Transcript
- 0:11Speaker 1: You're a falling star. You're a getaway car.
- 0:14Speaker 2: You're the light in the sand when I go too far.
- 0:18Speaker 2: You're the swimming pool on an honest day.
- 0:22Speaker 3: And you're the perfect thing to say.
- 0:25Speaker 1: And I can't believe. Then I'm your man.
- 0:30Speaker 3: And I get to kiss you, baby, just because I can.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Whatever comes our way, I will see it through. And
- 0:37Speaker 1: you know just what a love can do.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Very good. Very good. And I know these were always
- 0:43Speaker 1: rolling in here, so that's why I didn't want to sing,
- 0:45Speaker 1: but anyway.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Yeah, we need it.
- 0:46Speaker 4: That's how we started.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Oh, you do? Yeah. Oh, fuck. So what do you
- 0:51Speaker 1: sing every time?
- 0:51Speaker 3: Oh, we make up. What was it?
- 0:54Speaker 1: Lizzo, boy. Lizzo?
- 0:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:57Speaker 1: It's a great song. No, don't. Welcome to the shed.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Big boys. Itty bitty boys. No, sorry. It's a good song.
- 1:07Speaker 1: It doesn't sound like a good song.
- 1:09Speaker 4: Take your word for it, yeah.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Just saying. They don't play it on your radio.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I hope not. Are you still on radio?
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Oh, yes, I do remember this. We should do this
- 1:21Speaker 1: before the podcast when we were, yeah. Hey, boy. What
- 1:25Speaker 1: you say, boy?
- 1:25Speaker 3: You trying to play it, guy? Like a game, boy?
- 1:28Speaker 1: I thought he says gay, boy, but he doesn't. She does, yeah.
- 1:31Speaker 3: What is this? Did you make another one?
- 1:34Speaker 1: This is dirty, man. This is dirty.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Welcome to the shed, Gerald Yau Yee for our bonus ep.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Hey, mate. Say that again, please.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Say it again.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Yau Yee.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Yau Yee. Yau Yee.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Yau Yee.
- 1:46Speaker 4: I've been saying that for years.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Is it Yee? Is it Yau Yee? Yau Yee. Look,
- 1:52Speaker 1: I've been called a lot worse, Kip, so whatever you
- 1:53Speaker 1: call me, it doesn't matter. Gerald Lomas Lee Jean. Samuel Arthur.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Mate, what have you been up to? What's going on?
- 2:02Speaker 1: Yeah, big year for me. Can you tell me what?
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I work in game development at the Broncos, which
- 2:11Speaker 2: means I look after junior clubs, develop the fundamental skill
- 2:16Speaker 2: of rugby league, head into schools and... teach kids how
- 2:20Speaker 2: to be good people as well. So it's not all
- 2:22Speaker 2: just about rugby league. We double a little bit everywhere.
- 2:25Speaker 2: And I work with some really good people. Jack Reed,
- 2:27Speaker 2: Mick Hancock, Michael Devere, Scott Prince, Paul Dyer.
- 2:32Speaker 1: You said good people.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:33Speaker 3: I'm a good person.
- 2:34Speaker 1: He said a good person.
- 2:36Speaker 2: We can take Paul Dyer out of that list.
- 2:40Speaker 4: So you've got all the bad examples.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Well, yeah.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it's hard to come into that and be back.
- 2:45Speaker 3: How's boys' eyes there looking? Has it come back?
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's all right.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Is there no Devin patch anymore?
- 2:50Speaker 1: I think... He hasn't been a turkey yet.
- 2:52Speaker 3: No.
- 2:52Speaker 1: No, he is a turkey, but he hasn't been a turkey. No,
- 2:54Speaker 1: it's good. I love my job.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Just signed another three years at the club as well,
- 2:58Speaker 2: so they can't get rid of me again. I'm not
- 3:01Speaker 2: going to make the same mistake last time.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Which one was that? There was many of them.
- 3:06Speaker 2: So I've been a really good boy and got a
- 3:10Speaker 2: little family and a wife now, so.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I can't really be bad. That's probably it.
