SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the Operation Game Night Podcast.
• 0:19
SPEAKER_01: I am Clay, joined with Sam.
• 0:22
SPEAKER_01: Sam, what's the bear scene like in the land down under the other land down under New Zealand?
• 0:28
SPEAKER_00: Uh the only bears that you will see here are in the zoo.
• 0:33
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no wild bears roaming the streets of New Zealand.
• 0:36
  SPEAKER_00: No wild bears.
• 0:38
SPEAKER_00: Um I think I No, no, no, no bears.
• 0:43
SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say I think there was a I heard a story once about a polar bear, but it's the wrong side of the planet.
• 0:49
  SPEAKER_01: Oh shoot.
• 0:50
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 0:51
SPEAKER_01: What type of be so there's just no wild bears at all?
• 0:55
SPEAKER_00: Not even We don't really have any.
• 0:58
SPEAKER_00: We're like the total opposite to Australia.
• 1:00
SPEAKER_00: We have like no wild animals except or no native wild animals, I should say.
• 1:06
SPEAKER_00: Um like the only native mammal in New Zealand is a fruit bat.
• 1:13
  SPEAKER_00: Really?
• 1:14
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we have that's not that's not that's not very sexy.
• 1:19
  SPEAKER_00: It's real cute.
• 1:20
SPEAKER_00: It's like it's real tiny, it's like the size of your palm of the hand.
• 1:23
  SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
• 1:24
SPEAKER_00: But no, we have huge, huge uh bird, native bird population.
• 1:30
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 1:31
SPEAKER_00: Because I guess when we broke away from what's it called, Guandana land or whatever the what whatever it was when we was all connected.
• 1:39
  SPEAKER_01: Pangea.
• 1:40
SPEAKER_00: Pangea, is that what it was called?
• 1:41
  SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
• 1:42
SPEAKER_01: That sounds familiar to me.
• 1:43
SPEAKER_00: When when we broke off, we didn't bring anything with us.
• 1:47
  SPEAKER_01: Just birds.
• 1:48
  SPEAKER_01: Just birds.
• 1:49
SPEAKER_01: Just birds, birds and lizards.
• 1:51
  SPEAKER_01: Dang.
• 1:52
SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm glad you at least ha brought some bears over to put in the zoo, which is exactly what you do in the game we're talking about today, which is Baron Park by Phil Walker Harding.
• 2:06
SPEAKER_01: This came out in 2017.
• 2:09
SPEAKER_01: Sam, you want to tell me about your experience with Baron Park?
• 2:15
SPEAKER_00: So I love Phil Walker Harding games.
• 2:18
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 2:18
SPEAKER_00: We have talked to plenty about Gizmos.
• 2:21
  SPEAKER_00: It's it's an amazing game.
• 2:23
SPEAKER_00: He he creates puzzles, right?
• 2:28
SPEAKER_00: His games can almost, I reckon, be described as puzzles.
• 2:31
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 2:32
SPEAKER_00: Um not the most difficult and intricate games in the world, but but all of his games is just something satisfying when you get the right piece in the right place that does the right thing.
• 2:48
SPEAKER_00: And I grew I played heaps of Tetris growing up.
• 2:52
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 2:53
SPEAKER_00: So do you remember those handheld like literally the only game on it was Tetris, handheld Tetris games?
• 3:01
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 3:02
  SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_00: So we couldn't afford Game Boys or anything flashed like that when we were younger.
• 3:06
SPEAKER_00: So we we all had uh Tetris.
• 3:08
SPEAKER_00: So we'd on long trips sit in the back of the car and four kids all playing their handheld Tetris games.
• 3:17
SPEAKER_00: Um and I didn't know Tetris pieces were called polyominoes until I started uh my Instagram actually.
• 3:26
SPEAKER_00: Even before that, I didn't know they were called that.
• 3:29
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's one of those that's one of those obnoxious board gamer things that oh polyomino game.
• 3:36
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's a polyomino.
• 3:37
  SPEAKER_01: Yes.
• 3:39
  SPEAKER_01: Come on.
• 3:40
  SPEAKER_00: Get some friends, nerd.
• 3:42
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, seriously.
• 3:46
  SPEAKER_00: It's it's a Tetris piece, right?
