- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He is
- 0:20Speaker 2: Paul Pabst. Paul, we got a game in the books.
- 0:22Speaker 4: We got one in the books. Wednesday night football. I
- 0:25Speaker 4: sit down. I take the afternoon nap like a professional.
- 0:27Speaker 4: Get set for the big game on NBC. I put
- 0:29Speaker 4: it on, and my wife walks in, and she goes, Wednesday?
- 0:32Speaker 4: They're playing on Wednesdays now? I thought Wednesdays and Tuesdays
- 0:35Speaker 4: was for us.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I could get used to this, by the way.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I take a game every night of the week.
- 0:39Speaker 4: I got to tell you, I was fine with it.
- 0:41Speaker 4: I loved it. I was fired up for the start
- 0:42Speaker 4: of the game. I was looking forward to maybe a shootout.
- 0:44Speaker 4: I should have known better, more defensive teams.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a not-so-fast moment. The game started. It was
- 0:49Speaker 2: a grind, and then Sam Darnold got hurt.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's what took the air out of
- 0:53Speaker 4: the room. You got the Super Bowl champs, big crowd, NBC,
- 0:56Speaker 4: everything you'd want. Cam Chancellor is there getting the crowd
- 0:59Speaker 4: fired up and Sam Darnold on the fifth play of
- 1:01Speaker 4: the game goes down. We're going to talk more about
- 1:03Speaker 4: that But it felt maybe worse.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Yeah, what was your reaction? What did you think it was?
- 1:07Speaker 4: I think I'm conditioned. Maybe I got a little triggered
- 1:10Speaker 4: after what happened to Aaron Rodgers a couple years ago.
- 1:12Speaker 4: I start looking on the replay. Was that his Achilles?
- 1:14Speaker 4: I'm looking for that Achilles thing. And I thought the worst.
- 1:16Speaker 4: We'll keep an eye on that.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, we were texting back and forth all night like
- 1:19Speaker 2: we used to. One of the ones texting sent me,
- 1:22Speaker 2: in the third quarter, the game started to pick up
- 1:23Speaker 2: a little bit. And you wrote, we're back, exclamation point.
- 1:26Speaker 4: We're back. Sam Darnold wasn't back. You could see here
- 1:28Speaker 4: he's scrambling. When I saw that on the turf, I'm like...
- 1:31Speaker 4: Not the Achilles, not the Achilles.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yeah, the game did pick up. And then I think
- 1:34Speaker 2: the story shifted not to Drew Locke, who was great
- 1:38Speaker 2: for the Seahawks.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Did a nice job.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Played a really good job. To Drake May. To me,
- 1:41Speaker 2: the story of the game was Drake May and his struggles,
- 1:43Speaker 2: especially late in the game.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Yeah, he looked like he was doing enough in the
- 1:46Speaker 4: first half. They were running the ball a little bit.
- 1:48Speaker 4: He was moving the ball down the field against the
- 1:50Speaker 4: toughest defense. And he scrambles well. He gets out of
- 1:52Speaker 4: the pocket well. But that fourth quarter, it's like every
- 1:55Speaker 4: decision he made in the fourth quarter was the wrong one.
- 1:58Speaker 4: I mean, the pass to Dobbs was double coverage. The
- 2:00Speaker 4: next interception after Dobbs drops the ball was double coverage,
- 2:03Speaker 4: and then the last play.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I mean, that's the thing with Drake May. He thinks
- 2:06Speaker 2: he can do anything. He was second in MVP voting
- 2:08Speaker 2: last year. Maybe he thinks he's Patrick Mahomes, and he's not.
- 2:12Speaker 4: You're saying he's a little emboldened by the run they
- 2:14Speaker 4: went on.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Absolutely. You could see it last night. On the key
- 2:18Speaker 2: interception at the end of the game, he thought, I
- 2:20Speaker 2: can make a play. You know what? This might not
- 2:22Speaker 2: even be called, but I see a guy back there.
- 2:24Speaker 2: You see it now. He thought, I'm the MVP guy.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I have the huge arm. I will make this happen.
- 2:30Speaker 4: That play reminded me of Roethlisberger to Santonio Holmes back
- 2:33Speaker 4: at the end zone. And Roethlisberger put it where only
- 2:35Speaker 4: Holmes could catch it. You look at his stats there
- 2:37Speaker 4: last night. It's three horrible decisions. Not passes. The decision
- 2:41Speaker 4: and the pass. But that last play... You could take
- 2:43Speaker 4: a sack. You could throw it out of bounds. You
- 2:45Speaker 4: could burn a timeout. Anything but the pick.
- 2:47Speaker 2: So he obviously cannot solve the Seahawks' defense. The last
- 2:50Speaker 2: two games have been terrible, but it's really been the
- 2:52Speaker 2: last five games. I saw the stat today, Paul. In
- 2:55Speaker 2: the last five games, he has 11 turnovers, four fumbles lost,
- 2:59Speaker 2: 24 sacks taken. His numbers are down across the board.
- 3:02Speaker 2: He had a hard time in the playoffs. Remember the Chargers, Texans,
- 3:05Speaker 2: everyone took him down.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Okay, let's play concern level if you're a New England
- 3:09Speaker 4: Patriots fan. Drake May took you to a Super Bowl, or...
- 3:12Speaker 4: was part of a Super Bowl team. I don't know
- 3:14Speaker 4: how you want to say it. But what's your concern
- 3:16Speaker 4: level going forward?
- 3:17Speaker 2: A little concerned. He's got to get that impatience out
- 3:20Speaker 2: of his game. He needs to not throw that pass, obviously.
- 3:23Speaker 2: But to me, this is like I'm looking at some
- 3:26Speaker 2: other quarterbacks, Brock Purdy, Trevor Lawrence, C.J. Stroud, Jaden Daniels.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Guys can have big years, and everyone gets film on them.
- 3:33Speaker 2: So Drake Mays has got to grow up a little bit.
- 3:34Speaker 4: So is this about the defense figuring him out or
- 3:36Speaker 4: him thinking he can throw like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes?
- 3:40Speaker 2: The latter. He thinks he can do what Josh Allen
- 3:42Speaker 2: can do. And let's face it, Josh Allen's had some
- 3:44Speaker 2: ups and downs, too. Right. He can have all the
- 3:46Speaker 2: ability in the world. There's so much more to the position.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I think he'll get there, but there's a little concern here, Paul.
- 3:52Speaker 4: It sure would help if Dobbs would have caught that ball.
- 3:54Speaker 4: That would have taken, because that was the following play.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Look right there at the interception, which, no matter what,
- 3:58Speaker 4: is a bad decision.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Yeah, you guys were talking about it on the Dan
- 4:00Speaker 2: Patrick show. He saw the defender out of the corner
- 4:02Speaker 2: of his eye.
- 4:03Speaker 4: He did.
- 4:04Speaker 2: He absolutely did.
- 4:04Speaker 4: All right, let's get to the other thing in the game,
- 4:07Speaker 4: because if you're a Seahawks fan... You got the win,
- 4:10Speaker 4: the Sam Darnold injury, no news yet on his MRI.
- 4:13Speaker 4: At first it looked like it was lower, and then
- 4:15Speaker 4: it's like a hip area injury. Drew Locke comes in.
- 4:18Speaker 4: He's been in the league now six years, which we
- 4:20Speaker 4: were both surprised by.
- 4:20Speaker 2: I can't believe that.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Six years out of Missouri. How do you feel level
- 4:24Speaker 4: of confidence in Drew Locke as your backup?
- 4:26Speaker 2: So Sam Darnold went down and Twitter X started going
- 4:30Speaker 2: mad about it. Who are they going to bring in?
- 4:33Speaker 2: Andy Dalton from Philly.
- 4:34Speaker 4: You and I thought it was Jalen Milrow for a second.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah. So Drew Locke has been there a long time.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I thought he did a great job. He has a
- 4:41Speaker 2: lot of arm talent. He can sling it. Now, his
- 4:44Speaker 2: problems are more in his head. He gets really impatient
- 4:47Speaker 2: at times, and you saw that last night. I'm psyched
- 4:51Speaker 2: for him as a backup because he knows that team.
- 4:54Speaker 2: It's basically the same offense as last year, even though
- 4:56Speaker 2: Clint Kubiak is gone. I think he's the perfect backup
- 4:59Speaker 2: for this situation.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's a really good situation because you
- 5:02Speaker 4: look at that last couple of clips we just showed.
- 5:04Speaker 4: He had that out pattern to JSN. His arm looks great.
- 5:07Speaker 4: And then they let him go for it on fourth
- 5:08Speaker 4: and two, which became the touchdown to JSN. The play
- 5:11Speaker 4: by the goal line where he got a little confused,
- 5:14Speaker 4: is that on the OC or him when he's not
- 5:16Speaker 4: sure what the play is? He's checking his wristwatch or
- 5:19Speaker 4: whatever it is, and next thing you know, it's a
- 5:21Speaker 4: delay game.
- 5:22Speaker 2: It looked a lot like you when you had a
- 5:25Speaker 2: test in high school and you didn't study the night before.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I didn't have the art. You're practicing. Oh, be honest, Paul.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Did I have a cheat sheet? Is there a statute
- 5:31Speaker 4: of limitations at Marion Catholic?
- 5:33Speaker 2: I blame the coaching staff. First of all, you could
- 5:35Speaker 2: see in the fourth quarter, they were taking a long
- 5:37Speaker 2: time to get the play in because he was verbalizing
- 5:39Speaker 2: the play in the huddle on camera way too late.
- 5:42Speaker 2: And then he didn't even have the play. Just hike
- 5:44Speaker 2: and sneak the ball if you have to. Then why
- 5:47Speaker 2: didn't they call a timeout? Why didn't Seattle's coaching staff
- 5:49Speaker 2: call a timeout there? to save from the delay game.
- 5:52Speaker 2: They end up going for a field goal instead of
- 5:53Speaker 2: a touchdown. Almost lost the game because of that one play,
- 5:57Speaker 2: and I blame the coaching staff, not the quarterback.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Okay, we don't know what's up with Darnold. They make
- 6:00Speaker 4: it seem like it's not that big of a deal,
- 6:02Speaker 4: but not so fast. If it is a bigger deal
- 6:04Speaker 4: than we think it is, they have, if not the
- 6:06Speaker 4: best defense, top two in football. Could they pull off
- 6:09Speaker 4: a season, if they had to, like your Eagles when
- 6:12Speaker 4: they had Nick Foles?
