Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Nowadays, it's pretty much common knowledge that chatting online to
- 0:09Speaker 1: strangers around the world has its risks. Who are these
- 0:13Speaker 1: people on the other side of the internet, Are they
- 0:16Speaker 1: who they say they are? And do they have access
- 0:19Speaker 1: to our information? These ideas of caution have come much
- 0:24Speaker 1: more in the front of our minds when online in
- 0:26Speaker 1: only the past ten years, and a big part of
- 0:30Speaker 1: it is because of today's case. Today we talk about
- 0:34Speaker 1: the young teen girl named Amanda Todd who is cyber
- 0:38Speaker 1: bullied so severely it shook the world. I'm Ben, I'm Nicole,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and this is Wicked and Grim, a.
- 0:47Speaker 2: True crime podcast.
- 0:51Speaker 1: The following podcasts and material intended for a mature audience
- 0:58Speaker 1: listener discretion. Oh shit, you just spilled your eggnog all
- 1:23Speaker 1: over yourself, smooth.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I did. And here I thought you were being allowed,
- 1:28Speaker 2: but apparently I'm being wow welcome.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Yeah if okay, that was a fumble of a start.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Nicole just built her rummenagnog over herself.
- 1:37Speaker 2: So yeah, it's a shitty day. Not a shitty day.
- 1:41Speaker 1: It's never a good day.
- 1:43Speaker 2: It's been a fine day. But I literally have eggnog
- 1:45Speaker 2: all over myself.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Why did you say that while you were like rubbing
- 1:49Speaker 1: your chest.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I don't know, because it just flowed.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Apparently that's like a seductive thing, just bathing in eggnog.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yeah, wow, it might work for some people.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I could picture it. I mean, you are my wife,
- 2:01Speaker 1: so rightfully?
- 2:01Speaker 2: So goodness gracious?
- 2:04Speaker 1: Yeah, So, how's it going everyone? That we're coming on
- 2:07Speaker 1: to the holiday season?
- 2:08Speaker 2: It is the holiday season and a half right now.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I hope everyone's all ready for it. And whatever holiday
- 2:14Speaker 1: you do or do not celebrate, hope, I just wish
- 2:17Speaker 1: you a great holiday season. Let's say that.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I wish you time off and rest. Oh, that's
- 2:22Speaker 2: why I wish.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Time off, rest and happiness.
- 2:25Speaker 2: That is my ultimate wish right now, Just time off
- 2:27Speaker 2: and rest. Eh, yeah and happiness. I like that too.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Good call. Well, I can tell you that these two
- 2:32Speaker 1: individuals brought us a little bit of happiness because they
- 2:34Speaker 1: signed up for Patreons this last week. So Brooke Dunbar
- 2:38Speaker 1: and Beth both recently signed up to support us over
- 2:41Speaker 1: on Patreon. Thank you, and so if you want to
- 2:44Speaker 1: join us too, links in the description down below. If
- 2:46Speaker 1: not totally cool, there is zero pressure. Do not join
- 2:49Speaker 1: if you don't want to. We appreciate you just being
- 2:51Speaker 1: here just the same. Yeah, we got a little bit
- 2:55Speaker 1: of news for you guys.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Yeah, we dropped a YouTube video.
- 2:57Speaker 1: We did.
- 2:58Speaker 2: We did.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Do you want to go on a little bit an
- 3:00Speaker 1: explanation of that.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Well, we watched the Casey Anthony Are the Truth Lies
- 3:06Speaker 2: documentary We're the Truth.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Lies Lies, emphasis on lies.
- 3:11Speaker 2: So this was on Peacock TV, and so we watched
- 3:14Speaker 2: it and we basically put on a YouTube video.
- 3:17Speaker 1: To review it our thoughts. However, we didn't watch it
- 3:22Speaker 1: on Peacock TV. We loudly and proudly pirated that shit.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you're very proud of that.
- 3:27Speaker 1: So there is no ad revenue or any sort of
- 3:30Speaker 1: analytics going towards It's good. We do our full breakdown
- 3:33Speaker 1: on it. Why we think you should not watch it.
- 3:36Speaker 1: If you do watch it, maybe pirated as well, but
- 3:38Speaker 1: we don't think you should. We don't think it's a
- 3:40Speaker 1: good use of your time. It's a very biased documentary.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I wouldn't even call it a documentary.
- 3:45Speaker 2: A lot of people are sharing our opinion.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I think so yes. So link is in the description.
- 3:51Speaker 1: You can go over and check out our YouTube and
- 3:53Speaker 1: check that out if you'd like that being said. Should
- 3:57Speaker 1: we get onto today's episode.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I think so, though, I think this is going to
- 4:01Speaker 2: be a heavy episode.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I think so. It's yeah, warning on this one. It
- 4:08Speaker 1: does deal with with children, young adults, I shall say,
- 4:13Speaker 1: very sensitive topics and heavy matters.
- 4:15Speaker 2: So yeah, this shit just makes me fume. So yeah,
- 4:20Speaker 2: let's go.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Okay, Well, I think it's to start off, it's pretty
- 4:25Speaker 1: difficult for us to imagine that most people, and most
- 4:27Speaker 1: parents for that matter, were so casual about letting their
- 4:31Speaker 1: their children talk to random strangers online, whether it was
- 4:35Speaker 1: chat rooms, you know, on early social media sites and
- 4:37Speaker 1: that sort of stuff. I mean, especially because it really
- 4:40Speaker 1: wasn't that long ago. Most of us think like so
- 4:43Speaker 1: differently now, even just nowadays, but we have to remember
- 4:47Speaker 1: that nothing, nothing like the Internet or the chat rooms
- 4:49Speaker 1: really ever existed before. So even as fresh as this
- 4:53Speaker 1: Internet is currently while you're listening to this, it's a
- 4:57Speaker 1: whole new concept for the world. Yeah, yep, So even nowadays,
- 5:02Speaker 1: people don't know what they're getting into, but even more
- 5:04Speaker 1: so ten years ago.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Yeah, they very much so know. We know a lot
- 5:08Speaker 2: more now, but.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Even still, it's just the tip of the iceberg.
- 5:11Speaker 2: It is.
- 5:12Speaker 1: So the harsh reality of the Internet is almost nothing
- 5:15Speaker 1: is sacred. Almost nothing is safe and that is something
- 5:20Speaker 1: that Amanda Todd and her family found out in some
- 5:22Speaker 1: of the harshest ways possible.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Okay, that's a very scary place.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I needless to say.
- 5:29Speaker 2: I think we've mentioned this before, but honestly, sometimes I
- 5:32Speaker 2: feel like it was just easier not having it. I mean,
- 5:34Speaker 2: it is easier having it, but it's not easier having it.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Flip side of the coin, right, Yan and Yang. Yeah,
- 5:39Speaker 1: there's good and evil. One cannot exist without the other.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Light and dark, right yep. So yeah, today we're talking
- 5:47Speaker 1: about Amanda Todd. Now a Manda Todd was born in
- 5:50Speaker 1: nineteen ninety six and in twenty twelve, when a story
- 5:54Speaker 1: really came to light, she would be fifteen years old.
- 5:56Speaker 1: She was a Canadian girl from Port Coquitlam for British Columbia,
- 6:01Speaker 1: hailing from our hometown province.
- 6:03Speaker 2: We know how to say Port Coquitlam.
- 6:04Speaker 1: We do. We listened to other podcasts in the past
- 6:07Speaker 1: where they talk about Pork Coquitlam and other places around
- 6:11Speaker 1: British Columbia and they slaughter it right rightfully. So yeah,
- 6:15Speaker 1: but we've been around. We've even been to Pork Coquitlam.
- 6:17Speaker 2: So yeah, we know how to pronounce the cities in
- 6:21Speaker 2: our province.
- 6:21Speaker 1: We do. That's about it. Anything beyond that, we're screwed.
- 6:26Speaker 1: So anyways, her parents had, unfortunately, like many others before her, divorced.
