- 0:00Welcome to Reform Thinking. I am so glad you have decided to
- 0:04join us today. We are two Protestant Christians
- 0:07and our goal here is, well, it's pretty simple.
- 0:12We want to open up the Bible and see what is actually there,
- 0:15rather than what we might assume is there.
- 0:18We do that by looking through the lens of Reformed theology
- 0:21and the Westminster Confession, which we believe helps keep us
- 0:25on the rails. It's good to be here.
- 0:27And today we are tackling a text that is, I mean, it's arguably
- 0:31one of the most familiar passages in the entire New
- 0:34Testament. I would absolutely agree with
- 0:36that if you grew up in church or even if you just went to, you
- 0:38know, vacation Bible school a couple of times as a kid.
- 0:40You know this one. It's the parable of the sower
- 0:43from Matthew, chapter 13. Oh, yeah.
- 0:44I can almost see the felt board characters in my head right now.
- 0:47You got the farmer, the little yellow seeds, the birds, the
- 0:51sun. It just feels like a children's
- 0:53story. And that's the danger with
- 0:55classics, isn't it? We stop really hearing them.
- 0:57We categorize them as simple, or maybe for the kids.
- 1:01But if we actually slow down and look at what Jesus is doing in
- 1:04Matthew 13, this isn't a sweet story about agriculture.
- 1:07No, it isn't gardening advice. It is a definitive.
- 1:10And honestly, it's a quite terrifying diagnosis of the
- 1:14human heart. Terrifying is a strong word.
- 1:16I use it intentionally. The sources we're looking at
- 1:18today make a compelling case that this parable isn't just an
- 1:22illustration, it is a judgement, and the stakes couldn't be
- 1:26higher. We aren't talking about how to
- 1:28have a better life now, we're talking about salvation.
- 1:30Right, eternal life. We are talking about the
- 1:32difference between a true faith that leads to heaven and a false
- 1:36profession that leads to destruction.
- 1:39So the mission for this discussion then, is to really
- 1:41define those spakes. Because when I read this, I see
- 1:43attention. You have the sower going out to
- 1:45sow He's throwing the seed everywhere.
- 1:47So you have the exact same gospel being preached to
- 1:49everyone. Correct the same message.
- 1:51But the results are all over the map.
- 1:53One guy hears it and yawns, another guy hears it, gets
- 1:55really excited but then quits, another gets too busy and
- 1:58another guy actually changes. Why?
- 2:01I mean, if the message is the same, why is the outcome so
- 2:03different? That is the question of the
- 2:05ages, isn't it? And the text gives us the
- 2:07answer. The variable is never the seed.
- 2:10The Word of God is constant. It is perfect.
- 2:13It has inherent life in it. The variable is always the soil.
- 2:16It's the condition of the human heart, always.
- 2:19And our thesis for this deep dive is that true participation
- 2:22in the Kingdom of God isn't defined by how you feel in a
- 2:25moment. It isn't defined by raising your
- 2:27hand or walking down an aisle. It is defined by enduring fruit
- 2:31from a regenerate heart. That's it.
- 2:33It just comes down to life. Does the seed actually produce
- 2:35life? OK, before we get into the dirt,
- 2:38literally, we need to set the scene.
- 2:40Our sources really stressed that Matthew 13 is a massive turning
- 2:43point in the Gospel of Matthew. It's a pivot.
- 2:46Where are we historically when Jesus tells this story?
- 2:49Geographically, we're at the Sea of Galilee.
- 2:51There's actually a place there that tradition calls the Bay of
- 2:54Parables. It's this natural Amphitheatre
- 2:57shape in the coastline. I've heard about this.
- 2:59Yeah, the acoustics are apparently perfect.
- 3:01You can push a boat out a little away and a person speaking from
- 3:04the water can be heard clearly by thousands of people on the
- 3:08shore, all without a microphone. So you can picture the scene,
- 3:11Jesus is in the boat bobbing on the water.
- 3:14The crowds are just packed on the beach.
- 3:16The mood isn't a picnic, it's tense.
- 3:19To understand why, you have to look at what happened just
- 3:21before this. In Matthew chapters 11 and 12,
- 3:25Jesus has been performing these incredible miracles.
