Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Max/Bo start Game 3, Orioles new hire, Pages problem?
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Monday edition of Fair Territory. We're
- 0:04Speaker 1: going to get to the World Series Game three coming
- 0:06Speaker 1: up tonight in a second, but I want to start
- 0:09Speaker 1: the show today with the news of the moment, the
- 0:12Speaker 1: news that broke last night, first by Jeff Passon of ESPN.
- 0:15Speaker 1: The Orioles have a new manager. His name is Craig Albinas.
- 0:19Speaker 1: He was the bench coach for the Cleveland Guardians the
- 0:23Speaker 1: past two seasons under Steven Vote. Stephen Vote could very
- 0:26Speaker 1: well win his second straight Manager of the Year award
- 0:29Speaker 1: for what the Guardians did this season. So Craig Albinaz
- 0:33Speaker 1: is an interesting hire, and he's a guy who has
- 0:35Speaker 1: been kind of in demand in i'd say the last
- 0:39Speaker 1: two years. He's had some interviews, I believe the interview
- 0:41Speaker 1: with the Marlins last year and others. So here's someone
- 0:45Speaker 1: that was going to get a job this go around.
- 0:48Speaker 1: And what's interesting about this for me is how Cleveland
- 0:53Speaker 1: is a target for other teams when they're hiring executives,
- 0:57Speaker 1: when they're hiring managers, and just look at this hiring
- 0:59Speaker 1: cycle alone. Albern As to the Orioles Kay Correa, who
- 1:03Speaker 1: was a coach with Cleveland. He's going to be the
- 1:05Speaker 1: Mets new bench coach. He was also in San Francisco
- 1:08Speaker 1: with albern As before they were in Cleveland. And Matt Foreman,
- 1:12Speaker 1: the Guardian's assistant GM, is a finalist for the Rockies
- 1:17Speaker 1: head of baseball operations job. And it's interesting because with Foreman,
- 1:22Speaker 1: he is up against Amiel Sawde from the Arizona Diamondbacks,
- 1:26Speaker 1: who has been in the game a while. He was
- 1:28Speaker 1: with the Red Sox prior to the Diamondbacks, and to me,
- 1:32Speaker 1: it seems he's much more experienced than Foreman. And when
- 1:35Speaker 1: I ran that by someone in baseball recently, that person
- 1:39Speaker 1: said to me, yeah, but Cleveland is seen as the
- 1:42Speaker 1: model mid market team, the team that seems to compete
- 1:46Speaker 1: every year and how they do it. That secret sauce
- 1:49Speaker 1: is what everyone wants. So the Orioles have their man.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Still a number of managerial openings to go. We will
- 1:55Speaker 1: get to them in due time over the next several weeks.
- 1:59Speaker 1: But the World Series is still going on. Oh yes,
- 2:02Speaker 1: no major announcements during the World Series. This never happens.
- 2:04Speaker 1: That's the rule in baseball, which is never followed. But
- 2:07Speaker 1: we have Game three coming up, and this is an
- 2:09Speaker 1: interesting series, perhaps more interesting than some people anticipated when
- 2:13Speaker 1: we got going here, it's one to one, and tonight
- 2:17Speaker 1: we've got Max Scherzer against Tyler Glass. Now Max Scherzer
- 2:20Speaker 1: for the Blue Jays, Tyler Glass now for the Dodgers.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Bobaschet will be in the lineup again for the Blue Jays,
- 2:28Speaker 1: and Bobaschet, you know, before World Series Game one, had
- 2:31Speaker 1: not played since September sixth, a span of nearly seven weeks.
- 2:35Speaker 1: He had that spring left knee, and as I reported
- 2:38Speaker 1: on the broadcast in Game two, after the second inning
- 2:42Speaker 1: in Game one when he was playing, when he was
- 2:44Speaker 1: in the lineup, he put on a bulky knee brace.
- 2:47Speaker 1: He was wearing a sleeve around that knee, but he
- 2:50Speaker 1: decided he needed more, he needed bulk, so he did that.
