- 0:24Speaker 1: Thank you so much for coming out here. I'm delighted
- 0:27Speaker 1: to meet you. I'm so excited to talk to you.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Thank you. Welcome to our little slice of heaven out here.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the uh the this is the veil of
- 0:36Speaker 1: Los Angeles.
- 0:37Speaker 2: If that's a thing, can that be a thing?
- 0:39Speaker 3: It can be a thing. We'll make it a thing.
- 0:41Speaker 2: And we have a special guest here with Lucy Rights. Lucy.
- 0:44Speaker 3: She broke her arm hit by a car.
- 0:47Speaker 2: So well, her cast is very cute.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 0:50Speaker 2: How does she get hit by a car?
- 0:53Speaker 4: Yeah, she was chasing after an animal and chased right
- 0:57Speaker 4: after the wheel of the car.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Poor.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Well, as I said, all dogs welcome here. Thank you
- 1:04Speaker 2: so cool. Well, I think the best way to kind
- 1:09Speaker 2: of dig into this.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Is, uh, I'm interested in what you're doing right now.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Like you you have a house in Los Angeles, right, Yeah,
- 1:19Speaker 1: So do you spend some of your time living out here?
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:22Speaker 4: I spent part time here and part time in Colorado,
- 1:25Speaker 4: and really most of my time on the road.
- 1:29Speaker 3: For racing.
- 1:30Speaker 4: But I love it, you know, It's it's difficult. I've
- 1:33Speaker 4: always been chasing winter, so it's nice to have a
- 1:36Speaker 4: place that's warm I come back to and my dogs.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Love it here, so cool.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah, so typically you would be going to South America
- 1:45Speaker 1: during the warmer months here, right, so you're just chasing
- 1:47Speaker 1: snow year round.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:48Speaker 4: So I went to Chile a few weeks ago, and
- 1:52Speaker 4: normally we go to New Zealand, but I didn't go
- 1:54Speaker 4: this year. And yeah, we're just constantly chasing, chasing the snow.
- 1:58Speaker 4: And you know, usually October is when we go to
- 2:02Speaker 4: Europe and then November we're starting training again in Colorado,
- 2:05Speaker 4: so it's kind of NonStop. Yeah, we just have a
- 2:09Speaker 4: few months off in the summer where we're working out
- 2:11Speaker 4: in the gym.
- 2:11Speaker 2: What are you training for right now?
- 2:14Speaker 4: I mean, this is gonna be my last season on
- 2:16Speaker 4: the World Cup.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Is that official?
- 2:20Speaker 4: I've kind of said it a couple of times, but
- 2:22Speaker 4: no one really seems to believe me. So I'm just
- 2:26Speaker 4: gonna repeat myself that I'm retiring, and you know, so
- 2:31Speaker 4: I'm just I'm really going to look to enjoy this
- 2:34Speaker 4: last season and I'm hoping to break the World Cup
- 2:38Speaker 4: win record, which is eighty six and I'm.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Eighty too right now, right, Yeah, so that's my big goal.
- 2:44Speaker 4: There's also World Championships in Sweden in February. But I
- 2:48Speaker 4: really just want to enjoy this last season and have
- 2:51Speaker 4: fun with it, and you know, if I break it, great,
- 2:54Speaker 4: If not, you know, I've had a great career and
- 2:56Speaker 4: I'm just ready to.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Do something different.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Well that's a healthy person.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it didn't start off that way, but
- 3:02Speaker 4: it has now gotten to the healthy part.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Well, it's got to be interesting how it's all evolved
- 3:09Speaker 1: for you. Because as a young person you can just
- 3:11Speaker 1: train and nap and life is very contained and simple,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and you live a very large life. Right now, You've
- 3:19Speaker 1: got a ton of competing interests and all different kinds
- 3:22Speaker 1: of things that you could be doing. I would imagine
- 3:24Speaker 1: you have to say no to a lot of stuff
- 3:26Speaker 1: and fun opportunities, but based on like looking at your Instagram,
- 3:32Speaker 1: which is a terrible barometer.
- 3:36Speaker 2: That's not really oh.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Training really hard and then like having fun and then
- 3:41Speaker 1: like lots of dog stuff.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Basically, yes, I mean most of my life right now
- 3:46Speaker 4: still revolves around, you know, preparing for the ski season
- 3:50Speaker 4: and being in the gym. And I've tried to, you know,
- 3:53Speaker 4: have more fun with it and do interesting things do
- 3:56Speaker 4: like contests and a bunch of balanced stuff make it
- 4:00Speaker 4: more fun. But yeah, there are definitely a lot of
- 4:03Speaker 4: opportunities that are coming my way, and it's hard to
- 4:07Speaker 4: kind of decide what to do. And you know, it's
- 4:10Speaker 4: definitely a pivot point in my life and transition period.
- 4:13Speaker 4: And I can't say that I know exactly, you know,
- 4:17Speaker 4: the main focus of what I'll be doing next. But
- 4:21Speaker 4: I have a lot of really interesting and cool opportunities,
- 4:25Speaker 4: So I'm excited about the future. Uh, it's really weird
- 4:29Speaker 4: to still think about life without ski racing, but you know,
- 4:34Speaker 4: I know, physically, I just can't do it anymore. And
- 4:38Speaker 4: the grind mentally of grinding physically takes its toll.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, Well there's that rumor circling around that the
- 4:47Speaker 1: Rock is going to show you around Hollywood.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Yeah, fellow under armor athletemate, Well he happened yet.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean I've definitely kind of leaned on him
- 4:59Speaker 4: as a kind of a mentor, and his road to
- 5:03Speaker 4: success is pretty incredible.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I mean, he's the world's greatest mentor. Yes, if you
- 5:08Speaker 1: could have him as a mentor, I mean.
- 5:10Speaker 3: We would all be so lucky.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Right. So I'm just like, what, you know, anytime I
- 5:15Speaker 4: have a question, I just ask him and and you know,
- 5:19Speaker 4: I went on set with him on Ballers, and I
- 5:23Speaker 4: in between takes, I was just you know, hammering him
- 5:25Speaker 4: with questions and and then he'd go and do his line,
- 5:30Speaker 4: you know, super easy, then take a break, and I'd
- 5:33Speaker 4: you know, continue hammering him. But I think that, you know,
- 5:37Speaker 4: it's definitely something that I would be interested in doing.
- 5:41Speaker 4: I'm not sure if i'd be great at it, but
- 5:42Speaker 4: he seems to think that I will be so because
- 5:45Speaker 4: you know what, we have the same mentality of just
- 5:47Speaker 4: hard work, and I think that, you know, if I
- 5:50Speaker 4: have that opportunity, i'd work really hard to be good
- 5:53Speaker 4: at it.
- 5:53Speaker 2: So well, you're both grinders.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure, definitely definitely grinders.
- 5:57Speaker 1: And I don't know where that guy's source of energy
- 6:01Speaker 1: comes from.
- 6:01Speaker 2: There seems to be.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Limit that's I said.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I'm like, I need at least like eight or nine
- 6:06Speaker 4: hours of sleep, you know, I don't know how you
- 6:08Speaker 4: survive on this grind that you have going. And he's like, no,
- 6:11Speaker 4: I get, you know, six or seven hours. I'm like,
- 6:15Speaker 4: you wake up at three am.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Right every day, so I don't know what math you're doing.
- 6:19Speaker 1: But crazy inspiration all that, He'll like fly all the
- 6:23Speaker 1: way to Europe from LA and then arrive at like
- 6:25Speaker 1: three in the morning and immediately go work out, and you.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Know it's crazy cool.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I love it.
- 6:31Speaker 1: But before that, you're still training right now and you're
- 6:34Speaker 1: trying to balance all of that with all the fancy
- 6:37Speaker 1: stuff that you get to do. What does that training
- 6:39Speaker 1: look like and how do you, you know, maintain that
- 6:43Speaker 1: level of intensity and focus. Like, I know, you're a grinder,
- 6:46Speaker 1: it's like your disposition. It's probably not hard for you,
- 6:49Speaker 1: but at the same time, it is different than when
- 6:51Speaker 1: you were eighteen nineteen years old.
