- 0:26Speaker 1: the Giants, but they lost Derek Carr in the process.
- 0:30Speaker 1: If you weren't watching the game, about four minutes to
- 0:33Speaker 1: go in the ballgame, the Saints are up fourteen to eleven.
- 0:35Speaker 1: They're facing a second and ten. Derek Carr rolls right
- 0:39Speaker 1: and pinned up against the sideline. He goes airborne, lands
- 0:42Speaker 1: awkwardly on his not his left non throwing hands stayed down.
- 0:48Speaker 1: After the game, Darren Rizzy noted that Car injured his
- 0:53Speaker 1: left hand, but was also in the concussion protocol and
- 0:57Speaker 1: he'd be evaluated so on Monday, Ian Rappaport reported that
- 1:04Speaker 1: Derek Carr actually Sunday after the game, he reported Carr
- 1:07Speaker 1: was feared of suffered a fracture in his non throwing hand.
- 1:13Speaker 1: On Monday, Rappaport confirmed that Carr did in fact suffer
- 1:18Speaker 1: a significt I'm reading his tweet, a significant fracture in
- 1:21Speaker 1: his non throwing hand. He's expected to miss several weeks.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Based on where we are in the season, this is
- 1:28Speaker 1: potentially season ending. Darren Rizzy met with reporters on Monday.
- 1:37Speaker 1: This was after Rappaport's report about the significant fracture and
- 1:42Speaker 1: a potentially season ending injury to Carr. Here was Rizzy
- 1:47Speaker 1: on Monday.
- 1:48Speaker 2: You know, I've already seen some reports out there a
- 1:50Speaker 2: little bit, a little bit false. So right now, obviously,
- 1:52Speaker 2: like I said yesterday, Derek's dealing with a non throwing
- 1:56Speaker 2: hand injury as it stands at this moment, I don't
- 1:59Speaker 2: believe it's going to be an eye our situation. I
- 2:01Speaker 2: think it's gonna be a week to week situation. So
- 2:03Speaker 2: we're gonna kind of take this day by day this week,
- 2:05Speaker 2: We'll see how this week plays out. He is in
- 2:06Speaker 2: the concussion protocol also, so he's got to complete the
- 2:09Speaker 2: first step of that tomorrow, so that it is a
- 2:12Speaker 2: double aspect in terms of the injury you're dealing with both,
- 2:15Speaker 2: So we got to obviously to see what happens there.
- 2:17Speaker 2: But this will be a day to day right now
- 2:19Speaker 2: this week, and really I think it's gonna end up
- 2:20Speaker 2: being a week too. The way it looks, it'll end
- 2:22Speaker 2: up being a week to week situation with him.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Okay, so week to week. They're not putting Derek Carr
- 2:27Speaker 1: on If if they put him on IR, his season
- 2:29Speaker 1: would be over. So they're not putting Derek Carr on
- 2:30Speaker 1: injured reserve, meaning he'd be eligible. I mean, he's still
- 2:34Speaker 1: available to play if he's physically able. He does have
- 2:37Speaker 1: to clear concussion protocol, as you heard him say there,
- 2:40Speaker 1: and Rizzy was very clear they asked him about Sunday,
- 2:43Speaker 1: this coming Sunday against Washington.
- 2:44Speaker 3: We're not gonna ru him out just yet.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I think we have to see how the next day
- 2:48Speaker 2: or two, what the healing process is like, and see
- 2:52Speaker 2: if he can function. But again, don't forget we're also
- 2:55Speaker 2: dealing with the other aspect.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Too, So.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Again just we'll wait and see about this week. It's
- 3:04Speaker 1: his left non throwing hand, so it doesn't affect his
- 3:06Speaker 1: ability to throw, Like, can you take a snap under center?