- 2:53Speaker 1: I assume that's what he's going to wear tonight. Did
- 2:56Speaker 1: not play except for a pinch hit appearance in Game two.
- 2:59Speaker 1: The Jays are trying to take it easy with him
- 3:01Speaker 1: because of course he's coming off his injury. They don't
- 3:04Speaker 1: want to play him every day, even with the off
- 3:05Speaker 1: days in the World Series. But he's back in there tonight.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I presume he'll be batting clean up behind Guerrero. He
- 3:12Speaker 1: is a bat that is huge for them obviously when
- 3:15Speaker 1: he's healthy, and in talking to the Blue Jays players
- 3:18Speaker 1: during this series, they've been quite adamant about how he's
- 3:21Speaker 1: kind of their heart and soul in the lineup. And
- 3:24Speaker 1: a guy that didn't even get to twenty home runs
- 3:27Speaker 1: but nearly had one hundred RBIs this year, that's how
- 3:29Speaker 1: clutch he was. He's someone that they value a great
- 3:32Speaker 1: deal both in the clubhouse and of course when they're
- 3:35Speaker 1: putting the lineup together as a manager and coaching staff.
- 3:38Speaker 1: So Bobaschet back in the lineup. The pitching matchup, it's
- 3:41Speaker 1: an interesting one, to say the least, because of Max Scherzer,
- 3:46Speaker 1: forty one years old starting Game three, coming off that
- 3:49Speaker 1: brilliant performance in Game four of the ALCS that really
- 3:54Speaker 1: helped the Jays turn this thing around or turn that
- 3:57Speaker 1: thing around. Max Scherzer is pitching on extended rest, as
- 4:02Speaker 1: Shane Bieber would have been pitching on extended rest and
- 4:04Speaker 1: will in Game four. Blue Jay's manager John Steiner said
- 4:08Speaker 1: they wanted to give Bieber an extra day. I don't
- 4:11Speaker 1: really believe that's the reason. One guy is on ten
- 4:13Speaker 1: days rest, one guy's on eleven something along those lines,
- 4:16Speaker 1: they're okay. The real motivation here, it seems to me,
- 4:21Speaker 1: and from what I understand talking to some Blue Jays people,
- 4:24Speaker 1: is that Shane Bieber has given the Blue Jays an
- 4:27Speaker 1: awful lot since returning from Tommy John surgery. Remember they
- 4:31Speaker 1: traded for him while he was completing the final stages
- 4:35Speaker 1: of his rehabilitation, and he's pitched really well. He's done
- 4:39Speaker 1: extremely well for them, as well as anyone could have imagined,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and they simply don't want to push it, and they're
- 4:45Speaker 1: probably thinking he's got one good game left in him.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Aj Persinski mentioned this on foul Territory the other day.
- 4:51Speaker 1: So if you want Bieber to go all out in
- 4:54Speaker 1: that one game, game four would be the time to
- 4:56Speaker 1: do it. Scherzer can start game three, end games if necessary.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Not that big a deal with Game seven because that's
- 5:04Speaker 1: ultimately going to be a bullpen game, most likely short
- 5:07Speaker 1: leashes for everyone, But that seems to be the motivation here. Schurzer,
- 5:11Speaker 1: of course has big game experience, big game experience at
- 5:14Speaker 1: Dodger Stadium across North America, and he's coming off at
- 5:17Speaker 1: great outing. But it seems to me this was as
- 5:20Speaker 1: much motivated by Bieber as it was by Scherzer. Now
- 5:25Speaker 1: shures are at Dodger Stadium, this is going to be interesting.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Go back to twenty twenty one, the NLCS Game six.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Scherzer had pitched in relief in the Division Series in
- 5:34Speaker 1: Game five against the Giants. He came back in Game
- 5:37Speaker 1: two of the NLCS, wasn't particularly good and then told
- 5:41Speaker 1: the Dodgers his arm wasn't right. It was overcooked. That
- 5:44Speaker 1: was the term he used, overcooked, and the Dodgers wound
