- 0:19Welcome back. We have some weird news.
- 0:21Not really unexpected, though. Today we have some news about
- 0:25the Artemis program being having a little bit of a delay.
- 0:28Sorry, I got to move my camera down a little bit so you can get
- 0:30a better view. But the artist program, when it
- 0:33started, the timelines were ridiculous.
- 0:36I don't know. If you think about it, to get
- 0:38all this stuff done in such a short amount of time is really,
- 0:45I would say more than expected that there's a delay.
- 0:50But it was ridiculous that they thought they were going to be
- 0:54able to make a make a giant rocket.
- 0:57The SLS works pretty good. We see.
- 0:59We saw that Artemis One SLS works pretty good.
- 1:02Artemis 2, they're gonna send people around the moon and back.
- 1:05But they also, these are all new systems except for the the
- 1:08engines from the space shuttle from the shuttle era.
- 1:12So everything else, pretty new stuff.
- 1:17So they had a few years to build this stuff, a couple years to
- 1:20build it, and they want to. They wanted to lay it a little
- 1:26bit, which I understand because the HLS Starship hasn't even
- 1:31flown to orbit and made it all the way around yet.
- 1:35The first two test flights blew up mid flight, big Starship fan.
- 1:39But that's just what happened. It's an extremely experimental
- 1:43spacecraft right now. They've been working on it
- 1:46forever. So we know that the Starship is
- 1:50in a phase where it might make it on launch #3 to orbit and
- 1:55also make it all the way around to the coast of Hawaii, which
- 1:59would be insanely cool, very cool.
- 2:03But what's the what's the timeline on that?
- 2:07We. Don't exactly know.
- 2:10We don't exactly know. Elon and SpaceX don't even know.
- 2:13They don't know when it's gonna make it around.
- 2:16I wish more people would be more logical about things like this,
- 2:25because as much as I love SpaceX and I want Starship to succeed,
- 2:28it's and this isn't just about Starship.
- 2:30There's also a Boeing. But the things that we can see
- 2:33are Starship, and it's not the place where I could send people
- 2:37anywhere near the moon. At this point.
- 2:39Don't even put anybody near the Starship.
- 2:42It's in a good spot. Starships in a really good spot.
- 2:46For the second flight, they did fantastic.
- 2:50Flight 3 will probably be way better than Flight 2 in one, but
- 2:54they you can't put people on that thing yet.
- 2:56And I know they're going to transfer them while they're in
- 2:58space, but you just can't do it. It's not safe yet.
- 3:02So it's going to take them a while for them to figure that
- 3:04out. It's going to take them a while
- 3:05to figure out some other delays that are happening.
- 3:08There's a Boeing delay that's happening.
- 3:10So Artemis 2 is going to probably be pushed back a year.
- 3:15Maybe they were talking months, but maybe a year, maybe two.
- 3:18There was some battery issues, batteries during vibration tests
- 3:23that have been leaked, batteries will need to be replaced.
- 3:27So that's in the Orion capsule. So that's the crew capsule that
- 3:30people will be using to transfer to the Starship so they can go
- 3:35to the surface of the moon. So the Artemis 2 mission, they
- 3:39can't use that system right now because it needs to be replaced.
- 3:42Those batteries need to be replaced.
- 3:45Could be months for that replacement, but they have to go
- 3:48through rigorous testing of those batteries and rigorous
- 3:51testing of the Orion capsule when they put the batteries in.
- 3:54Because it's not like they just put a bat.
- 3:55Like when you put a battery in your car, if you've ever done
- 3:57that, you just unattach the positive and the negative.
- 4:01Take out the old battery. Of course your car's off when
- 4:05you do this. Put your new battery in, put
- 4:07those things back on, connect it back together and then your car
- 4:11will probably start up the first time.
- 4:12And if not, you give it like a couple seconds.
- 4:14You start it up again and your car works fine, everything's
- 4:16great. This is a moon capsule that has
- 4:21100,000 parts in it, and this has to keep people alive off
- 4:27world, going to the moon, replacing batteries.
- 4:31Super important. And they have to do rigorous
- 4:33testing. Artemis 3, which is planned for
- 4:36the first mission to land on the moon which would be 2025 using
- 4:43Starship probably gonna get pushed back because SpaceX is
- 4:47taking longer than expected to get some of those milestones
- 4:53hit. So we're gonna, we're gonna tune
- 4:54into NASA's broadcast here in a minute.
- 4:56But I want to make sure that we're covering a few things
- 5:00before we get into that because kind of have to be ready.
- 5:03We have to be ready for this. I got to pull this up for you
- 5:06too. If you have any questions, let

- 5:10the chat. And NASA's going to be starting
- 5:12at about 8 1/2 minutes, 8 1/2 minutes for NASA.
- 5:16So yeah, let me know what you guys said.
- 5:18Game over, said David Redfern. No, they're just going to push
- 5:23it back a little bit. In the Space Flight, things are
- 5:27delayed all the time, a couple months to a year.
- 5:30Space Flight is literally the hardest thing that people do.
- 5:34It's literally the hardest thing because people believe the
- 5:37Earth. Like, you got to be good at what
- 5:40you do and you got to make sure that everyone is safe.
- 5:43If you think about it in that context, like you're going to
- 5:45literally leave the world, our Earth, and go to space, you have
- 5:51to make these systems absolutely perfect.
- 5:54Nobody can be hurt. Nobody, nothing can be damaged.
- 5:57Anything that goes wrong during these flights, it's absolutely,
- 6:02it absolutely has to go 100% perfectly.
- 6:05So these batteries from Boeing, too bad.
- 6:08I think they're two batteries. They're they've been working on
- 6:13this for a while. But the Boeing capsule, the
- 6:15Orion capsule, these batteries, they need to be replaced, could
- 6:18take months. NASA senior officials have been
- 6:21bowling plans to move the inaugural Artemis astronaut
- 6:23landing to the 4th mission too. So Artemis 3 was going to be
- 6:27when people board the Starship for the first time, and then
- 6:31Artemis 4, now they may do another dummy mission with a
- 6:36test of all the systems without people in it.
- 6:40So I think that's what's going to happen today.
- 6:41So this is my prediction is that they're going to push back
- 6:45Artemis 2 either months or a year to make sure that all the
- 6:49systems work properly. Artemis 3 will be a full dummy
- 6:53mission, maybe people on board, more than likely people on board
- 6:56the Orion capsule, but the Starship will do a dummy landing
- 7:02on the moon surface without people on it just to make sure
- 7:05it works, and then put people in the Artemis 4 mission because
- 7:10they have to test the Starship. And of course that is one of the
- 7:12milestones that Starship and SpaceX has to have hit is that
- 7:15they have to do a test mission for the Starship to land on the
- 7:19moon in order for them to continue getting contracts for
- 7:21the HLS mission. So they already got the money,
- 7:24but they do have to hit these milestones in order for them to
- 7:27do this. Yeah.
- 7:28So it's going to be, it's going to be a tough one.
- 7:29It's going to be a tough one here.
- 7:31Do they, do they use Duracell or Buddy batteries?
- 7:34Metal rules. I'm not sure what kind of
- 7:36batteries they have in there, but I'm pretty sure it's not
- 7:39Duracell or Energizer Bunny batteries.
- 7:41So the Artemis program works with a bunch of companies to
- 7:46make sure that everything goes well when they're in space.
- 7:50Boeing, Northrop Grumman, SpaceX, Blue Origin as well,
- 7:55ULA. They're working with some of ULA
- 7:57launch systems for some of their machines too.
- 7:59So all of the things that need to go right, need to absolutely
- 8:03go right one link at a time. LLC says what batteries they had
- 8:07for the Moon River or sorry, when do you think the next
- 8:09Starship liftoff will be? I was hoping for middle of
- 8:12January, but I don't think that's going to happen.
- 8:14I think it's going to be early February at the earliest.
- 8:17At the earliest it's probably going to be mid February, maybe
- 8:21late because the stuff they're doing down there with just
- 8:24disassembling a lot of the water towers and things down there, it
- 8:28just it's going to take a little while.
- 8:30Plus we never, we don't know what's happening with the
- 8:32booster at this point. They they've already done tests
- 8:34on the booster and on the ship, but they took the booster back
- 8:37to the high Bay. So they're working on that now,
- 8:42but we don't know what they're doing.
- 8:43We don't know what they found with their data and we don't
- 8:45know how the engines worked or anything like that.
- 8:47So I'm guessing middle February, maybe March it like that's
- 8:54probably no earlier than February, mid February.
- 8:59Jeff Bezos, Blue Origin also making a Lander.
- 9:02Could they swap out the Starship for the Blue Origin Lander if
- 9:07Blue Origin shows that they can do this?
- 9:10SpaceX. If SpaceX just completely fails,
- 9:13if the Starship just doesn't work and then Boeing and oh
- 9:17sorry, Blue Origin sends their Lander to the moon.
- 9:20It's like a ha ha I gotcha and they send their Lander to the
- 9:23moon. SpaceX already got the contract
- 9:25but if it's going to save people's lives cause Starship
- 9:28just doesn't work, NASA will take on because Blue or
- 9:32generator has a contract with NASA for specific missions.
- 9:35But if SpaceX would postpone those first couple Artemis
- 9:40mission, first couple Artemis landing missions then they I
- 9:46don't know what they could do if there's like an some sort of a
- 9:49agreement with them. I'm not sure what it is.
- 9:52I not off the top of my head I'd have to look into it a little
- 9:54bit one link at a time. LLC says smash the like button
- 9:58everyone yeah could you please just do just hit the like
- 10:01button. Let's try to get up to 50 likes
- 10:02real quick. What batteries they had in the
- 10:04Moon River in 1970. Oh, that's up.
- 10:07Those were all custom built batteries at that point.
- 10:09Those are all custom built for the moon.
- 10:12So they don't have like a, they don't have a brand name, they're
- 10:16not Energizer Bunny batteries or anything.
- 10:18NASA will be starting momentarily, so I'm going to set
- 10:21that up so we can have that. But yeah, please let me know and

- 14:02Let's face it, Boeing has been a joke when it comes to space and
- 14:05that capsule. I don't.
- 14:08I wouldn't say they're a joke. I would say it's very difficult.
- 14:15And I'm gonna be devil's advocate for them right now.
- 14:18Because everything is super hard when you do space stuff because
- 14:23you're sending people off the planet.
- 14:24Absolutely, incredibly hard. And these think it's the most
- 14:28difficult engineering feats you could do.
- 14:31So any delays, anything like that, like it's a weird thing to
- 14:35have a new capsule, but there's millions of parts in that thing
- 14:38and if anything goes wrong, I think somebody in chat said if
- 14:41one if one thing can go right, but a million things could go
- 14:45wrong. Yesterday in the chat.
- 14:47So I can't remember who said that, but they were completely
- 14:50right. And like a million things could
- 14:52go wrong in that capsule. And Boeing, as much as we like
- 14:57to see the downfall of companies, and we all click on
- 15:01those videos on YouTube too, don't tell me you don't like the
- 15:04downfall of whatever it is, whatever you're interested in,
- 15:08the downfall of Tony Hawk or the downfall of whatever, it's like,
- 15:12all right, that's tempting. You might click on it every once
- 15:15in a while and there's always that exaggerated history of
- 15:19those things. But Boeing is having a having a
- 15:22moment right now, unfortunately. So a lot of things are going
- 15:27wrong at Boeing. I really hope they do the best
- 15:30things that they can, you know, and make sure that this capsule
- 15:34works properly and these people get there safely.
- 15:36You think every ounce of resources removed from Earth and
- 15:40put on Mars is a waste? Oh, here we go.