- 3:09Speaker 1: Can you deal with the pain? Is he gonna wear
- 3:10Speaker 1: a club all that stuff. I don't know so, but
- 3:12Speaker 1: again they're not rolling him out yet. But concussion is
- 3:15Speaker 1: a part of that as well. I do have some
- 3:18Speaker 1: thoughts and listen, it's disappointing because, like we talked about
- 3:24Speaker 1: back when Carr got hurt against Kansas City, regardless of
- 3:27Speaker 1: my feelings on Derek Carr big picture, which I've been
- 3:30Speaker 1: very upfront, literally from the day the Saint signed Derek Carr,
- 3:34Speaker 1: he has a higher floor, lower ceiling. Like with Derek Carr,
- 3:39Speaker 1: your floor isn't two and fifteen, you have a higher floor,
- 3:43Speaker 1: which you have a lower ceiling. Eleven years is a
- 3:45Speaker 1: starting quarterback in the NFL. We know what Derek Carr is.
- 3:48Speaker 1: He is a lower mid upper, low tier quarter starting quarterback,
- 3:53Speaker 1: still a starting quarterback, still one of the greatest quarterbacks
- 3:56Speaker 1: in the world. But he's never gonna win you anything
- 3:58Speaker 1: of significance. Like we have a large enough sample size
- 4:00Speaker 1: now eleven years to know what he is. He is,
- 4:03Speaker 1: Andy Dalton, you can all roll your eyes and scoff
- 4:05Speaker 1: at that, but I'd said at the day they signed him,
- 4:08Speaker 1: he looked at the stats. They are identical players. Derek
- 4:13Speaker 1: Carr is Andy Dalton. He's a starting quarter He's a
- 4:15Speaker 1: starting quarterback in the NFL. He's just not an elite
- 4:18Speaker 1: starting quarterback in the NFL and never will be now.
- 4:20Speaker 1: As he gets older, you wonder about durability and a
- 4:22Speaker 1: lot of things like that. But he is still a
- 4:25Speaker 1: better option right now than Jay Cayner or Spencer Ratler.
- 4:29Speaker 1: So if you can have Derek Carr, of course you
- 4:31Speaker 1: want Derek Carr. Rizzy was asked point blank, and I
- 4:36Speaker 1: would go a little deeper. He was as point blank,
- 4:38Speaker 1: if Derek, if this is an injury that Derek Carr
- 4:41Speaker 1: can play can play through.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I'll say this, It's been done before.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I don't know if it was justin Herbert off the
- 4:45Speaker 2: top of my head, or Josh Allen or whoever it was,
- 4:48Speaker 2: has had these injuries before. With this non throwing hand,
- 4:50Speaker 2: it appears at the moment that it's non surgical, which
- 4:53Speaker 2: is a big aspect of it.
- 4:54Speaker 3: And if it was.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Surgical, we'd be talking about having a different conversation, which
- 4:58Speaker 2: is why this is going to remain day to day,
- 5:00Speaker 2: week to week type of thing. And so, but it
- 5:02Speaker 2: has been done before. Like I said, we're also dealing
- 5:04Speaker 2: with the concussion aspect of it. So we have to
- 5:06Speaker 2: we have to make sure he's clear there from that aspect,
- 5:09Speaker 2: and then we'll take, you know, one step at a time.
- 5:11Speaker 2: It clear as a concussion, then we'll see if you know,
- 5:12Speaker 2: he's going to be able to function.
- 5:14Speaker 3: He's obviously sore today. It's the day after the injury.
- 5:17Speaker 2: So when I say day to day, we'll see how
- 5:18Speaker 2: he follows up with the you know everything, swelling, all
- 5:20Speaker 2: that kind of stuff.
- 5:21Speaker 3: We'll see where he's at moving forward.
- 5:23Speaker 1: So I'm a little torn on the injury itself, on
- 5:26Speaker 1: the play itself, which I guess we have to talk about. Uh,
- 5:28Speaker 1: there's one part of me that looks at it and goes, man,
- 5:33Speaker 1: you love to see that from your veteran leader. I mean,
- 5:38Speaker 1: you're a you're a you're a four and eight football team.