- 6:31Speaker 1: They divorced a few years back, and it was about
- 6:35Speaker 1: when she was about ten years old. She had decided
- 6:37Speaker 1: that she was going to be moving in with her father.
- 6:39Speaker 1: So things weren't that strained between the households as her
- 6:42Speaker 1: parents managed to create a good co parenting relationship and
- 6:47Speaker 1: Amanda still was in regular contact with her mother even
- 6:49Speaker 1: though staying with her father. That's good, but Amanda was
- 6:53Speaker 1: living with her father, and her father wanted Amanda to
- 6:56Speaker 1: follow her dreams now. Amanda was a huge Justice Bieber
- 7:00Speaker 1: fan and she wanted to be just like him. She
- 7:02Speaker 1: imagined herself standing in front of on center stage with
- 7:06Speaker 1: a big crowd in front of her of people cheering
- 7:08Speaker 1: as she sang. She would spend a lot of her
- 7:11Speaker 1: time in her bedroom practicing and singing and recording videos
- 7:15Speaker 1: of herself doing so. She posted these videos on social
- 7:19Speaker 1: media sites, hoping to be picked up and become an
- 7:22Speaker 1: overnight sensation, just like Justin Bieber who. Fun fact, if
- 7:26Speaker 1: you didn't know God his start on YouTube.
- 7:28Speaker 2: And he's Canadian as well.
- 7:29Speaker 1: He is Canadian as well. Yeah, so she did all
- 7:32Speaker 1: this by means of a webcam, a webcam that her
- 7:35Speaker 1: father had bought her. Now, this webcam was a bit
- 7:39Speaker 1: of contention. It was a bit of an issue between
- 7:41Speaker 1: her parents. Her mom said that there was no reason
- 7:44Speaker 1: that a kid would need a webcam, and by this
- 7:48Speaker 1: time she was about twelve years old. Okay, but her father,
- 7:51Speaker 1: as I mentioned, wanted her to follow her dreams, so
- 7:54Speaker 1: he decided he was going to get her one.
- 7:56Speaker 2: See I kind of agree with the mom there, But
- 7:58Speaker 2: then the dad's reasoning is makes so much sense too,
- 8:02Speaker 2: Like he's giving her an opportunity. She wants to be
- 8:05Speaker 2: the next Justin Bieber and he probably believes that she
- 8:08Speaker 2: can be that as well.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Yeah, one hundred percent. So there again the flip side
- 8:13Speaker 1: of the coin. One cannot exist without the other. Right,
- 8:15Speaker 1: these are two very opposite opinions. Neither one is right
- 8:19Speaker 1: and neither one is wrong. They both just come with
- 8:22Speaker 1: different results.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:24Speaker 1: So, so, though he did his best to monitor her
- 8:28Speaker 1: online activities to ensure she was being responsible, he couldn't
- 8:33Speaker 1: keep up with everything. Right now, The internet, though, is
- 8:36Speaker 1: always isn't always the kindest place you can have amazing talent,
- 8:40Speaker 1: and even still you can find negative reviews and feedback
- 8:44Speaker 1: from what we call nowadays the trolls. Right now, Amanda's
- 8:49Speaker 1: voice was sorry. Her videos were no exception. Even though
- 8:54Speaker 1: she did have a rather nice singing voice, though still
- 8:56Speaker 1: not perfect. She got mixed reception and sometimes the comment
- 9:01Speaker 1: section will get a little too much for her and
- 9:03Speaker 1: she would end up taking some of the videos down.
- 9:05Speaker 1: That's brutal, it is, especially when you're like chasing your
- 9:09Speaker 1: dream like that and people are just gonna knock you
- 9:11Speaker 1: to the point where you back off, Like who the
- 9:13Speaker 1: fuck cares?
- 9:14Speaker 2: Because honestly, if you didn't like her video, like, you're
- 9:16Speaker 2: not forced to being watch to watch it.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Yeah, no one asked for your fucking opinion.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Like, you're literally not forced. You can just move
- 9:23Speaker 2: on to the next video that you like and that's that.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Yeah, And there's nothing wrong with constructive criticism. There's nothing
- 9:30Speaker 1: wrong with you know, if you don't have anything nice
- 9:33Speaker 1: to say, don't say anything at all. Like, there's a
- 9:35Speaker 1: lot of other options other than being a dick. Yeah,
- 9:38Speaker 1: you know, you don't have to be an asshole because you.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Can say things, as you said constructive careers, and you
- 9:44Speaker 2: can say things kindly, oh yeah, without being a dick.
- 9:47Speaker 2: But then most times people are there's just they're just
- 9:50Speaker 2: being dicks.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Well, and you can say like like, I'm not I'm
- 9:54Speaker 1: going to say something a little constructive about singing. I
- 9:57Speaker 1: don't know shit about singing, and I'm not basing this
- 9:59Speaker 1: off a man todd skills. Just for the record, I'm
- 10:01Speaker 1: just completely random pulling this out of the air. So
- 10:04Speaker 1: you could say something after watching someone's singing videos where
- 10:06Speaker 1: you can see they need to improve on something, but
- 10:09Speaker 1: you could be like, oh my god, that was such
- 10:10Speaker 1: an awesome job. I love your rendition of this song.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I can see you're still working on the high notes there,
- 10:15Speaker 1: but you're really getting on it. Good job, keep going.
- 10:18Speaker 1: What's wrong with that sort of shit?
- 10:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that's literally giving them advice of how they can
- 10:24Speaker 2: potentially move forward and closer to their dreams.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Yeah, you're giving them your opinion. You're being positive, You're
- 10:30Speaker 1: helping them. That's how you That's how you can be
- 10:34Speaker 1: positive and make an impact on someone's life and not
- 10:36Speaker 1: be a total fucking douche.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Canoe, you know exactly.
- 10:39Speaker 1: So I'm sure she was getting some of that too though,
- 10:42Speaker 1: mind you, but occasionally that negativity would hit home. And
- 10:47Speaker 1: remember she was still only a child at the time
- 10:49Speaker 1: of all this was cool.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's young. That's hard. It's hard to swallow
- 10:53Speaker 2: at any age. But when you're a kid, I think
- 10:54Speaker 2: it's a little worse.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it definitely gets you even more, especially if
- 10:57Speaker 1: you do start getting these comments from people who are older. Yeah,
- 11:02Speaker 1: so negatively, negativity can have a huge impact on a person,
- 11:06Speaker 1: let alone someone young like Commanda, and Amanda was pretty
- 11:09Speaker 1: much left on her own when it came to the Internet,
- 11:11Speaker 1: even dealing with these sort of negative comments. Her parents
- 11:14Speaker 1: didn't really understand what it was that she was doing.
- 11:18Speaker 1: They didn't really understand chat rooms or comment sections. But
- 11:20Speaker 1: they did do their best to support her and protect
- 11:22Speaker 1: her when they could, right and mind you, in twenty ten,
- 11:26Speaker 1: twenty twelve, but when this is no one really understand
- 11:31Speaker 1: like parents didn't understood stand chat rooms. See.
- 11:33Speaker 2: The nice thing now, I guess is a lot of
- 11:36Speaker 2: the parents nowadays they do understand it.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Right well, a lot of parents nowadays were in those
- 11:41Speaker 1: chat rooms.
- 11:41Speaker 2: At this time exactly so, And then back then, like
- 11:44Speaker 2: their parents had no They were learning it as well,
- 11:47Speaker 2: and like the kids knew.
- 11:48Speaker 1: It more so right, there was nothing to base their
- 11:50Speaker 1: information off of them. Exactly the information they got was
- 11:53Speaker 1: from their kids. So it's a whole new world for
- 11:58Speaker 1: everyone and everyone's trying to navigate. So as much as
- 12:03Speaker 1: their parents did try and do the right thing, they
- 12:05Speaker 1: had no idea on the sort of dangers that Amanda
- 12:07Speaker 1: would soon be faced with in the online chat rooms.
