Transcript
- 0:00If you guys would please turn to Philippians chapter 2 as we continue our journey on the
- 0:21perseverance of the saints.
- 0:24Like I said, many times we think about perseverance from just the perspective of making it through.
- 0:29But God perseveres us not only in His return and being with Him.
- 0:37We persevere every day in His faithfulness to His people.
- 0:43He brings us through.
- 0:46So today we're going to be dealing with the issue of the mind of Christ, Philippians chapter
- 0:502 verse 1 through 11.
- 0:52I think a lot of times we read verses 1 through 11 and we kind of take what's being said here
- 0:57in a very, we miss the picture I think.
- 1:03So I'm hoping as we go through this it will clarify a little bit more about His faithfulness.
- 1:12And you see Christ from a much more holy perspective is the term I want to think about.
- 1:22So principle number one, principle number one, to be in spirit and in one mind we must
- 1:29have the mind of Christ.
- 1:31So let's pray.
- 1:32Father I want to thank you so much for your word.
- 1:34Thank you for your faithfulness.
- 1:36Thank you for the truth.
- 1:38Help us Lord as we go through Philippians 2, 1 through 11 that we see you and we understand
- 1:44you and your character and the truth of this passage for your glory in Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:50To be one in spirit and one in mind we must have the mind of Christ.
- 1:54You can't be in unity with each other.
- 1:57You can't be in one mind with one another unless we have the mind of Christ.
- 2:04You must understand Christ's mind.
- 2:07You must understand Him.
- 2:09Encouragement, comfort, fellowship, affection, and sympathy must come from being united and
- 2:16having the mind of Christ, okay?
- 2:20Philippians chapter 2, verse 1 and 2.
- 2:22So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in
- 2:29the spirit, any affection and sympathy, make my joy complete or make my joy, complete my
- 2:37joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one
- 2:44mind.
- 2:45That's what the ESV says here.
- 2:47Interesting enough, in order for us to kind of grasp what Paul is saying here to the church
- 2:52of Philippi, we've got to go back a little bit.
- 2:57So I want you to go to chapter 1.
- 3:00Now I want you to hear, see if you hear the same idea of what he's going to be clarifying
- 3:05in chapter 2, in verse 27.
- 3:08Chapter 1, verse 27, only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ,
- 3:16so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm
- 3:27in one spirit with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.
- 3:36And not frightened in anything by your opponents.
- 3:41This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation and that from God.
- 3:47For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ, you should not only believe
- 3:52in him, but also suffer for his sake, engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and
- 4:01now hear that I still have.
- 4:04So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in
- 4:10the spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the
- 4:16same love, being in full of cord and of one mind.
- 4:20You see why he would continue this conversation.
- 4:24He's really just repeating again, verse 27, that if we are living in a life that is in
- 4:30a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, when he comes, he wants to make sure that they
- 4:36are in one spirit with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.
- 4:44So if there is any encouragement in Christ and any comfort from love and any participation
- 4:49in the spirit, any affection and sympathy for our suffering, then complete my joy by
- 4:59being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full of cord and of one mind.
- 5:05You see the thought here.
- 5:07A lot of times we read chapter 2 and we think it's got this own little thought.
- 5:11No, he's just carrying on a thought that he's saying, if we're going to suffer, let us do
- 5:16it with joy.
- 5:19Let us have the attitude that Christ had.
- 5:21And he clarifies this in verses 5 all the way down to 11.
- 5:31So I want you to hear something here.
- 5:33This whole idea of being of one mind and being united comes from the same attitude by which
- 5:40Christ had when he was one in oneness with the Father in heaven.
- 5:49That's what he's implying here.
- 5:50I want you to kind of see this.
- 5:53Doesn't mean that Christ stopped being one with the Father and one with the Spirit.
- 5:58He did not stop being one with the Father and one with the Spirit.
- 6:00I and the Father are one.
- 6:02That's what Jesus said.
- 6:04But it's this idea that he was willing to do something in order for him to bring to
- 6:10us what we needed, desperately needed.
- 6:15Now, so if there's any encouragement in Christ, comfort, participation, affection, and sympathy,
- 6:24he says complete my joy by being of the same mind.
- 6:28This word mind is the word understanding.
- 6:33That's what this word mind is.
