- 0:00it why did you and dan decide to start this this
- 0:02game store when you've got a great career you've
- 0:05got a great education you've got a family right
- 0:08why suddenly decide to start this game store
- 0:10i was coming out of my shell but i started finding
- 0:13myself doing something i had never really done
- 0:15in my adult life which was making friends outside
- 0:18of work beneath there's a lot of people who come
- 0:20to these stores looking for something right uh
- 0:23they're looking for that connection and they're
- 0:24looking for a place to play and that's how we
- 0:27kind of came up with this idea of just the the
- 0:28third space a community yes we sell cards we
- 0:32sell games and things like that but our focus
- 0:34is having a community a place that people can
- 0:37come and just play games and they they took us
- 0:41all to disney world and something might might
- 0:44not kind of fell in love with it and just started
- 0:46taking us pretty much every year after that when
- 0:48when you're moving around a lot and your life
- 0:50is changing a lot from like culture to culture,
- 0:53language to language, right? Being able to basically
- 0:57go home to Disney World. It was the constant
- 1:01in my life. I felt comfortable there. I felt
- 1:04like things wouldn't change, you know? Like my
- 1:08life was just so much change and stuff that Disney
- 1:11World kind of provided that home feel. This is
- 1:14a big one. I know, especially like in the business
- 1:16space, like people use this word a lot, but I
- 1:18would say be curious, right? Get curious before
- 1:21you get convincing, right? Before you're trying
- 1:24to push someone, your views to somebody, I get
- 1:26curious into why their views are their views.
- 1:28Welcome to Yes And Land, where we say yes to
- 1:32the reality of yesterday and today. And we say
- 1:35and to the possibility, growth, and imagination
- 1:39of tomorrow. Welcome back, everybody, for our
- 1:48next episode of Yes And Land. In Disney's Robin
- 1:52Hood, Prince John... taxes Nottingham into silence.
- 1:56Friar Tuck rings the church bell and nobody comes.
- 1:59It takes a fox, a bear, and a whole town of unlikely
- 2:02allies to bring everyone back together. Today's
- 2:05guest has been finding common ground his whole
- 2:08life. Andre was born in Bolivia, grew up moving
- 2:11from country to country with one constant every
- 2:14December. Today, he's a senior software architect
- 2:18and co -owner of Harsh Side Games, a place where
- 2:21everyone has a seat at the table. Welcome to
- 2:24the program, Andre. Thank you, Ryan. Super excited
- 2:26to have you here, my brother. Yeah, I'm excited
- 2:28to be here. So we're going to do some fun talking
- 2:31about Robin Hood, which is a classic 1973 classic
- 2:34who people from our generation watched on VHS
- 2:37over and over. Watch it, rewind, watch it, rewind.
- 2:41Good times. So we're going to have some fun talking
- 2:43about that. As we get started, what I want to
- 2:47do is go back to that young lad that you were,
- 2:50and let's talk about what your journey was. being
- 2:53in Bolivia, then kind of moving around and what
- 2:57that was kind of like as you were growing up.
- 2:59Okay. Yeah, it was, it was different. So how
- 3:07long did you live in Bolivia? So in Bolivia,
- 3:10I was only there 18 months. Oh my goodness. I
- 3:12don't actually remember much of Bolivia itself,
- 3:14other than pictures and stories that like my
- 3:16parents told me and things like that. Okay. Right.
- 3:18And then where'd you go from Bolivia? We moved
- 3:20over to Peru, Lima, Peru. And this is where I
- 3:23first kind of started remembering, have some
- 3:25like vague memories because we were there for
- 3:26four years. I was about five years old when we
- 3:29moved out of Lima, but we still had a lot of
- 3:32family and stuff in Peru. So we go back and visit
- 3:35and stuff like that. And so you, when you were
- 3:38Bolivia, then Peru, what was the language that
- 3:41was spoken in your home? Was it Spanish? Yeah.
- 3:43So you grew up speaking Spanish. Okay. And then
- 3:47from Peru, where did you go? And then we moved
- 3:50to Ecuador. So Quito, Ecuador. Okay. There for
- 3:53four years. And that's where, like, my memories
- 3:55really kind of started. Yeah. Yeah. Because you
- 3:59were five. Five, yeah. Yeah, those are some formative
- 4:02years. Yes. For sure. And then after four years
- 4:06in Ecuador, moved to Mexico City. Mexico City.
- 4:10Estructo Federal. Yeah. Actually, in El Efe,
- 4:12yeah. El Efe, okay. Now they've changed it. At
- 4:15the time, this was the 90s, right? So El Efe
- 4:16was much bigger. It was different. Now it's like
- 4:18the, anyway. They've changed things over the
- 4:20years, I've learned. But yeah, lived in Mexico
- 4:23City for a good five years. So those were also
- 4:26some formative years. Yeah. That was like eight
- 4:29or nine until like 13, 14, 15. Exactly. Then
- 4:33moved to Germany, Frankfurt, Germany. Which had
- 4:37to be very different. I mean, you're used to
- 4:38moving at this point in time, but still. Yeah.
- 4:40Yeah. But it's different. Different languages.
- 4:42Yeah. Different continents. Always been Spanish
- 4:44for me. Yeah. Growing up, even though culturally
- 4:46they're very different. Bolivia versus Ecuador,
- 4:49Mexico. It's all very different stuff. And now
- 4:50we're going to another part of the world. Yeah.
- 4:53And different languages, stuff like that. It
- 4:55wasn't completely foreign to us because my mom.
- 4:57would speak German to me as like a little kid.
- 5:00And then when I started speaking, I only started
- 5:01speaking Spanish. So then she kind of gave up
- 5:04on the whole German thing. Yeah. But like my
- 5:05grandparents are Swiss and, you know, we have,
- 5:08my parents are both Swiss. So like I knew about
- 5:10Germany and German and stuff like that. So it
- 5:12wasn't too crazy. Yeah. And that's where I was
- 5:15supposed to finish off high school. But then
- 5:17a year and a half later, my dad, you know, gets
- 5:20a job in Moscow, Russia. No way. Yeah. So like
- 5:26halfway through my like freshman to sophomore
- 5:31year, we moved to Russia. And then you lived
- 5:35in Russia for how long? And then there I was
- 5:37supposed to finish off high school there. Anyway,
- 5:39fun story. A year and a half later, we moved
- 5:40to Tucson, Arizona. Oh my goodness. And that's
- 5:42where I actually finished high school. Okay.
- 5:44I was in Arizona. My goodness, man. You had some
- 5:47serious moving around. Yeah. Okay. So your parents
- 5:50are Swiss. Yes. And what I didn't say is, is
- 5:53what your last name is, but it's Kredolfer. Yes.
- 5:55Kredolfer. Yep. And, and that is, tell everybody
- 5:58what that, what that is, what that means. So
- 6:00it's a Swiss name. There is a small town in Potsdam
- 6:02called Kredolfer. And we are those then. Kredolfer.
- 6:07Which is so cool. I actually think that's rad.
- 6:09I guess that's really fun. Yeah. So you, well,
- 6:13you're moving to all these countries, you're
- 6:14speaking Spanish, then you got to go learn some
- 6:16German. Did you get pretty fluent in German?
- 6:18I did not. Okay. I went to American schools,
- 6:21international schools. Okay. But they're basically
- 6:24funded by like the American embassy. Okay. So
- 6:27when you were in these other countries before
- 6:28speaking Spanish, were you learning English too?
- 6:31I was. Okay. So you were at least getting some
- 6:33exposure to English, though it wasn't what you
- 6:35were speaking. And it was only through school
- 6:36though. Okay. So still like maybe not as much
- 6:39English that you were speaking. So then suddenly
- 6:41you moved to Tucson. Was that a pretty big adjustment
- 6:43for language? It was. Yes. That was actually
- 6:46the move I feared the most. Man. was moving to
- 6:49the United States. Even though in reality, like
- 6:51Tucson's not exactly a scary place, but like
- 6:53totally different. And then you're gonna have
- 6:56to start speaking English there because Americans
- 6:58aren't overly accommodating when somebody else
- 7:00speaks a different language. No, but by that
- 7:02time I was speaking pretty fluently because I'd
- 7:03already been, you know, 14 years in the American
- 7:06school system, I guess. I don't want to say American,
- 7:08like international school system. Right. So I
- 7:12was pretty fluent already. And, but also really
- 7:15hard too, I would imagine because you're doing
- 7:17in the middle of your high school years. yeah
- 7:18which in reality is really tough you know we
- 7:21um we learn a lot about impact of moving schools
- 7:26and stuff doing divorces because that will sometimes
- 7:28shape and affect you know what courts want to
- 7:30do with custody or who they're going to have
- 7:32move out or stay in a marital home or if somebody
- 7:35does move and like high school having to move
- 7:39in the middle of high school is like the hardest
- 7:41move for kids kind of across the board junior
- 7:43high is really tough you did both elementary
- 7:46school way easier right yeah obviously before
- 7:49then even easier high school though can can really
- 7:52have a really big impact and be really hard so
- 7:55was that pretty tough then i didn't know any
- 7:57different i don't know kind of like you just
- 7:58moved it was just the thing we did yeah right
- 8:01so what what was it like trying to build friends
- 8:04and stuff when you moved to this honestly a new
- 8:07country you never lived in before yeah yeah so
- 8:09it wasn't too difficult only because attending
- 8:13international schools a lot of the people there
- 8:15are also experiencing the same thing you are
- 8:18right they're all expat families and stuff that
- 8:20are also moving around a lot right so a lot of
- 8:23people in the school and they're not very big
- 8:24schools like my graduating class in in russia
- 8:27would have been like 27 people right like they're
- 8:30not huge schools that we were going to uh late
- 8:3390s early early 2000s and uh there a lot of you
- 8:37are just in the same spot yeah so So it wasn't
- 8:41too bad? No, it wasn't too crazy. With those,
- 8:44I'm assuming the moves were as a result of work,
- 8:47work -related changes? Yeah. It was your dad
- 8:50or your mom? It was my dad. So your dad. And
- 8:52what was his profession? He worked as a director
- 8:55of temporal affairs for the Church of Jesus Christ,
- 8:56Latter -day Saints. So it was just like wherever
- 8:59they needed him to go? That's right. They would
- 9:00just move him. They would just move him. Did
- 9:02he know that that's what the job meant? It was
- 9:06like you just move wherever they tell you to
- 9:08go? Yeah. And your mom was like, let's do it.
