- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome in to jag Zam. I'm Kayannie Stevens. Are in
- 0:18Speaker 1: the month of April. Now free agency is behind us,
- 0:20Speaker 1: so now we're looking ahead to the twenty twenty four
- 0:23Speaker 1: NFL Draft. Now, Brian Sexson is off today John Oser
- 0:26Speaker 1: is back with me here in studio. We're going to
- 0:27Speaker 1: do a deep dive as we start looking into potential
- 0:29Speaker 1: draft picks who may be coming to town and positions
- 0:32Speaker 1: of interest. Our big thing, number one is twenty three days,
- 0:35Speaker 1: because there's twenty three days until the first day of
- 0:38Speaker 1: the NFL Draft. Now, a lot of US preps started
- 0:40Speaker 1: months and months ago, but John, they're still looking into
- 0:43Speaker 1: things right now. Talking to people. How much of this
- 0:46Speaker 1: is set in stone at this point or is they're
- 0:47Speaker 1: still room to move about who they're looking at.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Well, I think their thoughts and their research on guys
- 0:55Speaker 2: is mostly set in stone. You're doing sort of punch
- 0:59Speaker 2: out work now, if you will, still setting the board.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Once they set that board, it's pretty much set in stone.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I think that's a couple of weeks down the road.
- 1:07Speaker 2: The work actually started for a lot of these guys
- 1:10Speaker 2: year year and a half ago. The area of scouts
- 1:13Speaker 2: actually are already looking ahead to next year's draft, most
- 1:16Speaker 2: likely with the setting of the board being done by
- 1:22Speaker 2: sort of the upper level guys, Trent Balke and his posse,
- 1:25Speaker 2: if you will.
- 1:26Speaker 1: The posse is getting all in on the big board,
- 1:28Speaker 1: so we'll have more on that as the week's come along,
- 1:30Speaker 1: and we'll talk a little bit more about prospects later
- 1:32Speaker 1: in the show. We do want to talk about our
- 1:34Speaker 1: second big thing, though, which is an extension for Foya
- 1:36Speaker 1: Lewis and the linebacker captain of this team. Last year
- 1:39Speaker 1: was on the final year of a three year deal,
- 1:41Speaker 1: but now we've seen a contract extension for him. John
- 1:44Speaker 1: This was something we weren't really sure he had a
- 1:46Speaker 1: big cap number this year, but now he's going to
- 1:48Speaker 1: be around for a bit longer.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it's credit to him.
- 1:52Speaker 2: A couple of free agents from the twenty twenty one
- 1:55Speaker 2: class seman line to do this.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Christian kirk Is the other guy comes in mind. This
- 1:59Speaker 3: might be down the road.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Usually players who sign big free agent contracts are two
- 2:07Speaker 2: or three year players and don't really become part of
- 2:10Speaker 2: your core. The Air exceptions to that, but that's sort
- 2:13Speaker 2: of the norm. Foya Lucan led the league and tackled
- 2:16Speaker 2: his first year with the Jags twenty twenty two, came
- 2:19Speaker 2: close again last year, solid player, became a little more
- 2:22Speaker 2: of a turnover guy last year. So he's locked up.
- 2:26Speaker 2: He's part of the core of this team. And credit
- 2:29Speaker 2: to him again, because that doesn't always happen with second
- 2:33Speaker 2: contract free agents on new teams. He's now a Jaguar,
- 2:37Speaker 2: I want to say for life, but for the long
- 2:39Speaker 2: term doesn't always happen.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Is this extension due to just what the performances we've
- 2:44Speaker 1: seen on the field, or is it a bit of
- 2:45Speaker 1: an indictment against those two other guys that they drafted
- 2:48Speaker 1: just a year ago.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I don't think as much to do with Devin Lloyd.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Perhaps Chad Muma. They may have.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Looked at him as a possible replacement when they drafted
- 2:59Speaker 2: him in twenty twenty two. I think the year was
- 3:02Speaker 2: it all runs together. At my age, Ventrel Miller last
- 3:05Speaker 2: year when he was drafted seemed like a guy who
- 3:08Speaker 2: might be an inside back or starter at some point.
