- 0:00Speaker 1: Toby and Chili, mornings on demand on 97.1 Wash FM.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Well, the good news is it's Wednesday. You're halfway through
- 0:08Speaker 2: what is a short week. Hopefully that compensates for the
- 0:12Speaker 2: pain you felt yesterday when you tried to get back
- 0:14Speaker 2: up and do the hard shift back into the routine
- 0:17Speaker 2: of life. It's 97.1 Wash FM. Toby and Chili in
- 0:21Speaker 2: the morning. Good morning, Chili. How are you feeling today?
- 0:24Speaker 3: I'm feeling good. I'm so far grateful. I don't have
- 0:28Speaker 3: what you've got, whatever. Gunk, you're fighting so far. Although
- 0:33Speaker 3: I probably just jinxed it.
- 0:34Speaker 2: No, don't jinx it. This is a call due to cold.
- 0:37Speaker 2: To paraphrase Forrest. But I tested negative on all the
- 0:41Speaker 2: tests because, you know, it's important to, I think, look
- 0:44Speaker 2: out for your colleagues, which means test and don't come
- 0:47Speaker 2: rolling up in here.
- 0:48Speaker 4: People are going to.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Come to work sick regardless. Well, but I mean, if
- 0:51Speaker 2: you've got that COVID kind of a thing, that's not bueno.
- 0:54Speaker 4: It's like a common cold for me, usually. So, yeah.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, that's how I'm feeling right about now. Tested
- 1:00Speaker 2: negative on everything. Just got to plow through it. But
- 1:05Speaker 2: you know what? With the help of great meds like
- 1:07Speaker 2: Mucinex and having a doctor's appointment later today, I'm sure
- 1:11Speaker 2: I'll be just fine. Can I have a Z-Pak or
- 1:16Speaker 2: something that wipes this out? Stat. Or else I'm just
- 1:19Speaker 2: going to go home and curl up in my bed
- 1:21Speaker 2: again and try to sleep it out and hope it works.
- 1:24Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I did that all holiday weekend. I'm going to try
- 1:27Speaker 2: not to do it today, but you never know. Why
- 1:30Speaker 2: are you feeling good? You know the number, 866-927-4361. Give
- 1:33Speaker 2: us a call. If you have a home remedy for
- 1:36Speaker 2: this cough due to cold, I'll listen to that. Please.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I'll take notes. And thank you in advance. And by
- 1:43Speaker 2: the way, we've got the news coming up. Top stories
- 1:45Speaker 2: at the top of the hour.
- 1:46Speaker 5: Chilling.
- 1:47Speaker 2: What's going on this morning?
- 1:48Speaker 3: Starting next year, even your dog will be able to
- 1:52Speaker 3: enjoy those Girl Scout cookies. I'll explain coming up in
- 1:56Speaker 3: just a few minutes.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Central Command says the U.S.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Has struck five Iranian oil tankers after the Revolutionary Guard
- 2:08Speaker 3: twice targeted a U.S. Navy warship with missiles in the
- 2:12Speaker 3: past two days. The ship evaded the attacks and the U.S.
- 2:15Speaker 3: is now ramping up both military and economic pressure on
- 2:18Speaker 3: Iran as peace talks stalled. Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch is
- 2:23Speaker 3: retiring after seven years leading the institution. He says his
- 2:28Speaker 3: decision is not because of any pressure from the administration,
- 2:31Speaker 3: which has been pushing for changes at the Smithsonian. A
- 2:35Speaker 3: National Guardsman patrolling D.C. is facing charges after allegedly pulling
- 2:39Speaker 3: a gun on a fellow soldier during an argument last
- 2:42Speaker 3: month This happened outside of Popeyes on 8th Street. 21-year-old
- 2:46Speaker 3: Zion Mitchell is accused of drawing his weapon during a
- 2:49Speaker 3: dispute over hairstyle regulations. A Southwest flight from Reagan National
- 2:55Speaker 3: to Houston had to make an emergency landing at BWI
- 2:58Speaker 3: yesterday after striking a bird. The plane landed safely and
- 3:02Speaker 3: passengers were then switched to another plane. Drivers along Route
- 3:06Speaker 3: 355 in Montgomery County should have an easier commute now
- 3:09Speaker 3: that the temporary bus-only lanes are gone between North Bethesda
- 3:12Speaker 3: and Friendship Heights. Crews are removing about seven and a
- 3:15Speaker 3: half miles of bus lane markings. And Girl Scouts are
- 3:20Speaker 3: adding a cookie just for dogs in 2027. It's called
- 3:24Speaker 3: Patch Pals, a soft baked blueberry muffin flavored treat. Now
- 3:29Speaker 3: humans are also getting a new cookie. It's allergen friendly
- 3:33Speaker 3: and it's called Sparkables. Forecast today, sunny skies, hot highs
- 3:38Speaker 3: around 90. Right now, 68 in Oakton.