- 12:11Speaker 1: While online, she would eventually come across a user, a
- 12:15Speaker 1: young man who went by the name of Tyler Boo.
- 12:17Speaker 1: He said Amanda had an amazing voice and he was
- 12:20Speaker 1: a fan of hers. A fanky exactly what Amanda was
- 12:24Speaker 1: striving for. Right, people do appreciate her art and her voice,
- 12:29Speaker 1: and who could help listen to her music and she
- 12:32Speaker 1: can grow a career. Tyler told her she was also
- 12:36Speaker 1: very beautiful. He said she was special and talented. But
- 12:41Speaker 1: as things started to take a turn because Tyler requested
- 12:47Speaker 1: Amanda take her top off, oh gosh. Now. She was
- 12:54Speaker 1: on a streaming website called blog tv at the time,
- 12:57Speaker 1: and reportedly there was a procimately two hundred people watching
- 13:01Speaker 1: her in her chat room.
- 13:02Speaker 2: That's a lot.
- 13:03Speaker 1: That is a significo. Yes it is, so there's this
- 13:07Speaker 1: many people watching her. When Tyler made the request in the.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Chat, oh please say, she just like didn't I see? Okay,
- 13:13Speaker 2: I know a little bit about the story, but not
- 13:15Speaker 2: the fine details. So what did she do?
- 13:19Speaker 1: Well, Amanda wasn't wasn't up for it.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Good, thank you.
- 13:24Speaker 1: But eventually she took some convincing and after a long
- 13:28Speaker 1: stream of compliments and kind words from Tyler's and others
- 13:32Speaker 1: in the chat, she agreed and she flashed her chest
- 13:36Speaker 1: on the webcam mounted on her computer monitor. Remember at
- 13:40Speaker 1: this time, she's probably about twelve years old.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Like bear chest or like chest and a bra or.
- 13:46Speaker 1: What no bear chest? Yes? Okay, And in that moment,
- 13:54Speaker 1: that was that, in that instance, in that instant, man
- 14:00Speaker 1: and his life would be changed forever and a dark
- 14:03Speaker 1: downward spiral would begin.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, okay, so like one little mistake.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Basically yeah. The chat slowly died out, and Amanda moved
- 14:15Speaker 1: on with her life, probably forgetting about the whole thing
- 14:18Speaker 1: that had ever even happened. But the young man on
- 14:20Speaker 1: the other end of the chat didn't because he had
- 14:24Speaker 1: a few mementos to remember. The whole experienced.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Boy he screenshotted it, right.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, at this time, like I said, Amanda was
- 14:34Speaker 1: only around about twelve years old. And Tyler began messaging
- 14:37Speaker 1: her about a year later.
- 14:39Speaker 2: A year fucking later, yeah, okay.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Only this time the messages weren't so smooth. He showed
- 14:47Speaker 1: Amanda that he had taken pictures of her from that
- 14:49Speaker 1: moment when she had flashed her chest a year prior.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and he.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Began to threaten to send the photo to everyone. She
- 14:56Speaker 1: knew what he was requesting was she had to do
- 15:01Speaker 1: three fifteen minute private shows for him on webcam.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 15:06Speaker 1: If he did this. Oh, if she did this, he
- 15:10Speaker 1: would not send the photo out and he would leave
- 15:13Speaker 1: her alone forever.
- 15:14Speaker 2: This guy is a mofo. Oh my gosh.
- 15:18Speaker 1: But if she didn't do this, he would follow through
- 15:21Speaker 1: with his threat and send the photo out.
- 15:24Speaker 2: See. This is just so terrible. It's so terrible because
- 15:27Speaker 2: as an adult, like say, so, I'm like I'm thirty four,
- 15:30Speaker 2: Like I'm quite an adult if something like that was happening,
- 15:35Speaker 2: like you would just be like go fuck yourself, like
- 15:38Speaker 2: who the fuckres kind of thing. But then this thirteen
- 15:41Speaker 2: year old in her mind and she's thinking about what
- 15:45Speaker 2: all her friends and like her peers and then her parents, yep,
- 15:49Speaker 2: are gonna think like she. Honestly, at that age, I
- 15:54Speaker 2: think you would think that there's there's nowhere to go.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Well, even at this age, think of it this way.
- 16:02Speaker 1: We all have professions, we have our job, we have
- 16:04Speaker 1: our friends, we have our families, we have colleagues, a reputation, reputation. Yeah,
- 16:09Speaker 1: imagine this individual is holding this photo above you and says,
- 16:13Speaker 1: I'll send it to your boss, your coworkers, the people
- 16:17Speaker 1: you go to the gym with, your family, your friends,
- 16:19Speaker 1: when you go see them on Christmas, They'll all have
- 16:22Speaker 1: this image in their mind. What would you do?
- 16:25Speaker 2: But see now, I think it'd be more acceptable in
- 16:29Speaker 2: the sense now days ago, I don't think would super care.
- 16:32Speaker 2: And then you could just say your story like well
- 16:35Speaker 2: I had to, this is what the alternative was, and
- 16:38Speaker 2: then they'd be like, yeah, let's see that photo, Like
- 16:41Speaker 2: that's way better than you having to give this freaking
- 16:43Speaker 2: nasty motherfucker private show.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Yeah, that's fair, that's totally fair.
- 16:48Speaker 2: I think anyone nowadays would choose that they would just
- 16:50Speaker 2: see that photo over you doing the other thing.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Oh, I agree, But there's still repercussions that come with it.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Oh yeah, your boss sees that image. What are they
- 16:59Speaker 1: going to think of you? Now? What sort of reputation
- 17:01Speaker 1: will you get that raise? What will the people in
- 17:03Speaker 1: the lunch youon be saying when you're not there? You know,
- 17:05Speaker 1: all those questions in the back of your mind.
- 17:07Speaker 2: They talk your back because.
- 17:09Speaker 1: There is that perception that's going to come along with it. Now. Amanda,
- 17:14Speaker 1: rightfully so was terrified and didn't know what to do,
- 17:17Speaker 1: but she knew she wasn't about to provide these requests
- 17:20Speaker 1: of private shows, and she refused. Okay, this tyler was
- 17:27Speaker 1: furious and immediately went into action. He wasn't bluffing. He
- 17:32Speaker 1: knew her personal information and he sent the image to
- 17:36Speaker 1: everyone she knew, family, friends, and he even gained access
- 17:42Speaker 1: to her friends list on Facebook, knew what school she
- 17:45Speaker 1: went to, and sent that image to every single person
- 17:49Speaker 1: he could at her school.
- 17:50Speaker 2: What a creepy pay Yes, this guy's a fucking monster.
- 17:57Speaker 1: The picture ended up being passed back and forth between
- 18:00Speaker 1: so many individuals and so quickly. It was so widespread
- 18:04Speaker 1: and distributed online that police showed up at Amanda's home
- 18:08Speaker 1: at four am to warn her father. What was going
- 18:11Speaker 1: on and make sure that he was aware of what
- 18:13Speaker 1: his daughter was doing online. But unfortunately that's about all
- 18:19Speaker 1: the police did.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Now.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I mean, if this happened today, I think the situation
- 18:25Speaker 1: would have been handled totally different, especially by the adults.
- 18:30Speaker 1: To be fair, I also think that most children and
- 18:32Speaker 1: teens would be much more sympathetic towards Amanda's situation. Maybe
- 18:36Speaker 1: not totally. There are always people, you know, taking things
- 18:38Speaker 1: too far and harassing others, but I think most people
- 18:41Speaker 1: would understand that Amanda was a victim, just kind of
- 18:44Speaker 1: like what you were just talking about. But again, this
- 18:49Speaker 1: was ten years ago, in twenty twelve, it was As
- 18:52Speaker 1: far as the Internet is concerned, this is basically a lifetime.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Ago because they're basically just warn't warning the father what
- 18:59Speaker 2: she's doing. They're not trying to look for this little
- 19:02Speaker 2: what is his name?
