- 3:08It is hot. It is in about the middle of
- 3:11July, which means we are about 6 weeks away from college football
- 3:17as well as the NFL, but primarily my personal favorite
- 3:22being college football. And with that I decided to come
- 3:27up with a series of College football for dummies.
- 3:29And this is supposed to be something that if you if you
- 3:34know someone or if you're friends with someone that they
- 3:37are a just absolute college sports nut, especially when it
- 3:40comes to football and football season.
- 3:42You wonder why can't we go to any, you know, fall weddings in
- 3:45October or November on Saturdays?
- 3:48Well, it's because there's more important things like college
- 3:51football about and especially big time matchups.
- 3:54So so that's what I decided to make this series about is to
- 3:58covering all of that all the way from the very basics of as far
- 4:02as what the offense is, how the offense works, the defense, the
- 4:05special teams. And then I started to move into
- 4:08the conferences. I started alphabetically.
- 4:10So I went with the ACCI went with the big the Big 10.
- 4:14Last week I did the Big 12. And now this week for the last
- 4:17the Power 4 conferences, I'm doing the SEC, one of the other
- 4:22big boy giant program giant conferences that essentially
- 4:27runs college football. And if you're if you know
- 4:30anybody or you're friends with anybody that's a big fan of
- 4:32college football, you'll have probably heard or know the SEC
- 4:37dominated college football. Now for probably close to the
- 4:41last 20 ish years. A good majority of the national
- 4:44champions came out of the SEC. My LSU Tigers having won three
- 4:49of those. Florida won a couple, Georgia
- 4:51has won a couple. Alabama has won a ton.
- 4:55Unfortunately, as is the case, Auburn won one in there, but
- 5:01none the less, it's a fun conference.
- 5:03It's a very deep conference. It's a conference that has a ton
- 5:05of history, has a ton of tradition.
- 5:06It has a ton of rivalries that going along with it.
- 5:09And I know I live in Indiana. I live in Big 10 country.
- 5:13I grew up watching the big 10. I still enjoy the Big 10, but
- 5:17none the less I still I still I still I still enjoy it.
- 5:21Joy. I heard Johnny Contra yes,
- 5:23exactly. But none the less, though, let's
- 5:26get into, let's get into the history of the SEC.
- 5:29Where did the SEC come from? When was it first founded?
- 5:33It is not the oldest, but it is old.
- 5:35It's older. It's it is the second oldest,
- 5:38just behind the Big 10. The SEC was founded in 1932.
- 5:42So it turns 94 this year. They do have 16 teams and they
- 5:49recently, well not recently, but they did a lot of their
- 5:51expansion as far as big expansion all the way back in
- 5:55the 90s when they brought in Arkansas, as well as they also
- 5:59brought in the University of South Carolina.
- 6:01And then they didn't expand again all the way until 2012.
- 6:05So they went a long time. A lot of their founding members
- 6:10are still with the conference now.
- 6:11They did have a few that believe it or not, actually left.
- 6:14Georgia Tech was a founding member.
- 6:16They left in 1964. Swanee, the University of the
- 6:21South in Tennessee, they are also a founding member, but they
- 6:25left in 1940. And then Tulane, the Mean Green
- 6:28Wave, they left in 1966. So those are the only three.
- 6:33So that's also where, and I'll get into this a little bit later
- 6:36when I start talking about the rivalries, but This is why if
- 6:40you're ever watching an SEC game and one of the big matchups,
- 6:42it's usually one of the last games of the year is Georgia
- 6:45Tech versus Georgia. It's because technically they
- 6:47did used to be in the same conference.
- 6:49Now they do obviously share the same state.
- 6:51They've continued that rivalry ever since.
- 6:54But nonetheless, Georgia Tech was a former member that has
- 6:58left and then since then the the conference stayed pretty much
- 7:03the same. Alabama was in in 1932, so it
- 7:05was Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, my school, LSU,
- 7:10University of Mississippi AKA Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and
- 7:15then the University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
- 7:19So like I said, they ended up adding the University of
- 7:21Arkansas in 1991 with the Southwestern Conference was kind
- 7:24of a little bit iffy. Arkansas, I talked about this in
- 7:28the last episode of the Big 12, but to give a little bit of a
- 7:30recap, Arkansas was kind of always the odd man out in the in
- 7:34the Southwestern Conference because they were the only non
- 7:36Texas school in the conference. So they were kind of left out
- 7:40there like, yeah, we want to go somewhere else.
- 7:42They actually already had a lot of natural rivalries in in the
- 7:45SEC to start with, especially with LSU.
- 7:48They had it, they could have it with Mississippi, Alabama,
- 7:51Tennessee, all of them. So it just seemed like an
- 7:53overall natural better fit for them.
- 7:56And then one team that joined that was a little bit of
- 7:59surprise was the University of South Carolina, the Gamecocks,
- 8:02the quote UN quote, original USC because technically it is older
- 8:06than the University of Southern Southern.
- 8:08Yeah, Southern California. Just saying, just throw it out
- 8:11there. It is older than quote UN quote
- 8:12USC. For all my college football fans
- 8:14out there, Joy I know lives in in Louisiana.
- 8:18So she roots for Tigers and she said go hogs.
- 8:23I know I'm technically allowed to say it because I do have a
- 8:26degree from the University of Arkansas and I'm working on a
- 8:29degree currently from Louisiana State University LSU.
- 8:34So Joy, you got to you got to tell me the story of why you
- 8:36also say go hogs as well as go Tigers.
- 8:39So you got to you got to tell me that rivalry in comments.
- 8:43So they they didn't expand again from 91.
- 8:45They expanded again in nine in 2012.
- 8:48Now there is a few rumors as far as who they were trying to get.