- 6:53Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a lot different. I mean, just based on
- 6:57Speaker 4: my injuries, it makes things so much hard harder. You know,
- 7:01Speaker 4: my my workouts are all kind of modified to.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Just do what I can do. Basically. You know, I
- 7:08Speaker 3: can't jump, I can't run.
- 7:10Speaker 2: You know I can't jump. You can't run. Come on,
- 7:14Speaker 2: I was.
- 7:16Speaker 4: I was able to jump until recently and now it's
- 7:19Speaker 4: just I'm bone on bone. Wow.
- 7:22Speaker 3: So I just it's it's it's had enough, and yeah,
- 7:26Speaker 3: to stop doing that. You're running. I've never been good
- 7:27Speaker 3: at running, so like, let's let's be honest.
- 7:29Speaker 2: But you're on the bike a lot, right, You're on
- 7:31Speaker 2: the bike all the.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Yeah, every day.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I mean you ride out the worst two
- 7:35Speaker 2: or just.
- 7:35Speaker 3: All when I'm home in Colorado.
- 7:37Speaker 4: I can't say that Los Angeles is the best place
- 7:39Speaker 4: for road biking.
- 7:40Speaker 2: If you come up here, it's pretty good.
- 7:42Speaker 3: But it's hot.
- 7:43Speaker 2: It's not like degrees no, not right now.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Well it's Ocober and yeah it's almost ski seasons, but yeah,
- 7:53Speaker 4: it's I love I love biking outside, you know, in
- 7:56Speaker 4: the mountains. It's it's pretty incredible in Colorado. But it
- 8:01Speaker 4: can get really monotonous, you know. And then you know,
- 8:05Speaker 4: before I ski, you have to warm up my knee
- 8:07Speaker 4: and work out for like forty five minutes.
- 8:09Speaker 3: You know, it's a it's just a process.
- 8:11Speaker 4: It's not even remotely close to what I did when
- 8:14Speaker 4: I was, you know, eighteen nineteen years old. I used
- 8:17Speaker 4: to just get up and go and you get on
- 8:19Speaker 4: the hill and you just bomb down the mountain and
- 8:22Speaker 4: you know, that's it. And now it's like this whole
- 8:25Speaker 4: long process because I'm old and more down.
- 8:29Speaker 2: You're talking to somebody who's fifty two, Like, I get.
- 8:31Speaker 4: It, I know, but you're like, you love pain, you
- 8:33Speaker 4: do like you used to do, travels and stuff.
- 8:35Speaker 3: You're crazy.
- 8:36Speaker 1: I'm a grinder, but I'm like, you know, my level
- 8:38Speaker 1: of grind isn't anything like yours. Uh, you know, and
- 8:41Speaker 1: I think and certainly you know, I haven't had I
- 8:44Speaker 1: haven't sustained the kind of injuries that you've had. I mean,
- 8:46Speaker 1: it's it's impossible to even keep track of all the
- 8:50Speaker 1: things that you've had to weather through, Like, I mean,
- 8:53Speaker 1: how many pins and screws do you have in your body?
- 8:56Speaker 2: I mean you got scars all over you.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I mean this is like, you know, the laundry list
- 9:02Speaker 1: of injuries that you've had would have just ended the
- 9:05Speaker 1: career of most people, or at least.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Sidelining them for much longer than you.
- 9:10Speaker 1: But You've you've had this ability to always come back,
- 9:13Speaker 1: always come back, always come back, like always overcome the obstacle,
- 9:16Speaker 1: and like continue to show up, show up, show up.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I think, you know, it's hard to
- 9:22Speaker 4: beat the person that never gives up. You know, It's
- 9:24Speaker 4: just I have a passion for what I do. And
- 9:28Speaker 4: you know, everyone has their ups and downs, Everyone has
- 9:31Speaker 4: their obstacles they have to face. Maybe mine are worse
- 9:35Speaker 4: than most, but not the worst that others have had.
- 9:37Speaker 4: So you know, I always try to keep thinking things
- 9:40Speaker 4: in perspective and understand that I am still really lucky
- 9:43Speaker 4: to be able to do what I do, and I
- 9:46Speaker 4: just work as hard as I can, and if I'm
- 9:50Speaker 4: successful after injury, then great, If not, I'm still doing
- 9:53Speaker 4: what I love.
- 9:53Speaker 3: So you know, to me, there is no downside in
- 9:56Speaker 3: trying your best.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Was there ever a moment after sustaining one of these
- 10:01Speaker 1: injuries where you just.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Thought, like, that's it, I'm done.
- 10:06Speaker 4: My arm injury was pretty bad because I couldn't use
- 10:08Speaker 4: my hand.
- 10:09Speaker 1: That was in sixteen, right, Uh yeah, yeah, yeah, so
- 10:13Speaker 1: you lost the feeling in your hand for quite a while.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Yeah, for about two months. I couldn't move my hand,
- 10:20Speaker 4: and I thought, you know, not only am I not
- 10:22Speaker 4: skiing again, but I'm not going to be able to
- 10:25Speaker 4: eat food or sign my I couldn't sign my name,
- 10:28Speaker 4: I couldn't write the alph a bit I could really
- 10:30Speaker 4: hold a pencil.
- 10:31Speaker 2: So how long did it take before the feeling came back?
- 10:35Speaker 4: I started to be able to move my hand, like
- 10:37Speaker 4: move the fingers after about a month, and then I
- 10:39Speaker 4: again like full strength. It probably took like four or
- 10:42Speaker 4: five months, but it was really scary because your knee
- 10:46Speaker 4: it's you know, it's it's your knee. You're going to
- 10:48Speaker 4: get better. You just have to be patient, do the work,
- 10:51Speaker 4: and it'll turn around. But with my hand, you know,
- 10:54Speaker 4: they didn't they couldn't really give me an estimate. They're like,
- 10:58Speaker 4: we don't know, could get better, not get better. You
- 11:00Speaker 4: could have no function on your hand ever again, you know,
- 11:04Speaker 4: and that was pretty scary.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Because those nerves have to regenerate right and grow, and
- 11:08Speaker 1: they grow very very slowly. Yeah, so did you continue
- 11:11Speaker 1: to train throughout that or yeah, you like taped your
- 11:15Speaker 1: hand to the ski poles, right, Well, I try.
- 11:17Speaker 4: I was skiing in that, like I when my hand
- 11:20Speaker 4: got cold, I lost a bit of feeling and I
- 11:25Speaker 4: just dropped my poll a couple of times. And so
- 11:28Speaker 4: to me, it's not worth, you know, losing a race
- 11:31Speaker 4: because I simply dropped my pole.
- 11:33Speaker 3: So I just duct taped it to my hand and
- 11:35Speaker 3: moved on.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Well, I think that that, you know what really, I mean, certainly,
- 11:42Speaker 1: you're unbelievably talented and you've been at the top of
- 11:45Speaker 1: your game for for so long. But I think people
- 11:49Speaker 1: who don't really understand or know that much about you
- 11:51Speaker 1: just think, oh, well, she's the greatest skier of all time.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Like she's out there, she she just wins everything constantly.
- 11:57Speaker 2: But when you really drill down.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Into your career, it's it's like, you know, it's like
- 12:02Speaker 1: high highs and low lows consistently throughout right. It's just
- 12:06Speaker 1: it's marked with a million setbacks, way more than you
- 12:09Speaker 1: know somebody. You know, I've followed your career and then
- 12:12Speaker 1: I started to like really read more, you know, dive
- 12:14Speaker 1: into the details of it, and I was like, oh
- 12:16Speaker 1: my god, like you've really had to sink You've sank low,
- 12:20Speaker 1: and you've constantly come back and come back and come back.
