- 0:01Hey, everybody. Welcome back to the Elon Musk
- 0:04Podcast. This is a show where we discuss
- 0:07the critical crossroads, the shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The
- 0:11Boring Company and Neurolink. I'm your host, Will Walden.
- 0:16How low are Tesla's prices dropping for the Model Y?
- 0:19And also what's driving these new discounts?
- 0:22And is it worth holding out for the updated Model Y known as
- 0:26Juniper? Also, Cybertruck is seeing some
- 0:29price cuts just months after its launch.
- 0:32Let's unpack these details and explore what this means for
- 0:36Tesla, and more importantly, what it means for you, the
- 0:39customer. Tesla is rolling out significant
- 0:42discounts on select Model Y inventory vehicles in the United
- 0:45States, fueling interest among buyers seeking lower prices for
- 0:50one of the most popular electric vehicles on the market.
- 0:53The discounts arrive as Tesla prepares to release the
- 0:56anticipated Juniper update to the Model Y later this year.
- 0:59And the current discounts make some Model Y configurations
- 1:02cheaper than ever, a move likely intended to clear existing
- 1:06inventory before the updated model debuts.
- 1:09Now, the Model YS importance to Tesla cannot be overstated.
- 1:13According to Kelley Blue Book, the Model Y was the best selling
- 1:16electric vehicle in the United States in 2024, far outpacing
- 1:20its competitors. When combined with the Model 3,
- 1:23Tesla's two most accessible vehicles accounted for over 40%
- 1:28of the US electric vehicle market last year.
- 1:31Now, the dominance has solidified Tesla's leadership in
- 1:33the EV sector, but it's also created challenges as
- 1:36competitors like Ford, Rivian, and Lucid Motors continue to
- 1:40narrow this gap. Current discounts of the Model Y
- 1:43inventory are particularly noteworthy for their pricing,
- 1:45which in some cases brings the vehicles cost below $40,000.
- 1:50This price includes the $7500 federal EV tax credit, which
- 1:54applies to many Tesla models. And for example, a long range
- 1:58all-wheel drive Model Y in Stealth Gray available through
- 2:02Tesla's inventory page is listed at $38,570 before taxes and fees
- 2:08is nearly $2000 less than the same model.
- 2:10Order directly from Tesla's build to order system where it's
- 2:14priced at $40,490.00. These inventory specific
- 2:19discounts effectively reduce the cost of the all-wheel drive
- 2:22Model Y to levels typically associated with Tesla's lower
- 2:26priced rear wheel drive variant. Buyers looking for an all-wheel
- 2:31drive Model Y which offers better handling and performance
- 2:34may find this an attractive opportunity, especially with
- 2:37Tesla Straightforward ordering online which makes the deals
- 2:41really easy to spot. Go check them out right now at
- 2:43tesla.com. The leasing options are also
- 2:46more affordable for discounted Model Y inventory.
- 2:48A standard lease for an all-wheel drive Model Y is
- 2:51around $399 per month before taxes and fees.
- 2:55However, discounts on inventory vehicles allow Tesla to offer
- 2:59slightly reduced monthly payments, with some leases
- 3:02dropping to about $10 less $385 per month.
- 3:06But this may seem like a small difference, though.
- 3:09Over a typical three-year lease term, it adds up to meaningful
- 3:12savings for cost conscious customers.
- 3:15Now. It's essential, however, for
- 3:17potential buyers to understand that these discounts apply to
- 3:20the current version of the Model Y, which Tesla first launched in
- 3:23March of 2020. And while the vehicle remains a
- 3:26top seller, it's no longer Tesla's newest design.
- 3:31It's been updated. There's a Model Y called the
- 3:33Juniper, which is announced earlier this month in China and
- 3:37is expected to bring notable improvements when it arrives in
- 3:39the United States, though the exact timing remains unclear.
- 3:46The Juniper update is widely believed to include both
- 3:48interior and exterior design enhancements, similar to the
- 3:52changes Tesla made to the Model 3 in 2023.
- 3:54And while many details remain speculative, analysts suggest
- 3:58that the updated version will appeal primarily to returning
- 4:01Tesla customers rather than first time buyers.
- 4:04Many customers for the update will be returning Tesla owners.
- 4:08This suggests that the discounts on the current Model Y are
- 4:11likely aimed at enticing new customers into the Tesla
- 4:14ecosystem before the refresh model arrives.
- 4:17Now, beyond the Model 3, Tesla's also slashing prices on the
- 4:21recently launched Cyber Truck, the electric pickup that has
- 4:24drawn equal parts fascination and criticism since its
- 4:28unveiling. The Cyber Truck, which first
- 4:30rolled off production lines in late 2023, has faced numerous
- 4:33challenges including delays, production bottlenecks and
- 4:36criticisms of its unconventional design and also its tow hitch
- 4:41being ripped off on some YouTube videos.
- 4:44Now Tesla's website now this discounts of up to $1600 on new
- 4:48Cyber Trucks configurations, bringing the starting price of
- 4:51the vehicle to $72,000 and or $72,890.00 in demo units.
- 4:57Vehicles used for test drives or display purposes are also seeing
- 5:01steep price reductions, with discounts reaching as much as
- 5:05$3410 off. Even with these markdowns,
- 5:09though, the Cyber Truck remains far more expensive than
- 5:12initially promised. Elon Musk said it was going to
- 5:15be around $40,000, but the figure has been abandoned and
- 5:21the production costs have soared.