- 3:16Speaker 4: And you're doing stuff with the Nines as well?
- 3:18Speaker 2: Yeah, so I've got a team. We're coming up against
- 3:20Speaker 2: Samuel Arthur, actually. You're with Titans of.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Cole? Industry.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Industry.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Is that what it is? Yeah, yeah. So our team
- 3:28Speaker 1: is called the Hills District.
- 3:30Speaker 2: So I just basically grew it around the Hills District
- 3:35Speaker 2: from the area I grew up in.
- 3:37Speaker 3: How did you go? Did you get a team?
- 3:39Speaker 1: Is it full? We have a team. We've still got
- 3:41Speaker 1: probably three places. I think I have.
- 3:46Speaker 3: A team behind here.
- 3:46Speaker 4: And you're putting on boots or are you coaching?
- 3:48Speaker 1: What are you doing? No, those have been well hung up.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Well, Sammy says that every time, but he still ends
- 3:53Speaker 4: up playing.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Yeah, his body's probably in better nick than mine. I'm
- 3:56Speaker 2: not sure how because I've... As in, hold on.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I've finished the sentence.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Because of my ankle.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Oh, yes. That's what I'm saying.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Yes, okay. Actually, let's talk about the ankle because... For
- 4:09Speaker 4: those that don't remember Gerard, like, check out, do yourself
- 4:13Speaker 4: a favour. Like, kids, kids, do yourself a favour. Check
- 4:16Speaker 4: out the highlight reel.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Bumped off Benji Marshall, eh? Threw him 20 metres.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Some of your stuff on the ring. You're only a.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Little kid, mate. I remember it all, mate. He's a
- 4:27Speaker 1: young buck, mate.
- 4:27Speaker 4: For Broncos and Queensland, like, just.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Australia.
- 4:31Speaker 4: And Australia, yeah.
- 4:32Speaker 3: The highlights.
- 4:33Speaker 1: All-stars. Unbelievable. All-stars.
- 4:36Speaker 4: You had one of the most sickening injuries that I've
- 4:39Speaker 4: ever seen. I still can't watch it because it was
- 4:44Speaker 4: similar in effect to what happened with Cleary more recently.
- 4:49Speaker 5: But cameras weren't so smart back then. They just left
- 4:51Speaker 5: the camera on the leg.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And zoomed in.
- 4:53Speaker 3: And zoomed in to double check to make sure it was.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Yeah, not sure what they were thinking back then.
- 4:59Speaker 2: No.
- 4:59Speaker 3: No. Just hanging there. Let's just leave the camera on. Yeah,
- 5:02Speaker 3: that is broken.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Do you.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I had yellow socks on too. It was just blood everywhere.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Have you watched it?
- 5:09Speaker 1: Have you ever watched it? Yeah, I've watched it. It
- 5:10Speaker 1: doesn't bother me anymore. That's way in my past. But
- 5:15Speaker 1: talk about Nathan's. We were just having a little.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Conversation outside, but we thought we'd bring it in here
- 5:20Speaker 2: with the mics and the cameras. I think he's going
- 5:24Speaker 2: to be fine. I feel like what I heard is
- 5:27Speaker 2: he's done his fibula. Now, I don't want to be...
- 5:32Speaker 2: I think that's your bigger bone in your leg, your fibula.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah. And the fib and tib. So I think he's
- 5:38Speaker 1: broken that and the other one stayed intact. But it
- 5:41Speaker 1: has come out of the skin somehow. I don't know
- 5:43Speaker 1: how it did.
- 5:44Speaker 4: So is that different to yours?
- 5:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Mine was an ankle dislocation. So... This is my
- 5:50Speaker 1: leg here, ankle. Yeah, the ball of your foot. Yeah,
- 5:52Speaker 1: ball of my foot. My whole joints come out, and
- 5:54Speaker 1: then I broke my tib and fib as well.
- 5:57Speaker 3: So the balls come out, and then you broke it.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I just, when mum told me to do it properly,
- 6:01Speaker 1: she was like, shit. Yeah, you made me do the
- 6:03Speaker 1: right thing. I did it properly. Don't do it half,
- 6:05Speaker 1: never do anything half-assed in your life. Yeah, so, thank you, man.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Appreciate that.