• 3:47
  SPEAKER_00: They're Tetris pieces.
• 3:49
SPEAKER_00: Um and so I got the physical copy of Baron Park uh last week.
• 4:01
  SPEAKER_00: The week before.
• 4:02
SPEAKER_00: It's been one or two weeks.
• 4:04
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 4:05
SPEAKER_00: And I still haven't got it to the table.
• 4:09
SPEAKER_00: But I have played copious amounts of Baron Park on BGA, and I'm so looking forward to seeing to like the tactile moving the pieces around, placing them down instead of just being like rotate, spin, flip, place.
• 4:29
  SPEAKER_01: That's horrible.
• 4:30
SPEAKER_01: I can't play playing polyomino games on BGA.
• 4:35
  SPEAKER_01: I I don't love it.
• 4:37
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is hard work.
• 4:38
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, flip, spin, twist, shake it, do it, whatever.
• 4:42
SPEAKER_01: But yeah, and Baron Park is such a clean system.
• 4:45
SPEAKER_01: So, in in like the just a general overview of the game, you have these different types of tiles.
• 4:52
SPEAKER_01: You got your green tiles, they're like bathrooms and food trucks, and you know, different they're basically just filler tiles.
• 5:02
SPEAKER_01: It's the amenities of the park.
• 5:03
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
• 5:04
SPEAKER_01: And then you have your you know, white animal house tiles.
• 5:08
SPEAKER_01: And those, they're you know, they're like your standard shapes.
• 5:12
SPEAKER_01: You get your L shape, you get like basic squares, and they give you points, you know.
• 5:18
SPEAKER_01: The earlier that you get one of those tiles, the more points you get.
• 5:22
SPEAKER_01: And then there's these big heaping like enclosures that you can get.
• 5:28
SPEAKER_01: Um, and they give you a lot of points, but they're kind of unwieldy tiles to try and place.
• 5:33
SPEAKER_01: Um, and essentially you start with this like one little board, and there's symbols on there that you cover up.
• 5:40
SPEAKER_01: So when you place a tile, you'll cover up a symbol that says what areas of the board you can take your next tile from.
• 5:47
SPEAKER_01: So if I cover up the little green wheelbarrow symbol, I can take one of the little amenity tiles and I keep put that in my supply, and then it's an option to place later.
• 5:57
SPEAKER_01: Or if I cover up the big orange excavator, I can take one of those giant enclosure tiles.
• 6:02
SPEAKER_01: They're worth a lot of points but hard to place.
• 6:05
SPEAKER_01: Or I can take anything that's of a lesser value than that, which is nice.
• 6:10
SPEAKER_01: Um, and then you can also expand your zoo by covering up um the construction site symbols, and you add more tiles.
• 6:19
SPEAKER_01: And when you complete an entire section, you get to place this bear statue in your section of the zoo.
• 6:27
SPEAKER_01: Um, there's like one empty space on your little section board.
• 6:31
SPEAKER_01: And the earlier you get those bear statues, they start at like 16 points.
• 6:36
SPEAKER_01: First person who you know completes their entire thing, but this empty spot gets a 16-point bear statue that they place in their zoo.
• 6:44
SPEAKER_01: And the next person gets a 15.
• 6:46
SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, till the end, you're you know, placing bear statues that are worth like one or two points.
• 6:52
SPEAKER_01: So that's a nice little like race mechanism there.
• 6:55
SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that's that's essentially the game.
• 6:57
SPEAKER_01: You place a tile, you cover up symbols, you get that tile, and then it just goes round and round until somebody fills up their entire bear zoo, and then you see how many points you got on the board.
• 7:09
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, that weight right there on BGG is 1.66.
• 7:15
  SPEAKER_02: Yep.
• 7:15
SPEAKER_00: I think that might even be generous.
• 7:18
SPEAKER_00: On the high side, on the high side for sure, for sure.
• 7:22
SPEAKER_00: Um like the most difficult thing about this game is are those uh those uh concrete truck excavator tiles that have those wonky shapes, yeah, and figuring out how they can actually be placed and whether you have the room to them.
• 7:41
SPEAKER_00: Like I've I've played multiple games where I've been like, I'll grab that, and then I'm like, oh I can't I don't actually have any room to place that.