- 5:48Speaker 1: up using Walker Buehler on three days rest in Game
- 5:51Speaker 1: six against the Braves. Buehler did not really pitch all
- 5:54Speaker 1: that well as you might expect on three days rest,
- 5:56Speaker 1: and ultimately the Dodgers lost. The series. Has been something
- 6:01Speaker 1: of I don't know a villain is a right word,
- 6:03Speaker 1: but fans are not exactly short memory people in Dodger
- 6:08Speaker 1: Stadium and in LA in general, and they are going
- 6:11Speaker 1: to remember that Scherzer did not take the ball. Whether
- 6:14Speaker 1: he was justified and not up to it physically or not,
- 6:17Speaker 1: this is a thing. So I do expect him to
- 6:20Speaker 1: get a chili reception tonight. I also expect him not
- 6:24Speaker 1: to care one bit. Surezer is used to big game
- 6:27Speaker 1: environments he was telling us the other day how on
- 6:31Speaker 1: August eighth, I believe it was he pitched in Dodger
- 6:33Speaker 1: Stadium against Clayton Kershaw on Kobe Bryant Bobblehead night, and
- 6:37Speaker 1: he loved the energy, He loved the whole thing. So
- 6:41Speaker 1: it's going to be an interesting atmosphere, of course, the
- 6:43Speaker 1: Dodgers playing their first World Series game at home and
- 6:46Speaker 1: with Max Scherzer obviously starting for the other team. Sure's
- 6:51Speaker 1: aer amazing postseason history will go through it all tonight.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I'm sure on the broadcast. He's one of the great
- 6:56Speaker 1: central characters of our game and Game four in the
- 7:00Speaker 1: ALCS when he stared down and yelled at his manager,
- 7:04Speaker 1: that was one of the great Shurser moments and one
- 7:06Speaker 1: of the great Blue Jays moments of recent memory. Finally,
- 7:10Speaker 1: as we discussed World Series Game three, the Dodgers are
- 7:13Speaker 1: considering a lineup change. It's interesting with the Dodgers, how
- 7:17Speaker 1: they've become this starting pitching machine, and yet with that
- 7:21Speaker 1: great lineup o Tani and Freeman and Bets, they're not hitting.
- 7:24Speaker 1: They haven't hit in the postseason. They're averaging since the
- 7:28Speaker 1: start of the Division Series. Take out the Wildcard round
- 7:30Speaker 1: since the start of the division series, averaging three point
- 7:34Speaker 1: seven runs per game. Otani, Betts and Freeman combined one
- 7:38Speaker 1: ninety eight in that span seven to sixteen. Ops, those
- 7:42Speaker 1: guys haven't gotten it done. Now the team is still
- 7:44Speaker 1: ten and two in that time, or ten and two
- 7:47Speaker 1: in the postseason, I should say that includes the wildcard round.
- 7:50Speaker 1: But Dave Roberts is mulling a lineup change because Andy
- 7:54Speaker 1: pah Haz is four for forty three in the postseason,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and while he's a great defender, they're looking for a
- 7:59Speaker 1: little bit more the bottom of the lineup in front
- 8:02Speaker 1: of Otani, right, So what can they do if they
- 8:05Speaker 1: want to put Bajes or Piez on the bench, They
- 8:09Speaker 1: could go with Kigy Hernandez in centerfield or Alex Call.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Probably it would be Hernandez, and Hernandez is not as
- 8:16Speaker 1: gifted as centerfielder as Pies is. He's good out there,
- 8:20Speaker 1: hasn't played all that much out there this season, neither
- 8:22Speaker 1: his call for that matter. But they might want to
- 8:25Speaker 1: get calls on bas skills into the lineup and kind
- 8:29Speaker 1: of redo the bottom of the order that way. So
- 8:31Speaker 1: that's the decision. Dave Roberts is mulling here. We'll see
- 8:35Speaker 1: how it all plays out. We'll see what he ultimately decides. Here,
- 8:38Speaker 1: pies did of a hit in game two. I don't
- 8:41Speaker 1: know that that swings this one way or the other,
- 8:43Speaker 1: but they will lose something defensively if he's not in there,
- 8:46Speaker 1: and maybe the idea would be maybe to gain something offensively.
