- 2:14Speaker 1: am ready for tonight. I have a new author and
- 2:19Speaker 1: a new book. So y'all know, go ahead and get
- 2:22Speaker 1: your pens, your papers, everything you need so you can
- 2:26Speaker 1: write this one down and this one perfect time. That's
- 2:31Speaker 1: all I'm gonna say. She's gonna tell you why. It's
- 2:34Speaker 1: perfect time, perfect timing for this one. Okay. But tonight
- 2:37Speaker 1: we're bringing up the author of Shapes, author Howard. Come
- 2:43Speaker 1: on up, girly, how are you hi? Thank you for
- 2:47Speaker 1: having me, thank you for joining us tonight. So before
- 2:53Speaker 1: we go any further, tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Hello.
- 3:00Speaker 4: I'm Shabrianne Howard.
- 3:02Speaker 3: I am a thirty five year old author, filmmaker, photographer,
- 3:09Speaker 3: graphic designer. Uh Sickle Cell Advocate September Sickle Cel Awareness Month.
- 3:20Speaker 4: And also mental health advocate.
- 3:24Speaker 1: So now you goutys see why I said this book
- 3:26Speaker 1: is like right on time. Oh y'all still don't know? Yeah, Okay,
- 3:31Speaker 1: we're gonna take this a little step further, but y'all
- 3:33Speaker 1: gonna have to stay tuned. So out of all of
- 3:38Speaker 1: those things you just named, which one is the most
- 3:42Speaker 1: important to you?
- 3:44Speaker 5: And why.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I would It's a dual answer, but all in all,
- 3:57Speaker 3: I mean, it still goes back to advocacy. My sickle
- 4:01Speaker 3: cell and mental health advocacy means the most to me.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I feel like that's my true passion, and I feel
- 4:07Speaker 3: like everything else that I do is gifts and tools
- 4:14Speaker 3: that enables me to relate to others and to help
- 4:19Speaker 3: bring more awareness and education about sickle cell, about you know,
- 4:25Speaker 3: kidney disease, about mental health.
- 4:28Speaker 1: So yeah, so you guys, this month is National Sickle
- 4:35Speaker 1: Cell Awareness Month. Okay, I want to ask you what
- 4:41Speaker 1: does that mean to you?
- 4:48Speaker 4: Well, it means work.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Because a lot of people tend to want to know
- 4:58Speaker 3: more during this month more than any other month. So
- 5:03Speaker 3: because I'm an advocate, I tried to find different ways
- 5:08Speaker 3: to bring more education, bring more unity and collaboration in
- 5:16Speaker 3: my community.
- 5:17Speaker 4: So for me, it means.
- 5:21Speaker 3: I'm going to be having panel discussions that I've put
- 5:25Speaker 3: together and I'm hosting. It means that I'm going to
- 5:29Speaker 3: be publishing my issue too to my Simple Cell magazine.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Later this month.
- 5:38Speaker 3: So it just means that there is a lot to
- 5:42Speaker 3: do for a little bit of time, but I try
- 5:46Speaker 3: to make it happen.
- 5:50Speaker 1: So on this screen, you guys see this beautiful book
- 5:55Speaker 1: cover sheets. Now look at the hearts and think about
- 6:04Speaker 1: what we just said. Wow, missus Howard tells us a
- 6:08Speaker 1: little bit about this story.
- 6:12Speaker 4: All right.
- 6:13Speaker 3: So Shapes, by the way, I actually designed that cover myself,
- 6:17Speaker 3: so I'm very proud of it. Yes, Shapes is a
- 6:24Speaker 3: sickle soul love story to a fiction novel, and it's
- 6:30Speaker 3: about four couples, eight main characters who all have sickle
- 6:39Speaker 3: cell some type of sickle cell, and it just covers
- 6:44Speaker 3: love in every capacity. So it you know, in the book,
- 6:50Speaker 3: there is the main character, Dara, and I'm sorry your
- 6:56Speaker 3: her daughter is Dara, and there she has you know,
- 7:04Speaker 3: like I said, she has a daughter. So it has
- 7:06Speaker 3: parental relationships, it has romantic relationships. She's running away from
- 7:12Speaker 3: an abusive relationship and she ends up finding, you know,
- 7:17Speaker 3: someone unexpectedly and falls in love and unbeknownst to her,
- 7:23Speaker 3: this guy actually has sickle cell too, so he brings
- 7:30Speaker 3: her into this you know, big family almost of just people.