- 5:41Speaker 1: You're in a three point game, four minutes to go,
- 5:44Speaker 1: it's second and ten. You're trying to make a play.
- 5:47Speaker 1: He goes airborne. Like that part of it you love.
- 5:51Speaker 1: The other part of it is you go, I mean,
- 5:54Speaker 1: you gotta be smarter than that. It was second down.
- 5:57Speaker 1: It's not like the game is on the line, you're
- 6:01Speaker 1: up three. It's second and ten. If he runs out
- 6:03Speaker 1: of bounds or even puts his shoulder down and goes out.
- 6:08Speaker 1: You got nine yards. Now you get two downs to
- 6:10Speaker 1: get one like and I understand you haven't run the
- 6:12Speaker 1: ball very well. That's a dangerous play obviously, know when
- 6:14Speaker 1: thinks you're gonna get injured in the manner he did. So,
- 6:16Speaker 1: I'm not gonna like come out and say that again.
- 6:19Speaker 3: I'm torn.
- 6:19Speaker 1: I love the fact, love the fact that in that
- 6:23Speaker 1: moment he's doing everything he can to get that extra
- 6:26Speaker 1: yard for his team. Love that. Don't love the fact
- 6:29Speaker 1: that it wasn't very very smart thing to do in
- 6:33Speaker 1: the moment, considering the down and distance. But again, I
- 6:37Speaker 1: love the fact that he has that mindset right there.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And of course the decision not to put him on
- 6:44Speaker 1: IR does leave open the possibility of returning. We'll see
- 6:48Speaker 1: how likely that may be. Now. As far as what
- 6:51Speaker 1: you do moving forward with Hayner or Rattler if Carr
- 6:54Speaker 1: is out, there's that question. And look, let's be very clear.
- 6:57Speaker 1: You had three games where Spencer Round started. In those
- 7:01Speaker 1: three games, you averaged fifteen points per game. You were
- 7:04Speaker 1: not very good offensively, and yes, one of those was
- 7:07Speaker 1: against the Chargers, which at the time was the best
- 7:10Speaker 1: scoring defense in the NFL again, had three games, it
- 7:15Speaker 1: was Tampa Bay. Let's say it was Tampa the who
- 7:22Speaker 1: am I forgetting?
- 7:23Speaker 3: Load? What with this load?
- 7:24Speaker 1: Who am I forgetting? Tampa Bay? Broncos Broncos? And Thursday
- 7:28Speaker 1: Night Football is Tampa Broncos and the Chargers. You scored
- 7:30Speaker 1: twenty seven against Tampa, ten against Denver, and then eight
- 7:34Speaker 1: against the Chargers. That was with Rattler starting. The other
- 7:38Speaker 1: ten games with Derek Carr starting, you've averaged twenty four
- 7:42Speaker 1: and a half points per game. Now, if you eliminate
- 7:44Speaker 1: the first two, which you can't do, but it's clearly
- 7:46Speaker 1: been a dramatically different season than the first two games.
- 7:49Speaker 1: You've averaged nineteen points per game with Derek Carr outside
- 7:53Speaker 1: of the first two, which had been more than norm
- 7:56Speaker 1: fifteen with Rattlers. So it's not like it's been a
- 7:57Speaker 1: gigantic difference. But if you do take into the count
- 7:59Speaker 1: of the first two games, you're averaging nearly ten points
- 8:02Speaker 1: more per game with Derek Carr than the three that
- 8:04Speaker 1: you didn't have him. So the question now becomes Hayin
- 8:07Speaker 1: or Rattler if Carr can't go. Darren Rizzy was asked
- 8:10Speaker 1: on Monday how they're gonna split the reps in practice
- 8:13Speaker 1: this week. But then also what goes into the decision
- 8:17Speaker 1: to choose between Rattler, who started three times and Hayner,
- 8:20Speaker 1: who's been the backup when car has been injured.
