- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Dan Hurley the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show.
- 0:03Speaker 1: UH headed to Boston now, where the Huskies had great
- 0:07Speaker 1: success in the NCAA Tournament a couple of years ago.
- 0:10Speaker 1: UH playing in Boston, and I know I worked up
- 0:13Speaker 1: there for a bunch of years. Not a great college town.
- 0:16Speaker 1: But I think when Yukon comes to town and brings
- 0:19Speaker 1: that brand up there and by us on the floor
- 0:22Speaker 1: with they're great players, I gotta feel this is going
- 0:25Speaker 1: to be a fabulous environment for that game.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm not real aware like the tickets or any
- 0:31Speaker 2: of that, but you know, I think you're you're you're
- 0:34Speaker 2: trying to do. Uh. I just think about the you know,
- 0:37Speaker 2: the whole situation. B Why you you know, having a
- 0:39Speaker 2: team that you know, potentially compete for a national championship
- 0:43Speaker 2: final four, you know, with a with an incredible player
- 0:47Speaker 2: from the Boston area playing a TD Bank Yukon six
- 0:52Speaker 2: time national champs, you know two of the last three
- 0:54Speaker 2: years we won it. Yeah, I mean, you're you're hopefully
- 0:57Speaker 2: you're you're delivering, delivering, you know, like a great college
- 1:02Speaker 2: basketball opportunity for people in the region.
- 1:06Speaker 1: You know, no doubt your success on the road obviously
- 1:11Speaker 1: you contass from great teams here in the last three
- 1:14Speaker 1: four years, but sixteen and seven and true road games.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I mean, most people are happy to be five hundred
- 1:21Speaker 1: on the road. I remember pat Riley saying that one time,
- 1:25Speaker 1: if we just go one game over five hundred on
- 1:27Speaker 1: our schedule on the road, I'll be happy. But that's
- 1:30Speaker 1: quite an accomplishment. Tell me about that, playing against you know,
- 1:34Speaker 1: ranked foes on the road.
- 1:35Speaker 3: What is that?
- 1:36Speaker 1: What does that tell you about the measure of a team.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I mean that we've been good and I think that
- 1:44Speaker 2: you know, Kamani and Luke, you know, now with you know,
- 1:47Speaker 2: with Mike Nardi on board, you're beginning to help us
- 1:49Speaker 2: with the game preps. Those guys do a great job.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I think of, you know, helping me put together you know,
- 1:57Speaker 2: game plans, you know, and to be good teams. You know,
- 2:00Speaker 2: like we've been able to beat you know, I think
- 2:02Speaker 2: for the most part, we beat who were supposed to beat.
- 2:04Speaker 2: And then I think we're also having ability to you
- 2:07Speaker 2: to win big games in neutrals or rown environments because
- 2:11Speaker 2: we we we we we've got a good uh, you know,
- 2:14Speaker 2: we've got good good guys that you don't really want to.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Win twenty two and ten the Huskies against ranked foes
- 2:21Speaker 1: since the start of twenty two twenty three. The importance
- 2:25Speaker 1: of these games and in the long term for your
- 2:29Speaker 1: you know, NCAA status and those kind of things. How
- 2:33Speaker 1: important are those games against the ranked teams?
- 2:36Speaker 2: Well, I mean just you know, the games against teams
- 2:38Speaker 2: that are going to be NA tournament teams. They're just
- 2:42Speaker 2: you know, number number one, if you if you if
- 2:44Speaker 2: you win enough of them, you get in the tournament.
- 2:47Speaker 2: You got to qualify every year. And then you win
- 2:50Speaker 2: enough of them, you start really helping you seating and
- 2:52Speaker 2: seating matters. So from that standpoint, and then obviously the
- 2:56Speaker 2: ability to I think we all know what our vulnerabilities are.
- 2:59Speaker 2: We know what are we this is our But you know,
- 3:01Speaker 2: games like this they really, you know, expose the areas
- 3:05Speaker 2: that that you've got to address, because only the best
- 3:09Speaker 2: teams are able to really take advantage of the places
- 3:12Speaker 2: where you're weak. And for us, you know, guarding people individually,
- 3:16Speaker 2: one on one defense is going to come into play
- 3:19Speaker 2: versus BYU because they've got a couple of pros.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, no question. I watched them against Villanova. Uh, they
- 3:26Speaker 1: have a couple of great players, no question. Defensively, you
- 3:30Speaker 1: talk about perimeter defense and getting out on people and
- 3:33Speaker 1: making it hard to drive the basketball. Did you do
- 3:37Speaker 1: you feel like going into this stretch now against these
- 3:39Speaker 1: really good ball clubs, that your back line guys are
- 3:42Speaker 1: going to be able to help you on the weak
- 3:44Speaker 1: side and get over the block shots and and make
- 3:46Speaker 1: it even harder for teams to score against Yukon.