- 12:23Speaker 1: So I'm interested in like the mindset required to do
- 12:27Speaker 1: something like that, because if I had to, you know,
- 12:31Speaker 1: if somebody asked me, like what distinguishes Lin's Yvonne from
- 12:33Speaker 1: everybody else, I think it's what's between your ears as
- 12:37Speaker 1: much as anything else.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, obviously you have to be willing to
- 12:41Speaker 4: put the work in, but I think the will to
- 12:45Speaker 4: be able to push yourself to overcome things is something
- 12:48Speaker 4: that you can't teach. You know, you either have it
- 12:51Speaker 4: or you don't, and you're either willing to sacrifice things
- 12:54Speaker 4: and push yourself where you're not.
- 12:56Speaker 2: And what is it like? Yeah, how do you define that?
- 13:00Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 13:00Speaker 4: I mean I think there's it's you know, it's an
- 13:03Speaker 4: element of grit that you know, And I've talked with
- 13:06Speaker 4: several people about this. It's hard to really say, you know,
- 13:12Speaker 4: what is grit and how do you get it?
- 13:14Speaker 3: Is it something that you learn? Can you teach it?
- 13:17Speaker 3: I don't think you can.
- 13:18Speaker 4: I think I mean, I think I learned definitely from
- 13:21Speaker 4: my grandfather and my father on you know what work is,
- 13:24Speaker 4: and you know, you just shut up and do the job.
- 13:27Speaker 4: You know, there's there's no complaining, There's there's no reason
- 13:30Speaker 4: to you know, you could have life a lot worse
- 13:32Speaker 4: than what you do. So you know, you're given a
- 13:36Speaker 4: task and you just have to accomplish it no matter what.
- 13:38Speaker 4: So I think there's an element of that that's ingrained
- 13:41Speaker 4: in me from from those two figures in my life.
- 13:44Speaker 4: But I think it's also that I'm just passionate about
- 13:48Speaker 4: ski racing.
- 13:48Speaker 2: You know.
- 13:48Speaker 4: I think if you're passionate about something and you're willing to,
- 13:52Speaker 4: you know, push yourself that hard, you're willing to go
- 13:56Speaker 4: the extra mile that maybe others wouldn't. It's an and
- 14:00Speaker 4: it's not just about skiing, it's really about anything.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 4: You know, most of the people that are highly successful
- 14:04Speaker 4: are not the best at what they do or the
- 14:06Speaker 4: most talented at what they do, but they're willing to
- 14:09Speaker 4: work harder than everybody else.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Yeah, And how do you maintain that level of passion
- 14:15Speaker 1: over the years and years and years.
- 14:17Speaker 2: It has to like wax and wane.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Right, There's got to be moments where you're like, I'm
- 14:20Speaker 1: not feeling so passionate right now.
- 14:23Speaker 4: I mean, there are definitely times when you wake up,
- 14:25Speaker 4: you know, at four or five in the morning and
- 14:27Speaker 4: it's you know, it's not fun to do that, But
- 14:30Speaker 4: whenever I'm on the mountain, I really enjoy it. And
- 14:35Speaker 4: there's I think it's also at this point a way
- 14:38Speaker 4: of therapy for me, you know, with everything that goes
- 14:41Speaker 4: on in my life, I think that ski racing is
- 14:44Speaker 4: my outlet. You know. It's the one place where you know,
- 14:47Speaker 4: I can control everything and I have the freedom to
- 14:52Speaker 4: do what I want. And it's it's a weird image
- 14:58Speaker 4: to think about life without that therapy. You know, I
- 15:02Speaker 4: don't really know that's a that's probably not a good thing,
- 15:06Speaker 4: but you're but you're.
- 15:07Speaker 2: So involved in so many other things, all right, Yeah.
- 15:09Speaker 4: I mean I'm not worried about that necessarily. It's just,
- 15:13Speaker 4: you know, that's where I think the passion comes from,
- 15:16Speaker 4: is because it's that's ski racing is like my place,
- 15:18Speaker 4: you know, It's it's where I'm the happiest. And that's
- 15:23Speaker 4: why it's easy for me to keep pushing to get
- 15:25Speaker 4: back to it because it just makes me happy.
- 15:28Speaker 1: What do you think it is that that distinguishes a
- 15:31Speaker 1: good ski racer from a great ski racer? Like, what
- 15:34Speaker 1: is the what is like the one attribute of that
- 15:37Speaker 1: specific discipline that is crucial to reach, you know, the
- 15:42Speaker 1: highest level of the sport. That might be different from
- 15:45Speaker 1: playing basketball or you know, any other given discipline.
- 15:50Speaker 4: I think there's an element of fear that you just
- 15:53Speaker 4: can't have if you want to be highly successful at
- 15:55Speaker 4: ski racing. You know, you have to be willing to
- 16:00Speaker 4: crash and crash hard and get back up and keep
- 16:04Speaker 4: doing it. You know, it's not like basketball where you know, okay,
- 16:10Speaker 4: you're running into some guy, you get.
- 16:11Speaker 3: An elbow to the face.
- 16:13Speaker 4: That's not the same as you know, crashing at eighty
- 16:16Speaker 4: five miles an hour. And I just think that it's Uh,
- 16:22Speaker 4: it's again, it's something that you either have or you don't.
- 16:26Speaker 3: And I think.
- 16:28Speaker 4: I've always been the person that's really crazy and I've
- 16:32Speaker 4: never had that fear. And even since I was, you know,
- 16:35Speaker 4: nine years old, I was skiing downhill and everyone thought
- 16:38Speaker 4: I was nuts.
- 16:39Speaker 1: But right you were like me, it was like a
- 16:41Speaker 1: Comakazi film like Day One, just crazy. Yeah, I mean
- 16:44Speaker 1: I think it is true, like you either have that
- 16:46Speaker 1: or you don't. But if you have it, you can
- 16:49Speaker 1: still lose it. And as somebody who's suffered these crazy
- 16:53Speaker 1: injuries and horrible crashes, a normal person would would would
- 16:59Speaker 1: probably have even if it's just the slightest bit of hesitation. Right,
- 17:03Speaker 1: that's the difference between podium and you know, fiftieth place. Yeah,
- 17:07Speaker 1: in a sport where you know, it's it's measured in
- 17:10Speaker 1: you know, yeah, hundreds of the seconds. So even that
- 17:14Speaker 1: like almost instinctual, impulsive, like you know, reaction that makes
- 17:19Speaker 1: you hold back just a little bit because your leg
- 17:22Speaker 1: bent the wrong way and the last time.
- 17:24Speaker 2: You made that move, you know, how do you override that.
- 17:27Speaker 1: And still get into that zone where that is not
- 17:32Speaker 1: a factor in how you're making those tiny little decisions.
- 17:37Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 17:37Speaker 4: I mean it's I think most people that have been
- 17:40Speaker 4: injured and say they do have that hesitation and it
- 17:43Speaker 4: takes a while to get over it. I for some
- 17:46Speaker 4: reason don't have that, which is maybe why crash so often.
- 17:52Speaker 2: But I just write like she never learns.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like, what's wrong with me? I just don't
- 18:01Speaker 4: I don't know. I don't see the point in being afraid,
- 18:03Speaker 4: because if you're afraid and you have that hesitation, then
- 18:05Speaker 4: you're not going to win races anyways. So try to
- 18:08Speaker 4: look at it from like a logical perspective.
- 18:12Speaker 2: But I mean, it's not logical though.
- 18:15Speaker 1: It's completely a function of your unconscious mind.
- 18:19Speaker 2: I think. I think it's weird.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it's awkward to even ask these questions because I I,
- 18:24Speaker 1: you're this is just who you are, right, and you're
- 18:26Speaker 1: being asked to explain it like it doesn't it.
- 18:29Speaker 4: But it's like, that's actually a question I get asked
- 18:31Speaker 4: a lot, and it's always a difficult one for me
- 18:33Speaker 4: to answer because I don't really know why I am
- 18:37Speaker 4: the way I am right, but that is what I am.