- 9:11Yeah. She was always very supportive. Because
- 9:13they have to be pretty aligned. Like you've got
- 9:15to have, you've got to have the family be pretty
- 9:17aligned. Did you find that that helped your family
- 9:20be closer together because going through moves
- 9:22you guys would have to like? Yeah. Oh, absolutely.
- 9:24Right. Because that was like our main common
- 9:26denominator was us. Yeah. Family, siblings, parents
- 9:29and stuff. Right. So we moved to a whole new
- 9:31place and it was just us. So it did kind of help
- 9:34us create a pretty strong bond between all of
- 9:36us. Yeah. We're all still very friendly and communicate
- 9:39almost daily. Yeah. at this point. Where do your
- 9:41parents live now? Here, in North Salt Lake. So
- 9:45they live here? Yeah. So you're here, they're
- 9:47here, where are your siblings at? They're all
- 9:48over the place. Okay. How many siblings do you
- 9:51have? I have three older sisters. Three older
- 9:53sisters. Okay. Okay. So you were the lone boy
- 9:57in the house. I was, yeah, yeah. And there's
- 9:59quite a gap between them and me. I came five
- 10:02years after the youngest. Okay. So they babysat
- 10:05you a lot? They did. Yeah. I basically had four
- 10:08moms. Did they ever get paid for it? oh i don't
- 10:11know i don't think so probably not because like
- 10:13we're in that zone too like we've got uh our
- 10:17youngest is six the oldest is 17. um trying to
- 10:20decide like okay is it just the job of the siblings
- 10:23to watch if we're going to go out or do we actually
- 10:26have to like give them a little bit and we're
- 10:28still we haven't yet so we're still kind of that's
- 10:30not like well i don't know like yeah maybe my
- 10:3217 year old doesn't really want to my 13 year
- 10:34old definitely would he just is the kind and
- 10:37he's got younger sisters um but so far he's just
- 10:40done it when we've asked and just that's cool
- 10:42that's good about it i feel like that's just
- 10:43kind of built in yeah if you're the oldest you
- 10:45gotta watch them yeah just you have to right
- 10:46you just gotta learn that responsibility yeah
- 10:48exactly um and you know sometimes you know as
- 10:51parents we kind of worry about like okay well
- 10:53what's gonna happen if or are they gonna you
- 10:55know be mean to their siblings if they're the
- 10:58ones watching at the same time like man when
- 11:00we were growing up That happened. That's right.
- 11:03That's what happens. Like you get picked on,
- 11:06right? Like it just is what it is. You know,
- 11:08I remember my, I remember a friend in high school,
- 11:12like her older, two older brothers, the one that
- 11:16was much older, he would just pick on her and
- 11:19her siblings relentlessly when he was the one
- 11:21watching. Like he would tie them up to like the
- 11:24tree house, like they were prisoners and stuff.
- 11:26Like legit, they didn't want to and wanted to
- 11:28get away and he would do that. And I'm like,
- 11:30yeah, I think our kids have it just fine. Right.
- 11:32Yeah. When you hear those stories. Yeah. My kids
- 11:36call me in the phone like, oh, they play with
- 11:40this game. Like, oh, that's so hard. Like, all
- 11:43right. At least you're not getting tied up to
- 11:44a tree house. Right. You're going to be there
- 11:47for the rest of the night. Right. They're going
- 11:48to let you go. So it's going to be fine. Yeah.
- 11:50For me, I'm thinking about it like the times
- 11:52where my sisters had to watch me. I was the I
- 11:54was the troublemaker. They were like annoyed
- 11:57by me because I was just the annoying little
- 11:58brother. totally fair yeah so fast forward and
- 12:02you end up going to college what did you decide
- 12:06to study in college uh computer science okay
- 12:10so you decide computer science did you love computers
- 12:12i did yeah okay yeah pretty early on my dad was
- 12:15really into like tech gadgets and stuff like
- 12:17that so we had a computer pretty early on at
- 12:20home and stuff and i'd love just kind of poking
- 12:22around and doing stuff and editing stuff and
- 12:25i i got a programming book pretty early on like
- 12:28in middle school I would just read. I had, like,
- 12:30no idea what I was reading, but I was still reading
- 12:31it because I was like, this is so great. Programming
- 12:33book. You can talk to computers, yeah. Holy moly.
- 12:36Yeah, I just got into it. You're out there reading
- 12:39programming books, and I'm there watching movies,
- 12:42right? Like, okay, you're smart. Like, this is
- 12:44good stuff. So do you do computer science degree?
- 12:51Yeah, that's where I started. I switched to information
- 12:53technology. Okay. Pretty early on. Okay. And
- 12:57then. Same. Post -degree, you go get a job somewhere,
- 13:00I assume, right? Where did you end up going?
- 13:02So right after I graduated, I was here on a student
- 13:06visa. Okay. And I got married to my wife. And
- 13:10I'm really lazy. And I didn't work on my green
- 13:14card or my residency paperwork. Yeah. Because
- 13:18I was on a student visa. I'm fine. I graduate.
- 13:20I have an internship working for the LDS Church.
- 13:24I'm an engineer. Then it comes up that my visa
- 13:27is expiring and I don't have a way to stay here
- 13:31in the country. So I quickly apply to the University
- 13:35of Utah to continue to be a student. Oh, for
- 13:38a graduate degree. Because I was graduating and
- 13:40so the student visa would expire. So I go and
- 13:43apply for a master's program at the University
- 13:46of Utah so I can stay in the country, of course.
- 13:48And while I'm doing that, I'm... obviously applying
- 13:51to get a green card and doing all that stuff.
- 13:53Yeah. What's your home country? Switzerland.
- 13:56So you would have had to go back to Switzerland.
- 13:58Probably. Holy Toledo. Yeah, yeah. And you, have
- 14:03you ever lived there? No, I mean, we visited
- 14:05it. Isn't that wild? Yeah. So you get to go visit
- 14:12a ton? No, not anymore. Not anymore. You did
- 14:14when you were younger. Yeah, yeah, yeah. My parents,
- 14:17a long time. But you haven't been back in a little
- 14:19while? I took my wife last year. Hey. Hey, y
- 14:22'all. After getting married for 18 years, I finally
- 14:25took her to Switzerland. For reals. Did she love
- 14:29it? She did. It was amazing. What was her favorite
- 14:31part? I think the mountains. I know we have great
- 14:34mountains here, but the ones in Switzerland,
- 14:36that's next level. I mean, yeah. I mean, Utah's
- 14:39got great mountains, right? And in the United
- 14:41States, it's fantastic. But, like, the Swiss
- 14:43Alps? Yeah, the Alps. Like, something else. I
- 14:45mean, it's kind of iconic, right? Now, is...
- 14:49Is the Matterhorn, is that in Switzerland? That's
- 14:51in Switzerland, yes. Yeah, right? Like that is.
- 14:53That's iconic now in Disneyland. Yep. Because
- 14:57it is such a cool mountain. Yep. It's in Switzerland.
- 15:01See, there you go. Yeah. I love going to Matterhorn
- 15:03or in Disneyland and seeing all the Swiss flags
- 15:05and all the Canton flags and all this stuff.
- 15:07I'm sure. It's cool. Yeah, it's like that. It's
- 15:09my... Yeah, yeah, yeah. My paisanos. Yeah, exactly.
- 15:15So when did a love for... games come up for you?
- 15:22Was that something where it was when you were
- 15:24younger, teenage years, in your 20s? As far as
- 15:28I can remember, again, my dad being very into
- 15:30gadgets and technology and stuff, we had the
- 15:33first Nintendo pretty early on. I was just a
- 15:35couple years old when we got the very first NES.
- 15:37The original Nintendo. What was your game? What
- 15:40was your go -to game? Mario and Duck Hunt. Duck
- 15:44Hunt, yeah. Yeah, the gun and everything. Oh,
- 15:48yeah. That's a classic. That's right. Did you
- 15:50ever play, like, Paperboy? Yes. Marble Madness?
- 15:53I didn't have Marble. I'm aware of that one,
- 15:56but I didn't. Bubble Bobble? Bubble Bobble. I
- 15:58got some cool artwork of Bubble Bobble in my
- 16:00office. Yeah, that game goes back. My sisters
- 16:02and I would play that. We would play Bubble Bobble
- 16:05so much. Yeah. I love that. I love those little
- 16:08dragons. Anyway, but yeah, it started with video
- 16:11games, mostly. okay so and then did you ever
- 16:14play like board games when did you start evolving
- 16:16into like more of the card games and other other
- 16:19yeah i i kind of dabbled with it a little bit
- 16:22in in middle school okay um i bought some magic
- 16:24cards and i didn't really have anybody to play
- 16:26with though yeah um and then warhammer okay got
- 16:30the little figurines painted them kind of tried
- 16:31to figure out the rules but you know like textbook
- 16:33worth of stuff to figure out the rules and i
- 16:34didn't have anyone to play with again i like
- 16:36i just didn't have anybody this is me i'm just
- 16:38buying these toys which is always very fascinating
- 16:40buying Although I spend most of my time just
- 16:42playing video games. Sure. Even though the board
- 16:45game, the Warhammer, the cards were always very
- 16:47fascinating to me. Sure. I didn't really have
- 16:49the community or the way to kind of get into
- 16:51it. Yeah. As you, in your teenage years, what
- 16:53was your go -to video game? What did you play
- 16:55a lot? It was always whatever the latest Nintendo
- 16:58was. It was Mario, right? Mario 64 or Zelda.
- 17:03You loved some Zelda, huh? Mario and Zelda was
- 17:06my jam. See, I never, I never loved Zelda. Really?