- 3:50Speaker 3: I mean, they are if they're doing what they're being
- 3:53Speaker 3: coached to do, if they're if they're if they're hugging
- 3:57Speaker 3: their man or you know, still.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Disappointed about the three they just missed, or what you know,
- 4:05Speaker 2: like you're you know, you're, you're you know, these coach
- 4:08Speaker 2: these guys are coached to be in spots so that
- 4:11Speaker 2: if somebody gets beat or if someone makes a mistake,
- 4:14Speaker 2: that somebody's be able to help them. You know. It's
- 4:16Speaker 2: it's what it's called, like you know, team defense or
- 4:20Speaker 2: help defense or what have you. It's like, you know,
- 4:23Speaker 2: and I think that you know, especially in years like
- 4:26Speaker 2: the last year and this year, where we don't quite
- 4:29Speaker 2: have the perimeter defenders that would allow us to just
- 4:33Speaker 2: stay at home and guard the three point line and
- 4:35Speaker 2: let you know, Donovan clean up anything that went to
- 4:39Speaker 2: the rim. But for the most part, Steph and Tristan
- 4:43Speaker 2: Newton and Andrew Jackson would just lock up perimeter people
- 4:46Speaker 2: and anything that wasn't locked up would get blocked. You know,
- 4:50Speaker 2: now we're in a different you know, we're in a
- 4:52Speaker 2: different type of situation with how we need to play defense,
- 4:55Speaker 2: and the help is much more important.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Yeah, Melachi Smith one of your transfer guards so far
- 5:01Speaker 1: twenty one minutes on average eight points a game. But
- 5:04Speaker 1: do you look at his case He's made five out
- 5:06Speaker 1: of seven threes. But do you look at his contributions
- 5:09Speaker 1: first on the defensive side or how do you view him?
- 5:13Speaker 2: I mean how I want to view him as as
- 5:14Speaker 2: a six starter, you know, But I think this Malachi defensively,
- 5:20Speaker 2: I thought he was like, you know, really good against Lowell,
- 5:24Speaker 2: and I didn't like, you know, the you know, the
- 5:27Speaker 2: way that Malchi guarded versus Columbia. You know, I just
- 5:31Speaker 2: think that, you know, he's got to play like a
- 5:33Speaker 2: veteran and he's got to be smart and slick with
- 5:37Speaker 2: how he guards, and he's got to pick a spots
- 5:39Speaker 2: with pressuring. He's got to take less chances, he's got
- 5:43Speaker 2: to be more cerebral and in the right spots, because
- 5:46Speaker 2: I think he's going to be a guy who's he's
- 5:48Speaker 2: going to be a difference maker on whether this team
- 5:50Speaker 2: could get to its potential and whether we can get
- 5:53Speaker 2: from him what we need from him to really give
- 5:57Speaker 2: us great play at the point position with both the
- 6:01Speaker 2: starter and the backup.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a feisty dude, that's for sure.
- 6:05Speaker 3: The State like to play him more.
- 6:07Speaker 2: You know, if it's if it's a game where your
- 6:09Speaker 2: solo is not guarding and jalen Is is not guarding,
- 6:15Speaker 2: you would love the flexibility to be able to play
- 6:17Speaker 2: the two point guards together and see what that looks like.
- 6:20Speaker 2: But y know, we need Malak kind of take some
- 6:22Speaker 2: strides on defense.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Yeah, you talk about the standard you're you're establishing here
- 6:27Speaker 1: and have established. He comes from Dayton good program. Obviously
- 6:31Speaker 1: we saw him out in Maui last year. They gave
- 6:33Speaker 1: us trouble. But Malachi Smith now playing at Yukon in
- 6:38Speaker 1: this level, in this stretch of games ahead of us,
- 6:42Speaker 1: what do you think we're going to learn about him?
- 6:45Speaker 2: I mean, I think you'll learn it's tough and you
- 6:47Speaker 2: know and that you know he's here's a guy that
- 6:50Speaker 2: that wants to go out and make plays. I don't
- 6:53Speaker 2: think he's got any part of him that's that's afraid.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I think he's excited about these games. But it's you know,
- 7:00Speaker 2: it's I think every programing team plays differently. There's different
- 7:04Speaker 2: principles with with with how you play the game, you know.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I just think it's just over the course of this season,
- 7:10Speaker 2: you know. And obviously it's it's early, you know, it's
- 7:13Speaker 2: you know, it's not for the for a trip to
- 7:16Speaker 2: the Final four, you know, So it's like you got
- 7:18Speaker 2: to put kind of the game in its proper perspective.
- 7:20Speaker 2: It's a big game, it's exciting, it's a big opportunity
- 7:23Speaker 2: for both teams, but it still is early.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's still November.
- 7:27Speaker 3: All right.
- 7:28Speaker 1: We'll take a quick time out back with Dan Hurley,
- 7:30Speaker 1: the Yukon men's basketball coaches show on lear Field in
- 7:33Speaker 1: a moment