- 16:02Good. Afternoon, everyone, and thanks
- 16:03so much for joining us. I'm Faith Mackie with NASA
- 16:06Office of Communications, and we'd like to thank you for
- 16:09joining this call to provide an update on the future of NASA
- 16:12Artemis mission. In addition to NASA
- 16:15Administrator Bill Nelson, NASA participants today will include
- 16:20NASA Associate Administrator Jim Free, Kathy Kerner, our
- 16:24Associate Administrator for the Exploration System Development
- 16:27Mission Directorate at NASA, and Amit Shatriya, our Deputy
- 16:31Associate Administrator for the Moving to Mars Program in NASA's
- 16:35Exploration Systems Development and Mission Director.
- 16:39After brief opening comments from each of our speakers, we
- 16:42will gladly take your questions. The question and answer portion
- 16:45of today's call will include representatives from our
- 16:48industry partners and the European States Agency.

- 17:33And now, I'll open the floor to Administrator Bill Nelson.
- 17:37Hey, everybody. It was a little over a year ago
- 17:41that all of us want Artemis one and then Test one and it was so
- 17:48successful that additional were added in the court.
- 17:56It went further than in a human rated spacecraft and it has that
- 18:01iconic picture that we've all seen where it's taking a selfie
- 18:06photograph of itself. And in the background, 40,000
- 18:11miles away is the mean and further in the background, 270
- 18:17miles away is our planet. Many of the complex mission will
- 18:25return after not people. And eventually tomorrow all came
- 18:31out of what was this test flight And so we named the Artemis
- 18:40Cheetah Green and they are busy training for their mission
- 18:46around the moon that will test the Orion system to support
- 18:51human life in deep space. And again, we go back to the
- 18:56moon in a different way. We go back to the moon this time
- 19:01to a different part of the moon. We also go back to the moon with
- 19:08martial partner and international partner.
- 19:13And by the way, we are down here, Houston, and visited with
- 19:18the tree several times. Yesterday they were telling me
- 19:23they were invited to the Oval Office, were given 15 minutes to
- 19:28visit with the president, and ended up visiting with him for
- 19:32an hour and a half. And I think it's illustrative of
- 19:37what's happening. I saw, for example, as we took
- 19:41the tree last night to the national Championship day and
- 19:46during one of the timeouts they were introduced.
- 19:49The place went nut. Everybody is really excited.
- 19:54We're in a golden era of exploration, and this time we're
- 20:03talking. About the football games to.
- 20:04The meeting in order to be able to work to live to create and to
- 20:14in order eventually we can go to more and the science is going to
- 20:19help us unlock the secret and the formation of our solar
- 20:23system including the secrets of our own planet.
- 20:29We're going to you're in the process back to the moon.
- 20:32We're going to develop new technologies.
- 20:34We're going to develop new propulsion to go to more.
- 20:40So how we go is just as important as what we do.
- 20:47And so this is to put it in the president's term, this is a big
- 20:55deal. We've announced a new partner,
- 20:58Phil, with the UE for Gateway and that's a huge moment for the
- 21:05future of faith exploit. And please, please, Artemis
- 21:15Mission, you're showing the strength of the commercial
- 21:18partners and American Innovation, you're doing
- 21:24something and they're really different in the process of all
- 21:28day as we would find everybody every chair safety is our
- 21:35priority. And to give Artemis be more time
- 21:40to work new the challenges with first time development operation
- 21:46and integration, we're going to give more time on Artemis 2 and
- 21:51three. So what I want to tell you is
- 21:55you're adjusting our schedule to target Artemis 2 for September
- 22:02of 2025 and September of 2026 for Artemis 3, which can send
- 22:12humans for the first time to the lunar South Pole.
- 22:16Artemis Flee remains on track for September 2020, and those
- 22:24challenges are clearly our teams are making incredible progress,
- 22:32and you're going to hear about that shortly.
- 22:35Jim Flee has done an extraordinary job leading NASA
- 22:40to explorate Systems Development Syndrome over the past 2 1/2
- 22:45years and standing up the Moon Mars program.
- 22:51Jim AS is our Associate Director, Associate
- 22:57Administrator have replaced about Cabana who had promised us
- 23:04a year before he retired and we got almost three and out of Bob
- 23:09and he is in his retirement ceremony this weekend.
- 23:15And so Jim is going to hand the reins over to Kathy Kerner and
- 23:21Steve and Program Manager Ahmed. They continue to make good
- 23:27progress. Think back to over 60 years ago
- 23:32when President Kennedy, it's about 20 miles from where we are
- 23:36to Rice Stadium and he made that famous speech.
- 23:40We need to go to the north and do other things, not because
- 23:46it's easy, but because it's poor.
- 23:50And Artemis represents what we can accomplish as a country, as
- 23:56a global coalition, and what we can accomplish when we set our
- 24:01stride and what is hard and what has never been done before.
- 24:08Jim, over to you. Thank you very much, Sir.
- 24:11These early Artemis missions are what we refer to in our Moon to
- 24:15Mars architecture as our human lunar return segment.
- 24:20We're demonstrating the foundational systems, things
- 24:22like Orion and SLS that we need to support the human missions on
- 24:28the surface and a lunar orbit. And as the administrator
- 24:31referenced, these programs reflect our different approach
- 24:35we are taking to extend human presence to the Moon and Mars
- 24:40than what we did previously in Apollo.
- 24:43The Moon may not be different, but our knowledge of the Moon
- 24:45and advancements in technology industry capabilities have
- 24:49changed our approach to exploration, which you can see
- 24:52reflected in all of these programs.
- 24:54I'm going to let Ahmed talk more about the progress and
- 24:58challenges with the schedule leading up to Artemis 2 and
- 25:01three, but I want to emphasize that safety is our number one
- 25:05priority. You've heard it from the
- 25:06administrator today. You've heard it multiple times.
- 25:10And as we prepare to send our friends and colleagues on this
- 25:13mission, we're committed to launching safely as possible and
- 25:18we will launch when we're ready. We learned a great deal during
- 25:22Artemis One and continue to learn the day through the
- 25:26production of. Artemis 234 and all the hardware
- 25:30we have in Flow and we plan to put those lessons.
- 25:34Back into our future mission, and that's what flight tests are
- 25:38all about, as you heard leading up to Artemis One, as we'll talk
- 25:42about for Artemis 2 and Future MIT.
- 25:44Because these are flight tests, developing, testing and learning
- 25:49and improving our knowledges, what we're doing and ensuring
- 25:53that when we do fly, it'd be successful.
- 25:57Damaging the moon to March program office that Amit leads
- 26:01has enabled us to improve our integrated approach across all
- 26:05the programs and a great deal of credit goes to Amit and his team
- 26:08for that work. You heard the administrator talk
- 26:12about our crew. They are incredible, and they've
- 26:14been busy learning about the systems and subsystems they'll
- 26:18be flying. And they and other astronauts
- 26:21across the crew office can continue to monitor the design,
- 26:26production and assembly of all the hardware, giving invaluable
- 26:29input from the operator perspective.
- 26:33That Artemis 2 crew will be the first people to set human eyes
- 26:37on the far side of the moon in more than a century, and I can't
- 26:40imagine all the pictures and recordings that they'll bring
- 26:43back to capture those moments, but also inform our
- 26:46understanding of the moon. The crew is a constant reminder
- 26:51for us of how important it is to remain focused on the work we
- 26:55need to do to ensure their safe return.
- 26:58This is a. Team effort, an international
- 27:00effort that involves our government, our international
- 27:04partners, our industrial partners collaborating to
- 27:07achieve new milestones and human lunar exploration, things that
- 27:11have never been accomplished before and that require us all
- 27:15working together. That's why we have our partners
- 27:19on the line with us today. We are facing challenges both
- 27:24technical and just dealing with going back to the moon, but the
- 27:29Artemis team is solving that. And let me remind you that what
- 27:33we're talking about for these early Artemis missions includes
- 27:37the initial human landing system capability, the crude
- 27:41demonstration of the Starship human Lander, the initial
- 27:44gateway capability, which includes the integrated power
- 27:47and propulsion element along with our habitation and
- 27:50logistics output post that we call Halo.
- 27:54And the more powerful Block 1B configuration for SL, the SLS
- 27:58that can launch true to the moon in Orion along with cargo in a
- 28:02single. Lawn.
- 28:04And for Artemis 3, we must be realistic there as well.
- 28:08We're looking at our the need for propellant transfer, the
- 28:12need for numerous landings. We're looking at our space suits
- 28:17that we're acquiring in a different manner that we've done
- 28:20before and developing the new space suits.
- 28:23Soon we'll add and pressurize Rover from a servant perspective
- 28:27too. All of those.
- 28:29Alone are incredibly large challenge and a really big deal.
- 28:34And I know that Kathy Ahmed, our program managers, will continue
- 28:38to do everything in their power to work closely with our
- 28:41partners, keep all of these on track.
- 28:45So we need all parts of our team focused on performing as
- 28:49efficiently as possible into the highest standards.
- 28:52And as I and others have said and will continue to say launch
- 28:57when we're ready. Let me turn it over to Ahmed to
- 28:59share. Some more of the challenges.
- 29:01That we faced and how we're tracking those down.
- 29:03OK. Thank you, Jim.
- 29:04Thank you, Senator, and thanks to both of you for your
- 29:06leadership. I have a lot to go through, so
- 29:08I'm going to try. First thing I want to say is a
- 29:13huge thanks to all of the our stakeholders and all of our
- 29:17industry partners, international partners that have contributed
- 29:20to the formulation of the Moon to arts program office.
- 29:23The integration efforts that have been put in place by all of
- 29:26them have been tremendous. We really are one team and I
- 29:29think you'll see that in the responses.
- 29:30And also as we go forward, we're one team solving these problems
- 29:34together. We have a really complex flight
- 29:36test campaign that makes up these early mission.
- 29:38As Jim and Senator, we clearly, and it's worth to me to say over
- 29:43and over again, our number one priority is safety.
- 29:46Our number two priority is to make sure we're making
- 29:48comprehensive methodical progress towards our objective.
- 29:51And our #3 priority is to learn from the data we get from our
- 29:54flight test. And I think you'll see that as
- 29:57we're going through we're, we are making that learning
- 30:00impacted the way we So for Artemis 2, So again, the
- 30:07primary, there's a lot there, new capability that's being on
- 30:10ramp for the mission. We have new facilities at KFC to
- 30:15enable rapid turn around for propeller loading.
- 30:18Also for the loading of the crew, for the egress of the
- 30:20crew. For the launch vehicle we have a
- 30:23new abort system that will be activated in an integrated way
- 30:27across the stack. And of course for the spacecraft
- 30:30we have a new life support system and its ability to
- 30:32respond to those aborts and those are all added there of
- 30:35course to support the crew and important to support crew
- 30:38safety, we haven't covered we have.
- 30:40We have two major sources of learning that are warming the
- 30:44way we're developing the Artemis 2 mission.
- 30:46The first of course is from the tremendous amount of data, the
- 30:48engineering data we got from the Artemis one test play and the
- 30:522nd is from the production. Both the components and the
- 30:55assembly level of production that's coming in for the
- 30:58subsequent missions for Artemis 2 and three and beyond.
- 31:01We have hardware inflow coming in for all of those missions.
- 31:04We're not doing these serially. We're doing a concurrent
- 31:07development for a lot of this work And so from the test flight
- 31:10in particular we had two, I would say one major finding that
- 31:14we need a little bit more time to work and that is the
- 31:16performance of the thermal protection system on the
- 31:19spacecraft. On the each field we have an.
- 31:21So the each field itself, the Orion, the performance
- 31:25specification that we levied on that on the vehicle and on that
- 31:29system was met with met with extreme precision.
- 31:33We had a large factor of safety that the bottom line of the
- 31:37spacecraft and our the entry guidance performed almost
- 31:40perfectly. We're able to put the vehicle
- 31:42right on top of our partners in the Navy were able to recover
- 31:45the vehicle very crisply. But what we did see in the
- 31:48performance of the heat shield itself was some unexpected
- 31:51phenomena that we need to make sure we understand perfectly.
- 31:54The lessons of our history is that even though we believe we
- 31:58understand and that our hardware is performing according to
- 32:00requirements we have to be absolutely certain that we
- 32:04understand the integrated performance of that system when
- 32:06there are excursion from that performance.
- 32:09What we saw on the heat shield was again like I said very good
- 32:13performance from a thermal protection standpoint.
- 32:15We did see the off the off nominal recession of some char
- 32:20that came off the heat shield which we were not expecting.
- 32:22Now this heat shield is an ablated material.
- 32:25It is supposed to char, but what it's not what we were not
- 32:27expecting for some pieces of that charge to be liberated from
- 32:31the vehicle And so we need to make sure we to understand the
- 32:34transport and debris transport phenomena that caused that.
- 32:37We have spent the bulk of 2023 investigating that in facilities
- 32:42across the agency as well as with help from the the root
- 32:47cause of that issue And it's going very from our partners as
- 32:51well as our partners across the government.
- 32:53We have taken on a methodical detail campaign to understand
- 32:56this issue, extensive core sampling, testing and data
- 33:00review and that is all of that review is again as I said going
- 33:04quite well. We have to synthesize that data
- 33:07and update the overall thermal, mechanical and material model of
- 33:11that heat shield to make sure that before we attempt re entry
- 33:15from a circular return mission like we'll have from Artemis 2
- 33:19that we're 100% confident that we understand the performance of
- 33:22that heat shield under those conditions.
- 33:24We've been able to replicate the physics and we expected to
- 33:27definitively identify the root cause of this recession of the
- 33:32charm material, hopefully here in the spring.
- 33:35So they mentioned that that was a large sort of learning from
- 33:38Artemis one. We've also learned quite a bit
- 33:40from the acceptance of hardware coming into the flow from
- 33:43subsequent mission. We're planning for one of one of
- 33:46the major one has to do with the life support system.
- 33:50During the acceptance of some components for Artemis 3, we
- 33:54noticed the failure in some motor valve circuitry that's
- 33:57driving valves on the spacecraft itself.
- 33:59This is a common needed. It's a kind of circuit that
- 34:03after investigation did this. These components passed
