- 0:23My name's Ryan, I sing him one Step Closer. Yeah, we got
- 0:27a new record coming now called All You Embrace on May seventeenth. I'm super
- 0:30stoked about it. Yeah, the Arrian thanks for joining us today. Brother,
- 0:35Yeah, of course, thanks for having me. I'm super stoked to
- 0:37do this, honestly by pleasure bros. As you said, one Step Closer,
- 0:41unleash your latest album or You Embrace on May the seven eighth. But
- 0:44it's not far off now, might how you feeling any excited? Nervous,
- 0:47couldn't give a shit you feel I'm honestly nervous and super excited as well,
- 0:53just because you know, this is a this is kind of like a big
- 0:56deal record for us. I feel like the second LP is always a little
- 0:59scary, you know, and I feel like we've been trying to do our
- 1:03best to just like keep our nerves and just keep everything, keep everything pushing.
- 1:07You know. We're we're super excited to finally put it out right.
- 1:10So can you tell us more about All Your Embrace from a musical point of
- 1:12view and what you were going forward with it? Yeah? Sure, I
- 1:15mean pretty much, we were just trying to expand our sound from what it
- 1:19already has been. We were trying to be a little bit more melodic and
- 1:23just kind of push you know, at least the stinging aspects of the band
- 1:27even more, and we've I feel like we've always been more of a melodic
- 1:32band and more kind of like, I don't know, we're a lot of
- 1:36hardcore band, you know what I mean. So it's always been sick to
- 1:38just like kind of push that even more on every release that we've done.
- 1:42And for this one, I think we were really just trying to be limitless
- 1:47and just not hold ourselves back. Very cool, and you released the singles
- 1:51orange Leaf, Leap EA's, and Grants to Spare so far mate, so
- 1:55all would you say they're a good sonic representation of what do expect from the
- 1:57album? Yeah, feel like it's a little bit of everything. Honestly,
- 2:01We've put out like I think we've done like you know, Leap Ears,
- 2:06which is a faster song, and then we've done Giants of Spare, which
- 2:09is a little bit of a slower song, and then we did orange Leaf
- 2:13now, which is a little bit more of just like kind of just a
- 2:15rocker, you know what I mean. It's like a little bit of everything.
- 2:20And uh, I think sonically it gives a good representation of like the
- 2:24flow of the record because we got a little bit of everything throughout the whole
- 2:28record. We have some slow songs, we have some fast ones, and
- 2:30uh, you know, we kind of did that intentionally just to like give
- 2:35a good sonic listening experience through the record, you know. Yeah, And
- 2:38in the modern age of music, Mate Loved, there's so many things changing,
- 2:42like with the song with with everything from die pretty much. But in
- 2:46the modern age, like, is there a set criteria when it comes to
- 2:47looking at singles that your release, Like do you pick your three best ones?
- 2:51Do you pick the ones that are gonna cover everything? Like is it
- 2:53throw dot or dopboard and see what comes out? I think sometimes it's it's
- 2:59not only the ones that, like, you know, we think that will
- 3:02do well. But I think a lot of it comes down to us just
- 3:06being confident within within a certain you know, group of songs or something like
- 3:09that, because you know, our management and like record label, we're kind
- 3:14of pushing for some songs that I really didn't even think that we were like
- 3:17considering as singles, you know what I mean, Like we all kind of
- 3:21came to the conclusion that Leap Years would be a good song just because we
- 3:23put it out on the Leap Day and it kind of just like made sense
- 3:29for that time, and it was a song that wasn't too sonically different.
- 3:32But then we really wanted Giants Spare as a single just because we felt so
- 3:37connected to that song, and uh, they were kind of like, oh,
- 3:42like you know, we're kind of down with whatever you want to do,
- 3:44but we were kind of thinking a different song, and we pushed for
- 3:46Giants and I'm really happy that we did, because I feel like that song
- 3:51really resonated with a lot of people. And yeah, so it's a little
- 3:54bit of everything. You know, you got to take into consideration, like
- 3:57what songs you think will do well, but also you got you kind of
- 4:00got to follow your gut a little bit on like, you know, if
- 4:02something immediately clicks in your head, like when you're recording and you're like,
- 4:05Yo, this needs to be a single, that's what you got to do.
- 4:08You know. Yeah, fair cool. Now we governed that a little
- 4:11bit deeper, Brian Like. The press release says that the single offer a
- 4:14glimpse of the band's evolution. On All You Embrace Would you agree with that?