- 3:28He's casting out demons. He's healing the sick.
- 3:31He is offering the Kingdom to the nation of Israel on a silver
- 3:34platter. And how did the leadership
- 3:36respond to that? Badly.
- 3:37I mean really badly. They didn't just ignore him in
- 3:39chapter 12. The Pharisees, the religious
- 3:42elite, they made a formal decision.
- 3:44They watched Jesus cast out a demon and they say he does this
- 3:48by the power of Beelzebub, the Prince of demons.
- 3:51Wait, hold on. They attributed the work of the
- 3:54Holy Spirit to the devil. They did.
- 3:56It's the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
- 3:58It was a hard, official rejection of the king.
- 4:01It was the point of no return for that generation of
- 4:04leadership. So when Jesus sits down in the
- 4:07boat in chapter 13, everything has changed.
- 4:10The offer of the Kingdom to the nation as a political entity is
- 4:14being withdrawn. He shifts his ministry style
- 4:16completely. And that shift involves
- 4:19parables. Now, I have to be honest with
- 4:20you. I grew up hearing that Jesus
- 4:23used parables to make things easier to understand.
- 4:26You know, let me tell you a story so you get it.
- 4:29Like a preacher using a sermon illustration.
- 4:31That is the common view. It's very popular, but it is,
- 4:35well, it's incorrect. How can it be incorrect?
- 4:38That seems so intuitive. Because Jesus explicitly says
- 4:40the opposite, and the disciples are confused too.
- 4:43They come to him in verse 10 and ask why do you speak to them in
- 4:46parables? Now think about that.
- 4:48If the purpose was clarity, they wouldn't have asked that
- 4:51question. No, they would have said.
- 4:52Thanks for the great illustrations.
- 4:53Right, that really cleared things up, but they're
- 4:55scratching their heads. So what does Jesus say?
- 4:57What's his answer? He says to you, It has been
- 5:00given to know the secrets of the Kingdom of heaven, but to them
- 5:03it has not been given. And then he says He speaks in
- 5:06parables so that seeing they may not see and hearing they may not
- 5:10understand. That sounds incredibly harsh.
- 5:13You're saying Jesus told stories specifically so people wouldn't
- 5:16understand him? It is a form of judgement.
- 5:18It connects directly back to Isaiah chapter 6.
- 5:20Jesus quotes the prophet Isaiah. When a people persistently
- 5:24rejects the light, God eventually gives them twilight.
- 5:27He gives them teaching that confirms their hardness.
- 5:30The parable acts as a filter. A filter?
- 5:33How so? Yes, if you have a heart that
- 5:36has been opened by God, a heart that wants to know the truth,
- 5:39the parable is a window. It opens up deep spiritual
- 5:43reality. But if your heart is hard, if
- 5:45you've already rejected him, the parable is just a confusing
- 5:48story about agriculture. It veils the truth from you.
- 5:51This brings up a theological concept that we love in the
- 5:55Reformed tradition, but it could be a hard pill to swallow given
- 5:58knowledge. It's right there in the text.
- 6:00To you it has been given. This is pure monarchism.
- 6:04Let's pause on that word, monarchism.
- 6:06Break that down for us because we use it a lot, but I want to
- 6:08make sure everyone is on the same page.
- 6:10Of course it comes from Greek. Mono means 1 and ergon means
- 6:14work, one worker. In the context of salvation or
- 6:18spiritual understanding, it means that God is the sole
- 6:21active agent in regenerating the heart.
- 6:23So we don't cooperate with him in our new birth.
- 6:25No, we don't help him do it. We are spiritually dead.
- 6:29The corpse can't help a doctor resuscitate it.
- 6:31God does the work alone. And the opposite of that would
- 6:34be synergism. Right, synergism is working
- 6:36together, but in this passage Jesus makes it so clear.
- 6:40The reason the disciples understand and the Pharisees
- 6:43don't isn't because the disciples are smarter.
- 6:45It isn't because they have higher IQ's or better moral
- 6:47character. Not at all.
- 6:49No, it is because God gave them ears to hear.