- 17:11I know I'm too linear. I was like the open world
- 17:14exploration. Yes, I can't do it. Like I need
- 17:16to have, I start here and I go there. It's why
- 17:18a good, good friend of mine loves D &D. And he's
- 17:22convinced that I'll love it because I do love
- 17:25imagination and creativity. I love being a nerd.
- 17:29I do. But like in it, when I've tried, it's not.
- 17:33And there's no like, okay, I did this and I win
- 17:35now. Yeah, correct. And so it's never like captured
- 17:39my heart. but I also can appreciate why it can
- 17:43be really fun and creativity with it. So, okay.
- 17:47So we're going to get to more of that, but let's
- 17:49loop in Robin Hood. Yes. Okay. So take us, take
- 17:54us to the beginning. Now it's 1973, right? That's
- 17:56when Robin Hood came out. So, you know, no spoilers
- 17:58here, right? If you haven't seen it yet, that's
- 18:00just too bad, right? Okay. It's been a long time.
- 18:02But if anybody hasn't seen it, take us kind of
- 18:05the overarching story of Disney's version of
- 18:07Robin Hood. So give us the overarching story.
- 18:10What's kind of going on? Well, let's see. You
- 18:15have – it takes place in Nottingham, right? And
- 18:19then if I remember correctly, I just recently
- 18:22watched it except for the last little bit, but
- 18:24you have Prince John who's taking over for who
- 18:28the rightful king was. Yeah, because King Richard's
- 18:31out doing – Fighting wars. He's doing the – Crusades.
- 18:36He's in the Crusades, right? So he's not there.
- 18:38Everybody loves him. That's right. And it's his
- 18:41brother who not everybody loves. Who takes over
- 18:43and he's not great. He is not. People love him.
- 18:46He's not. Right. Likes to suck his thumb. Yes.
- 18:48Definitely. And he's known for taking a lot of
- 18:55money from all of the residents of Nottingham.
- 18:57You got the tax collector, right? Yeah. You got
- 19:01the sheriff of Nottingham who's a tax collector.
- 19:03That's right. and nobody was really happy with
- 19:05the way he was running things. And there was
- 19:08a lot of poverty in Nottingham, and Robin Hood
- 19:10steps up and sees this and tries to figure out
- 19:13clever different ways of taking money from Prince
- 19:16John and giving it back to the people in Nottingham,
- 19:19who he believed was rightfully there. He and
- 19:22his buddy Little John, right? Little John. Who,
- 19:24of course, is not so little. Yeah, correct. In
- 19:28Disney's version, a giant bear. He's humongous,
- 19:30right? And Robin Hood's a fox. I believe, right?
- 19:33So that's kind of the basis for the story we
- 19:37have where Robin Hood's kind of being outlawed,
- 19:40so to speak, right? And doesn't really see himself
- 19:43as a good guy or a hero at all at the beginning
- 19:45of the movie. He's like, this is the right thing
- 19:48to do. I'm just doing it. That's right. And he's
- 19:50having fun doing it. He's having a ton of fun.
- 19:52Because he's going to dress up in disguises,
- 19:54right? And he's just going to, you know, trick
- 19:57Prince John and Prince John's sidekick, which
- 20:00is the snake. I don't remember the snake's name.
- 20:01Sir Hiss. Well, I guess that would make sense.
- 20:04Sir Hiss. Of course, that's what it is. Of course,
- 20:07that's what it is. And Sir Hiss just, I actually
- 20:10feel bad for Sir Hiss. Oh, definitely. Like he's
- 20:13there. He's trying to like be a good sidekick
- 20:16to Prince John. Prince John's smacking him on
- 20:19the head and sitting on him and throwing him
- 20:22out. I kind of feel bad for Sirius. Yeah, yeah,
- 20:26yeah. He tries to help them and it doesn't quite
- 20:30work out. So then Robin Hood has grown up with
- 20:34and been around, but not really had the ability
- 20:39or at least he doesn't think the ability to connect
- 20:41fully with Maid Mary, right? That's right. So
- 20:44like he's... They're from two different worlds.
- 20:46Yes, they are. She's inside the castle grounds,
- 20:49right? And he's, of course, an outlaw. So have
- 20:52classic, you know, classic story of people from
- 20:54different worlds. And so, you know, one of the
- 20:57things that we're talking about today is this
- 20:58idea of bringing people together and also kind
- 21:02of peacemakers. So set the stage for us on like
- 21:05what you're kind of seeing is the arc of this
- 21:07story with Robin Hood and what you're seeing
- 21:10him play the role in as a story. Was he able
- 21:15to bring people together and who is he bringing
- 21:17together? So I think. It becomes very obvious
- 21:22there when they're all in prison. And we were
- 21:26just talking about that right now. During the,
- 21:30or right after the archery competition that Prince
- 21:34John puts on, Robin Hood is found and he's an
- 21:39outlaw. And they find out that all the people
- 21:42not a hand were helping him. So he puts them
- 21:43all in jail. I think they do a good job kind
- 21:47of showing off just Robin Hood bringing everybody
- 21:49together. yeah right helping him and his causes
- 21:53even though they didn't really have the means
- 21:55or anything like that to to do it yeah and i
- 21:58love seeing that part of the story everybody
- 22:00kind of coming together and yeah going to jail
- 22:02for him i guess yeah yeah and and and he's and
- 22:06i think when we look at why they do that you
- 22:10know he's he's beloved like the people the common
- 22:12people love him yes and in part again he's he's
- 22:18an outlaw because i mean he's he's stealing from
- 22:20the prince so he is stealing yeah yeah at the
- 22:22same time like in reality what's happening is
- 22:24the people are being taken advantage of and he
- 22:27sees that need and then he's willing to put himself
- 22:30at risk to help them and i think that's part
- 22:33of what it is right he's endeared the people
- 22:35to him because of what he was willing to do for
- 22:36them to try to right a wrong that was happening
- 22:39that's right uh because prince john was over
- 22:42taxing the people yes you know And he also kind
- 22:46of provided a form of hope for the people when
- 22:49they would see him. Totally. It was because,
- 22:52yeah, they're still in these tough situations,
- 22:54right? And yet they have hope that like, hey,
- 22:56there is somebody that cares about us. There
- 22:57is, you know, a pathway out, right? There is
- 23:00good in the world. It's not just evil Prince
- 23:01John all the time. That's right. Yeah. So, and
- 23:05one of the things too, we've made reference to
- 23:07this, but one of the quotes that I like is when
- 23:10Robin Hood and Friar Tucker talking. He's talking
- 23:15about Maid Marian, right? And that he would love
- 23:17to, but he doesn't think it's possible. And Robin
- 23:19Hood says, I'm an outlaw. That's what there's
- 23:21no life for. That's no life for a lovely lady.
- 23:24Always on the run. What kind of future is that?
- 23:26And Friar Tuck says, oh, for heaven's sake, son,
- 23:29you're no outlaw. Why someday you'll be called
- 23:32a great hero. Yeah. And so, you know, sometimes
- 23:35it takes. He's himself. outlaw yeah I'm doing
- 23:43this thing because I believe in it but doesn't
- 23:44really understand maybe at that time the actual
- 23:47impact of what he's having yeah yeah and why
- 23:49the people would love him for what he's doing
- 23:51yeah and Friar Tuck's like no no no like people
- 23:54do love you and this you are actually being a
- 23:56hero to these people yeah correct and I feel
- 23:58like it's so great that Friar Tuck kind of took
- 24:00on that responsibility to kind of help him see
- 24:01that is from his perspective from Robin Hood's
- 24:04perspective he's just being chased by all the
- 24:06guards constantly right and having arrows shot
- 24:08at him all the time and stuff right so It's cool
- 24:11to sometimes have someone in your life kind of
- 24:13tell you, hey, let me tell you what you're actually
- 24:15doing. Yeah, for sure. So here's a quote I wrote
- 24:19down from Brene Brown in her book, Braving the
- 24:22Wilderness, and I want to get your take on it.
- 24:23So I'm going to read it and just see what you
- 24:24think, okay? All right. True belonging is not
- 24:27passive. It's not the belonging that comes with
- 24:31just joining a group. It's not fitting in or
- 24:33pretending or selling out because it's safe.
- 24:36In other words, I'll go back to the very beginning.
- 24:37True belonging is not passive. So how does that
- 24:40fit in with this idea of belonging and what Robin
- 24:45Hood is doing and what we can do to try to belong?
- 24:48Yeah, no. I mean, he definitely didn't, you know,
- 24:52sit back on the sidelines and just watch things
- 24:54happen. He stepped up, right? And he was very
- 24:57involved in trying to kind of help the people
- 25:02and stuff like that, even though he wasn't like
- 25:04necessarily the one that was affected by it.
