- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Good evening, everybody! Welcome back to the Saga Book Club on 22 Panels!
- 0:10Tad Eggleston: Volume 10!
- 0:12Tad Eggleston: We have moved… moved beyond.
- 0:16Tad Eggleston: The heartbreaking one.
- 0:18Matt: Hey.
- 0:19Matt: This one was more heartbreaking for me at the end.
- 0:22Tad Eggleston: Was it? I mean, there are… I mean, there are…
- 0:26Tad Eggleston: This is not, like, a happy one.
- 0:29Matt: No.
- 0:30Marisol: No.
- 0:31Tad Eggleston: This is not a happy one.
- 0:34Matt: It was harder for me to see the ending of this one than it was for the ending of the other one.
- 0:38Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the ending of this one, I mean.
- 0:40Marisol: Particularly.
- 0:40Tad Eggleston: And because it's when it finally sinks in for Hazel.
- 0:43Matt: Yo.
- 0:44Tad Eggleston: Hazel's been in that denial phase this whole time.
- 0:47Matt: Yup.
- 0:50Tad Eggleston: And actually, I'm gonna… Lee, I'm already, like, we're gonna want you to be talking about Hazel and Squire some.
- 0:59Larry Woods: Oh, yeah.
- 1:00Tad Eggleston: You got the clinical experience.
- 1:03Tad Eggleston: And probably, probably Alana, cause, cause, like…
- 1:08Tad Eggleston: Alana's changed in some subtle ways, too.
- 1:11Matt: Oh, totally.
- 1:12Tad Eggleston: But, I do want to start with…
- 1:17Tad Eggleston: Like, there, there is, there is a…
- 1:20Tad Eggleston: One thing that I think needs to be, called out immediately.
- 1:25Tad Eggleston: Just because… It's amazing.
- 1:32Tad Eggleston: And that's, oh… See, I was dumb, I should've…
- 1:38Matt: Is it the pirate ship?
- 1:39Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, that is also amazing.
- 1:42Matt: It's one of my favorite… Panels from this entire series.
- 1:47Tad Eggleston: Oh, absolutely. But I'm going to…
- 1:49Tad Eggleston: I don't need to tell you what song I played, because you already know it by heart.
- 1:54Tad Eggleston: It's the one you first heard in the background of that chain restaurant where you were having lunch with your road-tripping family. Enraptured, you asked your parents what was playing, and they replied, I have no idea, but it's terrible.
- 2:09Tad Eggleston: And in this moment, you began to understand that the universe no longer belonged to the generation who raised you.
- 2:16Tad Eggleston: You could hear something that they couldn't. Something strange and beautiful and perfect.
- 2:22Tad Eggleston: By the time the final chords faded into nothingness, you were already changed forever.
- 2:29Tad Eggleston: That song, of course, was Assassins of Sadness by Fartbox.
- 2:36Matt: Art Box, one of my favorite bands.
- 2:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah, like, that…
- 2:48Tad Eggleston: I mean, this is… that's issue 55.
- 2:53Tad Eggleston: Not quite the end of 55, because, you know, the aforementioned pirate ship is the…
- 3:00Tad Eggleston: End of… well, not… also not quite the end of the 55, but…
- 3:05Tad Eggleston: Closer to the end of 55 was.
- 3:07Josh Eiserike: My max.
- 3:11Tad Eggleston: But that moment… was the first… for me… Like, major catharsis after.
- 3:28Tad Eggleston: Marco's death.
- 3:30Tad Eggleston: You know, so, okay.
- 3:33Tad Eggleston: The universe goes on.
- 3:36Tad Eggleston: And there's a band called Fartbox.
- 3:39Tad Eggleston: And that's fucking awesome.
- 3:43Tad Eggleston: So… Alright, now, now that I've read that, I, I, I, like…
- 3:49Tad Eggleston: I think I'm probably the only one here who's read this volume multiple times, so I… I want to let everybody else give their impressions first.
- 4:02Matt: I would totally buy baby formula from Alana, and I don't even have kids that age.
- 4:09Matt: Just sayin'.
- 4:12Matt: With or without a medallion, I don't care, I'm like, I'm cool, let's do it.
- 4:19Larry Woods: Well, I had a question for you, Matt, because you said that this volume
- 4:23Larry Woods: Made you more sad than the previous one.
- 4:27Matt: Yes, the ending.
- 4:28Tad Eggleston: Yes. Okay.
- 4:29Tad Eggleston: The end is…
- 4:32Larry Woods: So, the end is rough, but I guess…
- 4:37Larry Woods: What about it, for you, was more saddening about this volume than the previous one?
- 4:42Matt: So… the quote-unquote relationship that I had with Marco, and watching him die.
- 4:52Matt: was nothing compared to how Hazel felt at the end of this one, when she realizes it's all gone.
- 5:02Matt: You know what I'm saying? It's like, oh!
- 5:04Matt: And her whole world just crumbles and crashes down, and you can see it on her face, and this is why I love Fiona Staples. It's like, ugh!
- 5:14Matt: Total devastation.
- 5:18Matt: And her mother gets it, but there's nothing she can do.
- 5:23Josh Eiserike: I had a professor, a writing professor, shout out to Todd Robinson, who I know is not listening, but he was awesome. Go watch his movies, they're great.
- 5:32Tad Eggleston: Send him a link.
- 5:35Josh Eiserike: I had a writing professor who, talking about writing grief, I don't know if this is my story to share, but I'll share it anyway, talked about when he was a kid, his grandma died, and he was like, oh, that's sad.
- 5:47Josh Eiserike: And then, like, months later, his dog died, and it devastated him, and he didn't realize until years and years later, with the emotional maturity, that when his dog died, he was actually mourning his grandma. And I think…
- 6:00Josh Eiserike: That moment didn't hit me as sad.
- 6:05Josh Eiserike: in Saga, because it's like, oh, now she's finally able to grieve her father, and start the process of moving on. So yes, it is a sad moment, but it didn't… it didn't gut me the same way it gutted you, Matt.
- 6:23Matt: That's valid.
- 6:25Larry Woods: Yeah, cause, like.
- 6:26Larry Woods: my initial knee-jerk reaction was, like, what are you talking about? It wasn't, like, this was more sad. It's like, Marco died, like, what the hell? But even reflecting back on it, and…
- 6:41Larry Woods: re-reading it.
- 6:43Larry Woods: Marco was… it was a shock.
- 6:46Larry Woods: Right? So, for me, it was much more like, I just ran into a brick wall that I didn't know was there.
- 6:53Larry Woods: This one, even in the… the last, like, 3 or 4 pages, where you see… their house burning.
- 7:02Larry Woods: And then you have a flashback.
- 7:04Larry Woods: And we're back to house burning.
- 7:08Larry Woods: And I was like…
- 7:09Matt: It's… it's… it's like I… when I said my relationship with Marco.
- 7:15Matt: you also have a relationship with Hazel, and you've watched her mature, and she has not felt anything or given any sign of emotion, and now all of a sudden, it all comes out.
- 7:28Matt: It was like,
- 7:31Matt: So it was harder for me than watching Marco die.
- 7:38Larry Woods: No, 100%, and I'm thinking about it now, too, is… this may sound kind of like…
- 7:44Larry Woods: I'll throw it out there. But the relationship that we had with their home, as well.
- 7:50Larry Woods: It's…
- 7:52Larry Woods: again, it was her home for how long? How many years? And now that's kind of gone, and the last memories of her father being in the…
- 8:00Marisol: And not only was it just their home, like, it was a living thing, too.
- 8:06Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, you had the Hazel sneaking back in by a window that the rocket ship made for her.
- 8:14Tad Eggleston: Earlier in this, making it clear that they actually have a human… relationship.
- 8:27Larry Woods: So, yeah, reflecting back on it, I would… actually, I would 100% agree with you. I was more sad. I was shocked with the passing of Marco.
- 8:37Larry Woods: I was more saddened.
- 8:40Larry Woods: Because it was a loss of a relationship.
- 8:44Larry Woods: And I'm reflecting back, like, I remember Coco, if you've watched the movie Coco, where it's not just the person that
- 8:51Larry Woods: there's two deaths, the actual physical passing, and then there's the passing of memory, where you no longer remember them. So, like, to me, it was that, the relationship with the ship, the relationship with the father, and yeah, just the…
- 9:06Larry Woods: emotional breakdown.
- 9:08Larry Woods: Which was like, yeah, no, that's valid.