- 3:11Speaker 3: And totally get on the field.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Last year at all, he was hurt, so I think
- 3:14Speaker 2: the circumstance and injury maybe more than an indictment.
- 3:19Speaker 1: All right, freeze up some money and he'll be here
- 3:21Speaker 1: to stay. So that's good leadership to have on this team.
- 3:23Speaker 1: But speaking of that extension, there's another extension or new
- 3:26Speaker 1: contract that hasn't gotten done a waiting game. We're still
- 3:29Speaker 1: waiting on Josh Allen. And now with those twenty three
- 3:31Speaker 1: days until the draft, John, we've talked about hoping this
- 3:34Speaker 1: deal gets done before the draft. Is that still the
- 3:36Speaker 1: plan or is this going to be something that dragged
- 3:38Speaker 1: out even further.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not sure there's that much.
- 3:41Speaker 2: You know, My experience with these is usually deadlines create deals.
- 3:46Speaker 2: I don't know that there's that much of a deadline
- 3:49Speaker 2: before the draft because they've already gotten through the league year,
- 3:52Speaker 2: so they're cap they're not trying to get under anything
- 3:55Speaker 2: in any sort of deadline like that. The deadline or
- 3:58Speaker 2: the pressure points might be more when they want to
- 4:01Speaker 2: sign the rookie class or get other deals done that
- 4:05Speaker 2: might prompt Josh. I don't know that the April twenty
- 4:08Speaker 2: fifth start of the draft is a magic deadline beyond
- 4:11Speaker 2: the fact that I think they'd like to get this
- 4:13Speaker 2: done and get it in order and sort of know
- 4:15Speaker 2: what these numbers are gonna look like. To me, the
- 4:18Speaker 2: two numbers that might matter the most for the next
- 4:20Speaker 2: five years, Josh's contract, in Trevor's contract. When it happens,
- 4:25Speaker 2: those will sort of set the template to the tent poles,
- 4:28Speaker 2: if you will.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Everything else we worked around.
- 4:30Speaker 2: That when they're that big, and that perhaps even unusual
- 4:34Speaker 2: trying to get certain numbers in certain years. Sometimes you
- 4:38Speaker 2: want to get that done before you start doing other things.
- 4:41Speaker 2: So I think it gets done before July fifteenth. Don't
- 4:44Speaker 2: really have a feel for any date beyond that with
- 4:47Speaker 2: Josh Allen.
- 4:48Speaker 1: All right, Josh Allen Contract Watch continues. We'll keep you
- 4:50Speaker 1: an eye on that, keep you posted.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Of course.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Coming up after the break, we're going to look at
- 4:54Speaker 1: some of the cornerback prospects for this year's draft and
- 4:57Speaker 1: who the Jags might be targeting.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Move the Freight, Move the Freight.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Magellan Transportation voted coolest office space in Jacksonville. You can
- 5:13Speaker 1: apply online at www. Dot Magellan Logistics dot com. Welcome
- 5:19Speaker 1: back to jag zam here in the Hyundai studios, Kan
- 5:21Speaker 1: Nannie Stevens, Brian Sexton not with us. We'll be back
- 5:24Speaker 1: next week. But John Osier is back in studio, and
- 5:26Speaker 1: that's really all we need this time in the year, John,
- 5:28Speaker 1: thank you for joining us.