- 3:41Speaker 2: And that is the news. Good morning. It's 97.1 Wash

- 3:47Speaker 2: top stories at the top of the hour. Coming up
- 3:50Speaker 2: in just moments, how are you doing this morning? Well,
- 3:54Speaker 2: we'll attempt to help give you a little more fuel
- 3:58Speaker 2: for your day, as it were, with your morning mindset.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Some words we hope inspire you. Headed into D.C. now,
- 4:06Speaker 2: 95 northbound through Woodbridge. Well, thank you for letting us
- 4:09Speaker 2: be a part of your morning. Toby and Chili in
- 4:11Speaker 2: the morning. It is 97.1 Wash FM on this Wednesday,
- 4:16Speaker 2: halfway through another week, and it's time now for your
- 4:19Speaker 2: morning mindset.
- 4:20Speaker 3: This is where we find a quote and share it
- 4:21Speaker 3: with you to think about as you take on the
- 4:24Speaker 3: rest of your day.
- 4:25Speaker 2: I love Amy Schumer. Most people do. Her work is
- 4:28Speaker 2: just awesome. She's an incredible human being. And she says...
- 4:33Speaker 2: I say if I'm beautiful, I say if I'm strong.
- 4:37Speaker 2: You will not determine my story. I will. So why
- 4:42Speaker 2: is this important to keep in mind today on some
- 4:44Speaker 2: random Wednesday? Well, it's because everybody's got an opinion about
- 4:47Speaker 2: your story. Cool. They don't get the pen. You do, right?
- 4:53Speaker 2: So write something today that you're proud of. That's right.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Amy Schumer. I say if I'm beautiful, I say if
- 5:00Speaker 2: I'm strong. You will not determine my story. I will.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Keep that in mind. And here's a pen. Write something
- 5:09Speaker 2: compelling today. That's your morning mindset here at 97.1 Wash FM.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Find it if you need it again. It's in our
- 5:16Speaker 2: stories on Insta. You can also get it on the
- 5:18Speaker 2: Toby and Chili page, washfm.com. Just reach out to one
- 5:20Speaker 2: of us. Be happy to send it your way today,
- 5:23Speaker 2: just in case you need it. And stay right there
- 5:26Speaker 2: because next with Toby and Chili in the morning.
- 5:29Speaker 3: BuzzFeed shared a list of products, trends, and even inventions
- 5:32Speaker 3: that were really hyped as the next best thing, but
- 5:35Speaker 3: they ended up fizzling out fast.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Yeah, you'll find out what the list is. Come out.
- 5:42Speaker 2: What did everyone swear was going to be huge and
- 5:47Speaker 2: then we all just stopped caring about it? Toby and
- 5:50Speaker 2: Tilly in the morning. It's 97.1 Wash FM. BuzzFeed's got
- 5:54Speaker 2: a list and it breaks it down pretty succinctly.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Yeah, but I don't know that I agree with all
- 5:58Speaker 4: of these.
- 5:59Speaker 3: So like number one, I totally see the tattoos that
- 6:01Speaker 3: were meant to fade after a few months. that trend
- 6:04Speaker 3: never quite made it big. I don't even remember that being.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I think it was bigger with the younger, like the,
- 6:12Speaker 2: the younger generation, like my daughter's generation.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Not wanting to commit. Um, 3d movies is on here.
- 6:20Speaker 4: I don't know that that's, we do still go see
- 6:22Speaker 4: 3d movies.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Especially when it's some sort of a Pixar movie or
- 6:25Speaker 3: cartoon or whatever. Yeah.
- 6:27Speaker 2: But here's the thing. I have a 3d TV, um,
- 6:30Speaker 2: It's fine, but it's sitting in my garage right now.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Because I got a new one and I decided I
- 6:35Speaker 2: really didn't need the 3D TV because there just wasn't
- 6:38Speaker 2: enough content to watch in 3D in the living room.
- 6:41Speaker 4: I do agree with Zima. Remember that beverage?
- 6:43Speaker 5: Sure.
- 6:44Speaker 2: People used to put Jolly Ranchers in the Zima.
- 6:46Speaker 4: It did make it better.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I was never the biggest fan of the Zima.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Uh google plus that's something you.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Would have used or wanted yeah that was their attempt
- 6:56Speaker 2: to do something like facebook didn't last failed goodbye same
- 6:59Speaker 2: thing with google glass who ended up getting that google
- 7:03Speaker 2: glass me oh yeah that was a lot of money
- 7:07Speaker 2: i'll never get.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Back The Segway is also on here.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 7:11Speaker 2: It was supposed to change transportation.