- 7:37Speaker 3: His best friend has sickle cell and you know, or
- 7:41Speaker 3: a couple of his best friends have sickle cell, and
- 7:43Speaker 3: uh their their significant others also have sickle cell.
- 7:50Speaker 4: So it's a very.
- 7:53Speaker 3: You know, rocky love story because it covers again relationships,
- 8:01Speaker 3: it covers siblings, it covers you know, long lost family.
- 8:06Speaker 3: It's so much that it unpacks. That's why it's if
- 8:10Speaker 3: I showed it. It's a very thick book. However, it's
- 8:15Speaker 3: a page turner, it really is, and it and it
- 8:17Speaker 3: goes into so much real issues that sickle cell patients
- 8:23Speaker 3: run into and have. But it's all it is a
- 8:27Speaker 3: fictional story. It's I have characters that I you know,
- 8:34Speaker 3: I use people that I that are in my life
- 8:37Speaker 3: who also have sickle soul as a base for those characters.
- 8:43Speaker 3: And I just kind of did character development into something
- 8:47Speaker 3: just beautiful. And I keep getting hounded and threatened for
- 8:52Speaker 3: a part two, So I guess I did something right.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Because I see there's Uhor and then because ther is
- 9:03Speaker 5: running away from Nate I can tell. And then we
- 9:07Speaker 5: have Drell and Tina, Mika and Charles, yes, Robin and
- 9:15Speaker 5: Chad and am I missing a couple?
- 9:22Speaker 4: Okay, you're just name.
- 9:26Speaker 3: The one mess yes, oh yeah, because Robin wasn't like
- 9:32Speaker 3: a like a.
- 9:35Speaker 4: It was more like a.
- 9:39Speaker 3: You know, she didn't know who to choose that first
- 9:42Speaker 3: type situation and so she was with someone else and yeah,
- 9:47Speaker 3: so and then uh, there's your sister and well her
- 9:54Speaker 3: long long sister that she ended up finding. So it's
- 9:58Speaker 3: like I said, it's a lot of different characters. It's
- 10:01Speaker 3: a complex story, but it's very easy to understand.
- 10:05Speaker 4: It's very relatable. It's something that.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Actually dives into, you know, just what it's like to
- 10:18Speaker 3: have sickle cell, what it's like to try to be
- 10:21Speaker 3: in love and have sickle cell, what it's like to
- 10:25Speaker 3: try to be a parent and have sickle cell, the
- 10:28Speaker 3: mistakes you make, the the way friendships kind of go
- 10:33Speaker 3: from amazing to what is this? You know, it covers
- 10:39Speaker 3: so much that at the end of the day, I'm
- 10:44Speaker 3: this is something I'm truly proud of because I know
- 10:47Speaker 3: there is even though it's a fictional story, there's a
- 10:51Speaker 3: lot of.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Truth to it.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Okay, understandable. So that's an author. How did you how
- 11:04Speaker 1: did you deal with stressful situations with your characters in
- 11:09Speaker 1: this book?
- 11:13Speaker 3: So okay, there's a favorite part of this story where
- 11:19Speaker 3: a lot of people love it because there are times when.
- 11:25Speaker 4: You know, these main characters are.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Victimized in certain ways, but then there are times when
- 11:34Speaker 3: they stand up and so and and and one of
- 11:38Speaker 3: the I can you know one of the.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Parts of the books h.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Geor Tina they go and they take a back to
- 11:47Speaker 3: someone's house and them it's not all violent, but that
- 11:56Speaker 3: was set up to that point. They some people might
- 12:00Speaker 3: say that that character may have deserved it, and.
- 12:04Speaker 1: So I know who it is, Yeah, he deserves just
- 12:13Speaker 1: by the I read he deserved it.
- 12:16Speaker 3: M h oh someone else coming to him that that
- 12:20Speaker 3: they definitely did something, Nate, but it was it was
- 12:26Speaker 3: another character actually who It's just it's a friendship. It's
- 12:32Speaker 3: a friendship that goes really really really sour, you know, jealousy,
- 12:37Speaker 3: envy and things and just doing things to sabotage a
- 12:41Speaker 3: person and just their whole life. So once that came out,
- 12:48Speaker 3: it was just kind of like get out, let's go.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Like what like we righte that down?