- 6:53Receptivity is a gift from God. So we're in this specific time
- 6:58period. Our sources call it the mystery
- 7:00form of the Kingdom. What does that mean for us
- 7:03sitting here today? It explains the world we live
- 7:06in. The Jews expected the Messiah to
- 7:08come crush the Romans and set up a physical throne in Jerusalem.
- 7:12Immediately they wanted a political conquest.
- 7:15But Jesus is saying no, not yet. Right?
- 7:18The King is going away and in this inter advent age that's the
- 7:22time between his first coming and his second coming.
- 7:25The Kingdom is going to advance differently.
- 7:27It's not advancing by the sword, no.
- 7:29It advances by sewing. It advances by the word of God
- 7:33entering human hearts 1 by 1. This is really, really key
- 7:37because it corrects some big errors we see in the church
- 7:39today. Like what?
- 7:41What kind of errors? Well, think about the social
- 7:43gospel, the idea that we can build the Kingdom just by fixing
- 7:47societal structures or feeding the poor.
- 7:50Now, those are good things. Christians should do them.
- 7:53But they aren't the Kingdom. They're the.
- 7:54Effects the Kingdom. Maybe.
- 7:56Or think about the Reconstructionist view, where
- 7:59some people think Christians need to take over the government
- 8:02and all the cultural institutions to bring in the
- 8:04Kingdom. You see that a lot in politics
- 8:06from different angles. You do, but this parable
- 8:09corrects that. It says the Kingdom is like a
- 8:11farmer throwing seed. It is a spiritual reality
- 8:14growing in the midst of a fallen world.
- 8:17Wheat and weeds growing together until the harvest.
- 8:20OK, so the method is sowing the seed is the word.
- 8:23Now we have to look at the target, the soil.
- 8:26Jesus gives us 4 scenarios and honestly they function like a
- 8:29mirror. We need to look into them.
- 8:30Let's look at the first one, the path.
- 8:32The text calls it the wayside. Help us visualize this.
- 8:36This isn't just a field that hasn't been plowed yet, is it?
- 8:39No, not at all. The Greek word is hodos.
- 8:42It means a road or a highway. In ancient Palestine, the fields
- 8:46were these long strips, and in between them you had these
- 8:49narrow paths where the farmers walked, where the donkeys
- 8:52walked, where the carts rolled. So it's compacted, hard packed
- 8:55Earth. It is like concrete.
- 8:57It's beaten down by years and years of traffic.
- 9:00So when the sower throws the seed and some of it lands on
- 9:02this path, what happens? It can't penetrate, it can't get
- 9:06in. It just sits there on the
- 9:07surface, exposed. So what does this represent
- 9:10spiritually? Who is the path person?
- 9:12This is the hardened heart, and I think we need to be careful
- 9:16not to just picture an angry atheist who hates God.
- 9:18That's one type, sure, but the traffic that hardens the heart
- 9:22can be many things. Our notes mentioned the traffic
- 9:25of sin. Certainly, if you live a life of
- 9:28unrepentant sin, your heart gets calloused.
- 9:31But it can also be the traffic of secular philosophy, just
- 9:33constantly absorbing the world's way of thinking until it's your
- 9:37default. And here's the scary one.
- 9:40It can be the traffic of religious traditionalism.
- 9:43That is ironic. You're saying that going to
- 9:45church can make you a path? Absolutely, 100%.
- 9:48You can sit in the Pew for 30 years.
- 9:49You know the hymns, you know the liturgy, you know all the
- 9:52jargon, but the Gospel never actually penetrates.
- 9:55You've built up a hard shell of. I know this already.
- 9:58You're not listening to be changed.
- 9:59No. You're critiquing the sermon.
- 10:01You're judging the music. You're thinking about what's for
- 10:03lunch. You are impervious.
- 10:05The text says this person hears the word but does not understand
- 10:09it. Now going back to our Greek word
- 10:12siniyami, this isn't an intelligence issue, right?
- 10:15Not at all. You can be a theologian with
- 10:17three pH DS and be the path Siniyami means to bring
- 10:21together. It implies A moral and spiritual
- 10:23alignment. It means grasping the truth as
- 10:26truth that has a claim on your life.