- 5:30Speaker 3: No problem, it.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Is sor all you need anyway, it's all we need.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Were worth.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Let's talk draft.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Let's talk draft because we're gonna dive into this for
- 5:38Speaker 1: the next few weeks pretty much as we all try
- 5:40Speaker 1: to guess what's gonna go down and probably get it very,
- 5:42Speaker 1: very wrong. But we're gonna start with cornerbacks because that's
- 5:45Speaker 1: a position we've talked about obviously, that's a skill position
- 5:48Speaker 1: that you really only see maybe you know, a starting
- 5:50Speaker 1: cornerback in the first round less she gets super lucky
- 5:52Speaker 1: after the fact. So we're gonna look at some of
- 5:55Speaker 1: the picks that we have not necessarily mocked to us,
- 5:58Speaker 1: but you know, just kind of the top availability in
- 6:02Speaker 1: the cornerback class this year.
- 6:03Speaker 2: So well, first of all, on corner I think it's
- 6:08Speaker 2: if you had to pick a position right now that
- 6:11Speaker 2: makes the most sense for him, it feels like corners.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Yet I know O lot of people are saying wide receiver,
- 6:15Speaker 2: the people are saying offensive line corner.
- 6:17Speaker 3: To me, it still feels like.
- 6:21Speaker 2: They might not only take one in the first round,
- 6:23Speaker 2: but might take one somewhere again.
- 6:26Speaker 3: By Dave, I mean not.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I say by day four, by round four, it feels
- 6:32Speaker 2: like the biggest need, and it is a spot historically.
- 6:35Speaker 2: The good news on that to me, sometimes offensive linemen
- 6:39Speaker 2: can need more time, their certain positions need more time.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Corner is a position where guys can often come in
- 6:44Speaker 2: and be who they are right away.
- 6:46Speaker 3: So it's good.
- 6:47Speaker 1: It's a young man's position, right as we always say,
- 6:49Speaker 1: so it's good to get some young blood in here.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Quinyan and Mitchell is the guy from Toledo, which you
- 6:53Speaker 1: don't se see a lot of Matt Conference guys necessarily,
- 6:56Speaker 1: but that's someone where we're looking at. I don't know,
- 7:00Speaker 1: fall to seventeen, it might be something where you needed
- 7:03Speaker 1: to trade up. But he's kind of the CB one,
- 7:05Speaker 1: if you will, starting out of this class.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Yeah, and came out of nowhere a little bit, has
- 7:09Speaker 2: had a really good off season. He's a guy off
- 7:12Speaker 2: So when you go to Toledo, people come in with questions.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Everything you hear is that he's answered all those questions.
- 7:18Speaker 2: In terms of the draft, seems right now like it
- 7:21Speaker 2: might be a little surprising if he's there at seventeen.
- 7:25Speaker 2: You sort of mentioned during the break trading up. Boy,
- 7:29Speaker 2: I'd be surprised. If they trade up for a corner,
- 7:32Speaker 2: mainly because there's so many sitting there sort of in
- 7:34Speaker 2: the sweet in the sweet spot of number seventeen, So
- 7:38Speaker 2: I'm not sure there would be a trade up, But
- 7:42Speaker 2: if you love a guy.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Go get him fair.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Cooper de John's probably one of the more versatile corners
- 7:48Speaker 1: coming out of Iowa. He's someone that I think people
- 7:51Speaker 1: think they could probably use in a multitude of ways.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Maybe safety as well, but just that versatility. That's something
- 7:57Speaker 1: we know. Trent Bulke likes a versatile player. But is
- 8:00Speaker 1: that someone that you could see in the system or
- 8:02Speaker 1: do you think maybe not.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Caitlin Clark's off the board here, so.
- 8:06Speaker 1: She's too expensive.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, for what they need, versatility makes sense.
- 8:15Speaker 2: The interesting at corner, you feel like Darby, who they've signed,
- 8:18Speaker 2: Ronald Darby and Tyson Campbell are probably their outside corners
- 8:22Speaker 2: next year, possibly wanting to play inside, but it.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Would be interesting.