- 8:22Speaker 3: I gotta be.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Honest, I actually feel I'm not trying to play defense
- 8:25Speaker 2: sitter here. I actually think both guys give us a
- 8:27Speaker 2: chance to win. I think obviously, the last time Derek
- 8:30Speaker 2: was out for extended period of time, we decided to
- 8:32Speaker 2: go with Spencer. I think Jake and both guys I
- 8:34Speaker 2: think had performed well right since training camp, and so
- 8:38Speaker 2: you know, I thought in that last go around, we
- 8:40Speaker 2: felt like Spencer gave us the best chance to start.
- 8:42Speaker 2: And so you know, that's where we're going to kind
- 8:44Speaker 2: of list all the hey pros and cons who are
- 8:45Speaker 2: playing with defense. What's the game plan? Here are the weapons,
- 8:48Speaker 2: and so that's the all the things we're gonna discuss today.
- 8:50Speaker 2: We'll have a decision bout that private tomorrow.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Okay, who you're playing this week, of course, is is Washington. Now,
- 8:55Speaker 1: remember in the NFL schedule wise, today's a recovery day.
- 9:00Speaker 1: They'll all be in the building getting treatment. Tuesday is
- 9:02Speaker 1: an off day in the NFL. Then they're at practice
- 9:04Speaker 1: on Wednesday, and that's when we'll see the first injury report.
- 9:06Speaker 1: So when he says we'll make a decision Tuesday, of course,
- 9:09Speaker 1: that's when you can start implementing, you know, strategizing the
- 9:11Speaker 1: game plan. So Wednesday, when they're all back boom, you're
- 9:13Speaker 1: hitting the ground running with whoever your starter is, getting
- 9:16Speaker 1: all the starters reps that week, you know, I know
- 9:19Speaker 1: there's probably not probably there is this feeling that maybe
- 9:25Speaker 1: you need to go ahead and give Jake Hayner a
- 9:27Speaker 1: try because it didn't go great with Rattler when he
- 9:29Speaker 1: had started the three games. It's important to remember, like
- 9:34Speaker 1: Spencer Rattler is a rookie quarterback in the NFL and
- 9:39Speaker 1: rookie quarterbacks struggle. I mean, Caleb Williams was the number
- 9:43Speaker 1: one pick.
- 9:43Speaker 3: In the draft.
- 9:44Speaker 1: He's the quote unquote transcendent talent, right and I know
- 9:48Speaker 1: that's overused, but it's something everybody says. He's the can't
- 9:51Speaker 1: miss prospect, the number one player. Caleb Williams right now
- 9:54Speaker 1: is a QBR of forty six point three in a
- 9:56Speaker 1: rating of eighty seven point eight. He's done some pretty
- 10:02Speaker 1: good things in the last few weeks in particular, but
- 10:06Speaker 1: it's been a struggle bus year for Caleb Williams, as
- 10:08Speaker 1: it is for most rookies. I mean, Peyton Manning is
- 10:10Speaker 1: one of the greatest quarterbacks ever. He threw more interceptions
- 10:14Speaker 1: as a rookie than any player in the history of
- 10:16Speaker 1: the NFL, and they went three and thirteen. It's hard
- 10:19Speaker 1: in the NFL for rookie quarterbacks. You could look at
- 10:21Speaker 1: Jayden Daniels, but he's the outlier. He's the exception, certainly
- 10:25Speaker 1: not the rule. Look at Bryce Young. Bryce Young was
- 10:28Speaker 1: miserable a year ago, so much so them at this
- 10:31Speaker 1: year's trade deadline, we're looking going, is he a bus Like?
