Latest / Amplify Your Marketing Message with Christine Campbell Rapin / 167 - Turn Networking Into Sales Success
Transcript
- 0:02Recently I saw a lightning rod on LinkedIn.
- 0:06A comment from a friend of mine that said networking is broken.
- 0:12It's become a social club where you think showing up gives you a
- 0:15Gold Star, when in fact it's a room full of fellow
- 0:20procrastinators who are afraid to sell, and they think that by
- 0:26showing up, they'll sell to somebody in that room.
- 0:31You feel cringing right now in your gut and you're like ohe
- 0:35Christine's coming in half and hard today, stay with me.
- 0:39I want you to win when you're networking, but too many people
- 0:44I know are in endless meetings that are going nowhere.
- 0:49So today on Amplifier Marketing message, I want to talk about
- 0:52this. I want to talk about the problem
- 0:55with networking. And I want to invite you to
- 0:58audit the rooms you're in, to audit how you're approaching it,
- 1:03and to check are you busy or are you productive?
- 1:08Because networking can be one of the smartest ways to find access
- 1:12to new collaborations that bring you into visibility of new
- 1:17prospects. And never mistake.
- 1:19That's the goal of collaboration.
- 1:21That's the goal of networking. This is an income producing
- 1:26activity. If it is not generating leads,
- 1:30what you're doing is broken, and broken leads to burnout, and
- 1:38it's avoidable. So get out your pens papers,
- 1:43make sure you record, download and save this episode and share
- 1:47it to somebody you know. Because too many networking
- 1:51groups are simple playgrounds of procrastination.
- 1:57You're surrounded by rooms of business owners who are broke,
- 2:01who aren't seeing significant client volumes, and you're in
- 2:07rooms of people who fail to make decisions.
- 2:12And that's dangerous. Every year at this time of year,
- 2:17I audit the rooms I'm in and I say am I generating activity
- 2:24that is income producing? Am I seeing consistent lead flow
- 2:31from that activity? Am I committed to contributing
- 2:36to the community as a whole? And am I visible in all the ways
- 2:42I can be for the money I'm spending to be in that space?
- 2:48And I just want watched you go wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 2:51What? I'm like, I do not spend time in
- 2:54free networking spaces. I don't need to go into rooms
- 2:59where broke. People are only looking for a
- 3:01free option. My services are not a free
- 3:04option. Podcast is a free option.
- 3:06Events may or may not be a free option, but my services are not
- 3:10free. And so I go into rooms where
- 3:13people who are already buyers, people who buy into paid
- 3:17networking spaces go into paid referral communities.
- 3:20And that is a measure that has proven solid gold.
- 3:26And if I'm in the wrong rooms, I exit.
- 3:32And so should you, because too many business owners that I have
- 3:37encountered, almost every client who's come and joined our
- 3:40business services this calendar year have said this in a
- 3:44paraphrased way to me. I'm in a lot of networking, I'm
- 3:48having lots of 1 to ones, I'm not seeing any sales activity
- 3:53and I feel a question deep in my gut.
- 3:59Is it worth it? The results indicate no.
- 4:06It saddens me because they're in rooms of broke entrepreneurs who
- 4:12are showing up thinking showing up gives them a Gold Star.
- 4:16They show up with the intent to sell to others in the community,
- 4:19and they are transactional in their mindset and in the
- 4:25experience. And when I hear that, you know
- 4:28what I think? I think that you've been sold a
- 4:33social club where the only money moving hands is yours to the
- 4:38network owner, and if that's the only money that's moving hands,
- 4:43exit fast. I belong to paid networking
- 4:47communities where we pay referrals to each other, so
- 4:50there's a clear goal. The revenue shared from deals
- 4:54one far outstrips my dues to being a member.
- 5:01Did you hear me say that that's the kind of room you want to be
- 5:04in? So if you're not in one of those
- 5:05rooms, come find me and ask me to introduce you to the rooms I
- 5:09play in. If I think you're a fit, I'll
- 5:11refer you. And you can be in spaces that
- 5:14win because you need to be in a room of winners, not in a room
- 5:17of people who are procrastinating.
- 5:19Because if you think that simply showing up and going through the
- 5:23motions is the same as creating sales success, let's be clear.
- 5:31One is busy, 1 is revenue generating.
- 5:35So in your work day you need to be focused on revenue generating
- 5:40activities. So if you're in networking rooms
- 5:43where you are invited to add value but no one asked for that
- 5:48value, where you spend hours in pods trying to socially gamify
- 5:55your social platform, adding comments that go nowhere.
- 6:00Or you're building relationships with people who are broken their
- 6:03mentality, looking for the freebie path, and are not
- 6:06investing and not selling successfully.