- 8:51Were they trying to get a few other teams again as conferences
- 8:56started to get a little bit little bit rocky and a little
- 8:59bit iffy as they kind of do every single every few years as
- 9:02far as new media rights deals, as far as people kind of being
- 9:05unhappy with revenue distribution and whatnot from
- 9:09those media rights deals and whatnot.
- 9:10So some of these conferences get real really iffy.
- 9:13Oh, you have Arkansas Rich Joy. OK, that's awesome.
- 9:15I will say I drove through Arkansas when I was leaving DC
- 9:20getting stationed out in Texas for my medic school and it's a
- 9:24it is a pretty state, but it's very, very long to have to go
- 9:28through. But I I didn't mind Arkansas and
- 9:31I have AI have a pretty good friend.
- 9:32He's from Arkansas and I remember he's a huge fan of the
- 9:36huge fan of the pigs. But they decided to have the
- 9:41University of Missouri or Mizzou in 2012 as well as Texas A&M.
- 9:47And Texas A&M was kind of the big one because they were
- 9:50leaving the Big 12. And it was kind of that weird
- 9:55moment of do they stay in the Big 12 or do they go somewhere
- 9:58else? Because part of it, the rumor
- 10:00is, is they wanted to get rid. They wanted to get away from the
- 10:03University of Texas. Like I said, the SEC is very,
- 10:06very rooted in a lot of deep, deep hatred and deep rivalries
- 10:11with us, US talking. Appreciate you, appreciate you
- 10:15tuning in. Some parts are beautiful.
- 10:18I kind of, I kind of think that way about a lot of states.
- 10:20Like I think Arkansas could be pretty.
- 10:22I mean, I know it's a fly over flat state.
- 10:25I think parts of Indiana are very pretty.
- 10:27But again, some people might argue that.
- 10:29I know there's some people are more, more fans of like
- 10:31mountains or the ocean or beaches or stuff like that.
- 10:33So I, I definitely get it. But nonetheless, though there,
- 10:38there is a theory that Texas A&M wanted to get away from Texas,
- 10:42so they decided to join the SEC. And again, they didn't expand
- 10:47really at all from any, any point moving forward all the way
- 10:51up until 20/24/2024 is when we probably saw the biggest
- 10:56expansion and a whole lot of moves for the first time since
- 11:00about 2014. Yeah, about 2014 with a Big
- 11:04East, which is still a basketball conference in
- 11:08college, but it's no longer a Football Conference when it
- 11:10dissolved. There is another massive
- 11:12movement, but not nearly to the effect of when the PAC 12
- 11:16dissolved. Technically, the PAC 12 is still
- 11:19around, but a lot. Pretty much almost all of its
- 11:22original teams except for two left to go to other conferences.
- 11:27But in 2024, two teams decided to leave the Big 12.
- 11:30That was Texas and that was Oklahoma.
- 11:32And it was kind of a big blow to the Big 12 because that was two
- 11:35of their biggest brands. The SEC was getting really two
- 11:38major bumps. They were getting the fact that
- 11:40they were getting two big, big, big major brands that were
- 11:43almost always considered national contenders.
- 11:45They were two big brands that have never had any trouble as
- 11:48far as recruiting in high school or recruiting people to come
- 11:52play for them in the transfer portal.
- 11:53If they feel that they're not getting enough starting time.
- 11:56If they feel that, hey, I've been sitting here on the bench
- 11:58for two years at the school, when am I going to get my turn?
- 12:01They could potentially come there, fill in any spots they
- 12:04could potentially come in and be a starter.
- 12:06So they were really good brands, really good money making brands
- 12:10to come over. They got the invite and they
- 12:12ended up joining in 2024. And so with all of that, the SEC
- 12:19now has 16 teams. So they're they're not the
- 12:23biggest, but they are a pretty considerably sized conference
- 12:27and kind of the really cool thing.
- 12:29And I'll actually bring it up here on screen.
- 12:32So if you can't see unfortunately, I would
- 12:35definitely say check out YouTube because I'm going to upload this
- 12:38on YouTube shortly shortly after this is done.
- 12:42So if you look here on the map, let's see if I can blow this up
- 12:47or make this bigger. Here we go.
- 12:50OK, so if you see where all of these all of these blue dots
- 12:55are, these are all different schools that are in the SEC.
- 12:59You have Alabama, you've got Arkansas, you've got Auburn,
- 13:05you've got LSU, Texas A&M, Texas, Florida, South Carolina,
- 13:11Georgia. I believe this is Tennessee,
- 13:14Tennessee, Vandy because they're closer to Nashville, Kentucky,
- 13:18this is Ole Miss, and then this is Mississippi State, and then
- 13:21of course, LSU and Mizzou and then Oklahoma.
- 13:24So like I said, they're pretty substantial and they make a good
- 13:29amount of money and they have a lot of quality teams and they've
- 13:31produced a ton of quality players over the years.
- 13:34You might hear this again, depending on who who you know or
- 13:38who you or who you're with that potentially likes and follows
- 13:41college football a lot. The last three years, the Big 10
- 13:45has won a national champ, has won the national championship.
- 13:48Prior to that, it was almost exclusively just the SEC.
- 13:53There's a couple times where Clemson won it.
- 13:55There's a Florida State win in there.
- 13:58Ohio State did manage to win one in there, but other than that,
- 14:02it has almost exclusively been just the SEC winning national
- 14:07title here within the last 20 years.
- 14:10Now, obviously the biggest exception being within the last
- 14:12three, the the SEC has unfortunately fallen short now
- 14:16in the NIL era. Now there's a lot of rumors and
- 14:19speculations as to why. There's a lot of rumors and a
- 14:23lot of coaches and a lot of people kind of get uncomfortable
- 14:26when this is brought up. There are rumors that the SEC
- 14:29was paying players prior to the name, image and likeness or the
- 14:33NIL era that is today, now that it is legal for that to happen
- 14:39across everywhere in the country.