- 34:07acceptance testing for Artemis 2, but did not pass them for
- 34:10Artemis 3. And so that gave us pause to
- 34:12stop and look at that circuit in a more detailed way.
- 34:15When we examined it, we recognized that there was a
- 34:17design flaw in that circuit, those those valve electronics,
- 34:21many parts of the life support system on the spacecraft, in
- 34:25particular our ability, in particular the CO2 scrubbing.
- 34:29And so once, once we recognize that the design flaw and once we
- 34:34looked at rationale for potentially using the system as
- 34:37it is became very clear to us, it was unacceptable to accept
- 34:40that hardware and we have to replace it in order to guarantee
- 34:43the safety of the crew. The way to replace that hardware
- 34:46given the current configuration with its base craft we're going
- 34:49to have to it is the access to the components.
- 34:53The access to those bays is going to take us quite a bit of
- 34:56quite a bit of time to get to every connector that we touch.
- 35:00As part of that part of that replacement operation will have
- 35:03to be tested after we're done and we'll have to put the
- 35:06vehicle through pull up functional testing afterwards.
- 35:09And we're committed to doing that.
- 35:10We know how to fix it, we just need to make sure we take the
- 35:13time to do it according to the workmanship standard that we
- 35:15expect for a human rated second major finding.
- 35:20We have, as I mentioned before, we have for the first time on
- 35:24this spacecraft we're applying an integrated abort capability.
- 35:27The SLS is a extremely powerful machine and the Orion is ready
- 35:31to fly in deep space. And when you design A capability
- 35:35to separate from the space current from the launch vehicle
- 35:40in the event of a loss of control, that environment during
- 35:43separation is quite severe. We've qualified the entire Orion
- 35:46to survive during those environments.
- 35:49We have, however, it's part of the qualification campaign found
- 35:52a few cases where we believe there could be some the
- 35:56efficiencies and the performance of the electrical system, in
- 35:59particular some of the batteries that we need to make sure we
- 36:01understand how they're enduring those environments.
- 36:04So we're still very early in that investigation.
- 36:06We've not yet developed a forward path.
- 36:08We have multiple parallel options to fix this issue.
- 36:12We also have a lot of options to determine whether or not we
- 36:14believe those environments are accurate.
- 36:16And so we have a lot of testing to do in front of us, but we
- 36:19wanted to make sure we give ourselves the time to do that.
- 36:22And as we mentioned before continuing our note safety
- 36:28subject. So those are the major drivers
- 36:32as I said for the Artemis 2 delay with all every single one
- 36:35of them has to do is either a derivative, A capability that
- 36:39was added for safety or a mandatory fix to make sure that
- 36:42the vehicle's as safe as possible for our crew.
- 36:46So what I will say though is we are making tremendous progress.
- 36:48The Jim and the administrator when he mentioned the crew is
- 36:50deep into training every component of the mission that
- 36:54needs to be at Kennedy with the exception of the core stage
- 36:57which is that Methued is already at the the core stage is
- 37:01actually at a point of maturity that was much further along than
- 37:04what we shifted for Artemis. One, we are going to hold it
- 37:06there. The tended to submit to be ready
- 37:10for this mission, but there's a lot of work that we can do it
- 37:13Masood that's a little bit easier to do there than in the
- 37:16Transparado Kennedy, but we have the booster segments ready to
- 37:19check the upper stage right and we're finishing the validation
- 37:22of the mobile launcher and the rest of the capability.
- 37:25So I'm going to move on the other one.
- 37:27The last thing I'll say about Artemis 2 is that it even though
- 37:30it's we're we're really, we want to fly and we want to apply as
- 37:33safely as we can with the delay. We're going to take advantage of
- 37:36some additional capability and incorporation of lessons learned
- 37:39from Artemis one, including the ability to potentially access
- 37:42the vehicle at the pad during during the launch campaign and
- 37:46during potential weather event. So I'll move on to Artemis 3.
- 37:50For items three, we're adding several capabilities, of course,
- 37:53that's been mentioned by Jim. We're adding a human landing
- 37:55system with a very complex propellant transfer scheme and
- 37:59Earth departure scheme. We're also adding advanced space
- 38:02suits. Each one of these space suits is
- 38:04an individual spacecraft of the crew and we're adding a docking
- 38:08system to Orion and new choreography amongst our launch
- 38:11teams for a dual launch campaign required to make sure that both
- 38:14Orion and the Lander can get to the same point in space had to
- 38:18proceed with the litter landing. So coordination and the
- 38:21choreography of those ground assets as well as in space and
- 38:24other communication asset is a significant coordination
- 38:27challenge. And we're doing everything or we
- 38:29can to add and to add capability to make sure that's accessible.
- 38:33There's extensive integration going on across the system.
- 38:36One of not not. One of these elements, we have
- 38:39all the transportation elements we've been developing, but but
- 38:42with the suits and with the Landers, that's a huge one.
- 38:45Conglomeration of different development activities that have
- 38:47to meet together and not any single one of them is more
- 38:50important than the other. We need them all to be ready and
- 38:53all to be successful in order for that very complicated
- 38:55mission to to come together. So the new schedule for Artemis
- 38:593 aligns with the updated schedule for Artemis 2.
- 39:01It ensures that we can incorporate lessons learned from
- 39:04Artemis 2 into the next into that mission and also
- 39:07acknowledges the very real development challenges that have
- 39:10been experienced by our industry partners.
- 39:12So as I mentioned at the beginning, we have an integrated
- 39:14flight test approach to this capability.
- 39:16So as we add each new mission increases complexity, we have to
- 39:19add tests for new systems. This new schedule will give us
- 39:22the opportunity for our partners to have that additional time and
- 39:26make their refinements to make sure we're as acceptable as
- 39:28possible. CC the fall of twenty 26th of
- 39:32September 2020, sixth time frame.
- 39:34We is still very aggressive and we all but we all need to pay
- 39:38for work with the same degree of urgency and I think it's very
- 39:41important that and our industry partners are 100% committed to
- 39:44this approach. In fact not only are they
- 39:46committed but they would. It also is worth pointing out
- 39:49that some of the issues we found with with the Artemis 2
- 39:52components on the Orion would not have been found.
- 39:54Have we not pushed our partners to deliver the hard work for
- 39:58Artemis 3 and four as we proceeded towards flight.
- 40:00And so all of that production is teaching us as we go.
- 40:04So in but for Artemis 3, even though that fall of 2026 time
- 40:08frame is aggressive. We are European partners.
- 40:10They're going to ship their service module in three months.
- 40:13We have the upper stage for the SLS already delivered the RS25
- 40:17segments. The RS25 engines have already
- 40:19been delivered. We have the booster segments
- 40:21already ready to go. And so we have all of this work
- 40:24coming together. In addition, the tremendous
- 40:26amount of tests that's going on in Bokachika with Spacek and
- 40:30with here in Houston with Axiom. I'll move on quickly to talk
- 40:35about RMS four and five perform. We have several new
- 40:37developments. As Jim mentioned it'll be our
- 40:40first new mission to Gateway. We know we have to launch the
- 40:42integrated power and propulsion element and the Halo.
- 40:45This is the core of Gateway. It will take about 12 months for
- 40:49that PPE Halo Jack to to on a long spiral trajectory head out
- 40:54to the NRHO orbit where we will meet him with the crude flight
- 40:58as planned in September 2028. We we we had previously planned
- 41:02to launch the PPE in Halo in October of 2025.
- 41:05We're now working with our industry partners at Max R
- 41:07Northrop Grumman to review the schedule for when it makes sense
- 41:10to launch STEP before Artemis 4. We believe they have a great
- 41:13path to get us there to support that mission but we are we will
- 41:16be updating that schedule here as well.
- 41:19So we again we're doing what we can to make sure our parties
- 41:21have the time to do the development correctly and
- 41:24safely. Jim also mentioned that Artemis
- 41:264 will incorporate configuration of the Block 1B well how the SLS
- 41:30would be event with the exploration upper stage carrying
- 41:33the first gateway module as a Co manifested pill of the credible
- 41:36I have from East. And Artemis 4 will also be the
- 41:40first mission to host logistics delivery and we have given
- 41:43authority proceed from our partners at SpaceX to develop a
- 41:46logistics capability to deliver cargo to the Gateway space
- 41:49station. I'll finally wrap up with
- 41:54Artemis 5, which to me is the end of our ideally what I
- 41:57consider our responsibility as a test program.
- 42:00We are bringing on a brand new landing system provider.
- 42:03Blue Origin has been a tremendous early partner with
- 42:05us. We intend to announce a provider
- 42:07for Lunar Terrain Vehicle services in the coming months.
- 42:10We'll have new gateway components as a logistics
- 42:12delivery. The administrator pointed out
- 42:14the exciting news of having that of our new partners in the
- 42:17United Arab Emirates that are going to provide an airlock for
- 42:20the core components of Gateway, which after that Artemis 5 and
- 42:23six time frame will complete the core of the Gateway space
- 42:27station. And also finally in the last few
- 42:29months we've been asked, we've asked both of our team and
- 42:31landing system providers Basics and Blue Origin to begin
- 42:34applying the work they're doing on the human rated versions of
- 42:37the landing vehicles to develop a cargo variant that can
- 42:40landlords cargo on the surface which is a tremendous change and
- 42:44in the way we've done lunar exploration in the back.
- 42:47As you can see we have a lot of hardware and flow.
- 42:49I'll save more time for questions here as we go because
- 42:51I've covered a lot of ground here.
- 42:53But with the long term exploration campaign and what
- 42:56that means is that we have, we're working on all these
- 42:58missions essentially simultaneous and we need
- 43:01flexibility in our manifest, we need resilience in our manifest
- 43:04and that is the commitment we have from all of our NASA
- 43:06programs and all of our industry partners we have.
- 43:09It is essential that we make progress on every element of the
- 43:12campaign in order to deliver on the success of these gold.
- 43:15It's also essential that we're prudent in the way we're
- 43:18planning for when these if these developments maybe have more
- 43:21issues so that we're ready to respond in a flexible way to
- 43:25make methodical progress towards our goals.
- 43:26So, but I think that's enough for me at this point.
- 43:29I would like to hand over to my new Buff, Kathy Guerner to talk
- 43:32to to Phillips up here. Thank you, Almet, Jim and
- 43:35Senator. I want to start by thanking Jim
- 43:38Free for his dedication and effort and standing up the
- 43:40Exploration Systems Mission Directorate and the Moon and
- 43:43Mars Program Office. I'm honored to step into this
- 43:45new room and lead our exploration team.
- 43:49Cruise safety is and will remain our number one priority.
- 43:52I want to thank Amit Moon to Mars team for the detailed work
- 43:55that they're doing on each of these issues and managing the
- 43:58integrated risks and schedule across the six Artemis program.
- 44:02As Amit noted, Artemis is a long term exploration campaign using
- 44:06astronauts to conduct science at the moon and prepared for human
- 44:10mission to Mars. It's important that we develop
- 44:13and fly our foundational system that we can safely carry out the
- 44:16Admission the Moon to Mars. Program teams work to identify
- 44:20the flight tests objectives that we must demonstrate on that
- 44:22early Artemis mission. Hide directly to the agency's
- 44:26Moon to Mars objectives and exploration.
- 44:27Approved. It is the next level of detail
- 44:30in implementing our Moon to Mars architecture and will provide
- 44:33strategic guidance for tough decisions.
- 44:36Our resilient mission manifest is essential for something as
- 44:39complex as developing the systems and technologies for
- 44:42long term exploration of the Moon in a manner that
- 44:45prioritizes scientific discovery and benefits for humanity.
- 44:49While Ahmed and his team work on the implementation approach, our
- 44:52broader architecture development work also continued this.
- 44:55Last November, we completed our second architecture concept
- 44:58review where we sat down with the stakeholders across NASA to
- 45:02review our Moon to Mars exploration plan.
- 45:05This most recent review focused on identifying the foundational
- 45:08decision needed for accrued mission to Mars and adding more
- 45:12detail to how we break down our objectives into architectural
- 45:15elements for long term later exploration.
- 45:18In the coming weeks, we will publish updated materials from
- 45:21the last Architecture Concept Review, which includes updates
- 45:25to the Agency's Architecture Definition document and white
- 45:28papers highlighting critical results from the most recent
- 45:30strategic analysis cycle. The Architecture Definition
- 45:34document presents the current state of NASA's human Space
- 45:37Flight architecture and exploration strategy and breaks
- 45:40down the Moon to Mars objectives into functions and use cases
- 45:43that can be implemented through architectural elements.
- 45:46It includes current partnerships, identifies gaps
- 45:49and presents opportunities for future collaboration.
- 45:52As our administrator mentioned earlier, this past Sunday we
- 45:55announced a new partnership with the United Arab Emirates on the
- 45:58airlock for Gateway. I look forward to the future
- 46:01partners that will one day join us and I'm.
- 46:03Very grateful for our. Existing partners, European
- 46:06Space Agency, The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and
- 46:10the Canadian Space Agency. I'm also grateful for our
- 46:13industry partners that have agreed to be on the call today.
- 46:17Whether we're partnering with other space agencies or
- 46:19contracting with industry and academia, we have shared
- 46:23exploration goes things and shared responsibilities.
- 46:27The ambitions of long term exploration of the Moon and Mars
- 46:30are bigger than any one country space agency or company.
- 46:34So when we go together for the benefit of all humanity, Artemis
- 46:38is different from anything humanity has embarked on.
- 46:41Before. We will discover ground breaking
- 46:43science and technology as we learn to live and work and
- 46:46explore in a collaborative and sustained manner.
- 46:49I look forward to working with Amit and the team, including our
- 46:52academic and industry and international partners as we
- 46:55collectively strive to uphold our commitments and prioritize
- 46:58safety and exploration. Ultimately, what we build, test,
- 47:03and discover at the moon will determine the human capacity to
- 47:07explore deed safe for longer periods of time.
- 47:09Setting NASA with our partners on a city path for our next
- 47:13giant leap. Sending the first FM tomorrow.
- 47:16I'd like to thank our NASA leader for their update.

