- 0:09Speaker 1: All these are going to be fun. It's the third
- 0:13Speaker 1: hour of the Morning Show with Preston Sky. Good morning friends,
- 0:17Speaker 1: It's Monday, September sixteenth, and if you're a Florida State
- 0:21Speaker 1: football fan, you might be wearing black today. We are
- 0:24Speaker 1: joined by the managing editor of warchand dot com, Ladies
- 0:29Speaker 1: and gentlemen, the one the only Irish offel. Good morning sir.
- 0:33Speaker 1: How you doing, Preston, Well, that had to be fun
- 0:37Speaker 1: to cover.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah, it's amazing that it seems to be getting worse,
- 0:42Speaker 2: not better, after scoring what twenty one points in the
- 0:45Speaker 2: first game than they scored thirteen. Now they scored twelve,
- 0:48Speaker 2: So maybe it's a countdown. I'm not sure exactly what's
- 0:52Speaker 2: going on on that offense.
- 0:53Speaker 1: What stands out to you about the game? What stands
- 0:56Speaker 1: out to you in the subsequent days about what the
- 0:59Speaker 1: coach coaches have said?
- 1:02Speaker 2: Uh, you know, I think the biggest thing to me,
- 1:04Speaker 2: you know, at the game, was that there's no more
- 1:06Speaker 2: trying to figure out what's wrong. You know. I think
- 1:09Speaker 2: in the you know, Georgia Tech, you know, you start thinking, okay, man,
- 1:12Speaker 2: it's a week zero game, it's in Ireland. There's a
- 1:15Speaker 2: lot of variables here that you don't normally face first
- 1:17Speaker 2: game with DJU and they look, you know, obviously poor,
- 1:21Speaker 2: and you figure, okay, well maybe that's what happened. And
- 1:23Speaker 2: then they go and lose to Boston College at home,
- 1:26Speaker 2: and now you're thinking, Okay, there may be real problems here.
- 1:28Speaker 2: But then as I started thinking about it last week,
- 1:30Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, well, you know, you're coming back from
- 1:33Speaker 2: Ireland and you and you're maybe that game, maybe you
- 1:36Speaker 2: lost that game and it beat you twice. You know,
- 1:38Speaker 2: you came into the season thinking you're one of the
- 1:40Speaker 2: best teams in the country, You're gonna win the ACC,
- 1:41Speaker 2: you're gonna make the playoffs. You're zero to one. Maybe
- 1:44Speaker 2: they had a tough time recovering from that and that
- 1:46Speaker 2: beat them against Boss College. And now after about week
- 1:49Speaker 2: you're like, no, this is just a bad football team
- 1:51Speaker 2: and they do all the things that bad football teams do,
- 1:53Speaker 2: and that is much more concerning because that doesn't get
- 1:57Speaker 2: fixed quickly.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Coach Mike Norvell obviously is going to be very careful
- 2:01Speaker 1: about what he says publicly. Are you hearing anything behind
- 2:06Speaker 1: the scenes.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I think he's got to be considering everything,
- 2:10Speaker 2: But he's pretty he's he does not have a big
- 2:12Speaker 2: circle in terms of what he discusses inside the team,
- 2:15Speaker 2: you know, like if he's thinking about making changes to
- 2:19Speaker 2: his staff or or even you know, major personnel decisions.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I don't think everybody in the program is going to
- 2:25Speaker 2: know that, And so I haven't heard anything directly, but
- 2:29Speaker 2: I mean common sense tells you you know, he's a
- 2:31Speaker 2: bright guy. He's gotten to this point in his career.
- 2:34Speaker 2: This clearly isn't working. So during the season, I don't
- 2:38Speaker 2: know how much there's that he can do early in
- 2:40Speaker 2: the season in terms of a staff standpoint. Certainly as
- 2:43Speaker 2: the year goes on he could consider making some changes.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Or the problem is, I don't know that there's anything.