- 14:40And now the argument is because these Big 10 schools who have a
- 14:45ton of money, who have a lot of alumni who are successful and
- 14:48donate to their schools now that they can pay the the play, the
- 14:53playing field has now shifted to the Big 10.
- 14:55Or honestly, in my opinion, it's become just a little bit more
- 14:59even of, you know, now you don't have the Georges and the Bamas
- 15:04having, you know, 3 and 4 five star product, you know,
- 15:08prospects, you know, deep in the roster layoff 1 starter goes
- 15:12down. We have a guy that's
- 15:13ridiculously talented and good. They can just immediately come
- 15:17in and immediately fill the shoes.
- 15:19Joy Yeah, so weird. I don't like it And, and it, and
- 15:22it is kind of weird It, it's one of those that I, there's some
- 15:28people that they get uncomfortable and they don't
- 15:31like the idea of like conference pride of light.
- 15:34And, and I do get it. And I, and it is kind of weird
- 15:37because of the SC CS roots and their traditions and how deep
- 15:41some of these rivalries extend that there is a conference
- 15:46pride, you know, like, if I'm like, I'll, I'll be completely
- 15:50honest, whenever Alabama's in the playoffs, I'm like, man, I
- 15:53want you all to be a first round X.
- 15:54It's so bad. Like for, for anybody who
- 15:57doesn't know, I, I have never been a fan of the University of
- 16:01Alabama, like ever. I have friends that go to the
- 16:03University of Alabama. I have classmates that I went to
- 16:06high school with. They graduated, they went to
- 16:08Alabama, they got their degree from Bama.
- 16:11Of course they're they love Bama.
- 16:13And for me, I've just I've never been a fan.
- 16:17I've never been a fan of Bama. I've never really cared for some
- 16:21of the the crazy fanatics that come out of Alabama.
- 16:24And honestly, you could make that argument for each and every
- 16:28single fan base of any school, any team across any sport.
- 16:32The Bama just in particular, it's Roll Tide.
- 16:37It is funny, I do have one of my favorite gifts is actually
- 16:42somebody decided to take the tide laundry bottles and roll
- 16:45them and it says Roll Tide roll. That's probably my absolute
- 16:49favorite gift that I love to use to troll Alabama fans is is that
- 16:53specific gift. But it the SEC is weird with the
- 16:59whole like conference pride because I feel like more now,
- 17:03because there's such a we need to prove that we are still the
- 17:08elite conference that we can still keep up with the big 10
- 17:13that they they've like shifted to this conference pride thing
- 17:17of like, oh, well, we're still the SEC, We're still the best.
- 17:19And like, that's again, just because of some of the rivalries
- 17:22and, and how deep these rivalries go and how intertwined
- 17:26this conference is to me. It's weird.
- 17:29And I will say too, to kind of go back into the history and
- 17:32kind of the setup of the SEC. For the longest time, the SEC
- 17:35would only do 8 conference games.
- 17:37So basically they would have eight games on their schedule
- 17:40out of 12 when they moved up to 12, which means they would have
- 17:458 SEC opponents that they would go up against and they would
- 17:48play every single year. Now when it was small enough,
- 17:52you could basically rotate through everybody pretty evenly.
- 17:55You might have a couple one offs here and there where you
- 17:57wouldn't face the entire conference.
- 18:00Then as it expanded, then as it continue to grow, that has kind
- 18:03of moved away. Now they're moving into, I
- 18:06believe if I remember correctly, the terminology they use, it's
- 18:09like groupings. So basically one SEC team will
- 18:13have 3 opponents that they will play every single year
- 18:17consistently. And that's kind of more to keep
- 18:19the idea of these bigger mainstream rivalries going.
- 18:24So it's for example, like Texas, I believe they're three are
- 18:28Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and I believe, I believe the third is
- 18:35Arkansas. But I might be 100% wrong on
- 18:39that. Like one big rivalry, for
- 18:44example, that's probably not going to happen as frequently
- 18:46anymore is LSU versus Alabama every single year.
- 18:50And even though it's not the oldest rivalry, it is a rivalry
- 18:53that has gone on for a long time.
- 18:55And it's unfortunate because it's not going to happen every
- 18:58single year. Starting next year now, they're
- 19:01going to play each other, I believe every other year as far
- 19:04as how the rotation goes. But it is just kind of
- 19:07unfortunate. And so with that, these these
- 19:11rivalries in these games have always been so tight and so
- 19:15close. And again, that's where a lot of
- 19:18the hatred comes in. It's because like, yeah, we had
- 19:20to face these guys every single year.
- 19:22And if you ever go onto social media and if you ever see them
- 19:25interview, you know who's the most annoying fans of the SEC?
- 19:29I've heard Tennessee, I've heard LSU, I've heard Bama, I've heard
- 19:33Georgia. I've heard some Texas A&M,
- 19:37depending on where you live at. I've heard some from Auburn
- 19:41there. There's probably bigger schools
- 19:45that you don't really hear anything bad about their fans.
- 19:47Like I don't really hear anything bad about Kentucky very
- 19:49often. I don't hear anything bad about
- 19:51Arkansas, South Carolina. I don't hear much about Vandy.
- 19:57Even though Vanderbilt just recently became like really,
- 19:59really good or at least another couple years, they've become
- 20:03really, really good. You just don't hear as much
- 20:07anymore about it. But nonetheless, though, we'll
- 20:11move into the rivalry portion of it, probably one of my one of my
- 20:15favorite parts of it because again, these rivalries are so
- 20:18old. They happen every single year.