- 4:17Would you agree that they're showing bright specifically? Yeah, I definitely agree.
- 4:24I feel like we uh, I feel like this record is a big
- 4:28sonic leap for us in a way, but also like is has a lot
- 4:32of familiar familiar I can't even isn't it? Yeah, the mill familiarities,
- 4:41you know what I'm saying. Familiarity. Yeah, that's what I'm trying to
- 4:43say. Yeah, it has a lot. It has a lot of that
- 4:46for uh, from like the old stuff, you know. So like I
- 4:49feel like for us, you know, I think that kind of sums it
- 4:53up well. Where we really did try to make sure that, like the
- 4:59songs that we put out weren't too much of a leap until we kind of
- 5:02dove into it a little bit more, especially with the first track, because
- 5:05like we didn't want to scare people away too soon, you know, another
- 5:11be counterproductive, wouldn't it. Yeah? Exactly. You gotta you gotta bring
- 5:15people in, you gotta get people stoked, you know. So now I'd
- 5:18not to say it's nice song on the album called or You and Brycebray,
- 5:21which suggests to me that the title's going to be great at significant Yeah,
- 5:27I mean this, This whole record is really like based around like kind of
- 5:31like life change and just change in general within the band and and different things.
- 5:35And uh, I feel like we kind of were just throwing so many
- 5:41different names out there, like for the record, just because we don't like
- 5:45to name records off of just song titles because it feels a little just feels
- 5:49a little basic to me, you know, and there's no dish to anyone
- 5:53that does that. Bloody lazy, that's what it is. Yeah, it
- 5:57feels a little lazy sometimes, right, So we wanted to up with something
- 6:00that really like kind of summed up the record in a hole. And we're
- 6:03kind of, like I said, throwing different names out there. And then
- 6:08I said, all you embraced just because it felt like, you know,
- 6:11we kind of have to either embrace these changes that are happening or I feel
- 6:15like you kind of kind of can send you down a spiral sometimes, you
- 6:17know, and like leaves your wondering like what the hell are you doing with
- 6:20your life? You know what I mean. So we kind of summed it
- 6:27up, and I feel I feel like it felt it felt like it connected
- 6:29with the record really well and felt like, you know, it really just
- 6:32brought the whole atmosphere of the record into like three words. And yeah,
- 6:38I'm super excited that we ended up going with that for the for the song
- 6:41or for the album title. Wait now I reread it quite what you said.
- 6:46I wanted us to be one hundred percent of ourselves, would be as
- 6:47authentic to our band as we could possibly be on the album. Could you
- 6:51elaborate on that? Yeah, of course, I mean that that's just like,
- 6:57that's just me at this point in my life, just being as honest
- 7:00and true to like what we are as people and or who we are as
- 7:04people, I mean, and what we are as a band. You know,
- 7:08this band is, like I said, always been way more melodic.
- 7:11And we're not a mosh band. We're not like you know, we're not
- 7:15like people getting getting hurt to our music kind of band. We are just
- 7:19a band that people, you know, want to sing along to and stage
- 7:23dive and do that kind of thing. And I think we fully embrace like
- 7:26what that is. And we just didn't hold ourselves back with that. And
- 7:30I feel like for a long time I felt like I kind of had to
- 7:34hold back, like at least like I was like afraid of singing more and
- 7:39yelling less. And I think we're kind of at the point in our lives
- 7:43and like where we are with this band where like we've been doing this band
- 7:47for you know, seven years now, and we want to do what we've
- 7:51always intended on doing, and that's kind of making music like this record.
- 7:57Yeah, that's speaking of the stalls of music bright like you can buy quite
- 8:01a few different genres to come up with the your own unique and fresh sound.
- 8:03But was it was it a plan coming together with musical stars when he
- 8:07started or did you just sort of trawl an error and just see what worked
- 8:09and what didn't. It feels like to me like when we were when we
- 8:15were in this writing process, it felt very natural. It felt like this
- 8:18is what the next thing that we would that we would write would be.
- 8:22So as we were like kind of demoing ideas and songs and different things like
- 8:26this, like the songs were just kind of pouring out of us at that
- 8:30point of just like you know, like sitting there writing writing the songs and
- 8:37uh, demoing out the guitar, is like this is just what was coming
- 8:41out. That was just what was coming out of us, and we kind
- 8:43of just kept rolling with it, and then once we had a big batch
- 8:46of songs where like, let's just dial in this exact vibe that we have
- 8:50right now and pick the songs that make sense and create an atmosphere for the
- 8:54record, and uh yeah, we ended up writing like over twenty songs and
- 8:58then narrowed it down to the eleven that are on the record. Cool.