- 19:03Speaker 1: Even his name Tyler bou was the website name he
- 19:07Speaker 1: was going.
- 19:08Speaker 2: By, not even trying to find him to correct.
- 19:12Speaker 1: So to put it in perspective, if you have a
- 19:15Speaker 1: predator at a playground and your child is the target
- 19:19Speaker 1: of this, you tell the child don't go to the
- 19:22Speaker 1: playground anymore, stay away from there, right, But you should
- 19:26Speaker 1: probably be searching for the predator, wouldn't you think.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Well, yeah, because I'm thinking this person is probably a
- 19:32Speaker 2: lot older than Amanda as well.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's all that was done, was, hey, stay
- 19:38Speaker 1: off the internet, stay away. That's it. Not enough, no,
- 19:44Speaker 1: And to be fair though, to be fair, it's not
- 19:46Speaker 1: like her parents could do much other than that, and
- 19:50Speaker 1: other than request police action. But the police unfortunately were
- 19:55Speaker 1: very little involved me I mean.
- 19:58Speaker 2: To them, I guess too. This is a new thing, right,
- 20:01Speaker 2: maybe there isn't really necessarily consequences at this time for
- 20:04Speaker 2: stuff like that, not so much.
- 20:06Speaker 1: And I mean, police weren't really interested in chasing up
- 20:08Speaker 1: a person who'd done this either. It's just kind of
- 20:10Speaker 1: like whatever, it's an online thing.
- 20:13Speaker 2: And they didn't have the means either. They didn't have
- 20:15Speaker 2: the means finding him.
- 20:16Speaker 1: They didn't have the knowledge. Just like it was a
- 20:18Speaker 1: new new world for Amanda and her parents to explore.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Same with authorities, like nowadays, they'd find the little geek
- 20:25Speaker 2: right away.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah, they have processes and procedures and things that
- 20:30Speaker 1: they follow and do and connections and people to talk to.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Back then, not so much. Not that it's an excuse
- 20:37Speaker 1: for authorities to sit back and twiddle their thumbs. Mind
- 20:39Speaker 1: you no, but it's a lot easier today now. Instead,
- 20:45Speaker 1: what they did, like I said, just recommend you stay
- 20:47Speaker 1: away from the sites and left her and her family
- 20:50Speaker 1: to get on with their own way. Now, Amanda, rightfully so,
- 20:54Speaker 1: was a total wreck. Everyone she knew was talking about
- 20:58Speaker 1: the picture, and most of them didn't have anything nice
- 21:01Speaker 1: to say about her either. They made fun of Amanda,
- 21:04Speaker 1: They made fun of her body, and they thought that
- 21:06Speaker 1: it was her own fault for doing this. The whole
- 21:11Speaker 1: ordeal took a huge toll on this young girl's mental
- 21:14Speaker 1: health and self esteem. There wasn't really anything in place,
- 21:18Speaker 1: like a program or support group where she could turn,
- 21:21Speaker 1: and Amanda had no idea who to turn to for
- 21:25Speaker 1: help even if she had wanted to, you know, like, she.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Just felt so alone.
- 21:31Speaker 1: One hundred percent.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Oh man, this is brutal.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Now, though she was alone and terrified, on the surface,
- 21:39Speaker 1: she kept her chin held high and pretended like she
- 21:42Speaker 1: was okay. Even still, things were not improving, So her
- 21:47Speaker 1: parents decided the best thing to do was pull her
- 21:49Speaker 1: out of this school and enroll her in a new one.
- 21:52Speaker 2: I think that's a good idea.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Definitely a good call. I got to take a sip
- 21:55Speaker 1: here on my throat's getting scratchy. Hold on, you're.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Always having that issue these past few podcasts.
- 22:01Speaker 1: I feel like I think it's like the dry winter
- 22:04Speaker 1: air that's getting me.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Oh okay, that could be actually.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Getting old in the winter air. It's hurting my joints
- 22:10Speaker 1: in my throats. Oh my god, I'm an old man.
- 22:14Speaker 1: It's going to be me in five years. I guarantee it.
- 22:16Speaker 1: It's you. Now tooche you're not wrong. So anyways, they
- 22:23Speaker 1: pulled her out of the school and they enrolled her
- 22:25Speaker 1: in a new one, hoping that it would help her
- 22:27Speaker 1: meet new people who hadn't seen this picture and kind
- 22:30Speaker 1: of start fresh.
- 22:31Speaker 2: But a new school in the same town. I'm assuming I.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Didn't look up exactly which new school. I'm pretty sure
- 22:37Speaker 1: it was a new school in the same town, because.
- 22:39Speaker 2: You'd almost have to move her to another city. I
- 22:43Speaker 2: feel like fair enough.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Yeah, Now, I do know a little bit of foreshadowing,
- 22:48Speaker 1: I guess by saying this, But I do know she
- 22:50Speaker 1: does move to another city later.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Oh okay, okay, So.
- 22:55Speaker 1: This did work, and Amanda took a break from the
- 22:57Speaker 1: internet as well. She really had a possibility for a
- 23:00Speaker 1: fresh start. People didn't know who she was. Even though
- 23:03Speaker 1: her picture was still out there. She wasn't going on
- 23:06Speaker 1: places where she could read these messages about the image
- 23:09Speaker 1: and people were posting about it, so she stayed away
- 23:12Speaker 1: from that. She was at her new school. Things were
- 23:15Speaker 1: looking up, but Amanda's old life would soon catch up
- 23:19Speaker 1: with her, and the new life that Amanda was building
- 23:21Speaker 1: for herself came crashing down around her. After about a
- 23:25Speaker 1: year of things being fine, Amanda's parents led her back
- 23:28Speaker 1: on the internet with the condition that she only spent
- 23:30Speaker 1: a couple hours a day on it. I mean, in retrospect,
- 23:33Speaker 1: that's a huge turning point in the story, and it
- 23:36Speaker 1: wasn't good. It takes what like thirty seconds a minute
- 23:40Speaker 1: to read a comment to find.
- 23:43Speaker 2: One of these negative things she found negative stuff.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Yeah, and Amanda's on there for a couple hours a day,
- 23:51Speaker 1: so that that's a lot of time to dig into
- 23:53Speaker 1: this information again, right, So, oh, it's.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Too bad that she felt like she needed to go
- 24:00Speaker 2: do that. I mean, I can understand, yeah, and not
- 24:04Speaker 2: just that, but things got worse when Amanda came across
- 24:07Speaker 2: a Facebook profile.
- 24:10Speaker 1: And the profile picture was of her topless.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Wow, seriously, yes, probably by that freaking I don't even
- 24:19Speaker 2: know his name again, But that's fine. I'm fine not
- 24:21Speaker 2: remembering his shitty name.
- 24:23Speaker 1: She was horrified when she ran across this. Yeah, and
- 24:25Speaker 1: it got even worse when whoever it was who created
- 24:28Speaker 1: this account started adding all of the people in her
- 24:31Speaker 1: new school time her friends.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Like, gosh, what the actual fuck? Yep, Like this is
- 24:37Speaker 2: like a year later. Yep, what is the point of this.
- 24:42Speaker 2: I'm freaking angry.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Yeah, you should be.
- 24:44Speaker 2: This is brutal. Does this person not have anything better
- 24:47Speaker 2: to do with their freaking time?
- 24:49Speaker 1: Apparently not? Okay, And as a result of that, the
- 24:54Speaker 1: exact same thing happened again, and Amanda was facing all
- 24:58Speaker 1: the horrible comments online and all all the kids who
- 25:00Speaker 1: had once been her friend turning on her all over again.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Wow. I'm sorry, but that's unbelievable. That's unbelievable.