- 25:07Sure. right but he saw it happen he was he was
- 25:09very involved and um he got other people too
- 25:14to kind of not be passive either right and that's
- 25:19part of you know being active is just bringing
- 25:21those people together too yeah yeah and um like
- 25:27you said then what starts to happen is when somebody
- 25:29does that and he's putting himself out there
- 25:32he's sticking his neck out And quite literally,
- 25:36right, after the archery event, right? Because
- 25:41when they discover him, they're going to chop
- 25:44his head off. Yeah, correct. Which I always thought
- 25:46was funny. He has the sword. Prince John has
- 25:48the sword. He's in disguise. He uses the sword
- 25:51to cut the disguise off when at the end of the
- 25:54day, the goal was just to, you know, cut his
- 25:56head off. Yeah. He had the opportunity. He could
- 25:58have done it right there. Yeah. He could have
- 25:59had somebody else do his dirty work for him,
- 26:00though, right? He can't do that. PJ PJ wasn't
- 26:04about to do that right I always thought that
- 26:07was really funny about that scene so so with
- 26:11that so Robin Hood's doing this and the people
- 26:13are seeing what he's doing you know right to
- 26:15win the hand of Maid Marian but also obviously
- 26:18to help them and to support them because they're
- 26:20being taken advantage of and it starts to inspire
- 26:23other people to also take action because then
- 26:27starts to happen is and we kind of made reference
- 26:29to it but with friar tuck right like friar chuck
- 26:32i think is a good example of he's seeing what
- 26:34robin hood's doing and he's he's he's a man of
- 26:37god right so uh he's already gonna be you know
- 26:39generally speaking pretty pretty good natured
- 26:41but he gets kind of inspired because he sees
- 26:43the hope and and he's there in the church um
- 26:47and um prince john had just tripled the taxes
- 26:52yeah right like okay we're you know if they're
- 26:55not paying enough as it is now they're gonna
- 26:56go triple him because he's trying to like pull
- 26:58robin hood out like he's trying to get to robin
- 27:00hood um and so it's raining um it's soaked and
- 27:08no one's in the church the pews are empty because
- 27:10a lot of people have been arrested yep and um
- 27:12sexton is there he's a little mouse a little
- 27:15sidekick mouse uh and he says uh friar chuck
- 27:19i don't think anyone is coming and friar chuck
- 27:21says you're right sexton But maybe the sound
- 27:24of this church bell will bring those poor people
- 27:26some comfort. We must do what we can to keep
- 27:28their hopes alive. Yeah, that's great. Right,
- 27:31which I think is just really sweet. What's your
- 27:32take on that for Friar Tuck and what he was motivated
- 27:35to do and what the impact was of that? Well,
- 27:37yeah, because he saw his role in the community
- 27:41and how he could help. And he didn't shy away
- 27:45from that. I thought that was pretty great. Also,
- 27:49with Friar Tuck, earlier on in the movie, And
- 27:52he goes and helps the blacksmith, I think it
- 27:55is, right? He's like, hey, you know, we found
- 27:58this at the church. We know you need some. Yes.
- 28:00Here's some, right? So he's just trying to find
- 28:02a little way he can make a difference. Bringing
- 28:06the bell or just bringing a little bit of money,
- 28:08right? And I think it's really, it's emblematic
- 28:12of the ways that we can find little ways to help
- 28:15other people and bring a little bit of hope because
- 28:16sometimes it's tough, right? Sometimes. They
- 28:20don't have to be great gestures. That's right.
- 28:22We don't have to, I guess, comparing or contrasting,
- 28:26I suppose, with Robin Hood. We don't have to
- 28:28take every bag of gold from Prince John that
- 28:31he has in his room. It doesn't have to be that
- 28:33big, grand gesture. And all of those actions
- 28:41can help people to have a little bit greater
- 28:44sense of belonging, which is kind of what we're
- 28:46talking about, right? Just letting them know
- 28:48that you're there. Yeah. Even though Friar Tuck
- 28:49wasn't necessarily doing anything but ringing
- 28:51the bells, just letting everybody know. I'm here.
- 28:55And, and, you know, what, what it leads me to
- 28:57is, um, a quote that I actually have come back
- 28:59to quite frequently from Dr. Vivek Murthy, um,
- 29:03who was the U S surgeon general. I just, I just,
- 29:06I love this study that was done. It was a study
- 29:08on, um, the epidemic of loneliness and isolation.
- 29:11Um, and one of the things he said in there, one
- 29:13of the findings they had, they said our epidemic
- 29:16of loneliness and isolation. has been an underappreciated
- 29:20public health crisis that has harmed individual
- 29:22and societal health. Our relationships are a
- 29:26source of healing and well -being hiding in plain
- 29:29sight, one that can help us live healthier, more
- 29:32fulfilled, and more productive lives. That's
- 29:36a cool quote. Like, doesn't that just put it
- 29:38so well? Because loneliness is a real thing.
- 29:42And loneliness has always existed. And, you know,
- 29:45it's really, it's always easy for us to say like
- 29:47our time's the worst. Our time is probably not
- 29:49the worst. But what I do highlight is that today,
- 29:53because technology can suck us away from connection
- 29:57with other people, that I think people are experiencing
- 30:01loneliness in part because it's really easy just
- 30:04to escape into your phone, escape into technology,
- 30:07not put yourself out there. Before we jump back
- 30:11in, can I ask you a quick favor? If you're enjoying
- 30:15the journey so far, will you like, rate? and
- 30:18subscribe to our show it helps us reach more
- 30:20people like you we can design and create and
- 30:24build the most wonderful place in the world but
- 30:27it takes people to make the dream a reality and
- 30:31so what it takes me to is i want to talk about
- 30:35your your game store okay because to me like
- 30:40it's it's the epitome of what that's talking
- 30:43about oh yeah And so tell me for you, why did
- 30:46you and Dan decide to start this game store when
- 30:50you're a senior software architect, right? And
- 30:54you've got a great career. You've got a great
- 30:56education. You've got a family, right? Why suddenly
- 31:00decide to start this game store? Yeah. So this
- 31:04started about just a little over three years
- 31:06ago when my sons and I, we got into a little
- 31:11game called Disney Lurkana. uh they made the
- 31:15announcement two or three d23s ago that there's
- 31:18a trading card game coming out with disney characters
- 31:21and like i mentioned earlier i've kind of always
- 31:23been into like that more like the nerdier side
- 31:25of things like the warhammer the magic and stuff
- 31:27like that and i've been a disney fan my entire
- 31:30life pretty much so i saw a lot of my interest
- 31:33kind of coming together and something i could
- 31:35do with my kids and stuff like that right so
- 31:37we got uh when it first came out we bought the
- 31:40cards and We were playing at home, just kitchen
- 31:43table and whatever. But it was kind of hard to
- 31:44get cards. They had underprinted the first set,
- 31:48and we were just trying to get our hands on as
- 31:50many cards as we could. The best way was to go
- 31:56to GameStop and their events, and you would get
- 32:00packs for participating. So we started visiting
- 32:03a lot of the game stores in the area, me and
- 32:06my two boys, two of my boys, and kind of started
- 32:10talking to other people in the space who also
- 32:13loved it. who loved card games. And I started
- 32:16kind of, I don't want to say coming out of my
- 32:19shell, but I started finding myself doing something
- 32:20I had never really done in my adult life, which
- 32:24was making friends outside of work. Yeah. Right.
- 32:27And that was just fascinating to me. Like I had
- 32:31such a different persona now in playing card
- 32:34games in the Disney world with, in all these
- 32:37card shops and game stores. And it... helped
- 32:42me so much and i was working at home at the time
- 32:44too right so like it helped me so and i get out
- 32:47of my little bubble and get out there i found
- 32:50myself doing things like approaching other people
- 32:52for the first time and talking to them and and
- 32:54being the instigator of conversations and stuff
- 32:56like that that i i didn't really do before right
- 32:59i was just kind of hid behind my computer working
- 33:01as a software engineer stuff like that so it
- 33:03helped me in like so many different ways i was
- 33:06like this is this is amazing right uh and over
- 33:10about like a year a year and a half of visiting
- 33:13all the game stores in in utah and traveling
- 33:16because of orkana i started realizing there's
- 33:18a lot of things we could do better right and
- 33:20realizing that there's a need there's a lot of
- 33:22people who come to these stores looking for something
- 33:24right uh they're looking for that connection
- 33:26and they're looking for a place to play they
- 33:28don't necessarily have that at home or or anything
- 33:30like that and that's when i approached uh dan
- 33:34langford um my business partner someone i've
- 33:38known for 16 years now. And I know he kind of
- 33:42has like a penchant for the nerdy stuff just
- 33:44like I do and stuff like that. So I approached
- 33:46him and I was like, hey, what do you think of
- 33:47this idea? Let's start a game store and let's
- 33:51just try to do it a little bit better. Right?
- 33:53And try to focus on what's important. And that's
- 33:55how we kind of came up with this idea of just
- 33:57the third space, a community. Yes, we sell cards,
- 34:01we sell games and things like that, but our focus
- 34:03is having a community, a place that people can
- 34:07come and just play games. Which, I mean, I think
- 34:11is such a needed thing. Because like you're saying,
- 34:17it's like a place that's not at work where you
- 34:20can actually connect with people and make friends.
- 34:22And people who have similar interests. Totally.
- 34:26Because at work, you're not always going to find
- 34:28people who have the same interests as you do.
- 34:31And it's not that it's bad to make friends at
- 34:33work. That's great, right? You want to like the
- 34:35people you work with. I love the people I work
- 34:36with, right? Our producer, one of the best guys
- 34:38around. Like I love working with this guy. And
- 34:41this is a yes and, right? And there's also like
- 34:44a need for it like outside of just working home.
- 34:48That's right. As you're talking about it, I kept
- 34:50coming back to like my own personal life. Like
- 34:52I used to do some community theater. Oh, very
- 34:55cool. And it was so that way. Yeah. It was like
- 34:57we had this shared experience. We had this shared
- 35:00love and passion for the theater and for performing.
- 35:03And it was building bonds and relationships and
- 35:06friendships in a way that is just totally unique
- 35:09from something you would find at work or at home.
- 35:11And was just like something that's really valuable.
- 35:14That's why I'm a big supporter of community theater.
- 35:16I think there's so much value in community theater
- 35:19for bringing people together, for the performers,
- 35:22for them connecting with the audience, right?
- 35:24um and um it's it's for that same reason that
- 35:27as i've started to get more exposure to this
- 35:29this game world it's it's exactly all the things
- 35:33that i loved about community theater and i'm
- 35:36just when i when i visited your shop it's exactly
- 35:38the way that i felt i saw it i saw it take place
- 35:41i saw people coming in and recognizing people
- 35:43and talking and connecting and people light up
- 35:47I could, I saw, I saw visibly people light up
- 35:50when they suddenly walked in and could have this
- 35:52community of people that they felt like they
- 35:54belonged, which is something that was really
- 35:56special. It was really cool. And again, it's
- 35:59just something that I think is so needed. You
- 36:01know, when you talk about, you made reference
- 36:04briefly to your love of Disney. Yes. So I want
- 36:06to go back to that and then we'll come and then
- 36:08we'll jump forward again. Because one of the
- 36:10things that I didn't ask you about that I want
- 36:12to go back to and ask you about was growing up.
