- 0:00Speaker 1: Per It's media podcast.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia, the only game show where
- 0:13Speaker 2: conservation always wins. I am not your host, Spencer new Hearth. Instead,
- 0:18Speaker 2: I'm your guest host, Randall Williams, Doctor Randall Williams. Since today,
- 0:21Speaker 2: we're joined by Giannis cal Spencer, Corey Reva, Tresa Logan
- 0:27Speaker 2: and Alex Zimmer. Now Alec, this is your first time
- 0:31Speaker 2: playing trivia on the podcast. Why don't you tell folks
- 0:33Speaker 2: what you do here at Meat Eater.
- 0:35Speaker 3: I am the store manager at the flagship Medater store
- 0:38Speaker 3: here in downtown Bozeman. We just opened the store here
- 0:42Speaker 3: in April and we have kick started it and got
- 0:47Speaker 3: it up and going, and we've been having a good
- 0:50Speaker 3: show of customers coming out and seeing the store. So
- 0:53Speaker 3: if you're in town, come by and check us out.
- 0:55Speaker 3: We have a lot of the new gear and some
- 0:58Speaker 3: sweet swag that you can pick up been where and
- 1:01Speaker 3: show your.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Support for us.
- 1:02Speaker 5: Anything unique just to the store.
- 1:05Speaker 3: We have this certain bison skull that as a hole
- 1:08Speaker 3: in it. So if you want to get your picture
- 1:11Speaker 3: on some of our social content or to send in
- 1:14Speaker 3: a picture, come in and stick your finger in the
- 1:16Speaker 3: bison and you can take a picture.
- 1:18Speaker 5: I was hoping you're going to say, like, yeah, we
- 1:20Speaker 5: have these hats that are only available, and I'm going to.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Warn our audience that you revealed to us only moments
- 1:26Speaker 2: before that the bison skull has only been cleaned once
- 1:29Speaker 2: since people started disinfected.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, so you might want to wash your
- 1:34Speaker 3: hands out of that or Carrie hand sanitizers.
- 1:37Speaker 2: But depending on how this goes today for you, folks
- 1:40Speaker 2: can stop in and either congratulate you or offer some
- 1:43Speaker 2: constructive feedback.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Absolutely, I'm looking for it.
- 1:46Speaker 6: Opening night, when I was at the store, there was
- 1:48Speaker 6: a line it's pretty long, like around the block, and
- 1:50Speaker 6: I was as I was crossing the street, I was
- 1:52Speaker 6: standing next to another couple and the guy saw the
- 1:55Speaker 6: name and he said to his I was like, damn,
- 1:57Speaker 6: that must be a good steakhouse. So how often people
- 2:00Speaker 6: coming in and like have no idea what meat eater is.
- 2:03Speaker 3: It's actually quite a few people every day that come
- 2:05Speaker 3: in and think we are a restaurant or like a
- 2:08Speaker 3: meat store that think we sell meat. And it probably
- 2:11Speaker 3: is at least two to three people every day that
- 2:14Speaker 3: come in and think it's a beat store.
- 2:16Speaker 5: We should sell some meat.
- 2:17Speaker 2: We really should have thought about that before we name
- 2:19Speaker 2: the company were.
- 2:22Speaker 6: Down there, I thought when they sell earthworms, Yeah.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I got bait.
- 2:27Speaker 5: I do like the There should be kind of something
- 2:29Speaker 5: for you got your freeze dried food. You got a
- 2:33Speaker 5: little bit of stuff. So if you want to find
- 2:36Speaker 5: honey swag gettingers, yeah yeah, there's a little bit of food,
- 2:40Speaker 5: a lot of things you can walk out with absolutely.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Now, as you know, this is a ten round quiz
- 2:45Speaker 2: show with questions from meat eaters for verticals which are hunting, fishing,
- 2:49Speaker 2: conservation and cooking, and there is a prize. Meat eater
- 2:53Speaker 2: will donate five hundred dollars to the conservation organization of
- 2:57Speaker 2: the winners choosing. Now for the stat of the week
- 3:00Speaker 2: this week, we're looking at player performance from the last
- 3:02Speaker 2: time I hosted an episode, which as we know, was
- 3:05Speaker 2: back in November of twenty twenty three. The winner that
- 3:08Speaker 2: day was a man who shall not be named since
- 3:11Speaker 2: I am sitting in the host seat today, and that
- 3:13Speaker 2: individual had seven correct answers. The average scorer was a
- 3:16Speaker 2: three point seventy five, the low score was one, and
- 3:20Speaker 2: our guest pro golfer Brian the Butcher Harmon got four
- 3:23Speaker 2: correct answers. That episode had won one hundred percenter and
- 3:27Speaker 2: one zero percenter, and since we don't have any housekeeping today,
- 3:31Speaker 2: we will revisit that zero percenter. This question was from
- 3:35Speaker 2: episode four ninety five. The topic was wildlife and nobody
- 3:40Speaker 2: got it right ready. Jack Olsen's classic nineteen sixty nine
- 3:46Speaker 2: book The Knight of the Grizzlies, which details the fatal
- 3:49Speaker 2: maulings of two young women in Glacier National Park, was
- 3:52Speaker 2: originally a three part article for What Popular magazine Sports Illustrates,
- 4:01Speaker 2: Oh were you here that day?
- 4:02Speaker 7: Corey?
- 4:04Speaker 2: That was good. The incorrect answers given that day were
- 4:08Speaker 2: Field and Stream, that GEO, Outdoor Life, and Time Magazine.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I'm impressed by that well known Thank you.
- 4:15Speaker 7: It's good start.
- 4:16Speaker 2: So here's our Infrequently Asked Questions segment. If you have
- 4:19Speaker 2: a trivia related question for our crew, please send it
- 4:22Speaker 2: to Trivia at the meat Eater dot com with the
- 4:24Speaker 2: subject line I f a Q. Dustin Shwitt wants to know.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Does doctor Randall do better when Brody isn't present for trivia?
- 4:34Speaker 2: It seems like he does. I think doctor Randall is
- 4:37Speaker 2: more nervous when Brody is there. I don't really know
- 4:42Speaker 2: how I wanna address this one. I think it's probably
- 4:46Speaker 2: safe to say is a statistical reality that doctor Randall
- 4:49Speaker 2: does do better when Brody isn't present for trivia. But
- 4:52Speaker 2: I'm not sure I'd like to give Brody the power
- 4:56Speaker 2: of saying that he makes me nervous. I think it's
- 4:58Speaker 2: just sort of knowing that the stakes are high and
- 5:00Speaker 2: any sort of slip up on my part could result
- 5:02Speaker 2: in a catastrophic, disappointing defeat.
- 5:05Speaker 6: Randall makes Randall nervous.
- 5:07Speaker 8: I do well. Put.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I don't think of myself as a particularly nervous individual.
- 5:14Speaker 2: But okay, I just like to have fun, you know,
- 5:16Speaker 2: keep it lively.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Sometimes it looks like you're not having fun, though.
- 5:20Speaker 2: It's all fun. This is a joy every.
- 5:22Speaker 8: Time I stop in this room.
- 5:24Speaker 2: It's the best. Now transition. The Sydney Index for the
- 5:32Speaker 2: Sydney Index for today is a four, so our winner
- 5:35Speaker 2: should get eight correct answers. And in fact, I think
- 5:37Speaker 2: there's the potential for a perfect game. So with that,
- 5:41Speaker 2: we are onto the game of trivia. Phil Please play
- 5:45Speaker 2: the drop.
- 5:47Speaker 6: Look, I need to know what I stand to win everything.
- 5:53Speaker 8: I'm saying, just tend to win everything.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Demon Suckers Question one. This question falls under the category
- 6:08Speaker 2: of woodsmanship. What seven letter term refers to a type
- 6:13Speaker 2: of forest that resembles a corridor of trees, typically cottonwoods
- 6:18Speaker 2: and willows in western North America along the edges of rivers.
- 6:23Speaker 2: What and the it's a multiple choice question. The four
- 6:26Speaker 2: answers are gallery, bankhead belt, and tunnel.
- 6:32Speaker 6: I think I know the answer.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Do you know the answer?
- 6:41Speaker 6: Well, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna say anymore, but
- 6:46Speaker 6: I think I have it.
- 6:47Speaker 7: I didn't know the answer till you asked the question.
