- 0:00Speaker 1: God, it is confronting when you see one. They're so gross.
- 0:04Speaker 2: You think Chewbacca had one?
- 0:05Speaker 1: It's an interesting question. I mean, he was very good
- 0:07Speaker 1: on the back. You wouldn't be surprised if he didn't
- 0:10Speaker 1: because he wasn't a normal dog-type animal.
- 0:15Speaker 2: He was dog-ish.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Yeah, but he walked on his back legs. You never
- 0:18Speaker 1: saw him get horny.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Show me perfect tennis. Wow. Oh, no way. All right,
- 0:29Speaker 2: welcome back to Tennis FM. You're here with Friggy and
- 0:32Speaker 2: the Tons.
- 0:33Speaker 1: The rebrand. The rebrand.
- 0:36Speaker 2: A huge week of tennis is underway. We are currently
- 0:39Speaker 2: recording in the midst of the Cincinnati Open, a Masters
- 0:43Speaker 2: 1000 event for the WTA and the ATP. The number
- 0:48Speaker 2: one hit of the week and the topic on everyone's mind,
- 0:50Speaker 2: this is Hodor, take it away. Friggy, that's me. Somebody
- 0:59Speaker 2: once told me my shoes were gonna troll me.
- 1:02Speaker 1: They're not the finest sneaks in the shed.
- 1:07Speaker 2: I was looking kind of dumb with my shoelaces and tongue.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Ripped out of my kicks like a dickhead.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Well, the points keep coming and they don't stop coming.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I'm not across the rules, chapel comes running.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Don't make sense not to play for fun.
- 1:23Speaker 1: No, it must be hard to take when you're up 5-1.
- 1:26Speaker 2: So much to do, swear words to shout.
- 1:28Speaker 1: So what's wrong with taking a timeout?
- 1:31Speaker 2: You'll never know if you don't go. Go!
- 1:33Speaker 1: You can't play if your laces blow.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Blow! Hey now, Rafa Hoda, get your shoes on, go play.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Hey now, Rafa Hoda, Hoda, Hoda, tie your laces, get.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Paid. And all that glitters is gold.
- 1:50Speaker 1: You gotta go high there. Only shoelaces break the mold. Yeah,
- 1:57Speaker 1: I mean, it is what it is. I mean, I
- 1:58Speaker 1: cannot control that. That was pretty awesome.
- 2:02Speaker 2: That was good. That was written by E-Roll, our producer.
- 2:05Speaker 2: He's outdone himself this week. Do we want Mike's social
- 2:09Speaker 2: faux pas of the week?
- 2:11Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. What have you done? What did you do?
- 2:16Speaker 2: You've been to my new apartment. It's a four-story walk-up, right?
- 2:20Speaker 1: It's like a penthouse at the top of like a
- 2:24Speaker 1: big city apartment. Big views over the water.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I'm in my ivory tower.
- 2:28Speaker 1: You are in your ivory tower, yeah.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Thank you. And we recently bought some furniture and we
- 2:35Speaker 2: paid for them to bring it up to the apartment.
- 2:37Speaker 1: You paid people?
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yeah, paid people.
- 2:38Speaker 1: To do manual labor?
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, why not? I'm supporting the salt of
- 2:43Speaker 2: the earth. And what we paid for was for them
- 2:47Speaker 2: to bring it up to the apartment and take it
- 2:49Speaker 2: out of the boxes and take all the boxes away.
- 2:52Speaker 2: So they show up. They see, even though I'm sure
- 2:55Speaker 2: it was told to them that was four stories.
- 2:58Speaker 1: That you were a celebrity. He was told he's a celebrity.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Don't be weird around him.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. No eye contact. I put all these
- 3:05Speaker 2: stipulations in there. Of course, yeah. Don't breathe near my wife.
- 3:10Speaker 1: That's not a celebrity thing, right? That's just another rule
- 3:12Speaker 1: you have.
- 3:12Speaker 2: That's for everybody.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:14Speaker 2: They get to the apartment building and they see it's
- 3:17Speaker 2: four stories and they say, oh, we're not doing that. Yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 2: And he goes, no human can do this.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Oh.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And I go, we just moved in and everything got
- 3:27Speaker 2: up there, a fridge, a couch.
- 3:27Speaker 1: I like how he said no human.
- 3:29Speaker 2: He said no human can do this. And I said, no,
- 3:31Speaker 2: it's very much possible. And the boxes were not bigger
- 3:35Speaker 2: than a fridge or a couch or a washing machine, right?
- 3:38Speaker 2: And he goes, no, no, no. He goes, company policy,
- 3:41Speaker 2: we could take it up two levels. Two levels and
- 3:44Speaker 2: then that's it. And I go, how about you take
- 3:47Speaker 2: it up two levels, go for lunch, and then come
- 3:50Speaker 2: back and take it up another two levels.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Policy reset. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:53Speaker 2: And then he gets mad.
- 3:54Speaker 1: He cracked it.
- 3:55Speaker 2: He's like, absolutely. That's ridiculous. You know, he's very upset.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Did you say what?
- 4:01Speaker 1: I'll let you breathe near my wife. My final deal.
- 4:06Speaker 2: So he was adamant then after me making that suggestion
- 4:12Speaker 2: of him taking it up two levels, taking a break
- 4:14Speaker 2: and two more. He took the boxes up two levels,
- 4:18Speaker 2: left them on the landing there on the second floor
- 4:21Speaker 2: and then stormed out. No.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Yeah. No.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yeah. No.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Wait, are you paying these people?
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Well, then they can't.
- 4:28Speaker 2: We got a refund.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, obviously.
- 4:31Speaker 2: But it was just insane. I'm in the right there, right?
- 4:34Speaker 2: Maybe I was a bit dickish.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I think you are in the right. But do you
- 4:37Speaker 1: remember what happened when I came to see your new
- 4:41Speaker 1: apartment for.
- 4:42Speaker 2: The first time? You were winded.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Well, no. Do you remember what happened when we opened
- 4:45Speaker 1: the door? What was greeting us in the lobby downstairs?
- 4:49Speaker 2: What was it?
- 4:49Speaker 1: I don't know, but two of the heaviest boxes I've
- 4:51Speaker 1: ever seen in my life.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Oh, you helped me.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And then you were like, just grab that, would you?
- 4:56Speaker 1: Can I say, it's a long way up. It is
- 4:58Speaker 1: a long way up.
- 4:59Speaker 2: The most egregious part of the story, which I haven't
- 5:02Speaker 2: told you yet, is when he put the box down
- 5:06Speaker 2: and stormed off, I called him a coward.
- 5:09Speaker 1: You called him a coward.
- 5:10Speaker 2: I said, nice one, coward.
- 5:12Speaker 1: And at any point here, are you like, I'm just
- 5:14Speaker 1: taking the boxes myself?
- 5:16Speaker 2: Well, he was like, he might as well do the
- 5:18Speaker 2: two levels as his company policy.
- 5:21Speaker 1: And then get the refund. But then did you lift
- 5:23Speaker 1: it up the last two levels?
