June 20 - The Refuge That Cannot Be Bought · Bible Chat Devotional

• 0:02
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
• 0:06
rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, June 20th.
• 0:11
Finding your safe place In a world that feels increasingly
• 0:16
uncertain, everyone is looking for somewhere safe.
• 0:20
Some people find it in friendships, some in
• 0:22
entertainment, some in money or status, and none of those things
• 0:26
are necessarily bad. But they all have one thing in
• 0:29
common. They can fail you at the worst
• 0:32
possible moment. Proverbs chapter 18, verse 10
• 0:36
  offers something completely different.
• 0:39
The name of the Lord is a strong tower.
• 0:41
The righteous man runs into it and is safe.
• 0:44
And then verse 11 gives the contrast.
• 0:46
The rich man's wealth is his strong city.
• 0:49
He thinks of it as a wall. One of these is a real
• 0:52
stronghold, one of them is an illusion.
• 0:56
Money and status feel like walls until the crisis comes.
• 1:00
But God's name, his character, his faithfulness, that is a
• 1:03
tower that actually holds. David in First Samuel chapter 22
• 1:08
was a fugitive. Enemies were after him, and yet
• 1:12
he didn't hide alone. People rallied to him and he
• 1:16
found community in the middle of the chaos.
• 1:18
God was building something even in the running, even in the
• 1:22
  hiding. David's safety wasn't a
• 1:25
comfortable house with a great security system.
• 1:28
It was the presence and protection of God.
• 1:31
Psalm 52 verse one calls out the arrogance of trusting in power
• 1:35
and wealth. Why do you boast of evil, O
• 1:38
mighty man? The steadfast love of God
• 1:41
endures all the day. That word steadfast is key.
• 1:45
God's love doesn't have off days.
• 1:47
It doesn't dry up when the situation gets complicated.
• 1:51
It endures all the day, every day, every moment, every season.
• 1:56
For you today, whether things are going well or completely
• 1:59
falling apart, this is the invitation.
• 2:02
Run to God first. Not as a last resort when
• 2:05
everything else fails. Not as a backup plan as your
• 2:09
first instinct. The strong tower is always open.
• 2:13
You don't have to earn your way in or clean yourself up before
• 2:16
  you enter. You just run.
• 2:19
And like David, as you do that, you'll often find that God also
• 2:24
surrounds you with people who become part of your safety
• 2:27
community. Mentors, loyal friends who show
• 2:30
up in the hard times. Safety in God and safety in
• 2:33
  community go together. Let's pray.
• 2:37
Heavenly Father, thank you for being our strong tower, a safe
• 2:41
place that never fails and never closes.
• 2:44
When we're tempted to find safety in things that ultimately
• 2:47
can't hold us, redirect us back to you.
• 2:50
Help us to run to you first, in fear, in stress, in uncertainty.
• 2:55
Surround us with godly community and teach us to trust in your
• 2:58
steadfast love above all else, in Jesus name, Amen.
• 3:05
What if the road ahead is not meant to be rushed, feared, or
• 3:08
walked alone? Going with God is a prayer
• 3:11
script series for believers who need more than encouragement for
• 3:15
the journey. They need prayer language for
• 3:17
walking with the Lord in real life, right where they are.
• 3:21
Through themes of pace, peace, paths, provision, and
• 3:24
protection, this series helps you surrender urgency, receive
• 3:28
steadiness, seek direction, depend on God's care, and pray
• 3:32
with confidence over the road before you.
• 3:34
Whether you feel stretched thin, uncertain, weary, or hungry for
• 3:39

• 3:56
with God in today's three-year Bible reading plan.
• 4:00
Proverbs, Chapter 18, Verses 10 to 11 World English Bible
• 4:05
Yahweh's name is a strong tower. The righteous run to him and are
• 4:09
safe. The rich man's wealth is his
• 4:12
strong city, like an unscalable wall in his own imagination.
• 4:17
First Samuel Chapter 22 World English Bible David therefore
• 4:22
departed from there and escaped to a Dullam's cave.
• 4:25
When his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they
• 4:28
went down there to him. Everyone who was in distress,
• 4:32
everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented
• 4:36
gathered themselves to him and he became captain over them.
• 4:40
They were with him about 400 men.
• 4:43
David went from there to mis pay of Moab and he said to the king
• 4:47
of Moab, please let my father and my mother come out with you
• 4:51
until I know what God will do for me.