- 25:08Speaker 1: So, with her past experience still fresh in her mind
- 25:11Speaker 1: and seeing the writing on the wall, her and her
- 25:13Speaker 1: parents decided that they weren't going to wait around for
- 25:15Speaker 1: the situation to get any worse, and they moved her
- 25:18Speaker 1: to a different school again. Now, Amanda had a much
- 25:21Speaker 1: harder time settling in and making friends this time around,
- 25:24Speaker 1: especially because she had the past two experiences fresh in
- 25:27Speaker 1: the back of her mind and she was on edge
- 25:29Speaker 1: that something was going to happen at any moment. But online,
- 25:34Speaker 1: someone she already knew reached out to her, hoping to
- 25:36Speaker 1: get in touch and show his support. He was actually
- 25:40Speaker 1: a student from Amanda's old school, and he told her
- 25:43Speaker 1: that he was so sorry for everything that was happening
- 25:45Speaker 1: to her, and that he thought she was one of
- 25:48Speaker 1: the most beautiful girls he had ever seen.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Please tell me that this is legit.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Well, and that's the thing. She was questioning this right
- 25:55Speaker 1: off the get go. Was this another trick or was
- 25:57Speaker 1: this kid exactly who he said he was? Well, he was,
- 26:02Speaker 1: luckily enough, exactly who he said he was. He was
- 26:05Speaker 1: someone that she previously knew. But that didn't really make
- 26:08Speaker 1: things that he said any less confusing, because Amanda knew
- 26:11Speaker 1: that he had a girlfriend and they were still going
- 26:14Speaker 1: out and he was being quite flirtatious with Amanda. Okay, now,
- 26:19Speaker 1: when Amanda confronted him about that, he said that it
- 26:21Speaker 1: was all true and that he had a girlfriend, but
- 26:24Speaker 1: they were going on a break up and he kind
- 26:27Speaker 1: of was hoping that he can get together with Amanda.
- 26:32Speaker 1: So the whole thing about him already having a girlfriend,
- 26:35Speaker 1: I mean, that's quite a big, big red flag right
- 26:37Speaker 1: then and there. But Amanda's a younger teenager at this point.
- 26:40Speaker 1: She wasn't really exactly used to having nice things said
- 26:43Speaker 1: about her either, especially having any sort of attention positive
- 26:47Speaker 1: at all.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Well, I mean, because this is exactly what she needs
- 26:51Speaker 2: in someone who's kind of sticking.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Out for her in kind and nice.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, but not if he sucks as well.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's the thing. He's got some red flags,
- 27:01Speaker 1: but he's being super nice, right.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:04Speaker 1: So there was one day when this boy's girlfriend was
- 27:09Speaker 1: on a holiday. She agreed to go over to his house,
- 27:12Speaker 1: and the two young teenagers did what young teenagers would
- 27:16Speaker 1: do when they have a house together for themselves.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I feel like this is not going
- 27:21Speaker 2: to end well.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Well, things quickly derailed when the girlfriend came back from
- 27:27Speaker 1: holiday and found out that her boyfriend had cheated on
- 27:30Speaker 1: her with Amanda. Okay, now, instead of getting angry with
- 27:35Speaker 1: her boyfriend, the girlfriend and about fifteen other students from
- 27:39Speaker 1: Amanda's old school ganged up on Amanda to beat her up.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Wow, and literally, he was the one that was lying
- 27:49Speaker 2: piece of shit. Yep, because she thought they were on
- 27:53Speaker 2: a break.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Yep.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Oh that is okay, just teenagers. This is too much sometimes,
- 28:00Speaker 2: Like I don't miss that stage at all.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Yeah. So we're going to go into a little bit
- 28:05Speaker 1: more detail on that a little bit later in Amanda's
- 28:08Speaker 1: own words. For now, I'm just going to end it
- 28:10Speaker 1: on that. But after being beat up by these girls,
- 28:15Speaker 1: Amanda ended up in a ditch and having to wait
- 28:17Speaker 1: until her father would come and pick her up. Oh
- 28:21Speaker 1: and then Amanda more than understandably hit rock bottom. She
- 28:27Speaker 1: had so much emotion, so much going on, she didn't
- 28:31Speaker 1: know what to do. She thought she didn't belong in
- 28:34Speaker 1: this world. And when she got home, Amanda did the unthinkable.
- 28:39Speaker 1: She grabbed a bottle of bleach and tried to take
- 28:43Speaker 1: her own life and started drinking.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. Oh, I don't even know what to say.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Like to just feel like you have to.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Do that is so sad, to feel like you're pushed
- 28:55Speaker 1: to that point.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Yep. Yeah.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Now, thankfully she was rushed to the hospital where her
- 29:02Speaker 1: stomach was pumped and she was saved, but the mental
- 29:05Speaker 1: scars were still so very much there, not knowing what
- 29:09Speaker 1: else to do, her parents moved her to a new
- 29:11Speaker 1: city in twenty twelve, hoping that this would finally be
- 29:16Speaker 1: the fresh start that Amanda needed. But another old face
- 29:19Speaker 1: popped up again in her social circles, only he wasn't
- 29:23Speaker 1: the easy to spot from a far kind of face
- 29:26Speaker 1: this time around. In a new school and at the
- 29:29Speaker 1: new beginning of her life, Amanda made a new friend
- 29:32Speaker 1: online who claimed that he'd be moving to Amanda's school
- 29:34Speaker 1: in the new term. The two chatted online for a while,
- 29:37Speaker 1: but this new student was using his time online to
- 29:41Speaker 1: do something else entirely and had nothing to do with
- 29:44Speaker 1: getting to know some of the new students in the
- 29:46Speaker 1: school that he'd be attending. It was a fake profile
- 29:51Speaker 1: belonging to the same individual who had spread the pictures
- 29:53Speaker 1: of Amanda before that. Tyler, Boo, are you serious?
- 29:57Speaker 2: This guy won't let her just move on and live
- 29:59Speaker 2: her life. What is his freaking deal?
- 30:01Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Do we get to find out who the fuck this
- 30:03Speaker 2: person is?
- 30:04Speaker 1: You're gonna have to keep listening.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Holy shit, Okay, you're good, Yeah, but I'm just not
- 30:10Speaker 2: enjoying this. Actually, it's making me quite mad.
- 30:13Speaker 1: This is a very aggravating and angry case.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Yes, because it's just not it's unnecessary. It's so unnecessary.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Yes, And that is the problem with this case. Everything
- 30:23Speaker 1: about it is so unnecessary, and Amanda suffered incredible amounts
- 30:29Speaker 1: because of it. Where was I?
- 30:34Speaker 2: And sorry, I'm just gonna say one more thing while
- 30:35Speaker 2: you figure out your spot. Her poor parents. I feel
- 30:39Speaker 2: like they're probably grasping at straws, trying to do everything
- 30:42Speaker 2: thing they can to give her like the childhood that
- 30:46Speaker 2: she should have and deserves, and it's just like they
- 30:51Speaker 2: just can't. They're not winning. It's ugh.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Yeah. So this was obviously that Tyler bou guy. And
- 30:59Speaker 1: he wasn't, like a I said, trying to meet new
- 31:01Speaker 1: people in the school he was going to be attending.
- 31:03Speaker 1: What he was actually doing was worming his way into
- 31:05Speaker 1: Amanda's social circles on social media. When he had enough
- 31:09Speaker 1: contact information for all her new friends, fellow students, teachers,
- 31:15Speaker 1: he did an all too familiar picture spreading thing all
- 31:20Speaker 1: over again. Amanda found herself right back where she started,
- 31:27Speaker 1: and now she and her family knew there was no
- 31:30Speaker 1: getting away from her internet stalker and the pictures he
- 31:33Speaker 1: had taken of her. Amanda resorted to self harm to
- 31:37Speaker 1: try and ease the pain, and she ended up in
- 31:39Speaker 1: frequent treatment programs in mental health hospitals and on steady
- 31:42Speaker 1: stream of antidepressants. With nowhere to turn in the real world,
- 31:47Speaker 1: Amanda decided she was going to speak about her pain
- 31:50Speaker 1: in the only way she knew. On September seventh, twenty twelve,
- 31:55Speaker 1: she uploaded a video to YouTube titled My Story Struggling, Bullying, Suicide,
- 32:03Speaker 1: self Harm. The black and white video shows Amanda bravely
- 32:07Speaker 1: sitting in front of the camera, showing title cards that
- 32:10Speaker 1: read out her story as she sits silently revealing one
- 32:14Speaker 1: after the other. I've written them out here, so I'm
- 32:18Speaker 1: going to go over them exactly how she wrote it.
