- 0:01SPEAKER_00: So this is the book we're doing.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: If you're just visiting today, it's by a guy named John Maxwell, who's been a Wesleyan pastor in uh Midwest and in California.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: And he's sort of a bigger-than-life guy.
- 0:17unknown: Yeah.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: And uh so we're going through his laws, and last week uh Rodney, you and I took the first two, which are the law of the lid.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Your effectiveness will always be capped by your level of leadership.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: So increase your leadership and multiply your efforts to succeed, and then the law of influence, which basically said, you know, you're only as powerful a leader as the number of people that you're influencing.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: So let's get into laws three and four and uh give you a little more time at your table.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Really uh like you guys getting to know each other.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I just found out this morning that one of the men, a friend of mine here in this room, his girlfriend's teenage daughter's boyfriend just drowned at oceans of fun.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot of stuff that's always going on, you know, um with the guys.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Find out what that is, make sure you know everybody's name.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: So can you take us through a little bit of this law of process?
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Um, so um a lot of times people ask me uh when they find out that I've played football for Coach Schneider, they'll come up and ask me, so what is it that made Coach Schneider so great?
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Like, what did he do?
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Uh how did he take people who had no talent?
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: And I just go, thanks.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Um, and and make them into the team uh that he's been known for.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: And if you were to look what made Coach Schneider successful, uh it would be, I think it's goal number 11 or 12, I can't remember, but his his uh his goal is consistency.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Uh that he knew that if we wanted to be the type of team that we wanted to be in November and December, that that started all the way back in January.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: And we followed consistently the same plan, the same model.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Uh it and it's funny, I we were I was asking, we were asking our coach one time, or he he kind of volunteered this information, I think.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: He goes, some of the same things that we did back in 1995 through 1999, we're still doing right now.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Coach Schneider doesn't change.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: And it it's I think it's um I think it's amazing uh his consistent pattern uh that we were still doing the same things.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: But what Coach Schneider understood is this consistency, uh which kind of leads into what John Maxwell talks about, this this law of the process.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Like our process for success uh was the same.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: And when you think about your leadership, when you think about who you are as a person, where you want to go and where you want to grow, much like Coach Schneider, he had a process in place for us to get to where we wanted to go.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Uh for us in our leadership, we needed to understand that our leadership growth uh is a process.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: That it's not gonna happen overnight like a lot of us, like me, I want it to happen overnight.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Uh Maxwell says investing in your leadership uh is a process like investing in the stock market.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: If you're trying to get rich overnight, you're not gonna be successful.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: Same thing is true with our leadership.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: We're not gonna become leadership gurus overnight.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: Um and and so as he's as he's talking in his book, he says, you know, a lot of leadership experts would tell you that it's it's your capacity to improve your skills, improve your ability, that's going to distinguish you uh from a follower to a leader.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: So if you if there is no process, if you're not a learner, if you're not continually getting better at what you do, if there's not a plan in place for you to grow, uh you're gonna get passed up by other people, and instead of being a leader, you'll become a follower.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: So how do you know where you're at in that stage?
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: How do you know where am I at in the leadership growth process?
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Uh Maxwell gives um his four laws.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: Um it's the yes, the four phases of leadership growth.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: Um and he says, uh, these are the four stages of where you're at as a leader.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: The first stage is you don't know what you don't know.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: These are people who don't uh who don't recognize the value of leadership, uh, that they don't recognize that they themselves have influence, and they don't know what they don't know about leadership, and so they can't lead.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: Um they have no ideas of the opportunities that lie in front of them, that they can learn about leadership, they can start to exercise their abilities to lead and to influence people, and they just don't know anything.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Uh most of the time they just don't care.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Um and he says this, he says, as long as you don't know what you don't know, you're not gonna grow.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: Uh and then he goes on to uh phase number two, it's I know what I don't know.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: A lot of times these are people who are first-time managers who they get into a management role and they start to lead and they look around and they go, Oh, uh, nobody's following me.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: And they learn, hey, I there's something that I don't get about leadership that I need to go and learn some skills in order for me to be able to lead other people.