- 0:30Welcome everyone, to the Becker's Healthcare podcast series. I'm Mara Mohammed,
- 0:34writer and moderator with Becker's Healthcare,
- 0:36and I'm absolutely thrilled to have with me today Michael Weiner,
- 0:39chief Medical Officer at M S U Healthcare. Michael,
- 0:42it's very nice to have you on the podcast today. How are you?
- 0:45Really, really well, thank you so much.
- 0:47Yeah, of course. Well, to get us started,
- 0:49would you mind please introducing yourself and then telling us a bit about your
- 0:52background? Michael.
- 0:54Weiner. I am, uh,
- 0:56osteopathic physician out of the wonderful college of, uh,
- 1:00osteopathic medicine in Philadelphia.
- 1:02I have been an internal medicine physician for about three decades,
- 1:06and for the majority of that I served in the United States Navy, where I, uh,
- 1:11served a multitude of roles around the globe,
- 1:13everything from being an internal medicine physician to being the head of
- 1:18NATO's, clinical informatic, uh,
- 1:20systems to being a space shuttle, um,
- 1:24takeoff and landing physician. And I'm just,
- 1:27I recently joined the incredible team over at, uh,
- 1:30Michigan State University and started earlier this year and I'm excited to
- 1:35help transform healthcare in the Midwest.
- 1:39Yeah, absolutely. Well, first of all, thank you for your service. Um,
- 1:43and second, I am a Ohioan, so you know, we have a bit of issues,
- 1:47but that's okay. Alright, we just.
- 1:48Met, we can't start off like this.
- 1:50I know. I'm so sorry, . Um,
- 1:54but with all your busy experience being in this field for a long time,
- 1:58the first thing I wanted to ask you is,
- 2:00can you tell me about your most successful project or initiative from the last
- 2:03year? What issues were you trying to solve and also what drove the success?
- 2:08Yeah,
- 2:08so my last year has really been here at Michigan State
- 2:13University in, uh, support of their healthcare and the community we serve.
- 2:17So I will say thus far,
- 2:19I think one of our biggest collective successes has been in driving,
- 2:24um, primary care within mid-Michigan. So we,
- 2:28when I first got here, we started a primary care task force, um,
- 2:33understanding the needs of the local community of the state,
- 2:37and really of the nation, um,
- 2:39to help patients find primary care providers.
- 2:44So we've been growing out our primary care teams,
- 2:47we've been reaching out virtually across the state, um,
- 2:50and we're addressing the needs of primary care physicians around
- 2:55recruitment and retention in addition to the needs of our patients to
- 3:00go with, to,
- 3:01to not be homeless when it comes to having a primary care
- 3:06provider. And,
- 3:08and to dive a little deeper into some of their actual clinical needs of
- 3:13blood, you know, blood pressure control, diabetes control, um,
- 3:18lipid control in addition to helping solve some of the opioid crisis that,
- 3:24you know,
- 3:24we're facing in the state and the nation is facing from coast to coast.
- 3:31Yeah, that is absolutely incredible. Thank you for sharing that insight.
- 3:34As you know, the clinical workforce has changed a lot in the last few years.
- 3:38Mm-hmm. ,
- 3:39what challenges are you still facing and how do you see the clinical workforce
- 3:43evolving? Well.
- 3:44I, I have to tell you, you know, post covid, I, we,
- 3:49we've seen a retirement, uh, an entire, you know,
- 3:52generation begin to go into retirement. Um,
- 3:55and we've seen a new group of providers coming up through the ranks that I,
- 4:00you know,
- 4:00that I think are potentially even more altruistic than the generations before
- 4:05them. With that, though, they grew up, the, the generation of, uh,
- 4:10providers that we're seeing now, they grew up, you know,
- 4:12with technology buried in their lives. And as part of that,
- 4:17the electronic health record is no longer the source subject of
- 4:22the day for our next generation of providers. And, you know,
- 4:26they're very comfortable in a more virtual world. So, you know,
- 4:30when we meet with them, you know, in recruitment and retention, you know,
- 4:34one of the requests is how, you know,
- 4:36can I continue to see my patients virtually and how can I have
- 4:41a, you know, a little bit of a hybrid lifestyle, uh, as a provider. You know,
- 4:46we saw all of our patients virtually for a few years. So, you know,
- 4:51I'd like to continue some of that practice, uh, at this particular time.
- 4:55So I think the new generation of providers, certainly altruistic,
- 4:59wanting to go out and, you know,
- 5:02write the injustices that, um,
- 5:06that we often find within healthcare around health equity and social
- 5:10determinants of health, and, um,
- 5:13much more aptt to enjoy and utilize the technology that's
- 5:18given to them. And that also often will result into just a much more virtual
- 5:24practice than I think any of us who came up through healthcare, you know,
- 5:28a few decades ago.
- 5:32Yes. Wonderful. Thank you so much for giving us that information. And Michael,
- 5:36before I let you go, being the C m O, the last question I wanted to ask you is,
- 5:41what is your best advice for aspiring physician and nurse leaders?
- 5:45Yeah, I, I have to tell you,
- 5:47things that have helped me over the years have been number one,
- 5:50learning technology.
- 5:51So along the way I picked up a master's in information system
- 5:55technology as seeing how healthcare, I think ultimately,
- 6:01uh, one of its saving graces was going to be technology. So, you know,
- 6:06with this aging population and this inundation of this tsunami
- 6:10of gray hair patients who are not aging gracefully
- 6:16and you know, a shortage of providers, you know, I think that that gap,
- 6:21that delta will be filled in through, um, technology advancements.
- 6:26So, you know, number one, learn technology, learn data,
- 6:30learn how to analyze the data,
- 6:31learn how to utilize the data and learn how to act upon the data. And then,
- 6:37you know, I think for aspiring physician and nurse leaders,
- 6:41you know, leadership can be taught.
- 6:45Now I did my undergraduate at the Naval Academy.
- 6:48I spent years and years in the Navy as a, um,
- 6:52medical officer leader. And you know,
- 6:55throughout that I was taught leadership.
- 6:59And along the way I went out and got a master's in management to also learn
- 7:04how to manage teams of people, manage a business,
- 7:08manage an organization. So, you know, I think more education, um,
- 7:13for those that are aspiring to actually run and lead an organization,
- 7:18I think, you know, leaders need to continue to see patients.
- 7:23The provider community is a tough lot. And if you're not there,
- 7:27elbow to elbow, shoulder to shoulder with them, you know,
- 7:30I think it's very hard to evoke some of the changes that we are all hoping to
- 7:35see within healthcare.
- 7:38Yes, I 100% agree. Um, thank you so much for those final thoughts. Michael,
- 7:43this has been an amazing discussion. So again,
- 7:44I wanna thank you so much for coming on Beckers Healthcare,
- 7:47and I look forward to connecting with you again consumed.
- 7:49Thank you, Mariah.