- 6:13Speaker 2: Nick Foles only had to play three or four games
- 6:16Speaker 2: during the regular season in the playoffs. That's a long
- 6:18Speaker 2: time to go, Nick Foles.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Okay, but let's say, for instance, Sam Darnall is 80%.
- 6:22Speaker 4: You have the Cardinals next week. You have Washington.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Okay, well, that's fine. Drew Locke is perfect there. Then
- 6:28Speaker 2: down the road, though, you obviously have the Rams to
- 6:32Speaker 2: deal with at the end of the season. You have
- 6:34Speaker 2: the Eagles on there. You know what? I think Drew
- 6:37Speaker 2: Locke is fine. I think with that defense, you can
- 6:40Speaker 2: go at least to the midway point of the season
- 6:41Speaker 2: and still make the playoffs.
- 6:42Speaker 4: I may give Sam Darnall a bye week next week
- 6:44Speaker 4: against your Cardinals.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Oh, I don't expect to see Sam Darnold next week.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Put your feet up. Well, listen, it's still early. I
- 6:51Speaker 2: hope we see him next month because hips are bad.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Guy Bo Jackson, you know what can happen with your hip.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Don't go there. Don't go there. Keep it positive and
- 6:59Speaker 4: not so fast with Pabst and Perloff. All right, new
- 7:01Speaker 4: thing here. No one's ever done this in sports radio
- 7:03Speaker 4: or TV history. We're giving out helmet stickers for whoever
- 7:06Speaker 4: had the best game. If you could take a look
- 7:08Speaker 4: at these helmet stickers, they're gorgeous. It's me and you.
- 7:10Speaker 4: And what player wouldn't want this on their helmet? Who
- 7:12Speaker 4: are you picking for the helmet sticker for last night's game?
- 7:14Speaker 2: So it's like college football. It's like we're talking like Michigan,
- 7:17Speaker 2: Ohio State.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Right, like the Buckeye if you're an Ohio State guy.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Okay, well, I mean, it's pretty obvious then. Josh Jobe,
- 7:22Speaker 2: the cornerback who had the game-winning interception, former Eagle.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Look at that.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Oh, that's lovely. That would be a big honor. This
- 7:29Speaker 2: is an undrafted guy, a backup. I can't believe he
- 7:33Speaker 2: made that play, Paul. To get his both toes inside,
- 7:36Speaker 2: you know, that's like a JSN play. That's like a
- 7:39Speaker 2: Puka Nakua play.
- 7:40Speaker 4: He toe tapped it like a defensive back. He was
- 7:42Speaker 4: in by just a millimeter or so. I'm going to
- 7:44Speaker 4: say same play. Here's my helmet sticker. I'm going to
- 7:46Speaker 4: give it to Demarcus Lawrence. If you watch that play again,
- 7:49Speaker 4: the reason he was like off kilter, Drake May, Demarcus
- 7:52Speaker 4: Lawrence hopped a chop block and got right in his face.
- 7:55Speaker 4: So Demarcus Lawrence, you also get a helmet sticker.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Yeah, that Seahawks D line. We don't talk about it enough.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Look at this.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Right off the bat.
- 8:03Speaker 2: That's the thing with, you notice there, Seattle, they're only
- 8:05Speaker 2: rushing four guys so they can keep so many guys back.
- 8:07Speaker 2: That's what was giving Drake May such a hard time
- 8:10Speaker 2: last night. I like that. I think the guy who
- 8:12Speaker 2: got the pass really deserves a sticker more than the
- 8:15Speaker 2: pass rush.
- 8:15Speaker 4: Either way, I think they're both honored at the first
- 8:17Speaker 4: ever stickers, helmet stickers, in Not So Fast history. We'll
- 8:20Speaker 4: hear from them, I'm sure, soon. All right, let's get
- 8:22Speaker 4: to it. 49ers versus Rams in Australia tonight. We're done
- 8:25Speaker 4: talking about jet lag. Let's talk about the game itself.
- 8:28Speaker 4: How do you think this plays out?
- 8:29Speaker 2: Well, I think Kyle Shanahan has a lot of bulletin
- 8:32Speaker 2: board material. The entire NFL world's been talking about the
- 8:34Speaker 2: Rams for how many months right now?
- 8:36Speaker 4: Biggest favorite in history.
- 8:38Speaker 2: So Shanahan is basically saying, hey, last year we were
- 8:41Speaker 2: really close to this team and now everyone's forgotten about us.
- 8:43Speaker 2: So I think the 49ers are fired up. Now the
- 8:46Speaker 2: question is, do they get through four quarters with everybody intact?
- 8:50Speaker 4: Okay, now I look at this game, and like you said,
- 8:52Speaker 4: everyone is focused on the Rams. There's more coverage of
- 8:55Speaker 4: Aaron Donald not being there than 49ers being there. It
- 8:58Speaker 4: feels like a trap game, a classic trap where the
- 9:01Speaker 4: Rams lose when everyone thinks they're going to win.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Can you have a trap game in Australia, though? That
- 9:05Speaker 2: seems like you'd be fired up to play overseas.
- 9:07Speaker 4: It probably means something different. A trap game in Australia
- 9:09Speaker 4: probably means some type of meat-related product.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Well, I think the real issue is George Kittle's coming back,
- 9:15Speaker 2: and Nick Bosa are coming back. Now, they were injured.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Kittle was January 11th when he got hurt. Are they
- 9:21Speaker 2: going to be not only effective, but are they going
- 9:24Speaker 2: to stay healthy? I don't want to be in the
- 9:26Speaker 2: third quarter of this game, Paul, and the Niners have
- 9:28Speaker 2: already short-circuited their whole season because of injuries.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Should the Niners have pulled a Greg Popovich and left
- 9:33Speaker 4: those guys at home, Bosa and Kittle, because there's no
- 9:36Speaker 4: season if those two guys aren't present. Leave them at home,
- 9:39Speaker 4: not similar to Aaron Donald, but don't burn this trip.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Rest.
- 9:42Speaker 4: If we take the loss, we take the loss, but
- 9:44Speaker 4: I get you guys an extra 10 days home rest.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Well, yeah. I mean, honestly, I think they're okay without Kittle,
- 9:48Speaker 2: believe it or not. Kittle, he's getting older right now.
- 9:52Speaker 2: If Bosa gets hurt again, I don't think they can
- 9:54Speaker 2: even do as well as they did last year. And
- 9:57Speaker 2: McCaffrey led the league in touches. Is he going to
- 9:59Speaker 2: stay healthy? I mean, we've seen him get hurt before.
- 10:01Speaker 2: I'm really nervous about this team.
- 10:03Speaker 4: I don't think any team, and I think you said
- 10:04Speaker 4: this last week, no team is better at being injured
- 10:07Speaker 4: than the Niners.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Yeah, they're good. They have, obviously, a great coach. All right,
- 10:13Speaker 2: coming up next, not so fast. It's a year of defense,
- 10:16Speaker 2: at least in my opinion. Got off to a defensive
- 10:18Speaker 2: start last night, and we're going to see that all
- 10:20Speaker 2: season long. We'll break it down, not so fast.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Okay, Perloff, this is just for you and definitely not
- 10:27Speaker 4: for me. The midday pick-me-up. We do this little baseball.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Oh!
- 10:31Speaker 4: Shocker, Kyle Schwarber went long.
- 10:34Speaker 2: That's a grand slam.
- 10:35Speaker 4: That's a grand salami.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Yeah, how do you feel about that as a Cubs
- 10:38Speaker 2: fan watching Kyle Schwarber lead the league in homers?
- 10:40Speaker 4: It never doesn't hurt. It never doesn't hurt. The Cubs
- 10:43Speaker 4: years ago said, you know, we've seen Kyle Schwarber's best work.
- 10:46Speaker 4: He's got knee injuries. Let's let him go. 300 homers
- 10:49Speaker 4: later or whatever.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I don't think it matters who you root for. I
- 10:52Speaker 2: think Kyle Schwarber's the kind of player... who is goes
- 10:55Speaker 2: way beyond the team oh yeah everybody i know loves
- 10:58Speaker 2: him he's a softball player playing major league baseball.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Yeah he's one of those players that are entertaining back
- 11:02Speaker 4: in our day like a george brett or mike schmidt
- 11:04Speaker 4: you hated facing him but you respected what they did
- 11:07Speaker 4: for the game.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Yeah and also schwarber's a bit of an everyman like
- 11:09Speaker 2: he kind of looks like he would be at the
- 11:11Speaker 2: game in chicago not playing the game.
- 11:13Speaker 4: He looks like a 16 inch softball beer in one
- 11:16Speaker 4: hand throwing it underhand.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Yeah, he's great. Sorry he's a Philly and not a Cub.
- 11:21Speaker 4: I'm almost over it. Alright, it's time for Warm Takes.
- 11:23Speaker 4: You kids like it out there. It's sweeping the nation.
- 11:25Speaker 4: You can play at home. Here we go, Perloff. I'm
- 11:27Speaker 4: going to go first Warm Take of the day, and
- 11:29Speaker 4: it's NFL related. One of the great things about the NFL,
- 11:31Speaker 4: and I know this is kind of kept and obvious,
- 11:33Speaker 4: is that almost every team has hope. But if you
- 11:35Speaker 4: look at it, how many teams this year don't really
- 11:37Speaker 4: have hope? Maybe the Arizona Cardinals. But the Titans. Some
- 11:40Speaker 4: people like the Titans. The Cleveland Browns. You really have
- 11:43Speaker 4: to scratch and claw to find a team that has
- 11:45Speaker 4: no hope. And the teams that don't have hope are
- 11:47Speaker 4: tanking for the 2027 draft. But you look at the NBA.
- 11:50Speaker 4: How many teams can win the title?
- 11:52Speaker 2: Six?
- 11:52Speaker 1: Seven?
- 11:53Speaker 4: Possibly? The rest of the teams are just kind of
- 11:55Speaker 4: playing out the string and hoping for Wemba Nyama.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Baseball.
- 11:58Speaker 4: Ten teams can win the title, and that's maybe. Sometimes
- 12:01Speaker 4: it feels like Dodgers in the field. Football has everybody
- 12:04Speaker 4: in place, and the only thing that can really take
- 12:06Speaker 4: hope away from you is your quarterback getting injured in
- 12:08Speaker 4: game one. Now, the Seahawks look like they're going to
- 12:11Speaker 4: be fine. Sam Darnold will probably be okay. But if
- 12:13Speaker 4: you go back a couple years ago, Aaron Rodgers getting
- 12:15Speaker 4: hurt in the first game, it's like, oh, that's the
- 12:17Speaker 4: only thing I can take away from you. But football,
- 12:19Speaker 4: it feels like every team goes into the season with like,
- 12:22Speaker 4: we may not have Super Bowl aspirations, but wildcard weekend
- 12:25Speaker 4: aspirations feel pretty good as well.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Are you just saying this because the Seahawks and the
- 12:29Speaker 2: Patriots were in the Super Bowl last year and none
- 12:31Speaker 2: of us had that prediction?