- 9:01Now, I'm not just looking through a discography that you guys released five EPs
- 9:05between twenty sixteen and twenty twenty, but didn't put a debut album this place,
- 9:11you know, until twenty twenty one. So was there a reason for
- 9:15focusing on EPs so much to start off with? I honestly think it was
- 9:20just because we were so young and we really didn't know what we were doing,
- 9:22honestly, Like, like the band started when I was like seventeen years
- 9:26old, you know, and we didn't really know how to write music.
- 9:31Like we were just kind of like trying our best to be a hardcore band
- 9:35and like write like what we thought was like, you know, melodic hardcore,
- 9:39but it really wasn't. It was just kind of just like like eighties
- 9:43nineties sounding hardcore kind of stuff. And we finally kind of like found our
- 9:48footing in twenty nineteen when we released From Me Tou, which was the EP
- 9:54that came out on Triple B Records, and that one kind of like I
- 9:58don't know, that was kind of our first stepping stone as a band where
- 10:01we were like, Okay, we wrote something that like we're actually stoked on
- 10:05and feels like more of what we've been trying to do, you know.
- 10:11And then after that we were like, Okay, I think it's time that
- 10:13we finally just do an LP. Yeah. Cool. So look at Breckbrian,
- 10:20how would you say that your music's changed you Brian from the OSC demo
- 10:24in twenty sixteen to ay you embrace. Oh, I mean it's it's grown
- 10:30tenfolded. It honestly compared to the demo, it doesn't even sound like the
- 10:33same band, I think, which is kind of crazy, you know,
- 10:37to think about that. But I mean, like I said, we were
- 10:39just were we were literal kids, like in high school, just trying to
- 10:43make a band and trying to have fun. Like we started our first band,
- 10:48a different band when I was like fifteen, and we were like just
- 10:54trying to like I said, just trying to have fun and be involved in
- 10:56our scene and play some shows and then and so Closer started and I was
- 11:01like, yeah, I think I could be a singer. Why not,
- 11:03you know what I mean? And then like yeah, you know, and
- 11:05then just kind of went from there with it, and uh yeah, it's
- 11:09it's it's honestly amazing to look back and see where we started to where we
- 11:13are now, because I think us as people and like us as musicians have
- 11:18just grown so much and I'm really proud of us. Honestly, Hey,
- 11:22good for you, brother. Now what's next for One Step Close? Tonight
- 11:26on the album comes out, I can imagine they're gonna have you busy as
- 11:28fuck for a few months. Oh yeah, very very busy. Yeah,
- 11:31we uh were. We just announced our record relief show today. Actually we're
- 11:37gonna do a home show for the first time in a long time. And
- 11:41then we have a tour announced that's coming out on Monday for a summer tour
- 11:46that we're doing in the States. But before that, we're going to Europe
- 11:50for three weeks. And then uh, we have a fall tour that's being
- 11:54planned, and then we got some more overseas stuff and then we might come
- 12:01back to Australia. Positively, like there's there's just so much stuff you know,
- 12:05in the air right now. But now that the record's almost out,
- 12:09it's like, this is the exciting time we get to light tour and play
- 12:13on on the new songs and finally, like you know, create like a
- 12:16fun new setlist to play for people. You up, brother, Well,
- 12:18thanks very much for your time that I write. It's made a pleasure spaking
- 12:22with you. The album All You Embrace is out in by seven eighth and
- 12:24I had to listen to it while I was writing the Questions out this morning.
- 12:26Bro. It's a very very well not album. I have had a
- 12:28little a little sort of have some flies in it, but I've rolled it.
- 12:31It's just it's us well done. Thank you. Yeah. Yeah,
- 12:35we tried. We really tried to make it have like a you know,
- 12:39there's like leaps and values in it in it and have some slow stuff,
- 12:43half fast and you know, a little bit of everything. So it's just
- 12:45like a more fun listening experience for people. You know, hopefully it keeps
- 12:48people engaged a whole time. I got our very short attention span, brother,
- 12:52and I kept it going to a little day to the end. So
- 12:54you've done something right awesome, Yeah, thank you man, I appreciate that.
- 12:58All right? Or brother, hopefully when you come back to a radio
- 13:01will catch up and via Yeah, let's do it. I'm down play like