- 18:41Speaker 2: You've never you've always been you don't know what it's
- 18:43Speaker 2: like to be right. Yeah, it's It's interesting.
- 18:50Speaker 1: I mean because when I think about downhill ski racing,
- 18:53Speaker 1: which is a discipline so different than than anything that
- 18:56Speaker 1: you know, I ski, but that you know that I
- 19:00Speaker 1: specialize in, it's you're moving so quickly and you're making
- 19:04Speaker 1: these decisions that are so tiny, but you have to
- 19:08Speaker 1: be forecasting down the mountain and making decisions that are
- 19:11Speaker 1: impacting what you're going to do three seconds later when
- 19:14Speaker 1: you get down there. Like the level of like it's
- 19:17Speaker 1: all happening so quickly and there and there, and every
- 19:20Speaker 1: little thing is so tiny, right, Yeah.
- 19:22Speaker 4: I mean it's very similar to car racing, but you're
- 19:24Speaker 4: not you don't have the protection of a car. Uh huh.
- 19:27Speaker 1: You know.
- 19:28Speaker 4: I think it's also too Once you're adapted to going
- 19:33Speaker 4: that fast, things tend to slow down. You know, you're
- 19:36Speaker 4: able to see things more clearly because that seems to
- 19:39Speaker 4: be a normal speed.
- 19:42Speaker 3: You know, it's.
- 19:44Speaker 4: And I think there's a lot with me that's very instinctual.
- 19:49Speaker 4: You know, my reactions are as planned as possible, but
- 19:53Speaker 4: at the same time, when you're going that fast, you
- 19:57Speaker 4: are relying on your instincts, and thankfully, I think for
- 20:00Speaker 4: the most part, I have pretty good ones.
- 20:01Speaker 3: But you know, what I'm trying to win.
- 20:05Speaker 4: Sometimes I make the wrong ones and right and then
- 20:09Speaker 4: I crash.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Well, you know, if you're going for it, you know
- 20:12Speaker 2: it's going to happen, right, That's the thing.
- 20:14Speaker 4: I mean. I'd rather, you know, I'd rather go down
- 20:20Speaker 4: trying to win, then you know, get safe through the
- 20:23Speaker 4: finish line in last place. You know, I just want
- 20:26Speaker 4: to push myself and see what I'm capable of.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Yeah, So, how many races are you doing this season?
- 20:33Speaker 1: Like you got to get You're at eighty two. You
- 20:34Speaker 1: want to get to eighty six. That's you need four
- 20:37Speaker 1: more wins. How many chances at that?
- 20:39Speaker 2: I think I have?
- 20:41Speaker 3: It's got to be twenty something?
- 20:43Speaker 4: Oh wow, Okay, yeah, downhome on Super G races there's
- 20:47Speaker 4: or maybe eighteen something like that. There's like nine or
- 20:50Speaker 4: ten of each discipline. Last year I got five wins,
- 20:55Speaker 4: which was a not I mean, it was pretty good,
- 20:57Speaker 4: but it wasn't like a crazy good year for me.
- 21:00Speaker 4: So but I think, you know, the more I just
- 21:03Speaker 4: focus on enjoying my last season and just kind of
- 21:07Speaker 4: going out with a bang and not really focusing on
- 21:09Speaker 4: that record, I think the better off I'll be.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Yeah, So you're you're trying not to think too much
- 21:14Speaker 2: about that.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Overthinking is a really bad Yeah.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, well, speaking of that, I mean, how do
- 21:20Speaker 1: you kind of mentally prepare and visualize a race like
- 21:26Speaker 1: when you're in the gate, like are you at a blank?
- 21:29Speaker 1: Do you do formal practices where you visualize every aspect
- 21:32Speaker 1: of going down that mountain so that when you show
- 21:35Speaker 1: up it's just your your kind of like just presence
- 21:38Speaker 1: or how does that.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Work for you?
- 21:40Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 21:40Speaker 4: So we have in Downhill, we usually have one or
- 21:42Speaker 4: two training runs where we get to run the course
- 21:45Speaker 4: and normally I'll have a pretty good idea of you know,
- 21:49Speaker 4: what I want to do, I'll know the line, I'll
- 21:52Speaker 4: be able to visualize it, you know, at least one
- 21:55Speaker 4: hundred times leading up to the race, and when I
- 21:58Speaker 4: get in the starting gate, then I don't really have
- 22:00Speaker 4: to think about it because it's already ingrained.
- 22:01Speaker 3: In my mind.
- 22:02Speaker 4: And a lot of the times with these tracks, too,
- 22:04Speaker 4: is that it's the same course that it's been for
- 22:06Speaker 4: the last ten years, you know, fifteen.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Years, right, so I've been doing us your whole life.
- 22:10Speaker 4: Yeah, so you know a lot of times I probably
- 22:13Speaker 4: don't even need to look at the course to know
- 22:15Speaker 4: exactly what I need to do. But you know, like
- 22:20Speaker 4: I said, it's it's having that plan and being confident
- 22:22Speaker 4: in what you're doing. But then at the end of
- 22:24Speaker 4: the day, when you're in the course, you have to
- 22:26Speaker 4: have those instincts to be able to react because you
- 22:29Speaker 4: could hit you know, a patch of icy snow or
- 22:32Speaker 4: you know, the lights flat and you can't see a bump,
- 22:35Speaker 4: and you know, you go offline and then you know
- 22:38Speaker 4: you're scrambling and you have to make those instantaneous decisions
- 22:41Speaker 4: that will determine whether you win or lose the race.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:46Speaker 1: How important are our mentors to you? I mean, your dad,
- 22:50Speaker 1: your grandfather were obviously instrumental, and you becoming a skier
- 22:55Speaker 1: in the first place, and then you meet Peek a
- 22:57Speaker 1: Boo and that was a big moment for you. But
- 23:00Speaker 1: where you're at right now, do you still have people
- 23:03Speaker 1: in your life that you look to for guidance in
- 23:06Speaker 1: different areas?
- 23:07Speaker 2: Like how does that work? And how do you think
- 23:09Speaker 2: about that?
- 23:10Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 23:10Speaker 3: I definitely do.
- 23:11Speaker 4: I mean I think that, you know, from an athletic perspective,
- 23:17Speaker 4: you know there's obviously the people like Roger Fetter and
- 23:20Speaker 4: Serena and you know, I still.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Look to people people like Peekaboo, you know, as as
- 23:28Speaker 3: my idol.
- 23:29Speaker 4: But I think more so it's like my friends and
- 23:33Speaker 4: my family that keep me grounded. That's most important to
- 23:36Speaker 4: me at this point. I know, you know, I know
- 23:39Speaker 4: how to ski, I know that part of my life,
- 23:42Speaker 4: but a lot of the time I just need people
- 23:45Speaker 4: to be real with me and kind of keep me grounded.
- 23:48Speaker 4: And and that's how I'm able to stay the same person,
- 23:53Speaker 4: you know, I And I'm happy with who I am.
- 23:56Speaker 4: I don't want to change who I am. So it's
- 23:58Speaker 4: really important for me to be around on those stable
- 24:02Speaker 4: people that really can support me the way I need it.
- 24:05Speaker 1: It would be so easy for you to surround yourself
- 24:08Speaker 1: with a ton of people that just tell you how
- 24:09Speaker 1: awesome you are all the time. Yeah, it's especially in
- 24:14Speaker 1: this town, you know, and then you know, fast forward
- 24:17Speaker 1: one year from really good.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Decisions unless you have the wrong friends.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, it's a big city.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I mean, LA is a very easy target to make
- 24:26Speaker 1: fun of, and there's certainly lots of things wrong with it,
- 24:28Speaker 1: but there's all kinds of people here, and there's amazing
- 24:31Speaker 1: people doing incredible things that are influencing culture. And I
- 24:35Speaker 1: think it's a really cool place to live.
