- 0:30This is it.
- 0:30This is the end of season five.
- 0:32Can you believe it?
- 0:33The end of the season as we know it.
- 0:38That's a good REM pull there, Tanya.
- 0:40Might be the end of Tanya's voice before we get through this.
- 0:43We'll see how long it lasts.
- 0:45All right.
- 0:45Well, let's rock and roll.
- 0:46Bring us in, Brad.
- 0:48Cue the intro music.
- 0:50Welcome to drive through episode number 54.
- 0:54This is our monthly recap where we put together a menu of automotive,
- 0:57motorsport, and entertaining.
- 1:00Quote unquote car Jason news.
- 1:02Now, let's pull up to window number one for some automotive
- 1:05news Are you drinking the dew?
- 1:07Are you not feeling well?
- 1:08I have been fighting a plague fire all week.
- 1:11Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
- 1:13I don't know whose bad air I breathed in.
- 1:16It was the bike expo that we went to.
- 1:18Maybe it could have been the bike expo, yeah.
- 1:21That was a dangerous thing.
- 1:22Tanya invited me to go with her to a bicycle expo.
- 1:25I'd never been, I figured that's like a swap meet, right, like anything else.
- 1:28I've been to car swap meets before and other stuff, you know, craft
- 1:31fairs and whatnot, but bicycles?
- 1:32Sounds cool.
- 1:33I was a bad boy.
- 1:35What did you buy?
- 1:35I bought a French bike.
- 1:37You bought a Peugeot?
- 1:38I bought a 72 Peugeot.
- 1:40One owner, the guy's son was selling it dirt cheap, all original with
- 1:44patina and everything, gorgeous bike.
- 1:46It's all white.
- 1:47So I finally own a Peugeot.
- 1:48And then I bought a Bianchi as well.
- 1:50Frame.
- 1:51And it's an 81.
- 1:52And I'm going to actually turn that into a street bike to pedal around on.
- 1:56And I bought a frame for one of my daughters.
- 1:59It's a clone to my wife's old bike.
- 2:02She had a cyclocross by giant.
- 2:03And so the guy was selling the frame for 40 bucks with the stem
- 2:07and the headpiece and everything.
- 2:08I was like, for 40 bucks, I mean, just in case the other one cracks, I'll take it.
- 2:12You know what I mean?
- 2:12I walked away with.
- 2:13Two frames and a complete bike for not a ton of money.
- 2:16And I'm like, Oh man, I guess I'm getting back into biking now a little bit.
- 2:19So this will be fun.
- 2:23It's good for your health.
- 2:25So, so at the, tell me about this bike expo.
- 2:27Was it literally just a swap meet or was there a combination of like
- 2:30new manufacturers, kind of like a SEMA meet swap meet kind of thing?
- 2:34There was more carbon fiber there than there was probably
- 2:37in a formula one paddock.
- 2:38It was impressive.
- 2:39Was there anything in, from like the BMX world?
- 2:42There was everything you could think of.
- 2:43Absolutely.
- 2:43Tandems.
- 2:44Cause I used to be really big in the, the BMX bikes and stuff like that.
- 2:48They've got some bikes now that would look normal for you based on your size.
- 2:52They got these tires that are like six inches wide, like a motorcycle.
- 2:55And they're like the size of a horse.
- 2:57When I bought my truck, I almost bought one of those instead, but it
- 3:00was just, it looked like a beachcomber.
- 3:02Yeah, they're crazy.
- 3:03It was not like a mountain bike or anything like that.
- 3:05It was just a cruiser with these big fat tires for like 2, 500 bucks.
- 3:09And I was like, no, not going to do it.
- 3:11Not going to do it.
- 3:12Although we're rambling on about this bike expo, it is car related.
- 3:15Car Jason.
- 3:16Yeah, the car manufacturer Peugeot made bicycles and sewing machines
- 3:20and a million other things.
- 3:21And then Bianchi.
- 3:22As in Alto Bianchi also related to Piaggio who makes the Vespas
- 3:27and the Apes and all that stuff.
- 3:29So both of those bicycles come from car manufacturers.
- 3:32I think that's pretty cool.
- 3:33You realize none of our listeners could translate what you just said.
- 3:37We're Americans.
- 3:38I Americanized my pronunciation.
- 3:40Yes, you're going to be kicked out of the press conference if you
- 3:42don't clean it up there, mister.
- 3:46Eric, I can't talk about any of these articles right now because
- 3:49all I can do is see your hair and it looks like an early 2000s emo singer.
- 3:55I swear.
- 3:55Are you a singer for the cult?
- 3:57Were you in the band The Cure?
- 3:58Do you have black painted fingernails?
- 4:01What's going on?
- 4:02What is up with your hair?
- 4:03You can't see it, man.
- 4:04Because tonight'll be the night that I devour the night!
- 4:09I think it's the sweep that's happening.
- 4:11It's the sweep.
- 4:12Yes.
- 4:12It's starting to sweep.
- 4:13Sweep it back.
- 4:14Please.
- 4:14I cannot concentrate.
- 4:16I'm getting hot over here.
- 4:17I'm getting turned on.
- 4:18I want to go listen to Depeche Mode.
- 4:21Come on guys.
- 4:22Fix it for me.
- 4:22Please.
- 4:23All the stuff that's on my playlist.
- 4:24It's all good.
- 4:25Yes.
- 4:25I know.
- 4:26I know.
- 4:26I know.
- 4:27Good Lord.
- 4:28Well, continuing with our banter here before we head into our normally
- 4:32scheduled ranting and raving.
- 4:34As with tradition in the February episode, we got to talk about the Super Bowls.
- 4:38It's plural Super Bowl as in football and the Rolex 24 hours.
- 4:42So let's quickly talk about the extremely disappointing Super
- 4:46Bowl commercials this year.
- 4:47Let's not, I don't care about those.
- 4:48Let's talk about that GNX during the Kendrick Lamar concert.
- 4:53Now that, that was a thing of beauty.
- 4:56Was it real though?
- 4:57Or was it just a Monte Carlo with the grill painted black because they came up.
- 5:01through the trap door.
- 5:02That couldn't have been a real GNX.
- 5:04There's only a handful of GNXs.
- 5:06There's videos of him doing interviews with like actors and
- 5:09stuff in a GNX like driving around.
- 5:12I think that was his car.
- 5:13I think that was his car.
- 5:15But I would imagine whatever was on stage in the Super Bowl.
- 5:18Obviously it was not his car, but probably a replica shell because
- 5:22people were coming up from underneath the stage and through the car.
- 5:26Yeah, it was like a clown car.
- 5:28That was a rep. That was a Monte Carlo with a grill.
- 5:30I guess I missed that part that they were actually coming up through the car.
- 5:33I was focused on him.
- 5:34So it had the wheels that had the grill and they painted it black.
- 5:37I mean, you can buy any of those G bodies and make it look like a
- 5:40G and X. Yeah, you can buy them like you can buy, like, Vitos.
- 5:43Now, one of our neighbors has a GNX, and he was telling me at one
- 5:47of the block parties, you know, these car guys get together, and we
- 5:50don't want to talk to anybody else.
- 5:52So he said they only made a couple hundred of those cars, and these days,
- 5:55it's a six figure plus car if you were to sell it, like, at Mecum, or something
- 6:00like that, because they're pretty rare.
- 6:01So you're trying to tell me that the Showcase performer at the Super
- 6:07Bowl can't afford a six figure GNX car, according to the interwebs.
- 6:13Yes, Tonya, break it down for us.
- 6:15He does in fact own a 1987 GNX and as one of our members pointed out,
- 6:22it is also the album name for his most recent album and it's featured
- 6:27in the artwork and obviously it was featured in the Super Bowl performance.
- 6:31The reason he has the GNX, as the story goes, was because when he was born
- 6:37in 1987, his father brought him home from the hospital in the Buick Regal.
- 6:43The base model.
- 6:44Okay, yep.
- 6:45So there's some sort of homage thing going there.
- 6:47Who would want the Buick Regal if you could have a GNX and you can afford it?
- 6:50Of course.
- 6:51Yep, yep, yep.
- 6:52And then there's the one in the middle.
- 6:53There's the Grand National because they're not the same thing, right?
- 6:55There's the Grand National package.
- 6:57Then there was the GNX, which was even more.
- 7:00It was more.
- 7:01It was even more.
- 7:02It was more.
- 7:03Just more.
- 7:04Would he really stand on the hood of his Six figure car.
- 7:08It's a rare car.
- 7:09I mean it might not seem like much but it is I've seen tick
- 7:13tockers Stand on the front of their Rolls Royces and their Lambos.
- 7:16I guess so people are dumb AF It's something tells me he's probably
- 7:20got a couple of spare hoods and fenders, you know in his garage
- 7:23somewhere Maybe you can afford it.
- 7:25He is a multi, you know million dollar multi platinum Grammy winning Rapper.
- 7:30Uh huh.
- 7:31And he hates Drake.
- 7:33Oh my God.
- 7:34And apparently everybody at the Super Bowl hates Drake.
- 7:37Including Samuel L. Jackson.
- 7:39Including Drake.
- 7:40Drake hates Drake.
- 7:41You know, this just in.
- 7:42He also is a Pulitzer Prize winner.
- 7:45What?
- 7:46Oh yeah?
- 7:47That's awesome.
- 7:47There were three commercials that stuck out to me in the Super Bowl.
- 7:51They redid the Bruce Springsteen America Jeep, Jeep is America commercial.
- 7:56It was Henry Ford or Harrison, it was Harrison Ford who's just as
- 8:01old driving a new Wrangler four XE.
- 8:07And so it was a pretty long commercial.
- 8:09I thought it was really funny at the end.
- 8:11It was a little tongue in cheek.
- 8:11He said, you know, I really love Jeeps, even though my last name is.
- 8:14Ford, and he kind of whispers it.
- 8:16So I was like, that's cute.
- 8:16It was a little too long, but basically it was a redo of the Springsteen commercial.
- 8:21The WeatherTech Grandmas, I got tired of seeing that commercial.
- 8:24That just got old.
- 8:25Let the word go.
- 8:26There was WeatherTech Grandmas?
- 8:27In that old lowrider Buick that they were in, like a 50s, whatever the
- 8:31heck it was, and they were like, oh, yeah, it was like the party car.
- 8:36And then the only other one was, and it was so cringey.
- 8:39There's two versions of it.
- 8:40Right now, they're playing the short version, the edited, you
- 8:42know, for radio version on TV.
- 8:44And it's the, the Haagen Dazs, not fast, not furious with
- 8:49Michelle Rodriguez and Vin Diesel.
- 8:51And in the long version, the Super Bowl version, Ludacris shows up.
- 8:54He's like, what are y'all doing?
- 8:55And it's like, it's so stupid.
- 8:58But, I got excited because that means it's sort of like, Hey, there's another
- 9:02movie coming, Fast and Furious 27 or whatever's coming out next, which
- 9:06I'm going to watch, regardless of the fact that it's not going to be good,
- 9:09but I'm going to watch it anyway.
- 9:11That's trash.
- 9:12Wait.
- 9:12So that, that's it, that's the Those were the big three.
- 9:15Those were, that was it.
- 9:16You're forgetting one!
- 9:17What, the one where the lady drives backwards in the Kia down the off ramp?
- 9:21I mean, that was dumb.
- 9:21No, but that had nothing to do with cars, actually.
- 9:24That was like a TurboTax commercial, I think.
- 9:26Stupid!
- 9:26No!
- 9:27Did you not see the Ram truck one?
- 9:29Which one was that one?
- 9:30With Glenn Powell?
- 9:31Oh, I see Goldilocks and the three trucks.
- 9:33Yeah, he was like three different versions of himself and three different Ram trucks.
- 9:37Yeah, yeah, I remember that one, yeah.
- 9:39I mean, it was Glenn Powell.
- 9:40Yet another Stellantis.
- 9:43Marketing effort, at least it's not imported from Detroit.
- 9:46That's true.
- 9:47But again, compared to previous years where the car commercials are usually
- 9:50pretty epic, like Audi does something or Nissan with a 400 Z all the ones
- 9:54that we've talked about in the past this year, it just felt kind of like
- 9:57wah, wah, all Audi's money is going into trying to get a formula one.
- 10:01Yeah.