- 9:11Larry Woods: I was definitely more sad on this go-around.
- 9:15Matt: That ship was Hazel's whole world, and all of her memories.
- 9:20Matt: And it was just… Destroyed. Gone. In an instant.
- 9:29Larry Woods: And it goes back to kind of what you were saying, Josh, about
- 9:32Larry Woods: The, the passing of the grandmother, and then the passing of the dog.
- 9:37Larry Woods: the stage is grief, right? It's all about denial, and then…
- 9:41Larry Woods: And then, when it happens again, it's… all those anxieties, emotions, nerves, whatever it may be, compounds and it comes out, right?
- 9:50Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 9:52Larry Woods: Yeah.
- 9:55Larry Woods: Damn, talk about the expression of the human emotion from a wood rocket ship.
- 10:01Josh Eiserike: Right.
- 10:02Larry Woods: Living like a chip.
- 10:13Larry Woods: Yeah.
- 10:14Larry Woods: One thing I like, too, about,
- 10:17Larry Woods: Oh my god, Alana's, I forgot her name for a second. Alana's, Progression 2 is…
- 10:23Matt: Oh, to blow…
- 10:24Larry Woods: Oh.
- 10:26Larry Woods: Y-yuh?
- 10:28Larry Woods: Yeah.
- 10:28Matt: I'm kidding.
- 10:29Larry Woods: of… No, you're kidding.
- 10:31Larry Woods: Especially this, aspect of, like.
- 10:36Larry Woods: kind of, like, un… kind of unbeknownst to her, I believe, is the,
- 10:41Larry Woods: Single motherhood, finding her space, finding social support, right?
- 10:46Larry Woods: And even trying to find this newfound purpose. We're smugglers! We're drug dealers.
- 10:53Matt: Don't use this gap.
- 10:54Marisol: It's like.
- 10:58Larry Woods: What we do to find what we're good at.
- 11:01Larry Woods: So, yeah, for me, and so I don't want to take up too much of the talking space here, but at least with her, her journey has… in this one was the most interesting to me of what I've read so far, because it really shows a mother, a single mother.
- 11:21Larry Woods: even a single adopted mother with the squire, as well, is…
- 11:26Larry Woods: Trying to find or re-find her place in the world after she, in some ways, lost her world.
- 11:32Matt: Yeah, but do it… but trying to go legit as well. She could just stay a drug dealer, right?
- 11:39Matt: But she wants to be legit for her kids, and I'm like, that's awesome.
- 11:43Larry Woods: Yeah.
- 11:44Larry Woods: So, yeah, that was… that was a highlight for me, if I just tried to bring it up on a… on a positive note.
- 11:52Matt: Yeah, agreed, for sure.
- 11:56Josh Eiserike: There's a line in here that I'm looking for about Alana, I'm trying to find it, but something Hazel says in the narration…
- 12:03Josh Eiserike: leads me to believe Alana's not making it out of this.
- 12:07Josh Eiserike: Either.
- 12:10Matt: None of us do, so I'm not sure.
- 12:11Josh Eiserike: Sure.
- 12:13Larry Woods: You dare?
- 12:17Larry Woods: You had to put it out there, didn't you?
- 12:25Larry Woods: Now I'm curious, because you already… you already put it in my head.
- 12:30Larry Woods: About, like, the saga and what's gonna happen.
- 12:32Josh Eiserike: Yeah, I'm trying to find it. There was something in there. This isn't it, but I like, when she's playing guitar, she says, the older I get, the closer to him I feel.
- 12:43Josh Eiserike: No matter how many light years my family traveled, Dad was never that far away.
- 12:48Josh Eiserike: What was it?
- 12:53Josh Eiserike: Oh, here it is. This is in… What chapter is this?
- 12:59Josh Eiserike: 58.
- 13:02Josh Eiserike: There's a… there's a panel of Alana, and the narration says, a lot of creators hope their work outlives them, but that's not some… but that's something… that's not something any of us can control.
- 13:15Josh Eiserike: And I'm like, yeah.
- 13:18Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 13:23Tad Eggleston: I mean, unfortunately, probably, yeah, But fuck you for noticing that.
- 13:32Marisol: How dare you call attention to that?
- 13:35Matt: Could you have just said…
- 13:35Marisol: Battling.
- 13:36Matt: Whaler alert?
- 13:38Josh Eiserike: Yeah, I mean, this is… this is all speculative, so…
- 13:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it is special.
- 13:41Matt: I'll give you a little spoiler alert.
- 13:43Josh Eiserike: what I said before.
- 13:44Josh Eiserike: Before we started recording, this is, this is when I dropped off, like, and in fact, like, I… the moment I dropped off was the end of 57.
- 13:54Josh Eiserike: Like, I remember that, what is that guy, Bombazine, the koala Man? .
- 13:59Marisol: Yeah.
- 14:00Josh Eiserike: like, where he says, copy that, which is such a great cliffhanger, because it's got, like, the double meaning. And then I start reading 58, and I'm like, oh, I don't remember this at all.
- 14:10Josh Eiserike: So, from here on out, this is all new for me.
- 14:19Tad Eggleston: Now.
- 14:22Larry Woods: Interesting.
- 14:26Larry Woods: So, remind me again, why did you stop?
- 14:30Josh Eiserike: Life.
- 14:31Josh Eiserike: Like, I just…
- 14:32Larry Woods: Yeah, that's true.
- 14:34Josh Eiserike: I have a stack of comics.
- 14:36Josh Eiserike: I… I get to them when I can, and I just… I just kind of forgot.
- 14:41Josh Eiserike: And then I was like, oh, I need to sit down, and I was like, I don't remember what happened, I need to sit down and catch up, I don't know when the next issue's coming out, do I have them all? Like, I love my comic book store, but there's been a couple times I've missed an issue, you know, fine, no big deal. And then this podcast started.
- 14:57Tad Eggleston: Missing an issue with Saga is a big deal.
- 15:00Josh Eiserike: Well, and then the podcast started, so I was like, great, now I have no excuses, I'm gonna go back, I'm gonna reread everything, and it's gonna be awesome.
- 15:12Tad Eggleston: I mean, there are certain things that I… that I… that I fall into that…
- 15:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Missed an issue, no big deal.
- 15:19Tad Eggleston: But, Lee, since you pull my comics right now, Saga is not one of them.
- 15:26Larry Woods: Oh, anybody that gets Saga, that pulls Saga…
- 15:30Tad Eggleston: Fucking jump over the counter and brain you.
- 15:33Larry Woods: Well, we have a sign! No, Saga, I will strong-arm Edgar into making sure we have
- 15:41Larry Woods: The saga on the shelves.
- 15:44Larry Woods: And in the polls.
- 15:45Tad Eggleston: I mean, as soon as we have, like, significant bookshelves, I'll be…
- 15:49Tad Eggleston: strong-arming him to, you know, we should have, like, 10 copies of Volume 1,
- 15:55Tad Eggleston: And 3 copies of every other volume on… on hand it.
- 16:00Tad Eggleston: all times.
- 16:03Tad Eggleston: Cause that's… that's legitimately, like…
- 16:11Tad Eggleston: Numbers that are, are, are completely doable on a weekend.
- 16:16Larry Woods: Oh, yeah.
- 16:19Larry Woods: And…
- 16:21Larry Woods: That's, like, my number one go-to recommendation. Somebody's like, hey, I actually just had it the other day. He's like, hey, what's an independent book that you would recommend?
- 16:29Larry Woods: That's like your trade format, saga.
- 16:32Larry Woods: What's it about? Boy, let me tell you. And, he's like, oh, I'm just thinking about it. I'm like, alright, consider it. Seriously. Now's the time to catch up.
- 16:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's coming back, I think.
- 16:45Tad Eggleston: Late summer?
- 16:47Tad Eggleston: I feel like is…
- 16:48Marisol: Oh, nice.
- 16:50Tad Eggleston: that I've been hearing.
- 16:53Tad Eggleston: So… Yeah… I love Hazel in this volume.
- 17:01Tad Eggleston: I love…
- 17:02Matt: Doesn't.
- 17:02Tad Eggleston: Negative music… I love her.
- 17:09Tad Eggleston: being rebellious.
- 17:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah, like… I was saying, off-air, like…
- 17:26Tad Eggleston: Re-reading this, it's like, okay, yeah, this is so what…
- 17:31Tad Eggleston: And yes, there's still sadness, and yes, there's still, like, a long way to go.
