- 0:53I love talking to you guys. So yeah, I answer every single
- 0:55person. So go give me 4 super dope.
- 0:58Still guys, in this video, I'm talking about how like autism
- 1:01and adulthood kind of increases in support needs or potentially
- 1:04increases in support needs the older you get.
- 1:06And I've kind of got like 3 essential points that we need to
- 1:09look at here when when considering this because this
- 1:11comes a question, you know, you know, can autism get worse the
- 1:15older you get? And.
- 1:16And I guess in, in a nutshell, we need to answer that question
- 1:18but also in a broadened spectrum in more detail.
- 1:21We need to look at the reasons why and potentially how we can
- 1:23help avert some of the issues that may come, you know, later
- 1:27on down the line. Guys, if you are new around here
- 1:29and you've never seen a video before, my name is Dan.
- 1:31I love doing this type of content.
- 1:33I have Asperger's Syndrome. I love explaining things from my
- 1:36point of view, from a nepotistic person's point of view,
- 1:38educating, helping people on the spectrum and helping people who
- 1:41are just learning about it or facilitating people on the
- 1:44spectrum. I love it.
- 1:45So drop me a comment down below. Let me know if you're like a
- 1:48care worker or or a mom or a dad or whatever.
- 1:50Or if you're on the spectrum, I'd love to know who you are.
- 1:52Drop it in the comment down below.
- 1:53I'd read and respond to every single one.
- 1:55That would be super dope. Let's do it.
- 1:58I love green tea. It's just like the best thing
- 2:00ever. Okay.
- 2:00So First things first, we need to clarify something and this is
- 2:03a numero Uno things we need to clarify.
- 2:05People often think that autism or Asperger syndrome, whatever
- 2:09going to call it, only impacts children and you grow out of it,
- 2:11right? Which is makes it an exclusive
- 2:14thing for children, which is completely bogus.
- 2:15This is completely just unrealistic.
- 2:17It's not real. That's complete, absolutely
- 2:19nonsense and nonsensical. Information like this still
- 2:21exists and flows about the Internet.
- 2:23I'm sorry. Channels like mine and all my
- 2:25other friends who are making videos on this on the spectrum
- 2:27are helping try and bridge that gap and get new learning out
- 2:29there. So I thought would be an
- 2:31important thing to talk about because I get people ask me
- 2:33quite often, Hey, Dan, you know, does autism get worse all you
- 2:36get, You know, am I going to deteriorate in a different way?
- 2:39You know, is my brain going to just work differently and all
- 2:41this kind of scary, like, I don't know, you know,
- 2:44catastrophic fantasies and all this kind of stuff.
- 2:46And so I wanted to really be frank and talk about the things
- 2:49that I know of that I spoke about my therapist and my health
- 2:52support team and the people who support my needs about the ways
- 2:56that autism may increase in support needs.
- 2:59The older you get in certain factions because of the way the
- 3:02brain works, it's just a natural cycle of the brain.
- 3:04And when you have in your in your diverse condition and a
- 3:07condition that impacts your brain in a certain way, then
- 3:09maybe there's certain assets that may need support later on.
- 3:13So we're going to go through all those right now.
- 3:15But if you want to support me on Patreon, support this channel, I
- 3:18would be forever in your debt. You can hit the link down below
- 3:21to go through to Patreon and the Patreon link is on the screen
- 3:24here as well. And that would just be amazing.
- 3:26I actually have exclusive courses and educational content
- 3:28on Patreon just for Patreon members.
- 3:30Not super dope. OK guys, so number one is the
- 3:33wave of support. Now.
- 3:34I called it the wave of support. I don't even know what the
- 3:37official term for this. I don't know, but I just called
- 3:39it the wave of support. And basically what this means is
- 3:41when an autistic person is a child, they have quite high
- 3:45support needs because everything is brand new.
- 3:47They don't know the world. They they need guidance in it
- 3:50and everything becomes a struggle.
- 3:51There's a lot of stress and pressure on children to kind of
- 3:53find their feet and learn all these things.
- 3:54And it's an overload of information which becomes very
- 3:57apparent right up until you're about 11 years old.
- 3:59You're constantly getting all this information.
- 4:01So you're going to have quite high support needs there.
- 4:03Now when you reach like teenage years and early, I haven't
- 4:06heard, like, you know, I don't know anywhere from like 18 to
- 4:09like 35, you're going to have quite an interesting experience
- 4:12being on the spectrum. You're going to be trying to
- 4:14still learn things at your rate and the way your brain works and
- 4:17those communication issues. But then you're also trying to
- 4:20find your feet as an adult. But you don't have the pressures
- 4:22of like a house or or children or or marriage or or like a
- 4:25mortgage or bills and all this kind of stuff.
- 4:27You kind of just living for the moment a little bit and you're
- 4:30kind of cruising on, you know, you live with your parents,
- 4:33everything is cool. Your parents kind of look after
- 4:35you like they have done, but you're not going to stress no
- 4:37pressures of learning those things.
- 4:39So your support needs kind of go a little bit down there because
- 4:42you become a little bit more independent.
- 4:44And this is a fashion I've seen quite a lot through people on
- 4:47the autism spectrum. And so this point needs to take
- 4:49a little bit of a dip. But as you get older and more
- 4:51things become dependent. Like, you know, trying to find
- 4:54romantic relationships. Trying to keep best friends or
- 4:57to find friendships and keeping friendships alive.