- 8:28Speaker 2: The challenge for them, I think is trying to get
- 8:30Speaker 2: a guy who can be a long term outside corner
- 8:34Speaker 2: and play Nickel early. Cooper Jjohn with his versatility, could
- 8:40Speaker 2: fit that. Again, it sort of feels like you may
- 8:42Speaker 2: have to go up and get him at this point.
- 8:45Speaker 1: So.
- 8:47Speaker 3: He makes sense.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Don't know that he'd be available when they're picking, but
- 8:51Speaker 2: I think that versatility makes a lot of sense for him.
- 8:53Speaker 1: All right, let's go over those two Alabama guys, Terry Arnold,
- 8:56Speaker 1: Koley McKinstry one of those getting mocked to the Jaguars
- 8:59Speaker 1: quently that you've been seeing.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah, Terry and Arnold has been mocked a lot. Kool
- 9:04Speaker 2: Aid I don't know as much about. I haven't studied
- 9:06Speaker 2: him quite as much. Terry and Arnold seems like the
- 9:09Speaker 2: guy right now that people think will be available with
- 9:13Speaker 2: fill in need. You know, there are people It's an
- 9:17Speaker 2: interesting draft class for many positions with cornerby and one
- 9:21Speaker 2: of them where there's so many guys that it might
- 9:25Speaker 2: be a matter of how you think a guy fits
- 9:28Speaker 2: rather than oh they didn't go get the quote best guy. Well,
- 9:31Speaker 2: there is a school thought here you can go get
- 9:34Speaker 2: the best guy for what you need. With Terran and
- 9:40Speaker 2: other players, there are people who think he might be
- 9:42Speaker 2: the best corner in the draft, even though he's only
- 9:45Speaker 2: ranked third or fourth right now. So it sounds like
- 9:49Speaker 2: he's a fit. It sounds like he's a guy who
- 9:52Speaker 2: would work him and be available. I've probably seen him
- 9:55Speaker 2: mocked more to the Jaguars than any other player.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Maybe in the last two or three weeks, which means
- 10:00Speaker 3: means nothing.
- 10:01Speaker 1: That means we're not going to get him.
- 10:02Speaker 3: That's probably means nothing, probably what it means.
- 10:05Speaker 1: And then finally we'll look at Clemson product Nate Wiggins.
- 10:08Speaker 1: We've seen him kind of move up and down a
- 10:10Speaker 1: little bit. Is he someone that would fit the system
- 10:12Speaker 1: as well?
- 10:13Speaker 3: Or well, good, good, good player.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Uh again, I have not sit here and poured through
- 10:20Speaker 2: tape on on Nate Wiggins or any of these guys,
- 10:23Speaker 2: but from what you hear, the size you even see
- 10:27Speaker 2: right there.
- 10:29Speaker 3: I never want to call an NFL player frail because
- 10:31Speaker 3: it's not that, but his size and frame.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Would it's going to scare some teams, and you wonder
- 10:41Speaker 2: if he fits When this team is getting ready to
- 10:44Speaker 2: move to an aggressive man, demand guard the short pass,
- 10:48Speaker 2: be physical, you wonder if that fits what they.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Want to do.
- 10:53Speaker 2: If he's the guy there, there's fit. And then there's
- 10:58Speaker 2: also the case of well, you don't want to pay
- 11:00Speaker 2: us on good players. So not ruling Nate Wagans out,
- 11:02Speaker 2: but the frame is what you hear pundits talk about
- 11:06Speaker 2: with Nate Wagans and the Jags.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Very good. Those are the top five we've got for cornerbacks.
- 11:10Speaker 1: We're going to be looking at different positions the next
- 11:12Speaker 1: coming weeks. We'll look at a different position group and
- 11:14Speaker 1: what we think the Jags are going to be looking
- 11:16Speaker 1: at and the top prospects for that.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Stay with us though.