- 10:01Well, there weren't even any like Kia commercials.
- 10:03I thought.
- 10:04There were some pretty big Kia ones last year, too, like going through the
- 10:08snow and the mountain and all this crap.
- 10:10Yeah.
- 10:11Like the Telluride and stuff like that.
- 10:12I mean, honestly, in general, car commercial or not, all of
- 10:15the commercials were pretty lame.
- 10:19And to hear that, like, people were paid 8 million for the spots, I'm like, these
- 10:24weren't 8 million worthy commercials.
- 10:26I'm like, y'all got Taken.
- 10:29They spent all their money on the spots.
- 10:31They couldn't afford to have a good commercial.
- 10:33They could have funded a race team.
- 10:34There were no beer commercials, which was surprising.
- 10:37Was there any?
- 10:38I didn't see the Anheuser Busch horses and all that stuff that they normally do.
- 10:41There was one.
- 10:42Was there?
- 10:43You're right.
- 10:43There was one about the horse.
- 10:45It was a pony.
- 10:46It was a colt.
- 10:46It showed up on its own or something.
- 10:48Yeah, he was left behind when they were doing a delivery,
- 10:51but a keg fell off the wagon.
- 10:53Yeah.
- 10:53He took the keg all the way across.
- 10:55It was like a weird commercial where it was like, we're not doing this.
- 10:58This, this time.
- 10:59And then it was, it's like we did and it was with the pony or something.
- 11:03Whatever.
- 11:03All right.
- 11:04Let's talk about the other Superbowl, the Superbowl of racing, the Rolex 24
- 11:08hours, kicking off the racing season.
- 11:10Always in style.
- 11:12Who won?
- 11:13Couldn't tell you.
- 11:13Didn't watch a minute of it.
- 11:15I have no idea.
- 11:15Well, there you go.
- 11:16The most entertaining part of that race was the point by Eric
- 11:19knows what I'm talking about.
- 11:20I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 11:22I have seen the photos of that.
- 11:24Please explain the genesis of that moment.
- 11:27So there's two BMWs in a Corvette.
- 11:30One of the BMWs in front happens to be a back marker and he pulls some like
- 11:36Fernando Alonso move blocking the Corvette so that the other BMW can get around them.
- 11:42And the Corvette, I think it was Tommy Milner.
- 11:44Was driving the Corvette.
- 11:45He was so mad at this BMW guy.
- 11:49First of all, he ran into the other BMW when he was trying to pass.
- 11:53And then when he got up next to the guy who was blocking him, he gave
- 11:57him a nice, friendly wave, a single finger salute, the way we all do point
- 12:02buys when we're on track together.
- 12:04I mean, I've given Eric that point by before too.
- 12:07So we all, we all get it.
- 12:08He was very upset and he gave the, he gave the salute.
- 12:11Then went about his way and blip shift, turned it into a t shirt.
- 12:15You know, there's memes about it.
- 12:16It was awesome.
- 12:18It's probably the most epic thing that's happened at Rolex this year.
- 12:22Are there no repercussions in the world?
- 12:24Oh, you got to find like 10 grand or something.
- 12:26I'm sure who cares if he gets any proceeds from the sales of anything.
- 12:31I mean, it's worth it.
- 12:32It's Pratt and Miller.
- 12:33I mean, they're running the Corvette program.
- 12:35I mean, they always have been.
- 12:36So, I mean, is anybody going to stand in their way, Matt?
- 12:40It was awesome.
- 12:41It was awesome.
- 12:42But if it was Max Verstappen, he'd have been fine.
- 12:46So to Tanya's point, who won?
- 12:47Who cares?
- 12:48Why don't we talk about torque sensors?
- 12:50Cause that's all they talked about for the first like six hours of the
- 12:52race is these freaking torque sensors.
- 12:55And I'm like, ah, another nanny.
- 12:58Half baked, half implemented, and then you got Mercedes coming late
- 13:02to the game, going torque centered?
- 13:04Wait a minute.
- 13:05What's that?
- 13:05Mercedes?
- 13:06Who's Mercedes?
- 13:07Did we talk about them on this show?
- 13:08Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:09We'll get more into that as we go along here.
- 13:11But let me give you the rundown, alright?
- 13:13So, GTP, which is LMP1, if you're of our generation.
- 13:17So the LMP cars, it was Porsche, Acura, Porsche.
- 13:201, 2, 3, boom, boom, boom.
- 13:21That's how it finished.
- 13:22LMP2.
- 13:24Who cares?
- 13:24It's a spec race.
- 13:25Setboarding, one, yay.
- 13:28And then GTD Pro.
- 13:30This is where the action is.
- 13:31So despite the single finger salute and all the Corvette stuff, and
- 13:34now GM is backing Pratt Miller and the privateers, so there's more
- 13:39Corvettes on track than there's ever been, which is absolutely epic.
- 13:42And Mustang comes out and says, Oh, my beer Corvette.
- 13:47They took them to town.
- 13:48And it was awesome that finally, I guess they got the balance of power, right?
- 13:51Because the Mustang in previous season was terrible.
- 13:54It was slow.
- 13:55And it was just, but you could tell the Mustang had the legs on
- 13:59the vet. And I was like, that's a front engine V8 going back at it.
- 14:03Like the old school days and Corvette sitting here.
- 14:05I got space age, mid engine, blah, blah, blah.
- 14:08It's like, yeah.
- 14:08Okay.
- 14:09Have a nice day.
- 14:10And what is it?
- 14:10Flat plane, crank, flat plane, crank.
- 14:12Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:13All that nonsense.
- 14:14So I am super proud for Ford.
- 14:16And then that wasn't enough.
- 14:17They got done kicking button GTD pro.
- 14:19And then they said, it's what we're coming back to Lamar.
- 14:23With an LMP GTP car, the highest level of racing and the biggest race of the
- 14:28year boards coming out with a prototype.
- 14:30We're going back GT 40 days.
- 14:32They haven't done stuff like that.
- 14:34You know what I mean?
- 14:34Racing in the biggest class that's out there.
- 14:36I feel like they're like a sleeping giant.
- 14:39A hundred percent.
- 14:40And like Ferrari has been on top the last couple of years, right?
- 14:42Didn't they win last year or they won the year before.
- 14:44I feel like Ford just like sits in the wings and they got this shit developed
- 14:48already and they're just ready to go.
- 14:50They're sitting there, they're sleeping, you know, they're making
- 14:53money over here and doing this and Ferrari, they do their own thing.
- 14:57Then Ferrari puts the car out and Ferrari starts winning and
- 15:00Ford's like, nah, not on my watch.
- 15:02They go out, they kick Ferrari's ass and then they shut it down again.
- 15:06Yep.
- 15:06Another 50 years will go by Ferrari.
- 15:08He'll come out with a car for Ari.
- 15:11He'll be on top again.
- 15:12I'm waiting for Ford to put out an F1 car.
- 15:15They're waiting for Ferrari to win an F1 championship.
- 15:18I guarantee you Ferrari wins an F1 championship board, not Cadillac.
- 15:22Ford is going to be the American team and they're going to wipe the floor with them.
- 15:26A hundred percent.
- 15:26I agree with that wholeheartedly.
- 15:28That's awesome.
- 15:30Well, I'm super proud of Ford.
- 15:32I'm really excited to have another brand that's coming to the big stage to compete
- 15:37against Porsche and Ferrari and Peugeot and BMW and all the big cars that are now
- 15:42showing up year after year at Le Mans.
- 15:45I'm like, this is great.
- 15:46And I said it two years ago now, Toyota.
- 15:48It was theirs to lose and they keep campaigning the same car.
- 15:52It's like, guys, evolve or die.
- 15:54And at this point you're dead.
- 15:55Like I'd be surprised if Toyota doesn't pack it up because of their move to
- 15:59formula one, they can't run both WEC and formula one at the same time.
- 16:04So they're going to have to pick that battle.
- 16:05But it's again, if Toyota stepping down and Ford can move in, that's
- 16:09going to be pretty awesome.
- 16:10So pretty excited about that.
- 16:11And then obviously there's one more class in the series and that's
- 16:15GTD AM, which is the amateurs.
- 16:17And I'm like, Do these guys even count?
- 16:20I didn't even really pay attention.
- 16:21There's usually some good racing in there too.
- 16:23Especially when like in prior years where GTD pro got kind of boring.
- 16:27Yeah.
- 16:28Oh, because in GTDM that's where like the iron dames run and like some of the
- 16:32other pretty cool, like small teams.
- 16:34If you go to an IMSA race, these are the people that are usually pretty
- 16:38outgoing and pretty like friendly with fans and taking pictures and
- 16:42just doing the marketing thing.
- 16:43So there's some cool people driving around in GTD AM.
- 16:47Speaking of, did you guys catch this year's pace car?
- 16:49Nope.
- 16:50No, I didn't watch him into the race.
- 16:51Oh, well you can go look it up.
- 16:532025 Rolex pace car.
- 16:55I thought it was an SUV because seeing it amongst the race cars,
- 17:00you're like, what the hell is that?
- 17:02And so they kept saying, Oh, the Acura pace car, the Acura pace car.
- 17:07It was exactly that.
- 17:08It was the new Integra.
- 17:10And it is huge.
- 17:13You know, it's big.
- 17:14But then when you put it with the race cars, it is massive.
- 17:18Like I really thought it was the new MDX.
- 17:21It's so big.
- 17:22And it was this really goofy gold Rolex color or whatever.
- 17:25So it made it look even bigger and reflective and all this kind of like,
- 17:29Oh man, Acura, what are you doing?
- 17:31I think it must've been an optical illusion.
- 17:34No, go look.
- 17:35It's no, because I've been on the road with one of them and it.
- 17:38Doesn't look like an SUV.
- 17:39I mean, it looks like a Honda, but it doesn't seem like an SUV.
- 17:42With the race cars.
- 17:43It was just like, it's a school bus.
- 17:45Everything looks bigger next to a race car, especially the BMW M8s.
- 17:48Remember those?
- 17:49I look like an SUV when I'm standing next to a race car.
- 17:53Well, that said, that was short, sweet, and to the point.
- 17:56So we need to get back to our regularly scheduled ranting and raving.
- 17:59And Brad, you made a comment last month, threw some shade my way.
- 18:03You called me out for good reason.
- 18:06For good reason said we never ever talk about BMW and Mercedes.
- 18:11It's sort of like Ford 50 years goes by before we talk about them again,
- 18:1550 years before they're relevant.
- 18:17So since you threw the gauntlet down and challenged us to find something.
- 18:22Interesting to talk about with respect to Mercedes and or BMW.
- 18:26Guess what?
- 18:27LFGO baby.
- 18:28That's all we're going to talk about.
- 18:29We are going to talk about Mercedes BMW for the next hour.
- 18:33That's it.
- 18:34So get ready, buckle up, buddy.
- 18:35I'm here for it.
- 18:36Let's do it.
- 18:37This is the wiener schnitzel celebration.
- 18:40This is the super bratwurst special.
- 18:42This is everything lower Saxony you can think of.
- 18:46Bimmers and bends.
- 18:47Here we go.
- 18:48You ready?
- 18:49Before we start, you'll have to make sure you tell me the metrics
- 18:51of this episode and how many people tune out at this point.
- 18:55Exactly.
- 18:56Exactly.
- 18:56So we're going to go through our segments.
- 18:58So here we go.
- 18:59VW Porsche Audi news.
- 19:01Nope.
- 19:02Bye Felicia.
- 19:03So meanwhile, get this.
- 19:05You know, I am a member of the Long Roof Society.
- 19:08I love me a good station wagon.
- 19:11And I have always said, and I will admit, BMW station wagons are notorious
- 19:17for being extremely good looking.
- 19:20They know how to build a wagon.
- 19:21And this latest one The M3 CS Touring has been spied at the
- 19:26Nürburgring, as one does in Germany.
- 19:29That's where you go to show off your wares.
- 19:30It's sort of like the jewelry district in Florence, right?
- 19:33It's the ultimate family hauler that we won't get.
- 19:37You wonder why we don't talk about BMW, they do shit like this.
- 19:40I was just about to say it's because they don't sell the cool
- 19:43shit here in the, in the States.
- 19:45Yeah, we get the crap.
- 19:46550 hrsprs and tons and tons of carbon fiber and big wheels and flares.