- 2:49Speaker 2: You know, sometimes if you have, say a defensive coordinator
- 2:52Speaker 2: who's not doing well midway through the season, but you've
- 2:55Speaker 2: got a sharp, young defensive assistant coach, you say, Okay,
- 2:59Speaker 2: let's see if this guy can call the plays that
- 3:01Speaker 2: The problem really has been the offense, especially this pass game,
- 3:05Speaker 2: and there's nobody Mike norvellen this staff he's going to
- 3:07Speaker 2: turn the offense over to. So I don't think anything
- 3:09Speaker 2: on the staff is going to change during the season,
- 3:11Speaker 2: unless late in the year. He just wants to make
- 3:13Speaker 2: a point that he's making a change, and then the
- 3:16Speaker 2: only really change he can make on offense is at quarterback,
- 3:19Speaker 2: and he has refused to address that. When he's asked
- 3:22Speaker 2: about it, he just talks about the offense as a whole,
- 3:25Speaker 2: not about dj ung Away. And you know, I gotta
- 3:28Speaker 2: believe he's got to at least strongly consider making a
- 3:31Speaker 2: move to Brockland, but there's been no indication that that's
- 3:34Speaker 2: going to happen.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Irah, how much of the impatience, if we put it politely,
- 3:41Speaker 1: of the fan base ends up coming back to the
- 3:44Speaker 1: fact that we're not really dealing with collegiate athletics anymore.
- 3:49Speaker 1: These are paid professionals in the high profile positions.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I think it's it's part of it. But listen, you know,
- 3:56Speaker 2: I mean, you know, we can we can tell ourselves
- 4:00Speaker 2: that we weren't like this as fans or media back
- 4:03Speaker 2: in the day, but you know, we've watched quarterbacks get
- 4:06Speaker 2: booed thirty forty years ago in college football. So but
- 4:09Speaker 2: it definitely ramps it up a notch. And what it
- 4:12Speaker 2: really does is, I think where the frustration really mounts
- 4:15Speaker 2: isn't about performance, but when it's effort. If you see
- 4:19Speaker 2: a defensive end not playing full speed, if you see
- 4:23Speaker 2: a receiver not blocking and you know those guys are
- 4:25Speaker 2: getting money, or a quarterback not putting his body on
- 4:29Speaker 2: the line and you know that they're getting a large
- 4:30Speaker 2: sums of money, then it becomes more frustrating because it's like, listen, man,
- 4:34Speaker 2: you took all that money. You have to perform. That's
- 4:37Speaker 2: where I think the most frustration is if it's just
- 4:39Speaker 2: a guy that makes mistakes. I think people can live
- 4:42Speaker 2: with that, even people get paid make mistakes, but you
- 4:45Speaker 2: can't have lack of effort.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Hira Chavelle with us for a couple more segments here
- 4:53Speaker 1: from war chand dot com and Ira, let me advance
- 4:57Speaker 1: another thought. You know, dj ujungal A is always been
- 5:01Speaker 1: a serviceable quarterback. Maybe not a highlight reel, but he
- 5:06Speaker 1: played well at Oregon State last year. Some would say that,
- 5:11Speaker 1: you know, the handwriting was on the wall though when
- 5:13Speaker 1: he got kind of lost his job at Clemson. But
- 5:16Speaker 1: still he's not even playing to his own standard, whatever
- 5:20Speaker 1: that might be. How much of this is just a
- 5:24Speaker 1: misfit of a quarterback to a system, and how much
- 5:27Speaker 1: of it is the guys around him not doing much
- 5:31Speaker 1: to help him.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I think it's a combination of both, you know, I
- 5:35Speaker 2: think that I think when you look back at last year,
- 5:39Speaker 2: the way Florida State's offensive line played, it did not
- 5:43Speaker 2: play very well, especially as the year went on. And
- 5:45Speaker 2: you know, they went out and got three new portal editions. Well,
- 5:47Speaker 2: none of them have had a huge impact to help
- 5:50Speaker 2: this offensive line, but I'm guessing Mike Norval thought they would,
- 5:53Speaker 2: and I think he thought he could change what they
- 5:55Speaker 2: do offensively, so more of a run oriented attack and
- 5:59Speaker 2: you know, kind of take shots with the passing game,
- 6:01Speaker 2: but not necessarily be a quarterback that has to throw
- 6:03Speaker 2: at thirty or forty times a game. And so but
- 6:06Speaker 2: the problem is Mike Garvel completely misevaluated what this offensive
- 6:10Speaker 2: line could be with this running game could be. And
- 6:12Speaker 2: then DJ doesn't seem very comfortable in terms of making
- 6:15Speaker 2: all the line checks and reads. So you brought in
- 6:18Speaker 2: a quarterback for one year, but you didn't really build
- 6:20Speaker 2: things to his talents, and I think you misevaluated what
- 6:25Speaker 2: you had around him. So it's just been a complete mess.
- 6:27Speaker 2: But you know, I don't know that it's DJ's fault.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I looked more at Mike Norvell that you know, you
- 6:32Speaker 2: thought you either thought this guy was gonna work better
- 6:35Speaker 2: in your system because your system was going to be better,
- 6:37Speaker 2: or you thought you were going to turn him into
- 6:39Speaker 2: a better quarterback knowing some of your deficiencies. Either way,
- 6:43Speaker 2: there's a misevaluation. And but no, he's not getting any help.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Even in this game. There were a couple there were
- 6:48Speaker 2: some nice catches later in the game, but there were
- 6:50Speaker 2: also some drop balls, and the offensive line's been terrible.
