- 0:00Speaker 1: Section sixteen of the Book of Enoch, translated by Robert
- 0:04Speaker 1: Henry Charles. This LibriVox recording is in the public domain.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Chapter ninety eight self Indulgence of Sinners sin originated by
- 0:14Speaker 1: Man all sin recorded in Heaven Woes for the Sinners,
- 0:20Speaker 1: chapter ninety eight. And now I swear unto you, to
- 0:23Speaker 1: the wise and to the foolish, For ye shall have
- 0:26Speaker 1: manifold experiences on the earth. For ye men shall put
- 0:30Speaker 1: on more adornments than a woman, and colored garments more
- 0:33Speaker 1: than a virgin. In royalty, and in grandeur, and in power,
- 0:38Speaker 1: and in silver, and in gold, and in purple, and
- 0:42Speaker 1: in splendor, and in food, they shall be poured out
- 0:45Speaker 1: as water. Therefore they shall be wanting in doctrine and wisdom,
- 0:50Speaker 1: and they shall perish thereby, together with their possessions, and
- 0:53Speaker 1: with all their glory and their splendor, and in shame,
- 0:57Speaker 1: and in slaughter, and in great destitution. Their spirits shall
- 1:01Speaker 1: be cast into the furnace of fire. I have sworn
- 1:04Speaker 1: unto you, ye sinners. As a mountain has not become
- 1:07Speaker 1: a slave, and a hill does not become the handmaid
- 1:11Speaker 1: of a woman. Even so sin has not been sent
- 1:14Speaker 1: upon the earth, but man of himself has created it,
- 1:18Speaker 1: and under a great curse shall they fall who commit it.
- 1:22Speaker 1: And barrenness has not been given to the woman, But
- 1:25Speaker 1: on account of the deeds of her own hands, she
- 1:27Speaker 1: dies without children. I have sworn unto you, ye sinners,
- 1:31Speaker 1: by the Holy Great One, that all your evil deeds
- 1:34Speaker 1: are revealed in the heavens, and that none of your
- 1:37Speaker 1: deeds of oppression are covered and hidden. And do not
- 1:41Speaker 1: think in your spirit, nor say in your heart that
- 1:43Speaker 1: ye do not know, and that ye do not see.
- 1:46Speaker 1: That every sin is every day recorded in heaven in
- 1:49Speaker 1: the presence of the Most High. From henceforth ye know
- 1:53Speaker 1: that all your oppression, wherewith ye oppress, is written down
- 1:57Speaker 1: every day till the day of your judgment. Woe to you,
- 2:01Speaker 1: ye fools, for through your folly shall ye perish, and
- 2:04Speaker 1: ye transgress against the wise and so good hap shall
- 2:08Speaker 1: not be your portion. And now know ye that ye
- 2:12Speaker 1: are prepared for the day of destruction. Wherefore do not
- 2:15Speaker 1: hope to live, ye sinners, but ye shall depart and die,
- 2:19Speaker 1: for ye know no ransom, for ye are prepared for
- 2:22Speaker 1: the day of the Great Judgment, for the day of tribulation,
- 2:25Speaker 1: and great shame, for your spirits. Woe to you, ye
- 2:29Speaker 1: obstinate of heart, who work wickedness and eat blood. Whence
- 2:33Speaker 1: have ye good things to eat and to drink, and
- 2:36Speaker 1: to be filled from all the good things which the
- 2:39Speaker 1: Lord the Most High has placed in abundance on the earth.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Therefore ye shall have no peace. Woe to you who
- 2:46Speaker 1: love the deeds of unrighteousness. Wherefore do ye hope for
- 2:50Speaker 1: good hap unto yourselves. Know that ye shall be delivered
- 2:53Speaker 1: into the hands of the righteous, and they shall cut
- 2:56Speaker 1: off your necks and slay you, and have no mercy
- 2:59Speaker 1: upon you. Woe to you who rejoice in the tribulation
- 3:02Speaker 1: of the righteous, for no grave shall be dug for you.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Woe to you who said at naught the words of