- 6:35This word mind is actually used several times in a couple of verses.
- 6:41So he's saying make my joy complete by being of the same understanding, having the same
- 6:49understanding of Christ.
- 6:52How can we be united if we don't understand Christ, if we look at Christ differently because
- 6:57of our denominations, if we look at Christ differently because we're not willing to submit
- 7:03to the full counsel of his word because we think we're right or they're right, then the
- 7:08whole point is there's no way we can be united in the Spirit of God because we're not united
- 7:14for the purpose of Christ.
- 7:16We're united for our own ideologies.
- 7:19So we have to be united in Christ.
- 7:22Understanding his word is the final authority in all things.
- 7:25Now, that's the first thing.
- 7:28First word is the mind.
- 7:29There means understanding.
- 7:31Having the same love.
- 7:32This word love is agape, and it literally just means brotherly love.
- 7:37Isn't that interesting?
- 7:40It's not gapo.
- 7:43This is agape, love for the brotherhood, love for the brothers of the faith, brothers and
- 7:49sisters of the faith.
- 7:51So I want you to see this.
- 7:53Complete my joy by being of the same understanding, having brotherly love, and then he says being
- 8:00in full accord and of one mind.
- 8:03Now, what's interesting, if you're in accord with something and you're of one mind with
- 8:08something, it means you're in harmony.
- 8:10So this word mind here is to be harmonious.
- 8:17Very important to understand this because in the ESV, it uses two words here that literally
- 8:24mean to be harmonious.
- 8:25According, be in full accord, and one mind.
- 8:30Have we ever thought about what it means to be harmonious, to be in harmony with Christ
- 8:35and with his word and with myself?
- 8:37That I'm in full accord with him, that I'm in one mind with him.
- 8:42Why ESV translators chose to use full accord and of one mind makes I don't understand because
- 8:51the translation literally means harmonious.
- 8:55But it makes sense when you think about the word harmonious here.
- 8:59But if I'm going to have the same understanding as Paul concerning Christ, if I'm going to
- 9:06have the same brotherly love as Christ has for us, then I'm going to be in harmony with
- 9:14him and his people.
- 9:16Makes sense.
- 9:19Principle number two, the mind of Christ is to live selfless and humble, to please God
- 9:25and to love him supremely.
- 9:27There's a term out here, out there in the world that John Piper coined called Christian
- 9:32hedonism.
- 9:33Hedonism.
- 9:34Hedonism means that everything that pleases me makes me happy, I will do.
- 9:44Christian hedonism is this idea that I will find my full pleasure and desires in him.
- 9:52Have we thought about Christian hedonism?
- 9:55Everybody's a hedonist.
- 9:57We all love something dearly.
- 10:00Christian hedonism is loving God supremely.
- 10:03Christian hedonism, biblical, here we go.
- 10:05Love God with all your heart and obey him in everything.
- 10:09Or he is your true pleasure and joy in all things you desire to please him.
- 10:18Or God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him, John Piper.
- 10:25Or only be very careful to observe the command, the commandment and the law that Moses, the
- 10:32servant of the Lord commanded you to love the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways
- 10:37and to keep his commandments and to cling to him and to serve him with all of your heart
- 10:42and with all of your soul.
- 10:44Joshua 22, 5.
- 10:47And as he said to him, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all
- 10:54your soul, with all your mind.
- 10:56This is the greatest and first commandment.
- 10:58And the second is like it, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.
- 11:01Jesus, Matthew 22, 37 through 39.
- 11:05So Christian hedonism is a biblical truth.
- 11:10How many times have we really thought about that?
- 11:12Well that's what we end up reading in Philippians chapter 2 verse 34, this idea of Christian
- 11:19hedonism, that I'm not living to please myself but I'm living to please him.
- 11:25That my full pleasure, my full joy, everything that I have in my entire being is to love
- 11:32him supremely.
- 11:35And it's seen in what Paul says here in verses 3 through 4, which is the opposite of that.
- 11:41Look what he says, do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit.
- 11:45In other words, it's not about you.
- 11:51But in humility, count others more significant than yourselves.
- 11:57Let each of you look not only to his own interest but also to the interest of others.
- 12:02There it is, Christian hedonism in practice.