- 12:32Speaker 4: Yeah, and that really doesn't happen in other sports. I
- 12:34Speaker 4: guess sometimes there's a wildcard in baseball. Arizona Diamondbacks, literally
- 12:38Speaker 4: a wildcard. But the NBA, it feels like, There's six
- 12:41Speaker 4: teams that could be there, and I may be stretching
- 12:43Speaker 4: it sometimes.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Yeah, although I think there are a few teams who
- 12:46Speaker 2: know they're not going to be in it. The Cardinals,
- 12:48Speaker 2: the Browns, the Raiders, Titans. You're right, there are people
- 12:51Speaker 2: who have Titans in the playoffs.
- 12:52Speaker 4: We may have to cap that at three or four teams,
- 12:54Speaker 4: and that's pretty good for the league.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Yeah, let's revisit this on Monday after some of those
- 12:58Speaker 2: teams play. All right, I've got to go back to
- 13:00Speaker 2: last night. You saw why NFL teams need to play
- 13:04Speaker 2: their starters in the preseason. It was quite obvious for
- 13:08Speaker 2: Seahawks and Patriots. You know, both quarterbacks sat out the
- 13:12Speaker 2: entire preseason. Unfortunately, Sam Darnold got hurt, so you don't
- 13:15Speaker 2: know what he was going to play like. But it
- 13:17Speaker 2: looked sloppy. There were so many penalties. There were so
- 13:20Speaker 2: many pre-snap penalties. It wasn't just the players. The coaches
- 13:23Speaker 2: looked like they were struggling figuring out what was going on.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Seahawks had a touchdown pulled back because of the legal shift.
- 13:29Speaker 2: That was all. what should have been taken care of
- 13:32Speaker 2: in the preseason and was not. Get ready, Paul. Week
- 13:35Speaker 2: one is going to be nothing but unders. Now, historically,
- 13:39Speaker 2: the unders carry week one. You can see it, especially
- 13:43Speaker 2: last night, with three preseason games. Teams are not ready
- 13:46Speaker 2: to go. We're going to see some really, really ugly football.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Might take to week four until we see what teams
- 13:51Speaker 2: really are.
- 13:51Speaker 4: You know, I agree with your thesis on this, that
- 13:54Speaker 4: setting up teams to play poorly is because of the
- 13:56Speaker 4: preseason games. And now there's three instead of four, like
- 13:58Speaker 4: a generation ago. But I'm going to not so fast
- 14:01Speaker 4: you here because I think coaches would rather lose in
- 14:03Speaker 4: week one and take the criticism for not playing certain
- 14:06Speaker 4: players than somehow play a starter longer than he should
- 14:09Speaker 4: in a preseason. And if that starter gets hurt, that's
- 14:11Speaker 4: where a coach gets lit up.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Well, I'm wondering from a health standpoint, though, Sam Darnold
- 14:15Speaker 2: got hurt five plays in, and A.J. Brown got hurt.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Does getting that preseason warm-up help you keep healthy for
- 14:20Speaker 2: week one? Let's get the scientists in on this.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Yeah, call your people at Dartmouth-Mass. How about this, though?
- 14:26Speaker 4: I think what you're saying, though, is bared out by
- 14:28Speaker 4: the Bengals. The Bengals, the past couple years, they've had
- 14:31Speaker 4: a lot of injury issues, especially Joe Burrow. And it
- 14:33Speaker 4: seems like this preseason, they let their starters play a
- 14:35Speaker 4: little more to be ready. whether it be physically ready
- 14:38Speaker 4: or football ready, but they're leaning towards your direction.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you get down to was last night's
- 14:43Speaker 2: game important too. I kind of think it was because
- 14:45Speaker 2: the Patriots are going to be in a wild card race,
- 14:47Speaker 2: and they got to play a backup quarterback. They might
- 14:50Speaker 2: look back at this and say, man, we should have
- 14:51Speaker 2: won that game in Seattle.
- 14:53Speaker 4: And vice versa. If Seattle somehow gets home field advantage
- 14:55Speaker 4: over the Rams by a half a game later in
- 14:57Speaker 4: the season, you're like, oh, that's the one they stole.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Yeah, if I'm a coach, I know the injury risk.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I still play my guys in August.
- 15:03Speaker 4: All right, my next warm take, let's go to my
- 15:05Speaker 4: warm take number two. It's about Australia. Never been there, Perloff.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Seems like somewhere you would go. You're a world traveler.
- 15:10Speaker 4: But the NFL pushing to Australia is pretty extreme. They've
- 15:13Speaker 4: tried Europe before, obviously many years, South America, Mexico, all
- 15:17Speaker 4: over the place. But sometimes I wonder what the long
- 15:20Speaker 4: game is for the NFL with overseas play. And I
- 15:23Speaker 4: don't think it's a Super Bowl overseas. I don't think
- 15:25Speaker 4: it's a team overseas. I think it's like a 50-year
- 15:28Speaker 4: plan where they're just going to chip away at a
- 15:31Speaker 4: new fan base. They've got the U.S. maxed out. If
- 15:34Speaker 4: you don't like football in America, there's nothing they can
- 15:36Speaker 4: do to change your mind. You're probably watching, I don't
- 15:39Speaker 4: know what, McNeil-Lehrer report on weekends. So I just think
- 15:43Speaker 4: that the NFL is playing the long game, and they'll
- 15:45Speaker 4: never go too deep with a Super Bowl in Wembley.
- 15:48Speaker 4: When I say never, I mean the next 10, 15 years.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Years ago, we thought there'd be a Super Bowl in London.
- 15:53Speaker 4: I don't think they want the blowback of that. I
- 15:55Speaker 4: think they want to chip away and develop fan bases
- 15:57Speaker 4: over a 25-year period, and then they're going to keep
- 15:59Speaker 4: doing it. I think with the 18-game schedule, it's going
- 16:02Speaker 4: to allow them to do it even more.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Yeah, Albert Breer was on the Dan Patrick Show from
- 16:05Speaker 2: Sports Illustrated, said that they're looking at Tokyo next, then Italy,
- 16:10Speaker 2: and the Middle East, possibly Abu Dhabi or somewhere like that.
- 16:14Speaker 2: How do we get in, Paul?
- 16:15Speaker 4: Yeah, so we want to put it out there now.
- 16:16Speaker 4: If NBC's Football Night in America is going to Rome,
- 16:20Speaker 4: We'll pay the airfare.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I want to go to Tokyo, too.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Mike Tirico, if you're watching, we'll help you out.
- 16:26Speaker 2: So tonight's game is important because if the teams struggle
- 16:30Speaker 2: or if somebody gets hurt, then they might not want
- 16:32Speaker 2: to go that far. But I can see, I totally agree,
- 16:35Speaker 2: they're laying groundwork. Did you know that the Olympics 2032
- 16:38Speaker 2: are in Australia? So they're also trying to sell flag
- 16:40Speaker 2: football over there. I heard that's a big initiative out
- 16:43Speaker 2: of the NFL.
- 16:43Speaker 4: I don't think I realize how big flag football is
- 16:45Speaker 4: as an initiative for the league. And it's becoming a
- 16:48Speaker 4: thing with the NCAAs. A little side topic here. A
- 16:50Speaker 4: girl from a local high school is getting a scholarship
- 16:53Speaker 4: to college for flag football, a partial scholarship to college.
- 16:55Speaker 4: This is that way to find another fan base by
- 16:58Speaker 4: the NFL. They don't leave any stone unturned.
- 17:00Speaker 2: By the way, did you know that Australia was hosting
- 17:02Speaker 2: the Olympics in 2032?
- 17:03Speaker 4: I did because I heard it two minutes ago by you.
- 17:05Speaker 2: All right, I'm up for my warm take. If you
- 17:09Speaker 2: don't like defense, this might not be the NFL season
- 17:12Speaker 2: for you. You saw it last night, obviously, a defensive battle,
- 17:15Speaker 2: but the best teams in the league are really focused
- 17:17Speaker 2: around their defense. I know the Rams have Matthew Stafford,
- 17:20Speaker 2: but when you've got Aaron Donald and Miles Garrett, you
- 17:22Speaker 2: are a defensive-oriented team. Philadelphia Eagles have those great players
- 17:26Speaker 2: up front. They're going to be about the defense. Obviously, Denver,
- 17:30Speaker 2: one of the top defenses. The Houston Texans could get
- 17:32Speaker 2: to the Super Bowl with no offense whatsoever. And the
- 17:35Speaker 2: defending champion, Seattle Seahawks, even with injuries, their defense was dominant. Now,
- 17:40Speaker 2: I go back to Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Fangio
- 17:44Speaker 2: or Fangio, Paul?
- 17:45Speaker 4: Fangio, I think.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I call him Fangio.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Italy.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Italy. He has a shell defense, which basically eliminates big plays.
- 17:51Speaker 2: So the result has been passing numbers going down, down, down.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Now I have some numbers here for you, Paul. In 2020,
- 17:57Speaker 2: 240 yards per game of passing. Last year, 209. Last night, 178.
- 18:02Speaker 2: I got to tell you right now, quarterbacks are not adjusting.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Offenses are not adjusting. One more factor, the kickoff rules.
- 18:11Speaker 2: You don't want to score too fast because then you're
- 18:13Speaker 2: giving the other team the ball, the 35 or the 40.
- 18:14Speaker 2: It's all about conservative play. Run-oriented offense. I think that's
- 18:20Speaker 2: going to be the story of the year. No big
- 18:23Speaker 2: passing yards at all. I love it.
- 18:24Speaker 4: You know, I've always loved the running game, and I
- 18:26Speaker 4: think it's interesting at defense. I think having a great
- 18:28Speaker 4: defense allows you to not necessarily find your quarterback. You
- 18:31Speaker 4: can find a good quarterback, not a great quarterback. Look
- 18:34Speaker 4: at the Seahawks. If you get B-level quarterback play, like
- 18:37Speaker 4: the Houston Texans, if they can get nice quarterback play
- 18:39Speaker 4: out of C.J. Stroud this year, they're going to be
- 18:41Speaker 4: just fine with that defense. The other thing, though, the
- 18:43Speaker 4: NFL does not like when scoring goes down.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I was about to say.