- 7:13Speaker 3: It was supposed to make it so much easier. People
- 7:15Speaker 3: were not going to do bikes anymore. They were going
- 7:16Speaker 3: to do the Segway.
- 7:17Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 4: I don't think everybody has good balance.
- 7:20Speaker 2: No.
- 7:21Speaker 3: And then, you know, Crystal Pepsi, curved TVs, hoverboards. Those
- 7:25Speaker 3: are just some of the other ones on that list.
- 7:27Speaker 4: But it is. It's a gamble.
- 7:28Speaker 3: You come up with a new thing, especially if it's
- 7:31Speaker 3: tech related, and you're convinced the whole world is going
- 7:34Speaker 3: to get on board with it. And no, that's not
- 7:36Speaker 3: always the case.
- 7:37Speaker 2: So keep that in mind when you see news of
- 7:39Speaker 2: a foldable phone this week.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Oh, stop.
- 7:43Speaker 2: I'm just saying.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Is that going to be your next prediction for the bus?
- 7:46Speaker 2: I'm not completely sold that it's necessary. It's cool. Don't
- 7:52Speaker 2: get me wrong. But you know what's cooler? Having money
- 7:56Speaker 2: in the bank. truth. Toby and Chili in the morning.
- 7:59Speaker 2: It's 97.1 Wash FM. What was supposed to be the
- 8:03Speaker 2: future that you haven't thought about in years? Go down

- 8:26Speaker 3: in just a few.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Think about what teachers across the DMV do before the
- 8:30Speaker 2: first bell even rings for school. They're buying supplies with
- 8:35Speaker 2: their own money. They're getting their classrooms ready for a
- 8:37Speaker 2: new week. They're figuring out how to reach the kid
- 8:41Speaker 2: who might need a little more help today. It's 97.1

- 8:56Speaker 3: get the resources their students need.

- 9:31Speaker 2: The U.S.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Says it struck five Iranian oil tankers yesterday. It was
- 9:36Speaker 3: retaliation after the Revolutionary Guard twice fired ballistic missiles at
- 9:40Speaker 3: a U.S. Navy warship in the past two days. The
- 9:43Speaker 3: man who's led the Smithsonian Institution since 2019 is retiring.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch has worked for the organization for
- 9:52Speaker 3: nearly 40 years and was the first African-American and first
- 9:56Speaker 3: historian to serve in that position. TSA is bringing back
- 10:01Speaker 3: a pre-9-11 tradition at 13 U.S.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Airports.
- 10:05Speaker 3: So starting soon, some non-ticketed visitors will be allowed pass
- 10:10Speaker 3: security to greet or say goodbye to loved ones if
- 10:14Speaker 3: they apply for a pass in advance. Maryland is getting

- 10:30Speaker 3: Arlington County is setting aside $ 50, 000 to help families affected

- 11:14Speaker 4: Highs around 90. Right now, 69 in Bethesda.
- 11:18Speaker 2: That's the news with Toby and Chili in the morning.
- 11:20Speaker 2: You get top stories at the top of the hour. Now,
- 11:22Speaker 2: stay close, because we're going to talk about a conversation
- 11:25Speaker 2: that came up in one of Chili's mom groups about
- 11:27Speaker 2: kids and doctors and when the kids can spend time
- 11:32Speaker 2: on their own with the doctors. You might have some thoughts.
- 11:36Speaker 2: The number is 866-927-4361. Don't be afraid to speak them.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Thanks for listening to us in Centerville right now. As
- 11:44Speaker 2: you make your way out, we're all wondering what version
- 11:46Speaker 2: of 66 we're going to get today. It's 97.1 Wash FM.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Tell me you're chilly in the morning. Let's talk pediatricians
- 11:54Speaker 2: and the growth that comes when our kids grow up
- 11:58Speaker 2: when it comes to seeing a doctor.
- 11:59Speaker 3: So in my mom group, I found out that once
- 12:02Speaker 3: your kid becomes like early teenager, like 13, 14, there's
- 12:06Speaker 3: a moment where the doctor may ask you to leave
- 12:08Speaker 3: the room as the parent so they could be alone
- 12:11Speaker 3: with your child, mainly to ask them probably questions related
- 12:15Speaker 3: to puberty.
- 12:17Speaker 4: And some other things that the child.