- 12:04Have we ever thought about that?
- 12:07So when you think about your life, how much of you are you willing to sacrifice?
- 12:12Are you really willing to be a hedonist when it comes to Christ?
- 12:17Is he your full pleasure in everything you need and desire?
- 12:22Nothing else matters in life.
- 12:24We live for him and him alone, not for our temporary pleasures.
- 12:32And God in his goodness and faithfulness reaches down because he loves us and does for us.
- 12:42Christian hedonism, what an amazing thought.
- 12:44God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.
- 12:50Love that term, the John Piper states.
- 12:53Third principle, to love God supremely, you must have the mind of Christ.
- 12:58You cannot love God like Jesus loves the Father unless you have the mind of Jesus.
- 13:05Romans 12 verse 2, do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal
- 13:11of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and
- 13:17acceptable and perfect.
- 13:20A lot of times we think about having this mind, that this renewing of the mind is something
- 13:25that I actually, that actually I do on my own.
- 13:32It's this transformation in Christ.
- 13:36But be transformed by the renewal of your mind.
- 13:42Transformation can only come by Christ and renewal can only come from Christ.
- 13:48Now how do we prove this out?
- 13:50Philippians chapter 2 verse 5 through 7.
- 13:54Have this mind among yourselves which is yours in Christ Jesus.
- 14:01Have you ever thought about that?
- 14:02It's like how do I have the mind of Christ?
- 14:05You already have it, it's yours.
- 14:08Think about that.
- 14:10How do I learn to live this Christian life?
- 14:12You already have it, it's in Jesus.
- 14:15Well I don't know if I want to go that direction.
- 14:18I think my ways are a little bit easier.
- 14:20I think I got this figured out.
- 14:23How many of you guys can say you got this thing figured out?
- 14:25I don't think any of you guys got this thing figured out.
- 14:29Have this mind among yourselves which is yours in Christ Jesus who though he was in the form
- 14:36of God did not count equality with God something to be grasped but emptied himself by taking
- 14:44the form of a servant being born in the likeness of man.
- 14:49This verse, these verses are so distorted in many teachings for a lot of us it's frustrating.
- 14:57It's frustrating.
- 14:58I mean because many of us have read this and go see Jesus emptied himself.
- 15:05It's not the word.
- 15:07I don't know if there's a good translation there in the English.
- 15:11It could have just actually said it the way it should have been said because Jesus did
- 15:17not empty himself of anything.
- 15:19You're like but that's not what it says.
- 15:23Remember it's English.
- 15:25English kind of messes up everything sometimes.
- 15:28So let's look what it says here.
- 15:30Have this mind.
- 15:33Cherish the same views or strive for.
- 15:37In other words when we are cherishing the same views as Christ if we're striving to
- 15:43have the mind of Christ which is among yourselves which we have in Christ that kind of makes
- 15:52a little bit more sense.
- 15:55So it says cherish the views of Christ strive for the mind of Christ among yourselves.
- 16:01Are you striving to have the mind of Christ among yourselves.
- 16:07How much of Christ do you want to be like.
- 16:11How much of you does Christ have and people go well I give him my heart but does he have
- 16:19your mind because he can't have your heart if he doesn't have your mind.
- 16:27People take we take the opposite.
- 16:29He has my heart but he doesn't have your thoughts but he has my heart.
- 16:34He doesn't have your actions.
- 16:36He has my heart but he has my love.
- 16:40But how much do you think about the person you love.
- 16:44Now for some of you who probably sit next to the person that you love the most.
- 16:48I remember when I met my wife I couldn't stop thinking about her.
- 16:52Like why are you always on my mind.
- 16:54Always on my mind you know.
- 16:57That's what it means that we that our minds are fully on God all the time.
- 17:03I think about him I like I think about him all night.
- 17:06I woke up for 430 this morning.
- 17:08I'm like why can't I sleep.
- 17:11He's on my mind.
- 17:13You're on my mind.
- 17:19So strive for the mind of Christ which is yours.
- 17:24It's yours you already have it.
- 17:27The mind of Christ is there for you.
- 17:29Not only does he live in you in the person of the Holy Spirit it's written for you.
- 17:35You want the mind of Christ it's right here.
- 17:37I just dropped something that's alright.