- 19:52And it wants to be an Audi RS6 Avant and it's not.
- 19:55And it's got that little round bell on it.
- 19:56It's a BMW.
- 19:58It does all the right things.
- 19:59It checks all the right boxes.
- 20:01And they're only going to make 2000 of them that we're never going to get.
- 20:03So who cares?
- 20:05Is it coming in a manual?
- 20:07BMW flip flops on that quite a bit.
- 20:09They do!
- 20:09They say, We're never making manuals again.
- 20:11And then they say, Oh, just kidding.
- 20:12And then they say, We're going to be the last ones with a manual on the planet.
- 20:15Everybody else is going to stop making.
- 20:16We're still going to have them.
- 20:17And then they brought manuals back for a while.
- 20:20And then I think they're gone again.
- 20:21They're doing the hokey pokey on the manual thing.
- 20:23I would assume a car like this.
- 20:26If they want to beat Audi, the RS6 Avant is freaking amazing, but that's
- 20:30flappy paddle gearbox and all that crazy stuff that it's got going on.
- 20:34This should, I'm not going to say is, it should come with a six speed
- 20:39manual because then everybody's going to go in that direction.
- 20:41And to add to that, since we skipped over Porsche, Porsche
- 20:44has said the 911 will continue to come with a manual transmission.
- 20:47They've seen the light.
- 20:49Aha!
- 20:50Enthusiasts want manuals!
- 20:52They don't care if the car shifts in 2 milliseconds!
- 20:56It's useless on the street.
- 20:57You want to have that connection to your car, that visceral experience.
- 21:01You want to be part of the fun.
- 21:03If the computer does everything, it's a freaking Johnny Cab.
- 21:06Like, who cares?
- 21:06So, further down in the article, they do say that the next M3
- 21:11Touring might make it to America.
- 21:13But what they're trying to do is see how well the M5 Touring does first.
- 21:17Why does that matter?
- 21:18So tell me about the M5 Touring.
- 21:20That's what I want to know.
- 21:22And so the M3 Touring is out of my grasp.
- 21:24The M5 Touring is so far out of my grasp.
- 21:27I shouldn't even be talking about it, but yet here we are.
- 21:30Well, not only that.
- 21:31And in the old days, like when the E36 E39 platform was out, what's the difference
- 21:35between 39 about three inches outside of the outward sheet metal looking different.
- 21:41But realistically in terms of like leg room, it wasn't any much of a bigger car.
- 21:46Yeah, it was a bigger motor.
- 21:48Yeah, bigger motor.
- 21:48That's for sure.
- 21:49A lot bigger motor.
- 21:50Comes with some whiz bang stuff.
- 21:51But yeah, to your point, this is going to be a hundred thousand
- 21:54dollar car on a three series.
- 21:56Easily.
- 21:57It's going to be 120.
- 21:59Or so I think nowadays you can get a BMW CS like an M3 CS non touring.
- 22:04Obviously here in the States, they're like upwards of a hundred,
- 22:07hundred and 510 optioned out because they've got 15 million
- 22:11different option packages for BMWs.
- 22:13Do they include different size kidney grills or we'll get into
- 22:15that too, but different size wheels.
- 22:17They've got the cold weather package.
- 22:20Start package, the tickle your butthole package.
- 22:23I mean, they've got all that.
- 22:23That only comes in the Teslas, but we're not talking about them this month.
- 22:26You know, sure.
- 22:27Yeah.
- 22:27We're not Tesla doesn't exist in this episode.
- 22:29So Mercedes, oh, Mercedes.
- 22:32I want to remind our audience.
- 22:34They literally invented the car.
- 22:36Mercedes Benz is the oldest car company in the world.
- 22:41And they build some of the most boring stuff you have ever put your eyes on.
- 22:47Right.
- 22:47It's just like.
- 22:49So hot news this month, 2026, the E class is going to get a stretch version, be a
- 22:56limousine, because limousines are cool.
- 22:58No one said ever.
- 23:00Limousines stopped being cool in the 80s.
- 23:02Why do we still make limos?
- 23:04Because there's a lot of rich people.
- 23:06That's still riding them.
- 23:07Well, don't they ride in my box though?
- 23:09That's just it.
- 23:10Like what's the point?
- 23:11Well, this isn't Mercedes making it though.
- 23:14Oh, it's awful.
- 23:14This is an aftermarket company though.
- 23:16That's making this still Mercedes related.
- 23:19It is.
- 23:19Yeah, but it's not Mercedes themself doing it.
- 23:21They're not choosing it.
- 23:22Yeah.
- 23:22But look at the E class that it starts with.
- 23:24It's a boring, ugly saloon.
- 23:26It is.
- 23:27It's a taxi cab.
- 23:28It's a German taxi cab.
- 23:29It's awful.
- 23:30That's supposed to get me excited about Mercedes?
- 23:33No, but this isn't sanctioned by Mercedes.
- 23:35No, I'm talking about the E Class.
- 23:37Just look at the E Class that it's based on.
- 23:39That is a boring car.
- 23:40It's a Crown Vic.
- 23:42Yeah, who buys that?
- 23:43People that think they're getting something special
- 23:45when they buy a Mercedes, but they can't afford an S Class.
- 23:47That's enough of that.
- 23:48Yeah, exactly.
- 23:49That's all we need to say about that.
- 23:50Next hotness.
- 23:51The BMW iX has gotten a facelift.
- 23:55I've never seen one on the road to begin with, so I didn't
- 23:57know what it looked like.
- 23:58I think I've seen a couple of these.
- 24:00I see a lot of weird shit down here.
- 24:02This is why we don't talk about BMWs.
- 24:05Did Black and Decker design this?
- 24:06Like, this should have like a handle on it and just be an appliance.
- 24:10You know, what kills me about these designs?
- 24:13I noticed the other day, I was looking at an older car on the road.
- 24:15And you remember how, when we were younger, you used to salivate over,
- 24:19man, I'm going to get fenders on my car.
- 24:21I'm going to stretch my fenders.
- 24:22And you know, even the cars in the two thousands, like the Mark four
- 24:24Volkswagen, you had those lips that went over the wheels, those lip fenders.
- 24:28Now all the cars look like they were cut with a putty knife.
- 24:32Somebody was doing joint compound on the wall.
- 24:34All the fenders are like squared off.
- 24:36It looks weird and it's really obvious and it's become really annoying that
- 24:40every car is sort of the same now.
- 24:43And there's no definition to it.
- 24:45And that's where that M3 Touring and the RS6 Six because they actually
- 24:48have hips and they have a shape to them, jackknife flares and all.
- 24:52And you're like, Oh, that looks really cool because it's so
- 24:55different than all this other Tamagotchi stuff we're looking at.
- 24:59Those flattened off fenders are the basic white girl of the car industry.
- 25:02This is so vanilla latte at Starbucks.
- 25:05These are all pumpkin spice, pumpkin spice and hugs.
- 25:09And that grill.
- 25:10Is that the biggest one yet?
- 25:11That might be bigger than the X7.
- 25:13The problem I have Oh, here we go.
- 25:15is with the new BMWs, or what they're doing now, what they've done over
- 25:20the last, I don't know, however many years, there is something iconic about
- 25:24the way the front of a BMW looks.
- 25:27Notably, their headlights.
- 25:29The double round headlights.
- 25:31are quintessentially BMW recognized easily if all you saw
- 25:36were the headlights you go BMW.
- 25:38Whatever the hell is on that thing, whose headlights are those?
- 25:41And they've slowly been morphing away in terms of, they've made
- 25:46them a little bit more geometric, but they have kept the double.
- 25:49So there's still that, but there's some newer models that are going
- 25:52to this, just this like light bar.
- 25:55The kidney grill is the other well known BMW trait, right, when they've
- 25:59ruined that, and now they're ruining the headlights, and it's like,
- 26:03well, what do you have anymore?
- 26:04I think it's a perfect metaphor, talking about the weird shape of the kidneys
- 26:09now, and the headlights, like BMW, it's like they're losing their identity.
- 26:12BMW has lost its identity of what it used to be.
- 26:16Like even back to like the early two thousands, the Bengal period.
- 26:19Yeah, it was, they have lost their way.
- 26:21They've lost their identity.
- 26:22I think the turning point for BMW was after the Bengal period when Chris
- 26:26Bengal left, and then we got all the like proliferation of BMW models where it was.
- 26:31Like an ask for every seat, basically there was a design for everybody.
- 26:35You want the four, you want the four GT, you want the four long.
- 26:39Oh, you want the three, the five, the seven, the 10, like they had all these
- 26:43variants and then the sport back and then the hatchback and then the X one.
- 26:47And it's like, ah, they were at their best when they had the three series, like
- 26:51in the U S I know they had other series.
- 26:53They had other series over in Europe, I get it, but in the U. S. when they
- 26:57had the 3 series, the 5 series, and the 7 series, to a smaller degree when
- 27:02they came out with the first X5, I think that was their perfect period.
- 27:06That was, I wanted a BMW so bad then.
- 27:09And then they came out with the weird, let's talk about the six 50, right?
- 27:13With that rear end.
- 27:14It looks like a badger.
- 27:15Yeah, that originally came on the seven series, like the seven 45 before
- 27:19they brought the six series out.
- 27:21Now I know like before my time, they had the six series before
- 27:24they had the eight series.
- 27:25I used to want an eight 50 CSI.
- 27:27So bad scoured the internet trying to buy.
- 27:32You know, I never had the money, of course, because I was poor, but
- 27:35I know that those cars came out.
- 27:36But like when I was growing up and I was becoming an enthusiast,
- 27:39three series, five series, seven series and the X, that was it.
- 27:43And that was all they needed.
- 27:44They were killing it.
- 27:45I feel then.
- 27:46And they lost their way.
- 27:47And Mercedes did the exact same thing.
- 27:50And Audi too.
- 27:51All three of them like started doing the same shit.
- 27:53They went full GM.
- 27:54Like you never go full GM.
- 27:57And Ford lurking in the background, waiting to pounce.
- 28:00Ford is waiting for Ferrari to win something so they can
- 28:03come and kick their ass again.
- 28:04You know, to Tanya's point about the designs are morphing, and you
- 28:09mentioned it, the new M5 is coming.
- 28:11Look at these spy photos of the new M5.
- 28:13This is the ugliest BMW to date.
- 28:16This is even uglier than the 7 Series.
- 28:18With the triple headlights.
- 28:19Remember that one?
- 28:20If you slapped a Dacia badge on this, I'd believe you.
- 28:23Or a Skoda badge.
- 28:24Sure.
- 28:25It looks like something that is from Eurasia that we would
- 28:29never get here in the States.
- 28:31I don't know what that is.
- 28:32It's a Honda, I think.
- 28:33All right.
- 28:34Let's move on to our next alien, which would normally be Stellantis.
- 28:38And in the old days.
- 28:39Before it was Stellantis, it was Daimler Benz, Chrysler, right?
- 28:43Well, all that stuff was 20 years ago, so we got nothing to talk about there.
- 28:46So we're going to move on to domestic news.
- 28:48And the reason it's domestic news is the headline reads,
- 28:52BMW will keep the V8 engine.
- 28:55Because Americans love it.
- 28:56Yeah, love a good VA. Yeah.
- 29:00I mean, I have no problem with this.
- 29:02That's perfectly fine.
- 29:03Give me all the V8, all the power.
- 29:05Give me all the sounds.
- 29:06Just amazing.
- 29:07Since we're talking about BMW and Mercedes, which sounds better?
- 29:11BMW V8 or AMG V8?
- 29:13Oh, AMG.
- 29:131 million percent, hands down.
- 29:15Not even a contest.
- 29:16Yes, just the AMG sounds like it's literally trying to destroy the world.
- 29:21It's trying to rip the pavement apart underneath it.
- 29:25That's how AMG V8 sounds.
- 29:27I will never forget that Rolex where you and I stayed up all night and
- 29:31you could just feel the bends coming around the bowl in your chest.
- 29:35It was awesome.
- 29:36There awesome.
- 29:38Oh God, that was absolute ground pounder.
- 29:40That's the way the C7R sounded too.
- 29:42I mean, it was just.
- 29:43Earth shattering.
- 29:44It's trying to rip the world apart.
- 29:46I love it.