- 6:53Speaker 2: So it's a combination. But I think the biggest problem
- 6:56Speaker 2: was it was a bad fit.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Everyone would agree my Norvel has proven himself to be
- 7:01Speaker 1: a very good coach and maybe a better person. Is
- 7:05Speaker 1: that a fair statement?
- 7:07Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure, I agree with that.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Now, having said that, is there any chance that because
- 7:13Speaker 1: DJ came in as basically he's what a fifty year
- 7:16Speaker 1: senior and this is it for him? Is there a
- 7:20Speaker 1: sense of loyalty here that he's just he feels a
- 7:22Speaker 1: sense of owing it to DJ to let him stay
- 7:25Speaker 1: on the field, even though that is not what's best
- 7:28Speaker 1: for this team at this point.
- 7:31Speaker 2: I think it's possible. I think that happens sometimes with
- 7:33Speaker 2: coaches and there's two shining examples. With Mike Norvell. You know, obviously,
- 7:38Speaker 2: you know, there was a lot of pressure on my
- 7:40Speaker 2: chach Norvel to make a change with after Jordan Travis
- 7:43Speaker 2: after the twenty twenty one season. A lot of people
- 7:45Speaker 2: wanted Norvel to go get a transfer quarterback. There was
- 7:48Speaker 2: not a lot of confidence in Jordan Travis, even though
- 7:50Speaker 2: he had done some things in the last couple of
- 7:51Speaker 2: years to help them out. People wanted a quote unquote
- 7:54Speaker 2: real quarterback and more accurate quarterback. And Norvell stuck with
- 7:58Speaker 2: Jordan Travis, believed in him and paid off handsibly for
- 8:01Speaker 2: everybody involved. Yep. And then you know, I think Ryan
- 8:05Speaker 2: Fitzgerald a place kicker. I mean, he was in a
- 8:07Speaker 2: complete mess three years ago and it looked like I mean,
- 8:11Speaker 2: he had the yips. I mean, he couldn't connect on
- 8:13Speaker 2: a thirty five yard till goal, let alone a fifty
- 8:16Speaker 2: yard field goal. He stuck with him and now he's
- 8:18Speaker 2: turned into maybe the best kicker in the country. So
- 8:20Speaker 2: there are examples of that. And I think as a
- 8:22Speaker 2: coach you always want that if you believe the kid
- 8:24Speaker 2: can do it. But to your point, you nailed it
- 8:27Speaker 2: at some point the offense is not moving, and you know,
- 8:31Speaker 2: we can blame everybody else, but the quarterback gets all
- 8:35Speaker 2: you know, they get all the glory when it's good.
- 8:37Speaker 2: They get most of the blame when it's bad. And
- 8:39Speaker 2: that's where I think he has to make a change,
- 8:41Speaker 2: just to let the team know he's willing to make
- 8:43Speaker 2: a change and see what it looks like with a
- 8:44Speaker 2: different quarterback.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Reading between the lines. What do you think the team
- 8:48Speaker 1: is thinking right now?
- 8:51Speaker 2: I think they're lost. I think it's a it's you know, listen,
- 8:54Speaker 2: the one thing I've learned through the years is if
- 8:58Speaker 2: I've learned one thing about players is they know results
- 9:01Speaker 2: more than anything else. And if a coaching staff is
- 9:04Speaker 2: helping them win and get ready for the NFL and
- 9:08Speaker 2: help them in their careers, they will love that coaching staff.