- 6:49Speaker 6: Yeah, then I knew it. Oh shit, you got okay, Yeah,
- 6:57Speaker 6: let's not spoil it for the listeners at home.
- 7:00Speaker 8: Yeah, or.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Yet yeah? What seven letter refers to a type of
- 7:09Speaker 2: forest that resembles a corridor of trees, typically cottonwoods and
- 7:14Speaker 2: willows in western North America along the edges of rivers.
- 7:18Speaker 7: Thank you for the hint.
- 7:19Speaker 6: I suspect this wasn't a multiple choice question, and then
- 7:23Speaker 6: at some point you like, this one's too hard, I
- 7:24Speaker 6: should make this multiple choice Spencer.
- 7:28Speaker 2: You're exactly right. You're exactly right.
- 7:31Speaker 6: Good question.
- 7:32Speaker 8: I wish it wasn't multiple choice.
- 7:35Speaker 2: You know, I thought a couple of people would know it.
- 7:36Speaker 2: But well, this is just off to a great start.
- 7:41Speaker 8: The pile of squirrels in Cottonwood.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I will I will say for our listeners again, the
- 7:50Speaker 2: answers are gallery, bank, head, belt, or tunnel. We all
- 7:57Speaker 2: have answers at the table here. I presume, as you
- 8:02Speaker 2: guessed the answer, the answer is this, Oh, I'm sorry.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Tresa has gallery, Logan has gallery, Gorey's Gallery, Spencer Has Gallery,
- 8:12Speaker 2: Galas Gallery, Glex's Gallery, Revez Gallery, and giannis As Gallery.
- 8:19Speaker 2: The only seven litter term among those four answer options
- 8:23Speaker 2: is a gallery. The whole room did remarkably.
- 8:29Speaker 6: I'm gonna do that in the kids episode. Sometimes that's
- 8:32Speaker 6: a great trick.
- 8:33Speaker 2: This is just a test to see how closely you're
- 8:35Speaker 2: paying attention to me. Gallery forests and the American West
- 8:39Speaker 2: occur along major rivers and streams from southern Saskatchewan to
- 8:42Speaker 2: northern Texas, and from the Rocky Mountains to the western
- 8:45Speaker 2: borders of Minnesota and Iowa and eastern Kansas. Gallery forests
- 8:49Speaker 2: grow in narrow strips that generally range from thirty feet
- 8:52Speaker 2: to four hundred feet in width, rarely more than ten
- 8:55Speaker 2: to fifteen feet above the river level. Some of the
- 8:57Speaker 2: major watersheds associated with this four worst type or the Arkansas,
- 9:01Speaker 2: the Kansas, the Platte, the Nibarra, the Missouri, the Red
- 9:04Speaker 2: and the milk Rivers. Now, who would have gotten that
- 9:09Speaker 2: answer correct had had I not revealed it in my
- 9:13Speaker 2: in my question, you're honest, Jana stands alone. Well, sorry
- 9:17Speaker 2: to do that to you.
- 9:18Speaker 6: Last episode, Randall tried to make a declaration about pulling
- 9:22Speaker 6: a Kelsey, which is like when you reveal an answer.
- 9:25Speaker 6: But now Randall's done it twice. Oh back to bag
- 9:28Speaker 6: Weeks the host. I think it's yeah pulling it.
- 9:31Speaker 2: I'm just glad it was the first question. So we
- 9:33Speaker 2: can start this episode up on off on a good note.
- 9:36Speaker 5: Snapper if it's pulling a Randy?
- 9:40Speaker 2: Question two. This question falls under the category of fishing.
- 9:45Speaker 2: What fishing tackle brand, known primarily for its lead split
- 9:49Speaker 2: shot takes part of its two word name from a
- 9:52Speaker 2: mischievous mythical creature? Again, what fishing tackle brand, known primarily
- 10:01Speaker 2: for its lead split shot takes part of its two
- 10:04Speaker 2: word name from a mischievous mythical creature?
- 10:08Speaker 6: I really like this question. I'd like it more if
- 10:09Speaker 6: I knew it.
- 10:10Speaker 8: I only know one when you tuck those babies into
- 10:17Speaker 8: your lips?
- 10:17Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Yeah, they just fit between your teeth. Yanni
- 10:23Speaker 2: says an answer, Cal has an answer, Corey Tresa, Logan
- 10:27Speaker 2: has an answer.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Is my answer have to have two words?
- 10:32Speaker 5: I would hope.
- 10:33Speaker 8: So just make me sure.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Reeve is still looking for an answer. Alec and Spencer,
- 10:41Speaker 2: I mean there's something on my board? Are we are
- 10:47Speaker 2: we ready to flip our boards over? Do we want
- 10:49Speaker 2: to give it another minute?
- 10:50Speaker 8: Here?
- 10:50Speaker 6: Flip It's not gonna come to me.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Cal says, let's flip them gang, Let's flip them over,
- 10:57Speaker 2: he says, Margylures, Logan says eagle claw, Corey Gnome shot,
- 11:03Speaker 2: Spencer Nome weights. Cal says water gremlin. Alex says gremlin,
- 11:08Speaker 2: Revas says Medusa Tackle and Yannis says water gremlin. Cal
- 11:13Speaker 2: and Yannis got it right. Water gremlin. A gremlin is
- 11:18Speaker 2: a mischievous creature that causes trouble in mechanical and electrical systems,
- 11:22Speaker 2: and became popular among aviators in World War Two as
- 11:25Speaker 2: a way of explaining aircraft malfunctions. The Water Gremlin Company
- 11:30Speaker 2: of White Bear Township, Minnesota, was founded in nineteen forty
- 11:33Speaker 2: nine as a manufacturer of recreational fishing products. In recent years,
- 11:37Speaker 2: it has been involved in a number of pollution and
- 11:39Speaker 2: workplace safety scandals, and in twenty twenty three it filed
- 11:42Speaker 2: for bankruptcy as a result of ninety five civil lawsuits
- 11:45Speaker 2: holding water Gremlin accountable for emitting excessive amounts of the
- 11:48Speaker 2: carcinogenic chemical TCE, which has been linked to chronic illnesses, cancer,
- 11:52Speaker 2: and wrongful deaths in the surrounding community.
- 11:54Speaker 6: And calcin tastes him. Yeah, not a sponsor of media,
- 12:00Speaker 6: I take no.
- 12:01Speaker 2: They filed for bankruptcy. Walmart pulled them from their shelves,
- 12:04Speaker 2: I think prior to that, and so I was unaware
- 12:06Speaker 2: of that until I started doing my research here, but
- 12:09Speaker 2: learned something new every day. Question three. This is our
- 12:13Speaker 2: listener question of the Week, which was won by Jeff
- 12:16Speaker 2: Tucker for sending this great question. Jeff is going to
- 12:18Speaker 2: get a board game signed by the crew. If you
- 12:21Speaker 2: want a chance to win the listener Question of the Week,
- 12:23Speaker 2: then send your question to Trivia at the meat Eater
- 12:26Speaker 2: dot com. This category this question falls into the category
- 12:30Speaker 2: of conservation. What nineteenth century English naturalist, while circumnavigating the world,
- 12:36Speaker 2: described the meat roasted from the breastplate of giant tortoises
- 12:40Speaker 2: as quote very good yep, apologies again. What nineteenth century
- 12:47Speaker 2: English naturalist, while circumnavigating the world, described the meat roasted
- 12:53Speaker 2: from the breastplate of giant tortoises as very good? Col's
- 13:00Speaker 2: got an answer?
- 13:01Speaker 5: I do have an answer.
- 13:03Speaker 2: M heart's a hot start for cal Is it because
- 13:07Speaker 2: I know it?
- 13:07Speaker 5: Or is it because I only know one English naturalist? Well?
- 13:12Speaker 2: Right, I don't know.
- 13:14Speaker 8: I wish I could think of one English natural Yeah,
- 13:18Speaker 8: I wish that was a helpful hands, but it's it's not.
- 13:22Speaker 6: Phil What role do do gremlins play in like the
- 13:26Speaker 6: supernatural worlds that you you're involved with?
- 13:30Speaker 4: I only know most of my lore comes from the
- 13:32Speaker 4: Joe Dante film.
- 13:34Speaker 8: That's right.
- 13:36Speaker 3: That.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Yeah, but don't get them wet, don't feed them after midnight.
- 13:40Speaker 4: Yeah, there's there's tons of rules.