- 11:18Speaker 1: We've got Ozone mail bag questions for you after the break.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Jaguars fans guro up at fanatics dot com with all
- 11:30Speaker 1: the latest styles. Shop now and get today's special offer.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Fanatics dot Com officially licensed everything. Please God, welcome back
- 11:45Speaker 1: to jag Zam. Ozone is back with us, so we're celebrating.
- 11:48Speaker 1: We're do some ozone mail bag questions because John we
- 11:52Speaker 1: need your answers on all of the things.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Well, yes, uh, I guess you did, Yes we do.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Our first question is about the offensive line. There's been
- 12:02Speaker 1: a lot of changes to that from what we've seen
- 12:04Speaker 1: so far. So Daniel from Johnston, Iowa wants to know
- 12:07Speaker 1: a lot of iowant today. Are you satisfied with the
- 12:10Speaker 1: efforts made on fixing the O line thus far? He says,
- 12:13Speaker 1: not convinced yet.
- 12:14Speaker 2: I'm not satisfied or unsatisfied. I guess I wasn't sure
- 12:19Speaker 2: what to expect. I thought that going into the off season,
- 12:25Speaker 2: I thought that they might move on from Brandon Sheriff.
- 12:28Speaker 2: He his salary cap. That's the one thing that didn't
- 12:32Speaker 2: happen that I thought might happen. So I don't know
- 12:37Speaker 2: necessarily that they think they should have because he's a
- 12:40Speaker 2: good veteran player. I don't know that he's in the
- 12:42Speaker 2: prime of his career anymore, but he certainly you can
- 12:45Speaker 2: get by with good veteran guards you know how to play,
- 12:48Speaker 2: and he does. Beyond that, they resigned, I mean, they
- 12:52Speaker 2: signed Mitch Morse, they resigned Ezra Cleveland. And I think
- 12:55Speaker 2: the important thing to remember about Ezra Cleveland. Everybody wants
- 12:59Speaker 2: to look at at what the Jaguars didn't say, Well,
- 13:02Speaker 2: they only did one thing.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Well, I don't know that we actually saw.
- 13:06Speaker 2: What Ezra Cleveland can really bring. Last year he played
- 13:10Speaker 2: five games. It never felt like he got in and
- 13:14Speaker 2: got into a rhythm. He was in and out of
- 13:16Speaker 2: the lineup.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Not his fault at all.
- 13:19Speaker 2: So there thought clearly is Cameraroms can go into his
- 13:24Speaker 2: eighth year.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Brandon Sheriff going.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Into his tenth, Mitch Morse going into his tenth, and.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Ezra Cleveland I believe going into his fifth or sixth.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Fifth, maybe well the left side of that or the
- 13:40Speaker 2: first three guys I mentioned. That's a little old for
- 13:42Speaker 2: my taste, but they clearly look at it and say
- 13:45Speaker 2: we can get there. This is a veteran line who
- 13:48Speaker 2: knows what they're doing. They believe that there will be
- 13:52Speaker 2: continuity there. Age makes me wonder about the continuity. I
- 13:56Speaker 2: think that's the risk in the continuity card. But you
- 13:59Speaker 2: have to believe in something right now. They believe in
- 14:02Speaker 2: continuity veteran that this bunch can go do it. To
- 14:05Speaker 2: their credit, they also have some depth. They have Walker
- 14:08Speaker 2: Little there. You believe they'll have Luke Fortner. I also
- 14:15Speaker 2: think that somewhere on the first two days of the draft,
- 14:19Speaker 2: I think you could see this position to dress to
- 14:21Speaker 2: get younger because Cam and Walker Little both in their
- 14:24Speaker 2: last year of their contract, and with Morrison Sheriff being
- 14:27Speaker 2: tenth of your guys, they need to draft and get
- 14:30Speaker 2: younger behind this now. But if they say healthy, it
- 14:34Speaker 2: can work. I think that's the big key. Can an
- 14:37Speaker 2: older line that hasn't been healthy in the last couple
- 14:39Speaker 2: of seasons, stay healthy. To me, that's the storyline to
- 14:42Speaker 2: wash the offensive.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Line, health will certainly be an issue. We saw a
- 14:44Speaker 1: lot of different lineups last year, so hopefully we can
- 14:47Speaker 1: avoid that this season. Second question we have for you
- 14:50Speaker 1: here today is going to be about two of the
- 14:52Speaker 1: defensive backs because we were just talking about cornerback. But
- 14:55Speaker 1: would you offer an extension to safety Andre Cisco or
- 14:57Speaker 1: cornerback Tyson Campbell this offseason to void an inflated number
- 15:01Speaker 1: after a possible Pro Bowl season this year?