- 32:20Speaker 1: This is exactly how she tells her story, so her
- 32:23Speaker 1: cards read this, Hello, I've decided to tell you about
- 32:28Speaker 1: my never ending story. In seventh grade, I would go
- 32:32Speaker 1: with friends on webcam, meet and talk to new people.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Then got called stunning, beautiful, perfect, etc. Then want me
- 32:43Speaker 1: to flash, so I did. One year later, I got
- 32:47Speaker 1: a message on Facebook from him. Don't know how he
- 32:52Speaker 1: knew me. It said, if you don't put on a
- 32:55Speaker 1: show for me, I will send your boobs he knew
- 32:58Speaker 1: my address, school relatives, friends, family names. Christmas break knock
- 33:05Speaker 1: at my door at four am it was the police.
- 33:08Speaker 1: My photo was sent to everyone. I then got really
- 33:12Speaker 1: sick and got anxiety, major depression and panic disorder. Then
- 33:18Speaker 1: I moved and got into drugs and alcohol. My anxiety
- 33:22Speaker 1: got worse. I couldn't go out. A year passed and
- 33:26Speaker 1: the guy came back with my new list of friends
- 33:28Speaker 1: in school, but made a Facebook page my boobs or
- 33:32Speaker 1: his profile pick. I cried every night, lost all my
- 33:37Speaker 1: friends and respect people had for me again. Then nobody
- 33:43Speaker 1: liked me, name calling, judged. I can never get that
- 33:47Speaker 1: photo back. It's out there. Forever, I started cutting. I
- 33:52Speaker 1: promised myself never again. Didn't have any friends and sat
- 33:56Speaker 1: at lunch alone. So I moved schools again. Everything was
- 34:02Speaker 1: better than ever. I sat still alone at lunch in
- 34:06Speaker 1: the library every day. After a month, I started talking
- 34:10Speaker 1: to an old guy friend. We back and forth texted
- 34:14Speaker 1: and he started to say he liked me, led me
- 34:16Speaker 1: on he had a girlfriend. Then he said come over,
- 34:22Speaker 1: my girlfriend is on vacation. So I did huge mistake.
- 34:28Speaker 1: He hooked up with me. I thought he liked me.
- 34:31Speaker 1: One week later I got a text, get out of
- 34:35Speaker 1: your school. His girlfriend and fifteen others came, including himself.
- 34:41Speaker 1: The girl and two others just said look around, nobody
- 34:44Speaker 1: likes you. In front of my new school of fifty people.
- 34:49Speaker 1: A guy then yelled, just punch her already, so she did.
- 34:54Speaker 1: She threw me to the ground and punched me several times.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Kids filmed it. I was all alone and left on
- 35:01Speaker 1: the ground. I felt like a joke in this world.
- 35:05Speaker 1: I thought nobody deserves this. I was alone. I lied
- 35:10Speaker 1: and said it was my fault and my idea. I
- 35:13Speaker 1: didn't want him to get hurt. I thought he really
- 35:15Speaker 1: liked me. He just wanted sex. Someone yelled, puncher already.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Teachers ran over, but I just went and laid in
- 35:25Speaker 1: the ditch and my dad found me. I wanted to
- 35:28Speaker 1: die so bad. When he brought me back home, I
- 35:32Speaker 1: drank bleach. It killed me inside and I thought it
- 35:35Speaker 1: was actually going to die. Ambulance came and brought me
- 35:39Speaker 1: to the hospital and flushed me. Afterwards I got home.
- 35:43Speaker 1: All I saw on Facebook was she deserved it. Did
- 35:47Speaker 1: you wash the mud out of your hair? I hope
- 35:50Speaker 1: she's dead. Nobody cared. I moved away to another city,
- 35:55Speaker 1: to my mom's another school. I didn't want to press
- 35:59Speaker 1: charges because I wanted to move on. Six months has
- 36:03Speaker 1: gone by. People are posting pictures of bleach Chlorex and ditches,
- 36:07Speaker 1: tagging me. I was doing a lot better too. They
- 36:12Speaker 1: said she should try a different bleach. I hope she
- 36:14Speaker 1: dies this time and isn't so stupid, They said, I
- 36:17Speaker 1: hope she sees this and kills herself. Why do I
- 36:22Speaker 1: get this? I messed up? But why follow me? I
- 36:25Speaker 1: left your guys' city. I'm constantly crying now. Every day
- 36:29Speaker 1: I think why am I still here? My anxiety is
- 36:33Speaker 1: horrible now. Never went out this summer, all from my past.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Life's never getting better. Can't go to school, meet or
- 36:43Speaker 1: be with new people. Constantly cutting. I'm really depressed. I'm
- 36:49Speaker 1: on antidepressants now and counseling, and a month ago this summer,
- 36:53Speaker 1: I overdosed in hospital for two days. I'm stuck. What's
- 36:58Speaker 1: left of me now stops. I have nobody. I need someone.
- 37:05Speaker 1: My name is Amanda Todd. That's her video and there
- 37:14Speaker 1: is a link down below if you want to go
- 37:15Speaker 1: watch it on YouTube. There's also a section. I couldn't
- 37:22Speaker 1: find the comment, but in a documentary I watched, they
- 37:25Speaker 1: recovered it, and Amanda would actually reply to some of
- 37:28Speaker 1: the caring comments that were replied to to the video.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Oh really, a lot of this stuff was quite kind
- 37:34Speaker 1: that was pouring in her video went viral.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 37:38Speaker 1: In one of the comments, she replied said this, it's
- 37:43Speaker 1: finally nice to see people care. My family and my
- 37:46Speaker 1: mom are the ones trying to stay strong. I booked
- 37:50Speaker 1: November twenty eighth to get my stay Strong tattoo on
- 37:53Speaker 1: my wrist so I can look at it and stop myself.
- 37:57Speaker 1: People now call me crazy, but I'm I'm just going
- 38:00Speaker 1: to keep my head up. Love and cheers Amanda.
- 38:06Speaker 2: See that's incredible, Like this they get show some she
- 38:10Speaker 2: has some strength.
- 38:13Speaker 1: One hundred percent, and for that alone, she is our
- 38:15Speaker 1: badass at the day.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Because I mean, I've already said it, but it's just
- 38:19Speaker 2: so unnecessary how long this went on for and and
- 38:24Speaker 2: what's the point, Like it just it like costs nothing
- 38:26Speaker 2: to be kind, and it's like those people were going
- 38:29Speaker 2: out of their way to just be complete assholes for
- 38:32Speaker 2: no reason, and things that they should have even forgotten
- 38:35Speaker 2: about or shouldn't have even mattered to them.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and now I don't want to sit here and
- 38:44Speaker 1: point fingers at these kids, because that's what they are.
- 38:47Speaker 1: There are a lot of these individuals online who are
- 38:50Speaker 1: bullying her are kids. They don't understand the consequences of
- 38:54Speaker 1: what they're doing. Not an excuse, but it goes to
- 38:59Speaker 1: show that their parents, their parents, not just of Amanda Todd,
- 39:03Speaker 1: but their parents as well, didn't understand the internet at
- 39:07Speaker 1: the time, didn't know how to deal with this, didn't
- 39:09Speaker 1: know how to monitor it, didn't know anything about it.
- 39:14Speaker 1: And these actions of bullying and cyber bullying are super
- 39:18Speaker 1: heavy because Amanda, however, would never make her tattoo appointment.