- 5:23So $80,000 ish is what you're going to get a cyber truck for.
- 5:28So about double the price. So report suggests that Tesla is
- 5:32grappling with significant production challenges at a Skiga
- 5:34factory in Texas where the cyber truck is built.
- 5:38And some Tesla employees have even been reassigned from the
- 5:41cyber truck assembly line to focus on manufacturing the Model
- 5:44Y, Tesla's top selling vehicle. It's important for the Model Y
- 5:49to continue to grow in this the biggest part of Tesla's bottom
- 5:54line, especially as the company navigates increasing competition
- 5:57in the coming years. Now the cyber truck hasn't been
- 6:02a smooth launch since since it launched, vehicle has faced
- 6:05criticism for the exterior. Of course, it's weird looking on
- 6:09the road is big, is bulky, it's angular and it's been prone to
- 6:14rust and spotting. In December, Tesla recalled
- 6:1870,000 Cyber Trucks due to issues with the tire pressure
- 6:21monitor system, marking the 7th recall for the sharp edged
- 6:25electric pickup. And but despite these setbacks,
- 6:27the Cyber Truck remains a cornerstone of the product
- 6:30lineup, even as it's polarizing design continues to divide
- 6:35public opinion. Now price wars within the EV
- 6:41market have added another layer for Tesla legacy automakers for
- 6:46General Motors and Rivian also and Lucid.
- 6:49The new guys have been aggressively competing on price
- 6:52to capture market share. For Tesla, which is historically
- 6:55positioned itself as a premium vehicle, these market dynamics
- 7:00have necessitated more frequent price adjustments.
- 7:02This counts on the Y and the cyber truck also raise questions
- 7:05about demand for Tesla's vehicles.
- 7:07And while Tesla has consistently ranked among the top selling EV
- 7:10brands, the company has faced slowing sales growth in recent
- 7:14quarters, especially in regions like China and Europe.
- 7:17Analysts have speculated that these price reductions may be a
- 7:20strategic response to waning demand as Tesla seeks to
- 7:24maintain its competitive edge. But for potential buyers, the
- 7:28question of whether to take advantage of current discounts
- 7:30or wait for new models remains central consideration right now.
- 7:35While the current Model Y offers excellent value with its reduced
- 7:39price, the upcoming Juniper update may sway some customers
- 7:43to wait for the latest features and design improvements.
- 7:46Meanwhile, the Cyber Trucks price cuts could make the pickup
- 7:50a more attractive option for those willing to overlook its
- 7:53design and production hiccups. It's a weird looking truck
- 7:56compared to other vehicles on the road, but some people love
- 8:00it, and Tesla's strategy will likely hinge on how well the
- 8:04company can balance its existing product lineup with its plans
- 8:08for innovation and expansion. The Model Y and the Cyber Truck
- 8:11are two different aspects of Tesla's approach.
- 8:15The former is a proven volume seller and the latter as a bold
- 8:18statement and an experiment that will redefined electric vehicles
- 8:23for the future Now if you want my take on this, you can go to
- 8:28discord. We have a discord you can check
- 8:30it out in a link in the show notes, but I'm going to give you
- 8:32a little taste here let's talk about this in the discord
- 8:35because we can have a bigger conversation about this.
- 8:38I am a big fan of the model Yi almost pulled the trigger out of
- 8:42model Y just about six months ago and I held off I don't know
- 8:47why, but I held off on it. I currently, yeah, I'm looking
- 8:52into the Juniper. I'm waiting for the Juniper to
- 8:54come through and I've seen all the improvements to the Model Y
- 8:59and I will pick up a Juniper when they launch.
- 9:02It's going to be a great car for a family.
- 9:05I have a family now and the the cyber truck, which we talked
- 9:09about in this episode, not so great for me.
- 9:11It's a big car. I have a small child, you know,
- 9:15large vehicle, very impractical for that, but it's a statement.
- 9:19It's a fashion piece, if you will.
- 9:20You show up at any place with that truck and people are going
- 9:23to look at you. And I'm OK with that.
- 9:25But the Model Y seems to fit my style a little bit more.
- 9:28I like a coupe and I like a sedan.
- 9:31And the Model Y is a is a great vehicle for the price.
- 9:36If you get an older model vehicle, Model Y, that's a great
- 9:40deal there right now. So check out Tesla's website for
- 9:44any deals you can get. Just keep checking back
- 9:47everyday. They might post something new.
- 9:48And I know when I was looking for mine, there were deals going
- 9:51on where I could have gotten probably, I was, I think it's
- 9:55about 2500 to 3000 off when I was going to buy mine and I just
- 10:01didn't pull the trigger. I, I, there's something going on
- 10:03and I've heard about the Juniper.
- 10:05I heard they were going to refresh the Model Y.
- 10:07So I just had to, I waited a few months And then by that time I
- 10:10was also going to pull the trigger and I stopped and I
- 10:14stopped myself. And I was like, there's got
- 10:15something new is going to happen.
- 10:17The refresh is going to happen. So I got to wait.
- 10:19I thought, I thought it was either going to be that or like
- 10:21the $25,000 Tesla that we've all been hearing about.
- 10:25So I just held, I hold, hold, hold.
- 10:29And then now the Juniper is coming out, so that will be my
- 10:32next vehicle. That's my plan.
- 10:34So if you want more information, go to the Discord link in the