- 15:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think you can. I like both guys
- 15:06Speaker 3: a lot.
- 15:07Speaker 2: I mean, I'm pulling form to be core NFL players
- 15:12Speaker 2: that you pay. I think they have the potential to
- 15:16Speaker 2: be that, because I am I. I think they have
- 15:19Speaker 2: the potential to be that. I don't know that they've
- 15:22Speaker 2: shown enough of that yet to go sign them to
- 15:25Speaker 2: long term deals.
- 15:25Speaker 1: And they may not want that yet because you want
- 15:27Speaker 1: to prove yourself. You want to have a great season
- 15:28Speaker 1: before you sign that long term deal, because you might
- 15:30Speaker 1: not get that money that you're expecting. I think if
- 15:33Speaker 1: they were to give them an offer, it's probably not
- 15:34Speaker 1: going to be the money of them would want right now.
- 15:36Speaker 3: And that's what they ran into.
- 15:37Speaker 2: If you remember with Josh Allen last year, Yep, Jaywarsy've
- 15:40Speaker 2: got a lot of criticism for not signing Josh to
- 15:44Speaker 2: a long term deal when the bargain was there, when
- 15:48Speaker 2: you or when it was affordable. I never got the
- 15:51Speaker 2: idea at all ever, talking to Josh that he thought
- 15:55Speaker 2: that he had earned the long term deal that he
- 15:58Speaker 2: believed he was capable of, if that makes sense.
- 16:02Speaker 3: I believe he knew he.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Was worth it, but also from a league point of view,
- 16:06Speaker 2: he hadn't shown that, so there was no way that
- 16:08Speaker 2: was going to get done before this offseason. I kind
- 16:11Speaker 2: of feel like to a lesser degree, Cisco and Campbell
- 16:15Speaker 2: I don't think. I'm not sure that they are players
- 16:19Speaker 2: who will reach Josh's level at his position, But even so,
- 16:23Speaker 2: I don't think there's any rush to do it, and frankly,
- 16:26Speaker 2: I think it'd be a risk to do it at
- 16:28Speaker 2: this point, and I would be surprised if it was
- 16:30Speaker 2: on the table.
- 16:31Speaker 1: I don't think it is on the table. I think
- 16:32Speaker 1: that's definitely something they'll look at next year, and I
- 16:34Speaker 1: would imagine they would want to play a full, healthy
- 16:36Speaker 1: season both of those players to hopefully get their highest value.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Our final question today for the Ozone Nail Guy is
- 16:43Speaker 1: coming from Art in New Jersey says, I think the
- 16:45Speaker 1: new kickoff rules will be fun. Do you think they
- 16:47Speaker 1: will lead to more running backs returning kicks?
- 16:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:53Speaker 2: My first thing was to say no because of the
- 16:55Speaker 2: injury factor, and then I sort of rethought it a
- 16:57Speaker 2: little bit and read a little bit more about it,
- 16:59Speaker 2: and it could. I don't think the Jaguars will use
- 17:02Speaker 2: Travis etn in that role unless.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Devin Durbiny were already get hurt, but it does.