- 13:42Speaker 9: Honestly, there is a pretty cool for anyone in the
- 13:44Speaker 9: Greater Bozeman metropolitan area. There's a great I think someone
- 13:47Speaker 9: talked about this is the second time plug. Yeah, there's
- 13:49Speaker 9: there's a cool mythical creatures exhibit at the museum right
- 13:52Speaker 9: now from like all different cultures from all around the world.
- 13:55Speaker 9: And I, I mean I was just there for this
- 13:58Speaker 9: second time because I have children and I don't remember gremlin,
- 14:02Speaker 9: but maybe it.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Maybe it's a recent it's a recent invention.
- 14:07Speaker 6: Phil, Is that where you can see the Axeltel? I
- 14:09Speaker 6: assumed it was.
- 14:10Speaker 4: That's at the Montana Science Center.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Oh okay, we're cross pollinating our references here.
- 14:15Speaker 5: When I first heard about the Mythical Creature exhibit as
- 14:18Speaker 5: pretty disappointed. In the Museum of the Rockeys, we talked
- 14:21Speaker 5: about this johanness, but then when we went I was
- 14:24Speaker 5: relieved to see how they tied it into uh, real
- 14:29Speaker 5: creatures that probably were the genesis of the myths.
- 14:32Speaker 8: Nice.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it looks like most folks. Yanna still has a
- 14:36Speaker 2: blank board here, mm hmm. Reva, do you have an answer?
- 14:41Speaker 2: Alec No, I'm going to wait on Giannis here, he's
- 14:45Speaker 2: scrawling something. Were you ready to flip it over? Let's
- 14:50Speaker 2: flip our boards, Tresa says, Meriwether, Lewis Logan, Charles Darwin,
- 14:57Speaker 2: Corey Magellan, Spencer, Darwin, cal Darwin, Alec Blank, Riva, Darwin,
- 15:05Speaker 2: Giannis Audubon. The correct answer is Charles Darwin. A couple
- 15:10Speaker 2: contexts clues there. Giant tortoises circumnavigating the world when Darwin
- 15:17Speaker 2: arrived in the Galapagos Islands aboard the HMS Beagle in
- 15:20Speaker 2: the fall of eighteen thirty five. He noted that the
- 15:22Speaker 2: inhabitant's staple food of giant tortoises meant that they could
- 15:25Speaker 2: count on quote two days hunting, giving them food for
- 15:29Speaker 2: the rest of the week. The local custom, according to Darwin,
- 15:32Speaker 2: was to capture a live tortoise and to make a
- 15:34Speaker 2: slit in the skin near its tail. This was done
- 15:37Speaker 2: in order to take stock of the animal's fat reserves
- 15:40Speaker 2: under its top shell, as the fat was highly valued
- 15:42Speaker 2: for rendering into a clear oil. If a tortoise was
- 15:45Speaker 2: determined to be too lean to supply a decent amount
- 15:47Speaker 2: of oil, the hunter would simply let it walk away
- 15:50Speaker 2: to recover from the As Darwin described it, quote strange
- 15:54Speaker 2: operation effective, though effective, And I appreciate that Jeff Tucker
- 16:00Speaker 2: was thoughtful enough to include a PDF of scanned pages
- 16:04Speaker 2: from his copy of Voyage of the HMS Beagle, so
- 16:07Speaker 2: we could get that that that tasty little tidbit.
- 16:11Speaker 6: There, all right, catch and release tortoise.
- 16:14Speaker 2: And they actually it was very common for ships traveling
- 16:18Speaker 2: the Pacific to just grab hundreds of them and stick
- 16:20Speaker 2: them under the stick them in the hull so they
- 16:23Speaker 2: could have fresh meat for the rest of their voyage.
- 16:25Speaker 5: Because tortoises Spencer, you're a four h kid showing off
- 16:28Speaker 5: a pig. One of the tests that they do is
- 16:31Speaker 5: they poke along the spine of the pig to see
- 16:33Speaker 5: if you allowed that critter to get too fat. You
- 16:36Speaker 5: want that good meat to fat rate. What are they
- 16:39Speaker 5: poking them with just your fingers? But you know Stamford
- 16:44Speaker 5: to have a real hard shell up there, So what
- 16:46Speaker 5: are you going to do?
- 16:47Speaker 2: You got to look under the hood question four. This
- 16:52Speaker 2: question falls under the category of hunting. The nineteen ninety
- 16:55Speaker 2: six film The Ghost and the Darkness starring Val Kilmer
- 16:59Speaker 2: and Michael dougl Us depicts an eighteen ninety eight hunt
- 17:02Speaker 2: for two individual animals of what big game species. The
- 17:08Speaker 2: nineteen ninety six film The Ghost and the Darkness starring
- 17:12Speaker 2: Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas depicts an eighteen ninety eight
- 17:16Speaker 2: hunt for two individual animals of what big game species?
- 17:22Speaker 6: Like?
- 17:22Speaker 8: These are two different species?
- 17:24Speaker 5: One, well, you should read the book and figure it out.
- 17:27Speaker 2: It's a film. It's a film. Well, I'll get into that.
- 17:31Speaker 2: I'll get into that. And I apologize, Phil, I sent
- 17:35Speaker 2: you the wrong spelling of Michael Douglas. My autocorrect wanted
- 17:38Speaker 2: to add a second.
- 17:39Speaker 9: Well, if you couldn't tell from the first question, Randall,
- 17:42Speaker 9: I just copy and paste, actually read these things.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Must we bring that back?
- 17:47Speaker 5: No quality control.
- 17:48Speaker 2: I think we've all moved on from that.
- 17:50Speaker 8: Bill.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Has anybody seen The Ghost.
- 17:54Speaker 6: In the Darkness?
- 17:55Speaker 2: Yep? Great movie, fantastic.
- 17:58Speaker 6: What's some what's the like pottery throwing scene from some
- 18:03Speaker 6: movie that people reference?
- 18:04Speaker 8: Isn't that ghost?
- 18:05Speaker 4: That's not the same thing as I just I just
- 18:07Speaker 4: live corrected it for you.
- 18:08Speaker 6: Okay, No ghost ghost.
- 18:12Speaker 5: Patrick is not the same.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Yeah, although Vali and Swayze sort of the same genre
- 18:20Speaker 2: of hunk.
- 18:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Val Kilmer, I believe, was fresh off his turn as
- 18:25Speaker 2: the Cape Crusader and Batman Forever when he filmed this movie.
- 18:29Speaker 5: There's a great scene about the you don't go using
- 18:31Speaker 5: an unproven rifle.
- 18:33Speaker 8: M M and darkness.
- 18:36Speaker 6: Okay, so they hunted this animal with the with the rifle.
- 18:41Speaker 2: We have Alex writing an answer here, but you've got
- 18:45Speaker 2: your answer. Give like another second here.
- 18:51Speaker 8: I've read the the book to I. It's down between
- 18:56Speaker 8: two species.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Why don't we flip those boards over? Dresa says bears.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Logan says Bear Corey African lion, Spencer Wolf, Cal says
- 19:10Speaker 2: African lion, Alex says elk, Reva says elk, and Gianna
- 19:15Speaker 2: says African lion.
- 19:16Speaker 8: Oh I love how everybody.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Put the proper lion on.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, well yeah. The title of the film
- 19:24Speaker 2: references the nicknames of two lions that killed at least
- 19:27Speaker 2: twenty eight and perhaps as many as seventy workers during
- 19:30Speaker 2: the British colonial government's construction of the Uganda Railway. Imagine
- 19:35Speaker 2: as a cross between Lawrence of Arabia and Jaws. The
- 19:38Speaker 2: Ghost in the Darkness was based on the book The
- 19:40Speaker 2: Man Eaters of Tsavo, written by real life British Army
- 19:43Speaker 2: officer and hunter John Henry Patterson, who's played by Kilmer.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Douglas plays a fictionalized American big game hunter named Charles
- 19:51Speaker 2: Remington who's recruited to bring an end to the lion's
- 19:53Speaker 2: bloody depredations. Roger Ebert said the film was so awful
- 19:58Speaker 2: it quote lacked the usual charm of being so bad
- 20:01Speaker 2: it's funny, and added that it was quote an African
- 20:04Speaker 2: adventure that makes the Tarzan movies look subtle and realistic
- 20:08Speaker 2: and Phil, it's my understanding that we we have the
- 20:11Speaker 2: trailer that we can share with our contestants here perfect
- 20:15Speaker 2: and feel free to cut it off when you think
- 20:17Speaker 2: we've seen enough. I know it's long.