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: It's kind of like what we talked about last week, the uh the leadership, the management myth about people think because now I'm in a position of power that people are gonna follow me.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Says that goes out the window.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: It doesn't matter uh what your position is, um, just because you're put in charge does not mean that you're the leader.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: That you have to learn how to lead people, how to motivate people.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: Uh step number three in your leadership growth process is I grow or I grow and I know, and it starts to show.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Um it's that you start to learn about leadership principles, you start to learn about how to motivate people, how to influence people, how to lead people, and you start to grow.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: It may not be uh I and I and I think what what we need to understand here is this is not uh some astronomical you jump from a manager to leading the whole company.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: It's um, hey, I learned something last week.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: I applied it in a situation at work in life with people that I'm around, and I'm a better leader this week than I was last week.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: And you start consistently building that where it goes, hey, I'm not the same leader that I was three months ago, six months ago, a year ago, with the hope of in 10 or 15 years you get to stage number four.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: And it's I simply go because of what I know.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: This is uh this is when you're in your sweet spot where Jim, you probably feel this.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: You you simply go because of what you know, what God has put you through, the types of things that you've been able to learn over your years, that you just go.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: And you're a leader because of the things that you know.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: I'm sure a lot of you guys in this room are in that phase where you just go because you know.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: And a lot of us young guys or guys who don't know much about leadership, this is where we aim to be, where we strive to be.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: Uh sometimes I feel like I'm in, I know what I don't know and I need to grow.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: And sometimes I feel like I'm in the I grow and I know, uh, and it starts to show.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: And I feel like I fluctuate sometimes.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: But wherever you're at, as long as you're on this continuum of, hey, we're gonna, I'm, I'm gonna, even if I don't know, I'm gonna try to implement some of these things and move forward to the next one.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Um and I and then he gives, I love this quote.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Uh it's a quote by Joe Frazier, who's former heavyweight champion.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: Uh he says, you can map out a fight, um, a fight plan or a life plan, but when it when the actions start, you're down to your reflexes.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: That's where the road work shows.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: If you've cheated on that in the dark of the morning, you're now getting found out under the bright lights.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: And it made me think about um, just made me want to ask a question of uh if you were put in a leadership position today at work, somebody asked you to lead something, you got put under the bright lights, what would would you what would be found out about your training, about your discipline, about your plan to grow under the bright lights?
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Would it show that you've done nothing over the last week, three months, six months to develop your leadership?
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: Because what what you can find out when you look at somebody's daily plan, if you were to look into my life, or if I already look into your life, here's what I'm gonna find out.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna find out your priorities, I'm gonna find out your passions, I'm gonna find out your vision, your influence, I'm gonna find out the person that you are and the person that you're becoming.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: And I can I can see that all in the way that you live day in and day out.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: And if all of a sudden, if the lights were turned on in your leadership development and your leadership growth, what would that show?
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: That show that you you haven't been doing anything, that uh you've just kind of been lazy, thinking that naturally leadership will come to you.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, what's that gonna show?
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Um and uh and then he he ends the chapter uh with um in order for us to lead today, um, we must, or in order for us to lead tomorrow, we must learn today.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: He says, if you want to be a leader, the good news is that you can do it.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Everyone has the potential, but it isn't accomplished overnight.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: It requires perseverance, and you absolutely can't ignore the law of the process.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: Leadership doesn't develop a day, it takes a lifetime.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: Um, it's not gonna happen overnight uh for us to develop into the leaders that we want to be, that God would want us to be.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: Uh and while we're sitting here talking about men of success, I I if you will go back, Jim, a couple slides to the um this four stages of leadership growth.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: I just have to ask, since we're here, since we're in a church setting, uh since we all are men who are spiritual men, and we talked about a daily plan, a daily agenda, not only for our leadership, but you know, where are you on your spiritual spectrum?
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: In your spiritual disciplines?
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Are you at, I don't know what I don't know about the Lord, I don't know what I don't know about reading the Bible every day, I don't know what I don't know about praying, about being a man of God.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Where are you?