- 29:46Let's put a turbo four in the next M3.
- 29:49I think that's the way to go.
- 29:50Oh god.
- 29:52Tanya gave us some news here.
- 29:54It looks like BMW is not the only one that's going to be focusing
- 29:57on keeping big motors around.
- 29:58You know, apparently Mercedes AMG Is cooking up a next gen V8 engine.
- 30:04And we don't fully know what that means yet.
- 30:06Cause they say an electrified V8 is that a plug in hybrid?
- 30:10Is that self charging hybrid?
- 30:12What are we talking about here?
- 30:13But there's going to be some sort of new V8 coming.
- 30:16I'm guessing hybrid, like a performance hybrid.
- 30:18Cause didn't Porsche come out with like a performance hybrid or something.
- 30:21But both Honda and Audi.
- 30:23Developed an electric turbo as well.
- 30:25So that's an option too.
- 30:27Yeah, I don't think they're just going to slap a tornado on it.
- 30:31That's what they're going to say.
- 30:34Compressor with the K on the compressor.
- 30:37Yes.
- 30:37All right.
- 30:38Well, good on Mercedes.
- 30:39I think Mercedes is going to be one of those.
- 30:42Sort of like Chrysler where the V8 will never really go away for them because
- 30:47it is a staple for both of those brands.
- 30:50Yeah, but so is the diesel.
- 30:52The Mercedes and diesel was like, you know, didn't Rudolph
- 30:54diesel work for Mercedes or something like that at one point?
- 30:57I think that's where he might've invented it or something.
- 30:59Now you're above my pay grade.
- 31:00I gotta go back in my history books to remember that because
- 31:03like Porsche old man, Ferdinand Porsche, not fairy, his son.
- 31:07He worked for Mercedes as well.
- 31:08Back in the days of like the silver arrows, he was part of that
- 31:11whole racing pedigree that they started 120 years ago in Germany.
- 31:16I want to, I want to say it's a small country.
- 31:17It's, it's sort of a incestuous world in the auto making space.
- 31:21So there's a lot of crossover there.
- 31:23Not that we're talking about these brands, but kind of the same in Italy too, but
- 31:26it's like the opposite, the inverse.
- 31:28Ferrari didn't want to hire a tractor maker.
- 31:30So Lamborghini made his own car and then Lamborghini didn't want to hire somebody.
- 31:34So Pagani made his own car.
- 31:36And it's like, it's like the opposite of what you're describing, where
- 31:38they all worked together in Germany for the greater good, you know,
- 31:41for those that we won't talk about in, in Italy, it's the opposite.
- 31:44They're like, no, no, no, no.
- 31:45You're not good enough for us.
- 31:46You can't come work with me.
- 31:47To hell with you.
- 31:48I'll prove you wrong.
- 31:49I make my own car.
- 31:50Yeah.
- 31:50And then at the end of the day, Fiat owns everything.
- 31:52So it's like, whatever.
- 31:53Yeah, exactly.
- 31:55Fiat owns them all.
- 31:55Well, moving along to Japanese domestic and Asian car news.
- 31:59What the hell does that have to do with BMW and Mercedes?
- 32:02Two things.
- 32:03As a matter of fact, BYD is beating out Mercedes in Chinese sales because Mercedes
- 32:08was one of those brands that had always had a strong foothold in East Asia.
- 32:13And so now BYD is taking sales away from them and from BMW as well.
- 32:18So that's pretty interesting because that's a hot new brand.
- 32:21Taken down the big dogs.
- 32:22I've actually never heard of BYD.
- 32:24I mean, I'm not surprised.
- 32:25I'm a stupid American.
- 32:26Where have you been?
- 32:28Oh, we've talked about them before.
- 32:29Yeah.
- 32:29We probably have.
- 32:30I go to sleep during the episodes.
- 32:32I take micro naps.
- 32:33With his eyes open.
- 32:34It's like clockwork orange.
- 32:35God, your hair.
- 32:39That should be the podcast cover.
- 32:42It's just you and your hair, some eye makeup.
- 32:44We need Jess to help you out with some eye makeup.
- 32:47If I recall correctly, he was recently offered a haircut, but declined.
- 32:51Did, I'm growing it out.
- 32:52It's all good.
- 32:53I cut it in April.
- 32:54You're so dreamy.
- 32:57Meanwhile, we thought the Supra was going to be the only crossover.
- 33:01Between BMW and Toyota.
- 33:03Well, guess what?
- 33:03You were wrong.
- 33:04No, I don't think we ever thought it was.
- 33:06I thought they were like establishing a relationship,
- 33:08like a long term relationship.
- 33:09It's like this weird on again, off again, dating thing that BMW and Toyota have,
- 33:14but they're getting together again, because they're really the only two auto
- 33:18manufacturers outside of like Ligier that is doing any sort of research into
- 33:23hydrogen for the commercial market.
- 33:25So BMW a SUV, a new next generation X5 together that it's going to be
- 33:32hydrogen powered or whatever it is.
- 33:35So I thought that was kind of interesting.
- 33:37Didn't Chevy do a lot with hydrogen power back in like the early 2000s?
- 33:41Weren't they trying to do that too?
- 33:42They tried propane.
- 33:43They had that weird flex fuel Tahoe thing that didn't work out.
- 33:47Remember that?
- 33:47They tried coal in the back of a pickup truck.
- 33:50Steam engine.
- 33:51And then they bought into Nikola and that went under.
- 33:54No, that's going under now, right?
- 33:56Isn't that what the news is?
- 33:58Yes, apparently they're filing for bankruptcy.
- 34:00However, I thought they already were filed for bankruptcy, so I'm
- 34:03slightly confused by this headline.
- 34:06That's like, whatever, moving on.
- 34:08Interesting though, BMW and Toyota are not the only hydrogen developers
- 34:12because Hyundai has been quietly sort of a big player in the hydrogen
- 34:17fuel cell arena for some time now.
- 34:20So it's interesting, I guess, that there's no partnership with them.
- 34:22I will say Hyundai is the dark horse that everybody should be paying attention to.
- 34:28Because I think.
- 34:29They are going to slowly eclipse a lot of other brands that we're
- 34:33used to being enthusiastic about.
- 34:35I've said it before, you're looking for that GTI experience.
- 34:38Where do you go?
- 34:39You don't go to Volkswagen anymore because the new mark, whatever the hell it is.
- 34:42Golf is the size of a Tiguan.
- 34:44You go to Hyundai.
- 34:45And remember that our gorgeous never to see the light of day.
- 34:51Envision 74.
- 34:52Oh my.
- 34:53God is actually hydrogen.
- 34:55Now that's right.
- 34:56You're right.
- 34:57They did do that.
- 34:58I thought it was electric.
- 34:58It's boogie.
- 34:59Okay.
- 35:00My only grape or my only criticism of what you're saying about Hyundai
- 35:04kind of eclipsing, and especially in the enthusiast side of the house.
- 35:08Any Hyundai I've ever driven, they put up great numbers on paper, but
- 35:12they do not feel good to drive.
- 35:14And I've driven a few.
- 35:15I've never had a good experience driving a Hyundai.
- 35:18I was not impressed by my rental Sonata.
- 35:21They have to have an N badge.
- 35:22I recall it had this Allegedly weird eco mode.
- 35:26I think I was in Arizona and I swear to God that I got worse mileage in the eco
- 35:33mode than just leaving it in regular.
- 35:38Was it 120 degrees?
- 35:40No, it was actually quite chilly where I, where I was, but.
- 35:4495. All right, we have another section and I wanted to see if we could fill that.
- 35:51Sometimes, sometimes.
- 35:53We talk about two wheeled vehicles.
- 35:55We talk about bikes and BMW to make a bikes since bikes were new.
- 36:00And I couldn't find anything.
- 36:02There is nothing exciting going on on that side of the world.
- 36:05So that was pretty sad.
- 36:06One of their motorcycles is like one of the fastest bikes out right
- 36:10now, but it didn't hit the news.
- 36:12It didn't make the news because it's been around for a couple of years now.
- 36:15So you're, I guess you're right.
- 36:16It's got to be newsworthy, really newsworthy.
- 36:19Now we need to step into EVs and concepts, which is Tanya's territory.
- 36:22And I'm going to take this one, Tanya, because van life and Mercedes.
- 36:27So we all know how exciting the mattress is.
- 36:30You know, we're all going to really miss.
- 36:32It's that bread box and it's not to be confused with the Ram van, right?
- 36:35That we have here, this printer, all of these really, really
- 36:39exciting Mercedes products.
- 36:40No, no.
- 36:41You remember the R class?
- 36:42Do you remember that abomination that Mercedes made that was like a
- 36:45truck slash SUV slash station wagon?
- 36:48Thing that nobody understood.
- 36:50You mean the minivan?
- 36:51That thing was ugly.
- 36:52It was like a routine.
- 36:53It was horrible.
- 36:53They put a V8 in it.
- 36:55You could get an AMG version.
- 36:57That doesn't make it better.
- 36:58Yes, it does.
- 36:59That wakes a hundred cent better.
- 37:01It's like a Hellcat.
- 37:02It's like a Hellcat minivan.
- 37:03A Hellcat town and country.
- 37:05It's more like a cat that you stepped on its tail.
- 37:07That's what it is.
- 37:08Hey, this is not a Hellcat.
- 37:11It's a screamy cat.
- 37:12All right.
- 37:12So Mercedes decided get rid of the mattress.
- 37:14You're not the R class anymore.
- 37:16We need a van.
- 37:17Introducing.
- 37:18The V Class!
- 37:19It's an all electric minivan that's just like the ID Buzz,
- 37:22but doesn't have any fun at all.
- 37:25This has to be the most boring thing I've ever seen.
- 37:28Oh, before you move on, I actually saw an ID Buzz.
- 37:33I know we're not talking about Volkswagen.
- 37:35I saw an ID buzz on the road the other day in my area with the white roof.
- 37:40Did you like it?
- 37:41It was bigger than I expected it to be.
- 37:43So everybody says it did not look like 60, 000 though.
- 37:46It looked like 35, 000.
- 37:48That's what I keep saying, but Hey, whatever.
- 37:50But this one wrapped in, in wrapping paper looks pretty cool though.
- 37:54That reminded me of the Plymouth truck.
- 37:56It's missing a big red bow.
- 37:58This is the kind of crap that Mercedes is making to your point.
- 38:01German taxi cabs.
- 38:02Because where are we going to see this?
- 38:03It's going to have a lot of tons of livery on it and it's going to be moving
- 38:06people around Frankfurt airport because what else would you use this for?
- 38:10I swear if it was a different color, I'm seeing the vans from demolition man,
- 38:15murder, death, kill, murder, death, kill.
- 38:17All right, Tanya.
- 38:18Well, we've got some other exciting EV and concept news.
- 38:21Exciting?
- 38:22It's Tesla related.
- 38:23We can't talk about Tesla in this episode, but it's sort of Tesla adjacent.
- 38:27I love that.
- 38:28What are we talking about?
- 38:28Well, it says here that the new BMW i5 that we were talking about earlier, it
- 38:33has been spotted with a native NAX port.
- 38:36This could be the first brand to adopt the Maxport, which
- 38:41is the Tesla charging thing.
- 38:42That's not true.
- 38:43I thought somebody else already did.
- 38:45That's right.
- 38:46Lucid was first to market on that one, which I think is interesting
- 38:50because Lucid, to Brad's point about the Italians earlier, was
- 38:53literally people defecting from Tesla.
- 38:55Saying we can do better and go build our own tractor over there.
- 38:59And we'll call it lucid more than even lucid uses it because I
- 39:02thought Ford had already switched.
- 39:04No, I think they were all selling little adapters to go from the 1752 to the
- 39:09Max Porter or whatever, but Tesla's proprietary, not proprietary anymore,
- 39:13charging network, more brands are adopting so that you can use the charging network.
- 39:16Now there's no description in this.
- 39:19Well, okay, great.
- 39:20It's got the port.
- 39:21Now, how do I, as a BMW owner sign up for the Tesla charging network?
- 39:25It doesn't make any sense to me, or maybe they got a back convert.
- 39:28They'll go to a charge point, America, do a Tesla.
- 39:31And then like, you stupid, like trying to put diesel on your unleaded.
- 39:35Meanwhile, there's more dev and hydrogen options coming from BMW.