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Okay. I made my wife do it later. Anyways, that's
- 5:28Speaker 2: my social faux pas of the week. I can't even
- 5:31Speaker 2: make it tennis adjacent.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Well, I've got something, and this is quite exciting. Last
- 5:35Speaker 1: week on the show, I wrote a poem for Yannick
- 5:38Speaker 1: Sinner's birthday.
- 5:39Speaker 2: You did.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And it was beautiful. And I think, and we know
- 5:43Speaker 1: Sinner listens to the show, but I think because of
- 5:44Speaker 1: like managers and then the AO are pretty tight-lipped, He
- 5:48Speaker 1: struggles to kind of get in contact with us sometimes.
- 5:51Speaker 1: But I feel like he put a message out.
- 5:52Speaker 2: He's probably going through to the requests on your Instagram DMs.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I need to check that a little bit.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Check that folder.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Anyway, he still, like, he sent us a message. He
- 6:01Speaker 1: put up a post on Instagram. We've got it right here.
- 6:03Speaker 1: He's looking pretty happy. It says, thank you for all
- 6:05Speaker 1: the nice birthday wishes. So nice of him to give
- 6:09Speaker 1: us a shout out.
- 6:10Speaker 2: You're welcome. Cute.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah, very cute. Thank you for the birthday wishes. And
- 6:14Speaker 1: I'm happy to do that as well for a good
- 6:16Speaker 1: friend of the show at any point. There's a squirrel
- 6:17Speaker 1: on his shoulder. I don't know what that means. Thank you, Yannick,
- 6:21Speaker 1: for getting back in touch, mate.
- 6:22Speaker 2: You're welcome, Yannick. Happy birthday, brother. We miss you. The
- 6:27Speaker 2: Cincinnati Open is in full swing.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Full swing.
- 6:32Speaker 2: It has been scorchingly hot over there. And... One thing
- 6:36Speaker 2: I want to talk about, I've actually never been to Cincinnati.
- 6:39Speaker 1: You've never been to Cincinnati?
- 6:40Speaker 2: No, we would love a man on the ground over there.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I can ask some friends in the States.
- 6:44Speaker 1: We don't even have Yannick, our good friend. He can't
- 6:46Speaker 1: even be our man on the ground.
- 6:47Speaker 2: He's not even there. But we want, like we had
- 6:49Speaker 2: a man on the ground in Toronto, my good friend
- 6:51Speaker 2: Tom Schaefer. If you're in Cincinnati and you're going to
- 6:55Speaker 2: the tennis tournament, write in to podlabor.com. at tennis.com.au.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Podlaver at tennis.com.au.
- 7:03Speaker 2: And let us know how the tournament is. We know
- 7:05Speaker 2: the conditions are scorching and everyone's humid and hot. We'll
- 7:09Speaker 2: get to Djokovic in a second. But one thing I
- 7:11Speaker 2: want to talk about Well, my only connection to Cincinnati
- 7:14Speaker 2: is that when I was at KU, Kansas University, there
- 7:18Speaker 2: was a guy that lived in one of the share
- 7:21Speaker 2: houses that a lot of my friends were at. And
- 7:23Speaker 2: he was Matty from Cincinnati. And that's how he would
- 7:26Speaker 2: introduce himself.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Matty from Cincinnati.
- 7:28Speaker 2: And I never liked him.
- 7:29Speaker 1: This is a skyline cheese, Coney. It's got a delicious
- 7:32Speaker 1: hot dog, Cincinnati-style chili, and a big mound of cheese.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I have to tell, like, have you heard of the
- 7:37Speaker 2: skyline chili that everyone loves in Cincinnati?
- 7:40Speaker 1: No, I don't know a lot about Cincinnati, except it's
- 7:42Speaker 1: one of those American words that's pretty fun to say, Cincinnati. Right.
- 7:46Speaker 2: In Ohio, and Ohio is now slang for Generation Alpha
- 7:50Speaker 2: to mean weird or awkward.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Oh, Ohio is? Yeah. Oh, is that connected to the state?
- 7:57Speaker 2: I have no idea what it means or why they
- 7:59Speaker 2: did it. Cool, dude. Regional food stuff. The Skyline Chili is...
- 8:04Speaker 2: I've never had it, but it's a thin cinnamon and
- 8:07Speaker 2: chocolate spiced meat sauce served over spaghetti.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Cinnamon and chocolate.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Spiced meat sauce served over spaghetti. This is the.
- 8:17Speaker 1: That's a few words in it. Meat sauce. Yeah. Meat sauce.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Like a gravy?
- 8:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:23Speaker 1: A chocolatey... cinnamon gravy.
- 8:26Speaker 2: So it's been described as the worst regional food stuff
- 8:30Speaker 2: in America and abominable garbage gravy.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, that is what I thought immediately.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Yeah. But that's not even man. Some of the, I've
- 8:40Speaker 2: had a few of these things. I haven't had what's
- 8:42Speaker 2: voted the worst. The worst in America for regional food
- 8:45Speaker 2: is Minnesota's a loot fisk and they have a strong
- 8:48Speaker 2: Scandinavian population in Minnesota. That's dried whitefish soaked in caustic lye.
- 8:55Speaker 2: And it turns into a quivering gelatinous mass.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Oh, gelatinous.
- 9:02Speaker 2: What's wrong?
- 9:02Speaker 1: Why would someone do that?
- 9:03Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 9:04Speaker 1: A white fish, you can do like a nice creamy
- 9:06Speaker 1: sauce over that. Why would you do like a kind
- 9:08Speaker 1: of a rubbery? Oh, it's kind of making me feel yuck.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And you've tried that one.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I haven't tried that one. I have tried this because
- 9:15Speaker 2: this is a big Midwest thing. Jell-O salad, which is
- 9:18Speaker 2: a congealed mix of gelatin, fruit, and miniature marshmallows. That's
- 9:22Speaker 2: a big dessert thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I haven't tried this. Scrapple,
- 9:27Speaker 2: which is the northeastern states, eats scrapple, a pan-fried loaf
- 9:31Speaker 2: of pork scraps and cornmeal mush. I am like, you know,
- 9:36Speaker 2: my body's starting to go. I think I'm turning into
- 9:38Speaker 2: a quivering gelatinous mass.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Slowly by the day. Don't go up north. They'll eat you.
- 9:44Speaker 1: They'll put Mike G on a stick.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Anyway, Cincinnati, the tournament is going, and let's check in
- 9:52Speaker 2: on live scores. We're recording this early, as I will
- 9:54Speaker 2: be in Perth next week, but currently, Demonar just beat
- 10:00Speaker 2: Arthur Ferry, Kaboli over blocks and three cents. Tarante continues
- 10:07Speaker 2: his form. He's had a great summer so far, and
- 10:10Speaker 2: I guess this Tarante brings us to talking about Beating Djokovic.