- 10:28So it's about reception, not just comprehension.
- 10:30Exactly the path here understands the grammar, but he
- 10:34hates the implication it connects to total depravity.
- 10:37First Corinthians 2.1 Teen The natural man does not accept the
- 10:41things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him and.
- 10:43Because the sea just sits there on the surface, exposed.
- 10:46Something happens. The birds come.
- 10:48The birds. It sounds like a nice nature
- 10:50scene, but Jesus identifies the birds explicitly.
- 10:53He says the wicked one comes Satan.
- 10:56The Greek verb here is harpaze. Tell us about that.
- 10:59Yes, and it is a violent word. It means to snatch, to seize by
- 11:03force. It's not a gentle pecking.
- 11:05It implies a sudden aggressive theft.
- 11:07This really changes how I view a Sunday morning service.
- 11:10It should. It tells us that preaching is
- 11:12spiritual warfare. When the word is opened, it is
- 11:16an invasion of enemy territory. Satan is not passive.
- 11:20He sees that seed sitting on the surface of a hard heart, and he
- 11:24knows it has power. He knows if it sits there too
- 11:27long, it might find a crack. So he sends the birds.
- 11:31And the birds are distractions, doubts.
- 11:33Distractions. Doubts.
- 11:34Sudden hostility. Pride.
- 11:36Have you ever listened to a sermon, felt a moment of real
- 11:39conviction, and then 5 minutes later you're in the parking lot
- 11:42arguing about where to go for lunch and that conviction is
- 11:45completely gone? All the time.
- 11:47More than I'd like to admit. That is the birds.
- 11:49That is the enemy snatching the Word before it can germinate.
- 11:52The pastoral warning here is severe.
- 11:55You can be around the gospel your whole life, hearing it
- 11:57every week, but if your heart is a highway, you are in grave,
- 12:02grave danger. That is the hard heart.
- 12:04Now we move to the second soil and I'll be honest, this one
- 12:07scares me. This is the rocky ground.
- 12:09The shallow heart. This is the one that looks the
- 12:10most promising at the start. It's the most deceptive.
- 12:13Let's get the geology right first.
- 12:15I used to think this meant soil that had a bunch of loose rocks
- 12:18in it. Like if you just pick the rocks
- 12:20out it would be fine soil. That's what I thought too, but
- 12:23that isn't the terrain Jesus is describing.
- 12:25In that region, you often have a solid shelf of limestone bedrock
- 12:29just below the surface, and on top of that bedrock there's a
- 12:33very thin layer of earth, maybe an inch or two deep.
- 12:36So it looks like good soil from the top, Yeah, You wouldn't know
- 12:39the rock is there. Exactly.
- 12:41You can't see the rock, so the seed falls and it sinks into
- 12:44that thin layer, and then you get what the sources call a
- 12:47hothouse effect. The sun beats down the rock
- 12:50underneath holds the heat, and the soil gets incredibly warm.
- 12:53So the sea just explodes upward. It germinates faster than all
- 12:57the other seeds. If you were walking by the field
- 12:59a week later, you look at this plant and say, wow, look at that
- 13:02one. That is the best believer in the
- 13:03bunch. So much growth, so fast.
- 13:05And Jesus uses a specific word to describe their response.
- 13:09Euphese immediately. Immediately he receives it with
- 13:13joy. We love that in our modern
- 13:15church culture, don't we? We love the immediate response,
- 13:18the tears at the altar, the emotional high, the I'm all in
- 13:21attitude on day one. We do.
- 13:23We celebrate the start, we count the decisions.
- 13:25But Jesus is warning us that we often mistake the immediacy of
- 13:29the response for the reality of the conversion.
- 13:32This soil represents the impulsive, emotional hearer,
- 13:35right? They love the idea of Jesus.
- 13:37They love the community. They love the music.
- 13:39They love the relief of forgiveness, but there is a
- 13:42fatal flaw. He has no root in himself.
- 13:44No root. That is the diagnosis.
- 13:46In theological terms, the root is vital union with Christ.
- 13:50It's regeneration. It's a new nature.
- 13:52This person has had a psychological experience, an
- 13:54emotional one. They have felt what the
- 13:57Westminster Confession calls the common operations of the Spirit.