- 17:38Tad Eggleston: But the fact that Hazel's still discovering new things, the fact that
- 17:47Tad Eggleston: Like, Squire's going through shit.
- 17:49Matt: Big time.
- 17:51Marisol: He's just…
- 17:51Tad Eggleston: find joy… In… in Hazel and Music.
- 17:56Tad Eggleston: an alarm.
- 17:57Matt: Well, he hopes to find joy in his.
- 18:00Tad Eggleston: And Alana has… like… Completely adopted him. Not, like, taken him off.
- 18:08Marisol: And I love that.
- 18:09Tad Eggleston: like…
- 18:12Marisol: I love that for Squire.
- 18:16Josh Eiserike: I… I loved the Chuck E. Cheese, they… they go through that one.
- 18:21Marisol: Right?
- 18:24Tad Eggleston: this.
- 18:25Matt: Yeah, I wanna play the sock puppet game.
- 18:27Josh Eiserike: Yeah, like, I… as a kid, Chuck E. Cheese was the greatest. As an adult, it's the worst.
- 18:33Matt: Yo.
- 18:34Josh Eiserike: But I… I love just, like, the joy of reading it, and those kids, and, like, how much fun they're having there, and that they're able to emotionally connect with, you know, the sock puppet game, or whatever.
- 18:46Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 18:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I just… Well, and I just… I love music and comics, and he nails it.
- 18:59Josh Eiserike: Yup.
- 19:00Tad Eggleston: I love that music has been introduced to Saga and, like, hard.
- 19:06Tad Eggleston: Not, not, not like it just slid in, it's like…
- 19:13Tad Eggleston: It's like, in-in.
- 19:17Tad Eggleston: It went from being something that you barely knew that it was in the universe of Saga to… it's the center of Hazel's universe.
- 19:26Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 19:27Tad Eggleston: Fiona draws it brilliantly.
- 19:34Tad Eggleston: Of course.
- 19:41Josh Eiserike: I also love that the instruments, like, some are, like, completely recognizable, and some are like, well, I've never seen that before, but it looks like it makes sense in this world, so I'm gonna go…
- 19:50Matt: It looks legit.
- 19:51Tad Eggleston: Well, and I love that it's one of the recognizable ones that Hazel doesn't know.
- 19:55Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 19:55Tad Eggleston: Of course.
- 20:00Tad Eggleston: Oh, I teased last time that it was page 38.
- 20:06Tad Eggleston: is when I knew that I would never, ever, EVER… Forgive the will?
- 20:15Tad Eggleston: Again?
- 20:18Marisol: Which page is that?
- 20:19Matt: squared?
- 20:28Matt: When he takes the skull to Gwendolyn? Yeah.
- 20:31Marisol: Whoa.
- 20:31Tad Eggleston: Not when he takes the skull to Gwendolyn.
- 20:36Josh Eiserike: What he does after?
- 20:39Matt: the skull to the… With the skull.
- 20:41Tad Eggleston: there. It's like, here, let me…
- 20:45Marisol: Some extra disrespect.
- 20:47Tad Eggleston: This panel just…
- 20:50Matt: This skull really does not give any shits.
- 20:54Josh Eiserike: I'm still Steam Will. I'm Steam Team. He has gotten his life back together, he's doing great.
- 21:00Matt: Yep, agreed. And he's like, you know what, and I'm gonna bang this hot chick.
- 21:03Larry Woods: You know, Josh, I… I respect that you're dying on this hill.
- 21:15Tad Eggleston: I want Will to die an incredibly slow and painful death.
- 21:22Matt: He probably will.
- 21:25Josh Eiserike: Oh, for sure.
- 21:28Marisol: It's a matter of when at this point, not if, honestly.
- 21:32Matt: he's lasted longer than characters I thought were gonna last longer.
- 21:36Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 21:39Larry Woods: Me and Life is Marco?
- 21:42Matt: Prince Robot, yeah?
- 21:48Tad Eggleston: Any, any predictions on, what the thing with, uncle… Uncle Bum…
- 21:59Josh Eiserike: Bombazole? Bombazier.
- 22:01Tad Eggleston: Magazine.
- 22:03Tad Eggleston: is, cause I don't think his story's over.
- 22:06Josh Eiserike: Well.
- 22:06Matt: Well, clearly not.
- 22:07Marisol: Nope.
- 22:08Josh Eiserike: This was the one thing that didn't work for me.
- 22:11Josh Eiserike: Really in this whole series so far.
- 22:19Marisol: Nope.
- 22:20Josh Eiserike: Well, first of all, like, what I like, like, he totally gives me, like, Treasure Planet, Long John Silver vibes.
- 22:27Marisol: Yes.
- 22:28Josh Eiserike: Which I'm super excited.
- 22:29Marisol: be it.
- 22:31Josh Eiserike: Which, but, like, koala, instead of, like, I don't know what animal Long John Silver was in that movie, but, like, yeah, but, like, he's got the cleaver, so he's, like, the space cook, or…
- 22:40Josh Eiserike: Whatever, like…
- 22:41Josh Eiserike: Interesting character, but we don't know enough about him, other than he and Alana have some sort of… arrangement…
- 22:49Matt: relationship.
- 22:51Josh Eiserike: Yeah, it's lasted 18 months, that's just what we're told.
- 22:55Josh Eiserike: And he clearly has something in his past, but then he leaves before, you know, I can care about him. So when he leaves, I don't care.
- 23:04Josh Eiserike: Because I'm not a…
- 23:05Matt: You're supposed to care, because you're supposed to care, because you're like, oh, Alana saw something good in him. So, why all of a sudden is he leaving?
- 23:14Josh Eiserike: But I don't know… but I don't.
- 23:16Tad Eggleston: I'm actually…
- 23:17Josh Eiserike: about him.
- 23:17Tad Eggleston: I don't disagree that… I don't care.
- 23:23Tad Eggleston: For that matter, I'll take it a step further, like, given the vibe between him and Skip.
- 23:32Tad Eggleston: I'm actually kinda happy.
- 23:35Tad Eggleston: Because I'm praying that whatever is in his past, whatever he's about to do for Skip, has nothing to do with Alana, Hazel, and Squire.
- 23:47Matt: Yes, and it's nefarious. Probably not, yeah. And…
- 23:50Tad Eggleston: But at the same time, there's enough there…
- 23:54Tad Eggleston: that I don't think it's an accident, I don't think it's gonna be something that happens off-screen. We're gonna see him again, and I don't know which side he's gonna be on.
- 24:04Matt: one-eyed koala… or one-armed Koala man is coming back, absolutely.
- 24:07Josh Eiserike: I wouldn't…
- 24:08Marisol: Oh, yeah. He has.
- 24:09Josh Eiserike: But I just… I just… again, like, I don't think his leaving was this big emotional moment that I think it was meant to be. Like, it just kind of fell flat for me.
- 24:18Matt: It's because… it's because he was only in 2 or 3 issues.
- 24:22Tad Eggleston: I mean, I guess I didn't even feel like it was supposed to be an emotional moment.
- 24:27Matt: Oh, no, it was supposed to be.
- 24:29Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 24:30Josh Eiserike: I think so. I thought so.
- 24:32Matt: that's why him and Alana have words at the end, and he says mean things.
- 24:39Josh Eiserike: Like, I… I love the, like, Hazel explaining their shorthand with each other, and then that cliffhanger where he's like, copy that, and I'm like, oh, this… this guy's…
- 24:49Josh Eiserike: this guy's got something in his past, I need to know more, like, I'm interested in this character, and then he leaves, and he's gone, and I'm just like, well, but I didn't get to like him, I just… he just introduced a mystery.
- 25:00Josh Eiserike: And then, now he's gone.
- 25:03Marisol: But I need to know more!
- 25:04Matt: intriguing.
- 25:05Josh Eiserike: We're gonna see him again.
- 25:05Matt: Super launched it.
- 25:07Marisol: We better see him again. I need to know more about Bombay.
- 25:10Matt: God, if we don't, that would be the funniest fucking cliffhanger in comic book history.
- 25:16Marisol: Don't be pissed.
- 25:19Matt: Brian K. Vaughan would hate.
- 25:21Tad Eggleston: Fiona drew him for, like, 3 issues and said, Brian, I really hate this guy, he's a pain in the neck, can you just write him out?
- 25:29Matt: I think I'm gonna go with Skip, and that's storyline ends.
- 25:33Matt: It'd be hilarious!
- 25:36Josh Eiserike: That was a great page you just showed.