- 47:49So I think we have in our queue. Our first question will come

- 47:56Yes, hi. Probably for Mr. Free with the
- 47:59extra time. Now, are there any thoughts of
- 48:01sending the Artemis 2 crew into lunar orbit, Apollo 8 versus
- 48:06just to fly around? And what's the chance of still
- 48:09horning another myth And in between Artemis going free if
- 48:12the landing systems are not ready?
- 48:13Thank you. And no, the Artemis 2 mission
- 48:18profile is going to remain the same.
- 48:20We're we've set that in place for a variety of reasons.
- 48:23We want that 24 hour orbit around Earth to make sure we can
- 48:27check out the vehicle. We want that.
- 48:29Path to to the moon to be. Captured by gravity and come
- 48:32back. So we build resiliency into the
- 48:34system and have some redundancy there to bring the crew back
- 48:38safely. And no, no thoughts to changing
- 48:41Artemis even 3 as, as we've all said, we're going to learn from
- 48:46these missions. We're going to learn from what
- 48:48happens on Artemis 2. We're planning for Artemis 3 to
- 48:51be that landed mission, but as we say, we're going to take
- 48:54every bit of safety and we'll learn from our the hardware
- 48:59that's developed and as it's flown and decide that from there
- 49:02any changes for the overall part program.
- 49:05But as you heard today, Artemis 3 is still land admission in
- 49:08September 20th. Thank you.
- 49:12I will take the next question from Michael Maidenberg of the
- 49:15Wall Street Journal. Hi.
- 49:19Independent of the issues that you discussed about the Artemis
- 49:232 delay, could you give that just again a couple of specific
- 49:26example examples about the new timeline Artemis 3?
- 49:30If you hadn't. Found the big.
- 49:32Drivers related to Artemis 2, Which would Artemis 3 still need
- 49:36to be pushed back and why? Thanks.
- 49:40Yeah, that's a great question. I think the answer is yes.
- 49:42We need more time on the landing system development and on the
- 49:46food development to do that. They're making tremendous
- 49:49progress in Boca Chica with with their Ted Polites, but it's
- 49:52extremely challenging some of the propeller transfer and other
- 49:57gold that they have in order to make that Earth departure
- 49:59sequence work for us. Yeah, I would say that even if
- 50:02we could fly Artemis 2 on the time frame that we we had
- 50:06planned originally, we would still need the extra time to fly
- 50:09Artemis 3 in September 26th. All right.
- 50:14Thank you. I'm going to move on to Gina
- 50:16from ABC News for our next question.
- 50:19I think this is for for John, but at what point in the mission
- 50:24did the heat field material separate?
- 50:26How much was it? I think we're going to have a
- 50:30Amit lead on that question and then we can have.
- 50:34Yeah, it's interesting. We the other new part about the
- 50:37way we did return on this vehicle was we did what we call
- 50:41a skip reentry and so the majority of the liberation of
- 50:45the material and when I talk about it makes it sound like
- 50:48there's big chunks coming off the vehicle that's not correct.
- 50:50It was some liberation of charm material that in general we were
- 50:54we were not expecting hardly any.
- 50:56We did get some and majority of that occurred after we pulled up
- 51:00from the first phase of that skip reentry.
- 51:02We're still piercing together that overall timeline of course,
- 51:05very tough based on the assets we had to identify each and
- 51:08everyone. But we did what we went by
- 51:12through every piece of video that we had from Orion and from
- 51:15their external effort to determine when they initiate the
- 51:17event for liberation began. And most of it was after we
- 51:21started climbing out of. All right.