- 39:25Speaker 1: On October tenth of twenty twelve, Amanda was found in
- 39:28Speaker 1: her home hanging, and her death was quickly ruled a suicide.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, And how long after, like did this
- 39:37Speaker 2: happen after she put her video up? Do you do
- 39:39Speaker 2: you have when she had put her video up?
- 39:41Speaker 1: Yeah, that was September seventh, really and she was found
- 39:45Speaker 1: October tenth.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Oh and so like people were responding and being kind
- 39:51Speaker 2: and stuff, but she just had I guess these demons
- 39:54Speaker 2: just that were never going to go away.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Hey, yeah, way too many demons, especially for someone so
- 39:59Speaker 1: young to be dealing.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I mean this could just make me
- 40:03Speaker 2: literally like sob sob.
- 40:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I think sorry, my phone's listening to us again.
- 40:09Speaker 1: Likes to do that when we're recording. I think the
- 40:11Speaker 1: FBI is listening.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Creepy. Yeah.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Anyways, Amanda's story brought the concept of cyberbullying into homes
- 40:19Speaker 1: of the average person, making it a very hot topic
- 40:22Speaker 1: and pointing out the flaws in legislation and law enforcement
- 40:26Speaker 1: policies that had failed to keep up with the way
- 40:29Speaker 1: the Internet had been developing. But what it didn't do
- 40:35Speaker 1: was get anyone in any official capacity looking for the
- 40:38Speaker 1: person who'd followed Amanda online for years and make sure
- 40:42Speaker 1: that she could never move on with her life. Canadian
- 40:46Speaker 1: law enforcement did nothing, but the same couldn't be said
- 40:49Speaker 1: for the Internet. The very thing that was the tool
- 40:54Speaker 1: for her bullying would be the thing that would kind
- 40:57Speaker 1: of turn around and help support her. In the end,
- 41:01Speaker 1: the hacker group Anonymous got to work trying to link
- 41:05Speaker 1: ip addresses to a physical address in the real world,
- 41:08Speaker 1: improve the identity of the man behind all the fake
- 41:11Speaker 1: social media profiles, and done all of this harassment to Amanda.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Okay, thank you. So these are just some like what
- 41:19Speaker 2: would you call them, like vigilante people? Is that what
- 41:22Speaker 2: the term would be?
- 41:24Speaker 1: Yeah, you've never heard of anonymous?
- 41:27Speaker 2: Okay? Okay, aye, Sorry I didn't even clue in there.
- 41:30Speaker 2: So this is who went after this person? Correct, No
- 41:33Speaker 2: authorities or anyone, just these people.
- 41:35Speaker 1: To start with.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Now, the group anonymous came up short of identifying the
- 41:43Speaker 1: individual a couple times, even unfortunately dosing the wrong people.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Before their story got enough traction, Facebook actually decides to
- 41:52Speaker 1: launch their own investigation.
- 41:53Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 41:54Speaker 1: A Facebook security team traced back the fake profile IP
- 41:58Speaker 1: addresses because they were multiple being used, right right, Yeah,
- 42:03Speaker 1: they all trace back to a single IP address in
- 42:06Speaker 1: the Netherlands.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Shit, who is this? Do we know who this person is?
- 42:13Speaker 1: I'm sure you'll have to keep listening. Oh for frick sake,
- 42:17Speaker 1: I'm surprised you haven't heard anything about more on this case.
- 42:21Speaker 1: I would have known a lot more.
- 42:22Speaker 2: I know I probably should, especially considering it so close
- 42:25Speaker 2: to home, but I really don't for some reason.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Well, they managed to track it to the Netherlands, and
- 42:30Speaker 1: they reported their findings to both the Canadian and Dutch authorities,
- 42:34Speaker 1: which is kind of when authorities starts stepping in, and
- 42:37Speaker 1: one of them took it quite seriously. The Dutch government
- 42:40Speaker 1: followed a tip and went to the home of the
- 42:42Speaker 1: Dutch Turkish citizen named Aiden Cooben. Once there they had
- 42:49Speaker 1: a look into Aiden's online activity. They knew they had
- 42:53Speaker 1: stumbled across something incredibly serious.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Because he was probably doing this to other people. I'm assuming.
- 43:00Speaker 1: They found evidence that Aiden was the one responsible for
- 43:03Speaker 1: what had happened to Amanda tadd And amongst the lists
- 43:07Speaker 1: of the aliases they found Tyler Boo amongst them.
- 43:12Speaker 2: What a piece of shit.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Not only that, but there was proof that he had
- 43:15Speaker 1: done the exact same thing he'd done to Amanda to
- 43:19Speaker 1: thirty nine other people thirty nine thirty nine. And this
- 43:25Speaker 1: is only the proof.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Is this person, like, Okay, I need to know more
- 43:29Speaker 2: information about him. I have a lot of questions at
- 43:31Speaker 2: all this.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Wait, some of them were young girls and others were
- 43:36Speaker 1: actually grown men as well. Really, now he had this
- 43:40Speaker 1: whole thing down to an art. Aiden will get his
- 43:42Speaker 1: victims into a compromising situation, then blackmail them into doing
- 43:46Speaker 1: whatever he wanted them to do. Sometimes this meant just
- 43:50Speaker 1: sending pictures or camshow. Other times it was sending money
- 43:55Speaker 1: to ensure that he wouldn't be releasing these compromising pictures.
- 43:59Speaker 2: This guy ruining reputations, digusting.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Yeah, he is.
- 44:04Speaker 2: Like, I'm just envisioning this like person that's just like
- 44:08Speaker 2: in his fucking parents' basement doing weird ass shit? Is
- 44:13Speaker 2: that right? Or is he like living in his own
- 44:16Speaker 2: house and shit?
- 44:17Speaker 1: I did his little research on this scumbag as I
- 44:20Speaker 1: had to, so I didn't look into it. Let's put
- 44:22Speaker 1: it that way.
- 44:22Speaker 2: Okay, Well, I'm just going to keep envisioning what I'm
- 44:25Speaker 2: envisioning because like, yeah, yeah.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Well, Aiden was arrested in charge with over seventy two
- 44:33Speaker 1: charges of sexual assault and.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Fraud, thank goodness, all of.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Which he pleaded not guilty too when in court. Idiot,
- 44:41Speaker 1: But by then the world was watching and Aiden had
- 44:44Speaker 1: left a literal trail of digital evidence behind him. Yep,
- 44:49Speaker 1: he was found guilty and sentenced to ten years and
- 44:53Speaker 1: eight months for all his charges. Not enough, but none
- 44:56Speaker 1: of his charges had anything to do with Amanda Todd
- 45:00Speaker 1: and there was a very good reason for.
- 45:02Speaker 2: That, Okay.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Rumors started spreading in twenty nineteen. Rumors started spreading in
- 45:12Speaker 1: twenty nineteen that the Canadian government was up to something,
- 45:15Speaker 1: and it had everything to do with Aiden Coban. There
- 45:19Speaker 1: was talk about him being extradited so he could face
- 45:22Speaker 1: charges related to Amanda Todd on Canadian soil. Wow, okay,
- 45:28Speaker 1: and those rumors proved to be true. Nice and Aiden
- 45:33Speaker 1: was taken to Canadian court on June of twenty twenty two.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Seriously, Okay, why shit have I not heard more about this?
- 45:42Speaker 2: Like I don't know where the fuck? Where the fuck
- 45:44Speaker 2: have I been?
- 45:44Speaker 1: I don't know you should have.
- 45:47Speaker 2: This is almost embarrassing, yeah, a little bit, Okay, okay,
- 45:52Speaker 2: because this is like literally like I'm like, what youared?
- 45:54Speaker 2: Is it? It's twenty twenty two? Like what the fuck?
- 45:57Speaker 2: I don't even like what?
- 45:59Speaker 1: Okay, sorry, this happened six months ago.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm actually flabberg acid right now.