- 17:09Speaker 2: The reason that running backs hadn't been used before was
- 17:12Speaker 2: he didn't want to risk your star players for injuries.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Now I do think you could see more quote star
- 17:20Speaker 2: players playing back there. For the Jaguars, They've already got
- 17:24Speaker 2: their star returner, so it's gonna be interesting. I don't
- 17:28Speaker 2: know that we know the answer to this question yet.
- 17:30Speaker 2: I think it will evolve next season, but I think
- 17:33Speaker 2: you could get back to a point where teams are
- 17:36Speaker 2: putting Back in the day when Washington was really good,
- 17:39Speaker 2: they would put Darryl Green back there, who was an
- 17:41Speaker 2: all Pro cornerback, and when they needed it, they would
- 17:45Speaker 2: put him back on kicks.
- 17:46Speaker 3: It was mainly punts.
- 17:48Speaker 2: But point being, if you take the injury risk out
- 17:50Speaker 2: of it, and it does look like this new format
- 17:55Speaker 2: will significantly take the injury risk away from the returner,
- 17:59Speaker 2: then maybe you we'll see more running backs.
- 18:01Speaker 1: You watch some of the setups they have for XFL
- 18:04Speaker 1: and stuff. It just looks so strange. But I'm very
- 18:06Speaker 1: excited to see that.
- 18:07Speaker 2: But it looks like the pace once they get going,
- 18:11Speaker 2: it does look strange, but the pace does feel more
- 18:15Speaker 2: like a running back's pace, if that makes any sense. Yes,
- 18:18Speaker 2: because you're sort of starting more from a standing position.
- 18:23Speaker 3: You're kind of building accelerate. Yeah.
- 18:25Speaker 2: So yeah, I think a lot of this it is
- 18:29Speaker 2: to be played out. It'll take some innovative coach to
- 18:32Speaker 2: do something that'll work.
- 18:34Speaker 3: People will follow it.
- 18:35Speaker 1: This is a good change I think we can agree on.
- 18:37Speaker 1: I think it'll be fun at least at least a
- 18:38Speaker 1: little bit different. Not I feel like every time we
- 18:40Speaker 1: get a rule change, we're always complaining. With this one,
- 18:41Speaker 1: I'm kind of interested.
- 18:42Speaker 2: In well credited for trying something because the kickoff had
- 18:45Speaker 2: been taken out of the game. The shame is that
- 18:49Speaker 2: I I've yet to see anything that can bring the
- 18:52Speaker 2: on side kickback because the danger and I think the
- 18:54Speaker 2: on side kicked the way they've got it having to
- 18:55Speaker 2: tell teams you're going to do it and you're.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Sort of silly.
- 19:00Speaker 2: But they'll figure out a way to bring that element back,
- 19:05Speaker 2: maybe the fourth and twenty five past they've been talking about.
- 19:07Speaker 2: But I do think this will add more excitement. It
- 19:10Speaker 2: had gotten to the point where we're sitting in the
- 19:12Speaker 2: press box and each other guy, we don't even bother
- 19:13Speaker 2: watching the kickoff.
- 19:14Speaker 1: You know, so then you sit down there, go get
- 19:16Speaker 1: a coffee.
- 19:16Speaker 3: That kind of stinks, So I think it'd be a
- 19:19Speaker 3: good thing to get it back.
- 19:19Speaker 1: All right, say what's here on Jagzam. We'll be right
- 19:22Speaker 1: back after the break from the Hyundai studios here for
- 19:31Speaker 1: Jagsam closing things out. We mentioned off the top of
- 19:34Speaker 1: the show it's t minus twenty three days until the draft.
- 19:37Speaker 1: We're in full draft mode.
- 19:39Speaker 3: John.
- 19:40Speaker 1: What does that mean for you? Are you looking into
- 19:43Speaker 1: all of these particular players or are you still trying
- 19:45Speaker 1: to figure out Well.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I look at the first round realistically. I
- 19:50Speaker 2: always kind of laugh when I see seven round mock.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Drafts because they need to tell me the lottery numbers
- 19:57Speaker 1: if they can get all that well, the.