• 7:49
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
• 7:50
SPEAKER_00: But at least you stop another person from getting that tile.
• 7:53
SPEAKER_00: But it's it's you know, and it's it's almost like a little the little engine that could you always want to pick up a new tile, you always want to place a tile to get a new tile, and you never well I won't say that.
• 8:10
SPEAKER_00: You want to try and avoid picking up those pathetic portable toilets, yeah, yeah, and ice cream trucks and whatever they are, yeah until the until you absolutely have to.
• 8:24
SPEAKER_00: You want to get those big boy tiles.
• 8:27
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you you want to get this the the sun bear tile, you want to get the polar bear tile.
• 8:33
  SPEAKER_00: I'm 90% sure there's a koala bear in there, even though that's not technically a bear.
• 8:38
SPEAKER_01: Um I didn't even think about that.
• 8:41
SPEAKER_01: Is that what it is?
• 8:42
  SPEAKER_01: Dag on.
• 8:44
  SPEAKER_00: There's yeah, there's a there's a koala uh enclosure in in there.
• 8:48
SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure it's one of the uh one of the green tree ones.
• 8:53
  SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
• 8:54
SPEAKER_01: Wow, there's like 18 different languages here.
• 8:57
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but you you see there on the on like the um the the excavator part of it.
• 9:04
SPEAKER_00: Oh there's I grabbed once uh the bottom left, and you know the the the long one, it covers five spots.
• 9:15
  SPEAKER_00: That one there, yeah.
• 9:16
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the polar bear enclosure.
• 9:19
SPEAKER_00: I grabbed that because I was like, oh, it's four.
• 9:23
SPEAKER_00: No, that go because you cause your enclosures are only five by five.
• 9:33
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think four by four by four.
• 9:35
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, they're I think they're four by four.
• 9:37
  SPEAKER_00: Four by four.
• 9:38
SPEAKER_00: So you have to have already placed your second expansion park tile before you can place that.
• 9:47
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 9:48
SPEAKER_00: And so I took it and I was like, yeah, and I was like, oh, I wasted an entire turn because I I had four, and I was like, I'm gonna fill it up, it's gonna cover the little people symbol, and I'm gonna get my new tile, and I'm gonna complete a park all in one turn.
• 10:00
SPEAKER_00: No, if it fails, yeah.
• 10:03
SPEAKER_00: And there's no four, it's either three or five.
• 10:06
SPEAKER_00: There's no one of just four lengths.
• 10:08
SPEAKER_00: So there's things like that with little nuances, that's the hardest thing.
• 10:12
SPEAKER_00: But you you're really just completing a puzzle.
• 10:17
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 10:18
  SPEAKER_00: So it's so fun.
• 10:19
SPEAKER_01: It is just it's like constantly like just a little rewarding puzzle that you just keep getting things and covering things up, and you know, grabbing those bear statues feels great when you have are able to do that, and you know, racing to get the you know, the high value animal houses before they all get swooped up.
• 10:39
SPEAKER_01: And then if you play with the they call it an expert variant, but I'm pretty sure anybody can can play with it.
• 10:47
SPEAKER_01: But it basically gives you like three separate goal tiles that you can uh race towards.
• 10:54
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I do play with that on BGI.
• 10:55
SPEAKER_01: I've always played with that, yeah.
• 10:59
SPEAKER_01: The in the rule book you'll see when you break out your physical copy, it's called the expert variant.
• 11:05
  SPEAKER_01: Um and so yeah.
• 11:08
SPEAKER_00: I I I thought that was just part of the game.
• 11:10
  SPEAKER_01: Nope.
• 11:11
  SPEAKER_01: Nope.
• 11:11
SPEAKER_01: The base game is just uh it's just your bear statues and filling up the park.
• 11:17
SPEAKER_00: I think if you play this game, literally anybody who gets AP is gonna get AP, no matter what game they play.
• 11:27
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 11:28
SPEAKER_00: But if you play with people who don't have AP, you can get this game done.
• 11:32
SPEAKER_00: You can get a four-player game of this done in like what 30 minutes?
• 11:38
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
• 11:39
SPEAKER_01: I played with my kids last night.
• 11:41
SPEAKER_01: My wife, me and my wife, my nine and seven-year-old.