- 18:46Speaker 4: We'll save this for maybe later in the season or
- 18:48Speaker 4: for February with the competition committee, but if scoring goes
- 18:50Speaker 4: down noticeably this year, the NFL will react.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, they'll probably do it through officiating, call
- 18:55Speaker 2: more offensive pass, sorry, defensive pass interference. Did you notice
- 18:59Speaker 2: last night's side topic? They called offside on a tush push.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Seattle had a tush push, and it was completely made up.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Yes, I looked at it right down the line. Nobody
- 19:06Speaker 4: was offsides.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Yeah, they're basically saying we don't want the tush push.
- 19:09Speaker 2: It wasn't even the Philadelphia Eagles. It was the Seahawks.
- 19:12Speaker 2: But if the NFL wants to change something, they will
- 19:15Speaker 2: do it.
- 19:15Speaker 4: It does feel like the NFL can't outlaw the tush-push
- 19:18Speaker 4: because that's like an attack of one team's success, but
- 19:21Speaker 4: they'll just keep calling it and calling it and calling it.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Yeah, so we'll see. I know a lot of people
- 19:26Speaker 2: don't like this defense, but I think it is a
- 19:28Speaker 2: trend and it's not going away.
- 19:29Speaker 4: All right, we're time for a little game here. We
- 19:31Speaker 4: like to play this a couple times a week. It's
- 19:32Speaker 4: called Who Said It? You and I, I think, are
- 19:34Speaker 4: pitching an offer on this game. Who said it? Probably football-related.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Here we go, Perloff. Here's the first one. I'll give
- 19:39Speaker 4: it to you. You go first. He's like a mountain
- 19:42Speaker 4: lion in a zoo that's just like pacing. I saw
- 19:44Speaker 4: a mountain lion in a zoo and he was pacing
- 19:46Speaker 4: back and forth. And I was like, you don't want
- 19:48Speaker 4: to be that boy out to get I'm going to
- 19:50Speaker 4: get not going to be good that's what it reminds
- 19:53Speaker 4: me of okay I had to reread that.
- 19:54Speaker 2: One pacing I'm going to say this is Miles Garrett
- 19:57Speaker 2: talking about his new teammate Aaron Donald in practice like
- 20:00Speaker 2: you don't want to block this guy he's going.
- 20:02Speaker 4: To be really good I'm going to stay with the
- 20:04Speaker 4: Rams I think this is Matt Stafford talking about Miles
- 20:07Speaker 4: Garrett okay here we go let's take a look.
- 20:11Speaker 5: He's like a mountain lion that's in the zoo that's
- 20:14Speaker 5: just pacing. I saw a mountain lion at the Colorado Zoo.
- 20:18Speaker 5: He was just pacing back and forth. I was like,
- 20:19Speaker 5: y'all don't want that boy to get out. It's not
- 20:21Speaker 5: going to be good. But that's what Bo reminded me of.
- 20:24Speaker 4: It sure would have helped if we knew it was
- 20:26Speaker 4: Colorado Zoo. That would have narrowed the field down a
- 20:27Speaker 4: little bit. Nice job by our producers hiding that one
- 20:29Speaker 4: from us.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't see it. I like Bo Nix a lot,
- 20:32Speaker 2: but is he a mountain lion? Yeah. He seems more
- 20:36Speaker 2: of a pleasant animal. Maybe a sheep. Not a sheep, but...
- 20:40Speaker 2: Maybe a horse.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Shockingly, we got it wrong again. All right, let's go.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Round two. Who said it?
- 20:44Speaker 2: Football-related.
- 20:45Speaker 4: Here we go. Set it up on the screen. I've
- 20:48Speaker 4: never been a big chip guy. I'm more just I
- 20:51Speaker 4: don't dwell on the past too much. I see the
- 20:53Speaker 4: potential that we have. We've had that for a few
- 20:55Speaker 4: years now. Whatever's happened in the past is forgotten.
- 20:58Speaker 6: Oh, okay.
- 20:58Speaker 4: I got it. Chip on the shoulder?
- 21:00Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a team that's gotten close but come
- 21:02Speaker 2: up short. So it's either the Bills or the Ravens.
- 21:05Speaker 2: I'm going to go Lamar Jackson, Baltimore quarterback.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Okay, I'm going to go safety pick here. I'm going
- 21:09Speaker 4: to go Josh Allen. Here we go. Who said this?
- 21:13Speaker 6: I've never been like a big chip guy. I'm more just, man,
- 21:17Speaker 6: I don't dwell on the past too much. I see
- 21:20Speaker 6: the potential that we have, and we've had that for
- 21:23Speaker 6: a few years now. So whatever's happened in the past
- 21:28Speaker 6: is forgotten.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Yeah, we've got to get one of these.
- 21:31Speaker 4: We're not good at this game.
- 21:32Speaker 2: No, we're already at the NFL season. Do you think
- 21:35Speaker 2: we'll get our first one week five, week six?
- 21:36Speaker 4: I thought you're supposed to have a chip on your shoulder.
- 21:38Speaker 4: You're supposed to be motivated by something. He's got a
- 21:40Speaker 4: high motor, and then next thing is obvious, you have
- 21:42Speaker 4: a chip on your shoulder.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it could be a bone deposit, though,
- 21:45Speaker 2: and you might need surgery for a chip on your shoulder.
- 21:47Speaker 4: You don't want to scare the Lions fans with that.
- 21:49Speaker 4: All right, coming up next, we're going to do on
- 21:50Speaker 4: the table some more NFL questions and maybe a little
- 21:53Speaker 4: bit about Otani and his situation. Stick around. Not so fast.
- 21:56Speaker 4: Come back in a minute.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Welcome back. Not so fast. Okay, we got Shohei Otani.
- 22:01Speaker 2: He goes on the 15-day IL for the Dodgers. This
- 22:05Speaker 2: is not good, Paul, if you're a Dodgers fan, although
- 22:08Speaker 2: we've seen him play injured before. What do you make
- 22:11Speaker 2: of the new designation?
- 22:12Speaker 4: Now, a couple things here. When did it go from
- 22:15Speaker 4: IR to IL? Because, you know, DL is the disabled list,
- 22:21Speaker 4: injured reserve. I still have come to grips with that.
- 22:25Speaker 4: I'm told it's 2019. Why change that?
- 22:28Speaker 2: I don't know. Is that really a big deal?
- 22:30Speaker 4: Okay, here's the other thing that should be concerning. If
- 22:31Speaker 4: I'm a fan of the Dodgers, they say he's got
- 22:33Speaker 4: arm issues. Is that the elbow?
- 22:35Speaker 2: Is that the shoulder?
- 22:36Speaker 4: Can we be a little more specific here? Because... You
- 22:38Speaker 4: don't necessarily need him as a pitcher. You were talking
- 22:40Speaker 4: about the rotation there, and they're going to be just fine.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Dodgers are stacked. Now that everyone's coming back, they do
- 22:45Speaker 2: not need him as a starter, a specialist.
- 22:47Speaker 4: So they're managing him as a hitter for the postseason,
- 22:49Speaker 4: I would think, less than a pitcher.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the first time we've really talked Otani
- 22:52Speaker 2: on Not So Fast. Paul, I am a believer that
- 22:55Speaker 2: they should never pitch him. I think he should be
- 22:58Speaker 2: a hitter for the rest of his career like Babe
- 23:00Speaker 2: Ruth because the pitching is going to wear down what
- 23:03Speaker 2: I would say is the best hitter of our generation
- 23:05Speaker 2: by far.
- 23:06Speaker 4: I think this is such a quandary because a couple
- 23:08Speaker 4: years ago when he had the elbow procedure, which was
- 23:10Speaker 4: not a Tommy John, they said it wasn't a Tommy John.
- 23:12Speaker 4: They got him back to hit, and he went 50-50,
- 23:14Speaker 4: 50-plus steals and hits. He was the best hitter in
- 23:18Speaker 4: the baseball and one of the best seasons of all
- 23:20Speaker 4: time a hitter's ever had. And then they bring him
- 23:22Speaker 4: back as a pitcher, and now he's a good hitter.
- 23:25Speaker 4: He's not having an Otani-ish season at the plate.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Wow, he's hurt. He's clearly not himself. When he's healthy,
- 23:30Speaker 2: maybe Aaron Judge is better, but he's right there as
- 23:32Speaker 2: the top hitter.
- 23:33Speaker 4: We may never know this from Dave Roberts or if
- 23:35Speaker 4: the people do the contracts with the Dodgers, but do
- 23:37Speaker 4: you think it's in his contract, Otani, that he pitches
- 23:39Speaker 4: for the Dodgers?
- 23:40Speaker 2: That he has a choice, you're saying?
- 23:41Speaker 4: Yes, that his decision to be a pitcher.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Oh, man, that would be tough. If you're an organization,
- 23:46Speaker 2: I guess they didn't really have any leverage because they
- 23:48Speaker 2: wanted him so badly. But you've got to control what
- 23:50Speaker 2: position the guy plays. Can you actually put that in
- 23:52Speaker 2: a contract?
- 23:53Speaker 4: Somehow I think the Dodgers are going to be just
- 23:55Speaker 4: fine because they have four aces ready to go, even
- 23:57Speaker 4: if he's not ready. We'll keep an eye on that story.
- 23:59Speaker 4: Let's get back to football, Perloff. Let's play a game
- 24:01Speaker 4: we like to call On the Table. On the Table
- 24:03Speaker 4: or Off the Table. I'll give you the concept. Ooh,
- 24:05Speaker 4: new graphics.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Whoa.
- 24:07Speaker 4: Broke the budget for those graphics. All right, let's go
- 24:09Speaker 4: On the Table.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Okay.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Here we go. Let's say this one. This is a
- 24:12Speaker 4: little forward thinking of us. Is this Joe Burrow's final
- 24:16Speaker 4: year with the Bengals? Assuming it doesn't go well.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Well, obviously, right. It doesn't go well. There is logic there.
- 24:22Speaker 2: They've put all their chips into this season. They got
- 24:26Speaker 2: Dexter Lawrence from the Giants, one of the best defensive
- 24:28Speaker 2: tackles in the game. But I don't think so. I
- 24:30Speaker 2: actually heard a good point from a Cincinnati reporter. Joe
- 24:33Speaker 2: Burrow has never mentioned leaving. We've talked a lot about it.
