to the Indian Ocean.
- 9:39Before they were going to go to the off the coast of Hawaii,
- 9:44Kauai for the first two flights. That was their plan and they
- 9:49switched it to the Indian Ocean for safety reasons.
- 9:52We're not exactly sure, Elon and SpaceX hasn't released the
- 9:55details about the safety reasons, but they're gonna be
- 9:57landing in the Indian Ocean. And when they land in the Indian
- 10:00Ocean with a ship, they would have done a few things in
- 10:03between the launch and the landing.
- 10:06One of those things is a fuel. It's they're moving fuel from
- 10:10one container to another container within the Starship
- 10:13itself. This is for a bigger problem
- 10:16that SpaceX is solving, which is they're gonna be doing in orbit
- 10:21refueling. So they need to make sure that
- 10:23the fuel can actually move around the Starship, and also
- 10:26they're going to be checking the payload doors for Starship, and
- 10:30the payload doors are very important payload doors.
- 10:35It's a Pez dispenser at this point for the Starlink missions.
- 10:40Now Starlink, if you're not familiar, it's Spacex's
- 10:43broadband rural satellite Internet service, and it's a
- 10:49massive moneymaker for SpaceX. Now, if they could launch
- 10:54hundreds of Starlinks in a month as opposed to 30, it would be a
- 11:00game changer. For SpaceX, it would.
- 11:02The revenue would increase dramatically.
- 11:04They can have more coverage and more people using the service.
- 11:09Better service for everybody. It's just a no brainer.
- 11:12And Starship can hold an infinite amount more than a
- 11:15Falcon 9, there's just no comparison to it.
- 11:18So if they can nail this time the next flight, they may launch
- 11:23some Starlink satellites into orbit, adjust to test it and see
- 11:27if it works. So that might be an interesting
- 11:30one for IFT 4, but IFT 3, if they do, they're just going to
- 11:34test the mechanism to launch those out and the Hatch, things
- 11:38like that. And as far as we know, that's it
- 11:41except for landing in the Indian Ocean and getting to orbit or
- 11:45getting the space for the Starship.
- 11:47And as far as we know, that's the those are the big ones,
- 11:51those are the big takeaways for this launch.