- 6:11You're in the wrong room, and that's not the only room that's
- 6:15out there. Even if it might be what you are
- 6:17experiencing today, I want you to get clear your goal is about
- 6:27productivity. If I'm in that room it has to be
- 6:31a good return on time and money and if it's not, prune, exit and
- 6:39re invest in another space because number one, you've got
- 6:44to stop hiding. Showing up is not the same as
- 6:48creating success. I want you to invest in real
- 6:54relationships, and you never know how one conversation could
- 6:58change everything. But if you don't have
- 7:03intentionality about building that relationship and ensuring
- 7:07that you're aligned in your values, you're moving in the
- 7:09same direction, and you have faith, trust to advocate for
- 7:14each other, it's a lot of noise. A busy is not the same as
- 7:19success and busy that doesn't go success leads to broke and
- 7:26overwhelm. I want you to trail and track
- 7:32for the next 30 days. How many hours do you spend in
- 7:35networking rooms? How many identified leads did
- 7:41you create? Sometimes those leads are
- 7:44created through collaborative partners.
- 7:46But collaborations are about one thing, sharing leads together.
- 7:51If collaboration is not leading to a lead and you aren't
- 7:55tracking leads effectively and it's not above 0, boy, you're
- 8:00just stuck in busy work, my friend.
- 8:03So I want you to track how many rooms did I go into, How many
- 8:06calls did I spend? How many hours have I invested?
- 8:08How many leads have I created? And here's an important piece,
- 8:12my friends. What did you do with the leads?
- 8:16Did you build the relationships with them?
- 8:17Did you engage directly? Did you call, engage, talk to
- 8:22them? Because you must actually do the
- 8:24sales work. I don't care how you do the
- 8:27sales work, whether you want to do it in person, you want to do
- 8:30it screen to screen, you want to use it a tech platform with that
- 8:33e-mail, DM's or other ways, video and animations, all kinds
- 8:37of choices. But you can't skip the step.
- 8:41And I want you to track work that matters because when people
- 8:50do come to me and they do saying I invest, Christine, I invest.
- 8:54I know I have to find people. I know I've been listening to
- 8:57you for years. I listened to your podcast.
- 8:59I've been in lots of your events and you always say you need to
- 9:01find strangers. Your business will be built on
- 9:03strangers. And so to get in front of
- 9:05strangers, the effective way to do this is networking.
- 9:08It's one option and it should be an effective one if done well.
- 9:13So you're like, I've met all these networking meetings and
- 9:15I've joined all these communities and I spend 10 hours
- 9:18a week on networking activity. And I say, what's the result?
- 9:22And they go back to me, Christine, I spend 10 hours a
- 9:25week in networking activity. And I'm like, is that the only
- 9:28result that you're seeing that you are in spaces?
- 9:35Are you effective in those spaces?
- 9:39I'm going to say that the cookie starts to crumble.
- 9:43Well, I've had all these one to 1, so I said.
- 9:45And what happened in the one to ones?
- 9:46Well, we just told each other about our business.
- 9:49I said, and they say Christine, I just told him about my
- 9:53business and they told me about theirs.
- 9:54And I said, well, what did you take as your next step?
- 9:59I told them about my business, my friends.
- 10:04It's a good start that's not effective, so I want to build on
- 10:08that. When you are in an effective one
- 10:11to one, this is what it should look like.
- 10:14You are clear on the time committed for the call.
- 10:18You go in and you are sharing equally about your business.
- 10:21But here's how you share about your business.
- 10:23I stand for this result. It's a statement, 10 words or
- 10:28less. People who desire that result
- 10:32are looking for the following or encountering the following or
- 10:38can be observed doing the following.
- 10:40You need to give situational context so somebody could spot
- 10:43the pattern of somebody who seeks the result you deliver.
- 10:48And you say if that person experiences that, I want you to
- 10:51engage in introduction and you can think about how you want to
- 10:55be introduced or where you want to be introduced or the platform
- 10:58that you're most visible on and you want the introduction to be
- 11:02made, that I observed this problem and you seek that
- 11:06result. I know a great person who can
- 11:09help you. Would you like me to make the
- 11:11introduction and you make it and in that meeting, you should not
- 11:18ever have a one to one that doesn't have an ROI beyond a
- 11:23shared information because if some of my friends, you're back
- 11:26being a likable expert, You're not positioning yourself as a
- 11:29must hire. You're not asking for an
- 11:32introduction and you're not going to get a lead.
- 11:34So once you've shared, you say, who do you know that you've met
- 11:38in the last 10 days, this week and the week prior or even in
- 11:43the last 30 days that you could observe that pattern?
- 11:47And you wait. And if you need prompts, you say
- 11:50get out your social media. Who have you been talking to on
- 11:52LinkedIn? Who have you been talking to on
- 11:54Instagram? Who have you been talking on in
- 11:56your emails? There are good a person.
- 11:59Let's make that introduction now.
- 12:03Get the work done in the meeting.
- 12:06And here's what's so important if you want to build your
- 12:08reputation and be a cut above everybody after they've made the
- 12:12introduction that let them know how it goes.
- 12:15Let them know that you met, that they deferred, that they
- 12:18cancelled, that they know showed.