- 20:20Speaker 7: Aren't these two lions in a museum in Chicago Field Museum.
- 20:23Speaker 8: I've seen them.
- 20:24Speaker 3: I've never seen them here.
- 20:26Speaker 4: They're big.
- 20:29Speaker 10: Oh my god, Lions don't do this. Lions never had
- 20:35Speaker 10: a layer like this. They're doing it for the pleasure.
- 20:42Speaker 2: They are not lions. They are the ghost and the darkness.
- 20:47Speaker 6: Don't end this, Phil, You're in a race, and.
- 20:50Speaker 2: The prize is the continent of Africa.
- 20:53Speaker 7: We are building the most expensive and daring railroad in
- 20:56Speaker 7: history for the glorious purpose of saving Africa from the
- 21:00Speaker 7: Africans on the coast and slavery.
- 21:04Speaker 2: How many do you think they've killed?
- 21:06Speaker 6: A hundred?
- 21:07Speaker 8: Maybe more?
- 21:11Speaker 1: Do we wish the world to think that.
- 21:15Speaker 6: Because of a few minor difficulties with the local wildlie?
- 21:18Speaker 3: Are you sure this was a lion?
- 21:23Speaker 4: I'm gonna look at Remington.
- 21:24Speaker 8: I assume you've heard of him.
- 21:27Speaker 10: And you see a problem with that. Actually, no, let's
- 21:33Speaker 10: go after them.
- 21:37Speaker 4: There are so many cuts in this trailer.
- 21:43Speaker 8: Stay out of my way?
- 21:45Speaker 6: Do we ever see a lion?
- 21:50Speaker 5: That's what gets hit from Spencer? They move so fast?
- 21:53Speaker 2: Then why do it they're not lions with the ghosts
- 21:56Speaker 2: in the darkness?
- 21:56Speaker 6: Because I've got a gift Alchember the ghost and the
- 22:17Speaker 6: dark Wow, Okay, thank you will. What accent are they
- 22:20Speaker 6: supposed to have there?
- 22:23Speaker 5: Oh?
- 22:25Speaker 2: You know, I'm not quite sure. I think that they're
- 22:28Speaker 2: They're all.
- 22:28Speaker 5: British colonization, so you're gonna have a mix of culture.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Yeah, but Cal's right, that one fellow, he always I
- 22:35Speaker 2: don't know the name of the actor, but he always
- 22:37Speaker 2: plays a real imperious uh yeah, snobby official.
- 22:41Speaker 5: Yeah, thinks he knows better than everybody.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Question five. What large non native game bird found in
- 22:50Speaker 2: Nevada's Ruby Mountains can be located by its high pitched
- 22:54Speaker 2: whistling sounds and has been described as an upland hunter's
- 22:57Speaker 2: holy grail due to the challenging to rain in which
- 23:00Speaker 2: it lives. I'll read that one again. What large non
- 23:07Speaker 2: native game bird found in Nevada's Ruby Mountains can be
- 23:10Speaker 2: located by its high pitched whistling sounds and has been
- 23:14Speaker 2: described as an upland hunter's holy grail? Due to the
- 23:17Speaker 2: challenging terrain in which it lives. Phil This is one
- 23:22Speaker 2: of those questions that I tried to slim down and
- 23:25Speaker 2: squeeze a few words out of. But I wanted to
- 23:27Speaker 2: just get some clues in there.
- 23:29Speaker 5: You know, honest grand slam turkey hunter, what turkey species?
- 23:35Speaker 8: It's? The clue is it's not a turkey species.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Cow's thrown out a little misdirection.
- 23:42Speaker 5: Cow's doe.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Gobble's got an answer.
- 23:46Speaker 8: Someone talk about this, but I don't know it's right.
- 23:48Speaker 5: Uh.
- 23:49Speaker 8: Meader has multiple times thought about researched, looked at doing
- 23:55Speaker 8: an episode around this non native game bird. But you
- 24:01Speaker 8: have to pull the trigger on doing it.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Well, it's an imposing topography there. That's rights of North America.
- 24:08Speaker 8: They call it very low success rate.
- 24:12Speaker 4: I know a lot of guys that do it a
- 24:16Speaker 4: real easy way.
- 24:19Speaker 2: You got, well, you reveal that trick to us once
- 24:22Speaker 2: we're recording baiting.
- 24:26Speaker 5: I don't want to give anything away.
- 24:29Speaker 8: Are you gonna tell us after we reveal our answers?
- 24:32Speaker 2: They wrote, Cory, I see you've got a blank board.
- 24:36Speaker 7: There, look like looks like and I can't come up
- 24:39Speaker 7: with the name.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Trusty, You've got an answer and I'm not an artist
- 24:42Speaker 2: feeling good. Alec Nova, Come on, I can't.
- 24:51Speaker 6: African line.
- 24:52Speaker 2: They're all funny guesses. Cory's written something down, but he
- 24:57Speaker 2: doesn't like it.
- 24:59Speaker 8: Oh, it's not correct.
- 25:00Speaker 2: I thought this was one you'd know.
- 25:02Speaker 7: I do know it, and I'll tell you the answer
- 25:05Speaker 7: when we reveal our answer.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Gang, are we ready to flip those boards? Let's do it?
- 25:12Speaker 2: Tresa says ruffed grouse, Logan says chucker, Cory says Russian Ptarmigan, Spencer,
- 25:19Speaker 2: Himalayan Snowcock, Cal Snowcock. Alec is not an answer, Reeve
- 25:25Speaker 2: is not an answer, and Yanna says Himalayan Snowcock. We've
- 25:30Speaker 2: got a correct answer in the room. It's Himalayan Snowcock,
- 25:33Speaker 2: Spencer and Yanni Scott that Cal says snow Cock.
- 25:38Speaker 5: I'm gonna I know, I know exactly what I think.
- 25:45Speaker 2: I do lean towards giving it to you. What, let's
- 25:48Speaker 2: get it to Cal.
- 25:50Speaker 6: They share an office, so there's some politics.
- 25:53Speaker 4: Yeah, that's true.
- 25:54Speaker 2: I mean Corey had the construction Russian Ptarmigan Snowcock.
- 26:00Speaker 7: I knew that were talking for right, depends on where
- 26:02Speaker 7: you're from, obviously.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Yeah, let's count snowcock.
- 26:05Speaker 8: There.
- 26:05Speaker 2: A member of the pheasant family, Himalayan snowcock evolved to
- 26:09Speaker 2: survive in alpine meadows and on steep rocky cliffs in
- 26:12Speaker 2: Central and South Asia, but were introduced to the Ruey
- 26:15Speaker 2: Mountains in nineteen sixty three. The Nevada Fish and Game
- 26:18Speaker 2: Commission secured the original birds for a captive breeding program
- 26:22Speaker 2: from Pakistan, and by the early nineteen eighties the species
- 26:25Speaker 2: had taken permanent hold in the rugged terrain of the Rubies.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Himalayan snowcock roost at elevations up to eleven thousand feet,
- 26:32Speaker 2: and males can weigh up to seven pounds. The daily
- 26:35Speaker 2: bag limit is two birds.
- 26:38Speaker 6: Now, how does someone hunt these things? With these.
- 26:42Speaker 5: I've known some miners underground, hard rock miners there and
- 26:48Speaker 5: they their snow on the ground. They're right in their snowmobiles.
- 26:53Speaker 8: Hmm.
- 26:53Speaker 5: They just rip up there and eventually shoot one.
- 26:56Speaker 6: Does any other place have them besides Nevada?
- 26:58Speaker 2: That's it North America. I think they there's another subsidiary
- 27:06Speaker 2: range in Nevada that might have them, but uh, yeah,
- 27:09Speaker 2: that's it. That's it Nevada and obviously Asia. With that,
- 27:14Speaker 2: we're now halfway through our game of trivia. Phil can
- 27:17Speaker 2: I please have a score update?
- 27:19Speaker 8: You can.
- 27:20Speaker 9: Indeed, we've got Rissa and alec On with their they
- 27:24Speaker 9: got number one right, they got one piece, got Logan
- 27:28Speaker 9: and boat ramp, Fish, Logan, Riva and Corey. I'll have
- 27:32Speaker 9: two points, Spencer's got three, Giannis has four and in
- 27:35Speaker 9: first place with a perfect game. Holy cow, it's Ryan Collen.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Oh oh if you if you get a perfect game
- 27:43Speaker 2: right now, there's gonna be some questions about I remind
- 27:46Speaker 2: everyone they shared no well, he as you say. As
- 27:50Speaker 2: you say with Shelby, she knows you, yeah, and cal
- 27:53Speaker 2: knows me.