- 24:36Speaker 2: We have. We have. Joe Burrow, we have no idea
- 24:40Speaker 2: what he's thinking about Cincinnati. We just look at history.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Carson Palmer wanted his way out of Cincinnati after about
- 24:46Speaker 2: eight or nine years. So we were thinking Burrow might
- 24:49Speaker 2: want the same. Now, the organization's done exactly what he wanted.
- 24:53Speaker 2: They re-signed T. Higgins. Obviously, you have Chase. I'm not
- 24:57Speaker 2: sure he's quite as unhappy there as we think he is.
- 25:00Speaker 4: Yeah, he just seems to be a little more candid
- 25:02Speaker 4: in press conference, and he kind of wears his emotions
- 25:04Speaker 4: on his sleeve sometimes after those big losses. But I
- 25:07Speaker 4: go back to the T. Higgins thing. They spent money
- 25:09Speaker 4: on a good wide receiver and got him a lot
- 25:12Speaker 4: of missed playoffs there. But the Dexter Lawrence addition shows
- 25:16Speaker 4: their commitment financially. All the different financial commitments show him
- 25:19Speaker 4: that they're in. This doesn't feel like the Bengals of
- 25:21Speaker 4: 15 years ago.
- 25:22Speaker 2: No, banality doesn't necessarily loan itself to being a malcontent.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Like a real malcontent, like a wide receiver who's trying
- 25:28Speaker 2: to get his way out of town.
- 25:29Speaker 4: Okay, next one on the table for you, Perloff. Brock
- 25:32Speaker 4: Bauer is a great tight end for the Raiders. A
- 25:33Speaker 4: little nicked up, got a little cut on the meniscus
- 25:36Speaker 4: the other day like he's going to super cuts. Will
- 25:39Speaker 4: the Raiders have a winning record?
- 25:41Speaker 2: That is absolutely not on the table. Guaranteed it? Oh,
- 25:44Speaker 2: my God. Yeah, I will guarantee it. It's not on
- 25:46Speaker 2: this table. I don't see it anywhere here. How are
- 25:48Speaker 2: the Raiders going to have a winning record?
- 25:50Speaker 4: It does seem more than unlikely.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Yes, so they have no receivers. They have Kirk Cousins
- 25:55Speaker 2: in his late 30s starting. I don't think the average
- 25:59Speaker 2: fan can name three or four guys on defense. I
- 26:01Speaker 2: know Max Crosby is there, but for how long? DP
- 26:04Speaker 2: threw out that maybe he's a cowboy by the end
- 26:06Speaker 2: of the season. In that division, to me, that's not
- 26:10Speaker 2: on the table at all. I like what they're building,
- 26:12Speaker 2: but it's not about this year.
- 26:14Speaker 4: You have to find one winnable game on that list,
- 26:16Speaker 4: and it's the Jets, and the Jets by that time
- 26:18Speaker 4: could be decent.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Well, they got the Dolphins, too.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Yeah, you're Dolphins.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Another tanking team. Actually, you know what? And look at
- 26:25Speaker 2: that schedule. Just maybe. It is a last-place schedule. Titans? Yeah,
- 26:29Speaker 2: but to me, the Bowers injury was everything. I cannot
- 26:32Speaker 2: believe their ultimate weapon. Probably the best tight end in
- 26:36Speaker 2: the game. One or two games, but is he 100%
- 26:38Speaker 2: when he gets back? I mean, they do have other
- 26:40Speaker 2: tight ends, so it's not the worst position to have
- 26:42Speaker 2: an injury, but he is their whole offense.
- 26:44Speaker 4: All right, let's keep skewering negative. We like to do
- 26:46Speaker 4: that on Not So Fast. All right, Perloff.
- 26:48Speaker 2: J.J.
- 26:48Speaker 4: McCarthy is now third string for the Vikings, not second string.
- 26:51Speaker 4: You do that because you don't want to see him
- 26:53Speaker 4: on the field. When you put him at third string,
- 26:55Speaker 4: that's like he's basically inactive for the game unless there's
- 26:58Speaker 4: double injuries. What does that say about his future?
- 27:00Speaker 2: It is not long in Minnesota. You know, it's funny.
- 27:05Speaker 2: I rooted for J.J. McCarthy. I love Kevin O'Connell, the
- 27:07Speaker 2: coach there. You could see that marriage was not working
- 27:10Speaker 2: at all. I bet you they shopped him for a
- 27:12Speaker 2: sixth or seventh round pick this offseason. After the season
- 27:15Speaker 2: is over, unless he comes in and really does something,
- 27:18Speaker 2: I think they find a way to part ways. Even
- 27:20Speaker 2: though they'll have him under contract at his rookie deal
- 27:22Speaker 2: for a little bit longer, you can tell just in preseason,
- 27:26Speaker 2: you saw that fastball he just threw there in the highlight.
- 27:28Speaker 2: He is not the right guy for that system. I
- 27:30Speaker 2: don't know why they didn't figure it out before.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Yeah, it does feel like his career is elsewhere. And financially,
- 27:35Speaker 4: they can keep him on the roster for as long
- 27:36Speaker 4: as they want until they get some type of offer.
- 27:38Speaker 4: I wonder if they're hoping that, not hoping, but looking
- 27:40Speaker 4: for an opportunity where another team has a series of
- 27:43Speaker 4: injuries at the quarterback position and has to find some depth.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know how I feel about Carson Wentz,
- 27:48Speaker 2: the backup. I still think Carson Wentz is a good
- 27:50Speaker 2: enough quarterback to win some games in the NFL. I
- 27:52Speaker 2: am a little worried about Kyler Murray. Can he stay healthy?
- 27:55Speaker 2: So we'll see if the backups in Minnesota get some play.
- 27:57Speaker 4: All right, this is very mean-spirited by our production team here.
- 27:59Speaker 4: Here's the next one for On the Table. Tua plays
- 28:02Speaker 4: past week one with the Falcons. Wow, geez, that's Oh, boy.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Obviously, is this referring to Mike Tomlin?
- 28:10Speaker 4: We're going to get to that. But generally, do you
- 28:12Speaker 4: think Tua will earn another week or stay healthy for
- 28:15Speaker 4: another week?
- 28:16Speaker 2: So I think it's on the table that they pull
- 28:20Speaker 2: him after one week and they go to Michael Penix.
- 28:23Speaker 2: That being said.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Health related.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Health related. No, I mean for Penix. Right, right. That
- 28:28Speaker 2: being said, Penix, four days before the season says I'm
- 28:31Speaker 2: not 100%. Can you get 100% in 10 days?
- 28:34Speaker 4: I never had 100% in school. This is your thing.
- 28:36Speaker 4: So tell me, how can you do that?
- 28:37Speaker 2: I think Atlanta wants to see more of Tua. And
- 28:40Speaker 2: it's not about Tua. Tua will be somewhere between okay
- 28:43Speaker 2: and bad.
- 28:44Speaker 4: So stopgap quarterback?
- 28:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I just think they're not ready to go with Penix.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Because if they were, they would have pushed him out
- 28:50Speaker 2: there week one. I think you need a month to
- 28:52Speaker 2: get Penix where he wants to be.
- 28:53Speaker 4: All right, you referenced Mike Tomlin, who made his debut
- 28:55Speaker 4: on NBC Sports yesterday. And Tomlin... was asked about Aaron Rodgers,
- 28:59Speaker 4: who faces Tua in week one. And here's what Mike
- 29:02Speaker 4: Tomlin had to say about Tua. Not so good.
- 29:04Speaker 1: You know, it's less about Aaron for me, and it's
- 29:06Speaker 1: more about the quarterback on the other side. His last
- 29:09Speaker 1: visit to Pittsburgh didn't go well. I was in the
- 29:11Speaker 1: stadium that day.
- 29:13Speaker 2: They lost.
- 29:13Speaker 1: He got benched. And so I think it's going to
- 29:15Speaker 1: be a good day for Mike McCarthy, Patrick Graham, and
- 29:18Speaker 1: the Pittsburgh Steelers and company. I'm going to pull a Devin.
- 29:21Speaker 4: Mike, I have something to do with that.
- 29:22Speaker 5: I've got a little.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Something to say here.
- 29:24Speaker 1: I'm going to pull a Devin.
- 29:24Speaker 2: I'm going to go with the Steelers.
- 29:26Speaker 4: Coach Tomlin said it with a smile on his face.
- 29:28Speaker 4: That was an assault.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, but it is a little bit of
- 29:31Speaker 2: Steelers hyperbole, though. He still has black and gold in
- 29:34Speaker 2: his blood.
- 29:35Speaker 4: He just said that quarterback for Atlanta, he got pulled
- 29:37Speaker 4: last time I saw him.
- 29:38Speaker 2: That's horrible. Okay, I'm going to defend Tua. Tua was
- 29:42Speaker 2: a good quarterback at one point. Everyone seems to forget
- 29:44Speaker 2: that part.
- 29:44Speaker 4: Yeah, he had that one year, I think it was 2023,
- 29:46Speaker 4: where it looked like he recovered his career, the injuries
- 29:49Speaker 4: had gone away, and he was just dialing. They had Waddell,
- 29:51Speaker 4: they had Hill, they had McDaniel. Everything was going well.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Fired coaches have to say the team they last were
- 29:58Speaker 2: on is going to be really good. The Bills coach,
- 30:01Speaker 2: Sean McDermott, former Bills coach, said the Bills are going
- 30:03Speaker 2: to finally win the Super Bowl with him out of
- 30:05Speaker 2: the building. Now, I don't think he really wants that
- 30:07Speaker 2: to happen necessarily, but Tomlin, I think, was thinking he's
- 30:10Speaker 2: a Steelers guy there. That being said, no one's excited
- 30:13Speaker 2: for Tua.
- 30:13Speaker 4: All right, that is a little on the table. We'll
- 30:15Speaker 4: do some more football coming up. But this is called
- 30:17Speaker 4: the rando, some random topic that drops in our lap.
- 30:19Speaker 4: The other guy doesn't know it's coming. I was in
- 30:21Speaker 4: Chicago the other day, and a buddy of mine is
- 30:22Speaker 4: redoing this, like, man cave, rec room downstairs, and he's
- 30:25Speaker 4: building a bathroom from scratch. He goes, you know what
- 30:28Speaker 4: I'm doing, Paul? He goes, I'm going to put a
- 30:29Speaker 4: urinal in here, like the stand-up urinals that you'd see
- 30:32Speaker 4: at a bar back in the day. Is this approved,
- 30:34Speaker 4: not approved by Not So Fast?
