- 1:32we have a very special program to bring you. The title of today's
- 1:37show is Gunsmoke. But this should not be confused really with the classic western
- 1:44that gain fame over radio with William Conrad and on television with James Rness.
- 1:51You can listen to the radio version at OTR Westerns dot com hosted by Andrew
- 1:57Rhines and encourage you to do that. What we're actually playing is a concept
- 2:07or a series that was called gun Smoke. It was produced four years before
- 2:13the legendary Western began its run. The year was nineteen forty nine, and
- 2:17the hard boiled Private Eye was in vogue. And really, as was the
- 2:23case with mass media then and now, whenever anything was popular, it is
- 2:30duplicated, or to be a little less nuance, perhaps borrowed from as the
- 2:36basis of something new. We see this today, for example, when American
- 2:42Idol was a ratings hit and slowly there developed a wide variety of shows a
- 2:47similar present premises, some for singers and some extending to fashion models and even
- 2:53pet groomers. And I could probably give more examples of this trendy if it
- 2:59was pain as much attention to it. The hard Boiled Private Eye was huge,
- 3:05and there were so many different iterations. In nineteen forty nine you had
- 3:10Jeff Reagan, Sam Spade, Pat Novak, The Fat Man, Candy Manson
- 3:19in a nearly endless list of hard boiled shows. Of course, standing out
- 3:23in the midst of these could be a challenge. William Paley, the chairman
- 3:28of CBS, asked for a hard boiled Western series, a Philip Marlow of
- 3:35the Old West, and it fell to two of radio's greatest crime fighters,
- 3:39mort Fine and David Freaking to deliver, and indeed they did. With the
- 3:46today's script, Mark Dlon goes to GOAGEAI, So let's go ahead and take
- 3:51a listen. Gun Smoke, Gun Smoke. The story of the violence that
- 4:15moved westward with Young America. The story of one man who moved with it.
- 4:19Mark Gillen, United States. Marshall lives on the western plains where the
- 4:35tongue of fight and announce of brains who herds the cows as he robs the
- 4:42train and goes by the name of cow. He was part of it.
- 4:47A singing saddle bum, a cowboy had drifted. They all drifted here to
- 4:53Dodge City one time or another. It's the end of the track and the
- 4:57start of the wilderness. A dumping grin the odds and ends, beginnings,
- 5:01leftovers. It's a place to stop and take the kind of pleasure you need.
- 5:06It's a place to pass through. Sometimes it's a place to die.
- 5:13My part of it was a sunshod shack rent paid by the United States government
- 5:16and a Marshall's badge furnish free. I was at the window, watching the
- 5:21heat plump itself with Kansas dust and rolling towards the town. When the door
- 5:26opened. Your name Dylan jo in the United States marshall. She was about
- 5:30fifty hat pope, bonnet, press, gingham shoes, beaded Indian mocas.
- 5:35I heard about jew and Gaugai and said there was a steady marshal here and
- 5:41living for six months running. They've been lying to you for months. They
- 5:46say you can break a man's heart at fifty yards. I say, you
- 5:48and your gun's already done that. What's on your mind? I want you
- 5:51to saddle up and get down to Gougai. Why my husband husband owns to
- 5:57white buffalo. You let music drink, I say, the rue let tweels
- 6:00crooked. Look, ma'am, half the rule let wheels in the West are
- 6:03probably crooked, maybe, But in Gougai they kill a man for running a
- 6:08crooked wheel. Well, look, ma'am, I'm a g Contarius. That's
- 6:12my name. Yeah, Well, missus contirious, you don't need a marshal,
- 6:15You need an honest husband that t wheels no more crooked than you are.
- 6:19Wise from all I hear about you, it was I wouldn't take none
- 6:23of the money's worn from it. Oh sure, don't saw me, Marshal.
- 6:27The money don't just mean money to me. It means books for Indian
- 6:30kids, and writing stuff, slates and all. Oh missionary huh me with
- 6:35a gambler and the pilanderer and a tofa for a husband. I teach Indian
- 6:40kids. That's all he cam to behave, and a little learning, that's
- 6:43all. That's good work, ma'am. These towns could use more people like
- 6:46you. Never mind that if I don't get help, those kids will go
- 6:49back to their wild ways and I'll have a dead husband. You're coming.