- 39:39This one's even uglier than the last one.
- 39:42I think this is a render.
- 39:43What is it?
- 39:44So they went from the giant, giant kidney grills.
- 39:47To the smallest grills possible.
- 39:49Jelly beans.
- 39:50They took these grills apparently from a one series and slapped them
- 39:54on the front of this big ol SUV.
- 39:56That has to be photoshopped.
- 39:57It looks fake.
- 39:58And hey, you know, I was complaining about double headlights and, you
- 40:03know, there are two X's here.
- 40:04This looks like Skeletor.
- 40:06Like I'm waiting for He Man to rush out and kill this thing any minute.
- 40:09It looks like the masks from the movie The Purge.
- 40:12The light up masks that the killers wear, that's, that's what this is trying to be.
- 40:16Now that you say it's Skeletor's car, I like it a little bit better.
- 40:20If it was the blue of Skeletor, I think I would enjoy it much more.
- 40:23Like, and it's got a match, you know what I mean?
- 40:25Isn't Skeletor like purple and gray?
- 40:26Whatever.
- 40:27Is the dress black and blue or is it white and gold?
- 40:32That That about sums that up.
- 40:41All right.
- 40:43That debate is still raging.
- 40:44I don't know why.
- 40:46Raging debate.
- 40:47Speaking of raging debates, Brad, I found you a do doy moment.
- 40:51Just read the headline for us, please.
- 40:53BMW says big displays, quote, disconnect drivers from the road.
- 40:58No shit, who would have thought a TV screen in the middle of your dashboard
- 41:03would be anything but distracting.
- 41:05Watching Netflix, chilling while you're going down the road.
- 41:08Tesla's you can play video games on your screen.
- 41:10Yeah, cup man.
- 41:11Butt man.
- 41:12So when you look at the picture of this dashboard, please.
- 41:15Tell me that that steering wheel is not mounted upside down, you know,
- 41:20it looks like it's upside down.
- 41:22I don't understand any of this interior really ugly.
- 41:25And then it's got the Honda prelude.
- 41:26If you remember like Brian's prelude, the second gen, it's got the whole
- 41:30dash all the way across the windshield.
- 41:33Well, the next article, like if you read hyperlink BMW's panoramic eye drive brings
- 41:40pillar to pillar display to future models.
- 41:43But it eliminates knob, which everyone says they want to bring back.
- 41:47Yes.
- 41:47Well, the knob is the person behind the wheel.
- 41:50That person's a knob.
- 41:51They're talking physical knobs.
- 41:52I know.
- 41:53Did you notice there's an actual picture of what we think is the
- 41:56Photoshop Skeletor car it's further down in this article that looks like a
- 42:00real picture of this thing, but there are no X's, but yeah, there's no X.
- 42:05It looks like that Nissan Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:08You know what I'm talking about?
- 42:09The one from like Gran Turismo or something?
- 42:11The Nismo.
- 42:12It was like the Nismo something or other.
- 42:14Yeah, it was supposed to be the ID something or other.
- 42:18It had an ID name because it was supposed to be like the new Dotson
- 42:21510 or whatever, they never made it, but again, it looks like Skeletor.
- 42:25Is this a half steering wheel?
- 42:26Something is wrong with this.
- 42:28Okay, so if you click the pillar to pillar future models thing, it shows you
- 42:33the steering wheel sitting on a table.
- 42:34It's a half steering wheel.
- 42:36It's horrible.
- 42:36You are right.
- 42:37If you flipped it upside down, it looks like the bottom
- 42:39half of the steering wheel.
- 42:43Awful.
- 42:44All right, Brad, it's time we moved to your favorite section
- 42:47of the drive thru lost and found.
- 42:48Now, before we get into, cause we're having such an enlightening, uplifting.
- 42:53You wanted this.
- 42:54That's all I'm saying is you wanted this.
- 42:56You know, and I am thoroughly enjoying it.
- 42:58I'm having a lot of fun.
- 42:59Regretting it is what you mean.
- 43:00It was amazing.
- 43:02Website cars and bids that was founded by Doug DeMuro, the writer
- 43:08and journalist from what was it?
- 43:10Jalopnik layoffs, hit cars and bids is the enthusiast car
- 43:14market comes back down to earth.
- 43:15And because DeMuro cashed out, right?
- 43:18They took a significant investment, 37 million, but that's at the worst
- 43:23end of the market for car sales.
- 43:25I mean, used cars were going through the roof and now everything's
- 43:27kind of come back down to earth and people that have these cars.
- 43:31Are trying not to sell them.
- 43:33Fewer cars are selling for what they were selling were no reserve and
- 43:36they weren't meeting their reserve.
- 43:38It's, it's just tons of issues.
- 43:40Not a good look for the industry.
- 43:41Not a good look for cars and bids.
- 43:43Well, it should have never gone off the rails the way it did.
- 43:46Covid is what made the used car market go nuts because people were bored
- 43:50and we all had that stimulus money.
- 43:52We all had that stimulus money.
- 43:53That stimulus money.
- 43:54We couldn't go out and drink anymore.
- 43:55We were all spending our money on cards.
- 43:57Yeah, we're getting stimuli for all of 11 bucks.
- 43:59That we got from that after taxes stimulated stimulus.
- 44:03But this brings up a question, is something similar in the cards
- 44:07for sites like bring a trailer?
- 44:10I think so.
- 44:10I really do.
- 44:11I've been saying that for a while.
- 44:12Will we finally be able to see.
- 44:15And air cooled nine 11 sell for less than 50 gajillion dollars.
- 44:19I mean, if that happens, I might buy one.
- 44:21I thought about it actually, like a 76 to 85, like in the period where nobody
- 44:26really wants them three liter or 3.
- 44:292. And you're just sort of like, yeah, I'll do that.
- 44:31That wouldn't be too horrible.
- 44:32I'd love a cabrio.
- 44:329 11 without the top might be a lot of fun.
- 44:35I mean, it doesn't really lose a lot of structural rigidity.
- 44:38So that'd be kind of cool.
- 44:39I don't know if you saw California occasion.
- 44:41Yeah, I would go.
- 44:42I would go.
- 44:43Full just the black, dusty, dirty, broken headlight, nine 11 cabriolet.
- 44:47I would totally rock one, but we can't, we have to buy BMWs.
- 44:50We're talking about BMWs and Mercedes doesn't make any, well, if you bought
- 44:53a Mercedes convertible, it'd be that SL 55 from like 1988, the V 12 monstrosity.
- 45:00That is a money pit to maintain.
- 45:02Although they're gorgeous.
- 45:03No, you get the AMG SL 55, the V8 from like 2000, the later ones.
- 45:09Yeah.
- 45:10Were 2005.
- 45:11The one that they used to always put up against the Terminator Mustangs.
- 45:15Tanya would buy the Mercedes that they used in Magnum PI that Rick drove.
- 45:19Yeah, he had that silver one.
- 45:20The same one that the lady in Once Upon a Time had, right?
- 45:23Yes, that's right.
- 45:24Yes, I would totally buy one of those.
- 45:26Yeah, late 70s SL, that screams Tanya right there.
- 45:29Like 460 SL, like one of those, that'd be good.
- 45:31So circle back to what you were talking about, about how the market has softened.
- 45:35I found this.
- 45:36Particular 2016 M4 that we're about to talk about.
- 45:40It was on bring a trailer and it was picked up by car scoops because
- 45:43they were like, Oh my God, M4 GTS competition, blah, blah, blah.
- 45:47It only has 500 miles on it.
- 45:51Okay, great.
- 45:52I don't care.
- 45:52Here's the point.
- 45:53Brand new MSRP sticker off the lot before destination taxes, tags, fees,
- 45:58and all the other nonsense that goes with that 134, 000 for this BMW.
- 46:02It sold on bring a trailer.
- 46:05This is how soft the market is right now.
- 46:07Okay.
- 46:07It's still expensive, but it's sold on bring a trailer 95 grand.
- 46:11So whoever sold this car dealership privateer, they lost money.
- 46:1550 grand in the shorts easily.
- 46:18That's a sign of the times right there, folks.
- 46:20That's actually good.
- 46:22If the market softens enough, the depreciation is real.
- 46:25It always has been.
- 46:27You can get into some of these cars.
- 46:28Now, granted, am I going to run out and spend a hundred grand on a BMW.
- 46:31No, I'm not going to do that, but it's got scaffolding.
- 46:34It's got a lot of things Clarkson would call it scaffolding in the back.
- 46:37And I like these and I coached one of these at VIR.
- 46:40It was amazing.
- 46:41It is a very smart vehicle.
- 46:43It can do a lot of really cool things and it's very fast.
- 46:47It's not a hundred thousand dollars for me.
- 46:48There's a competition version, right?
- 46:50Yeah.
- 46:50I had one, I mean, granted, what I was driving, but when it passed me
- 46:56on Koda, it came out of the final turn at Koda onto the back straight.
- 47:00Holy crap.
- 47:01Oh yeah, afterburners.
- 47:03I already saw he was coming.
- 47:04I had my arm out the window before I even went to turn.
- 47:08Which way was your finger pointing?
- 47:11Up.
- 47:11I was just like, go around, like, I know you're coming.
- 47:15Just go.
- 47:15I don't care.
- 47:16He came up to me after when we were done the session.
- 47:19He was like, wow, thanks for like giving me the point so early.
- 47:22I was like, how was I going to slow you up?
- 47:25He was doing warp seven.
- 47:26He closed on me so fast.
- 47:28It was ridiculous.
- 47:29And that's part of the problem with some of these new cars.
- 47:32You know, we could devolve this into a conversation about coaching, which is not
- 47:35worth it, but The new cars are so good.
- 47:39They are so fast, but there's nothing quite like driving an old car fast.
- 47:44You know what I mean?
- 47:44That's just whatever it is.
- 47:45What's interesting is there to me are even more shocking is because
- 47:49this was a special edition car.
- 47:51They only made 700 worldwide and he still lost money on it.
- 47:54Like I would have expected him to sell it for double.
- 47:57Exactly.
- 47:57That's the shocking part.
- 47:59Since we're talking about markets and trends and buying and you know, where
- 48:03BMW and Mercedes are kicking butt.
- 48:06Maybe it's because this continent slash country, I joke and have joked
- 48:11that they're 20 years behind the time.
- 48:13And so they're just now crossing into the 2000s.
- 48:16And BMW and AMG are kicking ass in Australia right now.
- 48:19The sales are just ridiculous.
- 48:21That also could be a result of the fact that Holden is no more.
- 48:24So you can't buy a Commodore HSV plus GT, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 48:29Chevy SS, whatever you want to call it.
- 48:31Or a Holden Monaro, which is a GTO, all that kind of stuff.
- 48:34So what do you have left?
- 48:35If you want a ground pounding V8 sports saloon sedan, then I guess
- 48:40you buy an AMG or you buy a BMW.
- 48:42Cause you can't buy a Ford or a Holden anymore.
- 48:48C 63.
- 48:50I know I was trying to avoid that.
- 48:52So basically if you want a ground pounding V8 move to
- 48:55America, cause we like them V8s.
- 48:59Yeah.
- 48:59We like them V8s and BMW.
- 49:00You're going to keep bringing them here.
- 49:02Hoping you wouldn't pick up on the fact that that was the fact that
- 49:05spelled out the title of the article.
- 49:07Nope.
- 49:08I would, I would have missed it.
- 49:09I wouldn't have seen it.
- 49:09Mr. Ben's must be rolling over in his grave, like a drill at
- 49:14full tilt because four cylinder.
- 49:17AMG.
- 49:18I mean, seriously, I don't want to say those words in
- 49:21the sentence and I just did.
- 49:22And now I need to go wash my mouth out.
- 49:24It's like disgusting.
- 49:25I mean, we've talked about it before in other cars.
- 49:28I think it makes sense in the C Class.
- 49:32No!
- 49:32Because you can get a ton of power out of No, it's a bullshit cop out because
- 49:38everybody else went four cylinder turbo.
- 49:40So somehow Mercedes decided that they needed to do that too.
- 49:44That AMG should have had a 3.
- 49:462 liter naturally aspirated motor that they had in the earlier cars,
- 49:50which made close to 300 horsepower.
- 49:53And probably gets the same gas mileage as this stupid four cylinder.