- 46:04Speaker 1: Well, somehow, even with his past convictions, Aiden was full
- 46:08Speaker 1: of confidence and claimed that he wasn't guilty of these
- 46:11Speaker 1: charges against Amanda Talm.
- 46:13Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I'm so disgusted by this human being
- 46:16Speaker 2: like he is. I can only imagine what shit's being
- 46:18Speaker 2: said about him online and stuff too. Oh yeah, like
- 46:21Speaker 2: he's getting it tenfold.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Oh yeah, guarantee it.
- 46:25Speaker 2: And he's and he deserves it.
- 46:26Speaker 1: He's the lowest of low. He has fucking scummed this guy.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:31Speaker 1: So these charges were possession of child pornography, extortion, criminal harassment,
- 46:38Speaker 1: and communication with a young person to commit a sexual offense.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Those are some big, big ones.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Aiden was found guilty on all charges.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Good. I also feel like something in there about like
- 46:51Speaker 2: like secondary murder or some sort of other murder should
- 46:57Speaker 2: be in there, to be honest, But okay, I.
- 46:59Speaker 1: Mean potentially there could be something like that in there.
- 47:01Speaker 1: But I would imagine that trying for certain charges rather
- 47:06Speaker 1: than the extreme ones might ensure his.
- 47:08Speaker 2: Conviction, you know right, I guess yeah, because.
- 47:11Speaker 1: Now you're trying to prove murder rather than like the
- 47:15Speaker 1: child pornography, extortion and the harassment, and you know.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Right, the things that they know they can like definitely get.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Yeah. So, the jury recommended a sentence of twelve years
- 47:27Speaker 1: for his crimes, and the judge gave him more, added
- 47:31Speaker 1: an extra year to his sentence to a total of thirteen,
- 47:36Speaker 1: saying they added the extra year because Aiden had shown
- 47:40Speaker 1: no remorse for his actions and had ultimately ended a
- 47:44Speaker 1: young girl's life.
- 47:46Speaker 2: I think it should be way more than that because
- 47:48Speaker 2: this friggin little uh is going to get out of
- 47:53Speaker 2: jail and just do it again.
- 47:55Speaker 1: Yeah, but I mean total, he's going to be serving
- 47:59Speaker 1: twenty three years.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Oh oh, okay, so it's on top of the other one.
- 48:03Speaker 1: As far as I'm aware, I should clarify, I didn't
- 48:06Speaker 1: actually look into that. I'm assuming it's on top.
- 48:10Speaker 2: And you don't know how old he is. Ah.
- 48:13Speaker 1: No, I didn't look up his age. I didn't, Like
- 48:14Speaker 1: I said, I looked up as little information of him.
- 48:16Speaker 2: As possible, hoping that he's like an eighty year old
- 48:19Speaker 2: man that was living in his parents.
- 48:20Speaker 1: No, he looks like he's like in his forties right now.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Okay, Like I just want him to be like in
- 48:25Speaker 2: there for the rest of his life is all I'm
- 48:27Speaker 2: after here.
- 48:28Speaker 1: No, he'll probably eventually get out unless something happens to
- 48:34Speaker 1: him inside. Who knows. We can cross our fingers on that. Maybe.
- 48:39Speaker 2: Wow.
- 48:40Speaker 1: So that is the case of Amanda Todd, the girl
- 48:42Speaker 1: who went through absolute hell for pretty much three.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Years, no reason whatsoever, all because she.
- 48:51Speaker 1: Made a split, one second mistake.
- 48:54Speaker 2: Tiny mistake really yeah, Like, I mean, okay, it was
- 48:57Speaker 2: a really shitty mistake. Like it sucked that she is.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Not even a really shitty mistake. It's a mistake that
- 49:02Speaker 1: so many people.
- 49:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it is very like innocent of her to make this.
- 49:06Speaker 2: You would never have thought the consequences would be to
- 49:09Speaker 2: this extent. No, And I'm sorry about all the people
- 49:12Speaker 2: involved in this too, like the other kids and stuff like.
- 49:16Speaker 2: I hope that they realize what the fuck they did.
- 49:19Speaker 1: Oh, I really hope that every single one of those
- 49:21Speaker 1: kids thinks about Amanda Todd every day of the rest
- 49:25Speaker 1: of their life and realize that they had a very
- 49:28Speaker 1: big part of her passing.
- 49:31Speaker 2: Yeah, because I mean, yeah, this was twenty twelve, but
- 49:34Speaker 2: I mean it's it's still not realize it's twenty twenty
- 49:37Speaker 2: two now, and like this shit's still happening.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Yeah, it is.
- 49:40Speaker 2: People are so cruel. They give people no chances whatsoever,
- 49:45Speaker 2: and they're just like like they just need to mind
- 49:48Speaker 2: their own business.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Happening time and like, in all honesty, this happens to
- 49:53Speaker 1: so many people, not just kids, not just adults, not
- 49:56Speaker 1: just like targeted, but it happens consistently that we've had
- 50:00Speaker 1: it near what Amanda's had it too. Don't get me
- 50:05Speaker 1: wrong here, but we've had an individual sending very ignorant
- 50:08Speaker 1: remarks to us about our podcast just kind of harassing us.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Not consistently, but it has happened, and it's why.
- 50:15Speaker 2: It's just they're hiding behind the keyboard. It's almost like
- 50:19Speaker 2: because it's not face to face or there's so many
- 50:21Speaker 2: ways nowadays that you can have interaction with people that
- 50:24Speaker 2: isn't face to face. Yeah, that it's like it's justified
- 50:27Speaker 2: to them. Yeah, there's no, it doesn't matter. But it's
- 50:29Speaker 2: like these there's people are real and they're still going
- 50:32Speaker 2: to be reading that.
- 50:33Speaker 1: Yeah, but they don't think they It gives them a
- 50:36Speaker 1: high of power because they can just do that and
- 50:39Speaker 1: ignore it. Yeah, and just be like, haha, I told
- 50:42Speaker 1: this person they suck or whatever their comments would be.
- 50:46Speaker 1: And then it's like that has a significant impact on
- 50:48Speaker 1: someone's day. But why so you can feel a little
- 50:52Speaker 1: bit of a hit of dopamine for five seconds? Yeah,
- 50:55Speaker 1: Like that's low. That is absolutely low, And to show
- 51:00Speaker 1: that what sort of impact it can have. Amanda's not
- 51:03Speaker 1: here anymore because of people like that.
- 51:06Speaker 2: Like she was sixteen, right, she had this whole life
- 51:10Speaker 2: she had, Like I mean, I got to listen to it,
- 51:13Speaker 2: but like you said, a beautiful voice.
- 51:15Speaker 1: I think she was fifteen actually, if I'm not mistaken, okay.
- 51:18Speaker 2: Like still, that is just too young. Oh and just
- 51:22Speaker 2: to think that she had good to go through all
- 51:24Speaker 2: of that and just like this few years she had
- 51:28Speaker 2: on this planet like brut Yeah.
- 51:31Speaker 1: So I did want to say that we're not going
- 51:33Speaker 1: to be putting any research links in the description of
- 51:36Speaker 1: this episode where the research section is. All I'm going
- 51:39Speaker 1: to put in this time is Amanda's video on YouTube
- 51:42Speaker 1: where you can go and watch what she had to say.
- 51:46Speaker 1: And I'm also going to put in a helpline for
- 51:49Speaker 1: anyone who might be having any suicidal thoughts, So go
- 51:52Speaker 1: check that out. If you need someone to talk to,
- 51:54Speaker 1: please give them a call.
- 51:56Speaker 2: So yeah, and yeah, like.
- 51:59Speaker 1: I said, officially named being mad to toat the Badass
- 52:01Speaker 1: of the day.
- 52:02Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 52:04Speaker 1: So with that, thank you for listening. We appreciate you
- 52:07Speaker 1: being here. Go check out those those links for Amanda
- 52:10Speaker 1: there and get yourself some help if you need.
- 52:12Speaker 2: And until next time, stay wicked.