- 24:36Speaker 2: I think it just takes a little.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Bit longer to find your tribe here. Yea, it would
- 24:40Speaker 1: somewhere else, you know what I mean. So, I mean
- 24:45Speaker 1: that kind of naturally leads us into this, you know,
- 24:48Speaker 1: conversation about you as as a role model. I mean,
- 24:51Speaker 1: clearly you're a role model to a lot of people,
- 24:54Speaker 1: a lot of young women. Does that influence how you
- 24:58Speaker 1: make decisions? Like how do you kind of shoulder that
- 25:01Speaker 1: sense of responsibility?
- 25:03Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, I mean I've I've kind of always felt
- 25:06Speaker 4: that level of responsibility because I remember when I was
- 25:10Speaker 4: looking up to Peekaboo and how much of an impact
- 25:13Speaker 4: she had on me, And so when now the roles
- 25:16Speaker 4: are reverse, I definitely have always felt that, you know,
- 25:19Speaker 4: I need to conduct myself in a.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Certain way that.
- 25:24Speaker 4: You know, not only my family would approve of, but
- 25:26Speaker 4: you know, the young girls and kids that look up
- 25:29Speaker 4: to me would approve of as well. So I started
- 25:32Speaker 4: my foundation as well in twenty fifteen, and our mission
- 25:35Speaker 4: is to empower and inspire young girls. I've got camps
- 25:39Speaker 4: and scholarships and programs and and you know that's something
- 25:43Speaker 4: that's really important to me. You know, being able to
- 25:46Speaker 4: do something positive with the position that I'm in. You know,
- 25:50Speaker 4: if i'm I don't want to be just a ski racer.
- 25:53Speaker 4: You know, I want to have a positive impact on
- 25:55Speaker 4: the world and you know, help these kids accomplish their
- 25:59Speaker 4: dreams and help them try to be healthy and happy
- 26:03Speaker 4: and positive, productive humans.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Yeah, that's cool.
- 26:06Speaker 1: So it's scholarships for young women for athletes only, or
- 26:10Speaker 1: all different kinds of girls sports.
- 26:11Speaker 4: I mean, there are some scholarships we give out to athletes,
- 26:17Speaker 4: but it's mostly educational based programs like STEM, the STEM program.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a couple of random things, like a girl
- 26:26Speaker 4: wanted to be a race car driver and she couldn't
- 26:29Speaker 4: get in because she's a girl, and you know, she.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Needed extra help.
- 26:33Speaker 4: There's there's you know, a couple of really interesting stories
- 26:36Speaker 4: in there. But yeah, it's a very diverse group and
- 26:41Speaker 4: I never want to close the door to you know, anyone,
- 26:45Speaker 4: So if I can help, I will.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it's cool.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Well, it's such an amazing moment right now for women
- 26:51Speaker 1: and female empowerment. And you know, something I say on
- 26:54Speaker 1: the podcast all the time is that there's no shortage
- 26:58Speaker 1: of amazing women doing incredible things.
- 27:00Speaker 2: There's role models everywhere.
- 27:01Speaker 1: We just don't do a very good job of shining
- 27:03Speaker 1: a spotlight on them as well as we could and should.
- 27:07Speaker 1: But I feel like recent events over the course of
- 27:09Speaker 1: the past year have really shifted the ballast of.
- 27:12Speaker 2: That, and now we're.
- 27:14Speaker 1: We're seeing so much more attention and respect for incredible
- 27:21Speaker 1: women who are you know, putting their stamp on culture
- 27:25Speaker 1: in positive ways, which is really cool. Yeah, but I
- 27:29Speaker 1: think you know that on that subject of responsibility, I mean,
- 27:33Speaker 1: it's got to be difficult for you with the name
- 27:36Speaker 1: that you have and the profile that you have, like
- 27:38Speaker 1: navigating the treacherous waters of social media and like all
- 27:41Speaker 1: the you know, nonsense that goes on there. I mean
- 27:44Speaker 1: there's been you know, well documented dramas that you had
- 27:48Speaker 1: to weather through all of that, Like how do you
- 27:50Speaker 1: do you just compartmentalize that, or do you like not
- 27:52Speaker 1: read mentions, or how do you like deal with the
- 27:55Speaker 1: noise so that you can stay focused on what it
- 27:58Speaker 1: is that you're trying to accomplish and stay positive.
- 28:01Speaker 3: It's hard, all the nonsense out there, it's really hard.
- 28:04Speaker 4: I think when I'm skiing, you know, in season, it's
- 28:07Speaker 4: a little bit easier because I have that outlet of skiing,
- 28:12Speaker 4: and I don't really think twice about what people say.
- 28:17Speaker 4: It's mostly in the summer that I have a harder
- 28:19Speaker 4: time with it. You have more time on your hands,
- 28:21Speaker 4: and you know, I'm on the bike for a few
- 28:23Speaker 4: hours and I'm let's see what these people.
- 28:26Speaker 3: To see what's happening.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Never a good idea, such.
- 28:28Speaker 3: A bad idea.
- 28:30Speaker 4: And you know, before the Olympics it was, you know,
- 28:33Speaker 4: I it was there's a lot of death threats and
- 28:37Speaker 4: it was just like pretty crazy. But you know, I
- 28:42Speaker 4: try to remember. I try to think about, like, you know,
- 28:47Speaker 4: who these people are, and that they're not important people
- 28:50Speaker 4: in my life and they don't care about me, so
- 28:53Speaker 4: why should I care about them?
- 28:55Speaker 1: You know.
- 28:55Speaker 4: And that's a hard thing to keep in perspective because
- 28:58Speaker 4: it does tear you down, you know it. It is
- 29:01Speaker 4: a hard, hard and harsh world to live in.
- 29:05Speaker 3: These days. So I just do the best I can.
- 29:08Speaker 4: Some days it affects me more than others, but I
- 29:10Speaker 4: try really hard not to read things.
- 29:12Speaker 1: It's so insane that you had to that you received
- 29:15Speaker 1: death threats.
- 29:16Speaker 2: It's so crazy.
- 29:17Speaker 3: I hope you have a cliff and die. I hope
- 29:19Speaker 3: you're in a wheelchair the rest of your life.
- 29:21Speaker 2: It's just keyboard Warriors.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Every time I fell that, Like, there you go, that's karma.
- 29:28Speaker 4: Like you're a terrible person.
- 29:30Speaker 2: It's a crazy world that we live in.
- 29:32Speaker 3: My family loves me. It's matter.
- 29:35Speaker 2: It is true though, I mean, it is true.
- 29:38Speaker 3: It is true.
- 29:39Speaker 2: So what is it? Tell me?
- 29:40Speaker 1: Walk me through your training routine now, because you're a beast?
- 29:43Speaker 1: Were you a gold this morning?
- 29:45Speaker 2: I insta post.
- 29:47Speaker 4: Yeah. I hate having to beat traffic. I have to
- 29:52Speaker 4: wake up so early.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Usually I go work out at the Red Bull gym.
- 29:55Speaker 4: But yeah, normally in the mornings it's like, uh, you know,
- 30:00Speaker 4: I've got my warm up, my mobility, my knee warm up,
- 30:04Speaker 4: and then I do core lifting, balance, and then the
- 30:10Speaker 4: afternoon is biking.
- 30:14Speaker 1: So two days, like five days a week or something
- 30:16Speaker 1: like that. You got the peloton.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:18Speaker 4: I don't actually use the classes most of the time though,
- 30:21Speaker 4: which is kind of counterintuitive.
- 30:22Speaker 2: They have those ones where you can ride like through
- 30:25Speaker 2: the city.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah it's kind of cool. I like I rode
- 30:27Speaker 3: the Hawaii one and I was like, I've never been here,
- 30:30Speaker 3: but this looks really nice.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:33Speaker 4: I just you know, my my trainer has a program
- 30:36Speaker 4: and you know, like I said, it's difficult because I
- 30:38Speaker 4: can't do a lot of things that I used to
- 30:40Speaker 4: do and then I actually really need to do, but
- 30:44Speaker 4: we modify things to accommodate for my limitations with my knee.