- 20:20And this is what if if I had to really put into words kind of
- 20:28the magic that comes with college football.
- 20:31It's the it's kind of the pride you get of bragging rights of my
- 20:37team beat this team. And I can't stand that team.
- 20:40I can't stand that school. I can't stand the stuff that
- 20:42they do. Like I said with Alabama, I hate
- 20:45the whole Roll Tide thing. My Roll Tide roll like and it
- 20:50and it was funny. And because there used to be a
- 20:53joke that I could always hear all the time.
- 20:57It was like, Oh, I'm, it's like, oh, where are you from?
- 21:01Oh, I'm from Alabama roll time. I didn't mean to hear the roll
- 21:04time part, but OK, now, now I, that tells me everything I need
- 21:08to know about you. And honestly, probably the the,
- 21:12the best part about this and this far is the best joke is
- 21:16there's ever anything about, you know, like families doing
- 21:20inappropriate of things with like other family members
- 21:23consensually. Let me do that there
- 21:24consensually as far as like cousins, brother, sister or
- 21:29whatever you want to go into. Again, this is a joke.
- 21:32It's a joke. The first immediate reaction
- 21:36that a lot of people have, or at least that I have, is real time.
- 21:39So yeah, that's what I always find funny.
- 21:42I actually said that to my nephew one time.
- 21:45I think our uncle was telling us a story.
- 21:48This guy in a, this guy in the apartment complex that he takes
- 21:54care of, I believe he said was married to his first cousin,
- 22:01first or second cousin. Nonetheless, I was like, yeah,
- 22:03there's there's too much blood in that water for, for it to be
- 22:06uncomfortable for me in the first, first time, my mouth was
- 22:09roll tied and my, my nephew just absolutely lost it.
- 22:12He just absolutely lost it. And, and, and I'm one of those
- 22:16people, like if I can get somebody to have a really good
- 22:18laugh, it makes me laugh just as much.
- 22:22Enjoy, commented Taylon Green. He was really good at Arkansas
- 22:26last year. I liked him as one of our
- 22:28clients bought $1,000,000 home here near Dallas before he
- 22:31graduated. That's awesome.
- 22:32I remember watching him last year and I loved watching him
- 22:35play. When I found out that he was a
- 22:38senior and that he was going to have to graduate, I was like,
- 22:40man, I would love to see Taylon Green like take one more step
- 22:45forward. Like like any contender,
- 22:48honestly, like I wouldn't have been happy if he went to Alabama
- 22:51because he would probably do extremely well.
- 22:55But watching him with what he was able to do at Arkansas with
- 22:58what he had, he was extremely electric and fun to watch.
- 23:04And I it's going to sound mean. It's one of those I don't
- 23:07understand why Cleveland drafted him because of their whole
- 23:10quarterback mess. But hey, if he ends up coming
- 23:12out and winning this starting job over Shedur, over to Sean,
- 23:16over to Dylan Gabriel, I won't be upset because I watched the
- 23:20kid in college. I thought Taylor Green was
- 23:21absolutely fantastic. No, I'm not going to sit here
- 23:24and say he's like first round pick, but he's absolutely a
- 23:28great quarterback. But let's get into some of the
- 23:30SEC rivalries here. So again, these aren't all of
- 23:34them. These are a majority of them.
- 23:37They even did a ranking. CBS did, CBS Sports did back in
- 23:422024, right when the day before Texas and Oklahoma were actually
- 23:49scheduled to join the SEC because they joined July 1st of
- 23:522024. So a little bit over two years
- 23:55ago to the day and they decided to rank some of the biggest SEC
- 24:00rivalries and how they kind of pan out as compared to some of
- 24:03the other ones. So the first one CBS Sports had,
- 24:06they had Texas versus Oklahoma, the Red River Rivalry.
- 24:10You've even heard, you know, Red River Shootout, which kind of
- 24:13depends on on I think who more of who's broadcasting it and how
- 24:17they kind of want to portray it more than anything.
- 24:22It is a huge rivalry in college football.
- 24:24This is one of those the Red River rivalry of Texas versus
- 24:29Oklahoma that usually happens in October.
- 24:32So that's again, if you, if you have friends that are hosting a
- 24:36fall wedding and it falls on that day, your significant other
- 24:39is probably they're going to be super upset or watching their
- 24:42phone the entire time. Same with whoever is getting
- 24:45married might also be upset that they're getting married if
- 24:49they're a college football fan in October.
- 24:51Just specifically for this game, a little bit of a fun fact about
- 24:55it. And your team has won more than
- 24:584 consecutive games in the rivalry since 2004.
- 25:02So basically, Texas hasn't won more than four times.
- 25:04Oklahoma hasn't won more than four times.
- 25:07Now again, this is also a couple years ago, but Texas does lead
- 25:11the lead the all time series currently with over 60 wins to
- 25:15Oklahoma's over 50 losses. The second one, and it's
- 25:19actually the first year on the sheet, Alabama versus Auburn,
- 25:21AKA the Iron Bowl. This is an absolute is a big one
- 25:26because one of the few teams that could truly stop the coach
- 25:31that everybody considers the GOAT or the greatest of all
- 25:33time. And Nick Saban, that was one of
- 25:37the places he used to struggle with a lot.
- 25:39And even if you watch college game day with Nick Saban as he
- 25:42talks about this, one of the things he mentions is he does
- 25:45believe that Auburn Stadium is haunted, that there's some type
- 25:48of voodoo ghost magic there because Auburn, because Alabama
- 25:51would always struggle against Auburn and it doesn't matter.