- 10:17Speaker 1: One for Argentina.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Yeah, you're a big Argentina guy.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Well, you know, I like to support them when Australia
- 10:23Speaker 1: get knocked out. I would say the Argentinian men definitely
- 10:27Speaker 1: better overall than the Australian men at the moment when
- 10:30Speaker 1: it comes to world tennis. But a big victory with Djokovic. Now,
- 10:37Speaker 1: this is my theory at the moment. Djokovic, he is
- 10:40Speaker 1: saying he didn't feel well due to the heat. Well,
- 10:43Speaker 1: he's got a sickness that gets worse. when it's really hot,
- 10:45Speaker 1: which does sound like every sickness there is. Is global
- 10:50Speaker 1: warming ruining tennis?
- 10:53Speaker 2: I mean, let's check in with Terrence. Atman, is global
- 10:58Speaker 2: warming real? Yeah, I mean, I think he's 39 and
- 11:03Speaker 2: you start to feel the conditions.
- 11:04Speaker 1: A lot more. Yeah, it just gets too hot.
- 11:06Speaker 2: And he's like, oh, I have a health condition that
- 11:08Speaker 2: makes me wilt in the heat and the humidity. And
- 11:10Speaker 2: it's apparently, by all accounts, like crazy temperature. heat and
- 11:13Speaker 2: humidity in Cincinnati at the moment. This is Djokovic. He
- 11:17Speaker 2: was on all fours at one point. He threw up.
- 11:21Speaker 2: They had to hold like a little towel in front
- 11:24Speaker 2: of him to give him some privacy while he's throwing up.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Well, that is a great photo, though.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Don't you think? It's like a statue.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Well, without the lines, the court really looks like a
- 11:34Speaker 1: perfect backdrop.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:35Speaker 1: It's like a perfect blue. I mean, I know he's
- 11:37Speaker 1: having one of the worst moments of his life there,
- 11:39Speaker 1: but I like the kit as well.
- 11:42Speaker 2: So he's playing the Argentinian Tarante, who I think hit
- 11:46Speaker 2: one of the fastest forehands of the year.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 11:52Speaker 2: He hits it down the middle of the court and
- 11:53Speaker 2: Djokovic still doesn't have a play on it because it's
- 11:55Speaker 2: just moving that fast.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Yeah, but he's so like... There's probably a mirage in
- 12:00Speaker 1: front of you.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:02Speaker 1: The forehand's coming through like a fountain that's just like
- 12:05Speaker 1: appeared in front of you.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Djokovic, after the match, so he lost in three, said,
- 12:12Speaker 2: it's just the condition that I have health-wise. It's been
- 12:15Speaker 2: bothering me for the past couple of years. And a
- 12:18Speaker 2: lot of issues, especially when it's humid and hot. So
- 12:22Speaker 2: New York is in a couple weeks, and New York
- 12:25Speaker 2: in late August, early September is disgustingly hot.
- 12:28Speaker 1: It's disgustingly hot. And it's also been heating up. I
- 12:31Speaker 1: feel like there's heat. Because of? Well, global warming. Which
- 12:34Speaker 1: is debatable or whatever. But I feel like the heat
- 12:39Speaker 1: at the end of summer... in these big cities it
- 12:43Speaker 1: feels like it's in the buildings you know and like
- 12:46Speaker 1: i just feel like that heat it's just gonna be
- 12:48Speaker 1: you won't be able to escape it so.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I mean here's rublev who was struggling with the heat so.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Bad his head in the ice box.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yeah a real dunk he really dunked his head in there.
- 13:00Speaker 1: That's what i mean is this a global this is
- 13:02Speaker 1: global warming this is what it looks like.
- 13:04Speaker 2: American summers, though, are this bad, especially through the Midwest.
- 13:09Speaker 2: I mean, I grew up with it. And Rublev's a redhead.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Yeah, so he just can't handle it.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Just some other live scores, because we are in the
- 13:16Speaker 2: round of 32. When you listen to this, it'll be,
- 13:20Speaker 2: I mean, the tournament will basically be over. Zverev just
- 13:24Speaker 2: took the first set against Terence Atman. We love Atman. Atman. Hodar,
- 13:29Speaker 2: which we'll get to in a second, easily beat Tabilo. Tarante,
- 13:33Speaker 2: like I said, continues winning. And Tommy Paul is playing
- 13:36Speaker 2: Vallejo very soon. Mensik took out Australia's... Rinky Hijikata.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Very exciting as well, though. Chris O'Connell through to the
- 13:45Speaker 1: third round, Mike. And, yes, Kath Baroud may have retired
- 13:52Speaker 1: and granted him access to the third round. But is
- 13:56Speaker 1: this the heavens clearing?
- 13:58Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 13:59Speaker 1: We're looking at a kind of unknown situation coming into
- 14:02Speaker 1: the U.S.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Open. Right.
- 14:03Speaker 1: We're looking for someone to get behind, someone to make
- 14:06Speaker 1: a run, a historic run. Is it Chris O'Connell?
- 14:10Speaker 2: He plays Jao Fonseca next. Yes. And he is going
- 14:13Speaker 2: to get run.
- 14:14Speaker 1: We don't know. He's a 19-year-old Brazilian. He probably can
- 14:20Speaker 1: deal with the heat. You've got to think.
- 14:22Speaker 2: You're listening to this in the future. You know I am, right?
- 14:27Speaker 1: It's not often that Mike gets it wrong, but on
- 14:29Speaker 1: this occasion, he totally did. Chris O'Connell, one. Quivering gelatinous mass, zero. Look,
- 14:36Speaker 1: we don't know. Hopefully Chris is still in there. He's
- 14:39Speaker 1: ranked 129th in the world at the moment. I think
- 14:42Speaker 1: he's got to get to 107th. to not have to
- 14:45Speaker 1: go through qualifying to get into the US Open. I
- 14:48Speaker 1: don't know, even if he wins in Cincinnati, I don't
- 14:50Speaker 1: know if that gets him across the line. But look,
- 14:54Speaker 1: all I'm saying, Carlito, we don't know. It's up in
- 14:57Speaker 1: the air. Djokovic is struggling to walk. It's fair if
- 15:00Speaker 1: I think he's got some demons in his head. Sinner,
- 15:02Speaker 1: we don't know what's going to happen. Is this Chris
- 15:04Speaker 1: O'Connell's time?
- 15:07Speaker 2: No.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Moving on. All right.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Well, the other big result, Shelton just won in Montreal
- 15:13Speaker 2: and then goes out in the first round.
- 15:16Speaker 1: What's that all about?
- 15:17Speaker 2: It's got to be fatigue, right? Yeah.
- 15:18Speaker 1: But to get on, we were really behind him in
- 15:21Speaker 1: that last episode.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I still am. This has really made you drop off?
- 15:26Speaker 1: I just think it's like, yeah, but I feel like,
- 15:28Speaker 1: you know, I thought if he's going to have the form, yes,
- 15:30Speaker 1: he could be tired, but he might get through to
- 15:31Speaker 1: the fourth round or something.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I don't know. It's like pretty early to go out.