- 30:36Speaker 2: I am a strong approval. In fact, that's one of
- 30:39Speaker 2: my dreams, to have a urinal in your bathroom. Right.
- 30:43Speaker 2: It's so much less work.
- 30:44Speaker 4: Yeah, you could go in and out and probably not
- 30:46Speaker 4: even miss an entire commercial break.
- 30:47Speaker 2: And you don't leave the seat up or down. Your
- 30:50Speaker 2: wife's not going to care.
- 30:51Speaker 4: Very man-friendly. Now, you have to run that past the wife,
- 30:53Speaker 4: I'm assuming, at some juncture in the building process.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I'm not sure she would like it. Now,
- 30:59Speaker 2: can you also have wings and everything else that goes
- 31:01Speaker 2: with a sports bar in your house?
- 31:02Speaker 4: You could have a drop basket of wings. That'd be fantastic.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I would love it. Are you pro or con?
- 31:08Speaker 4: You know, I worry sometimes about sanitation, you know, like
- 31:11Speaker 4: how sanitary it is. You know, me as a Cubs fan,
- 31:13Speaker 4: I'd rather have a trough, a full trough so the
- 31:15Speaker 4: bros can get into it. But yeah, I would love
- 31:17Speaker 4: a urinal.
- 31:17Speaker 2: At the house. Okay. So we're approving not so fast
- 31:21Speaker 2: as Urinals in the house are acceptable. All right, coming up,
- 31:25Speaker 2: we have a new segment called Superloftives. We're going to
- 31:29Speaker 2: look at some big statements for the NFL season, including
- 31:33Speaker 2: the one-off season move that we forgot to talk about.
- 31:35Speaker 2: We'll get into that next. Not so fast.
- 31:42Speaker 7: What's it like when the backup quarterback comes in and
- 31:46Speaker 7: how your job may change, like Seattle's offensive line last night?
- 31:51Speaker 8: Well, playing for 20 quarterbacks during my NFL career, I'm
- 31:54Speaker 8: not sure I know what it's like when the starting quarterback.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Is in there.
- 31:58Speaker 8: But let me put my hat on here as an
- 32:01Speaker 8: analyst and just think about it. It makes you very concerned, right?
- 32:05Speaker 8: Because as a tackle, now I'm not exactly sure where
- 32:08Speaker 8: that quarterback is going to be. I know where he's
- 32:10Speaker 8: supposed to be, but every quarterback, because of height and
- 32:13Speaker 8: different body measurements, is going to end up at a
- 32:15Speaker 8: different spot in their drop. And some guys, especially if
- 32:18Speaker 8: they're shorter... They like to be a little bit deeper.
- 32:20Speaker 8: They like to scramble. They like to step up maybe
- 32:22Speaker 8: a little bit more. And so having reps with a
- 32:24Speaker 8: backup is really important so that I have an understanding
- 32:27Speaker 8: of where he's going to be on any given pass
- 32:29Speaker 8: protection because I don't have eyes in the back of
- 32:31Speaker 8: my head.
- 32:33Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Paps and Furlough, NBC Sports Now.
- 32:36Speaker 4: That was unintentionally my favorite moment of the day. Dan
- 32:39Speaker 4: asking Joe Thomas just casually about playing with a backup quarterback.
- 32:42Speaker 4: And Joe Thomas saying... Most of the time I did
- 32:43Speaker 4: play with backup quarterbacks.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I wonder if you can name all of them.
- 32:46Speaker 2: By the way, Joe Thomas is the man. Can we
- 32:48Speaker 2: just state that right now? His post-playing career, he's at
- 32:52Speaker 2: Hall of Fame Farms. He looks like a farmer, but
- 32:54Speaker 2: he's so cool.
- 32:55Speaker 4: Yeah, he's dropped like 50 pounds. He's completely jacked.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he is right. He did not have
- 33:00Speaker 2: steady quarterback play.
- 33:00Speaker 4: Okay, I got a list of backup quarterbacks. It feels
- 33:02Speaker 4: like Seattle's in pretty good shape as backup quarterbacks. I
- 33:05Speaker 4: have some other high-end backup situations. My backup quarterback rankings
- 33:09Speaker 4: list drops tomorrow. I'm going to tease this a little bit.
- 33:11Speaker 4: Tyson Bajan with the Bears. He's kind of a hot property.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Oh, and Case Keenan behind him, my guy.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Well, you know what's funny? That's a great third-string quarterback.
- 33:19Speaker 4: I hope he never plays. Joe Flacco with the Bengals.
- 33:22Speaker 4: Tyrod Taylor with the Packers. That's a nice guy to have.
- 33:25Speaker 4: Davis Mills with the Texans.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Oh, you know what? Too threatening? I don't even know
- 33:30Speaker 2: if he's threatening enough because Texas can win the Super Bowl.
- 33:33Speaker 2: We've seen Davis Mills high end. I know there are
- 33:35Speaker 2: Davis Mills-ites out there. I'm not one of them.
- 33:37Speaker 4: I am one of them lightly. Justin Fields with the Chiefs.
- 33:40Speaker 4: I don't want to see him play because that means
- 33:42Speaker 4: something happened, but I kind of want to see him play.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Well, apparently Andy Reid doesn't want to see him play
- 33:46Speaker 2: because he's going to Holmes.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Rams have Stetson Bennett, unproven, but a veteran.
- 33:50Speaker 2: And Ty Simpson.
- 33:51Speaker 4: Ty Simpson, who I think they have third string, so
- 33:54Speaker 4: he doesn't play week one with a little ankle spur.
- 33:57Speaker 4: The Vikings have Carson Wentz, your boy. And the 49ers
- 34:00Speaker 4: have Mac Jones, who might be the highest of high second-stringers.
- 34:03Speaker 2: He's probably the 33rd best quarterback in the NFL.
- 34:06Speaker 4: Well, there's some teams that would probably take Mac Jones.
- 34:08Speaker 4: If he didn't have a two-year contract with the Niners,
- 34:10Speaker 4: I think people would have made plays for Mac Jones.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Yeah, he's another resuscitation project for Kyle Shanahan. Now, I
- 34:16Speaker 2: know my backups, but that being said, you really don't
- 34:19Speaker 2: want a quarterback injury early in the season. You've got
- 34:21Speaker 2: to have a guy who can fill in late. But
- 34:23Speaker 2: the plan is never, like, you don't want to see
- 34:25Speaker 2: Tyson Badgen in Chicago playing. in week two.
- 34:27Speaker 4: No, but you also want to look at being prepared.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Like the Chiefs last year, you didn't know Mahomes was
- 34:31Speaker 4: going to be down, but they didn't have a situation
- 34:33Speaker 4: in place because they had a couple backups hurt. All right,
- 34:35Speaker 4: let's get to the next thing. We talked about Drake
- 34:37Speaker 4: Bay yesterday. Not a good game. Three picks in the
- 34:39Speaker 4: fourth quarter. Getting back to the game, here's what he
- 34:41Speaker 4: had to say about his performance.
- 34:44Speaker 7: Yeah, lost patience and cost of this. I think just
- 34:49Speaker 7: decisions that cost us the game on my part and
- 34:52Speaker 7: my end. I've asked myself to to be better and
- 34:56Speaker 7: realize it's, you know, it's a long season, but at
- 34:57Speaker 7: the same time, you can't have those, you can't have those.
- 34:59Speaker 7: And it's unacceptable. And I know that, uh, you're getting
- 35:02Speaker 7: back to work because, you know, that wasn't, you know,
- 35:05Speaker 7: how I play football and how I want to represent, um,
- 35:08Speaker 7: you know, my game and, and, you know, playing quarterback
- 35:10Speaker 7: for Patriots.
- 35:11Speaker 2: You can actually see, Paul, Drake may lose his patience
- 35:13Speaker 2: in real time. He started taking these shots downfield. He
- 35:16Speaker 2: definitely did not need to do it. But he's a
- 35:18Speaker 2: big guy. He's a confident guy. Maybe he was just bored.
- 35:21Speaker 2: The underneath stuff, he was incredible. The underneath stuff, he
- 35:25Speaker 2: hit every pass. But he was 0 for 4 on
- 35:28Speaker 2: passes over 20 yards with bad, bad results. I think
- 35:31Speaker 2: he wanted to prove something last night. He thinks he's
- 35:33Speaker 2: an elite quarterback. and he spoke about it right there.
- 35:37Speaker 2: He got impatient.
- 35:38Speaker 4: Yes, I think he got impatient. He got frustrated. I
- 35:40Speaker 4: think after the Dobbs drop, he tried to force the
- 35:43Speaker 4: next one in, and he threw a laser, but he
- 35:46Speaker 4: threw it about 5 feet too high, and he got
- 35:47Speaker 4: picked off.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, now you get to the Patriots' schedule
- 35:50Speaker 2: from last year. Is he great against bad teams, and
- 35:54Speaker 2: can he play against the good teams? There's a lot
- 35:56Speaker 2: to be determined there. It's weird.
- 35:57Speaker 4: He does not feel like a guy who just played
- 35:59Speaker 4: in the Super Bowl.
- 36:00Speaker 2: All right, let's go to the other side, Seattle. JSN,
- 36:04Speaker 2: amazing again last night. Offensive player of the year from
- 36:07Speaker 2: last year. We'll see if he can do it with
- 36:09Speaker 2: a backup quarterback. He talked about losing Sam Darnold.
- 36:13Speaker 3: It's tough losing 14. I mean, he's the head of
- 36:16Speaker 3: the snake. But we have each other's backs, like I said.
- 36:19Speaker 3: You know, we fully trust in Drew Locke to come
- 36:22Speaker 3: in and do his thing. Done it time and time again.
- 36:25Speaker 3: So we just have to have each other's back, like
- 36:28Speaker 3: I'm saying, and play. And like I said, I'm just
- 36:32Speaker 3: super proud of everybody.
- 36:34Speaker 4: That's a veteran maneuver there by JSN. You completely compliment
- 36:37Speaker 4: Sam Darnold and then pivot and completely compliment Drew Locke.
- 36:40Speaker 4: Because you have to think, I may be playing with
- 36:43Speaker 4: one of these guys next week. I don't know what.
- 36:45Speaker 4: You've got to be completely complimentary of both guys.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. He's a veteran. He knows what he's doing.
- 36:50Speaker 2: But if you told me when Sam Darnold got hurt
- 36:52Speaker 2: that JSN was going to go for 122 yards, that
- 36:54Speaker 2: was an unbelievable performance. He saved Drew Locke.