- 4:59And finding a job. Keeping, holding a job down.
- 5:02Making sure you got a place, pay for your bills.
- 5:04Making sure you can, like, you know, pay your mortgage, make
- 5:06making sure your wifes happier, your kids are happier.
- 5:08Well, you know, all of these things become real pressures.
- 5:11And those pressures didn't exist when you're in your teen years,
- 5:14but they're quite similar to what they were when you were a
- 5:15kid. So those pressures then become
- 5:18quite difficult. And the older you get the cost,
- 5:20the more the more strain it is on your your mental health, your
- 5:25physical health, all things that come into any human being.
- 5:28So this is the wave of support shows that potentially there may
- 5:32be support that you need later on in life because the older you
- 5:36get, you're going to have more things that you'll need to help
- 5:39with, especially like medical can conditions that may crop up
- 5:42because the older we get, our bodies are never going to stay
- 5:44in forever and all that stuff. So there are things that will
- 5:47help increase the support needs for someone on the autism
- 5:50spectrum. But this is something to think
- 5:51about and maybe we should plan ahead and try to plan now for
- 5:54all those strains and pressures and maybe look at what support
- 5:56needs that are before we get to that point.
- 5:58So we're not just kind of like completely incapacitated by the
- 6:01fact that we're overwhelmed with all this pressure and we have
- 6:04nothing to relate to okay. So #2 is the memory, right?
- 6:08So it's no see that people in the autism spectrum have bad
- 6:13short term memory or short term memory loss.
- 6:15Now I did a video all about this.
- 6:16I'll try and link it in a card above here and on the end screen
- 6:19and in a pin comment down below. But I just wanted to kind of
- 6:22briefly talk about I'm not going to go into the memory part.
- 6:24I'm talking about how this could increase your support needs The
- 6:26older you get. Now, you know, as memory is
- 6:28already an issue, the older you get, memory is something that
- 6:31kind of decreases in quality because of the age of the brain
- 6:35and the brain kind of starts slowing down and there's all
- 6:38kinds of medical complications that can come into play with
- 6:40your brain and mental health as you become older, as your brain
- 6:43tries to access memories and stuff.
- 6:45So these things may increase. So short term memory loss may
- 6:48become a bigger issue the older you get.
- 6:49I'm not saying it's going to, I'm just saying that it is a
- 6:51potential, right. So for that you may need support
- 6:54in the area with short term memory loss.
- 6:55Like you know, you might need visual age, you might need kind
- 6:57of like a reminder guide. You might need digital
- 6:59technology or digital assistants like Alexis or Google's or
- 7:01whatever. You know, those things may
- 7:03become apparent and may become way more valuable in your life
- 7:05because those things will be able to support you with short
- 7:08term memory loss like the older you get.
- 7:10And I think that is something very interesting and we should
- 7:12really think about that and and and I obviously think about
- 7:15daily. So I'm trying my best to you
- 7:16know jump on it as as as you know one would and and kind of
- 7:20be a bit proactive and I think we should all take that kind of
- 7:23on board and think well maybe you know my memory is not to
- 7:25stay really, really spring forever maybe.
- 7:27So why don't I try and think ahead of the game Okay.
- 7:30So #3 is the executive function. Like everybody knows that you
- 7:35know social and executive functions and and life skills
- 7:39and all those skills that come with executive function are
- 7:41difficult people on the spectrum.
- 7:42You know, from making friends to doing the washing to cooking
- 7:46food to to knowing how to do your shopping and your laundry
- 7:48and all that kind of stuff. Like all of those things are
- 7:51quite complex and the the process of these can be a
- 7:54constant work in progress and there's nothing wrong with that.
- 7:57But the older you get the more kind of lapse this will become
- 8:00because you become tired and weaker as you get older, you
- 8:04know, especially into like you know the 70s and 80s years.
- 8:07And so those, those needs, those, those those executive
- 8:10functions and those life skills and those social skills may
- 8:12start to kind of drop out of importance because you're quite
- 8:16tired and you're just trying to take care of your health.
- 8:17And you know, all of these things may come into play and
- 8:20that becomes an issue and that becomes something that
- 8:22potentially would need extra support and support from
- 8:25somewhere else or a third party support.
- 8:26And This is why growing old on the spectrum could potentially
- 8:30get worse as you get older or may increase in support needs.
- 8:33And I think that this is something we should definitely
- 8:35think about. It's something scary.
- 8:36It's just a factor of life. And I think life is a beautiful
- 8:38thing. And I think that, you know,
- 8:40having a grand old age is a fantastic thing, but we just got
- 8:42to take care of ourselves and have that little bit.
- 8:44OK. I'm going to plan for my future,
- 8:45just like we do with pensions and savings and stuff.
- 8:47We plan for your future. You plan for your retirement.
- 8:49You plan for all those things that you want to make sure that
- 8:51you're enjoying life no matter how old you are.
- 8:53And with that, guys, I just want to say that you guys are awesome
- 8:55and I love each and everyone of you.
- 8:57So if you think this video can help, please share it on
- 9:00Facebook and Twitter, Give this video a thumbs up, subscribe if
- 9:02you haven't, and I'll see you next time.
- 9:04Guys, Peace.