- 9:11Speaker 2: If you lose a lot of football games, they're going
- 9:13Speaker 2: to question just like everybody else, because they don't always
- 9:16Speaker 2: have all the answers. They just see the results also,
- 9:18Speaker 2: and they know it's going to affect them in the
- 9:20Speaker 2: long term. And it's certainly not any fun playing this
- 9:23Speaker 2: game right now, so I guarantee you they're going to
- 9:26Speaker 2: have challenges right now. Keeping these guys together, because it's
- 9:29Speaker 2: just human nature. If you work for a company that
- 9:32Speaker 2: was the worst in the industry in your profession, which
- 9:36Speaker 2: is what Florida State is right now, an offensive football,
- 9:38Speaker 2: you're going to question the management. And I'm sure that's happening.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Hi, Racha Pelle with us one more segment. We're going
- 9:43Speaker 1: to one more question about this weekend before we switch
- 9:46Speaker 1: to the other side of the ball. And maybe I'll
- 9:48Speaker 1: invert that a little bit when we come back. I
- 9:51Speaker 1: saw a meme going around that said FSU's petitioning for
- 9:54Speaker 1: a new one hundred and twelve team playoff. Ira Chafelle
- 10:01Speaker 1: back with me one more segment. All right, let's let's
- 10:03Speaker 1: do this. Let's talk about the other side of the ball. Yes,
- 10:06Speaker 1: the defense seemed to play better. I thought the defensive
- 10:09Speaker 1: tackles we were much more assertive. But boy, Ira, it
- 10:13Speaker 1: looks like a fire drill in the second and third
- 10:16Speaker 1: levels between the linebackers and the secondary.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, look, I mean Mike Norvell, I mean,
- 10:21Speaker 2: excuse me, Adam Fuller, the defensive coordinator, when they've tried
- 10:24Speaker 2: to play some zone in the past that has not
- 10:26Speaker 2: gone well, and I think he's just pretty much determined
- 10:28Speaker 2: to play man, but with some sort of zone concepts
- 10:31Speaker 2: where they'll pass guys off to each other, so it's
- 10:34Speaker 2: not like I've got the X receiver and I'm gonna
- 10:36Speaker 2: stay with him no matter what. When they're in those
- 10:38Speaker 2: condensed formations and things like that, the dbs have to
- 10:40Speaker 2: communicate linebackers about okay, if you know, if the inside
- 10:44Speaker 2: guy is yours the outside guy's mind, and that's where
- 10:47Speaker 2: a lot of the breakdowns are. And then in the
- 10:48Speaker 2: wheel routes and tight ends with their releases, they just
- 10:51Speaker 2: don't see those. And to me, I have to assume
- 10:55Speaker 2: it's this defense is too complex for these guys. Now,
- 10:58Speaker 2: maybe it worked last year. They worked well last year,
- 11:01Speaker 2: but these particular guys aren't getting it. At some point,
- 11:04Speaker 2: you can't just be mad at them as a coach.
- 11:06Speaker 2: You have to figure some things out scheme wise. And
- 11:09Speaker 2: that's where I'm disappointed, because listen, the scariest thing is
- 11:12Speaker 2: I wrote it in a piece I'm posting today. You
- 11:15Speaker 2: haven't even faced the best athletes you're gonna face yet.
- 11:17Speaker 2: So a lot of these plays that are going for
- 11:18Speaker 2: fifteen or twenty yards, these passes to the backs or
- 11:21Speaker 2: tight ends, they're gonna go the distance because you're gonna
- 11:23Speaker 2: face better athletes as the season goes on.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a little scary when you look at the schedule.
- 11:29Speaker 1: The possibility is there ira for for what one two wins?
- 11:36Speaker 2: I mean, I will not pick them to win a
- 11:38Speaker 2: football game again until they win a game. I mean,
- 11:41Speaker 2: like I could. There's no way I could pick them
- 11:42Speaker 2: to beat Cal this weekend. I mean, Kelly's are a
- 11:45Speaker 2: good football team, and so yeah, on the road at SMU,
- 11:49Speaker 2: how would you pick this team to go on the
- 11:50Speaker 2: road and beat really anybody? So yeah, everything's on the table.
- 11:54Speaker 2: There's no game I feel certain they will win other
- 11:57Speaker 2: than Charleston's Southern at home late in the year. And
- 12:00Speaker 2: I you know, man, Charleston Southern's going to have eleven
- 12:02Speaker 2: on the field on both sides of the ball, So
- 12:04Speaker 2: it's not a sure thing.
- 12:05Speaker 1: And they're likely going to be playing with some confidence
- 12:08Speaker 1: if we see unfold what we've seen so far, and
- 12:11Speaker 1: you know what happens when teams play with confidence.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Well, I mean there's nothing you could have other than
- 12:17Speaker 2: confidence going into this game and then into a game
- 12:19Speaker 2: against the Florida Stay team, because not only are they
- 12:22Speaker 2: they really good at anything, there's nothing they're great at.
- 12:26Speaker 2: I think they do have some talent on the defensive line,
- 12:28Speaker 2: but other than that, nothing really scares you. And then
- 12:30Speaker 2: on top of that, they make so many dumb mistakes.