- 36:58Speaker 4: Well, I think that's smart by Drew Locke. Target JSN
- 37:01Speaker 4: and good things will happen. You're not going to throw interceptions.
- 37:04Speaker 4: That guy is almost always open or he's going to
- 37:05Speaker 4: make a play for the ball. And you know it's
- 37:07Speaker 4: a bit funny if JSN got up there and said, hey, man,
- 37:09Speaker 4: as long as I'm healthy, we're going to be just
- 37:11Speaker 4: fine because that's what everyone really thinks.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe, maybe. I don't know if that's true because
- 37:15Speaker 2: I would double-team JSN. But then Cooper Cupp is out
- 37:17Speaker 2: there making one-handed catches. Wait, by the way, this is
- 37:21Speaker 2: a side topic here. What did you think of their rookie,
- 37:22Speaker 2: Jadarian Price, for Seattle?
- 37:24Speaker 4: You know, I like Jadarian Price. I had the over.
- 37:26Speaker 4: He had 52 yards. I had 51 and a half.
- 37:29Speaker 2: Oh, there you go.
- 37:30Speaker 4: Just got that in. I think Jadarian Price, Chris Collinsworth
- 37:32Speaker 4: mentioned Jadarian Price in the preseason, in the pregame and said,
- 37:36Speaker 4: He didn't get any run in the preseason, so they
- 37:38Speaker 4: may work him in lightly. But he averaged six yards
- 37:40Speaker 4: a carry in college. He felt like he was on
- 37:42Speaker 4: the cusp of breaking one last night. Again, we predicted
- 37:45Speaker 4: him to be Rookie of the Year. When I say we,
- 37:46Speaker 4: I mean me.
- 37:47Speaker 2: All right. So we had a game last night and
- 37:49Speaker 2: we have a second game tonight. I think we could
- 37:51Speaker 2: still do season preview stuff, Paul. Are we allowed?
- 37:53Speaker 4: Is it time for Superloftives?
- 37:55Speaker 2: I think it's time for Superloftives. Let's go. It's catching
- 38:00Speaker 2: fire around the nation here.
- 38:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I think a lot of people, like a lot
- 38:03Speaker 4: of players, want to get a Superloftives. I could feel
- 38:05Speaker 4: them calling for it.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I haven't gotten those calls yet. I must have
- 38:08Speaker 2: been busy. All right, first Superloftive. Who is the first
- 38:12Speaker 2: quarterback to get the hook this season? Now, earlier in
- 38:16Speaker 2: the show, we were talking about Tua at Atlanta. I
- 38:18Speaker 2: don't think it's him. I think it's in Cleveland. I
- 38:21Speaker 2: think Deshaun Watson has a real chance of getting pulled
- 38:25Speaker 2: after two weeks, Paul. Look at the schedule. At Jacksonville,
- 38:29Speaker 2: at the Bucs. Now, if Cleveland goes 0-2 and loses
- 38:32Speaker 2: both those games and Watson plays poorly, like he did
- 38:34Speaker 2: in the preseason, like he did the last time we
- 38:37Speaker 2: saw him on the field, then I think you try
- 38:39Speaker 2: Shador in Week 3, which is a home game against
- 38:42Speaker 2: the Panthers. Here's the thing. Week 4, Thursday night game
- 38:46Speaker 2: against the Steelers. So if it's a Thursday night game,
- 38:49Speaker 2: you can't immediately put Shador in after three days of rest.
- 38:53Speaker 2: I think they really look at week two. I think
- 38:54Speaker 2: Deshaun's in trouble because I don't expect the Browns to
- 38:57Speaker 2: do well in these games.
- 38:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm with you on this one. I think it's
- 38:59Speaker 4: going to be a short leash on this one. The
- 39:01Speaker 4: superlative is the only thing he's going to win this year.
- 39:03Speaker 4: I think he starts the month of September, goes 0-4,
- 39:06Speaker 4: and the experiment is over.
- 39:07Speaker 2: I like it. I mean, he's got a lot of money,
- 39:09Speaker 2: so he'll be okay. All right, my second superlative, the
- 39:13Speaker 2: player that you and I and the rest of NFL
- 39:16Speaker 2: Nation forgot to talk about enough this offseason, that is
- 39:19Speaker 2: Trey Hendrickson in Baltimore. Now, you're seeing the Ravens as
- 39:23Speaker 2: a popular Super Bowl pick. It's got to be better
- 39:26Speaker 2: on defense, and Trey Hendrickson was sort of the consolation. prize.
- 39:30Speaker 2: They traded for Max Crosby. That guy called off for
- 39:33Speaker 2: medical reason. Hendrickson comes over. I think he is a
- 39:36Speaker 2: great pass rusher. On a really bad Cincinnati defense, he
- 39:39Speaker 2: always stood out to me. I think he's going to
- 39:41Speaker 2: make a lot of noise in Baltimore. And if you
- 39:43Speaker 2: pick the Ravens for the Super Bowl, it's got to
- 39:45Speaker 2: be in part because of Trey Hendrickson. But, Paul, you
- 39:48Speaker 2: and I have not done a lot of Trey Hendrickson.
- 39:49Speaker 4: No, we haven't chopped him up yet. It's more about
- 39:52Speaker 4: us than him. He had back-to-back seasons of 17.5 sacks
- 39:55Speaker 4: a couple years ago. He's perpetually underrated by playing. It's
- 39:59Speaker 4: weird because he was the only defender you knew. Remember
- 40:02Speaker 4: Geno Atkins years ago?
- 40:03Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 40:04Speaker 2: That's a long time ago now.
- 40:05Speaker 4: I know, but he was Pro Bowl like seven times
- 40:06Speaker 4: in a row. He got no run with the Bengals.
- 40:08Speaker 4: And now it's him. Trey Henderson gets no run. He'll
- 40:11Speaker 4: get some run when he makes a statement here.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Yeah, and by the way, we need to get back
- 40:13Speaker 2: to that vicious Ravens defense. It can't be all Lamar
- 40:17Speaker 2: all the time. If they want to win again, and
- 40:19Speaker 2: a lot of people expect them to, it's got to
- 40:20Speaker 2: be with the defense.
- 40:21Speaker 4: Any excuse to mention Ed Reed.
- 40:22Speaker 2: Okay, my last superloftive non-skill player... with the biggest impact
- 40:28Speaker 2: this season. So that means no quarterbacks, no wide receivers,
- 40:30Speaker 2: no running backs. And I'm not even going to give
- 40:32Speaker 2: you a pass rusher. I don't want to hear about
- 40:33Speaker 2: Micah Parsons and Aiden Hutchinson. I want a lineman. And
- 40:36Speaker 2: it's going to be Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson.
- 40:40Speaker 5: Wow.
- 40:40Speaker 2: It's really weird for a team with all these stars
- 40:42Speaker 2: to have a right tackle be their MVP. But I'm
- 40:45Speaker 2: telling you right now, on the field, he's huge. But
- 40:48Speaker 2: when he is out, which has been a little bit
- 40:50Speaker 2: too much in recent years, The Eagles lose their confidence.
- 40:53Speaker 2: He's a mountain of a man. When you're at Eagles practice,
- 40:56Speaker 2: he will block the sun. You don't need sunscreen when
- 40:58Speaker 2: Lane Johnson's around. And they are just so much better. Sorry,
- 41:02Speaker 2: I don't have the exact number of what they are
- 41:04Speaker 2: without him, but I know it's bad, Paul.
- 41:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I would co-sign that without looking up. They're bad
- 41:08Speaker 4: when Lane Johnson's not there. He's fantastic. And if you
- 41:10Speaker 4: look at how the Eagles were built over the years,
- 41:13Speaker 4: Dennis Kell, all those different players on the offensive line,
- 41:15Speaker 4: Fletcher Cox in the defensive line, They win with those
- 41:18Speaker 4: sides of the ball. If those guys don't get the pub,
- 41:20Speaker 4: they go to the Pro Bowl every year.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. We had a lot of offensive line injuries
- 41:24Speaker 2: in Philadelphia last year. It really hurt Saquon Barkley, so
- 41:27Speaker 2: it's not just about Jalen Hurts. They've got to get
- 41:29Speaker 2: that run game going to protect Hurts, and it starts
- 41:32Speaker 2: with Lane Johnson.
- 41:32Speaker 4: Good job. I can't wait for the players to get
- 41:34Speaker 4: their awards. All right, coming up next, constructive criticism and
- 41:38Speaker 4: a lot, lot more, plus the feel-good. Stick around. This
- 41:41Speaker 4: is Not So Fast.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast, NBC Sports Now Peacock.
- 41:46Speaker 2: I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Paps. Now, every day here,
- 41:49Speaker 2: we have leftovers. There's so many things we want to
- 41:51Speaker 2: talk about, but we get to the leftovers, and we
- 41:54Speaker 2: haven't talked enough today about George Kittle, Paul. He's back.
- 41:58Speaker 2: There is no designation. He is playing for the San
- 42:00Speaker 2: Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia.
- 42:04Speaker 4: Melbourne? Melbourne?
- 42:05Speaker 2: I've been hearing it all over the place.
- 42:07Speaker 4: Definitely Australia. I checked it.
- 42:08Speaker 2: All right.
- 42:09Speaker 4: How good do you feel about Kittle? I know he's
- 42:10Speaker 4: a little banged up.
- 42:11Speaker 2: I'm a little worried about Kittle. I'm not going to
- 42:13Speaker 2: lie to you. He's one of those guys who does
- 42:15Speaker 2: not have a change-up pitch. He goes full speed on
- 42:19Speaker 2: every single play. And he's a bit magical. Like, things
- 42:22Speaker 2: work out for him. But I think they need him healthy.
- 42:25Speaker 2: I would not even send him to Australia. But he's
- 42:28Speaker 2: so excited. I've seen him do some press conferences over there.
- 42:31Speaker 2: He's become the ambassador for the NFL because he's got
- 42:33Speaker 2: the best personality ever. But, you know, he's 32, got
- 42:37Speaker 2: hurt in January. This is a rush job to me,
- 42:41Speaker 2: and I'm very nervous.
- 42:41Speaker 4: All right, 49ers, Rams tonight. I don't know what time
- 42:44Speaker 4: zone it is. I don't know what time they're playing.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Sean McVay pregame. Can I give you a snippet?
- 42:48Speaker 4: You're going bulletin board versus bulletin board?
- 42:50Speaker 2: Let me give you a snippet of Sean McVay.