- 6:10Speaker 4: And what was the, and for you, what was the recovery?
- 6:13Speaker 2: Oh, the ramifications on mine were more about, like, I
- 6:16Speaker 2: just had an open wound and a very, on your
- 6:18Speaker 2: ankle joint, A lot less skin, so it's a little
- 6:21Speaker 2: bit like your wrist here. The best way I can
- 6:24Speaker 2: put it is if you have a cut there, the
- 6:26Speaker 2: skin's harder, it's harder to take back because it's closer
- 6:30Speaker 2: to the bone.
- 6:31Speaker 1: So with mine, it was right on the ankle bones
- 6:34Speaker 1: down here.
- 6:36Speaker 2: The wound was a lot larger and the skin just
- 6:39Speaker 2: did not go back together. So when they stitched it,
- 6:42Speaker 2: it just turned into like, I think they call it gangrene,
- 6:45Speaker 2: like Yeah.
- 6:46Speaker 1: They just died. Their skin died. Their skin died to effect.
- 6:49Speaker 1: So it was, yeah, it was a lot more.
- 6:52Speaker 2: So, look, the only thing I've ever done better than
- 6:55Speaker 2: Nathan Cleary is his ankle. And I'm glad I've done
- 6:59Speaker 2: it because I'm sick of him being better than everyone.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Yeah, you did it right. But he's going to be fine.
- 7:05Speaker 1: What is he? 28 years of age.
- 7:07Speaker 3: He's in the late part of his 20s.
- 7:09Speaker 2: So he's still got a lot of time left. I
- 7:11Speaker 2: reckon he'll have complication when he gets a bit older. Like,
- 7:13Speaker 2: you know, when he's probably in his 30s, like late
- 7:16Speaker 2: 30s or 40s, he might have discomfort.
- 7:18Speaker 1: But for his career.
- 7:19Speaker 5: I reckon these days they're a lot better with it.
- 7:21Speaker 5: Like when these stuff, because I feel like yours was like,
- 7:25Speaker 5: they're like, what?
- 7:26Speaker 3: We've never seen this before. What do we do?
- 7:30Speaker 5: And I feel, you know, the physio, the doctors, they did,
- 7:33Speaker 5: the best thing they could on the day. But I
- 7:36Speaker 5: feel like they learn every time a new injury happens,
- 7:39Speaker 5: I think.
- 7:39Speaker 3: They're going to get a lot better at that stuff.
- 7:41Speaker 1: There's got to be a guinea pig somewhere, and here
- 7:43Speaker 1: I am.
- 7:44Speaker 5: I feel like what you went through, knowing you for
- 7:47Speaker 5: this long, it was hard. Obviously, I wasn't there for
- 7:51Speaker 5: the whole thing, but when I did come here and
- 7:53Speaker 5: meet you, it just seemed like you never wished it
- 7:56Speaker 5: upon anyone else.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm pretty fucked in the head, to be honest.
- 8:00Speaker 3: But I come out the other side.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I was....
- 8:03Speaker 1: I was probably here, now I'm... It.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Was a long road back. It really was a long
- 8:07Speaker 3: road back.
- 8:07Speaker 4: I mean, no BS, because this has helped someone that's
- 8:10Speaker 4: suffered a full-on injury.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Like, that would have... Mental toll. Yeah.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Was that as bad as the bone?
- 8:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it is.
- 8:16Speaker 2: But without making this podcast, like, you know, depressing and whatnot,
- 8:21Speaker 2: sometimes things just happen in.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Life, and you've just got to... Like, that's how I
- 8:24Speaker 1: look at it now. If you'd... The other thing about
- 8:27Speaker 1: Nathan Cleary, he's 28, right?
- 8:28Speaker 2: Or 27. How old were you? I was 22. 2
- 8:31Speaker 2: or 21. I just didn't have the mental capacity to
- 8:36Speaker 2: understand how to overcome something like that.