- 14:00They have tasted the heavenly gift, but the heart of stone,
- 14:04that bedrock of their old nature underneath, was never broken up
- 14:07by God. This brings up a massive debate.
- 14:09We see in the evangelical circles the whole idea of the
- 14:12carnal Christian. The idea that you can accept
- 14:15Jesus as Savior but not as Lord. That you can be genuinely saved,
- 14:19but live a life completely indistinguishable from the
- 14:21world. Right, You hear people say,
- 14:23well, Bob got saved at youth camp 20 years ago.
- 14:25Sure, he's living with his girlfriend now.
- 14:27He's drinking too much, he never goes to church.
- 14:29But he's saved. He's just carnal.
- 14:31This parable absolutely devastates that idea.
- 14:35Look at what happens to the plant.
- 14:36It doesn't just stop growing. It doesn't just become a carnal
- 14:39plant. It Withers, it dies, it burns
- 14:42up. If the plant ties, there is no
- 14:44fruit. If there is no fruit, there was
- 14:47no life to begin with. The parable teaches that there
- 14:49is no such thing as a born again person who is permanently
- 14:52rootless and fruitless. Temporary faith is not saving
- 14:56faith. So what kills this plant?
- 14:59What exposes the lack of root? The Son, but not just any Son,
- 15:03Jesus says when tribulation or persecution arises because of
- 15:06the Word. I think that because of the word
- 15:08part is key, isn't it? It is everything.
- 15:10This isn't just general suffering.
- 15:11This isn't getting a flat tire or getting the flu.
- 15:14Unbelievers get the flu. This is suffering specifically
- 15:17because you identify with Jesus and His Word.
- 15:20So social ostracization, losing a promotion because you won't
- 15:26lie for the company, family tension over your new beliefs.
- 15:30Exactly. The sun rises.
- 15:32Now for the rooted plant, the sun is good.
- 15:34It causes photosynthesis, it helps it grow stronger.
- 15:37But for the rootless plant, the sun is fatal.
- 15:40When following Jesus starts to cost this person something real,
- 15:43they fold. The Greek word is gandalizi.
- 15:46They are scandalized, they're offended.
- 15:48They feel tricked. Wait a minute.
- 15:49I thought Jesus was going to fix my marriage and make me happy
- 15:52and successful. I didn't sign up for the cross.
- 15:54I didn't sign up to be hated by the culture.
- 15:56So they fall away. They fall away and the text
- 15:59makes it clear they didn't lose their salvation.
- 16:01They never had it. As John says in his first
- 16:03letter, Chapter 2, They went out from us, but they were not of
- 16:06us, for if they had been of us, they would have continued with
- 16:09us. Endurance is the proof.
- 16:11That is a heavy mirror to look into.
- 16:14Am I just here for the good feelings?
- 16:16Will I still be here when it gets hard?
- 16:18It is a necessary question, but now we have to move to the third
- 16:21soil, and if the rocky ground is the danger of the new convert,
- 16:25this next one is, I think, the danger of the established
- 16:30churchgoer. Soil #3 A thorny ground.
- 16:33The divided heart. Talk to us about thorns.
- 16:36Where do they come from theologically?
- 16:38They come from the curse. You have to go back to Genesis 3
- 16:41when Adam fell. God said to him, Cursed is the
- 16:43ground because of you thorns and thistles it shall bring forth
- 16:46for you. Corns are natural to the fallen
- 16:49world. You don't have to cultivate
- 16:50weeds. No, you don't have to water them
- 16:52or fertilize them. They just show up.
- 16:53They are the default state of fallen ground.
- 16:56This soil is different from the rocky ground, though, in its
- 16:58composition. Yes, this soil actually has
- 17:01depth. It is soft enough.
- 17:03The plow went deep enough so the seed gets in, It germinates.
- 17:06It puts down roots. The problem isn't lack of depth.
- 17:10The problem is that it's crowded.
- 17:12It is double planted. It's the double minded man
- 17:15trying to serve 2 masters. And Jesus names the two agents
- 17:19that kill this plant. And this is where we really need
- 17:22to pay attention, especially those of us in the West.