- 27:55Speaker 6: He could hear you watching the trailer to the Ghost
- 27:58Speaker 6: in the Darkness.
- 28:01Speaker 2: I did make sure to close out when he walked
- 28:03Speaker 2: into that.
- 28:04Speaker 4: Red Yeah for three hours.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Question six. This question falls under the category of cooking.
- 28:12Speaker 2: What regional style of hot dog which shares its name
- 28:16Speaker 2: with North America's second largest hot desert typically comes wrapped
- 28:20Speaker 2: in bacon with pinto beans, chopped tomatoes, grilled onions and peppers, mustard,
- 28:25Speaker 2: kilipeno sauce.
- 28:26Speaker 8: And mayo.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Wow, I'll read that again. What regional style of hot
- 28:32Speaker 2: dog which shares its name with North America's second largest
- 28:35Speaker 2: hot desert typically comes wrapped in bacon with pinto beans,
- 28:40Speaker 2: chopped tomatoes, grilled onions and peppers, mustard, kalipeno sauce, and
- 28:44Speaker 2: mayo hungry. Oh it's good, And I added I'd like
- 28:49Speaker 2: to point out that even if you're not familiar with
- 28:51Speaker 2: your tube steak variations, I added that little uh note
- 28:56Speaker 2: at the top, So if you know your deserts, you
- 28:58Speaker 2: have a chance.
- 29:02Speaker 6: You got this one.
- 29:03Speaker 8: Yanni, Yes, you.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Need to happy with this question.
- 29:06Speaker 6: You didn't need the desert hints.
- 29:08Speaker 8: I've eaten quite a few of these. Okay down in Tucson.
- 29:13Speaker 2: All right, what are you doing?
- 29:16Speaker 6: What are you?
- 29:17Speaker 8: Just gave it to me? I think, No, I didn't
- 29:20Speaker 8: give it to you.
- 29:21Speaker 6: Yeah you did.
- 29:22Speaker 4: No, I didn't know. I didn't.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Uh.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Cal Cal's looking honest like he wants another clue.
- 29:33Speaker 5: The restaurant. We've beaten there a couple of times. Steve's
- 29:35Speaker 5: always like very disappointed, but everybody else loves it. That's great.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Have you found that they include two uh wieners sometimes? Yeah,
- 29:47Speaker 2: I've never really seen that with any other hot dog.
- 29:49Speaker 6: And they are they like a ballpark, frank, like the
- 29:52Speaker 6: cheapest ninety nine cent hot dogs.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think they're a little skinnier. If you're
- 29:56Speaker 2: referring to like the brand ballpark, I think they're an
- 30:00Speaker 2: here than Okay, looks like we've got answers.
- 30:06Speaker 8: Rest.
- 30:07Speaker 5: I can't remember the name of the restaurant, A Reva.
- 30:11Speaker 5: I've never this is too fancy BA hot dog, so
- 30:14Speaker 5: I've never gotten actually eaten this one.
- 30:16Speaker 2: But do you have an answer? Yeah, okay, I don't
- 30:19Speaker 2: think it's right, but let's flip those boards over. Gang
- 30:23Speaker 2: Tresa says death Valley Logan, Nevada Dogs, Cory Mohave Dog, Spencer,
- 30:30Speaker 2: Sonoran Dog, cal Sonora Dog, alec Nothing, Reva, Sierra Giannis, Sonoran.
- 30:38Speaker 2: The correct answer is Sonoran Dog. Sonoran dogs were invented
- 30:43Speaker 2: in the Sonora region of northern Mexico and arrived in
- 30:46Speaker 2: Tucson in the nineteen eighties. Although they remain a local
- 30:50Speaker 2: specialist in Arizona, today, you can find them served anywhere
- 30:53Speaker 2: from Austin, Texas to Los Angeles. In addition to their
- 30:56Speaker 2: unique blend of toppings, these tasty treats are known for
- 31:00Speaker 2: the sweet, pillowy buns that almost completely engulf the frankfurter
- 31:05Speaker 2: Alguero Canelo.
- 31:06Speaker 8: There you go, multiple locations. There in Tucson. I highly
- 31:10Speaker 8: recommend you go get us an orange dog there. I
- 31:12Speaker 8: like to do James Beard nominee. I think I actually
- 31:17Speaker 8: read about their winner, but I think they're nominee.
- 31:20Speaker 2: In preparation for this round of trivia, I think I
- 31:22Speaker 2: read about that place. We're onto question seven. This question
- 31:28Speaker 2: falls under the category of fishing. What style of fly
- 31:32Speaker 2: fishing first made famous in international competitions makes use of
- 31:37Speaker 2: extra long rods, extra long, thin leaders, and heavy flies
- 31:41Speaker 2: with no split shot or strike indicator. I'll read that again.
- 31:47Speaker 2: What style of fly fishing first made famous in international
- 31:51Speaker 2: competitions makes use of extra long rods, extra long, thin leaders,
- 31:57Speaker 2: and heavy flies with no split shot or strike indicator.
- 32:03Speaker 1: I thought.
- 32:07Speaker 2: This is a niche a niche style, Joanna says an answer.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Spencer has an answer. Cal's writing dress has got an answer.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Logan's got an answer.
- 32:18Speaker 5: You're you're messing me up with the perfect flies.
- 32:23Speaker 6: He's got a perfect game going over here, So let's
- 32:25Speaker 6: just go with weighted flies. Cal Oh, wow, okay, specific
- 32:28Speaker 6: hand out hints to his office hand it out, Well, I.
- 32:32Speaker 5: Just it is imprecisely, it goes to everybody. Yeah, so
- 32:36Speaker 5: that's that's pretty nice. You're welcome. I guess that is
- 32:40Speaker 5: what I'm saying.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Corey. How are you feeling there?
- 32:44Speaker 5: Pretty good?
- 32:45Speaker 7: You doing good?
- 32:46Speaker 5: Good?
- 32:46Speaker 2: I'm great good.
- 32:47Speaker 6: What's the hat you're wearing? Tresa?
- 32:49Speaker 5: That Oh?
- 32:55Speaker 8: Was that that like gas station that has breakfast?
- 32:57Speaker 10: Oh?
- 32:58Speaker 8: Yeah, that place is good.
- 33:00Speaker 5: It's right when we come out of the.
- 33:03Speaker 8: Whatever that place called Tuxedo Penguin place, Cal where we've
- 33:07Speaker 8: had the first like he's thinking, he's thinking anyways, saw
- 33:11Speaker 8: Bakery is.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Also great stuff.
- 33:14Speaker 6: With the snoring dog. Do they ramp the hot dog
- 33:17Speaker 6: and bacon?
- 33:18Speaker 8: They do?
- 33:19Speaker 2: I think, yeah, yeah, it's bizarre, like I felt like
- 33:23Speaker 2: half the ones I got there were two hot dogs
- 33:26Speaker 2: mm hmmm. Which I mean if we're intermixing and adopting
- 33:32Speaker 2: different culinary traditions, I would recommend to.
- 33:35Speaker 8: Others kind of while we're letting Cal think on this
- 33:39Speaker 8: little segue from snoring hot dogs. Since there's mayo in there,
- 33:42Speaker 8: and you guys tried that h Korean mao that's at
- 33:47Speaker 8: Costco now, I think, yeah, yeah, it's pretty tasty.
- 33:53Speaker 5: That's Japanese.
- 33:54Speaker 8: Maybe it is Japanese.
- 33:55Speaker 6: I thought I heard cow singer praises you like their
- 33:57Speaker 6: barbecue sauce or something.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I've had the barbecue.
- 34:00Speaker 5: That's that's the that's not cute. Yeah, with a little
- 34:05Speaker 5: octopus which is actually American.
- 34:07Speaker 6: Mm hmmm.
- 34:09Speaker 8: Is that stuff also at Costco?
- 34:11Speaker 4: It is, yes, because that's where I bet.
- 34:13Speaker 6: We're a big Kinders family. Get a lot of the
- 34:15Speaker 6: things of the Kinders condiments. A big fan of those.