- 8:51Speaker 1: So there you have it. That is the preview of
- 8:54Speaker 1: game three. Talk about the orioles. We've got much more
- 8:57Speaker 1: to come. The inside dish will be in.

- 10:09Speaker 1: Time now for the inside dish, the part of the
- 10:11Speaker 1: show where I talk maybe about a story I've written,
- 10:13Speaker 1: a trend in the game, something else going on with
- 10:15Speaker 1: the sport. And today I want to go in a
- 10:17Speaker 1: little bit different direction. And I'm going to go in
- 10:20Speaker 1: a little bit of a different direction because of an
- 10:22Speaker 1: interview I did with Freddie Freeman before Game one of
- 10:25Speaker 1: the World Series in Toronto, and I asked Freddie about
- 10:29Speaker 1: being back in Canada. He's played, of course for Team Canada.
- 10:32Speaker 1: His mother and father were born in Canada, and he
- 10:35Speaker 1: talked about his mother, Rose Murray, who passed away from
- 10:38Speaker 1: Melanoba when he was only ten years old, and he
- 10:41Speaker 1: said that when he plays in Canada and people ask
- 10:45Speaker 1: him about his mom. To him, it's kind of a
- 10:48Speaker 1: cool thing because it keeps her spirit and it keeps
- 10:51Speaker 1: her memory alive for him, and it always brings a
- 10:54Speaker 1: smile to his face. And then answer kind of stuck
- 10:57Speaker 1: with me. And when Stand Up Cancer that moment happened
- 11:01Speaker 1: after or in the middle of game two, it hit
- 11:04Speaker 1: me again, and it hit me again that it's really
- 11:08Speaker 1: important to keep memories alive of certain people, and that's
- 11:11Speaker 1: kind of what the Stand Up to Cancer moment is about.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Also about honoring people who are alive and fighting that
- 11:17Speaker 1: horrible disease. And even with certain bow ties, not all
- 11:21Speaker 1: of them, but certain bow ties, part of my thinking
- 11:24Speaker 1: and motivation is to honor people who are fighting certain
- 11:28Speaker 1: things and also to honor the memories of those who
- 11:31Speaker 1: might have passed from a particular disease or condition. So
- 11:37Speaker 1: when you watch Stand Up to Cancer, you always see
- 11:40Speaker 1: the people standing, and it's always a poignant moment to
- 11:43Speaker 1: see everyone standing with their signs, with the names on
- 11:45Speaker 1: the signs. The players do this, the fans do this,
- 11:48Speaker 1: everyone involved in the game does it. And as someone
- 11:51Speaker 1: who is working on the broadcast, I'm always privileged to
- 11:54Speaker 1: be able to honor people and have my signs shown
- 11:58Speaker 1: because I'm part of the broadcast. They're going to show
- 12:00Speaker 1: me so this week or this stand up to cancer.
- 12:04Speaker 1: I had four names. You can see them right there.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Jim Henneman, David Calvert, Scott Miller, and Chris Obert. And
- 12:11Speaker 1: Jim Henneman and Scott Miller are two former baseball writers
- 12:15Speaker 1: who recently passed. And Jim is a guy that he
- 12:20Speaker 1: was my predecessor at the Baltimore Evening Son, actually my
- 12:24Speaker 1: predecessor on the beat when I joined the Son Evening
- 12:27Speaker 1: Son in nineteen eighty seven. They kind of took Jim,
- 12:30Speaker 1: who was an older guy at that time, not that
- 12:31Speaker 1: much older, but older than me, and they pushed him
- 12:35Speaker 1: aside and made him sort of what we would call
- 12:37Speaker 1: now a national baseball writer, but it really was more
- 12:41Speaker 1: a second Orioles writer, and that was a difficult thing
- 12:44Speaker 1: to accept for Jim. I'm sure this young guy coming
- 12:47Speaker 1: in I was twenty four at the time, I was clueless,
- 12:50Speaker 1: excuse me. But he did it with such grace and
- 12:53Speaker 1: he was a class act all the way and also
- 12:56Speaker 1: a really good writer in his own right. Scott Miller,
- 12:58Speaker 1: a lot of you guys know who he is, or was.