- 49:56So here is where AMG and Mercedes screwed themselves for a while.
- 50:00They did have the 3.
- 50:022 liter compressor.
- 50:03Yes.
- 50:04The early two thousands.
- 50:05They screwed themselves when they put the V8 in those little cars,
- 50:10because it was not sustainable.
- 50:12And now they've got to go back to something that personally if that
- 50:15V8 never existed in those cars, this would be totally acceptable.
- 50:18But because that V8 existed in those cars, everybody's like, no, go
- 50:22back to the V8, go back to the V8.
- 50:23Where's the V8?
- 50:25Had it never been in those cars, you wouldn't care about this.
- 50:28You'd be like, okay, cool.
- 50:29How much power does it make?
- 50:30400 some odd horsepower?
- 50:31Great.
- 50:31Sounds awesome.
- 50:32Sign me up.
- 50:33I have said this before, after driving a CLK Black, It's really
- 50:37hard to say you want a Mercedes that doesn't come with a V8.
- 50:41I understand.
- 50:42And the 3.
- 50:432 is a compromise, but the 3.
- 50:442 was a good motor.
- 50:45They put it in a lot of stuff and including, ugh, the Chrysler Crossfire
- 50:49and some other garbage because they owned Chrysler at that point.
- 50:53Realistically, that 3.
- 50:552 is a good engine and I feel that it's a better solution
- 50:59than this four cylinder turbo.
- 51:00Like it's just ugh.
- 51:02And I've seen some of these A series.
- 51:04Mercedes as well.
- 51:05And it's like, you hear it before you see it.
- 51:08And you're like, Oh my God, is that a GTI?
- 51:10You know, it's got that, like all the four cylinders have now because
- 51:14they dump a little extra fuel and you get the little backfire.
- 51:17And if you like that, that's fine.
- 51:19The boy racer in me graduated a long time ago.
- 51:22And so there's no replacement for displacement sometimes, especially
- 51:26in some of these cars where you're paying this kind of money.
- 51:28Like that's the other thing.
- 51:29AMG C 63, you're going to pay 60, 70, 000.
- 51:34And you get a four cylinder like really, but it's got a turbo and it's hybrid.
- 51:40Keep all that crap.
- 51:40I don't care.
- 51:41So here's my problem.
- 51:42It's 190, 000 and it's got a four cylinder.
- 51:45Well, it's a, it's 190, 000 Australian.
- 51:48I don't know what that translates to.
- 51:49I mean, it's like rupees and pesos.
- 51:56I don't think the conversion's that bad.
- 51:59Let me look, let's consult the, you Googly 190, 000, wait, I put 1.
- 52:059 million.
- 52:06That's too many.
- 52:08All right.
- 52:08122, 000 us dollars.
- 52:11That's still a lot of money.
- 52:12That is a lot of money for a four cylinder.
- 52:14And this is what we had.
- 52:15We discussed on the last episode, or maybe it was two episodes ago
- 52:19when they were going to bring out the AMG GT with the four cylinder.
- 52:21That is stupid.
- 52:23In a C class it makes sense to me, even in, maybe even in
- 52:27an E class to a lower degree.
- 52:29In an AMG GT, no, that's dumb.
- 52:31This next one, this is a fine Brad, dirt cheap.
- 52:34This wins the title, titles.
- 52:37Who has used the word goob recently?
- 52:41Thank you.
- 52:42When was the last time someone A goob for goober.
- 52:45That's what I wanted to talk about.
- 52:47Everything else here really doesn't matter because to your point, what
- 52:51was the last time you saw the word goob in print, let alone used.
- 52:56So I chuckled when I saw this on my newsfeed and I was
- 53:00like, all right, whatever.
- 53:01So what are we on about what it's time to talk about?
- 53:03Super rare V12 BMW Alpina.
- 53:06And the rest of the headline goes was stupid cheap because
- 53:09some goob swapped it to propane.
- 53:12Anybody realize the license plate on the car too?
- 53:19We can't say that on air.
- 53:20Just thought I would point that out there.
- 53:22That's one of Carlin's like seven words.
- 53:24You can't say on the air.
- 53:25That's for sure.
- 53:27Gorgeous.
- 53:28E 30.
- 53:298, 7 series.
- 53:30This is like the transporter.
- 53:32I mean, this is the car we all salivate over with a V12, which
- 53:36is even better than the 740.
- 53:37Obviously it's a 750 base car, but what a goob.
- 53:40It looks like a goob.
- 53:42Well, this is the guy that bought it, isn't it?
- 53:43Isn't this the guy that bought it to fix it?
- 53:45So that's not the goob.
- 53:46No, there's a lot of goob in this.
- 53:49There's so much goob.
- 53:51But the license plate is my favorite part of the thing.
- 53:53It's just, the whole thing is delicious.
- 53:55Sticking with Alpena, I did actually see a newer Mangle era, Alpena 7
- 54:01series on the road the other day.
- 54:03There's a lot of like interesting shit in my like area.
- 54:05Well, there's nothing interesting in this news, so we'll just keep going.
- 54:09So we got nothing for the uncool wall and we could probably
- 54:12nominate a lot of really ugly BMWs.
- 54:15Same with Mercedes.
- 54:17I think we have already.
- 54:18Like, how about the iX?
- 54:19Oh my god.
- 54:20The new M5.
- 54:20I mean, they all go on the uncool wall.
- 54:22Everything this month could go on the uncool wall.
- 54:24So, I guess, Tanya, you're not remiss.
- 54:26Because New Year's resolution achieved.
- 54:28We're not gonna talk about Tesla.
- 54:29You know, this could start a precedent.
- 54:31Maybe we're done with those jokers.
- 54:33I don't know.
- 54:33We'll see.
- 54:34We have to move on, though.
- 54:35Lowered expectations.
- 54:42This whole thing has lowered my expectations at this point, but Brad,
- 54:45this one, this one is for you because this is the kind of stuff that I
- 54:49associate with Mercedes and Mercedes ownership and just the whole ethos.
- 54:54Hey, this is the car and I would appreciate a new knob if that was
- 55:00my car, because I bet the original one would be falling apart.
- 55:03This is a very James May article, I gotta say.
- 55:07I saw this and I just started laughing because I was like,
- 55:09This is Mercedes stuff.
- 55:11So it's an R107 SL, you know, W116 S class late seventies.
- 55:16Like we're talking about Magnum PI, you know, the mayor from once upon a time,
- 55:19all that kind of stuff, drove one of these, you know, on TV, gorgeous car.
- 55:23I've always liked these.
- 55:24My dad's boss had one of these.
- 55:26It was a light blue, really nice car.
- 55:29All I have to do is read the headline Mercedes.
- 55:32Spent two years, two years, reproducing a vintage parking brake knob.
- 55:39Seriously?
- 55:40Oops.
- 55:41You've been in business for this long, you just, you're on top of
- 55:44the world, you're like, nobody's going to take it away from us.
- 55:46So we'll spend two years building a part that was made in 1975.
- 55:50Because it probably took them 18 months to find a blueprint, a schematic of it.
- 55:56It's a freaking knob!
- 55:59Maybe they had to source the same materials from 1975.
- 56:03First, they built a time machine.
- 56:05Then they got a knob from their normal production process
- 56:08and then brought it back.
- 56:09This also sheds interesting light on this particular car.
- 56:12Why is this so funny, though, outside of the word knob followed by the
- 56:16license plate that we saw earlier that you'll see in the show notes?
- 56:19This is the parking brake!
- 56:20You pull this lever out of the dashboard with this knob that looks
- 56:25like it came from a kitchen cabinet out of my grandmother's house.
- 56:28Like, what is this?
- 56:30Who thought this was a good idea?
- 56:32It's like a choke.
- 56:33It's got all the little ribs on the outside.
- 56:36Yes, there's so much detail.
- 56:37It's even got chrome inlay.
- 56:39I can understand why it took two years to make something out of ABS plastic.
- 56:44Brad, this is the news.
- 56:45This is Mercedes news.
- 56:47We got the V class.
- 56:48We got this.
- 56:48We got four cylinders in Australia going for 125 grand.
- 56:52That's what they've got going on.
- 56:53This is why we don't talk about them.
- 56:55But look at how much fun we're having.
- 56:56Making fun of them.
- 56:57Exactly.
- 56:58That's what we do.
- 56:58Do we not make fun of all the car manufacturers that
- 57:01we talk about on this show?
- 57:02That is the show.
- 57:03That's what we do.
- 57:04All right.
- 57:05Well, we got to talk about rich people thing.
- 57:07Sponsored by Garage Stop Magazine.
- 57:08Because after all, what doesn't belong in your garage?
- 57:11Well, this should belong in your garage.
- 57:13I do like.
- 57:14These, this one's a little extra special because here's Johnny's 1988
- 57:19Mercedes Benz 560 2 door up for grabs.
- 57:22What do we think?
- 57:23How much?
- 57:23Why don't you guys guess?
- 57:25How much do you think it's sold for?
- 57:26I always liked this game.
- 57:27Too much?
- 57:28With the people who can appreciate this.
- 57:29Are they still alive?
- 57:30I mean, Johnny Carson, who the hell cares about Johnny Carson these days?
- 57:34We need two prices then.
- 57:35We need the Johnny Carson associated price uplift.
- 57:39And then if this was just.
- 57:41Johnny Randoson's car.
- 57:43The obscure reference to the gray one that was on the Raven spin off series
- 57:48of Highlander, because she drove one of these, a beautiful pewter color.
- 57:51No one knows what you're talking about.
- 57:53I know, but it was a gray 560 SEC, gorgeous car.
- 57:56But anyway, moving on.
- 57:57This thing should be like 30 grand.
- 57:59Oh.
- 57:59Oh.
- 58:00Oh.
- 58:00The non Carson version.
- 58:02I can't guess because I've clicked further through and saw the price.
- 58:05And Tanya, you.
- 58:07Hit it on the money.
- 58:0832, five.
- 58:10Because the person that bought it doesn't give a crap about Johnny Carson.
- 58:14This is the German equivalent to John Boyce LeBaron.
- 58:17It's just like that Seinfeld episode.
- 58:19Oh my God.
- 58:20Can you get ass man on the license plate?
- 58:23That was the goob.
- 58:24Why would you want that when you could have a GR Corolla, a variety of other
- 58:32better two door Mercedes that came.
- 58:34Later than that or earlier than that if we go back to the SL because
- 58:39it's Johnny Carson's so it smells like cheap cologne and cigars.
- 58:43I mean, that's what you want, right?
- 58:45Probably hookers.
- 58:45You hit the radio.
- 58:46It's Ed McMahon.
- 58:47He's like,
- 58:50Man, look at that car phone.
- 58:51That was 500 bucks extra for that.
- 58:53But is Mercedes going to need to make extra knobs for it?
- 58:56It's going to take them two years if you need one of them.
- 58:58True, true.
- 58:59It's super clean though.
- 59:00I mean for 32 grand, that's a super clean car.
- 59:03It's just not very good looking.
- 59:04No, the white is not nice.
- 59:05I would repeat that.
- 59:06No, I would get an early 2000 CL. So moving on with rich people thangs.
- 59:11Did everybody forget that BMW bought up some British auto manufacturers?
- 59:16You know, BMW owns Mini, BMW owns Rolls Royce.
- 59:19A bunch of other stuff.
- 59:20I didn't know they own Morgan.
- 59:21Well, they run BMW power plants in the Morgans and there's a new one coming.
- 59:26I don't hate it.
- 59:26I don't hate it either.
- 59:27It's kind of cool actually.
- 59:29It's probably still got a wooden frame too.
- 59:30So it's their plus six models running a straight BMW six cylinder, making 335
- 59:34horsepower in a turbocharged three liter.
- 59:37Here's the clincher.
- 59:38I know we weren't going to talk about Tesla, but you know how the
- 59:41Cybertruck has like one wiper blade?
- 59:43This has no wiper blades.
- 59:44Did they perfect the lasers?
- 59:45No, it has three wipers.
- 59:47In the front!
- 59:48Three?
- 59:48Three!
- 59:49How does that work?
- 59:50Look at it!
- 59:50It has three wiper blades.
- 59:52Oh, you're right.
- 59:52I didn't pay attention.
- 59:53Three little teeny wiper blades.