- 19:58Speaker 2: First rounds darted aboard anyway, and then once you get
- 20:01Speaker 2: into the sixth round, for me to try to figure
- 20:03Speaker 2: out who they might take in the sixth round. You know,
- 20:07Speaker 2: more power too if you can figure it out. But
- 20:11Speaker 2: it's it's mainly trying to look at positions and trying
- 20:15Speaker 2: to get a feel for conceptually what they might do.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I'm not one to ever think you can grade a draft,
- 20:23Speaker 2: especially right out of the box, but I think you
- 20:26Speaker 2: can get a feel for did a team do what
- 20:29Speaker 2: they wanted to do? Did they go need over best
- 20:32Speaker 2: available player? Which I think is always dangerous, especially as
- 20:35Speaker 2: you get deeper in the draft. So it's things like
- 20:38Speaker 2: that I try to figure out rather than trying to
- 20:39Speaker 2: get into the seventh round.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Defensive end talked.
- 20:42Speaker 1: A little bit about trading for picks. Trent Bulk stockpiled
- 20:46Speaker 1: a bunch of them last year. They have eight this year.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Is this something where if they were going to trade
- 20:52Speaker 1: up maybe try to get higher in first or second round.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Would that be something we see now wish or would
- 20:57Speaker 1: that be closer to actual drafts?
- 20:58Speaker 2: Well, if you're gonna do the first round and you
- 21:02Speaker 2: have an early pick, you often see it. Now, You
- 21:06Speaker 2: rarely see it deep in the draft until the draft
- 21:10Speaker 2: because teams are usually trading up to somebody involved is
- 21:13Speaker 2: usually trading up to go.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Get a specific player.
- 21:16Speaker 2: So if you're Trent right now and you're sitting at seventeen,
- 21:20Speaker 2: is it worth it to try to go up to
- 21:21Speaker 2: nine when theoretically the guy that you're trying to go
- 21:24Speaker 2: up and get could be gone.
- 21:26Speaker 3: So you usually don't see that.
- 21:28Speaker 2: I think when Sammy Watkins got traded for it's been
- 21:31Speaker 2: ten eleven years now, they knew they were gonna make
- 21:34Speaker 2: that trade.
- 21:34Speaker 3: My understanding is, but they had.
- 21:36Speaker 2: To wait until a couple of guys got off the
- 21:37Speaker 2: board to make sure he was going to be available
- 21:39Speaker 2: to get there, And that's that's sort of the common
- 21:41Speaker 2: thing is I think magical about the Sammy Watkins story.
- 21:44Speaker 2: One interesting thing about this draft, it is not considered
- 21:48Speaker 2: a very deep draft. Last year's was maybe the deepest ever.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Next year is supposed to be very very deep. This
- 21:56Speaker 2: year is not considered great in the sixth or seventh round,
- 22:00Speaker 2: so that can.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Play into.
- 22:04Speaker 2: It can theoretically make trading more difficult because people really
- 22:08Speaker 2: don't care about getting anything. Then so you're not really
- 22:12Speaker 2: going to be getting people to give up anything to
- 22:14Speaker 2: get into those rounds.
- 22:15Speaker 3: So will that play out that way?
- 22:18Speaker 2: Probably not, because usually once guys get into the sixty
- 22:21Speaker 2: seventh round, they figure out something that they like and
- 22:23Speaker 2: they get antsy and they want to trade.
- 22:25Speaker 3: But not considered a very deep drift.
- 22:26Speaker 1: All right, Well, we will deep dive into this. As
- 22:29Speaker 1: we mentioned, we're going to be talking about it for
- 22:30Speaker 1: the next twenty three days, so we'll keep you covered there.
- 22:33Speaker 1: We'll see you back here next week on jag Zam.