- 6:54You have to ride that mule some more. Riding back to Gowgi. I'll
- 6:59be long. Make it soon, Marshall. There'll be a convulsion down there
- 7:01if you don't. It was nice when the town of Goujai came out of
- 7:06the wilderness and beckoned to me like a painted skinny hag. If Dodge said
- 7:13he had a tougher sister, this was it. I rode up to the
- 7:15white buffalo and started to time a horse to a hitching post, whittle of
- 7:19the shape of a pawny girl. When suddenly the gun in my back told
- 7:25me I wasn't alone. You won't like it here, Marshall, pretty as
- 7:29it is, you won't like it. No, no, And they don't
- 7:31turn around, Marshall. I'm shy and I'm modest, and I embarrassed.
- 7:34Easy. Isn't that so Harold? You see, Harol thinks it so.
- 7:42Harold had his tongue clipped apaches. Maybe it was too long. Oh no,
- 7:46that's not a genteel thing to say to Harold Marshall. He takes offense.
- 7:50I'm new here. Back in Dodge City, the etiquette's a little more
- 7:55formal. Then go back to Dodge. We're very happy here in Goaugai.
- 7:58Like little birds. You could spoil it. I was invited special invitation.
- 8:03Well, the party's over. No. No. Something lashed out across my
- 8:11skull. A beat of glass splitted my brain from far far away, I
- 8:16heard some words. I wanted a chill him, but I couldn't. I
- 8:22didn't know who he was. I hadn't seen his face, but I knew
- 8:26I'd never forget that voice and that crazy giggle. But I opened my eyes.
- 8:31I was in gaugaised dirt. I picked myself up and waited till the
- 8:37town stopped its dizzy dance. And a third time round I spotted a horse
- 8:41truck. I stuck my head and get rid of the blood of my face.
- 8:46I finally pushed my bones to the swinging doors of the white Buffalo.
- 8:54It was the usual kind of place, like missus Canduer has said, lad
- 8:58music drinks. I got halfway across the floor towards the bard, and I
- 9:03saw it and heard her slender hair molded black, something profane and exquisite distilled
- 9:13into her features. She looked at me, and when she spoke, it
- 9:16was as if she hadn't quit seen m Chico. Oh, a marshall,
- 9:24a marshall with a new scar and a muddy badge. You buy a drink,
- 9:31Chico, here's a buck, Buy yourself an egg? Where can I
- 9:35find the owner? Over there by the polkas table, the goatee and pompadoor.
- 9:39Thanks, yeah, but he's saying you your name cantires see, oh
- 9:50the bachelor from Dutch City. Oh you have the look at the large headaches
- 9:54And yeah, someone else besides you and your wife was expectingly. My bad.
- 10:00It wasn't good, so I see, but I'm glad you have come.
- 10:03Say marshall, look all you see my place, the white buffalo soul
- 10:09proprietor, and order me rapa el ramon Jose contuarias magnificent establishment. No,
- 10:16m looks like your magnificent establishment takes plenty for weeks. Now I'm losing money
- 10:22on the rolette wheel. Still people say this is crooked. Uh huh.
- 10:26Someone is swindling me, saying you are this someone. I swear I will
- 10:31kill dad unless you find him for me first. That is where my wife
- 10:37comes to you, ask you to come to Gauga. She had a little
- 10:41difference. She's afraid that someone might kill you. First. Oh, that
- 10:48might happen, but not so long as he can swindle me. Why kill
- 10:52the childen with the bowl and eggs and you? Well, let's have a
- 10:56look at this wheel. Ears see, wellow me well bred? Who's your
- 11:05spinner, Greg Hagen, based croupier in the territory. Uh huh. I
- 11:09suppose you'll let me look around myself as you wish, you'll find that someone
- 11:13who is swingling my wheels. I'll give it a try, mister Contarias.