- 36:14what your connection to Disney was and why that
- 36:17was something that became special for you. Because
- 36:18we talked about that before. So tell our audience
- 36:20about what you would do with Disney. I think
- 36:23it was Disney World specifically. Yeah, yeah,
- 36:25yeah. Specifically Disney World. So I went to
- 36:29Disney World and I don't know what the impetus
- 36:31was. I should probably ask them. But I was just
- 36:35like two months old, right? It was December of
- 36:371985. And they took us all to Disney World. Something
- 36:43my dad kind of fell in love with it and just
- 36:45started taking us pretty much every year after
- 36:47that. So all the memories I have, I mean, from
- 36:51the very beginning, Disney World's involved somewhere,
- 36:53right? We'd go. And what was nice about that
- 36:58is when you're moving around a lot and your life
- 37:01is changing a lot from like culture to culture,
- 37:03language to language, right? Being able to basically
- 37:07go home to Disney World. It was the constant
- 37:11in my life. And I just, I felt comfortable there.
- 37:16I felt like things wouldn't change, you know?
- 37:19Like, my life was just so much change and stuff
- 37:22that Disney World kind of provided that home
- 37:25feeling of like, no, this is home. This is where
- 37:29you come back to. Yeah. You know, every year.
- 37:32Are there any specific memories you have since
- 37:36you were there with your family of things? um
- 37:42i don't know that you do there wasn't something
- 37:43that was specific i just thought there's something
- 37:46yeah um the the the monorail people and i remember
- 37:54staying at the temporary resort and taking the
- 37:56monorail to the magic kingdom uh just the smell
- 37:59of the monorail um and like the turkey leg i
- 38:03remember our whole family we'd offer one turkey
- 38:05leg right because they're so big you know it'd
- 38:09be the whole family with it and and just it's
- 38:12just those those little things yeah you know
- 38:14when you were growing up what was your favorite
- 38:17park which one did it was always magic kingdom
- 38:19or did you guys go yeah as a kid obviously magic
- 38:21kingdom and then hollywood studios took over
- 38:23pretty quick and at the time mgm studios yeah
- 38:25yeah it was it was that at first and then yes
- 38:27yeah they eventually made change and initially
- 38:30uh it was relatively small it was they didn't
- 38:35think uh that it was going to be a whole day
- 38:38experience they thought people would just want
- 38:39to pop in there for a half a day and they quickly
- 38:41realized like oh no though there's more of a
- 38:43demand here yeah people want to be here a whole
- 38:46lot more often um i didn't go to to mgm uh MGM
- 38:51Studios, is that what it's called? I only went
- 38:54once it was Hollywood Studios many, many years
- 38:56later. In fact, the first time I went to Disney
- 38:58World was, I think, three years ago. So I didn't
- 38:59experience that. But at the time, didn't they
- 39:01have some kind of movie ride or something? Yeah,
- 39:03yeah, the Great Movie Ride. Yeah, what was that
- 39:05like? Yeah, it was pretty fun. Um, it was like
- 39:09a combination of a, a dark ride, but you had
- 39:11actors in the ride that were like interacting
- 39:13with you and zoo and stuff. Right. So you got
- 39:16on this train, you're going through, you're seeing
- 39:18a lot of scenes from, from movies, big movies
- 39:20at the time. And then you have like this mafia
- 39:23guys come in and they take your train hostage
- 39:26and like, they're driving you off. And it's just,
- 39:29it was really cool to kind of see them blend.
- 39:32Like just like a typical dark ride, but then
- 39:34with all the acting and theatrics that, you know,
- 39:36Disney and put it all together in one big show.
- 39:39Yeah. It was just really cool. I loved it. That
- 39:42was a lot of fun. Yeah. That would have been
- 39:44great to go on. Yeah. I'm sad that I missed that
- 39:47experience getting to go there. It's cool. Like
- 39:48think about it now though. Yeah. I don't know
- 39:52how well it would hold up nowadays, but I mean,
- 39:55sure. Also be hard, right? Having actors have
- 39:57to be a part of the ride all day, every single
- 39:59day. It takes a lot, right? It takes a lot to
- 40:01have to do that with as many people as you want
- 40:03to push through a line and push through because
- 40:06Disney wants to have good experiences and they
- 40:08want to have great experiences. They also have
- 40:10to push a lot of people through like a pretty
- 40:13high volume. I don't know what the stats are,
- 40:16but I've heard them at times, but how many turkey
- 40:18legs they go through in a day is insane. It's
- 40:22insane. I'm partial to a Disney churro, which
- 40:26they don't have much in Disney World. What's
- 40:29the deal with that? Can you explain that to me?
- 40:31What is going on? We need to ask Bob Weiss about
- 40:33that. Bob, what is going on? The churros are
- 40:35amazing. That's the one thing I do miss when
- 40:37we go to Disney World. The churros just aren't
- 40:39there. And all the different toppings, all the
- 40:41different... sauces you can dip it in it's not
- 40:43there yeah and i i mean every time we go i i
- 40:47just i could have 10 churros a day to be honest
- 40:50like they're so that's what we do every time
- 40:52we go i always try to find the special churro
- 40:53because those always they'll always be that one
- 40:55stand you know somewhere tucked away in the corner
- 40:57that's like the the themed churro of whatever
- 40:59it is you know for sure it's so good yeah when
- 41:02you go into disney california adventure a lot
- 41:04of times they'll have that right there in carthay
- 41:06circle yes the one rise you turn right for it
- 41:10yeah one Like over on Pixar Pier, right? I haven't
- 41:21always loved those ones over there. Sometimes
- 41:23they'll do some weird stuff. They'll insert some
- 41:25flavor into it. I'm like, that doesn't really
- 41:27hit for me. I'm like, well, where's the original
- 41:29one? And I go find it. But I still like trying
- 41:32it. I almost have to try it. Hey, if Disney's
- 41:36putting it out, it's probably going to be okay.
- 41:39They got a lot of trust from me. I will put myself
- 41:42out there with Disney stuff. So you kind of have
- 41:45this Disney connection. You go there and you
- 41:53have belonging there. And this kind of carries
- 41:55through like as Disney or Kana comes out and
- 41:58you have this connection with Disney and Disney
- 41:59characters. And now that you guys have this game
- 42:03shop that you've got going, what's that experience
- 42:05been like for you of having this game shop where
- 42:10people are connecting and they are coming? What's
- 42:14that emotional experience like for you? It's
- 42:16been amazing. Just to share kind of a story along
- 42:20those lines. We've not even been open a whole
- 42:23year yet, right? We're seven months, eight months
- 42:26in. A couple of months ago, kind of going with
- 42:30the whole theme of like bringing people together
- 42:32and providing a place for people. We have this
- 42:35one magic player. and she's really into magic,
- 42:41and she's also really into girly stuff. And usually
- 42:43magic, the gathering, and girly stuff don't really
- 42:45quite, you know, fit together. And she's got
- 42:49a lot of friends across the valley, and she did
- 42:54a magic girly night at our store. And all these
- 42:59women would come together, and they would bedazzle
- 43:01their deck boxes and their little top loaders,
- 43:03and they would play magic together and stuff,
- 43:06and it was just for them. a couple of them came
- 43:09up to us after just saying how they'll never
- 43:12be able to do this at any other game store and
- 43:14how they felt so safe and they felt like cared
- 43:18for and a community for them to kind of just
- 43:22do this that normally you wouldn't find in the
- 43:24magic community doing that. And that was to me,
- 43:28probably the greatest thing that they could have
- 43:30said that we provided a place for them to be
- 43:33able to be themselves, right. To find common
- 43:36ground among. all the girlies here in Utah to
- 43:39get together and just do what they wanted to
- 43:41do with magic, you know, and provide a safe space
- 43:43for them and a community for them to do that.
- 43:46And that to me is like, we've achieved it. You
- 43:49know what I mean? Like, even if it's not financially
- 43:51successful or anything like that, but if we can
- 43:53give people like this, that kind of place, I'm
- 43:55just like, I'm elated. Yeah. It's so great. It's,
- 43:58I mean, that just takes me right back to one
- 44:00of the really famous things that Simon Sinek
- 44:02said, which is people don't buy what you do.
- 44:04They buy why you do it. Yeah. And I feel like
- 44:07that's what you and Dan have created is people
- 44:11connect with the reason that you're doing it.
- 44:13Like, yeah, you got to sell cards. Like, yes,
- 44:17that's part of what it does to keep the doors
- 44:18open. But the purpose is to have this belonging.
- 44:21The purpose is to build this community, to give
- 44:23people a place. Right. And clearly people are
- 44:27connecting with that. And that's why they keep
- 44:30coming back. Right. So one of the things I want
- 44:33to ask you about, so like you guys will. you'll
- 44:35have these games that people are playing, they're
- 44:37playing them against each other, right? Like
- 44:40if it's a tournament, people, there's winners
- 44:42and there's losers, right? And so like in my
- 44:45world, in the divorce world, like there are certainly
- 44:48winners and losers and that there's a lot of
- 44:52discord that happens, right? A lot of disharmony.
- 44:55What is it about the games that you guys do or
- 44:59the tournaments that you run that allow for competition?
- 45:04Yeah. But also allow for the coming together
- 45:07and still that sense of belonging with people
- 45:09who respect each other and care for each other
- 45:11and know each other and want to do it together.