- 25:38Tad Eggleston: that the…
- 25:39Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 25:40Marisol: Yay.
- 25:42Matt: We know what his, Pornhub search bar says. Step sister.
- 25:47Marisol: Oh, lord.
- 25:51Larry Woods: You said the inside thought out loud.
- 25:52Tad Eggleston: argument he makes.
- 25:54Tad Eggleston: when they're… you know, before they… when they finally talk about it, I like the argument he makes, you know.
- 26:01Tad Eggleston: Your parents weren't supposed to get together either. Yum.
- 26:05Matt: That was not supposed to work, yeah?
- 26:09Marisol: Absolutely!
- 26:10Josh Eiserike: Have they seen Clueless?
- 26:13Josh Eiserike: To the end.
- 26:14Tad Eggleston: name?
- 26:15Josh Eiserike: The Alicia Silverstone movie from 19… was it 95?
- 26:18Tad Eggleston: I've seen it, so, I mean, I could totally see… that's… that's what's gonna happen, is… is Squire's gonna find that and show it to…
- 26:26Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 26:27Tad Eggleston: Show it to… to… to Hazel, and…
- 26:31Josh Eiserike: And then she's gonna be, but you're not Paul Rudd.
- 26:36Marisol: Dang.
- 26:41Tad Eggleston: How about the… this,
- 26:45Tad Eggleston: I mean, two things. First, the turn with, agent Gale…
- 26:52Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 26:56Matt: Is it just me, or does this trade have the most sex in it so far?
- 27:02Marisol: Go!
- 27:03Tad Eggleston: the most…
- 27:04Matt: It was just very prominent, though. I was like, oh…
- 27:08Tad Eggleston: I think… I think it has the most non…
- 27:12Tad Eggleston: Marco Alana, and I think it has the most prominent male genitalia.
- 27:17Matt: Lots of dong in this issue.
- 27:19Marisol: Yes.
- 27:20Matt: I feel like Corbyn drew this issue.
- 27:23Tad Eggleston: I was about to say, I think, I think maybe Fiona was, was going through Den…
- 27:31Matt: Oh, that's awesome!
- 27:36Larry Woods: I'm not gonna analyze this.
- 27:43Tad Eggleston: So, Lee, what does it say that we're seeing more… and use your best Freud voice to talk about the penises.
- 27:52Matt: Lay back on my cup. I'm plentiful.
- 27:54Marisol: they are.
- 28:00Matt: Some are growers, some are showers.
- 28:08Tad Eggleston: This broke my heart.
- 28:11Josh Eiserike: Yup.
- 28:12Tad Eggleston: It's like.
- 28:12Marisol: No, no.
- 28:13Tad Eggleston: No, you don't have to just go kill the kid in Alana. You need to kill everybody.
- 28:19Matt: I feel bad that the report of the photographer had to die last TP.
- 28:24Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 28:24Matt: come back.
- 28:25Marisol: Right?
- 28:42Tad Eggleston: The fish guy.
- 28:46Matt: I love how he obliterates the skull.
- 28:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 28:50Matt: Because now that is no longer a pawn, Marco has been, like, vindicated.
- 28:56Tad Eggleston: Nobody can fuck in front of the skull anymore.
- 28:59Matt: Yup.
- 29:02Matt: Unless it's the pirate ship, Skull.
- 29:06Matt: In which case.
- 29:07Marisol: That's cool.
- 29:08Matt: You're doing the whole Titanic out on the boat.
- 29:12Tad Eggleston: I love the photo booth cover of Chapter 60.
- 29:18Josh Eiserike: Yeah…
- 29:19Matt: That's cute.
- 29:24Tad Eggleston: It's just absolutely adorable.
- 29:27Matt: I like the goldfish cover a little bit more, but that's okay.
- 29:30Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 29:31Tad Eggleston: But I also adore the… how much of an utter badass…
- 29:37Tad Eggleston: Mark… I mean, Marco's mom's always been a badass, but, like, she's… she's gone up a notch.
- 29:43Matt: Prison meet her hard.
- 29:45Tad Eggleston: And apparently, like, she runs the prison.
- 29:48Matt: Yep.
- 29:49Tad Eggleston: I mean, I love the…
- 29:51Matt: finished watching Orange is the New Black, so I have a different understanding of that.
- 29:56Josh Eiserike: Right.
- 29:57Matt: Segment after watching that show.
- 30:01Josh Eiserike: I'm surprised you made it through the last couple of seasons.
- 30:04Matt: Ugh, my wife was done with it, but I was like, nope, gotta see this through.
- 30:07Josh Eiserike: Had to see it through! I was the same way.
- 30:10Matt: Because there's lesbian movies.
- 30:13Matt: I'm kidding.
- 30:15Marisol: Makes it all worth it.
- 30:16Matt: That's right, that's right.
- 30:28Marisol: I just love that we get to see Marco's mom again, after so long.
- 30:31Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 30:32Matt: Oh, yeah, we… I'd written.
- 30:33Tad Eggleston: Well, and I'm certain that we're not done with her. I mean, the way we saw her.
- 30:36Marisol: Oh, for sure.
- 30:37Josh Eiserike: Yeah, I was surprised.
- 30:40Josh Eiserike: And to that, you know, to the page we looked at earlier with the other characters, like, I like how that's a subtle reminder that, oh yeah, no, we're not done with any of these threads.
- 30:51Josh Eiserike: Which is nice.
- 30:57Tad Eggleston: Chuck E. Cheese is just great.
- 30:59Matt: How would child… How do you pronounce the, the tranny's name?
- 31:05Tad Eggleston: I can't remember.
- 31:06Josh Eiserike: Petracors?
- 31:08Tad Eggleston: Hunter core, yeah.
- 31:09Matt: Petracorp. I really will be interested to see
- 31:14Matt: what situation Petracor is in when…
- 31:19Matt: we finally catch up with him. Her, her, sorry.
- 31:25Josh Eiserike: Go back to the image of that Chuck E. Cheese.
- 31:28Josh Eiserike: The, the exterior?
- 31:30Josh Eiserike: Yeah, that's… I mean, this is probably any Chuck E. Cheese, but that's the Burbank Chuck E. Cheese.
- 31:37Tad Eggleston: Douglas L.
- 31:38Tad Eggleston: Zips, zip.
- 31:39Josh Eiserike: Yeah, I'm just looking at, like, the, the…
- 31:42Josh Eiserike: Like, I wonder if he got… because he lives in Sherman Oaks, which is, like, 20 minutes away. I'm wondering if he got in his car, drove over to Burbank, snapped a picture, sent it to Fiona.
- 31:52Tad Eggleston: That seems reasonable.
- 31:54Matt: or Google Street View.
- 31:57Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 31:59Josh Eiserike: That would be more logical.
- 32:01Tad Eggleston: Either one seems completely reasonable.
- 32:04Josh Eiserike: And of course, there's probably dozens of Chuck E. Cheese's strip mall and strip malls.
- 32:08Tad Eggleston: He might not have gotten…
- 32:09Tad Eggleston: up and driven over, he might have thought he had his kids there for the birthday party, you know?
- 32:15Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 32:16Tad Eggleston: Took a picture and said that.
- 32:19Matt: No plot.
- 32:19Josh Eiserike: Yes.
- 32:20Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 32:24Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 32:24Tad Eggleston: remembered.
- 32:25Josh Eiserike: It's that birthday party there.
- 32:26Tad Eggleston: This child is about the same age as Saga.
- 32:32Josh Eiserike: Yeah, I… I… when my kids have birthday parties there, I'm like, no, I'm not. Absolutely not.
- 32:41Larry Woods: I'm not gonna lie, like, it's… I definitely was a Chuck E. Cheese kid growing up.
- 32:46Josh Eiserike: Oh, I loved it!
- 32:46Larry Woods: But… My god, they changed the thing, and the retinol is just… it's weird.
- 32:54Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 32:55Tad Eggleston: I was always… I,
- 32:59Tad Eggleston: We actually had a showbiz, so I was a showbiz kid that, like, when Chuck E. Cheese bought out showbiz, I missed…
- 33:09Tad Eggleston: I didn't like the new band, I liked the old band…
- 33:12Larry Woods: Hmm.
- 33:13Tad Eggleston: No, they're all animatronic, but… But the bear was cooler than the rat.
- 33:19Larry Woods: Hmm.
- 33:22Larry Woods: They can see that.
- 33:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I love this panel here, the horns Plus.
- 33:30Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 33:33Matt: But that's, like, dude… OPSEC! Don't be showing that where anyone can see it.