- 10:34Speaker 1: Do they trade him at this year's trade deadline and
- 10:35Speaker 1: already move on? When all of a sudden in the
- 10:37Speaker 1: last month, Bryce Young looks like a different player, like
- 10:40Speaker 1: he's figured some things out. That's a year and a
- 10:41Speaker 1: half in for Bryce Young, Rattler's three games in, so
- 10:46Speaker 1: I'm not going to judge Rattler's long term ability based
- 10:49Speaker 1: on the outcome of three games where he was starting
- 10:51Speaker 1: behind a makeshift offensive line without some of his best weapons.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So I don't know which direction they go here, I
- 10:59Speaker 1: think for my perspective though, I'm looking at Han and
- 11:02Speaker 1: Rattler going, Okay, these coaches, this staff see these guys
- 11:06Speaker 1: every day. They see him in camp, they've seen him
- 11:07Speaker 1: in games, they seen him in game week and prep
- 11:09Speaker 1: and everything. Which guy has the higher upside? Which guy
- 11:13Speaker 1: do you think has the higher upside based on what
- 11:15Speaker 1: you've seen? And that's who you have to start, because
- 11:17Speaker 1: if you're going to get through it with these guys,
- 11:19Speaker 1: the early the young player struggles to get them to
- 11:22Speaker 1: a point where they're may be capable of being your
- 11:25Speaker 1: franchise quarterback, your starter in the NFL, like, you gotta
- 11:29Speaker 1: get him reps in an experience. But I'm not saying, oh man,
- 11:33Speaker 1: Rattler struggled for three games, so you punt on him
- 11:35Speaker 1: and you go with Hayner. I mean he's a rookie.
- 11:39Speaker 1: If you still see upside, then I say, well, Ratler
- 11:41Speaker 1: got that experience. He's got more experience now than Haynter.
- 11:44Speaker 1: You go with the more experienced backup who's been in
- 11:46Speaker 1: those situations. Let's see if he can continue to progress. Now, Roydes,
- 11:49Speaker 1: you get four games left, and I don't know if
- 11:53Speaker 1: Derek car is going to be able to go. But
- 11:55Speaker 1: when you look at total defense of your four remaining opponents,
- 11:58Speaker 1: Washington's twelfth, Green Bay thirteenth, the Raiders are fifteenth, and
- 12:03Speaker 1: the Bucks are twenty seventh. So you got three teams
- 12:06Speaker 1: around the middle a little better than the middle of
- 12:11Speaker 1: the NFL, and then the Bucks, who are one of
- 12:13Speaker 1: the worst defensively in the NFL. You get two games
- 12:16Speaker 1: at home, including this weekend. I know there's going to
- 12:20Speaker 1: be a contingent that wants to see Jake Hayner out
- 12:22Speaker 1: there because it didn't go great for Ratler. I'm more
- 12:25Speaker 1: of the belief to say, let me see Ratler again.
- 12:27Speaker 1: He got the opportunity. Now he had a chance to
- 12:29Speaker 1: sit and watch. What does it look like if he
- 12:31Speaker 1: gets to go again. Remember earlier this year Bryce Young
- 12:33Speaker 1: got benched, and I was coming back from that benching.
- 12:36Speaker 1: He's played better of late.
- 12:37Speaker 3: I mean, Brys Young had some Houdini.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Plays in that game yesterday against Philadelphia Eagles. So I'm
- 12:42Speaker 1: telling you it's gonna look great. But that's just where
- 12:45Speaker 1: I am here on Monday, just finding out the Derek
- 12:47Speaker 1: Carr injury a few hours ago. If Kart isn't able
- 12:50Speaker 1: to go, I think I'm rolling with Ratler again. The
- 12:53Speaker 1: coaching staff's already said they feel like he has the
- 12:55Speaker 1: higher upside. He's the one that gives him the best
- 12:57Speaker 1: chance to win. Let me see if that's a guy,
- 12:59Speaker 1: then go make play. Having had an opportunity to start,
- 13:02Speaker 1: now watch give them another go.
- 13:03Speaker 3: We'll see.
- 13:04Speaker 1: We'll obviously have the latest, says the week goes along.