- 25:55That's kind of the great thing about rivalries and especially
- 25:58in the SEC when it's a big time rivalry like Alabama versus
- 26:01Auburn, Texas versus Oklahoma, it doesn't matter what the
- 26:05rankings are. If Alabama's ranked the number
- 26:08one team in the country and Auburn's ranked, you know, the
- 26:11the worst team in the country, it will be an absolute fight and
- 26:15it will be absolutely close. And there could be an upset at
- 26:18any point time and any given point there could be an upset at
- 26:23these rivalries. And again, that's kind of the
- 26:24most fun thing of think of it. And again, if you if you don't
- 26:31like boxing, I'm trying to make the best comparison I can think
- 26:36of it. Think of it kind of like if you
- 26:38get like if you buy like a mystery box item, right?
- 26:40If you purchase something from a store and they offer like, oh,
- 26:43yeah, here you're going to get a free mystery item with your
- 26:45order. Like, oh, what is it?
- 26:47Could it be this? Could it be this, Could it be
- 26:48this? You just don't know.
- 26:49That's kind of the magic and the excitement of it.
- 26:52That's how it is for rivalry games for college football fans.
- 26:55I'm like, oh, how is this game going again?
- 26:57Who is going to potentially win this game?
- 27:00Because again, a lot of times depending on if the teams are
- 27:03really good, if one's really good and one's really bad, it
- 27:05can have a lot of implications for if the really bad team beats
- 27:09the really good team or if they're both really good.
- 27:12It could potentially be kind of like a knockout punch of what,
- 27:14you know, if we win and you lose, you're potentially going
- 27:17to be out and we're going to move forward.
- 27:19And sometimes that happens too, like we're just going to play
- 27:21spoiler because we don't want you to continue to move forward.
- 27:25Now one that, believe it or not, I don't think gets as much
- 27:29attention because neither team is they were big.
- 27:35The one team was actually big last year because they were able
- 27:38to make a playoff run and a pretty good one at that.
- 27:42One of the first times they've been able to do that.
- 27:47But it's it's a game that I feel doesn't get the attention.
- 27:51I'm not going to say that maybe it deserves, but it doesn't get
- 27:54the attention just because of the brands that are in it.
- 27:56And that's Mississippi State versus Old Miss, AKA the Egg
- 27:59Bowl. Again, it's the Battle of
- 28:02Mississippi. It's one of those the
- 28:04Mississippi State, not historically the greatest school
- 28:08as far as competing. Old Miss, especially more
- 28:12recently has been more on the up and up, but it's not exactly the
- 28:15biggest, I would say sexiest, you know, draw of like, oh,
- 28:20college football's on what's on. Oh, the Egg Bowl, like it's
- 28:24really only big if you like have a stake in either one of those
- 28:28team. Like if you're a fan of Ole Miss
- 28:30or if you're a fan of Mississippi State, then you want
- 28:33to watch it. Otherwise, it's kind of it's
- 28:35another potentially good game. Maybe not that's on there and
- 28:38we'll we'll rock with it kind of thing.
- 28:41Florida versus Georgia. This is one that happens all the
- 28:43time. I'm going to be honest, there is
- 28:45a trophy name to this. I'm not even going to try to
- 28:51unseat that because it's something or trophy.
- 28:55And if I butcher this, I'm going to look like an absolute goober.
- 28:57So I'm not going to do that. Apparently one of the other
- 29:01names that is called those the World's largest outdoor Cocktail
- 29:04party, it's typically it takes place in a neutral site in
- 29:08Florida and it is one. It is an absolute, very heated
- 29:12rivalry for an extremely long time and and it's kind of been
- 29:16one sided year lately because Georgia has won a majority of
- 29:20the matchups here lately. Another one we have Auburn
- 29:23versus Georgia. It's supposed to be the South's
- 29:25old Deep South's oldest rival. It says, as the nickname
- 29:30suggests, there's a considerable history between the two.
- 29:33It's tied with North Carolina and Virginia as the South's
- 29:36oldest rivalry for the second most played series in the FBS
- 29:41behind only Wisconsin and Minnesota's annual battle for
- 29:44the Paul Bunyan's Axe. Not only is it old, but Auburn
- 29:48versus Georgia's typically hotly contested.
- 29:52Although Georgia has ruled in the modern era.
- 29:54You don't have to look too far back of, you know, Auburn being
- 29:57able to compete with them pretty, pretty regularly.
- 30:01And Georgia does lead the series in that one that has just
- 30:05recently become a rivalry again. It did stop when Texas A&M left
- 30:10the Big 12 to go to the SEC, mainly because they didn't want
- 30:15to schedule each other. And again, I don't know if it's
- 30:17one sided or not, but Texas versus Texas A&MAK the Lone Star
- 30:23showdown, we were able to get that back I believe a couple
- 30:27years ago, maybe even that was it was a couple years ago.
- 30:30It was like their first year back, we were able to get it
- 30:33back into the fold. And Texas ended up beating Texas
- 30:37A&M last year, too, and then they're going to face again this
- 30:39year. So it says Texas and Texas A&M
- 30:44hadn't seen each other on the field in 13 years until Texas
- 30:50moved to the SEC as well. Only three rivalries in the SEC
- 30:53have more than 118 games between the Longhorns and the Aggies,
- 30:59and apparently the feelings are so intense that each school
- 31:02mentions the other in its fight songs.
- 31:05They did the comparison of college football's version of
- 31:08Kendrick Lamar versus Drake beef, and Texas leads the series
- 31:13by a large margin with almost eighty wins and Texas A&M's just
- 31:20under 40. Joyce says Texas.
- 31:22Texas A&M sucks I or is it Texas or Texas A&M?
- 31:26Because I'm going to be honest with what Texas A&M did to LSU
- 31:31last year and honestly even the year before that, but especially
- 31:34last year, I am not a fan of the whole gigamaggies like Texas
- 31:38A&M. If they lose like six games and
- 31:42can't even go bowling, I'm OK with that.