- 12:58Speaker 1: Yes, yes, don't ask no questions, getting close to doing
- 13:02Speaker 1: just look forward, you know what I'm saying.
- 13:06Speaker 3: All right, So it's you know, and it's it just
- 13:10Speaker 3: shows that you know, that camaraderie, that sisterhood that you know,
- 13:14Speaker 3: you go through so much, you can you can even
- 13:17Speaker 3: argue and fall out with someone, but that the love
- 13:21Speaker 3: and that relationship is still solid.
- 13:23Speaker 4: So you know, I'm willing to go to jail and
- 13:27Speaker 4: take a charge for you girls.
- 13:30Speaker 1: You know, we all have had or have or will
- 13:35Speaker 1: have that one. Even my ten year old has her
- 13:40Speaker 1: best friend in her phone, y'all. This chick has the
- 13:45Speaker 1: girls naming her phone as my ride of die. Well
- 13:50Speaker 1: you know about that at ten years old. But I've
- 13:53Speaker 1: seen in action, right and I was like, yeah, that's
- 14:00Speaker 1: what y'all.
- 14:03Speaker 4: I'm telling you get like that.
- 14:05Speaker 1: So yes, it does.
- 14:07Speaker 4: It goes, It goes there and back.
- 14:09Speaker 3: It really does. It's a very emotional, very just just
- 14:16Speaker 3: it takes you through all the emotions, through happiness. You
- 14:21Speaker 3: laugh with them, you cry with them, you get mad
- 14:23Speaker 3: with them. You ready, you feel like you went them
- 14:25Speaker 3: with the back, like everything is just like oh okay, story.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Yeah, when you publish this story and you got that
- 14:39Speaker 1: book in your hands, Shapes, and you had your baby
- 14:44Speaker 1: in your hand? How did it feel once you had
- 14:48Speaker 1: that completed project?
- 14:50Speaker 3: It was like nothing I ever could like it was
- 14:55Speaker 3: all It was almost like when I had my own child,
- 14:59Speaker 3: you know, I so almost the same exact way.
- 15:02Speaker 4: It was kind of.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Like because I had been writing since I was seven
- 15:09Speaker 3: years old, So I think I published Shapes. I might
- 15:17Speaker 3: have been thirty one, somewhere around that, and so it's
- 15:24Speaker 3: been a long time coming, you know, it's been a
- 15:26Speaker 3: long time just to have that physical representation of the
- 15:33Speaker 3: hard work, the blood, the sweat, the tears, the times
- 15:35Speaker 3: that I would sit there for hours and hours and
- 15:38Speaker 3: hours writing and so.
- 15:41Speaker 4: It just felt amazing, really did it.
- 15:47Speaker 1: So what is your writing environment?
- 15:50Speaker 4: Like?
- 15:50Speaker 1: I know some authors say they go sit in their cars.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Some authors say I have to sit in a quiet place.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Some authors say they have to listen to certain music.
- 16:00Speaker 1: But what is your writing space? How does it layout?
- 16:07Speaker 3: I think it just depends. My perfect Like writing moment
- 16:14Speaker 3: would be at the beach. I love writing at the beach. Yeah,
- 16:19Speaker 3: like the waves, the water, or give me a lake,
- 16:23Speaker 3: give me something that's just quiet and secluded and I
- 16:26Speaker 3: could just sit there and write and I could just
- 16:28Speaker 3: hear the water.
- 16:30Speaker 4: That is perfect, that is literally like almost heaven.
- 16:35Speaker 3: So that but like the typical writing for me would
- 16:40Speaker 3: be at a desk it's silent, or I could be
- 16:44Speaker 3: listening to music. Sometimes I listen to music depending on
- 16:47Speaker 3: like the mood the characters are in. So it helps
- 16:52Speaker 3: me to kind of, you know, bring that out a
- 16:55Speaker 3: little bit more. So as long as I have some
- 17:00Speaker 3: music and a desk, ard table.
- 17:06Speaker 1: And a pin.
- 17:08Speaker 4: I like physically writing it out first and then I
- 17:11Speaker 4: type it. That's just how I've always been. So yeah,
- 17:15Speaker 4: that's pretty much my whole.