- 30:49Speaker 1: But like core strength, explosive power type exercises, free weights,
- 30:54Speaker 1: like that's the focus of it, right.
- 30:56Speaker 4: A lot of core you know, rotational ability, a lot
- 31:03Speaker 4: of glute work, you know, cleans, power cleans, a lot
- 31:08Speaker 4: of squats that lifts, like kind of the basic you know,
- 31:12Speaker 4: core power exercises.
- 31:14Speaker 1: But then once you get to the mountain, then it
- 31:16Speaker 1: just does it just become a combination of skiing plus
- 31:20Speaker 1: all of that.
- 31:21Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like a more toned down version of my
- 31:24Speaker 4: workouts because most of my energy is going to my skiing.
- 31:28Speaker 4: But it's hard on the road when you're traveling and
- 31:31Speaker 4: racing because you don't always have the energy to be
- 31:34Speaker 4: able to do the lifting sessions. But you really need
- 31:37Speaker 4: to do the lifting sessions. Like I have a problem
- 31:40Speaker 4: during the season. I tend to get really skinny because
- 31:43Speaker 4: I just can't maintain that same level of weightlifting and
- 31:47Speaker 4: muscle mass.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Well, you're just constantly traveling from one venue.
- 31:51Speaker 3: To the next, right and also stressed.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, the very romantic way making the picture of
- 31:59Speaker 1: what that's actually like.
- 32:00Speaker 2: There's probably a lot of people who think you're just
- 32:02Speaker 2: you're cruising around in a private yet everywhere. But it's
- 32:05Speaker 2: like it's hard I drive.
- 32:07Speaker 4: I mean in Europe, you know, you drive, you race,
- 32:10Speaker 4: you know, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, you get in the car,
- 32:14Speaker 4: you pack up, Sunday night, you drive six hours.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Is there like a bus or do you drive yourself?
- 32:20Speaker 2: How does that work? Because you're a team, but you're
- 32:21Speaker 2: not really Yeah.
- 32:22Speaker 3: We're not really we yeah, we're not.
- 32:26Speaker 4: We Almost all of us have our own cars, toyotas,
- 32:29Speaker 4: and then we just I'm like, I've got so much
- 32:32Speaker 4: crap that I just fill mine to the top.
- 32:34Speaker 3: And then Lucy's my passenger.
- 32:36Speaker 2: So she goes to Europe with you.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Oh yeah, she goes everywhere.
- 32:41Speaker 4: I mean it's difficult, you know when when you're you know,
- 32:43Speaker 4: always by yourself, you know, you're in the car by yourself,
- 32:46Speaker 4: and then you get.
- 32:46Speaker 3: To the hotel.
- 32:47Speaker 4: You always come home to an empty hotel room. It's
- 32:49Speaker 4: pretty depressing. So I got Lucy to help me with that.
- 32:54Speaker 4: It's always nice to just have a friendly face It
- 32:56Speaker 4: doesn't matter if I crash or if I want. She's
- 32:58Speaker 4: always happy to see me. And right, I wish I
- 33:01Speaker 4: could travel with my two big dogs. But you know,
- 33:03Speaker 4: they're really big.
- 33:04Speaker 2: So where do they do? They live here in la
- 33:07Speaker 2: or in Vail in Colorado?
- 33:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I have some okay, Yeah, he takes care of
- 33:10Speaker 4: them when I'm not around. Uh huh.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Yeah, you got a hold. You got a bunch of
- 33:13Speaker 2: brothers and sisters, right, Yeah.
- 33:15Speaker 4: I have four, two brothers and two sisters, the lower
- 33:17Speaker 4: three year triplets.
- 33:18Speaker 3: The youngest three.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Wow. So you you grew up in Minnesota and then
- 33:23Speaker 1: the whole family moved to Vale. Yeah, to support you. Right,
- 33:26Speaker 1: that's a lot of pressure on a little kid.
- 33:28Speaker 3: It was a lot.
- 33:29Speaker 4: Yeah, And you know, I'm really thankful and lucky that
- 33:32Speaker 4: I have such good siblings. You know, none of them
- 33:36Speaker 4: have resented me or you know, have held it over
- 33:39Speaker 4: me that we moved out there.
- 33:40Speaker 3: I mean, they all lost their friends, you know, we
- 33:42Speaker 3: hold were they. I was like.
- 33:45Speaker 4: Twelve thirteen, so the triplets were six seven.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Oh, well they're so young, I mean.
- 33:51Speaker 4: And Karen was Karen was ten eleven. They didn't really
- 33:58Speaker 4: mess any well with the kids there, so it was
- 34:01Speaker 4: a pretty tough transition.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Did you feel like you had to succeed to legitimize
- 34:06Speaker 1: that for the family.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Yeah, of course yeah.
- 34:09Speaker 2: And it was a weird.
- 34:09Speaker 1: It was a weird thing, like like you didn't realize
- 34:12Speaker 1: you were moving until you hadn't actually already moved.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Or something, and your parents were like, Okay, we're here.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Yeah, they were going on vacation, and then we got
- 34:20Speaker 4: there and it was like surprise, we're never going home.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Uh huh. And your grandfather was a ski jumper, right,
- 34:28Speaker 1: and then jumper dad was a.
- 34:30Speaker 4: Scare Yeah, my dad was a racer. My dad was
- 34:35Speaker 4: also he also played football. My grandfather played offense and
- 34:38Speaker 4: defense football. He was a boxer, he run track and field.
- 34:42Speaker 3: He was like, wow, yeah.
- 34:44Speaker 4: Definitely have good genetics in that sense. But I can't
- 34:48Speaker 4: say I'm like really as athletic as they are. I
- 34:51Speaker 4: have a really good feel for the snow, but I'm
- 34:53Speaker 4: not you know, I can't play basketball, I can't run
- 34:56Speaker 4: like I gave him, you know, any ball sports, and
- 34:59Speaker 4: I I have no chance.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Yeah, but would you rather be pretty good at a
- 35:03Speaker 1: whole bunch of sports?
- 35:04Speaker 3: I much rather have what I have.
- 35:07Speaker 4: You're like, my siblings are So my sister just ran
- 35:12Speaker 4: in the Chicago Marathon yesterday, really proud of her first
- 35:18Speaker 4: killed out ever to run more than like two miles
- 35:22Speaker 4: at one time. Huh.
- 35:25Speaker 2: So it's like you're like Norwegian now right, Yeah, but.
- 35:28Speaker 3: We don't feel like no, no, we are like, you know,
- 35:32Speaker 3: we're not racehorses.
- 35:33Speaker 4: We are Clydesdale's. We are built for slow and steady labor.
- 35:37Speaker 2: You know, because the woman who skis down the mountain
- 35:40Speaker 2: at like eighty.
- 35:40Speaker 4: Five miles, I'm like, I'm like a sturdy, strong like
- 35:44Speaker 4: train just barreling down the mountain. You know. It's like
- 35:47Speaker 4: we're not built for you know, I am not built
- 35:50Speaker 4: like you. I am not built for endurance.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Yeah, but I mean I can't do anything like you
- 35:56Speaker 2: do it.
- 35:56Speaker 3: So it's it all, it's all, it's all relative.
- 35:58Speaker 2: But so your sister ran the marathon. Did everybody ski
- 36:02Speaker 2: growing ski growing up?
- 36:04Speaker 4: But my one brother, Read was really the only one
- 36:07Speaker 4: that loved ski racing.
- 36:09Speaker 3: The rest of them just could care less.
- 36:11Speaker 4: My sister Karen marathon her She only won races if
- 36:16Speaker 4: we bribed her with hot chocolate at the finish, you know,
- 36:19Speaker 4: or like we got a hot chocolate waiting for you
- 36:20Speaker 4: with marshmallows and she'd be like oh yeah, yeah, or
- 36:25Speaker 4: like she had to go to the bathroom, was like, no,
- 36:27Speaker 4: you gotta hold it in, and then she's like, I
- 36:29Speaker 4: want to go.