- 51:37Can someone address? How many?
- 51:40Refueling flights you guys think is going to be required to get
- 51:42HLS from Leo to the moon? Well, there's been everything
- 51:46said from people on the Hill from.
- 51:48Fights in the team. To just four.
- 51:50I don't really understand why. I realize it's variable you're
- 51:52in the process of planning. All the numbers may change, but
- 51:55can someone please ballpark this for us?
- 51:58Give us a better idea of just how challenging it is to to work
- 52:02all this out? Thanks.
- 52:04Yes, sure Bill. It's a great, it's a great
- 52:06question. I'd like Jessica Jensen for
- 52:08SpaceX to to take that. She's been involved heavily in
- 52:11the development. What I would say is just to
- 52:13start with that, that they have been, SpaceX has been extremely
- 52:17transparent with us. We've been sharing a lot of data
- 52:19with them about our own challenges in terms of cryogenic
- 52:22repealing. And so much of this is just
- 52:25going to have to come from flight test.
- 52:27And I think the probably the reason why you're here on
- 52:29different numbers is because we have a lot of different modeling
- 52:32and analysis iterations that are going on to do that.
- 52:35But the rubber's going to meet the road.
- 52:37Will we actually try and do this in orbit?
- 52:38But I'd like to. I'll hand over to Jessica to see
- 52:41if she's got anything else to add.
- 52:43Yeah, thanks for calling it. So first of all, see if that's
- 52:46super excited and really honored to be a part in the Artemis 3
- 52:50program working with at the Lockheed AXI and all the
- 52:53partners to return USA Return astronauts Afternoon.
- 52:58It's just truly incredible, and Prop 3 is going to be a big part
- 53:03of it. I think the only thing that I
- 53:05want to clarify is the pellet transfer and orbit.
- 53:08It sounds reflexing, scary, and it seems like this kind of big
- 53:11nebulous thing, but when you really break it down into the
- 53:14buried P fib, we've actually achieved almost all of the
- 53:18complex parts already on our operational program now, and
- 53:21it's just going to be piercing them together.
- 53:23For Starship, for example, we've docked, we've burst our dock
- 53:27Dragon, the International safety to more than 30 times.
- 53:31So everything we've learned, the sensors we use, the algorithms
- 53:34that we use for state, Randy View for pulling back all of
- 53:37that, we're going to leverage all of that and having two
- 53:40Starship stock together. Another big thing that I think
- 53:43can seem very intimidating is launching missions in close
- 53:46proximity to each other to be able to see rapid refueling.
- 53:51And on South Kit and Narayan, we're able to launch missions
- 53:54within a few hours of each other had turned around very short.
- 53:57We can even launch off the theme pads within a few beans of each
- 54:00other. So again, we're gonna all
- 54:01leverage those capabilities that we've warned onto Starship.
- 54:05And the last bit is a cryogenic propellant for part of it.
- 54:09So again, that is where we're working ground tests right now
- 54:12and a lot of what we do for cryogenic propellant transfer on
- 54:15the ground translating that to what we do speed.
- 54:19And what's so great about this is because we'll be doing it
- 54:22through a flight test perspective.
- 54:23We'll learn on the flight first flight test how much propellant
- 54:26is actually transferred versus what we predict.
- 54:29We can make changes that on the ground to the next flight and
- 54:31iterate and that will actually wind up determining how many
- 54:35mission we need. But even if it's an expensive
- 54:37amount of mission, we have all the capabilities and have
- 54:40already proven them through other vehicles that we won't be
- 54:43able to do what grade was 3D. Just because this is built now,
- 54:50but the question was how many fuel transfers?
- 54:58Thank you all. Yes, so I will say it will
- 55:01roughly be 10:00-ish. That would be my rough guess
- 55:04right now, but it could be lower depending on how well the first
- 55:06light tests go or it could be a little bit higher.

- 55:20I wanted to follow up on Marsha's question from earlier
- 55:22for Jim. What would it take for NASA to
- 55:25decide to that first moon landing mission off of Artemis 3
- 55:29and on to Artemis 4? And just for Jessica, what is
- 55:32Starship's current milestone schedule, including the
- 55:35propellant transfer test, the landing before it makes that new
- 55:38landing? Thanks.
- 55:41I'll let Jessica go first and five flows from the last
- 55:43question, then I'll get to yours, Joey.
- 55:46Thanks. Yep, so we are tracking for
- 55:50propelled transfer capability again the initial flight test in
- 55:542024 and then continue the learning into 2025.
- 55:58One of the other visions we have leading up to our in this three
- 56:01that we believe is super important.
- 56:03Again your plate test is an uncrewed landing to the moon.
- 56:07So again, using Starship to do an uncrewed landing on the moon
- 56:10and then ascending off the turbine.
- 56:13It's super important to again test to ask before we the people
- 56:15on board thank yeah, every safety of Jeremy.
- 56:19So we want to ensure we do as many flights have as we probably
- 56:22can just on the Starship vehicle in general, but also do the
- 56:25uncreed landing to the moon with Starship before artists 3.
- 56:33And to your first question, Joey, I think it's what I tried
- 56:36to say earlier. What are we going to learn on
- 56:40who that might make us Page 3? What are we going to do from the
- 56:45hardware availability? If hardware is not going to be
- 56:47there in a reasonable time, then maybe we need to make a change
- 56:52and then. What else could possibly be out
- 56:54there that? Some of the issues that Ahmed
- 56:57put out there, like the circuit issues, we didn't anticipate, so
- 57:00we'll learn from the production of other vehicles as well. 2024
- 57:05is a whole bunch of development for some of the spacesuit
- 57:08development that we have to go through the SpaceX flights for
- 57:12the human Lander, that we have to go through the continued
- 57:14build of the two vehicles. So we're constantly looking at
- 57:18what is going to be, what is going to be there and what's
- 57:21going to be ready and what do we need to do to make sure that
- 57:24ultimately we minimize the risk. There's always going to be risk.
- 57:28It's flight test. It's landing on the surface of
- 57:31the moon, but what do we do to minimize that from hardware
- 57:34availability, hardware understanding, and hardware
- 57:36readiness? Great.
- 57:40Great. I'm going to move on to Kenneth

- 58:35Confirm if it would or would not include that refuelling
- 58:40demonstration on that next test flight.

- 58:46Yeah, we are working towards Starship Flight Test #3.
- 58:49Right now we have static fire the featured already we it will
- 58:53not be the mission that does the onward ship to Ship Appellant
- 58:56Transfer since it's just the next series or iteration
- 59:00increasing performance and getting to orbit.
- 59:03But there will be. We are working towards a tipping
- 59:05point demonstration that might be what you're talking about,
- 59:08where the goal is to transfer propellant from the header tank
- 59:12into the main tank so it's smaller, instead of learning
- 59:15about cryogenic propellant transfer in.
- 59:18Orbit. From, from our readiness
- 59:20perspective, we are targeting to be ready in January and then
- 59:24from an SAA like this thing perspective we're getting the
- 59:26life fixture of Flight 3. Part of that is closing out the
- 59:29proactive actions from Flight 2. We're on track for that.
- 59:32We'll work you closely. So we're expecting that like
- 59:34this to come in February. So it's booking like Flight 3
- 59:38will occur in February this year?

- 59:49Hi, thanks for taking my question today.
- 59:52This is for Ahmed. Just for our readers can
- 59:55understand it's astronauts were inside Orion during Artemis
- 59:59One's defense. What could have literally
- 1:00:01happened to them given that the heat Shields, the material
- 1:00:03wasn't a blading like engineers expected it to?
- 1:00:06I'm just wondering, could you be as straightforward as possible
- 1:00:10and just connect those dots about what exactly those
- 1:00:13potential outcomes? Could be, yeah, the great
- 1:00:17question. If we had crew in Artemis 1A
- 1:00:20lunar, the lunar return velocity would have been essentially
- 1:00:23maximal for the missions we have planned.
- 1:00:26They would have not sensed any any disturbance inside the
- 1:00:30vehicle. They would not have, there would
- 1:00:32not have been any excessive heating on the structure, and
- 1:00:35the guidance would have put them exactly where the Navy needed to
- 1:00:39recover them. So there would been, there would
- 1:00:40not have been any impact or so to the crew safety if we had
- 1:00:44that exact same design on Artemis 1.

- 1:00:57I guess it's probably a question for Jim, but maybe also the
- 1:01:00Senator talk a little bit about the confidence that we should
- 1:01:02have in a 2026 launch date for Artemis 3.
- 1:01:06The date is. Moved 2028 to 2024 to 2025, not
- 1:01:10a 2026 and. It just you talk to.
- 1:01:13People in the industry and they don't feel like that's really
- 1:01:15realistic given all of the work that that Ahmed described that
- 1:01:18you described Jim that we've got a that we've got ahead of us.
- 1:01:21And so that's really an aspirational date like where
- 1:01:24there's a load pants or do you think there's a 50 pants of us
- 1:01:27being this date. It just walk you through your
- 1:01:29confidence in that date because it does not seem to be
- 1:01:31consistent with what I'm hearing in industry.
- 1:01:34Yeah. Thanks, Eric.

- 1:01:37It's interesting because we have 11 people in industry on here
- 1:01:40that have signed contracts to meet those dates.
- 1:01:43And so from my perspective, the people in industry.
- 1:01:46Here and. We've supported, we've signed
- 1:01:50contracts to those dates on the government side based on the
- 1:01:54technical details that they've given us that our technical
- 1:01:57teams have come forward with. It is of course not without
- 1:02:01risk. We're moving to air cruise
- 1:02:03safety. We're setting a date for three
- 1:02:06that we have set with our contractors based on the
- 1:02:11technical plans that they've laid out.
- 1:02:13All those technical plans have risks to them.
- 1:02:16They have risk risk mitigation associated with them off ramping
- 1:02:20points based on what we learn as we're going through some of
- 1:02:23those tests, you heard Jessica's great description of what their
- 1:02:26plans are to get through things to support three.
- 1:02:29We also have the space suit development that we're on the
- 1:02:33back end of the preliminary design review for Artemis 3.
- 1:02:36So the what we found out in in that review process and their
- 1:02:40supply chain set up is some of what has also influenced the
- 1:02:44date. So from what do we have for
- 1:02:47confidence, I don't think I can put a number on it.
- 1:02:50What I can tell you is we put margin in there to account for
- 1:02:54some of the risks that we plan to that we anticipate seeing.
- 1:02:58We've tried to address the unknown unknowns and set a
- 1:03:01realistic plan in place. One of the discussions with the
- 1:03:05crew is they want to see a realistic plan because they feel
- 1:03:09like that. Gives them the best path to
- 1:03:11people working, to a realistic schedule and and what we've
- 1:03:16tried to put in place. So confidence wise, I can tell
- 1:03:18you we've looked at all the steps, what it takes to get
- 1:03:21there, who's September of 26th, what it takes to get there from
- 1:03:25launching in September of 25, the launching again in September
- 1:03:28of 26th, an example being what happened to the mobile launcher.
- 1:03:32We understand that better after one we've made engineering
- 1:03:36changes for it to stand the launch more so we anticipate.
- 1:03:41Driving down some of that. So I think like I want you to
- 1:03:44walk away with the the confidence is we understand the
- 1:03:47vehicle better, we understand how it comes together better.
- 1:03:50And then we, we have the industry people on the phone to
- 1:03:54say that's what they've signed up to contractually and that's
- 1:03:57what we're going to hold them accountable all.
- 1:04:01Right. Thank you.
- 1:04:02We're going to take our next question from Jess Fouts from

- 1:04:08A question for Amit, A Bierian factor that you mentioned that
- 1:04:13led to the change in the art of the to launch date, Which one is
- 1:04:16on the critical path? That is, if you have continued
- 1:04:19problems with that, it would further delay the mission.
- 1:04:21Thanks. Good question, Jeff.
- 1:04:23At this point we drove that September date based on the time
- 1:04:27we think it's going to take to do the removal replacement of
- 1:04:30the life support system electronic and the penalty
- 1:04:33testing required to to do the integration on the way back up.
- 1:04:36We're hopeful that the other finding on the on debtor best
- 1:04:39result of a board load on the battery as well as the
- 1:04:43conclusion of all of the of all the the tests required for the
- 1:04:47heat shield of envelope by that work.
- 1:04:51Great. We're going to move on to Irene
- 1:04:53Clot from Aviation Week. Irene, are you on?