- 8:39Speaker 1: He's already had numerous injuries. He's been through a lot already.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I would say he's one of the most strong-headed, level-headed
- 8:48Speaker 2: footy players I've ever watched play footy.
- 8:51Speaker 1: When you've been as successful as.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Him and can have what's happened to him over those
- 8:56Speaker 2: times with his injuries and comebacks and whatnot, you have
- 9:00Speaker 2: to be Very headstrong to be able to be Nathan Cleary.
- 9:04Speaker 1: So I.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Literally don't think he'll have any issues with bouncing back.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Who he is as a footy player, he's got all
- 9:11Speaker 1: the confidence in the world. He's smart.
- 9:15Speaker 2: He's a full package of what you want in a
- 9:18Speaker 2: rugby league player and a human being.
- 9:20Speaker 1: So I think he's going to be fine.
- 9:23Speaker 4: And if anyone's going to take it on the chin....
- 9:26Speaker 3: Oh, come on. Are you jealous of the chin?
- 9:30Speaker 1: Oh, Kip Blackman, that's not good.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Are you jealous.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Of his chin?
- 9:34Speaker 3: Is that what you're saying?
- 9:35Speaker 4: It's a solid jawline. It is a good jawline.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Just a bit.
- 9:38Speaker 4: He could have given me a half.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Just a half.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Oh, gosh. That's how you grow the beard. Yeah, it is.
- 9:44Speaker 4: It's to hide the weak chin.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I've been growing mine to hold my extra.
- 9:50Speaker 3: On Nathan, I've heard he's going to be back.
- 9:52Speaker 1: For January training. Like, He'll be January. And he would, yeah. Wow.
- 9:58Speaker 3: That's their goal is to get him back.
- 9:59Speaker 1: I reckon you heard he'll play round... Round one. I
- 10:03Speaker 1: reckon round three because, man, Penrith have just got... They
- 10:07Speaker 1: don't need it.
- 10:07Speaker 3: They don't need it. I feel like he'll be well.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Let's just say round three. There you go. Nice.
- 10:13Speaker 4: You mentioned that maybe down the track, like when he's
- 10:16Speaker 4: in his 40s, he might have some issues.
- 10:17Speaker 2: What.
- 10:18Speaker 1: What would that be? Wow. Ouch.
- 10:22Speaker 2: My problems are I drink a lot of alcohol. I
- 10:27Speaker 2: eat a lot of food. So I'm not sure if
- 10:30Speaker 2: you'll have the same effect. That's what's happened to me.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Mine is just like flexion and pain. So I actually
- 10:37Speaker 2: have asked, and going back to Luke Anning, who we
- 10:39Speaker 2: know very well, if I could just get it cut off.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I know you guys think that's crazy, but it gets
- 10:45Speaker 2: to a point how painful it is. Really?
- 10:47Speaker 1: Because it throws your hip out. Yeah, like everything.
- 10:51Speaker 2: If I've been on my feet, and in the job
- 10:52Speaker 2: I do, I'm on the grass with the kids a lot,
- 10:56Speaker 2: so I'm on my feet heaps. So at the end
- 11:00Speaker 2: of a big week, I'll be just.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Walking like a penguin, like I'll be waddling.
- 11:05Speaker 2: So there are things, there's ways to manage it as well,
- 11:10Speaker 2: not drinking and not eating, but they're my two favourite
- 11:12Speaker 2: things to do.
- 11:13Speaker 3: They are good things to do. Having less pressure on
- 11:16Speaker 3: it from the above.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Yes but what about like just just painkillers is that or.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Is that just something that you that's another story that's
- 11:23Speaker 2: another yeah i've got an addictive.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Personality yeah okay so it's an idea to stay away
- 11:29Speaker 4: when you say like i'm.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Being serious if you said Cut it off.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Do you mean the ankle ball and get that replaced?
- 11:46Speaker 3: Or do you mean from above and foot?
- 11:48Speaker 1: Yeah, just cut it off. Right here. Right there. Are
- 11:51Speaker 1: you joking? I'm not joking.
- 11:54Speaker 2: I've thought about this a lot. The only thing that
- 11:56Speaker 2: really would mess with me is I've read a book on,
- 12:00Speaker 2: I can read too.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I've read a book on phantom pain that really makes
- 12:04Speaker 1: me nervous.