- 34:19Speaker 6: They make mayonnaise, make everything. I don't know if they
- 34:22Speaker 6: make mayo, but they make like, you know, like a
- 34:24Speaker 6: comeback sauce or like some sort of aolie which is
- 34:28Speaker 6: just mao with I think garlic and lemons.
- 34:30Speaker 9: Got a lot of places getting and companies getting free
- 34:32Speaker 9: advertisement on this episode.
- 34:35Speaker 8: Where do you buy this kind?
- 34:36Speaker 6: Are you a negrocery store ever?
- 34:39Speaker 8: Are you?
- 34:40Speaker 2: Have you made your decision?
- 34:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm good enough. Let's That's what I was thinking.
- 34:46Speaker 5: Is the thing that they do down in the trucky
- 34:48Speaker 5: all the time?
- 34:49Speaker 2: Tressa has got Spae. Logan says Spae fishing, Cory says Spae,
- 34:55Speaker 2: Spencer says, you're cal says Spae got nothing nothing nothing,
- 35:01Speaker 2: and Yanni says, check nymphing. The answer is euro nymphing,
- 35:06Speaker 2: but we will also accept check nymphing.
- 35:08Speaker 8: I don't like the way.
- 35:09Speaker 4: That's uh, it was asked for, I got, I got
- 35:13Speaker 4: to it.
- 35:13Speaker 5: But it's like everything like, well then extra long thin
- 35:18Speaker 5: leader is the thing, and it's like, well, everything's kind
- 35:23Speaker 5: of got an extra long thin leader.
- 35:24Speaker 2: No, it's extra meaning that it's longer than most leaders.
- 35:28Speaker 4: Yeah, but like you could have leaders.
- 35:30Speaker 2: It's made famous in international competitions.
- 35:33Speaker 5: That's one clear hint.
- 35:35Speaker 6: There's I think.
- 35:39Speaker 2: I don't think that's correct. Fishing is a competition. It
- 35:44Speaker 2: was made famous in the international competition circuit.
- 35:47Speaker 4: Obviously don't know.
- 35:50Speaker 8: Eu.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Also known as check nymphing, this style of angling involves
- 35:56Speaker 2: lobbing a long, thin monofilament leader from twenty to thirty
- 35:59Speaker 2: fe long upstream and letting the weighted fly tick along
- 36:03Speaker 2: the bottom. Euro Nymphing allows an angler to methodically sweep
- 36:06Speaker 2: the bottom of a run, especially in fast flowing pocket water,
- 36:09Speaker 2: where a traditional nymph indicator setup might get swept downstream
- 36:14Speaker 2: before the fly has a chance to sink.
- 36:16Speaker 4: But here's the deal.
- 36:16Speaker 5: You got your pocket full of water gram one?
- 36:19Speaker 8: Yeah, put that. That's right, all right?
- 36:23Speaker 6: Well question eight, I didn't know what euro nymphing is.
- 36:27Speaker 6: I feel like I only ever hear it used as
- 36:29Speaker 6: a joke. It's a pejorative in a lot of circles.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, if you buy I mean a lot of
- 36:36Speaker 2: a lot of manufacturers specify like a euro rod and
- 36:39Speaker 2: it'll be like a ten or eleven foot rod and
- 36:42Speaker 2: you're just kind of like you're almost it's not quite
- 36:44Speaker 2: flossing because the fish is well.
- 36:47Speaker 8: And there's no indicator. Usually, like a lot of people
- 36:50Speaker 8: will actually just mark the leader.
- 36:52Speaker 2: They have a colored mark on the leader that they
- 36:55Speaker 2: can Yeah, it's not a it's not an indicator.
- 36:58Speaker 5: It's not a bobber, but it's an but it's just
- 37:01Speaker 5: kind of this thing that you look at and when
- 37:03Speaker 5: it twitches you set the hook.
- 37:04Speaker 4: That's totally different.
- 37:05Speaker 8: It indicates a strike.
- 37:07Speaker 2: I'm going to move on before you guys embarrass yourself further.
- 37:13Speaker 4: Question eight Standard ground randal.
- 37:16Speaker 2: This question falls under the category of hunting. Non Resident
- 37:20Speaker 2: hunters in Alaska with US citizenship must be accompanied by
- 37:24Speaker 2: either a guide or a resident within the second degree
- 37:27Speaker 2: of kindred to hunt which three big game species? Non
- 37:33Speaker 2: Resident hunters in Alaska with US citizenship must be accompanied
- 37:38Speaker 2: by either a guide or a resident within the second
- 37:41Speaker 2: degree of kindred to hunt which three big game species?
- 37:48Speaker 2: So we're looking for all three here. There's some writing
- 37:55Speaker 2: going on. Puzzled looks. Spencer's writing furiously.
- 38:05Speaker 6: I'm going to write down some options, give myself a choice,
- 38:07Speaker 6: and start crossing them off.
- 38:12Speaker 8: Great tactic. Mm hmmm mmmm.
- 38:19Speaker 2: Reeva's laughing. I haven't seen her marker move quite yet.
- 38:23Speaker 2: This is not a yeah. So we're looking again. We're
- 38:30Speaker 2: looking for the three big game species in Alaska, for
- 38:34Speaker 2: which a non resident hunter must be accompanied by either
- 38:37Speaker 2: a guide or a resident within the second degree of kindred.
- 38:41Speaker 6: You got this, Yani.
- 38:46Speaker 2: Does anybody out there dream of hunting Alaska?
- 38:50Speaker 4: Have you?
- 38:51Speaker 2: Have you often been frustrated by the guide requirement for
- 38:54Speaker 2: one of the animals you'd like to pursue.
- 38:56Speaker 7: No, I'm all for it, all right.
- 38:57Speaker 2: I like it as a former Oh my god, I
- 39:00Speaker 2: was gonna.
- 39:00Speaker 6: Say, I always dream about it and then like start
- 39:03Speaker 6: doing the pricing for it, and I'll do it like
- 39:06Speaker 6: five years, and then in five years it's doubled in price.
- 39:09Speaker 6: And that happens every time.
- 39:10Speaker 2: It doesn't get cheaper. How are we doing? Gang? Logan's writing, Corey,
- 39:17Speaker 2: you've got your three. You're happy with him? No, I'm
- 39:19Speaker 2: not happy with them. Spencer's got three?
- 39:21Speaker 6: Yeah, one or two?
- 39:22Speaker 3: Right?
- 39:22Speaker 5: I mean you got two of them?
- 39:23Speaker 8: Right?
- 39:24Speaker 2: Oh?
- 39:24Speaker 8: How many are three?
- 39:28Speaker 2: Three species?
- 39:29Speaker 8: You have three animals written down?
- 39:31Speaker 2: Alec, you're feeling good, So I like that. I like
- 39:36Speaker 2: the confidence. Cal you got three, I got three. Looks
- 39:40Speaker 2: like Tress' is still writing. We got three. Let's flip
- 39:46Speaker 2: them over. Gang Tressa says moose, caribou and reindeer. Logan
- 39:51Speaker 2: says moose, sheep, mountain goat. Corey says doll sheep, brown bear,
- 39:57Speaker 2: stone sheep. Spencer says brown bear, doll sheep, stone sheep.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Cal says sheep goat, brown bear. Alex says bear, grizzly
- 40:06Speaker 2: sheep goat. Revas says moose, grizzly bear, brown bear. Gianna
- 40:11Speaker 2: says grizz doll, sheep, mountain goat.
- 40:14Speaker 5: But there's a curveball here to Muskox, right, because in
- 40:18Speaker 5: the Muskox area.
- 40:19Speaker 4: You have to have a native guy.
- 40:22Speaker 6: We're gonna get to it here.
- 40:24Speaker 2: Sorry, I'm just going by the red book.
- 40:27Speaker 4: Sorry, babe, we have a.
- 40:30Speaker 2: Correct answer in the room. It's brown or grizzly bear,
- 40:34Speaker 2: mountain goat, and doll sheep.
- 40:37Speaker 5: Damn, do you have to say doll sheep.
- 40:38Speaker 2: No, actually it actually reads as it actually reads, I
- 40:42Speaker 2: think as sheep and goat hunters. I gave it to
- 40:44Speaker 2: cal Alec and I believe that's correct.
- 40:47Speaker 6: But are there not multiple types of sheep?
- 40:49Speaker 2: There not in Alaska.
- 40:50Speaker 6: There's not doll and stone or are they the same?