- 3:09Speaker 1: the righteous, for ye shall have no hope of life.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Woe to you who write down, lying in godless words,
- 3:16Speaker 1: For they write down their lives that men may hear
- 3:18Speaker 1: them enact godlessly towards their neighbor. Therefore they shall have
- 3:23Speaker 1: no peace, but die a sudden death. Chapter ninety nine
- 3:28Speaker 1: Woes pronounced on the godless, the law breakers, evil plight
- 3:32Speaker 1: of sinners in the last days. Further woes. Chapter ninety
- 3:37Speaker 1: nine Woe to you, who were godlessness and glory in
- 3:40Speaker 1: lying and extol them, ye shall perish, and no happy
- 3:44Speaker 1: life shall be yours. Woe to them who pervert the
- 3:48Speaker 1: words of a brightness and transgress the eternal law, and
- 3:52Speaker 1: transform themselves into what they were not, into sinners, They
- 3:56Speaker 1: shall be trodden under foot upon the earth. In those days,
- 4:00Speaker 1: Make ready, ye righteous, to raise your prayers as a memorial,
- 4:03Speaker 1: and place them as a testimony before the angels, that
- 4:06Speaker 1: they may place the sin of the sinners for a
- 4:09Speaker 1: memorial before the most High. In those days the nations
- 4:13Speaker 1: shall be stirred up, and the families of the nations
- 4:16Speaker 1: shall arise on the day of destruction. And in those
- 4:19Speaker 1: days the destitute shall go forth and carry off their children,
- 4:23Speaker 1: and they shall abandon them, so that their children shall
- 4:25Speaker 1: perish through them. Yea, they shall abandon their children that
- 4:29Speaker 1: are still sucklings, and not return to them, and shall
- 4:32Speaker 1: have no pity on their beloved ones. And again I
- 4:36Speaker 1: swear to you, ye sinners, that sin is prepared for
- 4:39Speaker 1: a day of unceasing bloodshed. And they who worship stones
- 4:43Speaker 1: and grave images of gold and silver, and wood and
- 4:47Speaker 1: stone and clay, and those who worship in pure spirits
- 4:51Speaker 1: and demons, and all kinds of idols not according to knowledge,
- 4:56Speaker 1: shall get no manner of help from them, And they
- 4:59Speaker 1: shall become god by reason of the folly of their hearts,
- 5:02Speaker 1: and their eyes shall be blinded through the fear of
- 5:04Speaker 1: their hearts, and through visions in their dreams. Through these
- 5:08Speaker 1: they shall become godless and fearful. For they shall have
- 5:12Speaker 1: wrought all their work in a lie, and shall have
- 5:15Speaker 1: worshiped a stone. Therefore, in an instant shall they perish.
- 5:20Speaker 1: But in those days, blessed are all they who accept
- 5:22Speaker 1: the words of wisdom and understand them, and observe the
- 5:26Speaker 1: paths of the Most High, and walk in the path
- 5:29Speaker 1: of His righteousness, and become not godless with the godless,
- 5:32Speaker 1: for they shall be saved. Woe to you who spread
- 5:36Speaker 1: evil to your neighbors, for ye shall be slain in Shiel.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Woe to you who make deceitful and false measures, and
- 5:44Speaker 1: to them who cause bitterness on the earth, for they
- 5:47Speaker 1: shall thereby be utterly consumed. Woe to you who build
- 5:51Speaker 1: your houses through the grievous toil of others, and all
- 5:55Speaker 1: their building materials are the bricks and stones of sin.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I tell you ye shall have no peace. Woe to
- 6:02Speaker 1: them who reject the measure and eternal heritage of their fathers,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and whose souls follow after idols, for they shall have
- 6:09Speaker 1: no rest. Woe to them who work on righteousness and
- 6:13Speaker 1: help oppression, and slay their neighbors, until the day of