- 17:18Speaker 1: That's what I do. So you like to physically write
- 17:21Speaker 1: it first. So when you go back and type what
- 17:24Speaker 1: you wrote, are you sometimes shocked of what you wrote?
- 17:29Speaker 1: You'd be like, did I ever come over you?
- 17:33Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 17:34Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, because sometimes I'm like, how did I even?
- 17:38Speaker 3: Because sometimes I challenge myself, Like I'll have an idea
- 17:44Speaker 3: and I'm like, I wonder if I can do that,
- 17:46Speaker 3: and where could ill like, where could I take my
- 17:49Speaker 3: imagination in this part of the story, And so I'll
- 17:53Speaker 3: just literally lose myself in the story and by the
- 17:57Speaker 3: time I'm going back to type it out and i'm
- 17:59Speaker 3: reading it, I'm like, wow, whoa, this is amazing that
- 18:05Speaker 3: what is okay?
- 18:07Speaker 1: I can see that. So your cover, let's go back
- 18:11Speaker 1: to this cover. Big congrats in designing it yourself, love it.
- 18:20Speaker 1: How did you come out? How did you come up
- 18:22Speaker 1: with the idea of your actual cover?
- 18:25Speaker 3: So, as you can see, they're actually sickle cells. The hearts,
- 18:31Speaker 3: the top of the hearts are sickle cells. So I
- 18:36Speaker 3: wanted to incorporate.
- 18:40Speaker 1: The shape.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Everything is about the shape of what sickle cel kind
- 18:45Speaker 3: of causes. You know, it's a ripple effect. So I
- 18:53Speaker 3: took you know, the shape of you know, ourselves, the
- 18:59Speaker 3: people who have to sell, and I put it into
- 19:01Speaker 3: those hearts because we do have a very unique way
- 19:06Speaker 3: of loving and we love people very very, very very deeply.
- 19:10Speaker 3: So I just kind of wanted to put that into
- 19:14Speaker 3: a visual form. I feel like I did an okay job,
- 19:19Speaker 3: you did do it.
- 19:21Speaker 1: You didn't do it, Okay, you did a great job.
- 19:23Speaker 1: You did a great job. So remember backstage, I told
- 19:29Speaker 1: you I had those fun questions. Yes, I remember, Are
- 19:34Speaker 1: you ready for them?
- 19:36Speaker 4: I'm ready?
- 19:38Speaker 1: All right? All right here if we go, let's talk
- 19:42Speaker 1: about Robin and Chat. So now we miss filmmaker, we
- 19:50Speaker 1: have to make this film about the book stars Shapes.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I'm sorry, but we need to get some stars to
- 19:55Speaker 1: play in Shapes. So, first question, who would play Robin
- 20:05Speaker 1: if Robin was an R and B diva? And why
- 20:09Speaker 1: did you choose that person?
- 20:13Speaker 5: Mmm?
- 20:14Speaker 4: That's a good question.
- 20:17Speaker 3: So fun fact, before I published this book, I put
- 20:21Speaker 3: it out on What Path first, and the way what
- 20:25Speaker 3: Path works is you can use actual pictures, right, and
- 20:29Speaker 3: so what I did was I actually used sickle Cell
- 20:34Speaker 3: Warriors are different people that I knew.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Who were into you know, music and stuff like that.
- 20:44Speaker 1: And so.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Robin, although you know you're asking me like who famous
- 20:52Speaker 3: would I choose? I probably would still choose the person
- 20:55Speaker 3: that I asked to use her photos because she's actually
- 20:59Speaker 3: she has to so she's a model, she's an actress,
- 21:04Speaker 3: and she's very beautiful. Her name is Marlene Ross and
- 21:08Speaker 3: she is like gorgeous, and every time I see Robin,
- 21:13Speaker 3: I just see her because that's who I used for those.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Yeah, well she is pretty yeah. Okay, So now who
- 21:30Speaker 1: would play Chad?
- 21:32Speaker 2: Oh?
- 21:34Speaker 3: Chad? Mmm, I think Chad. I'm trying to think of
- 21:49Speaker 3: someone younger because I did use Feeley and Eko he's
- 21:58Speaker 3: a rapper. No, that's not Chad. I'm sorry, but uh, Chad,
- 22:04Speaker 3: I think I would use like, what is his name?