- 17:25The first agent is the cares of the world.
- 17:28The Greek word is marimna. Which means to be drawn in
- 17:31different directions. It's anxiety, it's distraction.
- 17:34It's the tyranny of the urgent. It is interesting that Jesus
- 17:37doesn't list, you know, big obvious sins here.
- 17:40He doesn't say heroin addiction or bank robbery jokes.
- 17:43The word he says cares. That is the trap.
- 17:46These are lawful things. Paying the mortgage, getting the
- 17:49kids to soccer practice, planning for retirement,
- 17:52managing your career. None of these things are evil in
- 17:56themselves, but when they become the dominant concern of your
- 17:58life, they become thorns. They crowd out the word.
- 18:01They take all the nutrition a plant needs, time, light and
- 18:05nutrients to grow. If your career takes 80 hours a
- 18:08week and your hobbies and entertainment take the rest, and
- 18:10your anxiety about the future takes all your mental energy,
- 18:14what is left for the word? Nothing.
- 18:16Nothing. The plant starves.
- 18:17And the second agent is even more specific.
- 18:20The deceitfulness of riches. Apatu 2 Ploto The deception of
- 18:24wealth, I want to ask you, why does Jesus call money deceitful?
- 18:29How does money lie to us? Well, it promises things it
- 18:32can't deliver. It says if you just have a
- 18:34little more of me, you will be safe.
- 18:36You'll be secure, right? You will be happy, you will be
- 18:38significant, people will respect you.
- 18:41Those are all lies. We all know people who have
- 18:44plenty of money and are miserable, anxious and deeply
- 18:47insecure. Wealth promises freedom, but it
- 18:50often brings the slavery of worrying about it.
- 18:53This feels like a direct shot at the prosperity gospel.
- 18:55It absolutely is. Think about it.
- 18:57The prosperity gospel teaches you to cultivate the thorns.
- 19:01It tells you that financial abundance is the primary sign of
- 19:04God's favor. It tells you to chase wealth and
- 19:06possessions in Jesus name. So it is telling you to water
- 19:10the very weeds that will choke your soul.
- 19:11Precisely. It is the theology of
- 19:13strangulation. It's spiritual malpractice.
- 19:15That is the mechanism, right? Strangulation.
- 19:17The Greek word is symptionary. It means to choke together.
- 19:21It is active warfare in the soil of your heart.
- 19:24The weeds are aggressive. If you do not actively weed your
- 19:28garden, if you are not ruthless with your schedule and your
- 19:31affections and your priorities, the weeds will win.
- 19:35They always win by default. And the result for this person,
- 19:39the thorny ground person. Octos unfruitful.
- 19:42And again, to be clear, unfruitful means.
- 19:44Unsaved, we have to be clear on this.
- 19:46Fruit is the only undeniable evidence of life.
- 19:50You cannot be a Christian who is so dominated by the world, by
- 19:54anxiety, by the love of money, that there is no spiritual
- 19:57fruit. You cannot serve God and Mammon.
- 20:00This is the mirror that scares me the most.
- 20:01Personally. I look at my calendar, I look at
- 20:03my budget, and I have to ask, is the word of God getting choked
- 20:06out in my own life? It is the great danger of
- 20:08affluence and comfort. We are choking on our own
- 20:11prosperity. So you have the hard heart, the
- 20:13shallow heart, and the divided heart.
- 20:15It's pretty bleak so far, but finally we get to the good soil.
- 20:18The regenerate heart, thank God. Now we need to apply our
- 20:21reformed framework here. Why is this soil good?
- 20:26Is it because this guy was just a naturally better person?
- 20:28More noble? No, that would be pelagianism.
- 20:31That would mean we have the natural ability within us to
- 20:33please God. But remember, the ground is
- 20:35cursed. The natural heart is stone.
- 20:37It's a path. It's rocky.
- 20:39It's thorny by nature. So how to get good?
- 20:42The husbandman made it good. The farmer plowed the path.
- 20:45The farmer came with a pickaxe and broke the rock.
- 20:48The farmer got on his hands and knees and pulled the thorns.
- 20:51This is the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit.