- 1:05:10One quick follow on Gina's question is, could you provide
- 1:05:14some metric of how much our material was liberated,
- 1:05:18understanding that most of it occurred after that first pull
- 1:05:21up, like what percentage came off versus what maybe you
- 1:05:25expected to see? And Senator Nelson, you've been
- 1:05:29very clear about your concerns about China and China's
- 1:05:33development and technological initiatives in space.
- 1:05:37And with these delays in the Artemis program, I'm wondering
- 1:05:40first of all, if you have any concerns that China would land
- 1:05:44astronauts on the moon before the US program could return
- 1:05:49astronauts on the moon, and if that would be significant at
- 1:05:53all? Thank you, Irene.
- 1:05:57I do not have a concern. China's going to land before.
- 1:06:04I think China has a very aggressive plan.
- 1:06:09I think that you would like to land before because that might
- 1:06:15give them some PRP, but the fact is I don't think they will.
- 1:06:22I think it is true at their date that they announce keeps getting
- 1:06:28earlier, but specifically with us landing in September of 26th,
- 1:06:38that will be the first. One, OK.
- 1:06:43And yeah, to address the first question, tough because it it's
- 1:06:47a currently was across the geometry of the acreage of the
- 1:06:49heat shield. It was very small localized
- 1:06:52areas. In fact interestingly it would
- 1:06:54be much easier for us to analyze if we had large larger chunks of
- 1:06:58it and it was more defined. That's what makes it such an
- 1:07:01interesting material and physics problem to reproduce.
- 1:07:05But we do have, we have Lockheed Martin on the call.
- 1:07:07So I'd like to see if Tonya Ludwig maybe has any.
- 1:07:10Anything she'd like to add. I think the only thing I'd add
- 1:07:13on it was we don't know, like you said, exactly the cause of
- 1:07:17liberation. We're having a great results in
- 1:07:19the testing and that's why we're doing the extensive ground
- 1:07:22testing to analyze the data. But there was a healthy margin
- 1:07:24remaining of that Virgin Ave. coat.
- 1:07:27So it wasn't like there were large chunks through the, like I
- 1:07:30said, a healthy margin remaining of that Virgin Ave. coat.
- 1:07:32And as you said earlier, the temperature data inside the
- 1:07:34cabin remained at the expected level though crew were on board,
- 1:07:38they wouldn't have been in danger.
- 1:07:39Hopefully that paints the picture of that.
- 1:07:40It wasn't a very large amount at all.
- 1:07:43Yeah. I think, Tony, the only thing
- 1:07:44I'd clarify is that the we did have margin in the material.
- 1:07:47But what we're really worried about and why we're spending so
- 1:07:50much time analyzing that is that changes the flow around the
- 1:07:55spacecraft changes as well. So we really want to make sure
- 1:07:58that we understand the future missions under future condition
- 1:08:01that margin holds up. Yeah, that's.
- 1:08:03Correct. Yeah.
- 1:08:04Yep. Yeah.
- 1:08:06We just want to make sure that we understand why our modeling
- 1:08:08didn't predict it and so that we have accurate modeling for the
- 1:08:10missions going forward. And Irene, my answer to your
- 1:08:16question, remember what I said at the outset, We don't fly
- 1:08:21until it's ready. Safety is paramount.
- 1:08:25Whether we fly in September or 26th and land, regardless of
- 1:08:32what's then about China, we don't fly until it's ready.
- 1:08:39Great. And I think we have time for one
- 1:08:41final question. So we will go with Isam Ahmed
- 1:08:44from AFP. Yes, thank you for taking my
- 1:08:47question. I guess one of them is Jessica,
- 1:08:50how many postal orbital tests do you think spark that needs to do
- 1:08:55well prior to the lunar on crude landing for you to be
- 1:08:59comfortable to commute to the effect?
- 1:09:01And one question for Ahmed, which was in terms of the second
- 1:09:06problem, the electrical problem, I didn't why follow it is a
- 1:09:10suggestion that the battery would might not have had power
- 1:09:12to correctly execute the the ejection procedure, the
- 1:09:16abortion, the abort procedure? Thank you.
- 1:09:19Yeah, give you the question, I'll hand order first part.
- 1:09:23But for the on the battery itself, what we thought in the
- 1:09:26qualification test was we subjected that battery to a full
- 1:09:30separation shock that we would expect for that for the
- 1:09:33spacecraft coming off in the launch vehicle and the worst
- 1:09:36possible loss of control. And in that case we saw a loss
- 1:09:40of in some cases connector conductivity.
- 1:09:43The concern would be not that the vehicle would be able to
- 1:09:45abort safely off of SLS, but that you'd be able to maintain
- 1:09:50all of the power margin that we need for the vehicle to from
- 1:09:53that separation all the way through landing that we're
- 1:09:56working through all that. But it is a it's not about safe
- 1:09:59abort capability. It's about, say, the, say, the
- 1:10:02full functionality of the spacecraft during that abort,
- 1:10:06and then Jess, if you copied the first part of the question, you
- 1:10:08can take that one. Yeah, we're leading up to the
- 1:10:13uncurred mission. The main thing we really need is
- 1:10:16the prop transfer capability, and there's no minimum number of
- 1:10:19blank tests we're going to execute as many of well, it just
- 1:10:22helps them iterate along the way.
- 1:10:24The proc transfer flight has really been being one really
- 1:10:28what's been happening over the past few years as we've been
- 1:10:31building the machine to build the machine.
- 1:10:33So we've basically been building all of the infrastructure and
- 1:10:36entries to ensure that Starship right off the gate have a high
- 1:10:40production rate, is capable of reuse and have a lot.
- 1:10:43They have a high launch rate. And basically all of that is
- 1:10:47going to help us in the prop transfer of lights, the unproof
- 1:10:50demo and finally the crude landing just really taking us a
- 1:10:54long time from the call it like an infrastructure getting
- 1:10:57perspective to get to date's first flight test now the orange
- 1:11:00flight Chesky. There's no bare minimum of
- 1:11:03flights, it's just as many as we can get to help us iterate a
- 1:11:06little bit faster, but really a prop transfer capability than.
- 1:11:14The All right. Want to thank everyone for your

- 1:11:57timelines, but it was pretty interesting that they talked
- 1:12:00about the SpaceX representative talked about the timeline for
- 1:12:03the actual third flight of the Starship, which according to
- 1:12:07them, the hardware will be ready by the end of January, and then
- 1:12:12the FAA license will happen more than likely in February.
- 1:12:16So my predictions of first, like first half of February, middle
- 1:12:21of February may actually come true.
- 1:12:23So I listen, I don't work at SpaceX, but I know some guys,
- 1:12:28OK, I know some guys. And the depot has refilled and
- 1:12:32refueled its liquid oxygen and methane by Starship tanker.
- 1:12:35Yeah, it's got to be really cool.
- 1:12:37Let's go, Joe. The propellant transfer is going
- 1:12:40to be a very interesting, very interesting mechanism because
- 1:12:46they have to have a tanker in orbit and they have to dock with
- 1:12:50a tanker, with a Starship and then transfer fuel from the
- 1:12:55tanker to the Starship. But they also have to launch
- 1:12:57those tankers on a booster. So it it's so many parts in
- 1:13:04order for them to get to the moon, but it's going to be, it's
- 1:13:07going to be incredible. I can't wait for them.
- 1:13:09They're basically going to do a slosh test in the next, the next
- 1:13:12flight in the flight 3 of the Starship.
- 1:13:15Basically a little transfer, like a little slosh transfer
- 1:13:18from tank to tank. So we have some information
- 1:13:21about that, which is really great.
- 1:13:22There was a little bit more information that was shared
- 1:13:24about the thermal protection system of Orion and how it
- 1:13:28ablated a little bit, a little bit of char on the heat shield
- 1:13:31that they weren't expecting and like some pieces of the char
- 1:13:34were, they fell off the Orion. But later on in the broadcast
- 1:13:39they were saying the NASA representative was saying that
- 1:13:41charred didn't affect if there were people inside the Orion.
- 1:13:45So it didn't. There was nothing like really
- 1:13:47bad happened. So fortunately it looks like
- 1:13:51they're they're going to push this back a little bit, but
- 1:13:54that's OK too. It's OK.
- 1:13:56So NASA's going to push it back a little bit.
- 1:13:58What is it now, 2025 for Artemis?
- 1:14:012/20/26 for Artemis 3 and Artemis 4, which is the gateway
- 1:14:08is still on track for 2028, so 20252026 and then 2028.
- 1:14:14So I have time to set up for my mission to the South here, Get
- 1:14:19ready for my NASA mission. Yeah, it's gonna be, it's gonna
- 1:14:22be interesting. I cannot wait to get down there.
- 1:14:26And yeah, to just get it going. If you wanna help me get down to
- 1:14:32the South, I put a GoFundMe in the chat originally.
- 1:14:36Who says you believe those dates?
- 1:14:39I believe that those are better dates.
- 1:14:45It's NASA, so it's gonna be 2025.
- 1:14:50It's a year from now. Could they fix things before
- 1:14:53then? Yes, they could.
- 1:14:54But the lunar landing, Artemis 3, if they see that was the
- 1:15:00other thing, could they do a lunar landing three or four?