- 33:39Tad Eggleston: Well, yeah.
- 33:40Josh Eiserike: True.
- 33:40Tad Eggleston: That's exactly what she said. Put your colors away! Dummy!
- 33:43Matt: Come on!
- 33:51Tad Eggleston: Also, am I the only one that thought it was air hockey until they got.
- 33:56Josh Eiserike: Oh, I thought it was air hot, too.
- 33:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 33:59Matt: what else would it be?
- 34:02Marisol: Clearly…
- 34:02Tad Eggleston: token.
- 34:03Matt: It doesn't give out in seconds.
- 34:15Marisol: Funky little puppets.
- 34:19Larry Woods: Good point.
- 34:19Josh Eiserike: I love Squire's expression in that panel there. Just, like, the way he's cocking his head.
- 34:24Matt: That's crazy.
- 34:25Josh Eiserike: It's great. Like, the body language tells you everything you need to know.
- 34:29Matt: For the wreck.
- 34:30Tad Eggleston: I ended up beating him 9-3.
- 34:33Larry Woods: Yup.
- 34:35Larry Woods: And you can tell, like, that is… he is his father's son.
- 34:40Tad Eggleston: Well, and I also love that,
- 34:43Tad Eggleston: I love him, like, walking with his sword here. Like, his screen is their flashlight. He looks so happy.
- 34:55Tad Eggleston: And that just doesn't…
- 34:56Marisol: deserves it.
- 34:58Marisol: He deserves to be happy.
- 35:01Tad Eggleston: It's like, happy, happy, happy fall.
- 35:09Matt: Well, if you don't write characters that people will like, and then do bad things to them, you'll not… you're not a good writer, so…
- 35:19Marisol: Clearly, the whole point of writing is to torture your characters. What else is?
- 35:22Matt: Your characters and your readers at the same time.
- 35:25Tad Eggleston: And I just, like, like, the, the matter-of-fact last line, And then we were homeless.
- 35:33Matt: Yep.
- 35:34Josh Eiserike: Yup.
- 35:35Matt: Mmm…
- 35:36Marisol: Ugh.
- 35:37Matt: Quick question, did anyone feel bad for King Robot?
- 35:42Tad Eggleston: Little…
- 35:43Matt: I didn't!
- 35:45Marisol: Not really.
- 35:46Matt: He's a dick, Prince Robot was a dick, so I'm like, okay, dick's…
- 35:50Tad Eggleston: No, I… the way I felt bad for him is…
- 35:53Matt: He's the rich!
- 35:55Tad Eggleston: I, I feel like he… Was regretting the way he treated his son.
- 36:03Matt: Oh, amazing.
- 36:04Marisol: Sure.
- 36:06Matt: Did anyone catch.
- 36:07Tad Eggleston: And as somebody who's occasionally not been the father that I wanted to be, I, I, I, like, I relate to that.
- 36:13Matt: Yeah, I can see it.
- 36:16Marisol: My only question with King Robot is how he does his whole disappear and reappearing act. He's just kinda…
- 36:22Marisol: glitches into existence.
- 36:25Josh Eiserike: Yeah, I was a little confused.
- 36:33Tad Eggleston: I assume that.
- 36:34Matt: I caught you up.
- 36:35Tad Eggleston: projection.
- 36:39Marisol: You think?
- 36:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 36:44Matt: Did anybody catch the line, you speak above your channel, woman, instead of station? I love that.
- 36:51Matt: That's just such a subtle, yet… profound statement.
- 36:57Larry Woods: lover.
- 36:58Matt: Yes, very clever. I thought it was very clever.
- 37:01Tad Eggleston: Thoughts… thoughts on the message that he was sent?
- 37:07Matt: Yeah, I don't get that.
- 37:10Matt: It did not make sense to me.
- 37:13Tad Eggleston: Like, I don't remember exactly, but I remember certain things, so I don't want to make any comments.
- 37:19Larry Woods: Okay.
- 37:20Matt: Do you think you might be remembering something that's farther ahead?
- 37:23Tad Eggleston: Well, no, I do remember some things that are farther ahead, is what I'm saying. So, like, I have an idea of, like, what was meant there.
- 37:33Tad Eggleston: So I don't wanna get into it… Specifically.
- 37:42Matt: Can I just have one image there.
- 37:45Matt: for Alana, that the drug deal went well. Like, it could have gone so horribly wrong. Oh, yeah.
- 37:51Tad Eggleston: I was so weird.
- 37:54Tad Eggleston: Ugh.
- 37:57Tad Eggleston: That was, like, the most tense sequence of Saga. It's like, no. No, no, no, she can't lose two parents this fast.
- 38:05Tad Eggleston: Cool the koala guy looks.
- 38:09Matt: Exactly. And it could just go smooth. I'm like, that would never happen, ever. Yeah.
- 38:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I was waiting for the shoe to drop.
- 38:22Tad Eggleston: Right up until they left.
- 38:24Matt: Yup!
- 38:25Matt: I'm like, she's gonna get shot, she's gonna get taken.
- 38:28Tad Eggleston: But then… On another level, it was like the head fake for losing the ship.
- 38:36Matt: Exactly.
- 38:37Josh Eiserike: the next stop.
- 38:39Matt: Exactly.
- 38:43Tad Eggleston: You go legit, you have a party, and then…
- 38:48Marisol: disaster.
- 38:49Matt: Put you on the deck.
- 38:57Tad Eggleston: So…
- 38:57Larry Woods: No.
- 38:58Tad Eggleston: This is what I was, this is what I was… I was… I was referring to here.
- 39:04Tad Eggleston: And I want, I want, you know.
- 39:07Marisol: Sometimes we'll happen.
- 39:07Tad Eggleston: ask our kids to make predictions about what will come next.
- 39:16Tad Eggleston: you know, it's, beats me, but I'm supposed to deliver this message with it. Wishing you a peaceful anniversary.
- 39:27Tad Eggleston: But the Robot Jubilee isn't for months. The hell kind of thinly veiled threat is that?
- 39:33Tad Eggleston: It's alright, X.
- 39:34Matt: M.
- 39:35Tad Eggleston: Tell your employers that their transmission was… well received.
- 39:40Matt: Saved.
- 39:41Tad Eggleston: Sometimes a little backstory is all it takes to change the course of history.
- 39:49Matt: Yeah, what anniversary?
- 39:52Tad Eggleston: What backstory?
- 39:53Matt: Yeah.
- 39:54Marisol: Maybe have some kind of deal?
- 39:56Marisol: That we find out about further down the road?
- 40:01Marisol: Excess Monday.
- 40:03Josh Eiserike: Yeah, I don't know what to make of this.
- 40:06Josh Eiserike: And until you brought it up, Ted, I didn't even remember it.
- 40:11Tad Eggleston: Well, and I'll admit that, like, remembering a little bit of what it means is why I really caught it. I don't know if it, like, sunk in.
- 40:22Tad Eggleston: But that's when the teacher in me kicks in, like, it's…
- 40:26Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean, you don't always notice it when you're a kid, but almost any time where teachers ask you to make predictions, it's because there's been foreshadowing.
- 40:37Matt: Right.
- 40:43Tad Eggleston: You know, it's not this… this accidental, oh, let's just choose today to make predictions. It's like, oh.
- 40:51Tad Eggleston: Something happened in your reading today.
- 40:54Josh Eiserike: Right.
- 40:57Tad Eggleston: That… that you could extrapolate from.
- 41:00Josh Eiserike: Right.
- 41:09Marisol: Well, I'm thinking there has to be some kind of…
- 41:13Marisol: There has to be some kind of agreement or deal between… the robot kingdom, and wreath.
- 41:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 41:25Marisol: And I just feel like it's a little… at least to me, it came up a little more suspicious, too, because Gwendolyn has come up higher on their counsel.
- 41:37Tad Eggleston: Well, Gwendolyn's pretty clearly the one that came up with this. I think there's actually…
- 41:42Tad Eggleston: foreshadowing of this back with Gwendolyn, because it… oh, yeah.
- 41:48Marisol: Oh, yeah, because she tells a little bit.
- 41:50Tad Eggleston: You're an assh.
- 41:50Marisol: I saved her career.
- 41:51Tad Eggleston: and it's gonna get us both killed. No, this is careful and methodical political maneuver that will save your neck and quite possibly my entire moon.
- 42:05Tad Eggleston: Just look his majesty in the eye, stick to the script, you've had a week-long journey to rehearse, and oh, try not to accidentally let it slip that you assassinated his son.