- 45:13Yeah. Yeah. That's a really good question. I
- 45:16think a lot of it is just being able to do the
- 45:22thing you love. Right. So there is competition
- 45:26and sometimes it is a bummer to lose out and
- 45:29not get the prize that you were hoping for. But
- 45:31at the end of the day, you got to do the thing
- 45:33that. you loved right which was play lurkan or
- 45:37play magic or whatever it is that you're doing
- 45:39but it's it's a thing you love you know um and
- 45:42i think that's what gets people you know coming
- 45:46back because we're just providing a place for
- 45:48you to do the thing that you love to do and eventually
- 45:51too like i said like i've made some of the best
- 45:53friends in my life playing uh disney lurkana
- 45:56you know even though they're oftentimes they're
- 45:59my competitors in the tournament yeah you still
- 46:01end up just loving that you're doing this with
- 46:04them the thing you love with people that you
- 46:06love and it's just it's it's really cool it's
- 46:08a it's a very cool different thing to be a part
- 46:12of yeah for like a better word right it's a thing
- 46:15it's a thing yeah um well in relation to that
- 46:18thing um one of the things we could call that
- 46:21thing would even maybe be a movement dare i say
- 46:25and here's why i say that i found a quote uh
- 46:27from uh derek sievers um and it was a ted talk
- 46:31that he gave and it was called how to start a
- 46:33movement okay um and he said if you really care
- 46:36about starting a movement have the courage to
- 46:38follow and show others how to follow and when
- 46:41you find a lone nut doing something great have
- 46:43the guts to be the first one to stand up and
- 46:45join in oh that's very cool i just love it like
- 46:48yeah you know you you and dan obviously have
- 46:52a love for games and a love for doing things
- 46:54you guys have known each other for a while and
- 46:55one of you on your own maybe could have done
- 46:58it but what i love is the two of you came together
- 47:00yeah like hey we see something here right we
- 47:03see something that's going on we see people connecting
- 47:05we see there's there's a need in the market and
- 47:08we're gonna we're gonna join together and do
- 47:11this thing together And then as people have come
- 47:14in, they've come in and seen that and then want
- 47:17to join that movement and bring their friends
- 47:19and join that movement. Yes. And it starts to
- 47:21build momentum that way, which I think is something
- 47:23really great. Yeah, we've definitely noticed
- 47:25the momentum piece of it. We've not done any
- 47:27kind of marketing at all. We do have a Facebook
- 47:29page that we post events and stuff like that,
- 47:31but it's not huge. Everyone just brings their
- 47:33friends. And that's where all of our growth has
- 47:36been. People get so excited about it, they bring
- 47:39the people they love to it. Like, hey, come do
- 47:41this with me. That's been really cool to watch
- 47:44that. What are you most excited about right now?
- 47:50In general. It doesn't have to just be the game
- 47:52store, but in general. What are you most excited
- 47:54about right now? Putting me on the spot there.
- 47:59I know. Just in general. What am I most excited
- 48:02about? It could be the game store. Well, I'm
- 48:04going to Disney World in three weeks. We're really
- 48:08looking forward to that. Yeah. Okay. I love it.
- 48:10Yeah. Getting ready for that. All the kids keep
- 48:12talking about it. So taking the whole family.
- 48:14Yeah. We're taking the whole family. And remind
- 48:16me how many kids you have. I have four kids.
- 48:17Four kids. Ages. What to what? 17 down to 10.
- 48:23Okay. So very, very similar to mine. Mine are
- 48:2517 down to six. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Quite
- 48:28the spread. Um, so you guys are going to Disney
- 48:31world. Yes. How many days? Uh, eight, seven,
- 48:34eight. Eight, nine days. Let's go. So you're
- 48:37going to get all the parks. Yes, we could. But
- 48:42you're not going to. We're not going to. Okay.
- 48:43You're going to do which parks? We were just
- 48:46there not too long ago. So we're going to focus
- 48:48on the parks that have new stuff. So there's
- 48:50been a couple of new things come out in the park
- 48:52since we were last there. We're going to focus
- 48:53on those. Okay. There's a couple of parks that
- 48:55we might just have to skip. Yeah. Are you guys
- 48:58going to go hang out at the beach for part of
- 49:01it? Are you going to go to Universal for part
- 49:02of it? Where are you staying? Old Key West. Old
- 49:10Key West, okay. Yeah, we love Old Key West. But
- 49:14we love just going to the different resorts.
- 49:16Yeah. My wife and I are big foodies, and we love
- 49:19all the food at Disney World, and we love that
- 49:20over the last 10, 15 years, Disney World has
- 49:22focused really heavily on the food we have. And
- 49:27we're going for the... Okay, fun. At Epcot. Yeah.
- 49:31We just love walking to the different resorts
- 49:33or taking the monorail or the... the new and
- 49:36the Skyliner over to the different resorts and
- 49:38just putting the food there and stuff like that,
- 49:40right? So we love doing that aspect to it just
- 49:42as much as the parks. Do you guys go to Disney
- 49:44Springs much? We do. Yeah, I love Springs. Yeah,
- 49:47it's great. And it's huge. It is. Because, again,
- 49:51I'm a Disneyland guy. Yeah, yeah, where you have
- 49:53your downtown. Yeah, I mean, downtown Disney
- 49:55is great, but it's not nearly the size of Disney
- 49:58Springs. That place is humongous and got some
- 50:00really fun food places. There's a barbecue place
- 50:04there. Have you been a pig? Yes. That place is
- 50:08legit. They have fantastic Brussels sprouts.
- 50:10They actually do. That's exactly right. They're
- 50:14y 'all y 'all got to go and you got to get the
- 50:17Brussels sprouts at this barbecue place. Yep.
- 50:19Because you're going to taste me like, wow, I've
- 50:21never had Brussels sprouts like that ever before.
- 50:24The only time I've had ones as good as like really,
- 50:25really fancy restaurants where you're like really
- 50:28expensive. Correct. I mean, they're not cheap
- 50:30there, but like they're not nearly expensive
- 50:32as a fancy restaurant. They're amazing. Totally
- 50:35great. Yeah, totally great. Disney Springs is
- 50:37a fun time. What's good? You guys are going to
- 50:39have fun there. Yeah. Good. Well, not everywhere
- 50:42can be the happiest place on earth. And at RCG
- 50:46Law Group, my job outside of our podcast, we
- 50:49get that. Life throws curveballs, legal stuff,
- 50:53family stuff, the things you didn't see coming.
- 50:55That's what we're here for. If you're dealing
- 50:58with something and don't know where to turn,
- 51:00give RCG a call. What we'll do at the end is
- 51:04we're going to circle back to see if you have
- 51:05any final thoughts about Robin Hood. We didn't
- 51:08talk about Wally. No. We can. All right. We can.
- 51:12We'll circle back to that. Before we get there,
- 51:13I want to do a couple of quick fun segments with
- 51:15you. Okay. We're going to do a this or that and
- 51:16then a rapid fire. Okay. Okay. So this or that.
- 51:19Make your choice of which one you think it is.
- 51:21No stress. No pressure. I'll always have opinions
- 51:25as well. Sure. So, fear not. Robin Hood or Little
- 51:29John? Oh, Robin Hood. He's so great. Now, Little
- 51:33John's fun. Of course, it's Robin. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:35Of course it is. Bow and arrow or sword? Oh,
- 51:40bow and arrow. You bow and arrow guy? Yeah. I'm
- 51:42a distance. I don't want to fight. Keep your
- 51:45distance. You don't need close combat. Okay.
- 51:47I can appreciate that. Yeah. I can totally appreciate
- 51:49that. Sherwood Forest or the castle? Castle.
- 51:55Okay. I mean, castles are cool. Castles are cool.
- 51:58Man, castles are so awesome. Very cool. Are there
- 52:01any castles in Sweden? Sorry, Switzerland? Switzerland.
- 52:05Yeah, there are. You would find like in France
- 52:08or Germany or anything like that. I don't know,
- 52:09but they're there. They're there? For sure. They're
- 52:10pretty cool? Have you visited many of them? Oh,
- 52:13yeah. Yeah. Definitely. Are there like some in
- 52:16the Alps? See, that would be cool. That would
- 52:18be cool. Not that I know of. I don't know. Someone's
- 52:21going to call me out on that. I know. Well, we're
- 52:23going to find out, right? We're going to find
- 52:24out if there's a castle in the house. Not far
- 52:26from Neuschwanstein. which is you know southern
- 52:29germany which was the castle that walt disney
- 52:32based the cinderella castle or the magic kingdom
- 52:34is based on neuschwanstein that's not very far
- 52:37from switzerland so like is that the one that's
- 52:39in soaring over the world yes that's the one
- 52:42is it really that's just in southern germany
- 52:44man that thing it's not too far oh i'd love to
- 52:47go it's gorgeous i've been there my it's fantastic
- 52:49goodness that's why i say castles for sure i
- 52:52get it and i'm not much of a nature i don't do
- 52:54camping Okay. So you're like, no. I work with
- 52:56computers. Yeah, that's fair. Look, that's fair.
- 52:59I like my modern conveniences. I do too. And
- 53:02I grew up in Boy Scouts. So I grew up half into
- 53:05camp like we had to. My dad was a scout master.
- 53:08So we had to. He's got a lot of that. And he
- 53:10also loves the national parks. And Utah has a
- 53:13ton, right? Admittedly. National parks are fantastic.
- 53:15I'm not trying to take away from that. But I
- 53:17am not a camper, man. Bro, I had to go. I had
- 53:21to. I shouldn't say it that way. I had the opportunity.
- 53:24to go to a young men's camp with my two boys
- 53:27this summer um and we went to the green river
- 53:31and did some canyoning oh yeah which was great
- 53:33but bro sleeping in a tent it was oh it's for
- 53:39the birds man yeah i was like there's a reason
- 53:41i haven't done this in like 15 years because
- 53:43i do not care for that i should have been smart
- 53:46there was a couple other leaders they had like
- 53:49Big old trailers they brought with AC. Oh, there
- 53:52you go. Bro, I was like, y 'all didn't invite
- 53:54me in. You're making me sleep in the tent? But
- 53:57at that point, just go to the nearest hotel.
- 53:59And I'm all about hiking. I'll go hiking. I'll
- 54:02enjoy, you know, Switzerland. We have amazing
- 54:04nature and love being outdoors. But, yeah, when
- 54:09it comes to sleeping or bathrooms or anything
- 54:11like that, just give me modern, you know, amenities.
- 54:14Yeah, I'm with you. There was a... There was
- 54:17a hotel that was about 15 minutes outside of
- 54:19camp. And me and one of the other leaders, we
- 54:21were very close to staying there. Like, very
- 54:25close. I toughed it out. I made it work for the
- 54:28three nights that we were there, but I was tempted.
- 54:31Okay, Maid Marian or Lady Cluck? Okay, that's
- 54:35a really good question. So, I might get to this.