- 12:33Speaker 2: I feel like you would think, well, we'll just wait
- 12:35Speaker 2: it out and they'll make the mistakes. And you saw
- 12:37Speaker 2: it in that game. They fumbled the second player of
- 12:39Speaker 2: the game, deep in their own territory. They muff a
- 12:41Speaker 2: punt at leads to another score. They just they line
- 12:44Speaker 2: up off sides on a on a punt. I mean,
- 12:46Speaker 2: you know, you just they do all the things that
- 12:48Speaker 2: bad teams do well.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Back in the day, there would be one approach, and
- 12:53Speaker 1: that would be the coach would kill them, right, I mean,
- 12:55Speaker 1: the coach would just make them miserable in practice and
- 12:58Speaker 1: get their attention that way. That does doesn't work very
- 13:00Speaker 1: often anymore, and that certainly doesn't seem to be the
- 13:04Speaker 1: personality of Mike Norvel. So what's your sense, what do
- 13:07Speaker 1: you think happens this week in practice?
- 13:11Speaker 2: That's a great question. You know, the approach so far
- 13:14Speaker 2: has been that we don't need to change everything, we
- 13:17Speaker 2: just need to do things better. Is there is that fair?
- 13:22Speaker 2: I'm sorry?
- 13:22Speaker 1: Is that fair?
- 13:25Speaker 2: I mean, I understand the approach. I think you know, again,
- 13:28Speaker 2: as we talked about earlier, Mike Dorvel has a tendency
- 13:30Speaker 2: to want to believe in players and assume they're going
- 13:33Speaker 2: to get better. But I think it's it's foolhardy at
- 13:35Speaker 2: this point. To me, you need to be giving way
- 13:39Speaker 2: more guys opportunities than the guys that are playing right now.
- 13:42Speaker 2: And you know, and again that stinks. That probably means
- 13:45Speaker 2: you might lose more games, but it might give you
- 13:47Speaker 2: a better chance in the future, because listen, this is
- 13:50Speaker 2: a team with a lot of seniors. And I know
- 13:52Speaker 2: you don't want to give up on the season and
- 13:53Speaker 2: you don't want to say that this season is a
- 13:55Speaker 2: lost cause. But the reality is it's going to be
- 13:58Speaker 2: a lost cause if you keep doing what you're doing well.
- 14:00Speaker 1: And I've reminded a lot of folks Alabama's first on
- 14:03Speaker 1: deck next year, and you you have the potential makings
- 14:07Speaker 1: of a boat race if if you don't change some
- 14:10Speaker 1: things right now and get better. So with that said,
- 14:13Speaker 1: Ira who's walking out of the tunnel is the starting
- 14:15Speaker 1: quarterback this Saturday night.
- 14:17Speaker 2: I think it's a fifty to fifty proposition. Honestly, I'd
- 14:20Speaker 2: like to tell you I'm sure it's going to be Brocklyn.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I think it should be Brocklan. But I also, as
- 14:25Speaker 2: you pointed out before, Mike Lurvel wants the best of
- 14:27Speaker 2: these guys, and he's got a loyalty, you know, he's
- 14:31Speaker 2: predisposed to be loyal, and I think there's there's a
- 14:34Speaker 2: decent chance he sticks with DJ with huncle A, but
- 14:36Speaker 2: I think that's unfair to DJ too. At this point.
- 14:38Speaker 2: I think DJ needs a break to let this offense
- 14:41Speaker 2: and maybe people realize, hey, it's not him if it
- 14:44Speaker 2: doesn't work with Brocklynn either. But you know, I would
- 14:47Speaker 2: make the move, but I could not guarantee you that's
- 14:49Speaker 2: going to happen.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Well, the one thing, I'm not a football coach, but
- 14:52Speaker 1: I've watched enough of it to know that if your
- 14:54Speaker 1: quarterback's running an option dive and he's not willing to
- 14:57Speaker 1: take the ball and run, you don't have an option
- 14:59Speaker 1: dive play.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that is fair. I mean, just if there was
- 15:03Speaker 2: a threat that, if there was a threat that he
- 15:05Speaker 2: would keep the ball. And then sometimes he does keep
- 15:08Speaker 2: the ball, and that's and it seems like at the
- 15:10Speaker 2: worst times it's a mess. I thought he'd be able
- 15:12Speaker 2: to read those plays better. He is not, So it's
- 15:15Speaker 2: just everywhere you turn it's been a disaster.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Well, at least we'll be together, buddy. As my dad
- 15:20Speaker 1: would say, misery loves company. So uh, thanks so much
- 15:24Speaker 1: for the time this morning. We'll talk again next week.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Thanks pressing takinger.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Irischaffelle from war chant dot com. There's some great features
- 15:32Speaker 1: throughout the week. Check him out at war chant dot com.