- 31:45Doesn't hurt my feelings. Another one that is probably
- 31:52Texas. OK, gotcha.
- 31:55So one that I feel is probably one of the biggest.
- 32:00And to me, I feel like they've amplified it even more ever
- 32:04since 2022. Now, I know that's been four
- 32:07years ago, but the hidden hooker LED Tennessee Volunteers team
- 32:13Alabama comes in, It is absolutely hyped on college game
- 32:17day. Pat McAfee is absolutely rooting
- 32:20for him. Peyton Manning and Tennessee
- 32:21alumni is absolutely rooting for him.
- 32:25You know, the, the, the atmosphere and everything even
- 32:27on TV was absolutely crazy. But Alabama versus Tennessee the
- 32:32third Saturday in October. Alabama has won a majority of
- 32:37the contest stating all playback to 2007 and Nick Saban's first
- 32:43season in Tuscaloosa. And but prior to that, Alabama
- 32:48only held about A5 game-winning, you know, 5 game wins ahead in
- 32:53the series. And Tennessee actually held a
- 32:57majority of the lead from the 90s all the way to the 2000s.
- 33:01But as it currently stands, Alabama leads, I believe now
- 33:05with the last couple of years, they lead over 60 to I think
- 33:09Tennessee's 40. If I did my, if I did my math
- 33:13right, Joy. I'm a sucker for a smart Aggie
- 33:16engineer. I mean, they're an engineer.
- 33:18Like they're smart. I mean, that's just smart right
- 33:20there as far as them being Aggie, but I do get it.
- 33:28One of the other ones that again I feel is personal and then
- 33:31again it just kind of adds to my dislike for Alabama, Alabama
- 33:35versus LSU the first Saturday in November.
- 33:39Now to also give you an idea of the SEC and a lot of these
- 33:43conferences, there used to be divisions and for the for the
- 33:47SEC, it was the SEC West versus the SEC East.
- 33:51And geographically, for the most part, that made sense until
- 33:55Mizzou and Texas A&M came in and then they made it weird.
- 33:58So I'm not going to try to explain that and make it
- 34:00confusing because I want to be 100% honest.
- 34:02It doesn't really make sense because they didn't want to
- 34:04move. They didn't want to move teams
- 34:05that were already in the SEC West over to the SEC East where
- 34:08it would have made more sense. So they kept one in the SEC
- 34:11West, but then they moved to technically W team over into the
- 34:15East and it just, it made no sense.
- 34:17I'm not. I'm not going to try to confuse
- 34:19anybody or do anything with that.
- 34:23So to give you an idea, so the SEC West existed for over 32
- 34:27years. Alabama and LSU combined to win
- 34:29that division 22 times between both of them.
- 34:34So you got to think there's only 10 years where another team won
- 34:38the SEC West that wasn't named Alabama or LSU.
- 34:42And then one of those two teams had made it to the SEC
- 34:45Championship in the last few years as well.
- 34:48Typically recently, it's been more either Georgia or Alabama,
- 34:53but LSU has been one of the few teams that has not only been
- 34:55able to sneak in there, but also been able to win it.
- 35:00Both teams have been ranked in the AP Top 25 and 16 out of the
- 35:03last 18 installments of the series.
- 35:07And then for whatever reason, whenever they face, there's
- 35:09always something big. Alabama does unfortunately hold
- 35:14a hefty lead in the series with almost sixty wins.
- 35:18LSU hasn't even broke the 30 mark yet.
- 35:20Unfortunately. That's kind of the other thing
- 35:23some people consider a very quote UN quote 1 sided rivalry
- 35:27like that. Not really a rivalry.
- 35:30Some do, some don't. It's it it kind of depends on
- 35:33who you ask. Another one that can that can
- 35:37say that concerns and contains my Tigers Florida versus LSU.
- 35:43They've met only 70 times, but no one can say that they haven't
- 35:46been eventful. It's hard not to route.
- 35:48Love a rivalry that features a game in which Florida defensive
- 35:50back Marco Wilson throws A cleat to 15, leading to a 15 yard
- 35:55penalty and a 57 yard game-winning field goal for LSU
- 36:00is also ridiculously competitive and has featured several clashes
- 36:03between national championship caliber teams.
- 36:06At the time, it was Florida versus Florida led the series 33
- 36:12to 31. That was in 24.
- 36:14I believe they're both one and one since then.
- 36:17So if I didn't, if I'm doing my math right, I believe that would
- 36:20mean Florida leads 34 to 32. And if I did my math right, my
- 36:28Louisiana teams, I know, I know joy.
- 36:33And then one that again, it's considered a rivalry.
- 36:39It's very, very one sided. But from what I've heard and
- 36:44even from what I've seen on on TV, just watching it kind of in
- 36:47passing, Kentucky versus Tennessee, huge rivalry.
- 36:54Kentucky historically in football has not been the
- 36:57greatest. It's not like they're a
- 36:59perennial powerhouse. It's not even like they've been
- 37:01a perennial powerhouse in the last few years.
- 37:05Tennessee unfortunately, hasn't made it to the SEC championship
- 37:08game since 2007. Kentucky hasn't competed for a
- 37:12title since the divisional split, but they just have an
- 37:16absolute dislike for each other. One of them.
- 37:19I know Tennessee typically has the orange white checkerboard,
- 37:22and then Kentucky kind of copied that with the blue and white
- 37:25checkerboard. And as it stands right now,
- 37:29Tennessee has a very comfortable lead of again at the time, 83 to
- 37:3526. I don't believe Kentucky has won
- 37:39that match up against them in the last couple years.