- 12:05Speaker 2: And I've actually been to hospitals with people who have
- 12:09Speaker 2: had amputations who have spoke about like I met a
- 12:13Speaker 2: police officer who got hit by a bike and he
- 12:15Speaker 2: got his leg cut off here, I got hit there.
- 12:18Speaker 2: And he just says that still now, five, six years
- 12:21Speaker 2: down the track, he still feels like his foot's itching.
- 12:24Speaker 1: And it's gone. And it's not there. So there's, and
- 12:26Speaker 1: then still gets up and gets pain.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:28Speaker 1: There's no pain. So I think the.
- 12:30Speaker 3: You might need some combantrum.
- 12:31Speaker 1: That's worms, I think. Combantrum. What is that? You've got
- 12:35Speaker 1: to eat your own. Yeah, I just.
- 12:37Speaker 2: I do have to eat your own. I just think
- 12:39Speaker 2: that that's probably the biggest, that'd be the biggest drama.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Yeah. Because I'm already ahead, you know what, like in
- 12:44Speaker 1: my head's already. There's a lot going on.
- 12:46Speaker 2: So. But, yeah, look, the only other way that they
- 12:50Speaker 2: can fix it is put a rod up my heel
- 12:53Speaker 2: and fuse it. But then that makes my work worse
- 12:57Speaker 2: for my hips and my back.
- 12:58Speaker 3: That means your foot can't move then, eh?
- 12:59Speaker 1: Yes.
- 12:59Speaker 3: That's it?
- 12:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure someone, who was a trainer, what's his name,
- 13:05Speaker 2: with the bushy hair, Sammy, who used to do the
- 13:07Speaker 2: New South Wales training? King?
- 13:09Speaker 1: No, not Bushy. No, no, no. He was at Penrith.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Oh, um.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Yes.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Ronnie.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Yeah, Ronnie. I'm pretty sure he's got a fused ankle. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:18Speaker 1: And he still does. Ronnie Palmer. Yeah, Ronnie Palmer. He
- 13:20Speaker 1: still does a lot of stuff. Remember the Cougar Bourbon ad?
- 13:23Speaker 3: They reckon that that character was based on him.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Oh. Yeah.
- 13:26Speaker 1: How old is the Cougar Bourbon? Yeah. Is that the
- 13:29Speaker 1: five Cougars things? That one? Yeah, and he had like
- 13:31Speaker 1: the flowing part. It was just like.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Yeah, but Roddy Palmer, he's been in and around the
- 13:36Speaker 3: game for many.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Many years. Many years. And I feel like someone did
- 13:39Speaker 1: tell me that he did get.
- 13:40Speaker 2: His ankle fused and he still runs water, but he
- 13:43Speaker 2: has problems with his back and his hips.
- 13:46Speaker 1: I mean, look, I'm 36 years young, so I've got
- 13:50Speaker 1: a long way to go. Only the good die young,
- 13:52Speaker 1: so I'm not going anywhere. Yes, exactly, Sam. What did
- 13:55Speaker 1: Limus get up to? He's 83 and his cars are
- 13:59Speaker 1: as big as my quad. We've got a long way
- 14:01Speaker 1: to go, boys.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Well, we're coming back with the podcast proper tomorrow.
- 14:12Speaker 1: We'll go through all the games.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Tomorrow.
- 14:14Speaker 1: You're all right, mate.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:16Speaker 1: You had a few little strokes. You might have had
- 14:18Speaker 1: a few mini strokes this last two weeks.
- 14:20Speaker 3: I'm serious. You've had about 12 mini strokes in the
- 14:22Speaker 3: last two weeks. You need to get checked.
- 14:24Speaker 1: I'm not well rested, it's true. Maybe some sleep, yeah.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Yeah, but we'll talk through all the games for the
- 14:29Speaker 4: World Cup.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Tomorrow. Tomorrow. Tomorrow.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Tomorrow.
- 14:33Speaker 1: We love you. Tomorrow. Tomorrow.