• 11:45
SPEAKER_01: And my kids were getting a little goofy, like they weren't they weren't completely on task about it, and we still finished it in like 40 minutes, probably.
• 11:54
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a quick game, right?
• 11:56
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 11:58
SPEAKER_00: I think this game takes longer to put on your table, probably, and set up the tiles than it does to actually play it.
• 12:04
  SPEAKER_01: That is true.
• 12:06
SPEAKER_01: That is my biggest complaint about this game, period.
• 12:10
SPEAKER_01: I this is probably one of my favorite, just like entry weight, teach to anybody type games.
• 12:18
SPEAKER_01: Um, but it is annoying sorting and stacking those tiles because they all have to go, you know, from highest to lowest, and then you have to have a certain amount of all the different green ones out based on the player count.
• 12:34
SPEAKER_01: So you have to kind of sift through those.
• 12:36
SPEAKER_01: And I'm at the point with it.
• 12:38
SPEAKER_01: I was trying to like keep them all in separate baggies for all the different types of enclosures and things.
• 12:43
SPEAKER_01: I just threw all the freaking tiles in the box just as a big heaping mess.
• 12:49
SPEAKER_01: And so when I got it out last night, it probably took me 20 minutes to set it up, which I didn't love.
• 12:55
SPEAKER_01: But I am looking at a 3D printed organizer for it.
• 13:00
SPEAKER_00: I was I was just gonna say that this is probably one of those games that could really benefit from an organizer.
• 13:07
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, for sure.
• 13:09
SPEAKER_01: Because like see if I could get this set up in five minutes, that would be I mean, that's a no-brainer to to pull out all the time.
• 13:17
SPEAKER_00: Well, that puts it on the regular okay rotation, then doesn't it?
• 13:20
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it does.
• 13:21
  SPEAKER_01: It does.
• 13:22
SPEAKER_00: I'm how do you how do you feel about this with with player count?
• 13:25
SPEAKER_00: Because like I said, I've only played on BGA and I've played it two, three, four players, and I feel like it's the same game no matter how many players you play with.
• 13:38
SPEAKER_00: The only thing that changes is maybe five minutes of time.
• 13:43
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it do you have a preferred player count?
• 13:46
SPEAKER_01: No, I've played it at four a few times, I've played it at three a few times, and you know, I think it like I said, it it's kind of annoying because you have to pick sift through the tiles, but it scales up and down nicely with with the player counts in that regard.
• 14:04
SPEAKER_01: Um, you remove some bear statues, you you remove some of the animal houses at three, and I'm sure you remove even more at two.
• 14:12
SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, I think it's just pleasant at any player count.
• 14:16
SPEAKER_01: I this I I only got this like a year and a half ago.
• 14:20
SPEAKER_01: It's been out since 2017, but you know, so it's still relevant in a world of the cult of the new.
• 14:27
SPEAKER_01: This is a good idea.
• 14:28
SPEAKER_00: I actually didn't realize that it was from 2017.
• 14:31
SPEAKER_00: I thought it was newer than that.
• 14:33
SPEAKER_01: No, no, this has been around.
• 14:36
SPEAKER_00: Has is it has it been reprinted or anything, or is it still just OG?
• 14:42
  SPEAKER_01: Just the OG.
• 14:43
SPEAKER_01: That all that's all I know of.
• 14:45
  SPEAKER_01: I think it's had some expansions.
• 14:46
SPEAKER_01: It's got like the Bad News Bears expansion, but I think that still came out before 2020, maybe.
• 14:51
SPEAKER_00: Bad news bears, like the cartoon.
• 14:54
  SPEAKER_00: That's what it's called, I think.
• 14:56
SPEAKER_00: But it's not, it's not, it's not the same as the I mean, there's a cartoon called Bad News Bears, isn't there?
• 15:03
SPEAKER_01: I think there was a a baseball team or something.
• 15:06
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, here we go.
• 15:07
  SPEAKER_01: Expansions.
• 15:08
SPEAKER_01: Baron Park, the Bad News Bears, yeah.
• 15:11
  SPEAKER_01: 2019.
• 15:14
SPEAKER_01: I don't know what that adds to it, but I think I'm gonna need that.