- 11:24Contarias left me alone. I watched the table pro while nothing happened. Wheel
- 11:30didn't look crooked, and if it was being swindled, it was done clever.
- 11:33Finally, I moved around near the croupier Hagen. Yeah, see you
- 11:37a minute, Oh Marshall, Yeah, Bill, take over for a minute.
- 11:46Okay, Marshall, what can I do for you? This joint legitimate?
- 11:50Why ask me? Quarius n Sole proprietor? And on a rumor?
- 11:54Has it the wheels rigged? Is it? Suppose it is? Well?
- 11:58Man, and I could win. You could win two maybe twenty five percent
- 12:03of what I win, and Contarius wouldn't know. Keep talking. We both
- 12:07got to live fifty percent. Now get this, Contuarious is my friend.
- 12:13Sorry, I made a mistake. No hard feelings, plenty heart feelings.
- 12:16I think I like it better. Back at the table, look around yourself,
- 12:20make up your own mind about the wheel. So I did. Mostly
- 12:28I hung around the roulette table as far as I could see. The wheel
- 12:31was given the house and the customers an even break. Just about the time
- 12:35I started to walk away, two new players came up to the crowded table,
- 12:39one pasty face, handsome in a weak chin sort of way. The
- 12:43other a big, silent hulk of a man with a drooping lower lip.
- 12:46I didn't seem to be together or even know each other. On the next
- 12:50spin, the ball fell into twenty nine and bounced out, rolled around thirteen,
- 12:54finally settled in double are. Just as it did, Pasty Face reached
- 13:00out and put one hundred dollar bill on double Oh, Greg Hagen, the
- 13:03croupier looked up and spoke soft but fast. Sorry, mister, you placed
- 13:07your bed after the ball settled. The house can't accept it. I had
- 13:09that one hundred dollars down before you started a spind Pay me a sorry,
- 13:13mister, The house says, you take back your money. Pay me brother,
- 13:16before I make brush out of this joint. You first. Yeah,
- 13:20this man placed the bed after the ball goes Ah. He's crazy. He
- 13:22had to bet down it plenty of times. So I sorry, say you're
- 13:24the croupier is always right, Take your bill from the table, and if
- 13:30you please get out. He did fast, too fast. As he went,
- 13:39I started to remember his voice. I'd heard it before. It was
- 13:43the voice behind my back when I first hit Tom, And all of a
- 13:46sudden it made sense, and I knew I'd found out one way. The
- 13:48Spaniard was getting rooked Pasty Face on the Huk for a team. When Pasty
- 13:52Face picked up the bill, there was a blue chip under it, hunt
- 13:56double oh, and a house paid off to the Hulk, all according to
- 14:00the oil, except for one thing. The whole cat and placed any vets
- 14:03with a good stunt. There had to be more to it than that,
- 14:07So I gave Cantarrius a nod and followed Pasty Face as he left. I
- 14:11got out of the casino just in time to see him disappear around the corner.
- 14:16I took it easy for light and easy, and a bullet nubbed the
- 14:22dust at my feet. I ducked into the shutters and whipped out my guns.
- 14:24A flash had come from a narrow passageway between two buildings. I'm in
- 14:28there, Sally Marshall, come on in and get me. Wait right there,
- 14:33kid, I'm waiting. He was in there, somewhere in that long
- 14:37slab of night that was too black to see through, somewhere in there.
- 14:43I put my back against the wall and slid into it. Strike a match.
- 14:48I want to see your face when it happens to you. Try me,
- 14:54no Marshall. You shoot first, you'll miss, you know that,
- 14:58Marshall, But I won't because your gun flesh will tell me where you are.
- 15:01Real clever. That was clever what you did back at the White Buffaloes.
- 15:07Now tell me about it. You and your friend that was Harold Eh,
- 15:11a giggler with a talent for pistol. Whip him. Tell me some
- 15:13more about it. You throw down one hundred dollars built with a blue chip
- 15:18underneath it. After the ball drops it gets yourself thrown out. Harold collects
- 15:22thirty five to one. Did Harold do that? Oh? Hell? Did
- 15:26you do that? And there he was framed in the entrance of the alley.