- 40:53Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 40:55Speaker 6: Just all damn.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Well.
- 40:58Speaker 2: It is hard to find an explicit justification for this rule.
- 41:01Speaker 2: It is widely understood to be connected to the unique
- 41:04Speaker 2: hazards encountered on these hunts. Extreme terrain in the case
- 41:07Speaker 2: of goats and sheep, and brown bears in the case
- 41:10Speaker 2: of brown bears. Non resident hunters who are not US
- 41:14Speaker 2: citizens must be accompanied by a licensed guide when hunting
- 41:18Speaker 2: any species of big game in Alaska. Now, I looked
- 41:20Speaker 2: this up, tried to find the earliest version of this
- 41:23Speaker 2: rule that I could, and there is a version of
- 41:26Speaker 2: this rule in the July First I'm sorry, in the
- 41:29Speaker 2: nineteen sixty Alaska ADF and G Redbook, which is the
- 41:33Speaker 2: first one ever printed after Alaska statehood in nineteen fifty nine.
- 41:37Speaker 2: In that year's book, the guide requirement applied to anyone
- 41:40Speaker 2: hunting or photographing brown, grizzly and polar bears Mountain goat hunters,
- 41:46Speaker 2: sheep hunters, and walrus hunters, which also makes sense. Now,
- 41:52Speaker 2: I do think the Musko's question it has to do
- 41:56Speaker 2: with warrier hunting and the rules around landown Native corporations.
- 42:01Speaker 2: But to actually get the license through the state as
- 42:04Speaker 2: a non resident, it's it's not a requirement. The room
- 42:11Speaker 2: looks moody. Well, we've got two questions left in our
- 42:16Speaker 2: game of trivia. How is that scoreboard looking?
- 42:19Speaker 9: It is down to kla Janice and Spencer. Technically, if
- 42:24Speaker 9: kalan janis really s the b.
- 42:31Speaker 4: That's a great question. You answer, yes, you can we
- 42:37Speaker 4: visit that.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Yeah, well it's uh, it's looking real close here going
- 42:42Speaker 2: into questions nine and ten. I'm excited to see how
- 42:45Speaker 2: this plays out.
- 42:47Speaker 8: Question nine. You look at question nine.
- 42:51Speaker 2: This question comes to us in the category of fishing.
- 42:55Speaker 2: What large predatory freshwater fish introduced to the Chesapeake Watershed
- 43:00Speaker 2: by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources in nineteen seventy
- 43:04Speaker 2: four now makes up as much as seventy percent of
- 43:07Speaker 2: the biomass in parts of the James and Rappahannock river systems.
- 43:13Speaker 2: I will read that again, no need what large predatory
- 43:18Speaker 2: freshwater fish introduced to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed by the
- 43:22Speaker 2: Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources in nineteen seventy four. Now
- 43:26Speaker 2: makes up as much as seventy percent of the biomass
- 43:30Speaker 2: in parts of the James and Rappahannock river systems. And
- 43:34Speaker 2: I will note here I would be as specific as
- 43:39Speaker 2: you can.
- 43:41Speaker 8: That's a good hint.
- 43:42Speaker 6: If you think the answer is lab, you need to
- 43:45Speaker 6: say black lab.
- 43:46Speaker 2: I thought about using that as an example, but I
- 43:50Speaker 2: thought it might.
- 43:51Speaker 8: Be bleeding stop.
- 43:55Speaker 6: So I were seventy percent of the biomass. That's a
- 43:57Speaker 6: fun stat at.
- 43:59Speaker 2: I've seen it as cited as high as seventy five.
- 44:03Speaker 8: Cal was just on a big fishing trip on the
- 44:06Speaker 8: East coast.
- 44:08Speaker 6: I did, I did rand Did you guys together sending
- 44:12Speaker 6: pictures the whole time he was up He was up.
- 44:14Speaker 2: In New England.
- 44:17Speaker 5: Yeah, the southern part of the New England. Hm. We
- 44:22Speaker 5: did to be fair to talk about the Chesapeake lot.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Well, he didn't tell me that. Give yourself some cover here, buddy.
- 44:33Speaker 5: But we covered in last Yeah, the last episode that
- 44:38Speaker 5: we did that. I'm very rarely there.
- 44:40Speaker 2: And in all fairness to me, Cal doesn't rs VP
- 44:43Speaker 2: for any episode of Trivia, so I.
- 44:45Speaker 6: Had no whether today I got a text in the
- 44:48Speaker 6: night before each time.
- 44:49Speaker 5: Yeah, that's not intentionally. I don't understand how the stupid
- 44:53Speaker 5: Google calendar show button.
- 44:56Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll show you right after this.
- 44:58Speaker 8: I swear I clicked.
- 45:00Speaker 2: He looks like most folks around the table have an answer.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Tresa is going to write something down here.
- 45:07Speaker 6: You got this cord again.
- 45:08Speaker 2: We are looking for a large predatory freshwater fish introduced
- 45:13Speaker 2: to the Chesapeake Bay that now makes up as much
- 45:16Speaker 2: as seventy percent of the biomass in parts of the
- 45:19Speaker 2: James and Rappahannock river systems. Why don't we turn those
- 45:23Speaker 2: boards over? Tresa says, yellow bass, logan tiger, muskie. Corey
- 45:30Speaker 2: Northern Pike, Spencer, blue catfish, cow, blue catfish. Alex says redfish.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Bravis says northern pike. Gianna says blue catfish. We have
- 45:41Speaker 2: a correct answer the room. It's blue catfish. Native to
- 45:45Speaker 2: the Mississippi, Ohio and Missouri river drainages. Blue catfish were
- 45:49Speaker 2: introduced to several rivers in eastern Virginia to provide recreational
- 45:52Speaker 2: opportunities for anglers. Over time, they've spread from freshwater into
- 45:56Speaker 2: brackish tidal estuaries and now occupy most of the major
- 46:00Speaker 2: river systems of the Chesapeake. Blue catfish are voracious predators,
- 46:04Speaker 2: and their overabundance has had negative impact on native populations
- 46:07Speaker 2: of blue crabs, stripe bass, and American eels. In twenty
- 46:11Speaker 2: twenty three, Maryland's Governor Wes Moore requested the US Department
- 46:14Speaker 2: of Commerce issue an emergency disaster declaration for the Chesapeake's
- 46:18Speaker 2: commercial fisheries, specifically citing blue catfish among several invasive species
- 46:23Speaker 2: of concern.
- 46:24Speaker 5: Now full disclosure here for all you conspiracy theorists in
- 46:28Speaker 5: the room. Randall, when he and I did travel to
- 46:32Speaker 5: d C, not this year, but last, I didn't know
- 46:34Speaker 5: about this either. For TRCP deal. He turned me on
- 46:41Speaker 5: to a guy named Ernie the hog Snatchers.
- 46:43Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, okay.
- 46:45Speaker 5: Ernie is great, like showcases, accessible fishing right there in
- 46:51Speaker 5: the DC area, standing.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Next to buildings. Yeah, catching monsters constant.
- 46:55Speaker 5: Yeah, it's on showcases.
- 46:57Speaker 8: It through television, YouTube, Instagram.
- 47:00Speaker 2: I'm sorry Instagram, but he's got the lighted rod tips.
- 47:04Speaker 2: It's great and they dance and he just loses his mind.
- 47:08Speaker 4: Still still loved with you, buddy.
- 47:10Speaker 2: I actually raised that. I showed that to cal and
- 47:13Speaker 2: hopes that a man of his Instagram stature might reach
- 47:16Speaker 2: out to another similarly statured man in the Instagram.
- 47:18Speaker 5: I did several times, and he Alwa says like thanks, Yeah,
- 47:22Speaker 5: it's just not I love it.
- 47:23Speaker 2: I love him.
- 47:24Speaker 5: I don't think he thinks I can rope him in
- 47:26Speaker 5: Like he can't.
- 47:26Speaker 2: He mustles him in.
- 47:28Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 47:29Speaker 6: When I learned that blue cats are native to that area,
- 47:31Speaker 6: I was really disappointed. They just look like they belong.
- 47:34Speaker 6: That feels like a fish that belongs there, and what
- 47:37Speaker 6: it would be, you know, Native Americans would have been
- 47:39Speaker 6: catching it. It's hundreds of years.
- 47:40Speaker 2: It's like the one thing that I know about the
- 47:42Speaker 2: James River.