- 15:35Speaker 1: But I guess it's so much tennis in such a
- 15:37Speaker 1: short period of time.
- 15:39Speaker 2: I think this bodes well for him because now he
- 15:42Speaker 2: gets a longer break before the US starts.
- 15:44Speaker 1: And he's still got a few games in. I see
- 15:46Speaker 1: what you're saying. They can't simulate match intensity and training
- 15:52Speaker 1: in any way. Otherwise, I think you would see a
- 15:55Speaker 1: lot of people skipping some tournaments.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Yeah. And I mean, Djokovic said the same thing. He
- 15:59Speaker 2: was like, he felt great going into Cincinnati. And then
- 16:02Speaker 2: all of a sudden, when you're in the pressure of
- 16:04Speaker 2: match play... And then obviously the heat and everything, it
- 16:07Speaker 2: cooked him and he was done.
- 16:08Speaker 1: What if you started a group chat? So say you're
- 16:11Speaker 1: on the tour and you're in the top 10 in
- 16:13Speaker 1: the world or whatever. You get a group chat of
- 16:14Speaker 1: like 20 of the best guys and you're like, let's
- 16:17Speaker 1: play and we're just going to play as hard as
- 16:19Speaker 1: we can against each other. That way you could sort
- 16:21Speaker 1: of keep your fitness and build it up without having
- 16:23Speaker 1: to like destroy yourself traveling around playing a tournament with
- 16:26Speaker 1: seemingly no breaks, no holidays.
- 16:28Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 16:29Speaker 1: I'm just saying it's an idea.
- 16:32Speaker 2: What if?
- 16:33Speaker 1: Well, I'm just saying. It would be like.
- 16:35Speaker 2: It would be a punishing way to be a 45-year-old man.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Well, be a 45-year-old man, but you don't have to
- 16:41Speaker 1: be a 45-year-old. I'm saying, so let's look at Shelton, right,
- 16:45Speaker 1: for example. So he wins in Canada.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Probably that night he's on a plane to Cincinnati. He's
- 16:52Speaker 1: there and then he's got to back up the next
- 16:54Speaker 1: day to play his first round.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:57Speaker 1: That's brutal. But it's the only way he can do
- 16:59Speaker 1: it because he needs to get the match practice or
- 17:01Speaker 1: get the simulation of being under the pressure. What if
- 17:04Speaker 1: he's in a group chat, right? And then you've got
- 17:06Speaker 1: someone else in there who's like, you know, an elite player.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I don't know if it's Djokovic. So they sub in?
- 17:12Speaker 1: No. So then you both have three days off and
- 17:14Speaker 1: then you meet at a court and you're like, we're
- 17:16Speaker 1: playing as hard as we can. Right. And so you
- 17:19Speaker 1: get the match practice without having to kind of kill
- 17:22Speaker 1: yourself with this schedule. Right.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Hey, you lost me with the whole group chat element.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Well, it doesn't have to be a group chat. Someone
- 17:30Speaker 1: else could organise the logistics. My point is I'm trying
- 17:33Speaker 1: to find a way where people aren't tired and their
- 17:34Speaker 1: bodies aren't breaking down because at the moment no one
- 17:36Speaker 1: is physically fit enough to get through a season.
- 17:38Speaker 2: I see what you're saying. I do. But, like, also
- 17:41Speaker 2: Djokovic is 39 and Shelton's played a ton of tennis.
- 17:45Speaker 2: I do see what you're saying, but I just think
- 17:47Speaker 2: the tour... As the schedule is.
- 17:50Speaker 1: This guy, he can't see out of, like, he's too
- 17:53Speaker 1: locked into his brain. Look at some other opinions here.
- 17:56Speaker 2: You're talking about like an app.
- 17:58Speaker 1: You can just log in and go. Yeah, I can
- 18:01Speaker 1: go for a game. He finds a court on the
- 18:03Speaker 1: Tennis Australia website.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:05Speaker 1: He goes, okay, cool, Clifton Hill. I'm going to go
- 18:07Speaker 1: down there, see if I can have a pick-up game somewhere.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Right, right, right, right. All right. Well, this and your
- 18:12Speaker 2: Redheads-only tournament are going to take off, I'll tell you, man.
- 18:16Speaker 1: I think the Redhead idea could be good.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Um, should we talk Shoe Gate?
- 18:21Speaker 1: Shoe Gate is fantastic. People are writing songs about it.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:25Speaker 1: What's your take? Is this in the, um, what's the saying?
- 18:28Speaker 1: Spirit of the game?
- 18:30Speaker 2: No. I mean, is it gamesmanship? Should it be allowed?
- 18:35Speaker 2: Rafa Hodar.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I feel like everyone's favorite as well, by the way.
- 18:38Speaker 1: I feel like he's getting a lot of fans. People
- 18:39Speaker 1: love the guy.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Well, okay. So Rafa Hodar has had several matches where
- 18:43Speaker 2: his shoelaces have been breaking. When the other guy has
- 18:47Speaker 2: momentum or is in the lead, it's also happened when
- 18:49Speaker 2: Hodar's in the lead. And he's got to fix his
- 18:53Speaker 2: shoe in the middle of a game. And he takes
- 18:57Speaker 2: time to sit there and get his shoes that aren't
- 19:00Speaker 2: broken shoelaces. Disrupts the other guy's momentum. Most recently against
- 19:06Speaker 2: Denis Shapovalov in Cincinnati. And Shapovalov looked for all purposes
- 19:11Speaker 2: like he was going to win the match. He was
- 19:13Speaker 2: up 5-1 in the decider. served for it twice, couldn't
- 19:16Speaker 2: get it done, double faulted on the match points. A
- 19:18Speaker 2: lot of this is on Chapo, but.
- 19:21Speaker 1: I think we blame the shoelaces.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Yeah. He did it in the Dallas final against Fritz.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Hodar stopped to fix his shoes. He did it against
- 19:31Speaker 2: Nakashima in Montreal. It's a pattern of behavior that is
- 19:37Speaker 2: making him seem a little bit like a villain.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I kind of love it because it is like, how
- 19:42Speaker 1: do you truly say that this guy's doing it on purpose?
- 19:47Speaker 1: You've got to tie your shoelaces up. It's like number
- 19:50Speaker 1: one rule. If you're a parent and you see a
- 19:51Speaker 1: kid walking around With their shoelaces undone.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:54Speaker 1: If your shoelaces are undone and you're walking down the street,
- 19:56Speaker 1: someone will stop you and be like, hey, by the way,
- 19:58Speaker 1: your shoelace is undone. You've got to tie it up.
- 20:00Speaker 1: You can't have someone playing. You can't say you're faking it.
- 20:03Speaker 1: You're going to have to play with your shoelaces undone.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Well, because there's physical evidence. It's not. They're snapping. The
- 20:09Speaker 2: shoelaces are breaking.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Well, then this is a shoelace supplier issue.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Or they've somehow engineered these shoelaces to do it at
- 20:16Speaker 1: very tense moments in matches.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I think it is a surface.