- 36:31Speaker 2: And it sounds like your dad. I mean it was
- 36:33Speaker 2: pretty intense with your dad.
- 36:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean my dad. It seemed like my grandfather's.
- 36:39Speaker 4: Like, you know, they demanded a certain level of dedication
- 36:43Speaker 4: and you know, intensity to whatever it is you're gonna do.
- 36:46Speaker 4: You have to have pride in what you do and
- 36:50Speaker 4: do it to the best of your ability. So if
- 36:54Speaker 4: you didn't live up to your own standard, then you know,
- 36:57Speaker 4: it was It was definitely not an easy household to
- 37:00Speaker 4: live in. But I think that it was really good
- 37:03Speaker 4: because it made us better people. I can't say at
- 37:05Speaker 4: the time that I felt that way necessarily all the time, but.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Those are important life lessons. Yeah, that serve you well
- 37:12Speaker 2: later in life.
- 37:13Speaker 4: I mean, we all turned out really well, so you know,
- 37:16Speaker 4: I think they needed a good job.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and now we're that pendulum has swung very far
- 37:23Speaker 1: in the other direction where everybody gets a metal and
- 37:26Speaker 1: we're all perfect snowflakes.
- 37:27Speaker 2: And all of that.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I did not agree with that.
- 37:30Speaker 1: So, yeah, this is we'll see what the Olympic team
- 37:35Speaker 1: in twenty thirty two looks like.
- 37:38Speaker 3: With that everyone gets a gold medal.
- 37:41Speaker 2: I wouldn't be surprised, you know.
- 37:45Speaker 1: So I'm interested in how it works with all the
- 37:52Speaker 1: crazy doping controls that are going on right now.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Like I had.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Brian Fogelan here, the director of Icarus. Did you see
- 38:03Speaker 1: that movie? Unfortunately you did, So what is what's your
- 38:06Speaker 1: reaction to that?
- 38:08Speaker 3: Like it's crazy?
- 38:09Speaker 4: I mean, I you know, never I had suspicions that,
- 38:15Speaker 4: you know, some people in my sport, you know, may
- 38:17Speaker 4: or may not have done something. But it's really scary
- 38:22Speaker 4: to see that because it's been happening for clearly a
- 38:25Speaker 4: very long period of time, and you know it's been
- 38:30Speaker 4: it's a systematic problem and I don't think that they
- 38:34Speaker 4: probably have fixed it, even with what they've done to
- 38:37Speaker 4: reprimand Russia. Yeah, but it's it's just scary to think
- 38:41Speaker 4: of how if you really, if you really want to
- 38:44Speaker 4: get away.
- 38:44Speaker 3: With it, you can.
- 38:46Speaker 4: And I'm sure people want to win badly enough to
- 38:49Speaker 4: where you know they'll do something. But for me, like
- 38:53Speaker 4: I'm scared even I don't even take you know, vite
- 38:56Speaker 4: have and see like I'm scared to take anything, Like
- 38:59Speaker 4: anything that I do take, like a protein powder, you know,
- 39:02Speaker 4: has to be the NSF certified, and so like for me,
- 39:06Speaker 4: it's been a really big problem over my career to
- 39:10Speaker 4: trust anything that I'm taking, like I have to send
- 39:13Speaker 4: like if I'm taking any sort of supplement, I have
- 39:15Speaker 4: to send the whole batch out to get it tested
- 39:18Speaker 4: and certified. And so it's pretty exciting for me now
- 39:23Speaker 4: to be able to be at this point in my
- 39:24Speaker 4: career where kind of in the same direction that like
- 39:28Speaker 4: my book is, you know, as Strong as a New
- 39:30Speaker 4: Beautiful and and I think that's another part of my
- 39:33Speaker 4: legacy that is really important to me, trying to allow
- 39:37Speaker 4: people to understand what they're doing so that they can
- 39:39Speaker 4: live healthier lives and be happier.
- 39:42Speaker 3: I mean, I.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Don't I never liked working out, but until I accepted
- 39:48Speaker 4: it and you know, enjoyed it, now I feel like
- 39:52Speaker 4: I need it. You know, it makes me feel better.
- 39:55Speaker 4: I'm happier when I work out, and you know, that's
- 39:58Speaker 4: something that I want to share with people and help
- 40:00Speaker 4: them find that as well and find just their own
- 40:03Speaker 4: way to be.
- 40:06Speaker 3: Happier.
- 40:06Speaker 1: It is so difficult for an athlete of your stature
- 40:12Speaker 1: to navigate what's okay to eat and not eat. I
- 40:16Speaker 1: mean every Olympic athlete that I know, like they just
- 40:18Speaker 1: stay away from all supplements altogether because it's just too terrifying. Yeah,
- 40:22Speaker 1: and you are hearing about athletes that test dirty and
- 40:27Speaker 1: it turns out like they had a tainted protein powder
- 40:30Speaker 1: or something like that. Like you just can't trust anything.
- 40:33Speaker 1: And I know a little bit about how those labs
- 40:36Speaker 1: work where a lot of these companies are having their
- 40:39Speaker 1: products manufactured and there's so much contamination and there's very
- 40:43Speaker 1: little oversight and there's no regulation, Like you have.
- 40:45Speaker 2: No idea what's going on there.
- 40:47Speaker 1: You think you're finding something you can't trust that what
- 40:51Speaker 1: it says on the label is actually what's in there.
- 40:54Speaker 1: And if you were to take it to a lab
- 40:55Speaker 1: and test it, I can almost guarantee you that it
- 40:57Speaker 1: will look very different than what.
- 40:59Speaker 3: That nutrition is exactly.
- 41:01Speaker 4: And yeah, like you said, I mean, as an athlete,
- 41:04Speaker 4: it's it's scary to even like I don't even want
- 41:06Speaker 4: to touch I don't even look at it. You know,
- 41:09Speaker 4: those those like anything you find in like a you know,
- 41:12Speaker 4: health food store, none of that stuff is most likely
- 41:16Speaker 4: what it says it is, you know, and the percentage
- 41:19Speaker 4: of vitamins and supplements that are tainted or you know,
- 41:24Speaker 4: have products and then they're ingredients in them that aren't
- 41:27Speaker 4: actually what says on the label is like so.
- 41:30Speaker 1: High because they're cross producing these multitude of lines in
- 41:34Speaker 1: these facilities where all different kinds of products are getting
- 41:36Speaker 1: made using the same equipment.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I've been approached by a lot of
- 41:40Speaker 4: different companies, you know, throughout my career. And I know
- 41:44Speaker 4: there's some athletes, maybe not Olympic athletes, but some athletes
- 41:47Speaker 4: that have you know, more lenient restrictions on their their doping.
- 41:54Speaker 3: Rules.
- 41:55Speaker 4: You know, they've promoted other companies, But I just have
- 41:58Speaker 4: never felt comfortable, you know, saying putting my name on
- 42:02Speaker 4: a product. You know, I don't want to tell the people,
- 42:07Speaker 4: tell the public to be taking something that I wouldn't
- 42:09Speaker 4: even take. You know that I can't trust what's in it.
- 42:13Speaker 4: You know. It's it's about leading a healthy lifestyle. Life
- 42:16Speaker 4: is a workout, and you know, like I said, I
- 42:20Speaker 4: I don't I have never trusted taking anything.
- 42:23Speaker 1: What do you think people most misunderstand about you? I Mean,
- 42:27Speaker 1: there's so much press out there. People have to be
- 42:30Speaker 1: getting it wrong all the time.
- 42:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think it just in general. You know,
- 42:34Speaker 3: anyone in the spotlight.
- 42:36Speaker 4: Has you know, there's this perception that's out there, you know,
- 42:39Speaker 4: they're you know, I think most people don't know that
- 42:43Speaker 4: I have depression, and you know, they're like, oh, you're
- 42:46Speaker 4: successful and you're pretty and whatever, and it's like, why
- 42:49Speaker 4: aren't you happy? And all those things don't equal happiness.
