- Lucas: Welcome back to another episode of Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and with me is Luna. Luna, how was your trip to the market yesterday? Luna: It was fun, but I got a little confused when trying to ask the price of some fruits. I knew how to say 'how much' in Malay, but I kept forgetting it. Lucas: That's perfect timing because today we're going to focus on 'berapa', which means 'how much' or 'how many'. It's super useful, especially at the market. Luna: Berapa. Okay, I think I've heard that. Like 'Berapa harga?' – how much is the price? Lucas: Exactly. 'Berapa harga' literally means 'how much price'. So when you're at a stall, you can point at something and ask 'Berapa harga ini?' – how much is this? Luna: Berapa harga ini? That's easy. So 'ini' means 'this', right? I remember that from earlier episodes. Lucas: Yes, you're right. And if you want to ask how many of something, you can say 'Berapa banyak?' – how many? Like if you're buying eggs, you might ask 'Berapa banyak telur?' – how many eggs? Luna: Berapa banyak telur? That makes sense. So 'banyak' means 'many'. Lucas: Exactly. Now, let's practice a little scenario. Imagine you're at a fruit stall and you see some mangoes. You want to buy them. You ask 'Berapa harga mangga?' – how much are the mangoes? Luna: Berapa harga mangga? The vendor says 'Lima ringgit' – five ringgit, I think. Lucas: That's right. Then you can say 'Saya nak beli ini' – I want to buy this. That uses the verb 'nak beli', which means 'want to buy'. You learned 'beli' earlier. Luna: Saya nak beli ini. So I'm pointing at the mangoes and saying 'I want to buy this'. That feels good. Lucas: And if you think the price is a bit high, you can try 'Boleh kurang?' – Can you reduce it? That's a common bargaining phrase. Luna: Boleh kurang? That's useful. So 'boleh' means 'can', and 'kurang' means 'less'. So literally 'can less'. Lucas: Exactly. And then after you agree on a price, you say 'Terima kasih' – thank you. You've already learned that, but it's always good to repeat. Luna: Terima kasih. So the whole transaction: 'Berapa harga mangga?' 'Lima ringgit.' 'Saya nak beli ini.' 'Boleh kurang?' 'Empat ringgit.' 'Saya ambil ini.' Wait, is 'ambil' okay? Lucas: Yes, 'ambil' means 'take', so 'Saya ambil ini' – I'll take this. That's a great phrase too, but let's not add it to today's focus. We'll stick with what we have. Luna: Okay, so today we have 'Berapa harga?', 'Berapa banyak?', 'Saya nak beli ini.', 'Boleh kurang?', and 'Terima kasih.' That's five phrases. Perfect. Lucas: Let's practice them one more time. Say them with me: 'Berapa harga?'... 'Berapa banyak?'... 'Saya nak beli ini.'... 'Boleh kurang?'... 'Terima kasih.' Luna: That was good. You know, Fexingo has been helping me get better at Malay. If you're finding these lessons helpful, maybe consider supporting the show. It's a low-key way to keep it going. Luna: So back to the market. After you say 'Boleh kurang?', the vendor might say 'Boleh' – can, meaning yes, or 'Tidak boleh' – cannot. Lucas: Right. And if they say 'Boleh', you can respond with 'Terima kasih' and pay. If they say 'Tidak boleh', you can decide whether to accept the price or walk away. Luna: That's practical. Let's do a quick role-play. I'll be the vendor, you be the customer. You ask 'Berapa harga nasi lemak?' – how much is nasi lemak? Lucas: Berapa harga nasi lemak? Luna: Dua ringgit. That's two ringgit. Then you say 'Saya nak beli dua.' – I want to buy two. Lucas: Saya nak beli dua. Luna: Then you say 'Boleh kurang?' – can you reduce, and I say 'Boleh, satu setengah.' – can, one and a half each. Lucas: Then you say 'Terima kasih.' – thank you. Perfect. Luna: I love how these phrases just flow together. Now I feel more confident to ask prices when I'm out. Lucas: Absolutely. Today we learned 'Berapa harga?' for 'how much is it?', 'Berapa banyak?' for 'how many?', 'Saya nak beli ini.' for 'I want to buy this', 'Boleh kurang?' for bargaining, and 'Terima kasih' for thanking. Luna: And remember, practice makes perfect. Try using them in your next market trip. We'll be back with more Malay soon. Thanks for listening to Learn Malay with Fexingo.