- 42:16Josh Eiserike: Right.
- 42:19Marisol: I love that comment afterwards from him. Assassinate is a loaded term, Gwen.
- 42:30Marisol: This we'll probably get to see.
- 42:34Marisol: A little later, if the deal is with that.
- 42:37Tad Eggleston: I think this is gonna be a next volume thing. Again, I can't remember, because the next two volumes, I haven't read in their volume form at all. I've only read the single issues.
- 42:51Marisol: So…
- 42:53Matt: this is right around where I stopped reading, because I missed a couple of issues, and I was like, I'm not going back in floppies, blah blah blah. So, everything I'm reading now is fresh, for me.
- 43:06Josh Eiserike: And there's only… at the time we're recording this, there's only 2 more volumes, yeah?
- 43:11Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 43:12Josh Eiserike: Oh, wow.
- 43:13Marisol: I know!
- 43:16Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 43:17Tad Eggleston: Two more volumes, and then we'll have to decide… If we're… Gonna just, .
- 43:26Larry Woods: This is the issue.
- 43:27Matt: For the trade paperback?
- 43:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah, wait for the next trade, if we're gonna…
- 43:33Tad Eggleston: Go issue to issue, if we're gonna…
- 43:37Tad Eggleston: read other stuff in between, I think that's my vote.
- 43:41Tad Eggleston: Is to expand the book club so that, like, it's a saga book club in months where a saga trade comes out, and…
- 43:49Matt: Nice.
- 43:50Tad Eggleston: It's other stuff.
- 43:52Tad Eggleston: In between.
- 43:53Marisol: In between.
- 43:56Matt: What would the other stuff be, Tad?
- 44:00Tad Eggleston: I haven't thought that far, though I feel like I need to do, that Texas Blood reread. I feel like I need to do a mind management reread.
- 44:14Josh Eiserike: I'm the…
- 44:14Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 44:15Matt: You haven't done 100 bullets yet.
- 44:18Tad Eggleston: Not on the show, but I did just do a reread on my own.
- 44:22Matt: Oh, nice.
- 44:24Josh Eiserike: I'm doing a reread, also because I never finished it, of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen right now.
- 44:29Matt: Oh, nice.
- 44:30Josh Eiserike: That… it's astounding. Like, I liked it, and now, like, reading it again, like, even older, like, understanding more of what he's doing, it's so good.
- 44:38Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 44:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah. So yeah, there are lots of options.
- 44:43Matt: Well, I'm excited for whatever.
- 44:45Tad Eggleston: But we have to figure that out.
- 44:50Marisol: that time.
- 44:51Tad Eggleston: As always, I feel like Fiona continues to not just steal the show, but up her game.
- 45:06Marisol: Oh, that poor little fish.
- 45:14Tad Eggleston: I love the music coming out of the ship here.
- 45:18Marisol: Right, like, out of the center of the skull, that's cool.
- 45:23Matt: Everything about that ship is cool.
- 45:26Tad Eggleston: And I can read music now.
- 45:28Tad Eggleston: and even something I knew you COULD read before I got here.
- 45:35Josh Eiserike: What… what animal is, like, guitar? Like, I'm looking at her, and I'm like, I can't… I can't figure it out.
- 45:41Tad Eggleston: I think she's humanoid.
- 45:43Josh Eiserike: Humanoid. Well, if it's just, like, the teeth.
- 45:46Larry Woods: Yeah.
- 45:47Marisol: Yeah.
- 45:47Tad Eggleston: So she… maybe she's like a… well…
- 45:51Marisol: The teeth made me think of, at first, like, some kind of weird spider, just… yeah.
- 45:57Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 45:57Marisol: She doesn't have any other spider qualities?
- 46:01Larry Woods: Yeah, I mean…
- 46:02Tad Eggleston: Maybe some sort of.
- 46:04Matt: Oh my god.
- 46:04Josh Eiserike: egg.
- 46:06Josh Eiserike: B.
- 46:06Larry Woods: That was thinking, like, rodent.
- 46:07Tad Eggleston: fake as possible.
- 46:09Tad Eggleston: I mean, it could be a nod to… to, like…
- 46:14Matt: Reptile.
- 46:15Larry Woods: often.
- 46:15Tad Eggleston: Vampirella, or…
- 46:17Josh Eiserike: Or what?
- 46:17Tad Eggleston: whatnot.
- 46:21Tad Eggleston: I mean, particularly for…
- 46:23Marisol: A rodent?
- 46:25Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 46:26Josh Eiserike: I, I also really.
- 46:28Tad Eggleston: A rat-type thing going.
- 46:29Marisol: Yeah.
- 46:30Josh Eiserike: I really like the, the punk rock, robot with the painted orange monitor, like, that's awesome.
- 46:42Tad Eggleston: And what's this t-shirt say?
- 46:44Matt: I love how that's like dyeing your hair in robot hair. That's really, yeah, it's very well thought.
- 46:49Tad Eggleston: I love… I love that Squire's a ridiculous drummer.
- 46:53Josh Eiserike: Yeah That was great.
- 46:59Marisol: Just look at him go.
- 47:05Marisol: Having a great time.
- 47:13Tad Eggleston: I like this cover, too.
- 47:14Matt: G8.
- 47:20Marisol: Oh, that end… panel with bombazine.
- 47:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 47:26Marisol: He just looks so menacingly just standing there with the big ol' cleaver.
- 47:31Matt: Yep.
- 47:33Matt: And right there, you know he's the guy she's talking about.
- 47:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 47:38Marisol: Exactly.
- 47:40Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 47:44Marisol: And again, it's just… I need him to come back. I need to know his story.
- 47:49Matt: The koala Killer.
- 48:07Marisol: Also, I noticed in a later panel,
- 48:11Marisol: When Hazel's practicing her guitar, her watch has changed, too.
- 48:17Tad Eggleston: Well, remember, because the birthday present one only lasted for 6 months.
- 48:22Matt: Yes. Yeah. But I didn't notice the difference.
- 48:27Marisol: Yeah, because now the latent safe is, in the later panel, half and half, rather than…
- 48:33Tad Eggleston: The monarchy, that's what it says.
- 48:35Marisol: A little pie slice of it.
- 48:40Josh Eiserike: It's kind of awesome for a robot to have a Fuck the Monarchy shirt.
- 48:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 48:44Matt: Yeah.
- 48:50Larry Woods: Yeah, that scene between Alana and the reindeer hoof guy, it was just like… Dude…
- 48:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 48:59Larry Woods: There's so many better ones.
- 49:02Matt: Yes.
- 49:03Larry Woods: Make sure that.
- 49:03Matt: Oh, not trust him.
- 49:05Tad Eggleston: My ears are hurting, but in a good way.
- 49:11Matt: Yeah, he's required a little thumbs up.
- 49:15Matt: It's because I went to concerts without ear protection in my youth.
- 49:20Larry Woods: I still do it!
- 49:22Matt: Yeah. Well, it came in handy. I have two daughters and a wife, so I have selective hearing.
- 49:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah, this was, like… I think the… oh, and… and also the… the… the album… the.
- 49:52Matt: Track 4?
- 49:53Matt: Isn't that, like, a stairway to Heaven reference or something?
- 49:56Tad Eggleston: Well, that, I think, is a stairway to Heaven reference, but this is the band that Isabelle was into.
- 50:03Marisol: Yeah.
- 50:04Marisol: That heart symbol is what was on her shirt.
- 50:07Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 50:08Marisol: I forget the name of them, though.
- 50:10Tad Eggleston: Give me a second.
- 50:11Marisol: What are they called?
- 50:12Tad Eggleston: Because they called them out here.
- 50:16Matt: The misguided, the mis…
- 50:18Tad Eggleston: The mistook, or no, the mistook is a…
- 50:20Marisol: Government Bank.
- 50:21Tad Eggleston: aunt.
- 50:21Matt: Oh, it's not Firbox?
- 50:25Tad Eggleston: No, no.
- 50:26Marisol: No, because Petrichor was also into them, because… When.
- 50:31Tad Eggleston: The Mistook is the band that the dance teacher had the t-shirt for.
- 50:36Matt: Correct.
- 50:42Marisol: this one.
- 50:47Josh Eiserike: Yeah, I do love that he's built out this whole, like, world of music in this universe. It's awesome.
- 50:54Matt: Yeah, music is universal.
- 50:56Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 51:00Tad Eggleston: Goose and the Wolf.