- 59:55Look at that.
- 59:55The question is, with BMW involved, how many turn signals does it have?
- 1:00:00Zero!
- 1:00:00Look at it!
- 1:00:01There are none to be found.
- 1:00:02You know what?
- 1:00:03They had to do it that way because the height of the glass is too short.
- 1:00:07Yes, but you see, they figured it out, and then the opposite end of the
- 1:00:10spectrum, when the glass is too big
- 1:00:15One white us who ruled them all.
- 1:00:17We all know that this is gonna be a $200,000 card that we can't
- 1:00:20afford, but Morgans are cool.
- 1:00:23They're very boutique, they're very niche.
- 1:00:25I love the three wheeler, the Morgan three wheeler, they're super cool, but if you
- 1:00:29ever been around one or getting a chance to ride in one, they're quirky and they.
- 1:00:33And it's that old school, nostalgic British roadster stuff.
- 1:00:37And it's like, if that's what you're into, I'll never forget that episode
- 1:00:40of Top Gear where they slid out the Arrow 8 from underneath of that 4 bus
- 1:00:44that they were transporting it in.
- 1:00:45I mean, that's so cool.
- 1:00:47And that's to talk to the scale of the Morgans too.
- 1:00:49They're really small.
- 1:00:50So again, if you like that British roadster and you want that bit of
- 1:00:53classic driving and you want something very modern at the same time, it's
- 1:00:57definitely something to look at going back to what we talked about last
- 1:01:00month with like Hamilton talking about, you know, hyper cars are dumb.
- 1:01:03You should buy a classic car.
- 1:01:04I honestly think this checks the box in both cases, you're getting a
- 1:01:08new car that is fast and reliable.
- 1:01:11I'm going to put air quotes around that.
- 1:01:13But you get that classic feel, right?
- 1:01:15So you don't have to put up with the classic car
- 1:01:17maintenance if you don't want to.
- 1:01:18I love the Morgan three wheeler, uh, just cause I think it's like very
- 1:01:21unique and the motorcycle motor up front and everything's really super cool.
- 1:01:25These remind me too much of like Cruella de Vil or League
- 1:01:28of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
- 1:01:30It's just, it's not my style.
- 1:01:31Little bit, yeah.
- 1:01:32It looks like the Nautilus in a way.
- 1:01:34Yeah, I feel you there.
- 1:01:35Well, that wraps that up.
- 1:01:37So what's next?
- 1:01:38Oh!
- 1:01:39Have they come out of hibernation?
- 1:01:40Do we have anything going on down south?
- 1:01:43Down in Florida?
- 1:01:44We got some alligators and beer?
- 1:02:00I have not only procured you some Florida men out of hibernation.
- 1:02:04I have also added a Mercedes man to the mix.
- 1:02:09So we have both a BMW man, a Mercedes man, and a delightful
- 1:02:15side order of Florida man.
- 1:02:16Let's go.
- 1:02:17I always look forward to this.
- 1:02:18We will start with BMW man.
- 1:02:20This could have very easily been Cars and Coffee Mustang man.
- 1:02:24Very expensive M850i BMW man who decided he was going to do some
- 1:02:30sort of launch mode stunt in his 523 horsepower luxury vehicle in a
- 1:02:36shopping parking lot in California.
- 1:02:38Suffice it to say he ends up nearly taking out what looked like to be a transformer,
- 1:02:42some greenery, and three other vehicles that were parked in the parking lot.
- 1:02:47Obliterating one of them in the rear.
- 1:02:49That is epic.
- 1:02:50I'm not even sure how you do that much damage.
- 1:02:53Did he hit an Ultima?
- 1:02:54Is that what that is?
- 1:02:55Thought maybe it was a Lexus.
- 1:02:57It's got turn signals at work.
- 1:02:58It can't be a BMW.
- 1:02:59But it's really unrecognizable.
- 1:03:01Oh, that's really bad.
- 1:03:02That one clearly took the brunt of it, and then he must have
- 1:03:05ricocheted off and then hit the other two poor unsuspecting vehicles.
- 1:03:10Public service announcement.
- 1:03:11Don't do stupid crap like this.
- 1:03:12Durability test in the parking lot.
- 1:03:15I would love to see what the front of the BMW looks like.
- 1:03:19It's giant grills.
- 1:03:20Ain't two pedestrians.
- 1:03:21Now, this next one, I have to warn people.
- 1:03:25There's graphic content here.
- 1:03:26Uh oh.
- 1:03:27It's disturbing and it's uncalled for.
- 1:03:30And I think this man needs to have his Mercedes tested.
- 1:03:33So this is British man whose dash cam, while he left his car at
- 1:03:38whatever the service shop, they took it into what is a very disgusting
- 1:03:41looking car wash that looks like it's a urinal from a bad gas station.
- 1:03:45Needless to say, the dash cam, and there's video of this, thankfully it's blurred.
- 1:03:49You should watch it because it's horrific when it gets to the end.
- 1:03:53The mechanic, or whoever this technician person was, decided to urinate
- 1:04:01on this man's A35 Mercedes.
- 1:04:08What possessed these people?
- 1:04:09Who does this?
- 1:04:10Apparently this guy does.
- 1:04:13You gotta go, you gotta go.
- 1:04:14I mean, come on.
- 1:04:15Obviously he's been pissing on these walls the whole time and he went,
- 1:04:18Oh look, something new to be on.
- 1:04:20I mean, it looks like the walls have been pissed on.
- 1:04:23I know it's green algae, but still.
- 1:04:25Working his territory.
- 1:04:26I think the car needs to have some testing done on it to make sure it's clean.
- 1:04:30Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
- 1:04:32That's unreal!
- 1:04:34Alright, then we'll come back across the pond and we're gonna go to Florida.
- 1:04:38Yeah!
- 1:04:38Cause the Florida men Have woken.
- 1:04:41Oh boy.
- 1:04:42And we got Florida man drive bizarre chop car for no good reason.
- 1:04:47This looks like something Daniel would make.
- 1:04:50This is, this is nothing new.
- 1:04:52This is what the Volkswagen people did with their diesel gig cars.
- 1:04:55This isn't new.
- 1:04:57Is this a neon?
- 1:04:58No, it's a Chevy Aveo.
- 1:05:00This is bad.
- 1:05:02The genesis of this was it's involved in some sort of side
- 1:05:05collision and I guess you can kind of see that from the passenger side
- 1:05:08because it does look damaged there.
- 1:05:10The handrail?
- 1:05:12Hey man, you can't fall out of the, it's probably there to keep
- 1:05:16you from falling out of the car.
- 1:05:18That's probably makes it legal.
- 1:05:19I mean, look, he put that, he put that half cage in there too.
- 1:05:22The half cage that's below his neck.
- 1:05:24What does that even serve the purpose?
- 1:05:30This is bad.
- 1:05:31Apparently, allegedly, the guy had some thought that, you know,
- 1:05:34he was going to turn this thing.
- 1:05:36Don't say a race car.
- 1:05:37It'd be lightweight.
- 1:05:38It'd be a game changer.
- 1:05:40Unfortunately, sadly, it tops out at 95 miles an hour.
- 1:05:44Regardless of what it weighs.
- 1:05:45That's it.
- 1:05:46Whoopsies.
- 1:05:47You need to tune.
- 1:05:48Wake those ponies up.
- 1:05:50I think I've seen less bars in a handicapped shower.
- 1:05:53This thing is so bad.
- 1:05:54To your point, I think I've seen this parked on Daniel's property.
- 1:05:59All right, don't click the next link.
- 1:06:01Oh boy.
- 1:06:02Okay.
- 1:06:02Cause we're gonna play a guessing game, but you can't, you can't
- 1:06:05flick the link before you guess.
- 1:06:07Okay.
- 1:06:08So we got a Florida man arrested after a 100 mile an hour chase
- 1:06:11through Kennedy Space Center.
- 1:06:13But we haven't had a good 100 mile an hour chase in a while.
- 1:06:16Now the real question is.
- 1:06:17What was he driving?
- 1:06:18I will give you a hit.
- 1:06:19It wasn't a BMW or Mercedes.
- 1:06:21When we do the lost and found section, who's the guy that Brad's
- 1:06:25always looking for the new old car?
- 1:06:27Uh, Chuck LaDuck.
- 1:06:27Chuck LaDuck.
- 1:06:29That's your hit.
- 1:06:31Car was this guy driving over a hundred miles an hour in Florida chocolate duck
- 1:06:36sold jeeps and rams No, but that's not the car you're usually looking for.
- 1:06:41No Is he driving a dart click the link baby and tell me what that car
- 1:06:46is That's awesome, that's awesome That was your first mistake, boy.
- 1:06:55Second mistake was doing cocaine and getting in the car, but hey, whatever.
- 1:06:59Yes, obviously.
- 1:07:00Where are his shoes?
- 1:07:03Cocaine, do we need to say anymore?
- 1:07:05Not at all.
- 1:07:06I love this from the sheriff's office.
- 1:07:08If you try to run from us in Brevard County, we promise
- 1:07:12you'll only go to jail tired.
- 1:07:16All right.
- 1:07:17I saved the best for last.
- 1:07:19Here we go.
- 1:07:20There's a video.
- 1:07:21Oh no.
- 1:07:22Because we haven't had one of these in a while either.
- 1:07:25But caught on camera, Florida man riding a lawnmower, crashes into mailboxes.
- 1:07:32And he's good.
- 1:07:33He's good.
- 1:07:33There's a lot, there's a lot of mowing lawn in Florida.
- 1:07:37I gotta say.
- 1:07:47How did he flip over the front of it?
- 1:07:53Ice over tea kettle!
- 1:07:56I watch that all day!
- 1:07:57Oh my god, that's so good!
- 1:07:59I love how the sea comes up and just whacks him.
- 1:08:05Like, make sure he goes all the way over.
- 1:08:07And then he's stumbling down through that gullet.
- 1:08:10This is so awesome!
- 1:08:15You know, it's an awesome day.
- 1:08:17I know we all were like, Ugh, everybody's got ring cameras.
- 1:08:21But this is great.
- 1:08:23This is the reason why you should have a ring camera on your house.
- 1:08:27It's to capture stuff like this.
- 1:08:29He flipped over the lawnmower, stumbled through the drain ditch, and then got back
- 1:08:34on the lawnmower like nothing happened.
- 1:08:36Did you see what he hit?
- 1:08:37The mailbox was encased in stone.
- 1:08:40And that's why people do it.
- 1:08:41That's so good.
- 1:08:42Whew.
- 1:08:43Oh, I needed that.
- 1:08:44Florida man's back, baby.
- 1:08:46With a vengeance.
- 1:08:46Stop, bless.
- 1:08:47Woohoohoo!
- 1:08:48Only in Florida.
- 1:08:50All right, well, it's time we go behind the pit wall, talk about motorsports news.
- 1:08:54And all there is to talk about is Formula One, because BMW, ah.
- 1:08:59We talked about BMW and Rolex.
- 1:09:01We did.
- 1:09:01Well, we'll kind of close that loop to say that BMW did qualify on the pole
- 1:09:07at Rolex with Vanthor behind the wheel.
- 1:09:09But then he, the same driver that put BMW on the pole, threw it all
- 1:09:13away in the last hour of the race.
- 1:09:16By being too aggressive.
- 1:09:17So goodbye, BMW that gave Porsche the win and everything else.
- 1:09:21So all there is left to really talk about is torque sensors and formula one.
- 1:09:31Formula
- 1:09:42one season hasn't started yet.
- 1:09:43Russell is the senior driver at Mercedes now.
- 1:09:47Yep.
- 1:09:47Yeah.
- 1:09:48Is there anything else to say?
- 1:09:49He thinks it's going to launch a new era for himself or a new chapter
- 1:09:53or whatever, but he has no team support because he's got forget who
- 1:09:57now is the dude, but he's a complete rookie green, green, green and F1.
- 1:10:02Oh, that's Antonelli.
- 1:10:03Antonelli.
- 1:10:04So that's great, but it's also helpful when you have a teammate that
- 1:10:07at least is marginally competitive alongside you that can do things like.
- 1:10:13Help block or fend off the approach of everyone else.
- 1:10:17But I, I see him being mostly alone and he's probably going to struggle.
- 1:10:22Antonelli is what, how old is he now?