- 6:16Speaker 1: the Great Judgment. For he shall cast down your glory
- 6:19Speaker 1: and bring affliction on your hearts, and shall arouse his
- 6:23Speaker 1: fierce indignation and destroy you all with the sword, and
- 6:27Speaker 1: all the holy and righteous shall remember your sins. Chapter
- 6:31Speaker 1: one hundred. The sinners destroy each other judgment of the
- 6:35Speaker 1: fallen angels. The safety of the righteous further woes for
- 6:39Speaker 1: the sinners. Chapter one hundred. And in those days, in
- 6:43Speaker 1: one place, the fathers, together with their sons, shall be smitten,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and brothers one with another, shall fall in death till
- 6:50Speaker 1: the streams flow with their blood. For a man shall
- 6:54Speaker 1: not withhold his hand from slaying his sons and his
- 6:57Speaker 1: son's sons, and the sinner shall not withhine hold his
- 7:00Speaker 1: hand from his honored brother. From dawn till sunset, they
- 7:04Speaker 1: shall slay one another. And the horse shall walk up
- 7:07Speaker 1: to the breast in the blood of sinners, and the
- 7:10Speaker 1: chariot shall be submerged to its height. In those days,
- 7:14Speaker 1: the Angel shall descend into the secret places and gather
- 7:17Speaker 1: together into one place all those who brought down sin,
- 7:21Speaker 1: and the Most High will arise on that day of
- 7:24Speaker 1: judgment to execute great judgment amongst sinners and over all
- 7:29Speaker 1: the righteous and holy. He will appoint guardians from amongst
- 7:32Speaker 1: the holy angels to guard them as the apple of
- 7:35Speaker 1: an eye, until he makes an end of all wickedness
- 7:38Speaker 1: and all sin. And though the righteous sleep a long sleep,
- 7:42Speaker 1: they have naught to fear. And then the children of
- 7:45Speaker 1: the youth shall see the wise in security, and shall
- 7:49Speaker 1: understand all the words of this book, and recognize that
- 7:52Speaker 1: their riches shall not be able to save them in
- 7:55Speaker 1: the overthrow of their sins. Woe to you, sinners, on
- 7:59Speaker 1: the day of strong as anguish Ye who afflict the
- 8:02Speaker 1: righteous and burn them with fire, Ye shall be requited
- 8:05Speaker 1: according to your works. Woe to you, ye obstinate of heart,
- 8:10Speaker 1: who watch in order to devise wickedness. Therefore shall fear
- 8:14Speaker 1: come upon you, and there shall be none to help you.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Woe to you, ye sinners, on account of the words
- 8:20Speaker 1: of your mouth and on account of the deeds of
- 8:22Speaker 1: your hands, which your godlessness has wrought em blazing flames,
- 8:27Speaker 1: burning worse than fire, shall ye burn. And now know
- 8:31Speaker 1: ye that from the angels he will inquire as to
- 8:35Speaker 1: your deeds in heaven, from the sun, and from the moon,
- 8:39Speaker 1: and from the stars, in reference to your sins. Because
- 8:42Speaker 1: upon the earth ye execute judgment on the righteous. And
- 8:46Speaker 1: he will summon to testify against you every cloud and mist,
- 8:50Speaker 1: and do and rain, for they shall all be withheld
- 8:53Speaker 1: because of you, from descending upon you, and they shall
- 8:56Speaker 1: be mindful of your sins. And now give presents to
- 9:01Speaker 1: the rain, that it be not withheld from descending upon you,
- 9:05Speaker 1: Nor yet the dew, when it has received gold and
- 9:08Speaker 1: silver from you, that it may descend. When the hoar,
- 9:11Speaker 1: frost and snow with their chilliness, and all the snow
- 9:15Speaker 1: storms with all their plagues, fall upon you, in those days,
- 9:18Speaker 1: ye shall not be able to stand before them. Chapter
- 9:22Speaker 1: one hundred and one exhortation to the fear of God.