- 20:20Speaker 1: But are they snapping because he's pulling? They're not just
- 20:23Speaker 1: snapping midpoint.
- 20:24Speaker 2: He's sliding on a hard cord in such a way
- 20:28Speaker 2: that it's catching, I guess, the string of the shoe.
- 20:32Speaker 2: And then they're breaking. He's breaking his shoes constantly. And
- 20:36Speaker 2: then having to get, there's that picture of him like
- 20:38Speaker 2: surrounded by shoes. It's crazy, right? And they, a lot
- 20:44Speaker 2: of people are arguing that it shouldn't be allowed that
- 20:48Speaker 2: if you break a shoelace, because this is an equipment issue,
- 20:52Speaker 2: you shouldn't be allowed to then fix it until after
- 20:55Speaker 2: the game is over, right?
- 20:57Speaker 1: No, but then it's a safety issue.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Well, right, but that'll force the issue. If you go,
- 21:00Speaker 2: this is.
- 21:01Speaker 1: That's a million degrees. You ever stepped on some hot tarmac-
- 21:04Speaker 1: On a 40 degree.
- 21:05Speaker 2: I'm not saying he's got to play barefoot. I'm saying
- 21:09Speaker 2: it'll force Adidas or whoever his shoe sponsor is to
- 21:13Speaker 2: give him proper durable shoelaces.
- 21:15Speaker 1: But how is it only his shoelaces? What's he got
- 21:18Speaker 1: the most psycho foot that's swelling?
- 21:20Speaker 2: I think it's a.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Look, I don't understand. Is he on a plane when
- 21:24Speaker 1: everyone else is not on a plane and his foot's expanding?
- 21:26Speaker 2: Yeah, his nickname is going to be Rafa Deep Vein
- 21:29Speaker 2: Thrombosis Odar.
- 21:32Speaker 1: What I would investigate, I would want to get my
- 21:35Speaker 1: eyes on, so let's get some of his shoelaces. He
- 21:38Speaker 1: has to present them before.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Because is he putting little cuts in the shoelaces so
- 21:43Speaker 1: he knows that, you know, under tension, eventually they're going
- 21:46Speaker 1: to snap? Because if no one else is having shoelace issues,
- 21:50Speaker 1: it is a baffling scenario.
- 21:52Speaker 2: It is.
- 21:53Speaker 1: A baffling scenario. And the answer to me is not
- 21:58Speaker 1: the guy can't replace shoelaces. That is insanity.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Unfortunately, the answer is probably what my parents would threaten
- 22:05Speaker 1: me with when I was four years old and I
- 22:06Speaker 1: was struggling to tie up my shoelaces is, you're going
- 22:08Speaker 1: back to Velcro.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Oh, I would love to see some Velcro shoes out there, dude. Oh, man.
- 22:17Speaker 2: But then the Velcro's breaking, you know?
- 22:18Speaker 1: The Velcro's not going to break.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Velcro could break.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Is Velcro not as strong as the shoelace tie?
- 22:24Speaker 2: Would I look like a shoe engineer?
- 22:26Speaker 1: Yeah, but also, do you know what else is back in?
- 22:28Speaker 1: I wear the Solomon. which were a climbing shoe. And
- 22:31Speaker 1: now due to like little inner city pieces of shit
- 22:34Speaker 1: like me, they're very fashionable and everyone's wearing them, but
- 22:37Speaker 1: they don't have the shoelaces in the sense of like
- 22:40Speaker 1: tie up. They just have the drawstring pull up and
- 22:44Speaker 1: then you have a thing that comes down and it
- 22:46Speaker 1: locks it. It kind of like squeezes it in tight,
- 22:48Speaker 1: but still a fabric thing. And then you kind of,
- 22:50Speaker 1: then it has a little patch where you hide the
- 22:52Speaker 1: thing up. These are for climbing. These are outdoor shoes.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Maybe that's an option he needs to look into.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Well, I mean, because it's happened now in so many matches,
- 23:00Speaker 2: and I've been in the Shapovalov match, it happened twice.
- 23:04Speaker 2: The chair umpire addressed the crowd and he goes, Rafa
- 23:08Speaker 2: Hodar has to fix his shoes again. And the crowd
- 23:12Speaker 2: is like, ugh. And it's like.
- 23:15Speaker 1: What size foot is he? I'm looking that up.
- 23:17Speaker 2: Yeah, what does that have to do?
- 23:18Speaker 1: Well, because maybe his foot is too big for conventional shoes.
- 23:22Speaker 2: No, it's the nature of his slide on the hard
- 23:25Speaker 2: court that is snapping the shoelaces. But you're right. You
- 23:28Speaker 2: could argue both sides of the... Say, it's the physical
- 23:31Speaker 2: evidence is there. His shoes are breaking. He doesn't want
- 23:33Speaker 2: to get injured. But then also, finish the game.
- 23:35Speaker 1: You're not going to believe this. According to AI, he
- 23:38Speaker 1: has not publicly... Shared his specific shoe size.
- 23:41Speaker 2: There's a whole shoe conspiracy.
- 23:43Speaker 1: This is big.
- 23:44Speaker 2: This goes all the way to the top.
- 23:48Speaker 1: I don't know, but it's like there's got to be some.
- 23:51Speaker 1: You think it's the slide.
- 23:52Speaker 2: This goes all the way to the high tops. Sorry.
- 23:58Speaker 1: I wonder. He's not the first person to slide. He's
- 24:00Speaker 1: not sliding in a completely unique way. Shoes should be
- 24:04Speaker 1: able to handle this.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Something else is at play. I would want to see
- 24:08Speaker 1: the shoelaces. Yeah. I would want to. So.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Who is the shoe sponsor?
- 24:12Speaker 1: You know, you're not breaking.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Okay.
- 24:13Speaker 1: So you can get. I don't know. Have you ever
- 24:15Speaker 1: done much sailing in your time, Mike?
- 24:17Speaker 2: Yeah, a bit.
- 24:18Speaker 1: There you go. You can get rope.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:20Speaker 1: And the amount of weight, this rope, you can hold
- 24:22Speaker 1: a ton of weight. Yeah. You can pull up an
- 24:24Speaker 1: anchor with some sailing rope. There has to be some
- 24:27Speaker 1: shoelace strength. that could handle this six-foot-three Spaniard.
- 24:32Speaker 2: NASA technology.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Doesn't have to be, I would argue, athlete's foot. Have
- 24:36Speaker 1: it on their shelf right now that you could go
- 24:39Speaker 1: and buy that could handle some sliding.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay, so this is Adidas. So we got to
- 24:45Speaker 2: write to the CEO of Adidas and be like, what
- 24:47Speaker 2: the hell is going on, man? And the model worn
- 24:50Speaker 2: is the Adidas Adizero Uber Sonic. Get some Uber laces.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Uber laces. I wonder, it's not good business for Adidas either.
- 24:59Speaker 1: That's the thing. It's not a good look.
- 25:00Speaker 2: No.
- 25:01Speaker 1: This isn't happening to Wilson's staff.