- 54:40My favorite song, I love Love. The song's Love.
- 54:43That made Marion's favorite Disney song. So I
- 54:48love that. But going back to that scene where
- 54:51they're all fighting after the archery thing,
- 54:55Lady Cluck rolls up her arms and she gets in
- 54:57there. She just starts fighting for the sake
- 54:59of fighting. And it's hilarious. And I love Lady
- 55:02Cluck for that. She's got some gumption, man.
- 55:04Yeah, for real. She'll be one of my favorites
- 55:06just because of that scene where she just gets
- 55:08in there. She's so great. So Chris, that's a
- 55:10tough one for me. Probably I'm going to go with
- 55:13Made Marian. Made Marian. Yeah. Because the song.
- 55:16My song. I love that song. Totally makes sense.
- 55:17Yeah. Okay. Board games or video games? Video
- 55:22games. Okay. What's your, if you had to pick
- 55:24one, what's your favorite video game? Oh, Mario.
- 55:27Like the rich? The OG? Mario 64. The OG Mario.
- 55:30Mario 3. Okay. Mario 2. Mario Odyssey. Okay.
- 55:34How about this? I could keep going. I'm going
- 55:35to go with this or that or that. Mario 1, 2,
- 55:38or 3? 3. I loved 3. It was so good. It was really
- 55:42fun. I will admit, because I didn't have a lot
- 55:45of patience to make out with the games a lot
- 55:46of times, I would like to find the ways that
- 55:48I could then skip ahead of the worlds. I cheated
- 55:50like 100%. You get the flute and you move on
- 55:52to the next. Let me cheat. Number two, I never
- 55:55passed. I never beat number two. It was hard,
- 55:58man. Yeah. It was a tough game. Okay. Pokemon
- 56:02or Lorkana? Lorkana. Pokemon or Magic? Respect
- 56:07to Magic for introducing card games. We have
- 56:10TCGs because of magic, so respect. I'm going
- 56:13to have to say magic. Okay. Totally fair. Game
- 56:17night at home or game night at the game store?
- 56:20Game store. Okay. Do you bring your kids there
- 56:23ever? Oh, yeah. I'm there all the time with my
- 56:25kids. I'm sure they love it. Yeah. I'm sure they
- 56:27love it. Opening a pack or trading for the card
- 56:31you want? Opening a pack. That hits different.
- 56:34Yeah. Does it? Yeah. Opening a pack. Yeah. It's
- 56:37like crack. People love that stuff, man. I mean,
- 56:40they call it cardboard crack for a reason. Opening
- 56:42packs, there's something there. Okay, I love
- 56:44it. Disneyland or Disney World? Yeah, Disney
- 56:48World for sure. And that's where you went? Yeah,
- 56:50just nostalgia, right? Totally. Yeah, that's
- 56:54why for me it's Disneyland, right? But boy, I'll
- 56:56let me have some Disney World. Now that I've
- 56:57been twice, man, it's fun. I love Epcot. There's
- 57:00always something to do. Like, Epcot is... That's
- 57:04my favorite in the Disney World area. Like, it's
- 57:06so good. The food's great. They've got amazing
- 57:09rides. That new Guardians ride, unbelievable.
- 57:13It is the best roller coaster. Like, it just
- 57:15totally is. It's so good. Okay, here's our rapid
- 57:17fire. Okay. Okay, so we are going to get to that
- 57:19one question, but we will get in there in a second.
- 57:21Favorite Disney movie? Right now, it's WALL -E.
- 57:25Okay. I love WALL -E. Okay, so since we didn't
- 57:28get to WALL -E, even though this is rapid fire,
- 57:30we're going to pretend like it's not rapid fire.
- 57:32Tell me more about WALL -E. um about why you
- 57:34love it and if there's any kind of connection
- 57:36to the kind of stuff we were talking about yeah
- 57:37definitely um i love wally the robot i feel like
- 57:44how the creators of that movie were able to give
- 57:48him such a personality make him so likable so
- 57:50quickly without dialogue is phenomenal it's artistry
- 57:54like it's like you immediately fall in love with
- 57:56this little robot you're like oh my gosh i'm
- 57:57emotionally attached to this kid he hasn't said
- 57:59anything like this is amazing yeah so and then
- 58:02The way he treats Eve too. Right. And then just
- 58:08how he goes about and wakes up all the humans
- 58:13kind of from their screens just by fumbling around.
- 58:16Right. Like he wasn't trying to do a big movement.
- 58:20He wasn't trying to cause a commotion, but just
- 58:23by being himself, he just caused all these people
- 58:26to kind of come back to earth. Yeah. Right. And
- 58:28I just, I love that. Yeah. Such a great story.
- 58:31It's a great story. It's so well told. It was
- 58:34such a risk. Yeah. Right. You're going to have
- 58:36a movie where there's basically no dialogue for
- 58:38the first half an hour of an animated movie.
- 58:41Yep. Like that's risky. And I think they pulled
- 58:44it off and it's terrific. I love that. Always
- 58:48amazing. Okay. Favorite Disney song. Love. Love.
- 58:52Yeah. You know, what's funny is I was, I was
- 58:54trying to download the soundtrack. Earlier today,
- 58:59I have Apple Music, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:02And the soundtrack, only like two songs are available
- 59:04to do. Like the rest of them are blacked out.
- 59:06I'm like, what? Come on, Apple. For reals. And
- 59:09Love's not one of the ones that I could. I was
- 59:11like, that is such a ripoff. I was not really
- 59:13happy. You have to go to YouTube for that one.
- 59:14Okay, so that's why. I was like, because normally
- 59:16Apple Music has everything I want. Correct. Normally.
- 59:19Yeah, yeah. So it was very surprising when they
- 59:21didn't. I was very disappointed. Okay, I'm going
- 59:22to go to YouTube. Favorite Disney princess? Belle.
- 59:30Okay. Tell me why. That's a really good question.
- 59:39I don't know. I felt she just, I don't know.
- 59:42She was just cool. She was different. She was
- 59:45nerdy. Yeah. I guess. There you go. That's what
- 59:49it is. Yeah. She was in her book. She wasn't
- 59:51into Gaston. Yeah. Like all the other women.
- 59:53And I'm no Gaston, you know. You're like, I like
- 59:57the girl who's going to respect me for my brain.
- 59:59Yeah, for reals, right? The one who's also nerdy.
- 1:00:02Yeah, no. I'm going to say Belle. bell was great
- 1:00:04i loved bell yeah um i thought she was uh sharp
- 1:00:09and quirky and endearing yeah um yeah i always
- 1:00:13i always loved bell um favorite ride at any disney
- 1:00:16park right now it's the ratatouille right it's
- 1:00:22so good though like yeah i get emotional writing
- 1:00:26that right right now it's so good how come i
- 1:00:28love it i don't know just like the music being
- 1:00:30like on top of the the roofs and in france you
- 1:00:34know when you're walking to the queue and the
- 1:00:35music's playing ratatouille and just yeah i love
- 1:00:39the story and everything there's just something
- 1:00:41about it it's so great yeah so the last time
- 1:00:43we were at disney world uh it was just it was
- 1:00:46my wife and my two girls and it was we were at
- 1:00:50epcot obviously and it was pouring rain yeah
- 1:00:52like so hard we were absolutely drenched and
- 1:00:56so a lot of people had left the park because
- 1:00:59it was raining so hard And we were over in France.
- 1:01:02Yeah. And there was hardly anybody in line. And
- 1:01:06so we would get done. They're like, go right
- 1:01:09back in. We're like, sweet. We're like three
- 1:01:11or four times in a row. I'm like, this is amazing.
- 1:01:13I love it. And it's chill. It's nice. You can
- 1:01:16just hang out and just enjoy a good story. I
- 1:01:18don't know. That's where I'm at right now. But
- 1:01:20I do, I will say honorable mention to Tower of
- 1:01:23Terror. Okay. There's nothing quite like that
- 1:01:25one. So I, before. at Disneyland and California
- 1:01:30Adventure, Tower of Terror was my ride. Like
- 1:01:32100 % was my ride. I loved everything about it.
- 1:01:34I loved what they did with the original guy from
- 1:01:37it, how they were able to adapt his voice to
- 1:01:39have him say the stuff, like the music from it.
- 1:01:42It was my jam. And I was so nervous when they
- 1:01:45were changing it to Guardians. I was like, how
- 1:01:47could they do this to my beloved Tower of Terror?
- 1:01:49Agreed. I was with you. And now I love Guardians.
- 1:01:51Oh, they pulled it off. But I'm glad that Tower
- 1:01:54of Terror is still available. Yeah, hopefully
- 1:01:55they don't change it out in Hollywood Studios.
- 1:01:57Hopefully not. The whole vibe is amazing. They
- 1:01:59need to keep both because now both are amazing
- 1:02:01and you have different experiences in parks.
- 1:02:03Tower of Terror is so good, though. It's amazing.
- 1:02:05Man, I love it. Okay, favorite Lorkana card.
- 1:02:09Oh, it's a Robin Hood card. Is it? It's called
- 1:02:12Sneaky Sleuth. Okay, and what does Sneaky Sleuth
- 1:02:14do? He gains extra lore. So in the game, you're
- 1:02:19trying to get 20 lore before your opponent. He
- 1:02:22gets extra lore for every damaged. opposing character
- 1:02:25which is really fun but the artwork of that card
- 1:02:27is my favorite artwork of any work on a card
- 1:02:30it's him sneaking on the roofs and you have like
- 1:02:32the moon in the background it's just it's so
- 1:02:35well done do you do you play with it do you use
- 1:02:39it or do you keep it separate because i don't
- 1:02:41i have i have a ton it's it's it's a pretty common
- 1:02:43card okay right so i have like a ton of copies
- 1:02:45of it okay when i true i will play with it as
- 1:02:49soon as i get an opportunity to play with it
- 1:02:51you know i just love that card that's totally
- 1:02:53fair yeah Um, okay. Favorite video game console
- 1:02:56of all time. Oh, just cause of memories. The
- 1:03:0064. The Nintendo 64. That controller and everything.