- 1:15:05I don't know if the people landing on the lunar surface is
- 1:15:10going to happen when they want to, but they want it to.
- 1:15:13I don't think that part's going to happen, but I think Artemis 2
- 1:15:15is going to be fine. And I think Artemis three.
- 1:15:17I think Artemis 3 might be a demonstration mission.
- 1:15:22I think my Artemis 3 might end up becoming.
- 1:15:24They might change it to a demonstration mission because
- 1:15:29you can't just go in cold. I don't know, just be because
- 1:15:33you have to be like they kept saying during the process there,
- 1:15:36during the NASA press conference, you have to make
- 1:15:40sure that the people are safe. And that's the important part,
- 1:15:43right? So if you do a whole Artemis 3
- 1:15:45mission where the Orion capsule docks and they transfer people
- 1:15:49to the HLS and then that lands if you do that, but without
- 1:15:54people, if you just do it automated without the people and
- 1:15:59test out those systems, and of course you're gonna spend
- 1:16:02millions of dollars doing that. But if those hundreds of
- 1:16:06millions of dollars save the people that are gonna go to the
- 1:16:09moon and also set them up for future moon missions, it's worth
- 1:16:13it in my opinion. You spend money on some stuff,
- 1:16:16right? Like we spend money on stupid
- 1:16:17things all the time. Like the government spends money
- 1:16:20on stupid things all the time. They waste so much money.
- 1:16:22But this wouldn't be a waste, in my opinion, because it's getting
- 1:16:29people to the moon. If you're against getting people
- 1:16:32to the moon, then I got nothing for you at this point.
- 1:16:38Let's see. Michael.

- 1:16:40And actually LH2, harder to keep in liquid from the LNLNG with
- 1:16:46transitions from vapor to gas and back the cryo temps almost
- 1:16:49as easy as water goes from gas to liquid to solid.
- 1:16:52It seems like this is going to be a difficult thing for SpaceX
- 1:16:55to achieve, but hopefully they can get it figured out.
- 1:16:59This is a very small test that they're doing for the third
- 1:17:02flight of the of the Starship, so hopefully they can do a small
- 1:17:06test and get some of the dynamics figured out to begin
- 1:17:09with. Virgilou says I think 2050
- 1:17:12sounds more plausible. 25 more years.
- 1:17:15I don't know if I'll be around in 25 years, man.
- 1:17:18I can't wait. I can't wait.
- 1:17:19I want, I need them to go like as soon as possible.
- 1:17:22AT Brookie says they'll never launch humans back to the moon.
- 1:17:25With this current NASA administration, it will all,
- 1:17:27there will always be risks. So there's been other NASA
- 1:17:33administrations as well before this that have been working on
- 1:17:37this problem that aren't these people that are in this
- 1:17:41administration. There's there have been other
- 1:17:43NASA presidents, other people that work at NASA administrators
- 1:17:46etcetera, and they've been working on this for a very long
- 1:17:49time. It's not just the Artemis
- 1:17:52program, it was the program before Artemis under the Bush
- 1:17:55years that these people were working on this stuff.
- 1:17:58So they changed it around and it now it's now they're pushing
- 1:18:02hard, which is great and they're getting some progress done, but
- 1:18:06and they have the SLS rocket which is you know more than they
- 1:18:09had before the Constellation program before wasn't was a cool
- 1:18:16plan, but it didn't really seem feasible.
- 1:18:19This is feasible. We got a rocket already, we got
- 1:18:21an SLS. So like at least we have that.
- 1:18:23So they've made some pretty good progress with that.
- 1:18:27So we have an SLS, we have Orion.
- 1:18:29So we have two components, at least two of the major
- 1:18:32components in a really good spot.
- 1:18:35The waiting on HLS, they're waiting on the Starship.
- 1:18:39They're also waiting on Boeing because the Boeing, the
- 1:18:41batteries in Boeing, the Orion capsule and the heat shield,
- 1:18:45things like that. They, like they said they spent
- 1:18:47the whole last all of 2023 basically looking at the heat
- 1:18:50shield and trying to figure out a better way to do it.
- 1:18:54And that's what's great about NASA and these companies that
- 1:18:57they work with is that they can take a little bit of time.
- 1:19:00They have funding. They have.
- 1:19:02We pay taxes, right? I pay taxes for NASA.
- 1:19:05I'm happy to pay my taxes for NASA.
- 1:19:07I'd rather pay my taxes for NASA than anything else, so I'm OK
- 1:19:11with that. I would prefer that they get it
- 1:19:14done faster, but I would want them to do it right.
- 1:19:18Do you want it faster? Do you want it right?
- 1:19:19Like, those are usually the questions that engineers ask.
- 1:19:23I'm an engineer, too. Like, I I'm a code engineer.
- 1:19:26Do you want a fast want, like garbage code, or do you want it
- 1:19:30to Do you want me to take some time on it and, like, really
- 1:19:32structure this thing out? And there's a difference.
- 1:19:35There's a big difference between that and some of my stuff.
- 1:19:38Some of my stuff takes months to build, some of my stuff takes a
- 1:19:40couple days to build. So it's same thing with Artemis
- 1:19:43program. Some of these systems take, you
- 1:19:46know, it's going to take them years to get the perfect.
- 1:19:50But do you want it faster? Do you want it good?
- 1:19:52Do you want to? Yeah.
- 1:19:52It's an interesting take on things, right.
- 1:19:57So it's a tough one. It's AI would love them to get
- 1:20:01it done as soon as possible because I'm selfish and if you
- 1:20:03think if you think that. They're not working as hard as
- 1:20:08they can, and the administration at NASA isn't working as hard as
- 1:20:13they can and pushing people through and things.
- 1:20:15They have systems in place now that they didn't have in place
- 1:20:17before during the Apollo program, a little bit reckless.
- 1:20:22They did the best that they could with what they had.
- 1:20:24They're going to get a bunch of money to build a rocket to send
- 1:20:26people to the moon, and you have a certain amount of time to do
- 1:20:29it. You do whatever dangerous things
- 1:20:32you can, and everybody involved knows that.
- 1:20:35You know it. There's a huge amount of danger.
- 1:20:38Yeah, it's it's a tough one. Apollo 1, like there's a fire in
- 1:20:43the. In the crew capsule.
- 1:20:46Yeah, it's. It was pure oxygen.
- 1:20:48They didn't know. So do you want them to do that
- 1:20:50again? I hope not.
- 1:20:52That's a very selfish and unhinged thing to say, yeah,
- 1:20:56let's go fast, make it done, make it work.
- 1:20:58That's the kind of manager I never want.
- 1:21:00If you haven't, if you have a manager, that's.
- 1:21:02Supposed to make it work? Dude, shut up.
- 1:21:05Shut up, manager. Especially if they don't know
- 1:21:07what they're talking about. You don't want that guy.
- 1:21:09You never want that guy. You just want somebody who's OK
- 1:21:11and even keel. Somebody who's not going to put
- 1:21:14people's lives on the line. You want people to make sure
- 1:21:18that everything works properly. Of course there's there's a need
- 1:21:21for urgency, and sometimes is spaceflight that.
- 1:21:26Do we need urgency at this point?
- 1:21:29Is there an urgent need to send people to the moon?
- 1:21:33Why would we rush this? So that's the other question
- 1:21:36too. Why would you rush this?
- 1:21:38I need an answer if I'm a manager or if I'm in a if I'm in
- 1:21:41an engineer, sorry. And my manager comes up to me
- 1:21:43and goes. We need this now and I push back
- 1:21:46all the time. Why do we need this now?
- 1:21:48If they don't have an answer, I'll say we're not going to do
- 1:21:50it then There's no reason for me to rush this.
- 1:21:53It's just because you're being impatient and you're unhinged.
- 1:21:56You're like you have issues, brother.
- 1:21:59It's not me, man. Like, why do we rush this?
- 1:22:02Is it because to make money? That's a good answer.
- 1:22:05Like, just tell me that as opposed to whatever.
- 1:22:07But if you rush it in instead of making it safe, that doesn't
- 1:22:14make any sense. Until Starship hits orbit,

- 1:22:42because we also have funding from the government and they
- 1:22:46dictate what goes on. So people are, you know, people
- 1:22:52want to. Of course it's easy to point
- 1:22:56fingers at somebody or a certain group and blame people, but
- 1:23:00there's there's a big system, like millions of people work at
- 1:23:04NASA and the surrounding companies.
- 1:23:06So like pointing at the engineers themselves.
- 1:23:13I don't think that's fair to them.
- 1:23:16I don't think that's fair to them.
- 1:23:18There's other people of, like I was saying before, like there's
- 1:23:20other people involved. There's politicians.
- 1:23:22If you want to talk about people that don't get it, sit a
- 1:23:26politician down put him in a rocket send them up to send them
- 1:23:30up to the moon. They might understand then but
- 1:23:33they don't understand what it anything about this other than
- 1:23:36there are some of course and I'm talking about the majority.
- 1:23:40They don't because it's not their job to understand this.
- 1:23:42Their job is to get funding for programs and to help people.
- 1:23:46And that's why they hire the engineers and the people that
- 1:23:49are talking between NASA and the politicians, advocates, if you
- 1:23:53will, to to make sure that everything goes well.
- 1:23:57So there's all the pieces. You got to think of all the
- 1:24:01pieces. Yeah.