- 51:02Larry Woods: Hmm.
- 51:03Tad Eggleston: Pups.
- 51:05Marisol: I feel like it was a phoenix something.
- 51:08Matt: Did anyone else question why they need multiple trips back to the… abortion doctor?
- 51:18Josh Eiserike: I did, but I assume that's coming.
- 51:22Tad Eggleston: Well, at least one.
- 51:23Matt: The problem was…
- 51:23Tad Eggleston: To get her wings taken off.
- 51:25Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 51:39Tad Eggleston: Trying to find…
- 51:41Josh Eiserike: I got the sense that, like, Alana's just friends with her.
- 51:44Larry Woods: Yeah.
- 51:45Marisol: Yeah.
- 51:46Matt: Yeah, yeah, I got that.
- 51:52Tad Eggleston: Well, and I think… I think that, that they… that she was able to do business through her, too.
- 51:58Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 52:04Marisol: Yeah, and this isn't the last time they go see, end wife.
- 52:09Marisol: Cause in the… on the… I don't know what page number this is, but where…
- 52:14Marisol: Hazel and Squire are hanging out by Frendo. Her narration says, Our first stop was the clinic of a back alley doctor named Endwife, my second of many visits to her over the years.
- 52:33Matt: Yes.
- 52:36Marisol: So Endwife is around them for a while.
- 52:39Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 52:41Matt: How many abortions does she need?
- 52:45Tad Eggleston: I, I, again, I think… I… I think she… she became, like… their… their smuggler.
- 52:56Matt: Sure.
- 52:57Tad Eggleston: Bring in the various supplies they needed.
- 53:01Tad Eggleston: And in exchange, she had a place where she could get medical treatment.
- 53:06Tad Eggleston: And be safe.
- 53:11Larry Woods: Yeah, because I kind of took it as, like, a surgery at that point, not just with the abortion, but the wing removal.
- 53:20Marisol: That's great.
- 53:26Marisol: I'm sure you'd be very happy.
- 53:29Marisol: Endwife apparently has many talents.
- 53:34Matt: Well, I mean…
- 53:35Tad Eggleston: she's probably… A legit doctor, not just…
- 53:44Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 53:47Marisol: That would make sense.
- 53:48Tad Eggleston: I mean, it doesn't have to be that way. Particularly in places where abortion is illegal, there have been people who have learned and, like, that's the only part of medicine that they truly know and understand.
- 54:03Tad Eggleston: But… in general.
- 54:10Marisol: mother's kids.
- 54:15Tad Eggleston: pyrosis.
- 54:18Tad Eggleston: It's the name.
- 54:19Marisol: That's the name of the band.
- 54:21Tad Eggleston: Go find the Pyrosis album with an awesome wizard on the cover, and listen to track 4.
- 54:26Matt: Until you're… Yep.
- 54:27Tad Eggleston: You're… start smoking.
- 54:32Tad Eggleston: There we go.
- 54:36Larry Woods: That's so good.
- 54:37Matt: But he's… they're not wrong. Track 4 was the track when I was back, you know, back in the 80s.
- 54:46Tad Eggleston: I love the over-the-ear headphones, too.
- 54:57Tad Eggleston: I do kinda wish… like… The way he looks right here…
- 55:04Tad Eggleston: I could have seen the next panel being bam… bamboso… bambosa.
- 55:14Matt: Just call him Koala Dude.
- 55:16Tad Eggleston: I was about to. Bless you.
- 55:18Marisol: Bless you.
- 55:19Tad Eggleston: I could have seen him just taking reindeer head… skips.
- 55:24Tad Eggleston: head off.
- 55:25Matt: Yep.
- 55:27Tad Eggleston: Like, this look made me think that we were getting violence, not him backing down.
- 55:33Matt: Kind of would have been okay with it, too.
- 55:35Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 55:36Tad Eggleston: would've.
- 55:37Tad Eggleston: Meow.
- 55:39Marisol: I wanna know what that other… Name he called him.
- 55:43Marisol: is about… I wanna know the history of that name.
- 55:47Matt: Oh, I think we're gonna get it.
- 55:49Marisol: Is he a mercenary? Is he a serial killer?
- 55:55Larry Woods: Yeah, that panel reminded me, it gave me Marco vibes, which…
- 56:00Marisol: Oh, yeah.
- 56:01Larry Woods: did make me question, it's like, wait, did Alana kind of find her new Marco, in a way, right?
- 56:09Tad Eggleston: That guy who's turned over a new leaf, but absolutely has.
- 56:13Tad Eggleston: Badass.
- 56:16Tad Eggleston: motherfucker inside of him.
- 56:19Marisol: Yes, and it's still there. It hasn't gone away, clearly.
- 56:23Larry Woods: Yeah.
- 56:24Marisol: Just trying to be better.
- 56:27Tad Eggleston: Okay, I'm gonna, I'm gonna pull up my Esperanto.
- 56:35Tad Eggleston: And we'll find out what…
- 56:37Marisol: Toronto.
- 56:38Tad Eggleston: That's what the blue is.
- 56:41Marisol: Oh!
- 56:43Marisol: I never knew.
- 56:44Tad Eggleston: Bestisto?
- 56:53Tad Eggleston: Let's see…
- 56:56Marisol: I figured it had to be an actual language, just had no idea what that language could be.
- 57:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's Esperanto.
- 57:05Marisol: Oh.
- 57:06Tad Eggleston: Let's see…
- 57:08Marisol: The more you know.
- 57:16Tad Eggleston: Mwah.
- 57:20Marisol: Might have to go back one day and look at all the… the blue…
- 57:24Marisol: bubble of what they've been saying.
- 57:26Tad Eggleston: 54.
- 57:28Tad Eggleston: And that was enough… and that was enough to really, really discover But, for the most part.
- 57:37Tad Eggleston: You get it from context.
- 57:46Tad Eggleston: the butcher.
- 57:48Marisol: Oh…
- 57:50Josh Eiserike: I like that.
- 57:51Larry Woods: Yeah. The cleaver makes sense. Yeah.
- 57:56Josh Eiserike: That's smart.
- 58:00Larry Woods: Huh.
- 58:00Tad Eggleston: So… what do we think? Involved in the war, or the mob?
- 58:07Josh Eiserike: for…
- 58:07Tad Eggleston: Or a serial killer.
- 58:08Marisol: War. Had to be war.
- 58:11Larry Woods: I'm going…
- 58:13Tad Eggleston: I'm going tangential to war. I think…
- 58:18Tad Eggleston: it's a criminal thing. I think he's, like…
- 58:22Tad Eggleston: some major criminal organization's top hitman. I think he's like a Luka Brazi.
- 58:28Josh Eiserike: Hmm. I could see that.
- 58:31Tad Eggleston: That, that, that's gonna be my guess.
- 58:33Tad Eggleston: Is that… that he's, he's, like, that… you know…
- 58:41Tad Eggleston: You mess with the underworld, and somebody will send the butcher after you.
- 58:47Marisol: Mmm.
- 58:49Tad Eggleston: And nobody will identify the pieces.
- 58:57Tad Eggleston: So, yeah…
- 59:00Josh Eiserike: Copy that.
- 59:03Tad Eggleston: It's so hard seeing them grow up.
- 59:06Tad Eggleston: And there's so much in that hard age.
- 59:11Tad Eggleston: When they're starting to think and feel things, but they still don't know shit.
- 59:17Tad Eggleston: So they're full speed ahead into brick walls. That's… that's the… that's this age.
- 59:23Matt: It's the fool.
- 59:24Tad Eggleston: Speed ahead into brick walls age.
- 59:27Larry Woods: Man up.
- 59:34Tad Eggleston: So, yeah…
- 59:36Tad Eggleston: Well, I guess Belle isn't gonna get back from her jazz concert in time to join us. So, Matt, I know that she's, like, grown up, and, like, but I know that she's probably gonna come live at the house for a little bit before she moves to Chicago. No, she's going straight from Fredonia to Chicago?
- 59:56Matt: Bredonia's 2 hours closer to Chicago from my house, so I was like.
- 1:00:00Matt: Pay the extra month. We'll get to… pick up the…
- 1:00:04Matt: a U-Haul truck in Fredonia, and drive from Fredonia to Chicago.
- 1:00:10Tad Eggleston: Gotcha, gotcha.
- 1:00:11Matt: So, it just made more sense.
- 1:00:12Tad Eggleston: When is she… is it…
- 1:00:14Matt: Around July.
- 1:00:16Matt: The July 4th weekend is when she'll be there.