- 9:26Speaker 1: All nature fears Him, but not the sinners. Chapter one
- 9:30Speaker 1: hundred and one. Observe the heaven, ye children of Heaven,
- 9:34Speaker 1: and every work of the Most High, and fear ye Him,
- 9:37Speaker 1: and work no evil in his presence. If he closes
- 9:40Speaker 1: the windows of heaven and withholds the rain and the
- 9:43Speaker 1: dew from descending on the earth on your account? What
- 9:46Speaker 1: will ye do then? And if he sends his anger
- 9:49Speaker 1: upon you because of your deeds, ye cannot petition him,
- 9:52Speaker 1: for ye spake proud and insolent words against his righteousness.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Therefore ye shall have no peace. Ye not the sailors
- 10:01Speaker 1: of the ships, how their ships are tossed to and
- 10:03Speaker 1: fro by the waves, and are shaken by the winds,
- 10:06Speaker 1: and are in sore trouble. And therefore do they fear,
- 10:10Speaker 1: because all their goodly possessions go upon the sea with them,
- 10:13Speaker 1: and they have evil forebodings of heart, that the sea
- 10:16Speaker 1: will swallow them and they will perish Therein are not
- 10:19Speaker 1: the entire sea and all its waters, and all its
- 10:22Speaker 1: movements the work of the most High? And has he
- 10:26Speaker 1: not set limits to its doings and confined it throughout
- 10:30Speaker 1: by the sand, And at his reproof, it is afraid
- 10:34Speaker 1: and dries up, and all its fish dye, and all
- 10:37Speaker 1: that is in it. But ye sinners that are on
- 10:39Speaker 1: the earth fear him not? Has He not made the
- 10:42Speaker 1: heaven and the earth and all that is therein? Who
- 10:45Speaker 1: has given understanding and wisdom to everything that moves on
- 10:48Speaker 1: the earth and in the sea. Do not the sailors
- 10:51Speaker 1: of the ships fear the sea? Yet sinners fear not
- 10:55Speaker 1: the most High Chapter one hundred and two. Terrors of
- 10:59Speaker 1: the Day of JD. The adverse fortunes of the righteous
- 11:03Speaker 1: on the earth Chapter one hundred and two. In those days,
- 11:07Speaker 1: when he hath brought a grievous fire upon you, whither
- 11:10Speaker 1: will you flee? And where will ye find deliverance? And
- 11:13Speaker 1: when he launches forth his word against you, will you
- 11:16Speaker 1: not be affrighted in fear? And all the luminaries shall
- 11:19Speaker 1: be affrighted with great fear, And all the earth shall
- 11:22Speaker 1: be affrighted and tremble and be alarmed, and all the
- 11:25Speaker 1: angels shall execute their commands and shall seek to hide
- 11:29Speaker 1: themselves from the presence of the Great Glory, And all
- 11:32Speaker 1: the children of earth shall tremble and quake, And ye
- 11:35Speaker 1: sinners shall be cursed forever, and ye shall have no peace.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Fear ye not, ye souls of the righteous, And be
- 11:42Speaker 1: hopeful ye that have died in righteousness, And grieve not
- 11:46Speaker 1: if your soul into Sheiul has descended in grief, and
- 11:50Speaker 1: that in your life, your body fared not according to
- 11:52Speaker 1: your goodness. But wait for the day of the judgment
- 11:56Speaker 1: of sinners, and for the day of cursing and chastisement.
- 12:00Speaker 1: And yet when ye die, the sinners speak over you.
- 12:03Speaker 1: As we die, so die the righteous. And what benefit
- 12:06Speaker 1: do they reap for their deeds? Behold, even as we
- 12:10Speaker 1: so do they die in grief and darkness. And what
- 12:13Speaker 1: have they more than we? From henceforth we are equal?