- 1:24:12Five years, 10 maybe 20. Yeah, that's the NASA model,
- 1:24:15right? Five years maybe.
- 1:24:19It's kind of like Elon time. Elon says it's going to be done
- 1:24:21in January or whatever. The the 420 ships.
- 1:24:25Yeah, we'll watch it in September.
- 1:24:26So I moved. I literally moved to Brownsville
- 1:24:29so it could be near Starship to see the first launch thing
- 1:24:32didn't launch for a year. It was like didn't over a year
- 1:24:36after that it was like, oh come on man, yeah it was like Elon
- 1:24:42time And so you have to think about the consequences of your
- 1:24:44actions too if it's just build this thing and go that is a
- 1:24:48that's a dangerous mindset to have super.
- 1:24:52Especially when you're talking about, not only is it the people
- 1:24:55involved in the rocket, NASA will lose funding, NASA will
- 1:25:01lose funding. Public perception of NASA will
- 1:25:04just tank. If something happens to these
- 1:25:07astronauts during a flight, especially the inaugural crude
- 1:25:11flight of Artemis, that's a tough one.
- 1:25:15You got to make it perfect because not only does NASA have
- 1:25:19to worry about the people involved, but they also have to
- 1:25:22worry about the money they get sent to them, which of course
- 1:25:26it's a as much as we don't like to say this like NASA is a
- 1:25:29business, every piece of the government is a business.
- 1:25:32The business is a or the government is a business.
- 1:25:34Like you got they got to make money, so they get taxes from
- 1:25:37the people. We live on the land.
- 1:25:39So we're like, hey, we're going to tax you for living here.
- 1:25:41It's OK, cool. So we put our money into there
- 1:25:43and then they like that money goes around and some of that
- 1:25:45money goes to NASA. It's a business.
- 1:25:48They got to make sure that their funding doesn't dry up, which is
- 1:25:52unfortunate because if we just gave him a bunch of money and
- 1:25:54said, hey, just do the coolest thing you can do NASA, we would
- 1:25:58have been on living on Neptune by now or something.
- 1:26:01It would have been crazy. It's been yeah, but there's all
- 1:26:08the other parts to it. Yeah.
- 1:26:12The current moon program has been shifted from the moon to
- 1:26:14asteroids and back to the moon. Boeing has been a fatal flaw as
- 1:26:18it has a broken culture. I love space and adventure.
- 1:26:20T Bricky, I think you do have some good points.
- 1:26:26Boeing has been a fatal flaw. I do think that Boeing has an
- 1:26:32old school culture and I do think there are pieces of that
- 1:26:36culture that would hold back progress.
- 1:26:40So that's as nice as I can say it.
- 1:26:42I would say some. If I were the angry astronaut, I
- 1:26:47would talk about Boeing all day long.
- 1:26:49Go crazy on them. But yeah, the the culture is
- 1:26:56very relaxed as far as innovation goes in the Space
- 1:27:00Flight sector. But the Orion capsule is a
- 1:27:04Boeing thing, so there's always good and good and bad for with
- 1:27:10everything. Not everything can be like
- 1:27:13SpaceX, but even SpaceX, they're not the best, they're the best
- 1:27:15at what they do. But they've had, they have
- 1:27:17flaws, too. They have as much as as a fan of
- 1:27:20Elon Musk as I am, the guy is like the public perception of
- 1:27:27his companies, which nobody really cares about if like us,
- 1:27:31we don't care about it. But to stakeholders and the
- 1:27:35companies like Tesla and whatever, like Elon going on
- 1:27:39rants for a while, unhinged like that doesn't help it.
- 1:27:43Yeah. So it's.
- 1:27:47Yeah, I don't know. I don't know how to say this,
- 1:27:52but oh, sorry, I meant Lockheed, not Boeing for the, for the
- 1:27:55capsule, by the way. But yeah, so Boeing makes parts
- 1:27:59for SLS programs. And so there are things that
- 1:28:03Boeing does that are great. So I'm sorry for that.
- 1:28:06But yeah, it's a Lockheed. It's a Lockheed capsule.
- 1:28:10So what I was saying about SpaceX is they had their
- 1:28:12failures in the beginning. They do a great job.
- 1:28:14Now, there were parts where there were times when like
- 1:28:17things didn't go so great. I just Boeing.
- 1:28:20How old is Boeing, by the way? Boeing is old.
- 1:28:23Let's see Boeing, See, let's say Boeing and see when it was
- 1:28:27started. Let's look at their Wikipedia
- 1:28:30for a second here. When was it started?
- 1:28:31It's an old company, 1916. Boeing was started in 1916 and I
- 1:28:41knew it. I know it was old, but I didn't.
- 1:28:43I thought it was a little bit not 1916, it was.
- 1:28:47It's 107 years old, so anything that's 107 years old, there's
- 1:28:55going to be dips, there's going to be spikes, there's going to
- 1:28:59be mountains, there's going to be valleys throughout the time.
- 1:29:02Oh man, it. So there's going to be times
- 1:29:04when Boeing is just the worst, of course, but also sometimes
- 1:29:10Boeing's going to do some really cool stuff according to the
- 1:29:14stock. Let me see the let's see how
- 1:29:15much time according to the stock.

- 1:30:11there's, there's valleys, there's mountains.

- 1:30:17People have said the same thing about Microsoft, which is a
- 1:30:20weird thing to say, Like to bring up Microsoft in a
- 1:30:23conversation about space, but it's also a private company.
- 1:30:26Same thing with any other company that's 100 plus years
- 1:30:29old. Anything that's over 100 years
- 1:30:31old, like Ford Motor Company, things like that.
- 1:30:34It's or Chevy or whatever. Like car companies, like legacy
- 1:30:38car companies, They're going to be weird.
- 1:30:40They're going to be weird sometimes.
- 1:30:43But yeah, yeah, I don't know. It just seems, it seems like
- 1:30:47putting all the all the blame on Boeing at any point.
- 1:30:55It seems almost like an empty argument.
- 1:30:57You can see how they didn't do anything right or they did some
- 1:30:59weird stuff, but I don't think they're holding.
- 1:31:03I don't think that company's holding them back.
- 1:31:05Lockheed's doing a great job. SpaceX is doing a great job
- 1:31:07right now. But if we find out.
- 1:31:09So once you change your tune, and this is like a fun question
- 1:31:12to ask in chat, because I feel the same way as you guys, right?
- 1:31:17So I'm like, Boeing's a valuable company.
- 1:31:19It's a great company. It makes lots of great things.
- 1:31:22They make planes that send people all over the earth all
- 1:31:25the time. So the what if?
- 1:31:32So this is a big what if, And I want to know what Chad thinks.
- 1:31:36What if SpaceX messes up so bad with the HLS?
- 1:31:42What if they mess up so bad that they postpone the human landing
- 1:31:47on the moon for two more years and they weren't waiting for
- 1:31:51batteries for the Orion capsule? They weren't.
- 1:31:53Everything else is ready. Ground systems, the SLS, the
- 1:31:56Orion, everything else is ready. But what if SpaceX makes them
- 1:32:02postpone it for a few years because the Starship isn't
- 1:32:05ready? And then can we change our tune?
- 1:32:11So you have to think about and dig deep within my friends, dig
- 1:32:15deep within. Because I'm one of you.
- 1:32:17I love SpaceX. I'm a SpaceX lover.
- 1:32:20I think it's amazing. I moved my whole life from the
- 1:32:22Northeast where I have all my family, all my friends, all the
- 1:32:24things I love to do. I moved down to Brownsville
- 1:32:26because I love that rocket so much.
- 1:32:29But is if they're if they find something that's so wrong with
- 1:32:36Starship that they can't use it for HLS and they have to
- 1:32:39postpone and stop production stop flights and they have to
- 1:32:43rewind, fix it up for a couple years, everything else is ready
- 1:32:47for the HLS missions except for the HLS part.
- 1:32:53Then what happens? So slow incremental progress Or
- 1:33:00just like how SpaceX does it, iterative design that they
- 1:33:04launch as many things as they can and then whatever goes
- 1:33:06wrong, they figure out what went wrong and then continue to build
- 1:33:10on that and work on that. And I think that's where the
- 1:33:12difference is between legacy companies like Lockheed and
- 1:33:16Boeing and things like that where they do similar things,
- 1:33:22right. Like they they do iterative
- 1:33:24design in those companies, not in the public though.
- 1:33:28So that's I think that's where the difference is because they
- 1:33:32do have a different system, but they do iterative design.
- 1:33:36It's just not as not as Fast and Furious as SpaceX.
- 1:33:41SpaceX goes wild. They go hard in the paint, man.

- 1:33:52fumbles, I think other people will be like, huh, interesting,
- 1:33:57like ULA. They're Vulcan rockets.

- 1:34:05It's going to get missions done. It's going to get the job done.
- 1:34:08It's not a Starship. It's not a Falcon Night.
- 1:34:10It's not reusable. But the people that hire Vulcan
- 1:34:14and they hire ULA don't care. You know, they might be legacy
- 1:34:19people that are getting these contracts, but at some point
- 1:34:23they just go, hey, this is a pretty good price and we trust
- 1:34:26ULA. They make great rockets.
- 1:34:30That's why people hire SpaceX. Too.
- 1:34:32Good price, like anything. Like I buy a car like I buy a
- 1:34:35Subaru because I know it's going to be reliable and it's going to
- 1:34:39be a good car. That's it.
- 1:34:42Good price, like a pretty decent price.
- 1:34:45Good engine. I know it's going to last for a
- 1:34:47while. And then you might buy like
- 1:34:51something a little bit less expensive because you don't have
- 1:34:53as much money. You might get a rideshare.
- 1:34:55You might not even get a car. But does it matter that it
- 1:35:00lands? Like some people don't care?
- 1:35:03Do I care? Yeah, I would rather every
- 1:35:04rocket land I want every rocket. I want every rocket to land like
- 1:35:07a Falcon 9 every time I want a Starship to land.

- 1:35:55every once in a while you get a bed batch fracture.

- 1:37:05amount of cargo going to space for a good price too.

- 1:37:25They want to be the best in that if you apply to space XI know
- 1:37:29people that work there. I used to live right next to
- 1:37:31four or five people that worked at SpaceX and they know how
- 1:37:34competitive it is and like it's hard work.
- 1:37:38I was neighbors, I was friends with them.
- 1:37:40I still keep in touch with them and the their interview process,
- 1:37:45super competitive. You're if you're not like the
- 1:37:48best of the best, they're not going to hire you.
- 1:37:50Just forget about it. Forget about it.
- 1:37:53They're not going to, they're not going to talk to you.
- 1:37:54It's going to be like, oh, you're just some rando with some
- 1:37:57cool projects or whatever, you're cool.
- 1:37:59But all the people that I was friends with and and Starbase,
- 1:38:07they were just ridiculously intelligent people.
- 1:38:12So crazy, so crazy. And they're all competitive.
- 1:38:17They're all very, they would talk about Starship like it's
- 1:38:20going to change humanity like they have.
- 1:38:24It's almost like a Steve Jobs type of like an Apple sort of
- 1:38:28sense like we're taking on, we're taking on the world.
- 1:38:33And them as engineers and as people involved with that
- 1:38:37company, they wanted to like, they wanted to destroy everybody
- 1:38:42in like a good way, in a competitive way.
- 1:38:45It's like when you play soccer or something, like when you play
- 1:38:48a game against somebody else and you're like, I'm going to beat
- 1:38:51you at this game. And it's because I have this
- 1:38:54drive in me. It has nothing to do with you.
- 1:38:56It's just because it's driving me.
- 1:38:58I'm going to do the best thing for humanity.
- 1:39:01And that's why everybody at SpaceX thinks so.
- 1:39:04Those people. Are.
- 1:39:06Who make things happened down there.
- 1:39:09It's incredible. It was I just fortunate to have
- 1:39:11them as friends and to know that they exist and that they took me
- 1:39:14in as like one of their homies. Like I had barbecues with them
- 1:39:17and stuff. It was pretty fun, yeah.
- 1:39:20So yeah, I had some good times anyway, I can't talk about most
- 1:39:24of it but not like that though. Not like that most of it.
- 1:39:27They wouldn't spill the tea or anything.
- 1:39:29They would just say say some things.
- 1:39:30But that was back in the day too.
- 1:39:31Like the 420 Ship Four or Ship 20 booster four days.
- 1:39:36So all of that stuff is passed by now.
- 1:39:39So they would talk about it a little bit and just passing,
- 1:39:41like, with each other. And I'd be like, oh, OK,
- 1:39:46Interesting. As a reporter, as a Space Flight
- 1:39:48reporter, they just let me around.
- 1:39:50I was like, dude, what are you guys doing?
- 1:39:51But I wouldn't report on it, 'cause it was just, that's not
- 1:39:54the right thing to do. But I would hint at it every
- 1:39:56once in a while. Yeah, it's gonna be it's gonna