- 15:35I was caught between them, hasty face and the mute, cold herald.
- 15:41The big guns in Harold's hands turned over and over. His face held
- 15:45all the evil in the world. You're right, Harold, take up.
- 15:52He was shooting waste tile on the wall, and it was getting close.
- 15:58There was only one thing to do, and I couldn't mess. You got,
- 16:03Harold, Masha, But you made a mistake. Your gunflesh gave your
- 16:07way. When I opened my eyes, I was in a place I'd never
- 16:22been before, kind of cottonwood clearing. I eased the wound in my shoulder
- 16:29and come across a smoldering campfire. I saw the girl full of white.
- 16:33Buffalo of a morning sun lighted up the features of a man at her feet.
- 16:38It was Signor Raffael Ramon Jose Contwie, and the bullet hole in the
- 16:45middle of his forehead gave him an extra furnish. Now it was Signor Raffael
- 16:51Ramon Jose Cantarri. As they ceased, and the police Signor Reade was singing
- 16:56a love song back to gun smoke. In just a moment. Combining modern
- 17:15detective methods with secrets of the mysterious East, the Green Lama offers CBS listeners
- 17:21a new thrill now on Sundays once he has heard of a crime or an
- 17:25injustice. Jethro Dumont, a wealthy young American just return from ten years in
- 17:29Tibet, brings in a play his quick wit and knowledge of illusion to thwart
- 17:33the evildoers. Join him Sunday as he continues his fight against crime on this
- 17:37side of the Pacific, wearing green, the color of Tibetan justice, aided
- 17:42by Tulku, his trusted lieutenant, The Green Lama is a feature presentation of
- 17:48most of these same CBS stations. Now back to Mark Dillon, United States
- 17:53Marshal and gun smoke safe around his corson. You were long, Chico without
- 18:15dreams? How do you know there were no dreams? Because I saw death
- 18:18to be a little piece of himself and then right away on a black pony.
- 18:23Yeah, I'm lucky. Who are you? How'd you get here?
- 18:26They called me Tomat. I brought you here the wagon over there on the
- 18:32borough. You are morely lucky, Chico. The bullet was for your heart,
- 18:37but it spent itself on your shoulder. It was not your time to
- 18:41die, but it was canturious time. Huh. Perhaps his grave has been
- 18:47empty too long? And you know him well? See I know him well.
- 18:53I'm to kill him. I did not kill him, Senior Contwaris was
- 18:57my protector. What did he protect you from himself? I like your much
- 19:03better when it is gentle Chico. And who did kill him? How would
- 19:08I know he was there like that? When we arrived? Why'd you bring
- 19:11me here? I like you, Chico. That's why I tell you.
- 19:17If you leave, go back to Dodge City. If you die, die
- 19:19in Dodge City. It is not good here for either one. Why didn't
- 19:25pasty face finish the job right after you were wounded? I came along.
- 19:29I persuaded him you were dead. He persuades easy. Huh, he persuades
- 19:36easy for Tomore. The shots were heard, people came, Senor. Drudo
- 19:41does not like attention, and his name is Drew? But why here?
- 19:45What did you bring me here for? I thought compliers could help you?
- 19:49After all, he was your friend. How do you know that? I
- 19:53saw you talking together in the white buffalo. But tonight, out of the
- 19:59darkness, death dons and quiet? Where is he? An tommy woman around
- 20:11the horse with you? Within an inch of your life? There? Senora,
- 20:18Hello Marshall, enjoying yourself. Get up, contarrious, get up.
- 20:23He's dead man. He shouldn't be lying there on the cold ground. I
- 20:30left him under the card. I will help you, Senora, if you
- 20:33so much as touching your care come alone. Give me that blanket, Marshal,
- 20:45you won't need it. Sure here, ma'am, you're pretty strong to
- 20:49lift him by yourself. I've done it before you hurt, Marshal. I'll
- 20:56be all right. You can come too, if you want to Marshall,
- 20:57I'll take you back to town. Yes, ma'am. I didn't think she'd
- 21:03make it, but she did. Somewhere on that long wagon ride back to
- 21:07town, she squeezed a tear onto the cheek, just one tier. But
- 21:11for missus Cantires there was a major emotion. The sun was doing its best
- 21:17to char the wood frame buildings when we hit Gaugist. All right, Marcia,
- 21:22get out of the wagon. Why bring me back to Gauchi just so
- 21:25I could pick my own gutter? That door, check door right over there,
- 21:30try it? Get up? Oh, come on, Dylan. All
- 21:38you have to do is lift your arm and knock on the door. Yeah.
