- 1:05Hello, and welcome to the Arisen with God podcast.
- 1:08I'm your host, Tamara K.
- 1:09Anderson, and joining me today is the amazing Amy Johnson.
- 1:14Amy is a wife, mom, grandma, and a busy women's ministry leader who has stood on the front lines of battling mental strongholds.
- 1:24And she is here to share her deep and practical wisdom with us today as we talk about what are the strongholds in spiritual warfare.
- 1:33Here's our layout for today's episode.
- 1:36First, we're going to talk about the ancient military blueprint, what Paul actually meant when he named strongholds in second Corinthians.
- 1:46Second, we're going to unmask the chinks in the armor.
- 1:50Amy's going to share her vulnerable story of identifying the enemy's custom lies in her marriage and relationships.
- 1:58Third, we're going to talk about bossing your brain with the sword, and we're going to give practical ways to change the mental scenery and pull down false arguments.
- 2:09All right, my friends, let's start off by grounding ourselves in the foundational verse for this episode found in Second Corinthians, chapter 10, 4, 5, where the apostle Paul writes, for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but
- 2:24mighty through God.
- 2:27To the pulling down of strongholds, casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity and every thought to the obedience of Christ.
- 2:44To understand what Paul is saying here, we have to look at the ancient world.
- 2:49In Paul's day, a stronghold was a massive, heavily fortified stone city or tower built high on a hill.
- 2:58When an invading army attacked, soldiers would retreat inside these thick stone walls where they were completely set safe from the enemy's arrows and could launch counter strikes.
- 3:12Paul uses this military imagery to teach us that spiritual strongholds are deeply entrenched fortresses.
- 3:21Often built inside our minds out of toxic thought patterns, maybe false arguments and lies.
- 3:29The enemy constructs these walls to trap you and me inside a loop of fear or unworthiness, making us feel complet, locked away from God's truth.
- 3:41Let's listen as Amy shares how the adversary tried to build a personal stronghold around her mind and marriage.
- 3:50Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, he does.
- 3:54He absolutely has strongholds.
- 3:56And he knows my chinks in my armor when I am under severe attack and I don't recognize it, usually what happens is I can't breathe.
- 4:07It goes to my lungs very first.
- 4:10And so I absolutely.
- 4:12He has chinks.
- 4:13Also, Wendy, who we know on this podcast a lot, Wende, she one day said to me, most people believe they're either lovable and incapable or capable and unlovable.
- 4:28And I was like, oh, I know which one I am.
- 4:31I'm absolutely capable.
- 4:34And he.
- 4:35And Satan has used that against me.
- 4:38Not the capable so much, except the pride part, which is a whole other issue.
- 4:43But he uses the unlovable in my marriage all the time.
- 4:50And so I often hear in my mind, he did that because he doesn't love you, referring to my husband.
- 4:58He did that because he doesn't love you.
- 5:00And now we have been so open with it.
- 5:03Now we've been married 32 and a half years.
- 5:08Yay, me.
- 5:09That was right?
- 5:0932 and a half years.
- 5:11And now even this morning, my husband said something, and I was like, why are you leaving so early?
- 5:17And he goes, it's just because I don't love you.
- 5:20And now we.
- 5:21Because we know that that's my weakness, right?
- 5:24That's my weak spot.
- 5:27And I actually had to post affirmations and scriptures and things reminding me to not entertain that thought in my head.
- 5:37Isn't it incredible how open Amy and her husband are now that they have identified that lie?
- 5:44When you name the stronghold, the enemy loses his power to secretly control your reactions.
- 5:52But you first just got to realize what it is.
- 5:55And my friends, this isn't the first times God's people had to deal with deeply entrenched fortresses.
- 6:01We see this in the Old Testament during the siege of Jebus in 1st Chronicles 11, verses 4 through 7.
- 6:08The Jebusites lived in a fortress so high and heavily fortified that they mocked King David, claiming he could never bear again.
- 6:17But David didn't rely on human strength, and he relied on God's power, and he conquered the stronghold and turned that exact fortress into the city of David, which later was called Jerusalem.
- 6:32Oh, my friends, no matter how high or fortified a mental lie feels in your head today.
- 6:38It is not stronger than God.
- 6:41But as Amy pointed out, to pull down those walls, we have to actively take and receive the armor of God and as well as the help that he offers us.
- 6:52God is an abundant benefactor.
- 6:54But so often we leave his protection sitting on a shelf because we are busy trying to fix everything in our own strength.
- 7:04I know I'm guilty of it.
- 7:06The blessing is when we receive his helmet of salvation, we gain the capacity to guard our mind and stop letting the enemy dictate our thoughts.
- 7:16Let's head back to Amy as she breaks down how she uses the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit to boss her brain and change the mental scenery.
- 7:27So wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day.
- 7:34And having done all to stand.
- 7:36And he talks about the helmet of salvation.
- 7:40That's a really powerful weapon for me.
- 7:43That's a stronghold for me because I have to protect my brain and I have to boss my brain.
- 7:49And if you know me superficially, you don't really know that about me because I'm capable.
- 7:57See how this works?
- 7:58So verse 17 and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.
- 8:05So my stronghold is immediately to go to a scripture that I love, a quote that I love that reminds me that Satan uses vain imaginations to destroy my peace.
- 8:19And so I post it that same quote, same scripture, same, all the things that will remind me to go to my happy place.
- 8:30Don't automatically assume that they're out to get.
- 8:32He's out to get me.
- 8:33And by the way, it's really bad with my husband, most other people.
- 8:37I don't love you that much.
- 8:38I don't think I.
- 8:39I try.
- 8:40I love people, but you can't get in.
- 8:43That is the chink with my husband specifically, or my kids.
- 8:46And so I just know that you have to find your own helmet of salvation.
- 8:52Maybe it's not your brain, maybe it's something else.
- 8:56Whatever it is, for most people, I find it's the things that replay over and over and over in our head.
- 9:03So for me, I changed.
- 9:05I changed the scenery.
- 9:07Every time I think he doesn't love me and I'm at all serious.
- 9:12I think vain imaginations destroy your peace.
- 9:16I love that phrase.
- 9:18Vain imaginations destroy your peace.
- 9:22Well, my friends, the moment a lie pops into your head, you don't have to pull up a chair and entertain it.
- 9:29You can identify where the enemy's stronghold is in your mind, then you actively attack it with God's word, the Sword of the Spirit as an offensive weapon.