- 25:03Speaker 2: But it doesn't happen in matches like he just rolled
- 25:06Speaker 2: to below 6-2-6-1 and there was no shoelace issue. So
- 25:10Speaker 2: it's these three setters.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Yeah, well, he's probably.
- 25:12Speaker 2: There's more wear and tear, of course.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Or it's like the moments matter more, so he's cutting
- 25:17Speaker 1: the shoelaces there to fuck with the momentum.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Change of ends, he's like secretly giving little nicks.
- 25:24Speaker 1: No, no, no, no. I think pre-match... He's in his
- 25:27Speaker 1: hotel room. He has his shoelaces lined up on the table.
- 25:31Speaker 1: He has a pair of sewing scissors and he's putting
- 25:34Speaker 1: little cuts in the shoelaces, right? Yeah. So then that means,
- 25:38Speaker 1: so then like the amount of the shoelaces hanging on
- 25:41Speaker 1: by a thread, then when he knows once, like it's
- 25:44Speaker 1: going to break at some point, like because there's weak
- 25:46Speaker 1: points in the shoelace.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 25:48Speaker 1: And then that means he'll have to take the shoelace.
- 25:50Speaker 1: He can use that time. The momentum, he can rest.
- 25:53Speaker 1: That will be the first theory I think is, I
- 25:57Speaker 1: think that's the most plausible theory.
- 25:58Speaker 2: That's some wild speculation coming from Sam Taunton.
- 26:06Speaker 1: To me, it's a pretty crazy coincidence.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Just the shoes for him are somehow not as strong
- 26:13Speaker 1: and the shoelaces are not as strong as other people.
- 26:16Speaker 2: So what's the, here's him playing Chapavala. This is the match.
- 26:20Speaker 2: when Chapo was up 4-1 in the third set decider. And, yeah,
- 26:26Speaker 2: I mean, watch his movement. Does it seem to be
- 26:29Speaker 2: extreme or anything? Not in that point right there. But, yeah,
- 26:34Speaker 2: it's a big foot.
- 26:35Speaker 1: It's a weird-looking shoe. No disrespect to Adidas with what
- 26:38Speaker 1: they've done. It's a strange-looking shoe.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:40Speaker 1: It looks very like it's got a lot on the sole.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Yeah. So his shoe bag.
- 26:45Speaker 1: They're thick socks too.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:48Speaker 2: His tennis bag must be mainly shoes.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Have we got proof that the shoe... Oh, what's this
- 26:53Speaker 1: orthotic that's going in? Maybe that could be.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Yeah, so there's the snap shoelace. I mean, the evidence
- 27:01Speaker 2: is there.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Yeah, but we have no... That's not ruling out that
- 27:06Speaker 1: he's tried to cut the shoe.
- 27:07Speaker 2: There, he's done the shoe again. And then, yep, he goes...
- 27:13Speaker 2: So we just miss Shapo walking up to him being like,
- 27:15Speaker 2: what the hell, man, your shoes again? And he goes,
- 27:17Speaker 2: and you're drinking water. So he's taking it as a
- 27:20Speaker 2: full break.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Well, you've got to have a drink while you're there.
- 27:24Speaker 2: I think the solution is.
- 27:25Speaker 1: What, so you're going to say he's not allowed to
- 27:26Speaker 1: have a drink of water?
- 27:27Speaker 2: So he's complaining to the judge, he complains... You know,
- 27:30Speaker 2: Chapo's obviously concerned he's choking, and he did choke.
- 27:34Speaker 1: He did choke. It did really turn the momentum around.
- 27:38Speaker 1: I don't know, it's kind of desperate measures here. The
- 27:40Speaker 1: integrity of the game's in question.
- 27:41Speaker 2: It's like, people are starting to boo him. Here is
- 27:44Speaker 2: a theory that he's being now touted as the third
- 27:48Speaker 2: guy to sink Coraz, right? As much as Djokovic was
- 27:54Speaker 2: the party spoiler to Federer and Nadal. Is he falling
- 27:59Speaker 2: now into this villain-esque role that Djokovic played?
- 28:04Speaker 1: We need a villain. There's no other way to look
- 28:07Speaker 1: at it. You need some kind of evilness, I think,
- 28:09Speaker 1: to prop the sport up. It would be good.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:13Speaker 1: It would be good, although I think he's got a
- 28:15Speaker 1: friendly face. What about this for a rule? Each player
- 28:17Speaker 1: gets two pairs of shoelaces. Or shoes, maybe.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:21Speaker 1: And just, it's like tough titties, I guess, if you
- 28:23Speaker 1: go through it.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's an equipment issue. And if it happens.
- 28:26Speaker 1: And then you've got to play barefoot.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Well, I mean.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Like, maybe you have to. And then if someone gets injured,
- 28:30Speaker 1: it's like you should, you've just got to be more
- 28:32Speaker 1: responsible with your shoes.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Finish the game. At least finish the game. Yeah, and
- 28:36Speaker 2: then you can change shoes. But in the middle of
- 28:38Speaker 2: a game, stop letting it happen. Anyways, we'll see if
- 28:42Speaker 2: ShoeGate continues in the controversy there. In the WTA side
- 28:48Speaker 2: of the draw, let's see what is happening right now.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Svitolina won yesterday, saving seven match points to go through
- 28:59Speaker 2: to the next round. She beat Valentova, saving... Seven match
- 29:05Speaker 2: points in the second set, and then Begling Valentova in
- 29:09Speaker 2: the third. Goff won a three-setter against Samsonova. Sloane Stephens
- 29:14Speaker 2: is looking good. Again, she beat Potapova. Some of the
- 29:18Speaker 2: names that have been kind of cruising through a lot
- 29:21Speaker 2: of the draws are doing well. Eva Jovic, Marta Kostiak
- 29:25Speaker 2: beating Sofia Kennan. And then as we speak, There's some
- 29:29Speaker 2: matches happening. The Pagula just beat Emma Navarro in an
- 29:34Speaker 2: All-American affair. Linda Noskova, good to see she's still in form,
- 29:39Speaker 2: taking out Clara Tau. Yeah, and unfortunately, Maya Kvalinska lost
- 29:44Speaker 2: to Diana Schneider. But Bakina backing up.
- 29:49Speaker 1: She's cruising through.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Getting to the final in Toronto. Won in straight sets.
- 29:54Speaker 2: And Shavontek dropped the first set against Maria Sakari, but
- 29:59Speaker 2: won it in 3-6-1 in the final set. And then
- 30:03Speaker 2: Iala is playing in Cincinnati. She's got the American Amanda Anisimova,
- 30:08Speaker 2: one of the best backhands on tour. But Iala will
- 30:11Speaker 2: have the Filipino support.
- 30:13Speaker 1: And she'll be fresher. Yeah. After her last match as well.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Yeah. So a lot of players are just contending with
- 30:20Speaker 2: Iala's crowd at this point.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Yeah, which kind of rules? It's kind of like the...