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: I think we would all like to get to the place where I simply go because of what I know.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: Some of us may be in the phase of I know what I don't know.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Or we or we're in the growth, we're in the growth phase where we where we know what we don't know and we're starting to grow.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: But as we think about our leadership, let's not forget about the spiritual life of it of are we, do we have a plan in place to grow not only in our leadership, but spiritual life as well.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: That it that spiritual life, our time with the Lord, our relationship with the Lord affects everything that we do.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: And by naturally spending time with the Lord, we'll become, I think we'll become better leaders.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: I really like that whole idea in this chapter that you don't you can't become a leader in a day, but you do become a leader daily.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: That it's all in your uh step, step, step.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: Law of process that develops daily, but not in a day.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: It reminded me of what Paul said in 1 Timothy, be diligent in these matters, give yourself wholly to them so that everyone may see your progress.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: So um, oh, and he also dropped this line in small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Uh help me with the law of navigation.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: So, chapter four, law of navigation, has to do with planning, has to do with backing up and making sure that you plan well.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Because anyone can steer the ship, but it takes a leader to chart the course.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: And what he means in this chapter is that good leaders are navigators who count the cost before making commitments for themselves and others.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Uh he talks of, he compares two trips to the South Pole in 1911, one by the Norwegian explorer Amundsen, and the other by a British explorer named Scott.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: The Norwegian guy talked to the Eskimos, they suggested taking sled dogs, letting the dogs travel just 20 miles a day and carry all the food.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Also suggested putting depots of food every once in a while, taking it easy on your group.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: He had a tremendous time.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: He planned this thing down to a T, took a group down there all the way to the South Pole.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: They discovered the South Pole.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: In that whole trip of eight months or something like that, the worst thing that ever happened to any of them was that one guy got an abscess tooth.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: At the same time, a British explorer named Scott started.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: And Scott did not plan ahead.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: He didn't set up depots, he decided that he'd have motorized sleds which broke down in the snow very quickly, and his backup would be ponies.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: The ponies couldn't handle the freezing cold, so they all got killed and eaten.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: And all of a sudden, all of that stuff was having to be lugged by the hikers themselves, carrying all this stuff because he didn't buy the right glasses ahead of time.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: They all got snow blinded, and because they didn't have snow depots, they were running out of food.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: And and they're struggling down there.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: A couple of guys died on the way down.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: They finally got there, but they got there like two months after Amundsen's group.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: And it was on the hike back that he had decided they needed to, they needed to pick up a they needed to find a whole lot of uh, you know, tundra and other stuff, bring back, you know, scientific stuff.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: So he stuck that on the backs of his men as well, and they all ended up dying on the way back.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: And the contrast that Maxwell makes is that those were both famous explorers, but one of them planned ahead of time, navigated ahead of time, saw the whole trip before leaving the dock, and the other one didn't.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: And he quotes from a navigator named Leroy Imes, whose book is called Be the Leader You Were Meant to Be, a book that I used to take all my uh the guys I was mentoring in uh through back in the 70s and 80s, who has this famous quote: A leader is one who sees more than others see, who sees farther than others see, and who sees before others see.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: So this is basically the idea.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Hey, listen, you don't just bumble into it, you know, plan ahead.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Now, Maxwell personally, when he was trying to resurrect, and and he actually turned a church in Ohio into a really growing concern, used used these uh the the for some reason I think this is hokey, but it worked for him.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: So he took plan ahead, and each one of the letters meant something.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: The P was predetermine a course of action.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: L, lay out your goals, A, adjust your priorities, N, notify key personnel.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: A, this is now the ahead word.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: You know, allow time, head into action, expect problems, point, always point to successes, daily review.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: So that's not my style, but in here he said all of this stuff was planning ahead.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: So that's really this point.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Anyone can steer a ship, but it takes a leader to chart the course.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Good navigators count the costs before making commitments for themselves and others.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: And Rodney, I couldn't help thinking of Jesus saying, which of you wishing to build a tower doesn't first sit down and count the cost to see if he has the resources to complete it and so forth.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: So, and and when I think, you know, you it's interesting, you your principle of learning, you said you said that Coach Schneider showed you that.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: I I gotta admit that when I was thinking of these principles, I thought, I've got the Coach Schneider principle because his preparation was legendary.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, he worked you guys, I think, harder than anyone else.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: So in the fourth quarter, and I think, wasn't it true?
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Didn't they beat Mississippi State in the fourth quarter?
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they did.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they were down, I think they were down like 10 points because of fumbles and stuff and came back.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: So anyway.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you want to add anything before I give them group discussion stuff?
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: No, I think I'll let you guys just I think it's uh I like the time of group, so I don't want to take away from you guys being able to discuss it.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: All right, somebody told me the guys at your table have forgotten your vital information, so you need to go around the table and forget that before you tell them again.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: That's number one.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: Uh number two, law of process.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: What has contributed the most to your growth or learning as a leader recently?
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: What's one growth step that you can commit to?
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: Is that okay?
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: And law of navigation, tell a tale of a time when you wished you'd spent more time on planning.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: I think we all have funny stories about family vacations or something like that.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Is there someone that you do run your ideas by before adopting them?
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Lead us in prayer, will you?
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Hey guys, thanks for coming and tell Steve again thanks for uh you know pulling that off with Jerry's help and so forth.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Lord, uh I pray that you would be with our time.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Um pray that you would lead this discussion, um, Lord, that it would be great fellowship, that we would be encouraged uh by one another.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: Uh we thank you for this opportunity, Lord, and uh I pray that you would receive the glory that's due your lives, Lord, that we would respond appropriately uh by living our lives uh in a way that honors you for what you've done for us.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: I pray these things in your son's name.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Amen.