• 15:19
  SPEAKER_01: I don't usually go for expansions, but oh, that's a weight of 2.09, so it's better.
• 15:32
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you bring your thinking thinking brain.
• 15:36
SPEAKER_00: So the so the hardest thing about this you're saying, Clay, is is setting it up and actually getting it to the table because of that setup.
• 15:43
  unknown: Yeah.
• 15:43
SPEAKER_00: Let me ask you a question.
• 15:45
SPEAKER_00: Is setting up the games for the group always your responsibility?
• 15:51
SPEAKER_01: Oh, 3,000% of the time, yes.
• 15:55
  SPEAKER_01: Yes.
• 15:57
SPEAKER_00: I love playing games with other gamers because you start setting up and if they know the game, they just start putting things out.
• 16:06
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 16:06
  SPEAKER_01: Oh man, that's that's a but that's talking dirty to me.
• 16:11
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 16:13
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 16:14
SPEAKER_00: I'm in the same boat.
• 16:15
SPEAKER_00: I'm always the one sitting up, packing it up.
• 16:17
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 16:18
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 16:19
SPEAKER_01: So any anytime I, you know, when you're that person, you start to really appreciate games that you can get set up quick and that you can teach quick.
• 16:29
SPEAKER_01: And that can get because you know, it's never it's never a fun time when people are standing there watching you set up a game for 30 minutes and they're starting to their eyes are glazing over.
• 16:39
SPEAKER_01: You know, you're like, go somewhere else, let me finish this.
• 16:42
  SPEAKER_01: I'm I come back in a minute.
• 16:44
SPEAKER_00: Go eat some snacks and I'll call you and it's ready.
• 16:47
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know you I've only got you for 30 minutes, so please don't start the clock now.
• 16:52
SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, but for Baron Park, Phil Walker Harding.
• 16:57
SPEAKER_01: I I I liked patchwork, it has like been a two-player go-to for me and my wife.
• 17:05
SPEAKER_01: And I had been looking for yeah, I had been looking for uh a polyomino game that that was uh higher than two players, yeah.
• 17:17
  SPEAKER_01: A big old loser.
• 17:19
SPEAKER_01: Um that was a higher player count game that I could play, and this has filled that spot, and I, you know, there's certainly plenty of other games out there that utilize these weird shaped pieces.
• 17:34
SPEAKER_00: And I've played patchwork like three times and I hate it.
• 17:39
  SPEAKER_01: You hate it.
• 17:40
  SPEAKER_00: I hate patchwork.
• 17:42
SPEAKER_01: What do you hate about patchwork?
• 17:45
SPEAKER_00: Just I don't think I've ever scored more than like four points.
• 17:50
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, you scored positive?
• 17:53
  SPEAKER_01: Excuse me?
• 17:54
SPEAKER_01: You you were in the positive?
• 17:57
SPEAKER_01: The fact that you can go into the negatives is the last time I played with my wife, I was like at negative 20.
• 18:04
  SPEAKER_01: It was so rare.
• 18:05
  SPEAKER_01: Really?
• 18:05
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
• 18:06
SPEAKER_00: Just collecting the buttons and then getting the free turns.
• 18:10
SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's it's way more difficult than it needs to be.
• 18:14
  SPEAKER_01: It's the button economy.
• 18:16
SPEAKER_01: You gotta get your button economy.
• 18:18
SPEAKER_01: It's an engine builder, Sam.
• 18:19
  SPEAKER_01: Just like Catan.
• 18:21
  SPEAKER_00: Convince me.
• 18:22
SPEAKER_01: Yes, I'm gonna convince you patchwork is good.
• 18:25
SPEAKER_01: I have to play freaking Catan.
• 18:28
SPEAKER_01: You do, you do, but anyway, what we can agree on, since we disagree on many things, is that Baron Park is a sweet little game that I think everybody should have, honestly.
• 18:39
SPEAKER_00: What's what is what is the eight plus ages eight plus?
• 18:43
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what does the community say?
• 18:45
  SPEAKER_00: Six plus six plus.
• 18:46
SPEAKER_00: I'd agree with six plus, yeah, yeah.
• 18:49
SPEAKER_01: You can definitely rock Baron Park with a six-year-old.