- 1:00:20Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 1:00:22Tad Eggleston: Well, if you need to, Edgar's been known to sleep in the comic shop, maybe he'll let you sleep there too?
- 1:00:29Matt: That's cool.
- 1:00:30Matt: I'm in, my wife probably won't… There's a comf…
- 1:00:34Tad Eggleston: couch.
- 1:00:35Matt: Very cool.
- 1:00:37Larry Woods: comfortable.
- 1:00:37Larry Woods: As someone that's also slept there, yep, very good.
- 1:00:40Matt: So…
- 1:00:42Tad Eggleston: Okay, if you've both slept there, you need to, like, put bunk beds in the back room.
- 1:00:50Larry Woods: No, we spoon.
- 1:00:52Larry Woods: Keeps each other warm.
- 1:00:54Tad Eggleston: On the couch.
- 1:00:56Larry Woods: Yep.
- 1:00:58Tad Eggleston: I mean… Ugh…
- 1:01:04Tad Eggleston: Oh, I haven't even mentioned, Hazel's Blue Hat is awesome.
- 1:01:10Tad Eggleston: Did I just say that?
- 1:01:11Matt: the topic.
- 1:01:12Marisol: Yeah, her little blue top hat.
- 1:01:14Tad Eggleston: Your top hat? Awesome.
- 1:01:18Matt: I just… I love how the cops immediately assume she's in cahoots with the suicide bomber.
- 1:01:25Matt: Oh, profile much?
- 1:01:27Matt: Yes.
- 1:01:28Marisol: Clearly, clearly, they're both… From wreath, so they have to be in coots together.
- 1:01:34Marisol: That's how that works, right?
- 1:01:36Matt: Of course! Totally.
- 1:01:38Tad Eggleston: Totally.
- 1:01:40Tad Eggleston: Totally.
- 1:01:41Tad Eggleston: Everybody knows that.
- 1:01:44Matt: Ords get along, they're a friend.
- 1:01:49Tad Eggleston: I mean, that's… that's like… every authority figure ever, like…
- 1:01:56Tad Eggleston: I don't care if you're looking at… at… at…
- 1:02:00Tad Eggleston: Gaza, or Lebanon now, or Vietnam, Indonesia…
- 1:02:09Tad Eggleston: you know, half of South America over the last 50 years, the… the white people who show up go, oh, you never know if the kid's gonna be a radicalized bomber. You can't… you can't treat them like they're…
- 1:02:29Tad Eggleston: possibly just… playing.
- 1:02:37Tad Eggleston: We have to be safe.
- 1:02:39Tad Eggleston: It was totally real to me.
- 1:02:43Tad Eggleston: Too real.
- 1:02:45Tad Eggleston: But… Any other thoughts? Or should we… what is the name… This is whack.
- 1:02:55Tad Eggleston: WACA Blast? Is that the name of the…
- 1:02:59Tad Eggleston: The… the sock puppet game? Snake game?
- 1:03:07Tad Eggleston: They don't…
- 1:03:08Josh Eiserike: I, I want one.
- 1:03:10Tad Eggleston: I do too.
- 1:03:12Marisol: It looks like so much fun!
- 1:03:15Matt: Yeah.
- 1:03:15Tad Eggleston: Turns out that it's not faux ice, it's actual water.
- 1:03:20Tad Eggleston: yeah.
- 1:03:22Tad Eggleston: apparently put.
- 1:03:23Marisol: Oh, that's even better.
- 1:03:24Tad Eggleston: Control… control the snakes.
- 1:03:27Josh Eiserike: I mean, listen, if…
- 1:03:28Tad Eggleston: laser-ish.
- 1:03:29Josh Eiserike: If we can figure out, like.
- 1:03:32Josh Eiserike: all this AI stuff that, you know, is making movies and all this stuff, certainly we can figure out, like, a water whack-a-blast game.
- 1:03:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:03:44Tad Eggleston: But am I reading that right? Is that… does that say WACA?
- 1:03:50Josh Eiserike: It's… whack.
- 1:03:52Josh Eiserike: something… blast. Maybe.
- 1:03:57Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'm trying to figure out, like…
- 1:04:02Marisol: Wacko Blast?
- 1:04:04Tad Eggleston: Well, unless it's man…
- 1:04:09Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's this thing in the middle that makes it hard.
- 1:04:13Tad Eggleston: Because…
- 1:04:13Marisol: Wow.
- 1:04:14Tad Eggleston: asked… like, the A is upside down, and the S is a little weird.
- 1:04:20Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:04:22Marisol: Yes, it's like it's mirrored.
- 1:04:23Tad Eggleston: This sideways… this… this… this sideways blocky 8…
- 1:04:30Tad Eggleston: right next to what could be a W, upside-down A, C, or it could be an upside-down M, upside-down A, sidewards N.
- 1:04:44Tad Eggleston: And, and all we actually know about it… Who's…
- 1:04:48Josh Eiserike: What was the game they played in, Fantastic Mr. Fox Whackbat?
- 1:04:52Josh Eiserike: Do you guys remember that?
- 1:04:55Tad Eggleston: Not really.
- 1:04:56Josh Eiserike: Never mind.
- 1:04:57Marisol: No.
- 1:04:58Josh Eiserike: It was very silly.
- 1:05:01Larry Woods: That just makes me think it's like a…
- 1:05:04Larry Woods: Either wack and… whack and Blast, like, almost like an AND symbol… symbol.
- 1:05:08Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it could be, it could be Whack and Blast.
- 1:05:11Josh Eiserike: Whack and blast.
- 1:05:15Tad Eggleston: That actually makes sense.
- 1:05:17Tad Eggleston: Because they can both…
- 1:05:20Tad Eggleston: I mean, they have the lasers that they shoot out of their mouths, but they can also get wrapped up in each other.
- 1:05:29Tad Eggleston: So, I think that's what I'm going with, whack and blast. I want a whack and blast table.
- 1:05:34Matt: Yeah, that… when you say that, if you don't know the context, it sounds really bad, just so you know.
- 1:05:40Tad Eggleston: Which also makes it that much more likely, Matt.
- 1:05:43Matt: Exactly. I want to get a shirt t-shirt that says Wack and Blast.
- 1:05:51Marisol: That's gonna go well.
- 1:05:54Tad Eggleston: Now these, these, these, splash, white splashes popping up, like…
- 1:06:03Matt: You gotta…
- 1:06:03Tad Eggleston: Whole different.
- 1:06:04Matt: It looked like fireworks. Yeah.
- 1:06:07Tad Eggleston: Nope. I mean, look at this!
- 1:06:09Matt: Oyvee, that's awful.
- 1:06:11Tad Eggleston: I can't unsee that, Matt! How dare you?
- 1:06:20Marisol: You ruined it.
- 1:06:26Marisol: Oh, man.
- 1:06:29Larry Woods: Well, at least we ended on a high note.
- 1:06:33Matt: I feel like it should be hashtag Whack and Blast.
- 1:06:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I gotta work in the morning, I… I need to watch,
- 1:06:43Tad Eggleston: The, the, the first episode or more of…
- 1:06:48Tad Eggleston: of Devil and Silver before we go to sleep.
- 1:06:51Tad Eggleston: So, so, like, unless somebody else has some…
- 1:06:55Tad Eggleston: thread that they desperately want to go on, I'm gonna say.
- 1:06:59Josh Eiserike: I have one thing, I'm gonna, I'm gonna keep you up for another minute.
- 1:07:03Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 1:07:03Marisol: Something.
- 1:07:04Josh Eiserike: Hazel says… Right, right before the Wack and Blast game.
- 1:07:09Josh Eiserike: It wasn't the music my mother cared about, it was the sound only a parent would hear. I wouldn't know.
- 1:07:16Josh Eiserike: I'm on the record of predicting the ending. Hazel becomes a mom. I'm still with that prediction, even though this panel completely negates that.
- 1:07:24Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:07:25Josh Eiserike: That is all.
- 1:07:27Tad Eggleston: Ehhh.
- 1:07:30Marisol: We'll have to see if that prediction comes true.
- 1:07:32Matt: Thank you for your attention to this matter.
- 1:07:34Josh Eiserike: That is all.
- 1:07:34Tad Eggleston: I mean, it all depends on, like, is this the diary she's writing as she goes along?
- 1:07:39Matt: Right, exactly.
- 1:07:42Josh Eiserike: We'll find out!
- 1:07:47Matt: Alright, we'll continue after the next page.