- 20:54It connects right to Ezekiel 36.26 and I will remove the
- 20:58heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh,
- 21:01yes. It is effectual calling, as the
- 21:04confession describes it. God creates the condition for
- 21:06the seed to grow, so the credit for the good soil goes entirely
- 21:09to the sower, not the dirt. But look at the description of
- 21:12this person. Jesus says he hears the word and
- 21:15understands it. We're back to that word, Sinemi,
- 21:18but here it's effectual. It's not just data entry in the
- 21:21brain, It is a synthesis of the mind and the will.
- 21:24This person hears the Gospel, understands their desperate need
- 21:27for it, and embraces it with their whole being.
- 21:30And the result is inevitable. He indeed bears fruit.
- 21:32The grammar is strong, it isn't a maybe.
- 21:35If there is life, there will be growth.
- 21:37This guards US against the other great error, anti pneumonianism.
- 21:41The idea that you can have faith without works, that you can be
- 21:43saved but not changed, no justification is by faith alone.
- 21:48But the faith that justifies is never alone.
- 21:51It always, always brings sanctification in its train.
- 21:54But Jesus adds a detail here that I find so incredibly
- 21:57comforting and pastoral. He talks about the yield, He
- 22:00says, some a hundredfold, some 60, some 30.
- 22:03I love this detail. It is a beautiful display of
- 22:05God's sovereignty in distributing gifts and
- 22:07opportunities. Because we tend to compare,
- 22:09don't we? We look at the Super Christian,
- 22:11we look at the missionary who dies a martyr or the famous
- 22:14preacher who reaches thousands, and we think that's a
- 22:15hundredfold. I'm just, I'm just a mom raising
- 22:18kids, or I'm just an accountant trying to be honest in my work,
- 22:22or I'm just suffering with a chronic illness and trying not
- 22:25to complain. That might be a thirtyfold
- 22:27yield. And Jesus calls it good soil.
- 22:29That is the point. The thirtyfold yield is genuine
- 22:32life. It is real fruit.
- 22:35It is acceptable and pleasing to God.
- 22:37The weary St. needs to hear this.
- 22:39You don't have to be the Apostle Paul, you just have to be
- 22:42faithful where God has planted you.
- 22:44That's right, the quantity of the fruit varies based on God's
- 22:47Providence and the gifts He has given you, but the quality of
- 22:50the fruit is the same. What is that quality?
- 22:52What does the shoot actually look like in a person's life?
- 22:55It looks like Galatians 5. Lovejoy, Peace, patience,
- 22:59kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
- 23:01self-control. If those things are growing in
- 23:03your life, even if it seems slow, even if you stumble, that
- 23:07is evidence that the root is real.
- 23:08So we've walked through the four soils, we have seen the path,
- 23:12the rocks, the thorns and the good ground.
- 23:14Now we need to put this all together.
- 23:16What is the big theological picture here?
- 23:18It's a picture of salvation that holds 2 critical things together
- 23:22in tension. First, it shows us that
- 23:25salvation is of the Lord. He provides the seed, He
- 23:28prepares the soil. It is his work from beginning to
- 23:31end. Monarchism.
- 23:33But it also shows human responsibility.
- 23:35It does. We are warned.
- 23:37We are told. He who has ears, let him hear.
- 23:41We are responsible for how we listen.
- 23:43We are responsible to guard our hearts against the thorns and
- 23:46the birds. And it speaks to the doctrine of
- 23:48perseverance. This is crucial.
- 23:51This parable does not teach that you can lose your salvation.
- 23:54That would contradict so much of the rest of Scripture.
- 23:57What it teaches is that in endurance is the proof of
- 23:59salvation. False starts look like real.
- 24:02Starts exactly the rocky ground looked real for a week.
- 24:05The thorny ground might have looked real for years until the
- 24:08harvest came and there was nothing on the stock, but only
- 24:11the good soil endued to the end. As the reformers used to say,
- 24:15faith that fizzles before the finish had a flaw from the
- 24:17first. That is catchy, but it stings a
- 24:19little. It is meant to sting.
- 24:21It is meant to wake us up from a false security.
- 24:23So let's use these soils as a diagnostic tool.