- 37:42Even if they have there, you still haven't hit the the 30
- 37:45mark yet. So again, very one sided.
- 37:48Tennessee, I will say is a fun fact, kind of one of the few
- 37:52teams that in the SEC that I also don't mind and I kind of
- 37:55root for just because of some, some good friends that we, that
- 38:00I know some guys that I used to serve with in the military.
- 38:04They, they either go to Tennessee or have gone to
- 38:06Tennessee and they root for Tennessee having gone down to
- 38:09Tennessee. I liked it.
- 38:10My mom was born in Tennessee. So I have a lot of ties and
- 38:14reasons to like Tennessee. And again, they're, they're kind
- 38:17of one of those teams that I don't feel, I never felt like
- 38:21the disrespect from Tennessee that I have from like some of
- 38:24the other teams and whatnot. So Tennessee always kind of gets
- 38:27a gets a pass in my book as far as SEC teams and who who I would
- 38:32truly root for if LSU was out of the playoffs.
- 38:36Who else I'd root for in the SEC?
- 38:38It would probably be Tennessee. Another one that again, now that
- 38:43Texas has joined into the SEC, it can be more of a a regular
- 38:48rivalry, but it is technically an old Southwest Conference
- 38:50matchup of Arkansas versus Texas.
- 38:55I don't believe they have faced since.
- 38:57Maybe they have since Texas joined, but Texas does leave the
- 39:01series pretty comfortably. 53 to 20 or 56 to 23.
- 39:07Another one, especially one, and again, if you're a significant
- 39:10other who loves college football, follows it.
- 39:13This is going to be an absolutely huge matchup.
- 39:17Ole Miss versus LSU, the Magnolia Bowl.
- 39:21Now part of the reason behind this.
- 39:24LSU's new head coach Lane Kiffin was just previously the head
- 39:29coach of the Ole Miss Rebels. So recently in fact, that he
- 39:33left the team as they were going into their playoff run to go
- 39:37coach the LSU Tigers. Now in Lane's defense, he did
- 39:40want to stay at Ole Miss and continue to coach them through
- 39:43the playoffs. However, the AD and the
- 39:47president of Ole Miss didn't believe that one.
- 39:49That was appropriate because they were afraid of Lane
- 39:52poaching players to take with him to LSU, especially if they
- 39:56had any eligibility and could transfer in the portal.
- 40:00And old Miss kind of feels slighted because they were
- 40:03willing to offer him the same amount of money that he got at
- 40:05LSU. But Lane felt that the
- 40:08resources, the brand power, the prestige, pretty much everything
- 40:12that you would look for as far as intangibles, the log history
- 40:16set up and the legacy of LSU was more attractive than Ole Miss.
- 40:20Now he's since come out with some crazy stuff as to why he
- 40:24left Ole Miss, why he had trouble recruiting there again.
- 40:28That's it. I'll if you do the research, I
- 40:32will let you be the decision of the judge of that.
- 40:34I don't want to try to influence your your thoughts on it.
- 40:37To me, it's just OK Lane, whatever you say like this.
- 40:41This is just the beginning of the lane train.
- 40:46But LSU does have a pretty comfortable lead, even though
- 40:50Ole Miss did get the win last year, they've kind of traded
- 40:54blows back and forth. LSU does lead the series with
- 40:57over 60 wins to Ole, misses little over 40.
- 41:01Another big LSU rivalry that they have is with Arkansas.
- 41:05And again, they actually played long before Arkansas even joined
- 41:11the SEC. They kind of played sporadically
- 41:14all the through the years all the way up until 1992, when the
- 41:17Razorbacks finally moved over in 91.
- 41:20They the SEC even introduced a trophy, the Battle of For the
- 41:24Boot, formed by the outline of Arkansas and Louisiana in 1996
- 41:31to help bring some prestige in the rivalry.
- 41:33Razorback fans have had plenty of animosity towards LSU, though
- 41:36the feelings may not be entirely reciprocated with the Tigers
- 41:40already full Ledger of sworn enemies.
- 41:43And again, prior to the last couple of years, LSU leads the
- 41:47series with over 40 wins to Arkansas's 20, a little over 20.
- 41:53And again, another Southwest classic from the move you have
- 41:57Texas A&M versus Arkansas. This one has been pretty regular
- 42:01since Texas A&M joined in 2012, and they actually only put a
- 42:06pause on it. And yeah, so they left for the
- 42:12SEC in 91. The rivalry is officially put on
- 42:14ice until 2009 when it was brought back as a Southwest
- 42:18Classic. The name stuck following the
- 42:20Texas A&M's move to the SEC in 2012, so it was only gone for a
- 42:24few years. But since then, Arkansas
- 42:27actually leads the series with a little over 40 wins to Texas
- 42:31A&M's, a little over 30, and then again, another one of
- 42:35these. It's a very one sided rivalry,
- 42:37but it is there. Tennessee versus Vanderbilt,
- 42:41there are two in state rivalries.
- 42:43They've played each other for a long time.
- 42:46They're right at 118 games and counting.
- 42:48There are only four SEC rivalries that have actually
- 42:50been played more than that. And technically, Vanderbilt did
- 42:55dominate the early matchups 100 years ago, but has done well to
- 43:01secure five wins since 2012. But the Tennessee's considerable
- 43:06resources have created a gap in between the two schools that
- 43:08might steadily grow in the NIL era.
- 43:11No, I do remember, I believe last year Vandy was able to get
- 43:15the win against Tennessee, but Tennessee still leads the series
- 43:18by almost they're almost at eighty wins to Vandy's little
- 43:24over 30. I don't have it on here on the
- 43:27graphic, but it is, I guess, technically a rivalry.