- 30:25Speaker 1: Was it Seattle in the NFL that had the very
- 30:28Speaker 1: loud stadium?
- 30:29Speaker 2: That's the Kansas City Chiefs. Arrowhead, the loudest stadium.
- 30:33Speaker 1: That's your team.
- 30:33Speaker 2: That's my team.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Well, anyway, look, it must be scary going to play
- 30:38Speaker 1: there and having to deal with that kind of atmosphere
- 30:42Speaker 1: and just knowing that everyone wants you to do badly.
- 30:45Speaker 1: I remember when we had Sam Stoser in here and
- 30:46Speaker 1: she talked about the US Open final and her just saying...
- 30:51Speaker 1: Just knowing everyone in the crowd wanted her to lose
- 30:54Speaker 1: is a crazy feeling.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Yeah, she's playing Serena.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what I mean. Like, it would be hard
- 31:00Speaker 1: to kind of imagine all those people looking at you
- 31:03Speaker 1: hoping you don't do well.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Well, Djokovic has had a career of having, you know,
- 31:08Speaker 2: crowds kind of chanting against him. And he said his
- 31:12Speaker 2: little trick is, Pretend that when they're going for the
- 31:15Speaker 2: other guy, that's actually them cheering for him.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not real. That's like when people are like, oh,
- 31:21Speaker 1: you're nervous speaking publicly. Imagine everyone's naked. It doesn't.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:25Speaker 1: What, your brain? How dumb do you think your brain
- 31:27Speaker 1: is that you'll trick it and it'll just go, oh,
- 31:30Speaker 1: everyone's naked.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Aren't they the idiots?
- 31:32Speaker 1: Not me doing my little presentation. What do you think, Djokovic?
- 31:36Speaker 1: The guy's a borderline genius. He can also speak like
- 31:39Speaker 1: eight languages or whatever. He's able to convince his silly
- 31:42Speaker 1: brain that everyone in the crowd is actually cheering for him.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Come on. He needs to admit he's a psychopath like
- 31:49Speaker 1: Michael Jordan and he thrives off the hatred is what happens.
- 31:53Speaker 2: That fires him up.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Absolutely. And that's fine. That's fine. You know who's not
- 31:57Speaker 1: doing well, Mike? Venus.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Venus. This is such a, I don't know. I know
- 32:01Speaker 2: we've talked about it before, but Venus Williams getting another
- 32:04Speaker 2: wild card and then getting bounced in the first round,
- 32:06Speaker 2: like barely what she won.
- 32:09Speaker 1: She won four games in total for the two sets.
- 32:11Speaker 1: She had 6-2, 6-2, she lost.
- 32:13Speaker 2: Yeah. So, I mean, a legend of the sport, you know,
- 32:17Speaker 2: she deserves it or she's taken wild cards from more
- 32:20Speaker 2: deserving people.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Well, I think that is the interesting point. You can
- 32:26Speaker 1: make the argument it's good for the tournament to have
- 32:29Speaker 1: her But the more she keeps losing, it's kind of not.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Does that make sense?
- 32:34Speaker 2: Well, the ticket sales are still there. People are packing
- 32:36Speaker 2: out stadiums to see, you know, Venus.
- 32:39Speaker 1: But I don't think that lasts. Once everyone's seen the
- 32:42Speaker 1: final victory lap, I think it's kind of like, oh,
- 32:46Speaker 1: now it's a bit sad. She's ranked, what is she ranked?
- 32:49Speaker 1: 600 something in the world now. So, I mean, yeah,
- 32:53Speaker 1: once you've seen it and you're like, oh, love you, Venus.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Thank you for the memories. Then do you want to
- 32:57Speaker 1: go see again to see her get? pumped. Unfortunately, time
- 33:01Speaker 1: moves on quick and there'll be cooler, funner games to
- 33:04Speaker 1: go and see. I think she just needs to chill,
- 33:06Speaker 1: come back and then get on the exhibitions. That's the
- 33:10Speaker 1: fun stuff. If she still wants to play, just play
- 33:12Speaker 1: the exhibitions.
- 33:13Speaker 2: This is all leading up to the US. She's going
- 33:15Speaker 2: to play in the US. Who was her doubles partner? Bublik, maybe?
- 33:19Speaker 2: I think it was her and Bublik playing doubles together,
- 33:22Speaker 2: so that'll be awesome.
- 33:23Speaker 1: That's kind of cool, yeah.
- 33:24Speaker 2: But it's like, play the US and then call it
- 33:27Speaker 2: a day?
- 33:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Or just play... I guess with Serena, if you want
- 33:33Speaker 1: to play doubles, that's another story. Yeah. That's kind of
- 33:36Speaker 1: box office. And there's nothing wrong with just being a
- 33:39Speaker 1: doubles player.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Venus and Serena are playing doubles as we speak.
- 33:43Speaker 1: They've returned in Cincinnati. Not going well in the first set.
- 33:47Speaker 2: No. It's about to be 5-2. Losing to Mardukoscik and
- 33:52Speaker 2: Peyton Stearns. So, I mean, that would be a fun match.
- 33:55Speaker 1: The box office game.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Yeah. It's pretty sick, but... I mean, maybe they're just
- 34:00Speaker 2: trying to find their form and then hopefully, you know,
- 34:02Speaker 2: they are playing doubles in the US. I'm not sure.
- 34:04Speaker 1: I feel like they would want... If they're playing in
- 34:07Speaker 1: Cincinnati now, surely they're going to play the US Open.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Yeah, you would think so. So, yeah, Venus, I mean.
- 34:14Speaker 1: But maybe that's where they both should be if they
- 34:16Speaker 1: want to keep playing. I don't think anyone is going to...
- 34:19Speaker 1: I think people will start to have an issue if
- 34:22Speaker 1: they are holding spots from up-and-coming players in singles. But
- 34:27Speaker 1: I think anyone... Everyone would be like, if you guys
- 34:29Speaker 1: want to play doubles, go for it. Yeah. And there's
- 34:32Speaker 1: nothing wrong with being a doubles player. They could host
- 34:34Speaker 1: Tipping Point one day. Like, it's fine. Just do it.
- 34:38Speaker 1: And I think that's a happy medium that everyone would
- 34:41Speaker 1: be okay with. I'm still learning lessons.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Well, Mike, it is the time for approaching the net,
- 34:49Speaker 1: or as I like to call it, Sam Slam.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Grand Sam.
- 34:54Speaker 1: No, I thought I'd change it this week to Sam Slam.
- 34:59Speaker 1: You like Grand Slam? Damn it. I thought I could
- 35:02Speaker 1: change it up.
- 35:02Speaker 2: All right. Well, what do you have for us in
- 35:04Speaker 2: the Sam Slam?
- 35:05Speaker 1: Oh, okay. Well, I've been scouring the internet. I've been
- 35:07Speaker 1: on all the tennis websites. I think you'll like this.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Taylor Fritz. You love Taylor Fritz. Well, he's a good
- 35:12Speaker 1: American guy. He smashed his racket early on. Often this
- 35:16Speaker 1: puts people on the fence, but I think you showed
- 35:18Speaker 1: what he's a good guy, what kind of a good
- 35:19Speaker 1: guy he is, because he then gave the racket to
- 35:21Speaker 1: a fan.