• 4:54
He brought them before the king of Moab and they lived with him
• 4:57
all the time that David was in the stronghold.
• 5:01
The prophet Gad said to David, don't stay in the stronghold,
• 5:04
depart and go into the land of Judah.
• 5:07
Then David departed and came into the forest of Harith.
• 5:11
Saul heard that David was discovered with the men who were
• 5:14
with him. Now Saul was sitting in Jibah
• 5:18
under the tamarisk tree in Rama with his spear in his hand, and
• 5:22
all his servants were standing around him.
• 5:25
Saul said to his servants who stood around him.
• 5:27
Here now, you Benjamites, will the son of Jesse give everyone
• 5:31
of you fields and vineyards? Will he make you all captains of
• 5:35
thousands and captains of hundreds, that all of you have
• 5:38
conspired against me? And there is no one who
• 5:42
discloses to me when my son makes a treaty with the son of
• 5:45
Jesse. And there is none of you who is
• 5:47
sorry for me, or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my
• 5:51
servant against me to. Lie in wait, as it is today.
• 5:55
Then Doge the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul,
• 5:58
answered and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to
• 6:03
Ahimletch the son of Ahitub. He inquired of Yahweh for him,
• 6:07
gave him food, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.
• 6:11
Then the king sent to call Ahimletch the priest, the son of
• 6:15
Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests who were in
• 6:19
Nob, and they all came to the king.
• 6:22
Saul said, Here now you son of Ahatub, he answered, Here I am,
• 6:26
my Lord. Saul said to him, Why have you
• 6:29
conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you
• 6:31
have given him bread and a sword, and have inquired of God
• 6:35
for him, that he should rise against me to lie?
• 6:38
In wait, as it is today. Then Aheimlich answered the
• 6:42
king, and said, Who among all your servants is so faithful as
• 6:46
David? Who is the King's son-in-law,
• 6:49
captain of your bodyguard, and honored in your house?
• 6:52
Have I today begun to inquire of God for him, be it far from me.
• 6:57
Don't let the king impute anything to his servant, nor to
• 7:00
all the House of my father, for your servant knows nothing of
• 7:03
all this, less or more. The king said.
• 7:06
You shall surely die Aheim Lech you and all your father's house.
• 7:11
The king said to the guard who stood about him.
• 7:14
Turn and kill the priests of Yahweh, because their hand also
• 7:17
is with David and because they knew that he fled and didn't
• 7:21
disclose it to me. But the servants of the king
• 7:24
wouldn't put out their hand to fall on the priests of Yahweh.
• 7:28
The king said to Doge. Turn and attack the priests.
• 7:32
Doge the Edomite turned and he attacked the priests, and he
• 7:35
killed on that day 85 people who wore a linen ephod.
• 7:39
He struck Nob, the city of the priests, with the edge of the
• 7:42
sword, both men and women, children and nursing babies and
• 7:46
cattle and donkeys and sheep with the edge of the sword.
• 7:50
One of the sons of Ahemletch, the son of Ahitub named
• 7:53
Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.
• 7:57
Abiathar told David that Saul had slain Yahweh's priests.
• 8:01
David said to Abiathar, I knew on that day when Doge the
• 8:05
Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul, I am
• 8:08
responsible for the death of all the persons of your father's
• 8:11
  house. Stay with me.
• 8:14
Don't be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life,
• 8:17
for you will be safe with me. Psalm Chapter 52 World English
• 8:21
Bible Why do you boast of mischief, mighty man?
• 8:25
  God's loving kindness endures continually.
• 8:28
Your tongue plots destruction like a sharp razor working
• 8:31
deceitfully. You love evil more than good,
• 8:34
lying rather than speaking the truth.
• 8:37
You love all devouring words, you deceitful tongue.
• 8:41
God will likewise destroy you forever.
• 8:43
He will take you up and pluck you out of your tent and root
• 8:46
you out of the land of the living.
• 8:49
The righteous also will see it and fear and laugh at him,
• 8:52
saying, Behold, this is the man who didn't make God his
• 8:56
strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and
• 9:00
  strengthened himself in his wickedness.
• 9:02
But As for me, I am like a green olive tree in God's house.
• 9:07
I trust in God's loving kindness forever and ever.
• 9:10
I will give you thanks forever because you have done it.
• 9:13
I will hope in your name, for it is good in the presence of your