- 22:09Speaker 3: Lance Gross? I would use something like all right, yes,
- 22:17Speaker 3: his name. That's why it's like leaving me.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Uh what did he playing? Maybe I can help you out.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Okay, he plays in he plays in pe Valley. Uh,
- 22:35Speaker 3: the one that was security guard. Oh lord Jesus, I
- 22:44Speaker 3: know what you're talking about.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Yeah, something like that.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Who was his name? Okay? His name is Tyler?
- 23:00Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 23:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Oh, I'm I'm sorry. I'm still mad at
- 23:08Speaker 1: p Valley because we've waited on season three for how
- 23:11Speaker 1: long since COVID the Valley been not dried up by now? Okay,
- 23:19Speaker 1: let's go, let's go, let's go. It's like, come on.
- 23:23Speaker 1: As matter of fact, it ended on his storyline because
- 23:27Speaker 1: he got m.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Come on, like, you can't leave us off like that
- 23:34Speaker 4: on all the.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Do that that's just wrong and murder and that's just
- 23:43Speaker 1: focus trees focus.
- 23:47Speaker 4: Like that, because that's why I do.
- 23:48Speaker 3: I was like, I couldn't think of his name, and
- 23:50Speaker 3: I'm like, I don't I start going off into Yeah,
- 23:57Speaker 3: so we got another question from the high Okay, I
- 24:02Speaker 3: have lifetime on the line. They love the book, they
- 24:08Speaker 3: love the way you turn the book into a movie,
- 24:11Speaker 3: So they would like to do a bio pic on you.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Who would you give the honor of playing you? And why?
- 24:24Speaker 3: Well, I would have to say I would just say
- 24:27Speaker 3: Taraji because I love her so much, like so so much.
- 24:30Speaker 4: I've always wanted to work with tarajis And so I know.
- 24:35Speaker 3: If she's older, but she's so she has if she can,
- 24:39Speaker 3: you know, look younger, she looks the same for when
- 24:43Speaker 3: she played the baby Boy. So it was just because
- 24:48Speaker 3: I know she knows how to capture emotions and go
- 24:51Speaker 3: there and really like lose herself in the role but
- 24:58Speaker 3: still capture the sense of what she's make me capture.
- 25:03Speaker 3: So I think that would be my first choice for
- 25:07Speaker 3: like the older me. Okay, all right, we'll see see
- 25:13Speaker 3: my heart that the questions weren't that bad for they no.
- 25:18Speaker 4: Not at all, not at all.
- 25:22Speaker 1: So we are coming. We're coming to the end of
- 25:25Speaker 1: our show, and we would like to know how we
- 25:28Speaker 1: can follow you on all your social media's. We have
- 25:32Speaker 1: the information scrolling at the bottom screen, but can you
- 25:35Speaker 1: tell us like anything you have coming out book signings?
- 25:42Speaker 1: You say you're you're for the.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Filmmaker.
- 25:49Speaker 1: There you go, and I can never say the words correctly.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Can you tell us anything you want us to know?
- 25:55Speaker 1: Just give us the rundown.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Sure, Yes, I'm shavery on Howard on most of social
- 26:02Speaker 3: media or Shapeyon the Advocate. You can also find me
- 26:08Speaker 3: on shape heyndadvocate dot com. I'm also on TikTok under
- 26:14Speaker 3: chef Shape made it because I'm also a chef, I
- 26:16Speaker 3: do a lot.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Listen.
- 26:19Speaker 3: So what I have coming up is I'm starting to
- 26:23Speaker 3: do Impact Thursdays, which will be a live panel discussion
- 26:29Speaker 3: about just the impact of sickle cell advocacy and you
- 26:36Speaker 3: know where we are, where we're going, and where we
- 26:41Speaker 3: need to be basically. So I'm so excited about that.
- 26:45Speaker 3: I have a beautiful lineup of people of wonderful, amazing
- 26:50Speaker 3: advocates who if I started naming who I have, it's
- 26:56Speaker 3: like crazy to me. And I also have, as I
- 27:02Speaker 3: said it before, I have a magazine coming out issue too,
- 27:06Speaker 3: which is this is the first issue here, just show it.
- 27:09Speaker 1: A little bit.
- 27:11Speaker 4: So it's a Sickle Cell Singed magazine. And so issue
- 27:19Speaker 4: two will be out.