- 12:20Let them know that you moved them to an offer and this was
- 12:23what the offer is. And here's how the offer
- 12:25reinforces the result they seek and that it was a good
- 12:28introduction. And I think this is not
- 12:31required, but we do it so you can expect it from us.
- 12:36We pay out a referral Commission.
- 12:39And that's why if you go to our website,
- 12:41christinecampbellwrapping.com, you'll see a button right on the
- 12:43top. We love referrals.
- 12:45You can refer somebody to us directly.
- 12:47There we will capture and serve and support and reward.
- 12:54I can feel you. Your mind's going, Christine.
- 13:01I think I am in a procrastination of playground.
- 13:06I think I'm surrounded by entrepreneurs afraid to sell.
- 13:10I think even rooms are the only person being sold or money
- 13:13moving hands is me paying the fee to be there.
- 13:17I can see you going, Oh my God, I'm spending so much time but I
- 13:20never track the ROI. No more, my friends.
- 13:27This kind of thinking, this kind of awareness, this kind of
- 13:33tracking and dashboards is essential if you want your
- 13:39business to reward you like a business, you must treat it like
- 13:43a business and you must get very clear on the hours you spend
- 13:47that are income producing activities.
- 13:49And you must go after the lead, serve the lead, make the offer
- 13:56and get to a decision. No if, ands or buts.
- 14:00And if all of that makes you go, I totally get it.
- 14:05How do I do it? Well, we help you people do that
- 14:09every day. My invitation would be come talk
- 14:13to us because we help you structure this and as a result
- 14:19when we do, here's what kind of happens.
- 14:21I want to just share some some Ahas from my clients recently
- 14:24because I said every single one of them in the last year has
- 14:26come to me saying I'm networking, I'm in social clubs.
- 14:29I am not in rooms of movers, I'm not in rooms of buyers.
- 14:32I'm not doing this particularly well and help because I know it
- 14:36could work, because I watch it work in your business, because
- 14:39for us, referrals are the second most important lead generation
- 14:43source we have. Here's what happens.
- 14:48People that have been in business 8 years have said to me
- 14:50I was never clear on the distinction between what a
- 14:55contact is, what a lead is, and what a referral or collaborative
- 14:59partner is. I'm not clear when I was
- 15:03messaging how to position myself because I kept talking about me,
- 15:07my name and my company instead of the result.
- 15:10I stand for the when we get clients and the system that we
- 15:14do to create it. Repeatedly I watched people say
- 15:20I'm booking more sales calls. I'm watching people be aware
- 15:25that they're intentionally slowing things down by going
- 15:28meeting to meeting to meeting to meeting to meeting instead of
- 15:31fewer meetings. More productive.
- 15:33Track the ROI and tweak and adjust your strategy when that
- 15:38happens. I say this to my clients all the
- 15:40time. I don't need you to necessarily
- 15:42commit more hours, although if you're not doing any hours,
- 15:45absolutely you can't build from zero.
- 15:48I want you to be more effective in the hours you're working.
- 15:52And this is something that we are human around.
- 15:55So we might have good seasons where we're highly productive,
- 15:58highly intentional, highly aware of our tracking and really in
- 16:02our flow, our A game all around. And it feels like we're magnetic
- 16:07and we're winning, but we also sometimes take our eye off the
- 16:12ball. Life.
- 16:13Life we get in our own way. We fall back into patterns.
- 16:20It's normal. It happens to me all the time
- 16:24and it happens to my clients all the time.
- 16:28What we build is an awareness to make the gaps as short as we
- 16:32can. We take horse correction
- 16:34decisively, but this is a calling card.
- 16:41I want you to save the episode. I want you to share with
- 16:43somebody you know because I watch a lot of networking rooms
- 16:47in my day. I've been in a lot.
- 16:51Most are social clubs. Most are filled with broadcast
- 16:55entrepreneurs who are afraid to sell, who think going in,
- 16:58sitting in the back row and talking for two minutes and 60
- 17:00is going to move the needle in their business.
- 17:05Before I poop with that too far, will it move the needle?
- 17:10Yes. But at the speed at which you're
- 17:12traveling, it will take you 800 years to build your client base,
- 17:15and you don't have that year. You don't have 800 years, even
- 17:19with the longevity stuff that's making us all look great for
- 17:22longer, you need to get there faster.
- 17:25So my ask to you today is to think prune, commit to
- 17:33productive income producing activities and if you feel lost,
- 17:39you feel overwhelmed, you think I just need a how to solve this,
- 17:46you come talk to me. Christine Campbell Rappin, you
- 17:51know somebody who should be referred into our business.
- 17:53Click that link on our home page.
- 17:55You want to be curious about how we support?
- 17:58Get the support, Stop wasting time, stop being ineffective.
- 18:08Your next client is out there, of that I am absolutely certain.
- 18:13Let's get them served. I'll see you on our next
- 18:17episode.