- 13:01Speaker 1: He was a brilliant baseball writer. His work appeared in
- 13:04Speaker 1: New York Times, CBS Sports Line, many other publications. Right
- 13:09Speaker 1: before he passed, he published a book on managers, which
- 13:12Speaker 1: is brilliant. And Scott is someone we all miss. David Calvert.
- 13:17Speaker 1: David Calvert is a friend of my editor at The Athletic,
- 13:22Speaker 1: our main baseball editor, Mark Carrigg, and Mark asked me
- 13:25Speaker 1: to include his name on one of my cards because
- 13:29Speaker 1: David is going through it right now. He's fighting an
- 13:31Speaker 1: aggressive form of leukemia. He is a guy who is
- 13:34Speaker 1: the TRIPAA photographer for the Reno Aces that's the Diamondbacks
- 13:38Speaker 1: top affiliate, and someone who his friends speak so highly
- 13:42Speaker 1: of and loved dearly. And then finally, Chris Over. Chris
- 13:46Speaker 1: Over is a member of the Fox Sports family. He's
- 13:49Speaker 1: a guy who's been on our crew for many, many years.
- 13:52Speaker 1: He first had a brain tumor in twenty twelve. He's
- 13:56Speaker 1: been dealing with stuff ever since, and he's someone that
- 13:59Speaker 1: we all Fox thinks so highly of and love. So
- 14:02Speaker 1: these are four names, Two have passed and two are
- 14:05Speaker 1: still with us that I chose to honor. And everyone
- 14:08Speaker 1: in that stadium had their own names, of course, had
- 14:11Speaker 1: their own people that they were doing trying to do
- 14:14Speaker 1: justice too and hopefully keep their names alive. And with
- 14:18Speaker 1: certain bow ties, not all of them, as I said,
- 14:20Speaker 1: certain bow ties, it's kind of the same idea. And
- 14:24Speaker 1: the bow tie for Game one of the World Series
- 14:27Speaker 1: was for the ALS Association, and ALS is, of course
- 14:31Speaker 1: a horrible disease. It's something a lot of people are
- 14:35Speaker 1: dealing with, and a lot of people who have been
- 14:37Speaker 1: part of baseball have dealt with in recent years. You
- 14:39Speaker 1: see the names there, Jim Caple, former baseball writer, most
- 14:44Speaker 1: recently of ESPN he passed away from ALS. Matt Kirkchin,
- 14:47Speaker 1: Tim's older brother, Tim's idol, great guy, Jim Poole, former
- 14:52Speaker 1: major league pitcher, a guy covered with the Baltimore Orioles.
- 14:54Speaker 1: And Chris Snow, former baseball writer for the Boston Globe
- 14:58Speaker 1: who went on to become the asistant general manager of
- 15:01Speaker 1: the Calgary Flames. So they're all fantastic people in their
- 15:04Speaker 1: own right, and all of them passed from ALS. And
- 15:08Speaker 1: of course one of our own right now, Sarah Langs,
- 15:10Speaker 1: is fighting ALS and doing it with such dignity and grace.
- 15:15Speaker 1: It's amazing she's still at these games. She was at
- 15:18Speaker 1: the World Series in Toronto. She's going to be here
- 15:20Speaker 1: in la And not only is she at the games,
- 15:23Speaker 1: she is working as she has always worked, giving us
- 15:26Speaker 1: these amazing statistical nuggets that are just something that enhanced
- 15:33Speaker 1: the game for all of us. They are just amazing
- 15:36Speaker 1: kinds of things that she comes up with, and she
- 15:38Speaker 1: does it every day, even while fighting this horrible disease.
- 15:41Speaker 1: So the point of this all is that certain people,
- 15:45Speaker 1: you want to keep their names alive, you want to
- 15:47Speaker 1: keep their memories alive if they've passed, and you want
- 15:50Speaker 1: to honor them if they're still with us. And listen,
- 15:53Speaker 1: we all care about the games, right, We all love
- 15:56Speaker 1: talking about the games and discussing them and debating them
- 15:59Speaker 1: and arguing about out them. But and you hear this,
- 16:02Speaker 1: and it's a cliche, there are times when we lose perspective.