- 17:40Okay now let's keep reading here.
- 17:43Look what it says here.
- 17:45Who though he was in the form of God.
- 17:49This word it means that he existed as God.
- 17:55He always was God always was God always will be God.
- 17:59That's what this literally means.
- 18:02Now think about that.
- 18:04Not that he was in the form of God but that he actually exists and existed as God.
- 18:10He always was existing.
- 18:13That's what this means.
- 18:15So if we are striving for the mind of Christ which is ours in Christ Jesus and we can have
- 18:22it then Jesus who has always existed as God did not deem anything a prize or anything
- 18:35to be held fast to or to retain in quality and in quantity.
- 18:41In other words his godness was not something that he demanded that he retain full total
- 18:52uttered unrestricted power.
- 18:56No he covered that in the skin in the body.
- 19:03Now I want you to think about this this word to be grasps or to not to count equality with
- 19:14God something to be grasped that term there literally means to deem anything a prize to
- 19:20be held fast to or retained in quantity or quality.
- 19:25In other words it's not something he demanded.
- 19:30Now if I'm going to do this I need all of it.
- 19:35No what it means is he willingly veiled it.
- 19:41He veiled it.
- 19:44If you have any questions about that read the gospel.
- 19:47How in the world could a God who was omniscient when scripture says that Jesus knew what was
- 19:54in them and in their heart why would we think that that's not a God character.
- 20:00If he emptied himself of these things how could he know what's in man's heart.
- 20:06If he says I'm the resurrection and the life and he raises a man from the dead then how
- 20:13in the world if he is the power of the resurrection the resurrection himself if he emptied himself
- 20:20of it how in the world did he do it.
- 20:23It's an oxymoron it makes no sense.
- 20:25Of course he veiled it.
- 20:27He used it when it was necessary and used it to the quantity and quality that was necessary.
- 20:34Trust me if God was to be here in his full unadulterated power we would not be existing.
- 20:44He even veils himself now.
- 20:48The only reason why the earth is not destroyed is because he's choosing not to destroy it.
- 20:56We always try to make Jesus more human than he is divine when he is fully divine and fully
- 21:03human.
- 21:04Well now he's fully divine in a resurrected body which is kind of amazing.
- 21:09We'll get on that another day.
- 21:12This word emptied.
- 21:15This word emptied means to cause a thing to be seen to be seen to be empty.
- 21:22That's literally what this word emptied means.
- 21:25It's to make it look like it's empty but it's not.
- 21:30Doesn't that make more sense now?
- 21:32Because that's literally what the word means.
- 21:34Look it up in your BLB.
- 21:36I'm not going to give you all the Greek words today.
- 21:39It's too many.
- 21:40Literally translation.
- 21:42Calls the thing to be seen to be seen to be empty.
- 21:46It's not empty but it looks like it is.
- 21:50So he calls himself to be seen as empty by taking on the form of a slave.
- 21:58Dulos.
- 21:59It's the one I gave you.
- 22:02Why do I use this word Dulos?
- 22:04The slave term.
- 22:07Some translations have bond servant.
- 22:09No.
- 22:10It's not what it means here.
- 22:13He was a slave.
- 22:16The lowest of the low.
- 22:18You cannot get more low than what Jesus brought himself down to be.
- 22:21A slave.
- 22:23A slave to the Father.
- 22:25A slave for our sake.
- 22:28He even slaved over his own disciples.
- 22:31I'm going to wash your feet.
- 22:32No.
- 22:33You shouldn't wash my feet.
- 22:34Wash my whole body.
- 22:35Yeah.
- 22:36I don't have enough water for you buddy.
- 22:40Right?
- 22:42I mean it's kind of nice that Peter would say don't wash everything.
- 22:47But the point is Jesus became a slave even to his servants.
- 22:53Even to the slaves.
- 22:56And he was born, being born in the likeness of man.
- 23:01He was born looking like a sinful people.
- 23:05Now do you see, you grab the concept of the mind of Christ here.
- 23:10Why Paul uses these terms that we should strive for and cherish the same views as Christ.
- 23:22We should not consider ourselves more highly, not think of ourselves more highly than we
- 23:27ought to think.
- 23:28No.
- 23:29He was God.