- 24:26Our sources suggest using them as mirrors.
- 24:28I want to hold up each mirror for our listener and for
- 24:31ourselves. Let's do it.
- 24:32OK, mirror #1 the path. Ask yourself, am I sitting here
- 24:35right now listening to this and feeling nothing but resistance?
- 24:39Am I critiquing the way the host talks?
- 24:41Am I judging the theology? Am I putting up a wall of I
- 24:44already know this? If so, realize that the birds
- 24:48are circling. The enemy wants to steal this
- 24:50truth from you right now. Mirror #2 the Rocks.
- 24:54Ask yourself, is my faith-based on an emotional experience?
- 24:59Do I live for the spiritual high?
- 25:01Did I walk an aisle years ago? But my life hasn't fundamentally
- 25:04changed. When things get hard, when my
- 25:07friends make fun of my faith, or when I lose a job, do I blame
- 25:10God and threaten to quit? Am IA fair weather Christian?
- 25:13Mirror #3 The thorns. This is the big one for most of
- 25:16us, I think. I think so too.
- 25:19Ask yourself, what am I cultivating?
- 25:21Be honest. Look at your calendar.
- 25:23Look at your bank statement. Look at your screen.
- 25:25Time is the word of God being choked out by the lawful cares
- 25:28of this life. Do I love my comfort, my career,
- 25:32my financial security more than I love Christ?
- 25:35And finally, mirror #4 the good soil.
- 25:38Ask yourself, is there fruit? Not am I perfect?
- 25:41That's the wrong question. But is there growth?
- 25:44Do I love what God loves more than I did last year?
- 25:47Do I hate my sin more than I used to?
- 25:49Is there patience where there used to be anger?
- 25:51Is there generosity where there used to be greed?
- 25:53If you see even a little bit of that 30 fold fruit, take heart.
- 25:57That is God at work in you. I.
- 25:59Have one last question. Suppose I look in the mirror and
- 26:01I see rocks or I see a massive patch of thorns.
- 26:04I realize, wow, I am joking. What do I do?
- 26:07Because we said the soil can't change itself, the dirt can't
- 26:09pick up a plow. That is the beauty of the law
- 26:12and the gospel working together. The law, this parable diagnosis
- 26:15us. It exposes our helplessness.
- 26:17It shows us we are barren. But that despair is meant to
- 26:19drive us to the sower we. Cry out to him.
- 26:22We cry out, we pray. Lord, I am rocky ground, please
- 26:25break my heart of stone. Lord, I am full of thorns.
- 26:28Please come and weed my garden. I can't do it myself.
- 26:32We appeal to the husbandmen. And we look to Christ.
- 26:34We look to Christ because ultimately He is the only true
- 26:38good soil. He's the one who obeyed the
- 26:40Father perfectly. He is the one who bore the fruit
- 26:43of righteousness for us. And notice this, He is the one
- 26:46who took the thorns. Literally.
- 26:48Literally, He wore a crown of thorns on the cross.
- 26:51He took the curse of the thorny ground upon himself so that our
- 26:55Grand could be cleared and made fruitful.
- 26:57We only bear fruit because we are grafted into Him, the true
- 27:01vine. That it's a beautiful place to
- 27:03land. It really leaves no middle
- 27:04ground, does it, This parable? None at all.
- 27:07It is fruit or fire. The King is ruling now through
- 27:10his words sown in hearts. The question is, are we
- 27:12receiving it? Here is a provocative thought to
- 27:14leave you with today. We naturally want to protect our
- 27:17thorns. They're comfortable.
- 27:19Our money, our status, our distractions.
- 27:21We like them, we tend to water them.
- 27:23But if Christ is king, he demands we weed the garden.
- 27:26The. Question left for every listener
- 27:28is this. If the master inspected your
- 27:30field today, right now, would he find a harvest or would he just
- 27:35find a really busy patch of weeds?
- 27:37Don't rest on a decision you made 20 years ago.
- 27:40Rest in the present Christ. Check your roots.
- 27:44Look for the fruit. Thanks for listening to Reform
- 27:46Thinking. Grace and peace.
- 27:47We'll see you next time.