- 16:06Speaker 1: And it kind of hit me when Freddy said what
- 16:09Speaker 1: he did about his mom. It hit me in the
- 16:11Speaker 1: stand up to cancer moment, And it hits me when
- 16:13Speaker 1: I wear certain bow ties that hey, man, yeah, the
- 16:17Speaker 1: games are important. The work that I try to do
- 16:20Speaker 1: is important. The work that everyone is doing around the
- 16:22Speaker 1: World Series is important. But the stuff what we're talking
- 16:27Speaker 1: about right now, far more important and far more necessary
- 16:30Speaker 1: to keep talking about and keep thinking about as we
- 16:34Speaker 1: go forward. You know, one purpose of the Stand Up
- 16:37Speaker 1: to Cancer thing is obviously to raise money, and one
- 16:41Speaker 1: purpose of the bow ties is to raise both money
- 16:44Speaker 1: and awareness for certain organizations. Stand Up to Cancer was
- 16:48Speaker 1: the one I wore for Game two. I've always thought
- 16:51Speaker 1: with the bow ties, listen, people aren't buying those bow
- 16:55Speaker 1: ties for the most part. Maybe they're giving to the
- 16:57Speaker 1: charitable organizations. I almost always include a link where you
- 17:01Speaker 1: can look up the organization and of course donate. But
- 17:05Speaker 1: I've always thought that the main thing here is raising awareness,
- 17:08Speaker 1: raising awareness of these different charities and doing all the
- 17:12Speaker 1: things that you can do within the context the small
- 17:16Speaker 1: context of what I'm doing to help along what's going
- 17:20Speaker 1: on with those particular organizations. So again, it's awareness. It's
- 17:26Speaker 1: the thing that has always motivated me with it since
- 17:29Speaker 1: the time I started wearing the bow ties and I
- 17:31Speaker 1: don't know, twenty ten or whatever it was, and it's
- 17:34Speaker 1: a thing that is a huge motivator today. So with that,
- 17:37Speaker 1: I want to talk about tonight's bow tie, which is
- 17:40Speaker 1: fitting in this conversation, fitting for all of what I
- 17:44Speaker 1: am discussing right here. It is a bow tie for
- 17:46Speaker 1: the Kirk Gibson Foundation for Parkinson's. Now, of course that
- 17:50Speaker 1: the World Series returns to Dodger Stadium, Kirk Gibson's on
- 17:53Speaker 1: everyone's mind. Kirk Gibson hit the amazing home run in
- 17:57Speaker 1: Game one of the nineteen eighty eight World Series. I
- 17:59Speaker 1: was lucky enough to be there off Dennis Eckersley. It's
- 18:02Speaker 1: one of the great moments in baseball history, certainly one
- 18:05Speaker 1: of the most memorable moments for people of a certain age,
- 18:08Speaker 1: and something that always brings a smile to your face.
- 18:11Speaker 1: The Vin Scully call Gibbey's trip around the bases all
- 18:15Speaker 1: of it well. For ten years now, Kirk Gibson has
- 18:18Speaker 1: been fighting a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. And he is
- 18:23Speaker 1: a guy that, as a player, was one of the
- 18:26Speaker 1: strongest individuals you could imagine, one of the fiercest competitors
- 18:30Speaker 1: you can imagine. And here he is. He's dealing with
- 18:33Speaker 1: Parkinson's and he's dealing it with it in the same
- 18:36Speaker 1: way that he was as a player. And there's a
- 18:39Speaker 1: story by Cody staven Hagen that we had up last
- 18:41Speaker 1: week about how he opened a thirty two thousand square
- 18:46Speaker 1: foot Kirk Gibson Center for Parkinson's in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
- 18:50Speaker 1: And at that center there are classes that help those
- 18:54Speaker 1: suffering with Parkinson's with cognitive therapy and physical therapy, and
- 18:58Speaker 1: Kirk Gibson's the driving behind all this, and through donations
- 19:02Speaker 1: and fundraising, what they've done is they've enabled these classes
- 19:06Speaker 1: to be free for all those suffering with Parkinson's who
- 19:09Speaker 1: want to come and take advantage of those facilities and
- 19:13Speaker 1: those classes that they have available. So the Kirkibston Foundation
- 19:18Speaker 1: is a great one and it's one that I'll honor
- 19:20Speaker 1: to wear it tonight. And again, Gibbee, we want to
- 19:23Speaker 1: honor you with this and we want people to know
- 19:26Speaker 1: what you're doing. And it's the same with all those
- 19:28Speaker 1: people who have passed, and it's the same with all
- 19:30Speaker 1: those people who are still dealing with whatever they're dealing with.