- 1:03:03Like all the games that came out, man. The age
- 1:03:06I was when it came out. I say the 64 is my. Yeah.
- 1:03:10You were born in 85? Yes. Okay. For me, it was
- 1:03:14a Super Nintendo. Okay. I love the original Nintendo.
- 1:03:16Then Super Nintendo came out and I played like
- 1:03:19Street Fighter 2, which was funny because there's
- 1:03:22no Street Fighter 1. Street Fighter 2. But man,
- 1:03:25there was something about that. And then when
- 1:03:2864 came out, I hadn't been playing as much. So
- 1:03:31I didn't get quite the connection with 64. And
- 1:03:34then once I started playing video games again,
- 1:03:36it was once I was in my 20s and it was Xbox.
- 1:03:38And I started playing a lot. And then now I play
- 1:03:40Call of Duty. In fact, I'm playing Call of Duty
- 1:03:42tonight with my buddies. We're getting together
- 1:03:44in person until they're going to... Oh, that's
- 1:03:46cool. Like an actual couch co -op. Yes. I love
- 1:03:50that. Like we've got... I'm such a nerd that
- 1:03:52I've got... four TVs on my wall, like, and we
- 1:03:56all hook in our systems to our own TV and then
- 1:03:59sit there and play. Cause we were such nerds,
- 1:04:01but it's such a good time. Cause we're like together,
- 1:04:03right? Like we're together. It's a great time.
- 1:04:05I freaking love it. I never got an Xbox right.
- 1:04:07And so it was always Nintendo for me. It's always
- 1:04:08a Nintendo guy. Um, my wife was big into Nintendo
- 1:04:12and, uh, a few years back, she got one of those
- 1:04:16ones that comes pre -programmed with all the
- 1:04:17Nintendo games basically. And it was so fun because
- 1:04:20then We have, like, the hooked -in controllers
- 1:04:23with the original ones, and my little girls are
- 1:04:24sitting there playing, like, Mario with us and
- 1:04:27playing all these games. It was so fun. Yeah,
- 1:04:30I love those. Like, such memory lane for us.
- 1:04:32Yeah. And they loved it. Yeah. They're still
- 1:04:34fun games. We have one at the store. Do you really?
- 1:04:37We have, like, a little lounge section with the
- 1:04:38TV, and we have a Super Nintendo preloaded with,
- 1:04:40like, a bunch of games. That's amazing. The kids
- 1:04:43love it. Yeah, I'm sure they do. Yeah, it sounds
- 1:04:45awesome. I need to bring my kids to your store
- 1:04:46now. Okay. Robin Hood character you most relate
- 1:04:51to? Just like we were kind of talking about this
- 1:04:59a little bit earlier. I'm not much of a, like
- 1:05:02in front of the camera kind of a guy. I'm like
- 1:05:05behind the scenes. So I have to say Friar Tuck.
- 1:05:06I was going to guess that. In my head, I'm like,
- 1:05:09he's got to be Friar Tuck. Yeah. Friar Tuck is
- 1:05:12great. Yeah. Friar Tuck is awesome. For me, it's
- 1:05:16probably Little John. Okay. Like, I just, I like
- 1:05:20that he's just. fun and he's also there to like
- 1:05:23he is there to help and he will do anything uh
- 1:05:26but he doesn't have to be the leading man correct
- 1:05:28but he's just like there's just something about
- 1:05:31little john that i just love i just think he's
- 1:05:33funny and fun he's a good time um okay what is
- 1:05:37the question or questions that i should have
- 1:05:41asked you that i didn't either about robin hood
- 1:05:44or about huawei or anything that you had had
- 1:05:47on your mind that you wanted to talk about that
- 1:05:49we didn't get to if there's anything Oh, you
- 1:05:54asked so many more questions than I thought you
- 1:05:55were going to ask. Okay. So we might be good.
- 1:05:57We might be good. Okay. I love it. Yeah. I love
- 1:06:00it. Well, what we like to do is we'd like to
- 1:06:02end every episode and give our, our audience
- 1:06:05three actionable takeaways. So three things that
- 1:06:09they can put into action in their life today
- 1:06:12or this week, they can immediately do and, and
- 1:06:15relating to the topic. So here ways that they
- 1:06:17can help to create a better sense of belonging
- 1:06:21in their lives, be better peacemakers and bring
- 1:06:25more of that. So what would your three actionable
- 1:06:27takeaways be? Yeah, if I actually. You wrote
- 1:06:30them down. Let's go. Let's go. Tying to Robin
- 1:06:37Hood and WALL -E that we didn't actually discuss
- 1:06:40too much, but I think there's like a lot in WALL
- 1:06:42-E that, you know, we can draw upon. But yeah,
- 1:06:47as far as like. finding common ground something
- 1:06:50to feel like i had to do a lot growing up moving
- 1:06:54around stuff like that you know what i mean and
- 1:06:56now nowadays in today's world with technology
- 1:06:59i feel like that's more important than ever just
- 1:07:01trying to find the commonality and stuff right
- 1:07:04so um number one and this is this is a big one
- 1:07:07i know especially like in the business space
- 1:07:08like people use this word a lot but i would say
- 1:07:10be curious right get curious before you get convincing
- 1:07:15Before you're trying to push your views to somebody,
- 1:07:18get curious into why their views are their views.
- 1:07:20I like the way you said that. Why they play the
- 1:07:22games they play or do the things that they do.
- 1:07:24Before you're trying to push your stuff onto
- 1:07:26them, be curious. Get curious and find out more
- 1:07:29about them. That's number one. Get curious before
- 1:07:31you get convincing. I've never heard it said
- 1:07:34that way, and I really like that. Okay, that's
- 1:07:36excellent. What's the next one? Tying to Wally.
- 1:07:40Sorry, on the curiosity thing. This is one of
- 1:07:42the things that I love about Wally. is when he's
- 1:07:44digging up through the trash it's just trash
- 1:07:46i just love how he like interacts with all the
- 1:07:48trash and he like takes it home like there's
- 1:07:50a cool piece of trash he takes it home oh yeah
- 1:07:52and just his curiosity that he brings to everything
- 1:07:54like that's i i love that it's enviable when
- 1:07:58he sees eve totally different robot he's not
- 1:08:00scared of it right he's curious he's like i need
- 1:08:02to find out more about this Robot thing. Anyway.
- 1:08:05Yeah. Cause like when he's, when he's finding
- 1:08:06stuff too, what you made me think of is like,
- 1:08:08he finds the bra. Yeah. Cause he doesn't know.
- 1:08:12Yeah. He's just curious about it. He's just curious
- 1:08:14about it. Exactly. It's a great example of the
- 1:08:16curiosity. Yeah. I love that. So, so number one,
- 1:08:19get curious. Number two, um, make it human. Right.
- 1:08:23Don't categorize. Um, I feel like that's, that's
- 1:08:26something that when you're playing games, when
- 1:08:28you're sitting across the table from somebody
- 1:08:29you brought up earlier through your opponent,
- 1:08:31sure. But they're also human. Right. And then
- 1:08:33you can make a connection there. Love it. I think
- 1:08:36that just remember that whoever you're interacting
- 1:08:40with, whoever you're trying to find common ground
- 1:08:41with is just like you. They're human, right?
- 1:08:44So find the humanity in it. And don't categorize.
- 1:08:47Don't lump people into something. Because then
- 1:08:48you remove their humanity and you either don't
- 1:08:52treat them the same or don't view them the same.
- 1:08:54You know what I mean? So number two, make it
- 1:08:57human. And number three, this one's probably
- 1:08:58my favorite. And you kind of touched on it a
- 1:09:01little bit with Little John. uh be humorous lighten
- 1:09:05up yeah right yeah being able to not take yourself
- 1:09:08too seriously yeah i think it's really important
- 1:09:11for sure and trying to find common ground with
- 1:09:13people and trying to help people and yeah i think
- 1:09:16robin hood and little john did such a fantastic
- 1:09:18job at that They're being chased by the guards.
- 1:09:21They're having arrows thrown at them. He finds
- 1:09:23the arrow in his hat at the very beginning. He
- 1:09:25kind of laughs about it. He's like, oh, yeah,
- 1:09:26that got close, you know, and they kind of laugh.
- 1:09:28You know, you're like, okay, you almost died.
- 1:09:30But yeah, sure, let's laugh about it. And I think
- 1:09:32they're just such a great example of, you know,
- 1:09:36just being humorous. Yeah. Yeah, and then a related
- 1:09:41thing with that is when he has, Robin Hood has
- 1:09:44to jump into the water. And they're shooting
- 1:09:46the arrows, right? And he lets his hat float
- 1:09:48up and it looks like he is. And then he's really
- 1:09:50got the read, right? That he's doing. And then
- 1:09:54when he goes over to where it's at and little
- 1:09:55John's there and then he squirts him in the face
- 1:09:57with the water and little John's like, oh man,
- 1:09:59you totally got me. Yes. Right? Like just like
- 1:10:02the levity. Like in a very serious situation
- 1:10:04and they still find a way to kind of be humorous
- 1:10:07and just kind of have fun. Yeah. I think that's
- 1:10:09fantastic. Well, those are terrific takeaways.
- 1:10:11Thank you for sharing those. Thank you for sharing.
- 1:10:14so generously of your time uh your experiences
- 1:10:17of your childhood uh of the things that have
- 1:10:20have motivated you to create this amazing space
- 1:10:23that you guys have over there at hearthside games
- 1:10:25and what that does for the community what that
- 1:10:27does for a sense of belonging for the people
- 1:10:28who who go and connect and and have a great place
- 1:10:32that brings a little bit more i would say like
- 1:10:34light and joy into this life which i think is
- 1:10:36super special and amazing absolutely thanks brother
- 1:10:38yeah thank you so much for having me yeah as
- 1:10:42you leave this conversation remember that yes
- 1:10:44the past can hurt and you can either run from
- 1:10:47it or you can learn from it so here's to learning
- 1:10:50and finding joy in the journey see you real soon