- 21:45Ooh, Marshall, what's the offer this time? One hundred and fifty
- 21:51per hey get hurt? Come on in nights? Who sent you here?
- 21:59Missus Kantoy warries, Oh, I better cut away that chat. Why should
- 22:06send me here? Greg? Not need Marshall, not need at all?
- 22:12Why here? Greg? You would duck? Well, I still get some
- 22:15things. You haven't answered my question. I do things with my hand,
- 22:19Marshall, spin rolett wheels and extract bullets between spins. You would duck.
- 22:25Yeah, I'm a duck. Was had a shingle shiny one, and they
- 22:30said I couldn't have it anymore. They had a word for it, malpractice.
- 22:37They said, I did something. What are you looking at? I
- 22:41had rolett wheel on the table over there. It's a matter of Greg,
- 22:45don't you get enough practice of the white buffalo? You want this wound fixed
- 22:48or not? Yeah? Yeah, sure, said Greg. Yeah. I
- 22:57once heard about a croupier enough to spin a wheel and drop a ball into
- 23:02any slot he wanted. Hit it about once out of five times, not
- 23:07bed once in four is better? What about him? I could mention it
- 23:11to missus Contareous, round up you and Drew and go back to Dodge City.
- 23:17Rue, pasty faced guy, the guy who pulled a fast trick with
- 23:21a chip and one hundred dollars bill last night. I didn't know I refused
- 23:25the bet, didn't I. Yeah, that's what doesn't fit. I'd stop
- 23:29worrying about it. If I were you, Marshall, I could keep this
- 23:33wound open and let it bleed. And the other hand, you could take
- 23:36the bullet out. Yeah. I could do that, and I'd owe you
- 23:41something I wouldn't have to remember you, Missus Contarious. It's like this Marshall.
- 23:48First, I just wanted to tame the wheel. Ben it got out
- 23:52of hand, Tam, I have anything to do with it getting out of
- 23:53hand. What do you know about. I'm ready to take the bullet out
- 24:00of Marshal. You're going to keep what you know to yourself? Take the
- 24:03bullet out. Oh bite my lip? Yeah, do that, Marshall.
- 24:07It's a nice pose. I bit my lip. But all I got was
- 24:14pain in my mouth. I didn't need that. There was enough pain.
- 24:18There was enough pain that was painted in red, and it couldn't decide whether
- 24:21it was a flame or an icicle. When I woke up, Greg was
- 24:26talking to someone. It didn't take long to recognize the voice. You should
- 24:32have let him die, Chic. You will only cast trup. He's got
- 24:33nothing on me. Only trouble I got is you every man in town.
- 24:40You couldn't even leave the Marshal alone. Come, yeah, you're christ I
- 24:42found the Marshall in the cotton with clearing, like I told you it was
- 24:45there when I came. Yeah, keeping you a little rundever with Cantorius.
- 24:51I warned you tomorrow. I told you if I ever caught you with Contarrious
- 24:53again, I'd kill him, and I did. I'm sorry I heard you
- 24:57say that. Greg. Don't be sorry. Just leave town. I couldn't
- 25:04let you die, Marshall. I'm gonna take you Greg, but first I'm
- 25:07gonna give you some advice. Yeah, get rid of tomorrow. One of
- 25:12his stories is bad, either the one she told you or the one she
- 25:15told me. She told me she brought me to the Cottonwood clearing persuaded Drew
- 25:19that I was dead. If that's true, then it follows that Drew's cutting
- 25:22your time, the same as contware as was. You can't kill everybody.
- 25:26Tomorrow takes up with the Marshall talking through his wound. Tomorrow. He's delirious.