- 19:34Speaker 1: As Freddie said, let's keep their spirit alive. Let's keep
- 19:37Speaker 1: in appropriate cases, their memories alive. That really is something
- 19:41Speaker 1: that even in these most competitive games of the year,
- 19:45Speaker 1: it's kind of foremost in my mind. We'll be back
- 19:48Speaker 1: back with Grill and Ken.
- 19:50Speaker 2: This episode is brought to you by Square. Your favorite
- 19:53Speaker 2: neighborhood spots run on Square. Square is a proud partner

- 20:14Speaker 4: wam bam, we're out. It's cool. It's a way for
- 20:17Speaker 4: local businesses to make money and make it easy on
- 20:19Speaker 4: not only them, but also on me, the consumer, because
- 20:21Speaker 4: lord knows, I'm not making to so on and making
- 20:23Speaker 4: or so on anything.
- 20:24Speaker 1: No.

- 20:48Speaker 1: After at FTFAM all right, time now for grilling? Can
- 20:56Speaker 1: the part of the show? I answer your questions, So
- 20:59Speaker 1: let's get right to not waste any time. Here comes
- 21:01Speaker 1: the first question. It is from Richard Procter, who asked,
- 21:04Speaker 1: do you think that there will be any movement on
- 21:06Speaker 1: the CBA this offseason? As a result of the impending workstoppage?
- 21:10Speaker 1: Do you foresee if you were long term extensions and
- 21:13Speaker 1: long term free agent signings? Okay, two separate questions. Do
- 21:17Speaker 1: I expect movement on the CBA this off season? The
- 21:20Speaker 1: answer to that is no, because we're still too far
- 21:23Speaker 1: away from the expiration of the current deal, which is
- 21:26Speaker 1: December one, twenty twenty six. Like everything else in baseball,
- 21:30Speaker 1: like everything else in life, deadlines are what motivate people
- 21:34Speaker 1: to act. And even though it would make a lot
- 21:36Speaker 1: of sense to get this out of the way this offseason,
- 21:40Speaker 1: I just don't expect serious movement until the following off season,
- 21:44Speaker 1: when obviously the deadline of December first will be staring
- 21:48Speaker 1: everyone in the face. Now, how it will affect the
- 21:51Speaker 1: free agent market and extension markets, that's a good question.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I don't know the answer to that if I'm running
- 21:58Speaker 1: a team not terribly concerned about the possibility of missing
- 22:03Speaker 1: time in twenty twenty seven, even though at this moment
- 22:07Speaker 1: that possibility appears very real. If I were running a
- 22:10Speaker 1: team owning a team, because this is not going to
- 22:13Speaker 1: be the President of Baseball Operations choice, I would run
- 22:16Speaker 1: the team as I see fit, and run the team
- 22:20Speaker 1: as if this is not even happening, because one we're
- 22:23Speaker 1: not sure we're going to miss time. In fact, I
- 22:24Speaker 1: have a hard time believing still, for all the saber
- 22:28Speaker 1: rattling going on right now, I have a hard time believing,
- 22:31Speaker 1: with this sport as successful as it is right now,
- 22:33Speaker 1: that we're going to have a situation where the owners
- 22:36Speaker 1: are willing to shut down the sport, lose money, lose games,
- 22:39Speaker 1: and damage the reputation of the industry among sports fans.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Have a really hard time believing that didn't happen last time,
- 22:46Speaker 1: hasn't happened since nineteen ninety five. Now, the motivations here
- 22:50Speaker 1: are perhaps even stronger, and the strongest they've been since
- 22:54Speaker 1: ninety five. But again, this is a game of chicken,
- 22:57Speaker 1: and I don't believe either side is going to be
- 23:00Speaker 1: willing it's the owners actually who make the call here.