- 42:53Speaker 4: You know, because I'm successful doesn't mean that I'm happy.
- 42:58Speaker 4: It's important for me to surround myself with with you know,
- 43:01Speaker 4: the people that I love that make me happy, and
- 43:04Speaker 4: that's you know, that's something that keeps me grounded and
- 43:07Speaker 4: keeps me going. But I just hate the misconception that like,
- 43:12Speaker 4: you know, my life's perfect and I'm happy and everything's
- 43:16Speaker 4: like Instagram, right, it's all perfect.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Well if those people had just crashed one of
- 43:22Speaker 1: the times that you carry, how does the uh, how does.
- 43:25Speaker 2: The depression work? How does that manifest? I don't know.
- 43:30Speaker 3: I mean I've had it.
- 43:32Speaker 4: I've been taking medicine for it since I was like
- 43:36Speaker 4: eighteen or nineteen, but you know, it definitely is more
- 43:41Speaker 4: difficult when I'm injured. I just take medicine, you know,
- 43:46Speaker 4: the whole every day, because I you know, it's not
- 43:49Speaker 4: worth it. It's not like, you know, you're depress, You're
- 43:52Speaker 4: gonna take an advill, you know, it's like it's not
- 43:54Speaker 4: you have to be consistent about how you're you're taking it.
- 43:58Speaker 4: And and I obviously see it there therapist, and that's important.
- 44:01Speaker 3: It definitely helps me.
- 44:04Speaker 4: Because it's difficult to talk about, you know, some of
- 44:06Speaker 4: the things in my life because I don't feel like
- 44:08Speaker 4: many people understand it. And I always feel like I'm complaining,
- 44:14Speaker 4: but you.
- 44:14Speaker 2: Know, you're not allowed to complain, you know what I mean.
- 44:17Speaker 4: You know, well, it's to do that, you know, because
- 44:22Speaker 4: this life.
- 44:23Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying is that that boxes you
- 44:26Speaker 1: into like this prison where you feel like you just
- 44:28Speaker 1: can't be who you You can't be honest about your
- 44:31Speaker 1: your real life experience because people will judge you for
- 44:35Speaker 1: that because you've you know, been privileged to have experiences
- 44:39Speaker 1: that most people will never get to have.
- 44:42Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that's tough.
- 44:43Speaker 4: And I and I understand where they're coming from because
- 44:46Speaker 4: you know, I can see it from that side as well.
- 44:48Speaker 4: But I do have my issues, and you know, it's
- 44:53Speaker 4: definitely difficult sometimes and very I'd say the hardest thing
- 44:57Speaker 4: about what I do is just being low.
- 45:00Speaker 3: You know, I'm on the road a lot.
- 45:02Speaker 4: And in an empty hotel and in an empty house.
- 45:06Speaker 3: And you know.
- 45:09Speaker 4: I'm lucky that I have a really great boyfriend, and
- 45:12Speaker 4: you know, I have three dogs, and I have a
- 45:14Speaker 4: great family and people that support me. But it doesn't
- 45:16Speaker 4: take away from the fact that I am still alone
- 45:20Speaker 4: and I do feel that really deep loneliness that really
- 45:26Speaker 4: affects me a lot.
- 45:27Speaker 3: Of the time. And so yeah, it's something that I
- 45:32Speaker 3: I am working on.
- 45:33Speaker 1: And all of that everything kind of rides on your shoulder.
- 45:36Speaker 1: It's the foundation these relationships with all of these sponsors.
- 45:40Speaker 1: I mean, you're alone in a hotel room in some
- 45:42Speaker 1: village in Europe, but there's a whole machine that's kind
- 45:47Speaker 1: of depending upon you to continually produce, produce, produce.
- 45:51Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the hard part is like I just realized
- 45:53Speaker 4: that when Lucy got run over by a car. It
- 45:56Speaker 4: was like, you know, I have all these things that
- 45:58Speaker 4: I have to do, and if I can't do them,
- 46:01Speaker 4: I don't know what happens like that, you know, the
- 46:03Speaker 4: whole system implodes, and you know I had to take
- 46:06Speaker 4: a week off to you know, take her to surgery,
- 46:09Speaker 4: and I had to cancel all these things, and it
- 46:12Speaker 4: was just kind of an interesting realization that you know,
- 46:15Speaker 4: I can't stop and I'm used to grinding, so.
- 46:18Speaker 2: It's you know, it's I mean, you don't stop anyway.
- 46:20Speaker 4: But still still it was like, you know, there are
- 46:24Speaker 4: a lot of things in motion that you know, I
- 46:27Speaker 4: have to keep in motion and I can't just stop
- 46:30Speaker 4: doing them. Yeah, a lot of people rely on me,
- 46:33Speaker 4: and uh, there is a lot of feeling that I
- 46:37Speaker 4: can't let anyone down, you know, and.
- 46:41Speaker 2: Well those are external pressures. I mean, what does it
- 46:43Speaker 2: look like on the.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Inside, Like what what is it you know, behind all of.
- 46:47Speaker 2: This that's like driving you? Like is it? I mean?
- 46:50Speaker 2: And you can say, oh.
- 46:52Speaker 1: You know, I just I want to be the best
- 46:54Speaker 1: version of myself or you know, I like to win
- 46:57Speaker 1: or whatever, but like what's beneath that, like is really
- 47:00Speaker 1: like the pilot light that is like igniting this whole
- 47:03Speaker 1: thing that keeps you like on this constant grind forward
- 47:08Speaker 1: to like excel.
- 47:11Speaker 4: I think it has to do with me not being
- 47:15Speaker 4: not ever being satisfied. I feel like I can do better.
- 47:20Speaker 4: And it's also I think a feeling I'm not being
- 47:23Speaker 4: good enough, you know somehow, you know, one win isn't enough.
- 47:27Speaker 4: I need to win to and you know that I'm
- 47:31Speaker 4: never complacent, you know, I'm never satisfied with what I have.
- 47:35Speaker 4: You know, I just have the always have that urge
- 47:37Speaker 4: to keep going. You know, I want something more, do
- 47:41Speaker 4: something that someone's never done before, you know, try something new,
- 47:45Speaker 4: you know, start my own company, you know, work with
- 47:49Speaker 4: people that no one else has worked with. It's like,
- 47:51Speaker 4: you know, I just have this drive that makes me
- 47:53Speaker 4: want to just be better, and it's not It probably
- 48:01Speaker 4: is for mixed reasons, you know, like from my from
- 48:06Speaker 4: you know, family, growing up, and you know there's I'm
- 48:09Speaker 4: sure there's a lot of psychological.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, go into that.
- 48:12Speaker 1: Yeah, And there's insecurities and all of that, these things
- 48:17Speaker 1: that we all share as human beings. I mean, you
- 48:19Speaker 1: know of course that if you're somebody who who you
- 48:23Speaker 1: know won, you know this many wins is never enough.
- 48:27Speaker 1: You know, when you get that eighty six or eighty
- 48:29Speaker 1: seven or eighty eight, it's still not going to be.
- 48:32Speaker 2: How do you peace? Right?
- 48:34Speaker 1: Why you got to you gotta like that's an inside
- 48:37Speaker 1: job for exactly.
- 48:38Speaker 4: That's definitely an inside job, and it's something that I've
- 48:41Speaker 4: had to kind of realize and work through. And that's
- 48:45Speaker 4: why I've just said, it doesn't matter what the season holds,
- 48:48Speaker 4: whether I win or I don't win, or I break
- 48:51Speaker 4: the record or I don't.
- 48:52Speaker 3: This is just it, you know.
- 48:53Speaker 4: I need to kind of, you know, really enjoy it
- 48:58Speaker 4: and soak it all in for the last time time
- 49:00Speaker 4: and then I, you know, just literally.
- 49:03Speaker 3: Move forward, start something new.
- 49:05Speaker 2: That's what you call the rocks.