- 12:17Speaker 1: And what will they receive? And what will they see? Forever? Behold,
- 12:21Speaker 1: they too have died, and henceforth forever they shall see
- 12:24Speaker 1: no light. I tell you, ye, sinners, ye are content
- 12:29Speaker 1: to eat and drink, and rob and sin, and strip
- 12:32Speaker 1: men naked, and acquire wealth, and see good days? Have
- 12:36Speaker 1: ye seen the righteous, how their end falls out, that
- 12:39Speaker 1: no manner of violence is found in them till their death. Nevertheless,
- 12:43Speaker 1: they perished and became as though they had not been,
- 12:46Speaker 1: and their spirits descended into shiol. In Tribulation Chapter one
- 12:51Speaker 1: hundred and three, Different destinies of the righteous and the sinners,
- 12:55Speaker 1: Fresh objections of the sinners Chapter one hundred and three. Now,
- 13:00Speaker 1: therefore I swear to you the righteous, by the glory
- 13:03Speaker 1: of the Great and honored and mighty one in dominion,
- 13:06Speaker 1: and by his greatness. I swear to you, I know
- 13:09Speaker 1: a mystery, and have read the heavenly tablets, and have
- 13:13Speaker 1: seen the Holy books, and have found written therein and
- 13:16Speaker 1: inscribed regarding them, that all goodness and joy and glory
- 13:20Speaker 1: are prepared for them, and written down for the spirits
- 13:23Speaker 1: of those who have died in righteousness, And that manifold
- 13:27Speaker 1: good shall be given to you in recompense for your labors,
- 13:30Speaker 1: and that your lot is abundantly beyond the lot of
- 13:33Speaker 1: the living, and the spirits of you who have died
- 13:36Speaker 1: in righteousness shall live and rejoice, and their spirits shall
- 13:40Speaker 1: not perish, nor their memorial from before the face of
- 13:44Speaker 1: the Great One, unto all the generations of the world.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Wherefore no longer fear their contumely. Woe to you, ye sinners,
- 13:52Speaker 1: when ye have died, If ye die in the wealth
- 13:54Speaker 1: of your sins, and those who are like you, say
- 13:57Speaker 1: regarding you, blessed are the sinners. They have seen all
- 14:00Speaker 1: their days, and how they have died in prosperity and
- 14:04Speaker 1: in wealth, and have not seen tribulation or murder in
- 14:07Speaker 1: their life, And they have died in honor and judgment
- 14:10Speaker 1: has not been executed on them during their life. Know
- 14:14Speaker 1: ye that their souls will be made to descend into shil,
- 14:18Speaker 1: and they shall be wretched in their great tribulation, and
- 14:22Speaker 1: into darkness and chains and a burning flame, where there
- 14:24Speaker 1: is grievous judgment, shall your spirits enter, And the great
- 14:28Speaker 1: judgment shall be for all the generations of the world.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Woe to you, for ye shall have no peace. Say
- 14:35Speaker 1: not in regard to the righteous and good who are
- 14:38Speaker 1: in life. In our troubled days, we have toiled laboriously
- 14:42Speaker 1: and experienced every trouble, and met with much evil, and
- 14:45Speaker 1: been consumed, and have become few and our spirit small.
- 14:50Speaker 1: And we have been destroyed, and have not found any
- 14:52Speaker 1: to help us even with a word. We have been
- 14:55Speaker 1: tortured and destroyed, and not hoped to see life from
- 14:59Speaker 1: day to day. We hoped to be the head, and
- 15:02Speaker 1: have become the tail. We have toiled laboriously and had
- 15:06Speaker 1: no satisfaction in our toil, and we have become the
- 15:09Speaker 1: food of the sinners and the unrighteous. And they have
- 15:12Speaker 1: laid their yoke heavily upon us. They have had dominion
- 15:16Speaker 1: over us that hated us and smote us, and to
- 15:19Speaker 1: those that hated us. We have bowed our necks, but
- 15:21Speaker 1: they pitied us not. We desired to get away from them,
- 15:25Speaker 1: that we might escape and be at rest, but found
- 15:27Speaker 1: no place whereunto we should flee and be safe from them.
- 15:31Speaker 1: And are complained to the rulers in our tribulation, and
- 15:35Speaker 1: cried out against those who devoured us. But they did
- 15:38Speaker 1: not attend to our cries, and would not harken to
- 15:40Speaker 1: our voice. And they helped those who robbed us and
- 15:44Speaker 1: devoured us, and those who made us few. And they
- 15:48Speaker 1: concealed their oppression, and they did not remove from us
- 15:51Speaker 1: the yoke of those that devoured us and dispersed us
- 15:54Speaker 1: and murdered us. And they concealed their murder, and remembered
- 15:58Speaker 1: not that they had lifted up their hand against us.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Chapter one hundred and four Assurances given to the righteous,
- 16:05Speaker 1: admonitions to sinners and the falsifiers of the word of uprightness.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Chapter one hundred and four. I swear unto you that
- 16:14Speaker 1: in heaven the angels remember you for good before the
- 16:17Speaker 1: glory of the Great One, and your names are written
- 16:19Speaker 1: before the glory of the Great One. Be hopeful, for
- 16:23Speaker 1: afore time ye were put to shame through ill and affliction.