- 35:22Speaker 2: This is in the first game of his match against Mickelson.
- 35:25Speaker 1: Which kind of is awesome.
- 35:27Speaker 2: I mean, he gets broken. So that's on break point.
- 35:33Speaker 1: The racket, look at that. It's not in a good way.
- 35:35Speaker 2: That's an early racket smash. You love to see it.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Do you think there's something going on at home that
- 35:42Speaker 1: he walks out with that kind of attitude in the
- 35:44Speaker 1: first game?
- 35:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's just had to vent that frustration. And
- 35:47Speaker 2: then gives it, look at this. Mangles his racket, takes
- 35:50Speaker 2: it over to a kid in the stands. Perfect.
- 35:52Speaker 1: And that kid will cherish that.
- 35:53Speaker 2: I always think it's funny.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Absolutely cherish that racket.
- 35:56Speaker 2: It's pretty cool, I guess, but also it's like, here's
- 35:58Speaker 2: some garbage.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:01Speaker 1: For all we know, he's not giving it to the kid.
- 36:03Speaker 1: For all we know, he gave it to the kid
- 36:04Speaker 1: and then said, hey, can you put that in the
- 36:06Speaker 1: bin for me?
- 36:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Like he was asking the kid to do a favor
- 36:08Speaker 1: for him.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Throw it away.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Yeah, throw it away.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Like, do you think the kid's going to go home?
- 36:12Speaker 2: Hang it on the wall.
- 36:13Speaker 1: And just like, yeah, put it, and he'd like to
- 36:15Speaker 1: his parents, I got the best gift.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Taylor Fritz wrecked a racket.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Smashed rackets.
- 36:20Speaker 1: And they're like, oh, you should have asked for a selfie.
- 36:22Speaker 1: I got one better.
- 36:23Speaker 2: A signed tennis ball.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Also, the first game is so funny.
- 36:27Speaker 2: First game gets broken, smashes the racket. I love that turnaround.
- 36:31Speaker 2: I think there was a clay court match a couple
- 36:34Speaker 2: of years ago where the second part of the match.
- 36:36Speaker 2: the guy smashes racket, and I was like, that rules
- 36:39Speaker 2: as well. Two points in?
- 36:41Speaker 1: Two points in. I want to just do it the
- 36:43Speaker 1: first point.
- 36:44Speaker 2: It's a defeatist thing to do, but do it in
- 36:46Speaker 2: the warm-up. The warm-up.
- 36:49Speaker 1: The gentle hit back across. It would rule. The warm-up
- 36:53Speaker 1: is funny, but not enough people would see it. I
- 36:55Speaker 1: would love to... You start the match, you're serving first.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Double fault to smash the racket.
- 36:59Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Yeah. Staying in Cincinnati, I like this. Arthur Rinderknecht, he
- 37:05Speaker 1: lost his cool. Oh. He screamed at a fan who
- 37:09Speaker 1: yelled at him. Not exactly the Argentinian again.
- 37:13Speaker 2: He goes, Rinderknecht goes to the crowd. Oh, my God.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Gives it back. He was getting heckled. It's 4-4 in
- 37:24Speaker 2: the third set.
- 37:25Speaker 1: It's truly fantastic because this, it's not on center court.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:29Speaker 1: We're looking at maybe a hundred people total watching this game.
- 37:32Speaker 1: This is like. It's kind of like you're playing backyard
- 37:35Speaker 1: cricket here or something and you start screaming at your uncle.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Dude, I love it. That's fantastic. Obviously, he was getting
- 37:40Speaker 2: heckled and then he just went over and gave it
- 37:42Speaker 2: back after leveling things up in the third set.
- 37:45Speaker 1: I love seeing the veil of professional sportsmen disappear and
- 37:49Speaker 1: you just see a guy.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 37:51Speaker 1: There's a great one in the AFL. It's from the
- 37:54Speaker 1: 70s when a player jumps into the crowd, punches someone
- 37:58Speaker 1: in the crowd, and then punches the umpire.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Oh.
- 38:01Speaker 1: And then he got banned for life. Actually, when I was... Oh,
- 38:04Speaker 1: he just whacked the outlier. You just.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Oh, he's going to punch a fellow out of the
- 38:10Speaker 2: fence now. He's into someone in the stand.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Oh, he's giving one too. Yep. Yeah, he's done well.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Well, just quickly, there is... We talked about Taylor Fritz before.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Him and Rinderknecht have beef, right? They are very... When
- 38:24Speaker 2: they play each other, it's very tense. So much so
- 38:26Speaker 2: when Taylor Fritz beat him at Wimbledon, I want to say,
- 38:29Speaker 2: last year. He said, Fritz said to Rinder Knesh, have
- 38:34Speaker 2: a safe flight home. Yeah.
- 38:37Speaker 1: I mean, that's just polite, isn't it?
- 38:39Speaker 2: It is nice.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Good luck on that flight.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Anything else?
- 38:43Speaker 1: Yes, I do have one.
- 38:44Speaker 2: The Summer of Sam?
- 38:45Speaker 1: I do. In the Summer of Sam Slam. This is beautiful.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Alex Yala, who is just taking the world by storm.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Someone's drawn a beautiful picture of her.
- 38:55Speaker 2: That is a great picture.
- 38:57Speaker 1: Would you find that creepy if someone did that to you, Mike?
- 38:59Speaker 2: Not if it was that.
- 39:00Speaker 1: It's like a beautiful painting.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Watercolor.
- 39:03Speaker 1: On canvas as well. It's not scribbled in a Sharpie
- 39:06Speaker 1: on the back of a napkin.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Do you think someone just printed out an AI?
- 39:09Speaker 1: Potentially.
- 39:12Speaker 2: I think it's great. I think it's touching, and I
- 39:14Speaker 2: would be blessed to have someone do that for me. Really?
- 39:17Speaker 1: Wow. I mean, luck would have it. What do you
- 39:20Speaker 1: think of this?
- 39:22Speaker 2: What do you have? Oh, my God.
- 39:25Speaker 1: I did that by hand. I did it like a
- 39:28Speaker 1: lot of just with a pencil.
- 39:30Speaker 2: I love it. All right. That's another episode in the
- 39:33Speaker 2: can of Pod Laver Arena.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Episode 51.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Yes. We'll be back to wrap things up for Cincinnati
- 39:41Speaker 2: once I'm back from Perth and discuss what's happening in Winston-Salem.
- 39:44Speaker 1: Oh, spooky.
- 39:45Speaker 2: Spooky. The 250 event there. We'll talk to you guys
- 39:48Speaker 2: on the next one.
- 39:49Speaker 1: I'm a witch.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Bye. Bye. Master Khodar is allowed for some extra time
- 39:54Speaker 2: to change his shoes as the shoelace is broken once again.