- 25:32He's lying, Greg. I found him in the clearing as I told
- 25:33you. Well, Greg, who do you believe me? Or tomorrow?
- 25:38Get out, Marshall, Get out and leave town. Can't Greg, not
- 25:42yet. Gotta take you. Also, there's a personal matter to attend.
- 25:45I could have let you die, Marshall. Remember, Yeah, I'll testify
- 25:49at your trial killing Greg. Kill now shut up? You know tomorrow you
- 25:56got too many friends. Everything he says is a lie. Maybe we'll stay
- 26:03one more night in Galgai, Just one more night. That's all. We'll
- 26:08need. No good Greg. I'll have to take you with your shooting nominous
- 26:12sling. I don't think so. I'll gamble on a Greg want odds.
- 26:19I got up and left Greg's shack. He didn't try to stop me one
- 26:23thing about Greg. He wasn't afraid of me or anybody else. I went
- 26:30back to the White Buffalo and waited. About an hour later, Missus Cantuarreus
- 26:34drove up. She was wearing black. She just come from her husband's funeral.
- 26:41Send me your good arm, Marshall. I do want to rip his
- 26:44dress, yes, ma'am. Hey was it a nice funeral? Man,
- 26:51Yes, Marshall. The kids behaved real nice. You've done a good job
- 26:55on him. Man. Thanks, Come in and have a drink, Marshall,
- 26:59you look. I followed her under the casino, then an hour began
- 27:03to fill up. I hid myself behind the stairs, but I had a
- 27:07clear view of the roulette table and waited. About eight Tamar walked through the
- 27:12door. Tamar in a dress of red, Tamar buckled with silver. She
- 27:18strolled over to the table and put some chips on the black as Gregg's fun
- 27:22There was no sign of recognition between them. Seven black, seven pays black,
- 27:27pays plac your bets. On the next spin, Tamarrow won again.
- 27:30Then she lost. She doubled her bets and one more times than she lost.
- 27:36After a while, she stopped playing colors and switched to single numbers thirty
- 27:40five to one. She kept on winning, but one out of four.
- 27:44Like Greg said, in an hour, there was roughly twenty thousand dollars stacked
- 27:48in front of her. Just before she bet number thirteen, I saw Greg
- 27:52hold his thumb under his palm and rubbed the side of his face. Thirteen
- 27:57black, thirteen pays black. Pasye lucky. You're very lucky tonight, Tama,
- 28:03tonight, Senora. But I'm always lucky at your tables. No,
- 28:08not as lucky as tonight. Sorry, man, this is a private table
- 28:12from now on. You can all move to the second. We're right over
- 28:15there. Private table, Senora, Yes, just you and this gentleman,
- 28:26a man abigail thumbdad over his shoulder was mister Drew in person. I put
- 28:30my good hand on my gun and prepared to finish my unfinished business, and
- 28:36I decided to wait for the piece to play itself out. I didn't know
- 28:38what missus Cantwarre has had in mind, but this show was too good to
- 28:41spoil, Tamar, Greg and Drew, I don't know. This is my
- 28:48last spin, that's all right, Tamar Our mister Drew. Once is just
- 28:53one spin, right, mister Drew. Eh, guys, one spin with
- 29:00the little lady. But I missed it, true, Yeah, but I
- 29:03do not feel like better. We will spin once more when no all of
- 29:11my chips on number one, number one, eh, and that's a good
- 29:19number number one. I'll take ten thousand in gold and number one three red,
- 29:33three pays, Red pays. Craig didn't have a chance. The knife
- 29:45he tried to draw his hammered back by the bullets that tore through his hand
- 29:48and across his chest. Suddenly, his face changed. He looked young and
- 29:52hurt and ashamed of the blood that he couldn't hold back. It'll make me
- 29:56happy if no one tries to follow us. Let's go tomorrow. He held
- 30:00his guns like there were dogs on a leash that could snap easy. He
- 30:03waited for tomorrow to scoop up the money, and they backed out of the
- 30:07casino. You'll let him get away, Marssel. I don't think so,
- 30:15ma'am. He knows I'll come and get him. He'll be waiting for me.