- 16:27Speaker 1: But now ye shall shine as the lights of heaven.
- 16:30Speaker 1: You shall shine, and ye shall be seen, and the
- 16:33Speaker 1: portals of heaven shall be open to you. And in
- 16:36Speaker 1: your cry cry for judgment, and it shall appear to you,
- 16:40Speaker 1: for all your tribulation shall be visited, on the rulers
- 16:43Speaker 1: and on all who helped those who plundered you. Be hopeful,
- 16:47Speaker 1: and cast not away your hopes, for ye shall have
- 16:50Speaker 1: great joy as the angels of heaven. What shall ye
- 16:53Speaker 1: be obliged to do. You shall not have to hide
- 16:56Speaker 1: on the day of the great judgment, and you shall
- 16:58Speaker 1: not be found as sinner, and the eternal judgment shall
- 17:02Speaker 1: be far from you for all the generations of the world.
- 17:06Speaker 1: And now fear not ye righteous, when ye see the
- 17:09Speaker 1: sinners growing strong and prospering in their ways, be not
- 17:13Speaker 1: companions with them, but keep afar from their violence, For
- 17:17Speaker 1: ye shall become companions of the hosts of heaven. And
- 17:20Speaker 1: although ye sinners say all our sins shall not be
- 17:23Speaker 1: searched out and be written down, nevertheless they shall write
- 17:27Speaker 1: down all your sins every day. And now I show
- 17:31Speaker 1: unto you that light and darkness day and night, see
- 17:35Speaker 1: all your sins, Be not godless in your hearts, and
- 17:39Speaker 1: lie not, and alter not the words of uprightness, nor
- 17:43Speaker 1: charge with lying the words of the Holy Great One,
- 17:46Speaker 1: nor take account of your idols. For all your lying
- 17:49Speaker 1: and all your godlessness issue not in righteousness, but in
- 17:53Speaker 1: great sin. And now I know this mystery, that sinners
- 17:57Speaker 1: will alter and pervert the words of righteousness in any ways,
- 18:00Speaker 1: and will speak wicked words, and lie and practice great deceits,
- 18:05Speaker 1: and write books concerning their words. But when they write
- 18:09Speaker 1: down truthfully all my words in their languages, and do
- 18:12Speaker 1: not change or minish aught from my words, but write
- 18:15Speaker 1: them all down truthfully all that I first testified concerning them,
- 18:20Speaker 1: then I know another mystery, that books will be given
- 18:23Speaker 1: to the righteous and the wise to become a cause
- 18:26Speaker 1: of joy and uprightness and much wisdom. And to them
- 18:29Speaker 1: shall the books be given, and they shall believe in
- 18:32Speaker 1: them and rejoice over them. And then shall all the
- 18:35Speaker 1: righteous who have learnt there from all the paths of
- 18:38Speaker 1: uprightness be recompensed. Chapter one hundred and five. God and
- 18:43Speaker 1: the Messiah to dwell with man Chapter one hundred and five.
- 18:47Speaker 1: In those days the Lord bid them to summon and
- 18:50Speaker 1: testify to the children of earth concerning their wisdom, show
- 18:54Speaker 1: it unto them, for ye are their guides and a
- 18:57Speaker 1: recompense over the whole earth. For I and mine my
- 19:00Speaker 1: son will be united with them forever in the paths
- 19:03Speaker 1: of uprightness in their lives, and ye shall have peace. Rejoice,
- 19:07Speaker 1: you children of Uprightness. Amen. And of Section sixteen read