- 43:31This is one that, I mean, I've, I've heard of it, but it, it's
- 43:37not really the, the first thing I think of when it comes to
- 43:42rivalry. You have Georgia versus South
- 43:44Carolina. South Carolina considers
- 43:47Clemson's its biggest foe and of course the Clemson Tigers are in
- 43:50the ACC. Georgia and South Carolina don't
- 43:54necessarily get along. It's very one sided.
- 43:57Georgia leads with over 50 wins to South Carolina, hasn't even
- 44:02cracked 20 yet. So it's not exactly a big
- 44:04rivalry. Another one that's on here is
- 44:07Mizzou versus Oklahoma. Again, they played a lot when
- 44:11they were both with the Big 12. The annual series ended in 95.
- 44:16They really haven't played each other months since 2011.
- 44:20Apparently there was a rivalry trophy, the Tiger Sooner Peace
- 44:23Pipe, and it went missing in 1975.
- 44:27The Sooners lead the series pretty easily.
- 44:30Six with over 60 wins, almost 72.
- 44:33Masseuse little over 20. Then you have Arkansas versus
- 44:37Mizzou again, they they liked clinging to a lot of the more
- 44:41geographical rivalries and whatnot.
- 44:42It's conceived the battle line trophy and Mizzou has won eight
- 44:47of the last 10 games and Mizzou actually leads the very kind of
- 44:51actually short small series. I thought this would be a little
- 44:53bit longer. Mizzou leads over ten wins to
- 44:57Arkansas only has four now. Again, that might have changed
- 44:59the last couple years. I don't remember off the top of
- 45:01my head, but it is possible. And then one, oh, I actually
- 45:07failed to put this on here, darn it, I thought I did Mizzou
- 45:11versus South Carolina, the Mayor's Cup.
- 45:13And again, this mainly happened because Mizzou transitioned into
- 45:16the SEC. And if I, if I do remember
- 45:19correctly, Mizzou was the quote UN quote western team that they
- 45:23moved over to the SEC East. And then as a result, that means
- 45:27they were going to face a lot of the SEC East teams like South
- 45:30Carolina. It's also known as the Battle of
- 45:33Columbia because there are two of the few universities that
- 45:36they are named in the exact same cities, just a completely
- 45:39different states. Because you have Columbia, SC
- 45:43and you have Columbia, MO, where both of these schools play and
- 45:47are hosted at. Apparently Mizzou needed to
- 45:51manufacture some bad blood when it left the Big 12 behind and
- 45:54hopefully grow some roots into the SEC transition.
- 45:58And Mizzou currently leads to series 9:00 to 5:00, and that
- 46:01was back in 2024. So again, the SEC is probably
- 46:08one of my favorites. Don't be wrong, I like the Big
- 46:1110. There are rivalries there.
- 46:14But for me, the Big 10, it feels like there's only a couple
- 46:18really deep hated rivalries here and there, like Michigan versus
- 46:21Michigan State, Ohio State versus Michigan, Wisconsin
- 46:26versus Minnesota. You have Wisconsin versus Iowa
- 46:29versus Nebraska, Nebraska versus Iowa, like kind of more of
- 46:33those. But then after that, you could
- 46:36say Iowa or not Iowa, Indiana versus Purdue, it's like that.
- 46:40That's kind of deep. But again, that's more just for
- 46:42like fans here in Indiana. So the, the rivalries to me
- 46:48aren't as deep in like hatred as it is for the SEC.
- 46:53And that's probably what I like about it the most.
- 46:54And that's what a lot of people care for the most with the SEC.
- 46:58It is that it, it values more of the traditional college football
- 47:02of what a lot of us have grown up with, what a lot of us
- 47:05watched for. You know, the last 20 plus years
- 47:09has been SEC football. It's been the SEC, it's been
- 47:12more of the, the consistent kind of the the thing that when you
- 47:17turn on the TV, no matter how much the world changes, the SEC
- 47:21is still there and the SEC still does what the SEC does.
- 47:24So that is all of the Power 4 conferences, the ACC, the Big
- 47:3010, the Big 12 and the SEC. I'll be honest, I have a few
- 47:36ideas of what I want to do next week to hopefully keep the
- 47:40college football for dummy series going.
- 47:44If you want, let me know in the comments what you think.
- 47:47You're on YouTube, Facebook, Spotify, wherever you get your
- 47:50podcasts. You can connect with me anywhere
- 47:52on social media. Let me know what you think if
- 47:56you would want me to do an episode.
- 47:57As far as the group of 6 conferences, and when I say
- 48:02group of 6, there's so many I'm going to try to remember all on
- 48:05top of my head. There's the PAC 12, there's the
- 48:08AAC, there is the Sunbelt, there is the, here's Conference USA,
- 48:16there's the Mac, there is the Mountain West Conference, there
- 48:22is the Mountain West AAC, PAC 12, Mac.
- 48:30I definitely feel like I'm forgetting.
- 48:33So no, I, I'm definitely forgetting at least one, maybe 2
- 48:36conferences that, that that's very, very possible.
- 48:40I'll have them all if you, if you, if you, if you want that.
- 48:44I even thought about doing an episode maybe to kind of discuss
- 48:46the top 25 as far as where are some of the ideologies that are
- 48:51behind that. I can also talk about some of
- 48:53the independence as far as Notre Dame.
- 48:55I can talk about the new College Football Playoff schedule as far
- 48:59as what some of the rules are for being able to get in, get
- 49:03into that. A few different things.
- 49:06Let me know. Otherwise, I may just kind of
- 49:08end the College Football for Dummies series here.
- 49:12We'll have a few few more episodes in between now and
- 49:14then, of course, when the season first starts, may even take a
- 49:17little bit of a break in there. We'll kind of see.
- 49:19But nonetheless, appreciate everybody tuning in.