- 47:43Speaker 6: Yeah, but they grow him big over there.
- 47:46Speaker 8: They do.
- 47:46Speaker 2: I saw that they believe that blue catfish eat as
- 47:50Speaker 2: many as two point three million juvenile blue crabs a year. WHOA, Yeah,
- 47:56Speaker 2: bad news, bad news, gang, But I've got some good
- 47:59Speaker 2: news working. To recap the first nine answers here for
- 48:02Speaker 2: the listeners at home to keep score. Question one, that's
- 48:06Speaker 2: that seven letter term a gallery? Question two, water gremlin,
- 48:12Speaker 2: question three, Charles Darwin question four. Lions or African lions,
- 48:17Speaker 2: Question five, Himalayan snowcock. Question six Sonoran dog question seven,
- 48:23Speaker 2: euro nymphing Question eight, brown or grizzly bears, mountain goats
- 48:27Speaker 2: and doll sheep Question nine. Our answer was blue catfish.
- 48:31Speaker 8: Phil.
- 48:32Speaker 2: If I am not mistaken, I believe we're still tied
- 48:35Speaker 2: heading into our final question.
- 48:37Speaker 8: Here here we are.
- 48:37Speaker 9: Indeed, Randall, we've got Giannis and cow tied up with
- 48:40Speaker 9: eight points apiece, and they're the only two.
- 48:41Speaker 4: That can win the game.
- 48:42Speaker 2: My goodness, indeed, my goodness, I wonder whether we'll be
- 48:45Speaker 2: decided on this final question or by a tie breaker.
- 48:48Speaker 4: There's only one way to find out.
- 48:49Speaker 8: Let's foresee.
- 48:52Speaker 2: Question ten. What color light indicates the port side of
- 48:57Speaker 2: a vessel?
- 48:58Speaker 5: Oh?
- 49:00Speaker 2: What color light indicates the port side of a vessel?
- 49:05Speaker 2: Quick answer from Jannis Betelius.
- 49:08Speaker 4: Do you know this?
- 49:09Speaker 3: I do.
- 49:10Speaker 2: There's a little ah, Sorry for the listeners at home.
- 49:17Speaker 2: That noise was only intended to quiet.
- 49:18Speaker 6: Be honest, what did you think was going to happen there?
- 49:21Speaker 2: I was worried that he might give say something that
- 49:23Speaker 2: would stir thinking on the part of his competitors, could
- 49:30Speaker 2: jeopardize the fair outcome of this contest. There are only
- 49:35Speaker 2: so many colors, or there are many colors as you
- 49:41Speaker 2: can imagine. I think we've got answers from everybody in
- 49:45Speaker 2: the room. Let's flip those boards over.
- 49:48Speaker 8: Gang.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Tresa says red, says red, Corey says red, Spencer says red,
- 49:56Speaker 2: Cal says green, Alex says green, Revas says yellow, Yiannis
- 50:01Speaker 2: says red. We have a correct answer in the room,
- 50:05Speaker 2: and we've got two different answers between our final contestants.
- 50:08Speaker 6: Here no overtime in this game.
- 50:11Speaker 2: The correct answer is red wo. A red side light
- 50:16Speaker 2: indicates the port or left side of a vessel, while
- 50:18Speaker 2: a green sidelight indicates the starboard or right side. You
- 50:22Speaker 2: can remember which side of a vessel a red or
- 50:25Speaker 2: green light indicates with the mnemonic device.
- 50:29Speaker 8: Port wine is red, port wine is red.
- 50:32Speaker 2: You could also remember which side by saying is there
- 50:35Speaker 2: any red port left?
- 50:38Speaker 6: Is there any red port left? I could easily mess
- 50:43Speaker 6: that up, though, I'd be like, is there any red
- 50:45Speaker 6: port right there?
- 50:47Speaker 2: I hope not. I hope not. You'd have to think
- 50:50Speaker 2: about and what makes sense? Are there any red port
- 50:54Speaker 2: fans out there?
- 50:55Speaker 6: I know that left is port because they have the
- 50:57Speaker 6: same amount of letters, but I didn't know the color.
- 51:00Speaker 2: We just think red port.
- 51:02Speaker 5: I worked on a boat in New England for the
- 51:06Speaker 5: shoot a couple of weeks ago, whole week on a
- 51:09Speaker 5: big boat. People using port starboard the whole time, never
- 51:15Speaker 5: had the guts to be like which.
- 51:16Speaker 8: Ones with.
- 51:20Speaker 6: And they cost you the game.
- 51:23Speaker 8: Oh you're on the boat, you often don't see the
- 51:26Speaker 8: lights unless it's a small vessel.
- 51:27Speaker 5: No, but like everyone, it doesn't matter where you are.
- 51:31Speaker 5: Every little boat light is split between red and green,
- 51:35Speaker 5: so I knew that. But and then if you're on
- 51:39Speaker 5: the inter Coastal Waterway and the markers are red and
- 51:43Speaker 5: green too, red right returning, so anytime you're going back in.
- 51:49Speaker 2: And typically if you're approaching a vessel at night and
- 51:52Speaker 2: you see the red light, you yield to that vessel
- 51:56Speaker 2: versus the other way.
- 51:58Speaker 6: A couple of captains cutting it up.
- 52:00Speaker 2: Hey, don't don't listen to us, don't drive your boat
- 52:03Speaker 2: based on what you've heard on this Well, I am
- 52:08Speaker 2: sorely disappointed that we didn't didn't get to use my tiebreaker,
- 52:11Speaker 2: but Yannis, I'm equally thrilled that you are today's winner.
- 52:14Speaker 8: Thanks Randall.
- 52:18Speaker 9: Yeah I did?
- 52:23Speaker 8: Are you sure?
- 52:24Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure? What didn't you get?
- 52:26Speaker 6: What would you miss?
- 52:31Speaker 8: I thought there was another one.
- 52:33Speaker 4: Maybe I can believe you knew.
- 52:35Speaker 6: Chech nymphing that that was, Like I didn't know there
- 52:37Speaker 6: was another level of eu nymphing that had that.
- 52:39Speaker 8: Name only as Czech nymph.
- 52:42Speaker 5: Yeah, me too.
- 52:44Speaker 6: I start saying that like I used Arkansas. Yeah, Arkansas
- 52:47Speaker 6: to bird.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Yeah. If you say a guy's a euro nym for
- 52:52Speaker 2: it carries a certain connotation. Jannis, But tell us to
- 52:56Speaker 2: which worthy cause would you like to donate your five
- 52:59Speaker 2: hundred all our prize today?
- 53:02Speaker 8: Uh, I'm gonna stick with my go to until we
- 53:04Speaker 8: beat back this ballot initiative that looks like it's gonna
- 53:08Speaker 8: probably be on the ballot in Colorado to outlaw the
- 53:11Speaker 8: hunting of bobcats, lions, and links, which you already can't
- 53:16Speaker 8: hunt in Colorado. So we'll go to saveth hunt colorado
- 53:21Speaker 8: dot com, which is like Colorado's for responsible wildlife management.
- 53:26Speaker 8: So yeah, if you're in Colorado, remember talk to your
- 53:30Speaker 8: friends that aren't hunters, tell them, educate them. And if
- 53:34Speaker 8: you have any writing ability at all, write write a
- 53:37Speaker 8: you know, a letter to the editor or an opinion
- 53:39Speaker 8: piece to your local newspaper about it.
- 53:41Speaker 2: And if you're not a great writer but impassioned.
- 53:46Speaker 4: There you go.
- 53:47Speaker 6: Do we know what's gonna be on the ballot for sure?
- 53:50Speaker 4: We don't know for sure yet.
- 53:52Speaker 8: I think it's literally this week that we're gonna hear
- 53:55Speaker 8: whether the if those the signatures have been validated.
- 53:59Speaker 2: Yeah, they got the signatures, but they still need to
- 54:01Speaker 2: be verified.
- 54:02Speaker 8: Very questions.
- 54:04Speaker 2: Well Gang, thanks for playing today's episode of Trivia. I
- 54:07Speaker 2: hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.
- 54:08Speaker 6: Well done, Randall.
- 54:09Speaker 8: Thanks Randall.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Yes, Spencer from South Dakota. He's the host, using those smooth,
- 54:15Speaker 1: mellow tones. He lays them questions down. He likes taking
- 54:25Speaker 1: those two and three year old bucks. It is an
- 54:29Speaker 1: avid amateur