- 23:03Speaker 1: I don't believe the owners will be willing to go
- 23:05Speaker 1: through with this. I'm still not convinced. So I would
- 23:08Speaker 1: sign players to free agent contracts. I would sign them
- 23:11Speaker 1: to long term extensions. Easy for me to say. I'm
- 23:13Speaker 1: not the one spending the money. I know, but I
- 23:16Speaker 1: just don't see why it would necessarily disrupt things to
- 23:20Speaker 1: that degree. Now we've seen it already happen. The Angels
- 23:24Speaker 1: only gave Kirk Zuzuki a one year contract as a
- 23:27Speaker 1: new manager, it seems, because they want to keep their
- 23:30Speaker 1: options open entering a potential lockout situation. That's the Angels.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I don't necessarily believe it's going to be every team
- 23:37Speaker 1: all right now. Next question, this one comes from foul Territory.
- 23:41Speaker 1: What has surprised you about this World Series so far?
- 23:45Speaker 1: That's a good question. I would say the Dodgers' offense
- 23:49Speaker 1: has surprised me, and Otani not being this major force
- 23:53Speaker 1: has surprised me. O'tani's had that one great game, the
- 23:56Speaker 1: clincher in the NLCS, but he hasn't done all that
- 23:59Speaker 1: much else. The Home Running Game one was kind of
- 24:01Speaker 1: in garbage time, So I'm not sure I really count that.
- 24:05Speaker 1: I would say that is what has surprised me most,
- 24:07Speaker 1: that the Dodgers' offense has not been all that potent.
- 24:11Speaker 1: All right, one more question before we go, Let's see
- 24:13Speaker 1: what we have. This one comes from Jim Huerta, who asked,
- 24:17Speaker 1: do you believe John John Stanton will actually let Seattle
- 24:20Speaker 1: spend this offseason? Well, the way I would answer that
- 24:24Speaker 1: is past performance is an indicator of future performance. Right,
- 24:29Speaker 1: I'll believe it when I see it. They've been a
- 24:31Speaker 1: little bit more aggressive Seattle in at least in the
- 24:34Speaker 1: deadline this year when they took on Ajohano Suarez and
- 24:37Speaker 1: Josh Naylor. But it's not like they're going out and
- 24:40Speaker 1: spending like reckless sailors. So I don't necessarily believe they're
- 24:44Speaker 1: going to spend big. I think they will spend and
- 24:47Speaker 1: try to keep it going forward. Do I expect them
- 24:50Speaker 1: to be a major player in free agency? No? I don't.
- 24:53Speaker 1: They never have been, so let's see what happens. I
- 24:56Speaker 1: shouldn't say never. They've done some things. Adrian Beltre was one,
- 24:58Speaker 1: but in general, well, Sale Mariners have not been that
- 25:02Speaker 1: big a spender. All Right, I want to thank you
- 25:04Speaker 1: everyone for watching for listening. We will be back Friday
- 25:07Speaker 1: with Alana Rizzo. I will probably still be either at
- 25:10Speaker 1: the World Series recovering from the World Series, but a
- 25:12Speaker 1: Lota will be there. Maybe I'll be joining. I don't
- 25:14Speaker 1: even know, and we'll see what happens. Then have a
- 25:17Speaker 1: great week everyone, enjoy the rest of the World Series.
- 25:23Speaker 5: It's the best time of year to be a sports fan. Football, baseball,
- 25:26Speaker 5: basketball and hockey are all on the slate today. To celebrate,
- 25:30Speaker 5: we're giving you not one, but two parlay boost tokens