- 23:31And yet, even though he existed as God, he didn't deem it as a thing to hold onto, a
- 23:39prize that he must contend for.
- 23:44But he caused himself to be seen as empty.
- 23:49So you didn't really see the divinity of Christ if you were to just watch him walk by you.
- 23:56What you would see in the divinity of Christ is the work of Christ.
- 24:01Jesus says, judge me by my works.
- 24:03You've seen what I've done.
- 24:05You've seen the divinity.
- 24:08And they still rejected him.
- 24:09Isn't that amazing?
- 24:11Here we go.
- 24:14Fourth principle.
- 24:15The mind of Christ requires a heart of sacrifice.
- 24:21Romans chapter 12 verse 1.
- 24:23I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God to present your bodies as a
- 24:29living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
- 24:34Isn't that interesting?
- 24:37One of the most important Bible verses that you can use to clarify and understand Philippians
- 24:43chapter 2 verse 5 through 11 is Romans 1 and 2.
- 24:47Romans 12, 1 and 2.
- 24:52So the first part you see here is the sacrifice, the mind of Christ, having this understanding
- 24:58that I must die to myself.
- 25:00I must be transformed and changed.
- 25:03And my transformation and change by the renewing of my mind is to have the mind of Jesus, is
- 25:08to strive for those things.
- 25:11And if I have the mind of Christ, then my heart should be sacrificed.
- 25:15I should sacrifice everything that I have.
- 25:19Philippians chapter 2 verse 8.
- 25:21And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point
- 25:26of death, even death on the cross.
- 25:28If God of all creation put on flesh to die, how much more should you die?
- 25:38Not for me, but for him.
- 25:42How much are you willing to sacrifice on the altar as a living sacrifice every day that
- 25:49you're literally alive and walking and well?
- 25:53What are you willing to give, surrender for Christ?
- 25:58If he gave us his all, how much more should you give?
- 26:02That's the point.
- 26:03That's what he's saying here.
- 26:06So I appeal to you, brothers, by the mercies of God to present your bodies as a living
- 26:10sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
- 26:15If Christ did it, why aren't you?
- 26:17I mean, it's pretty simple.
- 26:21What's the scripture say?
- 26:24We must deny ourselves, take up a cross daily and follow him.
- 26:33Last principle.
- 26:37God the Father exalts the Son because of this reality, because of them, because of his mind,
- 26:44because of the mind of Christ, because of his attitude, because of his commitment, because
- 26:49of what he was, where his heart was, because of everything he is, his commitment to honoring
- 26:56the Father.
- 27:00Christ's commitment to honor the Father and to do the Father's will brings glory to the
- 27:05Godhead.
- 27:08Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
- 27:13so that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth
- 27:18and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
- 27:22Guess what?
- 27:23Even though we have the mind of Christ, even though we offer ourselves as a living sacrifice,
- 27:30even though we are being transformed by the renewing of our mind and committed to walking
- 27:37in the mind of Christ, there is only one thing.
- 27:45There's only one person, let me say it this way, that deserves this kind of exaltation
- 27:50and it's not you.
- 27:52It's him.
- 27:56Only one receives this honor and God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that
- 28:03is above every name, that at the name of Yahshua, every knee should bow.
- 28:10Trust me, every knee will bow.
- 28:14Every single person.
- 28:20And that day will come hopefully soon.
- 28:25So God, Christ has given us an example.
- 28:28If you want to have the mind of Christ, strive for it.
- 28:36Strive to know it.
- 28:37Let me say it that way.
- 28:39We have it, it's yours.
- 28:42Strive.
- 28:43Look out your salvation.
- 28:48Don't hold on to anything that you would consider as a prize, but in the same way, surrender
- 28:59your entire life to him and be a slave as he was.
- 29:08That's the mind of Christ.
- 29:09So I want to leave you with this last thing.
- 29:14So if there's any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in
- 29:19the spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the
- 29:26same love, being in full accord and of one mind, be harmonious.
- 29:35Commit your ways to him.
- 29:37Lord, we thank you and praise you for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 29:41Thank you for our time together.
- 29:43Lord, as we sing this last song for your honor and glory, I pray that we really reflect on
- 29:49the realities and the truths of having your mind and that we walk in the newness of life
- 29:57for your glory.
- 29:58Amen.
