- 22:25celebrates five years. For five years, Clay County's Family Recovery
- 22:30Court FRC has helped parents struggling with addiction reunite with
- 22:35their children and achieve long term sobriety. FRC is an
- 22:41initiative led by Volunteers of America Mid States and Judge
- 22:47Clint Harris in partnership with the Department of Community Based Services.
- 22:52The voluntary eighteen month program works with families who struggle
- 22:57with addiction and are involved in the child welfare system.
- 23:02The immediate goal is to help parents maintain sobriety, and
- 23:06the long term goal is family reunification. Quote I came
- 23:11from a prosecutor background, and FRC gave me a different
- 23:14outlook on the people I was dealing with every day unquote,
- 23:19Judge Harris said, quote they didn't get into this situation
- 23:23they're in overnight, so it's not going to be fixed overnight. Unquote.

- 23:47I got my own home, my own car, and I
- 23:49wouldn't have had all this if it wasn't for FRC.
- 23:57Ruby lee struggle with addiction began after she was prescribed
- 24:00paying medicine from an injury from a car accident. Over time,
- 24:04she became dependent on the pills, her drug use escalated,
- 24:08and she lost custody of her twin daughters. It wasn't
- 24:13until twenty twenty one that Ruby Lee decided to commit
- 24:17to recovery. Her son, James Ryan, was born addicted to
- 24:21opiate opiates and was at risk of losing another child.
- 24:26Judge Harris offered her another path. He gave me a
- 24:30choice to either go through the recovery program with him
- 24:34or lose him, said Ruby Lee. The ultimatum caused Ruby
- 24:39Lee to run out of the courtroom, but FRC team
- 24:44members Amanda Amanda m Hoff and Megan Mayne helped her
- 24:49find the confidence to take her first step toward a hopeful,
- 24:54healthy life for herself and James Ryan. I chose to
- 25:00go with him because I had already lost two of
- 25:03my kids and I didn't want to lose him. Ruby
- 25:06Lee first ended Freedom House, another fo VOA program that
- 25:13helps pregnant and parenting women find recovery. While the ninety
- 25:17day program, she volunteered to join FRC for additional support
- 25:21to help her maintain her newfound sobriety. She spent a
- 25:26year working with VOA, Judge Harris and DCVS to reach
- 25:33milestones that would help her become a successful sober parent
- 25:37and set her up for long term stability. Clay County's
- 25:43FRCS success has led to an expansion of the program
- 25:47across the region. Currently, the program serves parents in twelve
- 25:52counties across southeast Kentucky. Something Green by Melissa Garrison down
- 25:59Home with Melissa. Each year for Saint Patrick's Day, my
- 26:03husband's family has a green party. Yes, we have green eggs,
- 26:07green everything, pretty much, and it is so much fun.
- 26:11Traditions are something I truly love. There's comfort knowing that
- 26:15when a certain time of year comes around, we'll be
- 26:18celebrating in a certain way. This year, we gathered at
- 26:21my husband's family's catfish ponds. The kids played and fished
- 26:25while the adults ate and caught up with one another.
- 26:29I found that time together is incredibly important. The last
- 26:34howl Day I celebrate with my son before he passed
- 26:37away was the fourth of July. I will forever be
- 26:41thankful that he met us at the park for fireworks.
- 26:44It wasn't anything fancy, but it was time together and
- 26:49that's what matters most. Due to time restraints, I'm going
- 26:54to finish with the poems. She wrote at the end
- 26:56of this article. Happy March to you all. When's of March,
- 27:00we welcome you. There is work for you to do,