- 42:51Speaker 4: Go.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Everyone's saying that we have the wrong sleep science, that
- 42:54Speaker 2: we did this wrong. He basically is going to be
- 42:57Speaker 2: so desperate to prove that he didn't have the wrong
- 42:59Speaker 2: strategy by flying over at the last minute. He's going
- 43:02Speaker 2: to get the team fired up like never before. I
- 43:04Speaker 2: got the Rams 29-24. In reality, though, I just think
- 43:08Speaker 2: the Rams are a better team. They're a more well-rounded
- 43:10Speaker 2: team right now, even without Aaron Donald. I think Stafford,
- 43:14Speaker 2: while healthy, is going to really step up here. Now, listen,
- 43:17Speaker 2: Kyle Shanahan has generally had the Rams number. So this
- 43:19Speaker 2: is going to be a really close game. But I
- 43:21Speaker 2: think the Rams feel a lot of pressure, and they're
- 43:23Speaker 2: veterans of the liver.
- 43:24Speaker 4: By the way, 29 is a very wonky score, and
- 43:26Speaker 4: I like it here at Not So Fast. We don't
- 43:28Speaker 4: like round numbers here. I'm going to go with the
- 43:30Speaker 4: 49ers because they shouldn't win this game. You know, the 49ers,
- 43:32Speaker 4: no one's picking them. Everyone thinks that the Rams are
- 43:34Speaker 4: the biggest heavyweight of all time. I only want to
- 43:37Speaker 4: see the 49ers win, not rooting, but to see how
- 43:39Speaker 4: Sean McVay explains the sleep schedule and the travel schedule
- 43:42Speaker 4: thing because he'll be asked about it. forever if they
- 43:44Speaker 4: somehow lose.
- 43:44Speaker 2: By the way, all overseas games end in like a
- 43:47Speaker 2: 15 or a 19. There's never been 28-21. Overseas, it
- 43:51Speaker 2: was a weird, weird game.
- 43:52Speaker 4: Well, they used different math over there. The metric system
- 43:54Speaker 4: has something to do with it. All right, a little
- 43:56Speaker 4: more leftovers here. Bobby Plump, if you don't know the name,
- 43:58Speaker 4: happy birthday to Bobby Plump. Age 90. He was the,
- 44:02Speaker 4: if you remember Hickory, the movie Hoosiers, he was part
- 44:05Speaker 4: of the Milan Miracle, Milan High School. He was the guy,
- 44:08Speaker 4: Bobby Plump, who hit the shot at the end of
- 44:09Speaker 4: the game. He actually stood there for four minutes before
- 44:12Speaker 4: he took the shot. and then Jimmy Chitwood did in
- 44:14Speaker 4: the movie with Gene Hackman.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Okay, so Hoosiers is a documentary, basically, is what I'm hearing.
- 44:19Speaker 4: Hoosiers is based on the Milan Miracle, Milan High School, 1954.
- 44:24Speaker 4: Bobby Plump hit the shot. against Crispus Atticus High School,
- 44:27Speaker 4: and they won the whole thing.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Now, what about the backstory where Jimmy Chitwood.
- 44:29Speaker 4: Actually, check that. Not Crispus Atticus.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Jimmy Chitwood was going to leave the team, and then
- 44:33Speaker 2: he came back because he liked the coaches. All that.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Bobby Plump, too?
- 44:36Speaker 4: That's more Hollywood. I think that's more Hollywood.
- 44:37Speaker 2: Got it, got it.
- 44:38Speaker 4: Bobby Plump, age 90, did hit the shot.
- 44:40Speaker 7: Okay.
- 44:40Speaker 4: All right, it's time for a little constructive criticism, something
- 44:42Speaker 4: we did good, bad, or ugly. Pearl, if your new
- 44:45Speaker 4: shirt is in play as a topic. Here we go.
- 44:47Speaker 4: Constructive criticism. First one. CyHawk Week.
- 44:51Speaker 2: Ooh, yes.
- 44:52Speaker 4: I'm a huge Cyclone fan. Iowa State at Iowa. Hawkeye
- 44:56Speaker 4: buddies invited me to their tailgate and seats for the game,
- 44:58Speaker 4: but he's an Iowa State fan. How subdued, frantic, polite
- 45:02Speaker 4: should I be? If you're hanging with friends at a
- 45:04Speaker 4: tailgate and you don't agree on the teams, you could poke,
- 45:07Speaker 4: you could jab, just don't go for the knockout punch.
- 45:10Speaker 4: Have a few drinks, eat a few bratwurst, and keep
- 45:12Speaker 4: it friendly, as we say.
- 45:13Speaker 2: Well, my sense of Iowa fans is generally they're pretty nice.
- 45:16Speaker 4: But Iowa State seems to ramp it up a little bit.
- 45:19Speaker 2: But still, it's not Giants-Cowboys. You're not going to get
- 45:22Speaker 2: beat up for rooting for the other team? I don't
- 45:24Speaker 2: think so. Or maybe you are.
- 45:25Speaker 4: No, they'll probably make fun of whatever you're wearing, but
- 45:28Speaker 4: still offer you a brat.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Yeah, see, I'm very careful because I grew up in Philadelphia.
- 45:32Speaker 2: That's different. If you come into the link wearing an
- 45:35Speaker 2: opposing team's jersey, it's bad.
- 45:36Speaker 4: They don't do that in Ames or Iowa City. All right,
- 45:38Speaker 4: here you go. Next one for constructive criticism, Perloff. How
- 45:41Speaker 4: is it possible the Bears have still not had– wow,
- 45:43Speaker 4: did you set this one up? The Bears have still
- 45:45Speaker 4: not had a 4,000-yard passer. Well, by choice, by conscious choice.
- 45:48Speaker 4: We want to focus on the running game for 100 years.
- 45:50Speaker 4: That's what the Bears wanted to do. It does feel
- 45:53Speaker 4: like Kayla Williams was close last year and could get 4,000.
- 45:56Speaker 4: Bears fans don't care. I know you want to check
- 45:59Speaker 4: that box at 4,000 yards, but just beat the Packers
- 46:02Speaker 4: in advance in the playoffs.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Well, it's funny because Coach Ben Johnson said they were
- 46:05Speaker 2: going to have a record-setting offense. Yeah, just get to 4,000.
- 46:08Speaker 2: I think Eric Kramer is still the franchise's leading passer.
- 46:11Speaker 4: Good poll.
- 46:12Speaker 2: It's bizarre. It is completely bizarre they haven't hit this number.
- 46:15Speaker 2: That being said, they like to run the ball, Paul,
- 46:18Speaker 2: so I wouldn't be surprised if Ben Johnson was a
- 46:19Speaker 2: little conservative.
- 46:20Speaker 4: There were years where they aspired for a 3,000-yard pass.
- 46:24Speaker 4: All right, last one for constructive criticism. I think we
- 46:27Speaker 4: have one more left. Constructive criticism, here we go. Let's
- 46:30Speaker 4: check this one out, Perloff. Rye, the librarian, I think
- 46:34Speaker 4: people are sleeping on the Titans this year as a
- 46:36Speaker 4: potential wildcard team. They make a lot of sneaky offseason moves.
- 46:39Speaker 4: And I'm curious to see how Cam Ward does. So
- 46:42Speaker 4: sneaky that we don't know about them.
- 46:43Speaker 2: Well, yeah, and then they did a rope-a-dope in the preseason. Basically,
- 46:47Speaker 2: Cam Ward played terribly.
- 46:49Speaker 4: Oh, it's a setup?
- 46:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a setup. I mean, he does have
- 46:52Speaker 2: good receivers. He's got Carnell Tate, Calvin Ridley. They have
- 46:55Speaker 2: had a running game. We love Robert Sala. Did you
- 46:57Speaker 2: hang out with Robert Sala in Tahoe with the Dan
- 46:59Speaker 2: Patrick show?
- 47:00Speaker 4: We saw him, his beautiful skull. It's completely jacked. Very frustrating.
- 47:03Speaker 4: Good looking guy.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Yeah, no, there's a lot of people in on the
- 47:06Speaker 2: Titans team. Cam Ward, second-year jump. Second-year quarterbacks can make
- 47:10Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. I love Cam Ward. You never know
- 47:12Speaker 2: what's going to happen when he drops back. He might
- 47:14Speaker 2: scramble 30 yards backwards and then hit a backup tight
- 47:17Speaker 2: end 50 yards down the field. I'm into the Titans.
- 47:20Speaker 2: I hope they're good.
- 47:21Speaker 4: Yeah, Cam's going to complete it to somebody. Our team,
- 47:23Speaker 4: your team, whatever team. All right, let's get to the feel-good.
- 47:25Speaker 4: Something to leave you feeling good before the day as
- 47:27Speaker 4: you go off.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Here we go, Pearl.
- 47:32Speaker 4: The feel-good for today. Oh, of course. White Sox Pirates,
- 47:35Speaker 4: bring your own dog night. Come and pet the puppy,
- 47:39Speaker 4: you kids. Come hang out.
- 47:42Speaker 2: I'm noticing that a lot of the field goals happen
- 47:44Speaker 2: in baseball crowds.
- 47:45Speaker 4: Yeah, because baseball, I don't know who started this, bringing
- 47:47Speaker 4: a dog to a game night. I don't know if
- 47:49Speaker 4: it's the Pirates or not, but it seems to be
- 47:50Speaker 4: catching on.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Now, what if it's not a good boy and you
- 47:53Speaker 2: have a dog? What if the dog is getting a
- 47:55Speaker 2: little out of control, sees a hot dog three rows up?
- 47:58Speaker 4: That would be a problem. That would be a problem.
- 47:59Speaker 2: That would not be feel good.
- 48:00Speaker 4: When you buy your ticket, you buy the ride. And
- 48:02Speaker 4: what happens, you get bit by a dog, you get
- 48:03Speaker 4: bit by a dog.
- 48:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:05Speaker 2: By the way, my takeaway from the show is about
- 48:07Speaker 2: the urinals in your house. That's the biggest deal to me.
- 48:09Speaker 4: We all aspire to have one. All right, thanks for
- 48:11Speaker 4: watching Not So Fast. Dan Patrick's show tomorrow on NBC
- 48:14Speaker 4: Sports Now. And stick around, hang with us, get you
- 48:16Speaker 4: a recap of the entire game, 49ers-Rams.
- 48:18Speaker 2: Yeah. No more sleep science talk after this game. No,
- 48:21Speaker 2: we're all going.
- 48:23Speaker 8: To take a nap.
- 48:28Speaker 2: We'll be right back.