- 30:18He'll be wanting to finish me off if he can, and I'm gonna
- 30:22give him his chance. I figured there was only one place to look,
- 30:30and there they were, resting easy in the cottonwood clearing. I knew you'd
- 30:37have to come after me. Marshall. You're funnier than an actor. I
- 30:41saw one once in Dodge. You're funnier. Maybe a laugh too easy,
- 30:48drove like it killed too easy. Yeah, Marshall with a gun. I'm
- 30:52on a sling chase and a killer. Go away, Marshall, Go away
- 30:56while there's still time. I got nothing but time. I'll wait. You're
- 31:02wrong, my should You've got no time at all? Yeah, Chico,
- 31:15Chico this. I do not believe. It is impossible that someone could shoot
- 31:21faster than senior droop and when your left hand, Oh Chico, you are
- 31:26so very quick with your gun. I like that about him. Man,
- 31:30take it easy tomorrow, come on, let's go go not No, Marshall,
- 31:37there's time. Sit here, sit here next to them like this.
- 31:44M see you know what I think. Don't talk now. I think you
- 31:51had a great thing with Greg. You could put that ball in any number
- 31:53you bet, only that wasn't enough for you. But it doesn't matter now,
- 31:57Darling. You thought you could double your profits by thrown in Withdrew.
- 32:00Maybe you were going to double cross him too, I don't know. Don't
- 32:02worry about it, Chico. The money is yours too. It belongs to
- 32:06missus cantireus. That's who's gonna get it. What what are you talking about?
- 32:10Take your choice. Come back with me to the jail in Gaugai,
- 32:14or I'll turn you over to missus cantyas I don't think she could stand having
- 32:19you alive. You this is the first time I've ever held a gun on
- 32:25a woman. Surely, surely you are playing with me. You're an accessorate
- 32:30a murder. Tomorrow we go away together, You and I Mako New Orleans.
- 32:35Listen to me, Chico, You and I let's go tomorrow. Listen.
- 32:38Listen to me. There's plenty money yours and mine. Listen to She
- 32:45put her arms around my neck and her lips close to my ear. And
- 32:49for a long time, for a long long time, first in English and
- 32:53in Spanish, then in Cherokee, then in a language I couldn't recognize.
- 32:59She whispered at me, me every foul name in the book. She was
- 33:02talented. She didn't repeat herself once, Tamar, I didn't understand that a
- 33:07marshall had a job to do, and that the job got done. On
- 33:22my way back to Dodge, I came across a cottonwood clearing i'd never noticed
- 33:24before. I rode down into it. A small animal scurried off a log
- 33:30and lost itself in the shadows. And I was alone for a time after
- 33:35that. For a long time after that, I thought about tomorrow. He'd
- 33:42given her her guitar, but I knew she wouldn't be singing much longer.
- 33:52The rest of the way home, the country was dust got inside of my
- 33:57mouth. Mid stayed there Welcome back. Well. As interesting as this was
- 34:19as a concept, I think the problem in execution is that even though the
- 34:24program was set in the nineteenth century, you know, it's still had a
- 34:32very much a nineteen forties feel to it. But I think you can't just
- 34:42take a Private Eye script and write in a few Western setting pieces and make
- 34:49it work, which is basically what was done here. This was taken from
- 34:52an episode of Michael Shane called The Crooked Wheel. Not a bad performance though,
- 34:59but I understand why it wasn't picked up. They ended up doing a
- 35:02much more straightforward Western audition, only to find out that they could not get
- 35:12the actor who would start in the second pilot, and then eventually the name
- 35:19was taken over by Norm MacDonald and John Meston, who made it into gun
- 35:24Smoke in the legendary series that it became all right, well, that will
- 35:32actually do it for today. We will be back tomorrow with an episode of
- 35:38Nick Carter and next Wednesday, yours truly, Johnny Dollar resumes. I do
- 35:44want to once again encourage you. If you want to hear more of the
- 35:46actual gun Smoke, go to OTR Westerns dot com Andrew rys is up to