- 1:10:25Well, I don't know what he's 19.
- 1:10:27I think he's like the youngest formula one driver on the grid.
- 1:10:30I don't think he's the youngest to start a formula one race.
- 1:10:33But he's the youngest in Formula One and right now.
- 1:10:35And it's just like, apparently Mercedes hand picked him when he was 11 back
- 1:10:40when he was go karting and stuff.
- 1:10:41And so I don't know, they, I guess they've invested a lot of money in him and time
- 1:10:44and resources over the last eight years.
- 1:10:47So they're hoping he's going to be the next prodigy.
- 1:10:49Didn't he have like a big, massive, unnecessary wreck one of his first races?
- 1:10:54I believe so.
- 1:10:54Yeah.
- 1:10:55I don't see good things for Mercedes this year.
- 1:10:57Yeah.
- 1:10:58But there is rumor that your boy Botas.
- 1:11:00He's a reserve driver again for them.
- 1:11:03Yeah, which honestly would mean if Antonelli doesn't deliver maybe
- 1:11:08there's a chance they kick him out and put Botas back in the seat.
- 1:11:10But then Botas would be the senior driver.
- 1:11:13Would he though?
- 1:11:14Or does he got to take team orders from Russell?
- 1:11:16I guess it would depend on uh, what the performance looks like.
- 1:11:19Botas is faster than Russell.
- 1:11:20We already know that, right?
- 1:11:22So what is he going to do?
- 1:11:23Just sandbag the whole time?
- 1:11:24And are we just saying senior driver as like, as a product of their age, or do
- 1:11:29we mean like their seniority, the lead driver, like the driver one and driver
- 1:11:33two by senior, we'd mean the lead for the team, which generally should be
- 1:11:38dictated by experience or it should be dictated by wins, whoever's performing
- 1:11:42the best, which would then be Botas.
- 1:11:45I was going to say, because Russell has none and Antonelli has none.
- 1:11:48No, Russell's won, I don't know, three, four.
- 1:11:52There's more that goes into it, obviously, than wins and stuff like that and
- 1:11:55experience and everything, but it's who they're hanging their future on.
- 1:11:59Which probably wouldn't be Botas.
- 1:12:01Because Botas is towards the end of his career.
- 1:12:02But Russell is still very much in the middle of his career.
- 1:12:05He's like reaching his peak or his prime.
- 1:12:07Antonelli is starting, you know, what they're hoping is a really good career.
- 1:12:11But.
- 1:12:12To talk about something Mercedes adjacent, who is the quote unquote
- 1:12:17senior driver now at Ferrari?
- 1:12:18Is it Hamilton or is Leclerc still driver one?
- 1:12:22It's gotta be Hamilton.
- 1:12:23That is something I've been wondering because that is a very ugly
- 1:12:28political drama that they are now in.
- 1:12:30Because Leclerc was driver one when Sainz was there, right?
- 1:12:34Correct.
- 1:12:35Supposed to be.
- 1:12:35Yeah.
- 1:12:36But how do you bring the seven time world champion onto your
- 1:12:40team and say you are number two?
- 1:12:42And this goes back to what I said last time about Lewis Hamilton,
- 1:12:47not being able to do jack of all at Ferrari, because if they play Ferrari
- 1:12:52politics, like they always have.
- 1:12:54Just like the opportunities when Barrichello had to win over Shumi.
- 1:12:58And they said, get out of the way, Rubens.
- 1:13:00Michael's coming through.
- 1:13:02If LeClaire is senior driver, Hamilton has to follow team orders.
- 1:13:06Cause that's the way it works.
- 1:13:07And he's not going to amount to Jack at the end of the year, because he's always
- 1:13:11going to be in second place to LeClaire.
- 1:13:12Unless he's outperforming LeClaire, then they're going to tell him.
- 1:13:16Depends on how his contract is written.
- 1:13:18If his contract is written, that he is the number two driver.
- 1:13:21He's done.
- 1:13:22There is no way his contract is written.
- 1:13:24He's a number two driver.
- 1:13:25He is going for eighth world champion.
- 1:13:28There's so there's no way he's going to sign something that's going to prevent
- 1:13:31him from being an eight time champion.
- 1:13:33Then that answers your question.
- 1:13:35Yeah, I guess it does.
- 1:13:36But if he's not performing, I don't think they're just going to
- 1:13:39be like LeClair sandbag and make sure, you know, you let Lewis win.
- 1:13:42Right.
- 1:13:43But if he actually is a contender, there's no way they're going to tell LeClair.
- 1:13:47Yeah, that's true.
- 1:13:48And to Eric's point in previous episodes, They have to actually be
- 1:13:51in a position to win a race before any of this comes in question anyway.
- 1:13:57So they've still got a lot of work to do.
- 1:13:58This is all posturing now because we don't know what's going to happen.
- 1:14:02The only thing we do know is they revealed the new cars, which to me look
- 1:14:06exactly like the cars from last year.
- 1:14:08They always do like a couple of years ago, I got super excited about all the
- 1:14:12car reveals and I looked at them and like, sometimes they release them in
- 1:14:15like really cool colors or something really unique and then comes race day.
- 1:14:19And it's like, it's the exact same cars before.
- 1:14:21What did you change?
- 1:14:22What is this?
- 1:14:23I don't care.
- 1:14:24I've been saying that and everybody makes fun of me, but whatever.
- 1:14:27It's fine.
- 1:14:28And the Mercedes especially looks the same as it did the W 16, whatever
- 1:14:33the hell, whatever cares, same cars last year with suckier drivers.
- 1:14:37When does your album come out?
- 1:14:40What do we call my album?
- 1:14:42Bimmers and Benz.
- 1:14:43If I may digress for a moment, just tangentially, I finally started
- 1:14:48watching the Netflix docudrama Senna.
- 1:14:51Oh, did you?
- 1:14:52I am on the final episode.
- 1:14:55Of course, I know how it ends.
- 1:14:56It's like Titanic.
- 1:14:59No spoilers.
- 1:15:01Unfortunately, I know how it ends.
- 1:15:03Wow.
- 1:15:03That's interesting.
- 1:15:06Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:07You got to listen to the podcast episode we did with John Summers and Will Ross.
- 1:15:11And I have not because I've wanted to experience the series for myself.
- 1:15:15You'll have to come back and tell us if we were right.
- 1:15:17Well, I will say, and you don't have to confirm or deny
- 1:15:21anything, there is definitely a sense of, this is Jesus Christ.
- 1:15:27So the word the motoring historian John Summers likes to use is beatification.
- 1:15:32That is the official word he uses to summarize that
- 1:15:35sentiment that Senna is God.
- 1:15:37Yeah.
- 1:15:38Very interesting.
- 1:15:39And Prost is Darth Vader, but you know, whatever, it's all good.
- 1:15:42Is that completely untrue?
- 1:15:46Well, you need to listen to the episode for sure, because we get into all that.
- 1:15:49So that being said, last little bit of Formula One stuff.
- 1:15:52Your boy, Toto, Mr. Mercedes, highest paid player in Formula One.
- 1:15:57This is why Mercedes can't win anything.
- 1:15:59They're too busy paying Toto's salary.
- 1:16:01He had a response to Hamilton's iconic recreation of Schumacher's
- 1:16:05photograph at Maranello.
- 1:16:07What do we think?
- 1:16:07I don't actually know what his response was.
- 1:16:10The article is clickbait.
- 1:16:11No, they, they have it down there.
- 1:16:13It's a little bit like you divorce amicably and it's all good.
- 1:16:16Then you see your ex partner for the first time with a new friend.
- 1:16:19I'm really happy for him.
- 1:16:20And I told him that those pictures were iconic.
- 1:16:22that he made.
- 1:16:23It was so well curated and no surprise with Lewis.
- 1:16:26So it's all good fun.
- 1:16:27He's fine.
- 1:16:28Do people not realize it is literally a copy of something
- 1:16:31that Schumacher did 30 years ago?
- 1:16:33Literally everybody realizes that, yes.
- 1:16:36It's nothing new or iconic.
- 1:16:38It was already done and it was iconic then.
- 1:16:41It's weird.
- 1:16:41Am I wrong?
- 1:16:42Well, he's trying to tap into his inner Schumacher.
- 1:16:45This is my problem with Hamilton.
- 1:16:47If you remember him when he was really young and he showed up on Top Gear
- 1:16:51and he was like the last one to drive the old piece of junk celebrity car
- 1:16:55that they had and he was like super fast and he blew everybody out of the
- 1:16:58water and he was just a young guy.
- 1:17:00That was the last time I think I saw Hamilton.
- 1:17:02Like.
- 1:17:03Be himself.
- 1:17:04He turned into this machine of the media kind of thing.
- 1:17:08And he's like a little Ken doll that they dress up.
- 1:17:11I feel like he never gets to be who he was then when he was up and coming in racing.
- 1:17:17And he was fast and he was good and not saying he isn't
- 1:17:19good today, but he's older.
- 1:17:21He's more mature now.
- 1:17:22And I think he's part of the machine rather than just being himself.
- 1:17:25So that brings up a good point.
- 1:17:27You think this photo was put together by Ferrari and it wasn't Hamilton's idea.
- 1:17:32I do think that yes, he's like a little dress up toy.
- 1:17:35He's a puppet.
- 1:17:35See that Ferrari's trying to make a statement.
- 1:17:38You got to remember Ferrari too.
- 1:17:39You don't go to Ferrari and give them an idea.
- 1:17:42They tell you what needs to be done.
- 1:17:45That's what they wanted.
- 1:17:46And maybe in their eyes, they see Hamilton as Schumacher's replacement.
- 1:17:50Schumacher never got.
- 1:17:52The 8th, he left after his 7th, right?
- 1:17:54He went to Mercedes.
- 1:17:55Speaking of Mercedes, never accomplished anything there.
- 1:17:59And then obviously the tragedy of the accident and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:18:02And now they have Hamilton and they're like, we can be part of the
- 1:18:058th that we never had with Shumi.
- 1:18:07So let's sort of pick up where Schumacher left off.
- 1:18:09But it's not just let him be who he's going to be.
- 1:18:12And I guess, I don't know.
- 1:18:13That's what turns me off about it versus like, I know that
- 1:18:17Alonzo is the elder statesman.
- 1:18:19I'm not a huge Alonzo fan, but Alonzo has always been Alonzo.
- 1:18:23When he was in WEC, when he was in Formula One, when he won the IndyCar, it's like,
- 1:18:26Hey, you just kind of follow him around.
- 1:18:27You're glad it's Alonzo.
- 1:18:28You know, he is who he is.
- 1:18:29But there's been, for me, this transformation with Lewis that
- 1:18:32I. I don't understand, but I'm glad to see Botas back.
- 1:18:36He's the Finn that's going to be an Australian soon, right?
- 1:18:38Like that's, he's making his own transformation, but in a good way.
- 1:18:41We won't belabor it, but I think he is being who he is and who he
- 1:18:45is, is a person that evolved from where he was when he was younger.
- 1:18:49And whether we like what that evolution is, it's an evolution for him.
- 1:18:53That's fair.
- 1:18:54That's fair.
- 1:18:55Well, on that depressing bit of food for thought
- 1:19:06Our Motorsports News is brought to you in partnership with the International
- 1:19:09Motor Racing Research Center.

- 1:23:42Is he a Florida man when he goes to Florida?
- 1:23:44I thought he was a New Zealand man.
- 1:23:46Did you know he lived in Germany and he drove a BMW?
- 1:23:51I'm going to hit record because we always lose the good
- 1:23:53stuff if we don't hit record.
- 1:23:55Yeah.
- 1:23:55The rest of the, the rest of the discussion is crap.
- 1:23:58It's the good stuff always happens that 10 minutes before and that two minutes
- 1:24:03after that's the bet that's gold.
- 1:24:05That's gold, Jerry.
- 1:24:06It's gold.
- 1:24:07Well, that's when the red lights off.
- 1:24:10That's how the good stuff comes out.

- 1:24:14Yeah, they made it so small now you can't even tell that it's there.
- 1:24:17Out there, you gotta, you gotta hover over something to see it come up.
- 1:24:20I know, I know.
- 1:24:21And like we say in the Virtual Center Conversations, keep the wheels
- 1:24:24turning and the throttle wide open.