- 12:19Speaker 3: May not be as comfortable talking about in front of
- 12:22Speaker 3: mom or dad.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:23Speaker 3: So one of the moms in the mom group said
- 12:24Speaker 3: that she... was not okay with that. So she was like, nope,
- 12:27Speaker 3: I'm going to stay in the room. It's my kid.
- 12:29Speaker 3: I need to know all the things as well. So
- 12:33Speaker 3: she passed on that opportunity. But then it got us,
- 12:36Speaker 3: the rest of the moms, talking about how we would
- 12:38Speaker 3: feel when the time comes. And I have to say,
- 12:40Speaker 3: I know my son's doctor since he was a little baby.
- 12:45Speaker 3: And I would first ask Donato, hey, are you cool
- 12:47Speaker 3: if I walk out? And if he said yes, if
- 12:49Speaker 3: he was comfortable with that, then I would leave the room.
- 12:52Speaker 7: I would feel a.
- 12:55Speaker 3: And I'm just one doctor. But I think that's part
- 12:59Speaker 3: of information gathering. And as long as the doctor looped
- 13:02Speaker 3: me in later on things I need to know, then
- 13:06Speaker 3: I'm OK with it.
- 13:07Speaker 2: That's how doctors get kids to open up. You know,
- 13:10Speaker 2: they remove the variable in the equation, i.e. the parent,
- 13:13Speaker 2: which you have to kind of trust because, you know,
- 13:16Speaker 2: they are doctors and they've been trained to do what
- 13:19Speaker 2: they do. And look, we could talk about the horror
- 13:23Speaker 2: stories we've all heard about. I don't think that that
- 13:26Speaker 2: applies in mass. So you kind of have to trust
- 13:28Speaker 2: the doctor that's been in your life since your childhood.
- 13:31Speaker 2: came into this world.
- 13:33Speaker 3: And you also have to hope that your child could
- 13:35Speaker 3: tell you if anything inappropriate did occur or would occur.
- 13:38Speaker 6: Right.
- 13:38Speaker 3: And I think a lot of this has to do
- 13:41Speaker 3: with going back to what you said. They are professionals.
- 13:43Speaker 3: And if in the end it helps my son, then
- 13:46Speaker 3: I'm all for it.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Anybody got some thoughts this morning? 866-927-4361. Letting your kids
- 13:53Speaker 2: see the doctor alone.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Yes.
- 13:55Speaker 2: No thoughts. I'm certain you have some and we can't
- 14:00Speaker 2: wait to hear them. Once again, if you've got some thoughts,
- 14:03Speaker 2: the number is 866-927-4361. Toby and Chili in the morning.
- 14:08Speaker 2: It is 97.1 Wash FM letting you into one of
- 14:12Speaker 2: Chili's mom groups this morning in a conversation they had
- 14:16Speaker 2: about pediatricians and doctors.
- 14:18Speaker 3: And especially when your child reaches teen years, sometimes they'll
- 14:22Speaker 3: ask you to leave the room while they have a
- 14:25Speaker 3: conversation with your son or daughter. And not every parent
- 14:28Speaker 3: feels comfortable with that option.
- 14:31Speaker 2: No, like Sarah in Fairfax.
- 14:33Speaker 7: And what's the main reason you don't want to leave
- 14:35Speaker 7: your son in there?
- 14:35Speaker 4: Facts.
- 14:52Speaker 3: But they may not feel comfortable having that conversation in
- 14:56Speaker 3: front of you, but they would with the doctor.
- 14:58Speaker 6: If my kids don't feel like they can talk to me,
- 15:01Speaker 6: I need to work on the relationship.
- 15:03Speaker 2: And that's very true, too, Sarah. Thank you for the
- 15:06Speaker 2: call and for your opinions this morning in Fairfax. Rebecca,
- 15:09Speaker 2: good morning in Bethesda. Thoughts?
- 15:12Speaker 6: You know, growing up, kids have to learn confidence and trust.
- 15:15Speaker 6: They have to eliminate weird feelings for kids who have
- 15:18Speaker 6: feelings about their bodies, like, et cetera, in front of
- 15:21Speaker 6: their parents, the obvious stuff.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Indeed.
- 15:23Speaker 3: And how do you handle it with your own children?
- 15:25Speaker 7: You know, it's their doctor.
- 15:27Speaker 6: So I think that, like, at age, like, when they
- 15:30Speaker 6: feel that they want to be with the doctor by themselves,
- 15:34Speaker 6: that they should be allowed to do so.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Yeah. Good stuff, Rebecca, and thank you. And by the way,
- 15:39Speaker 2: if you have some thoughts you want to chime in,
- 15:40Speaker 2: the TalkBack microphone is wide open for them right now.
- 15:43Speaker 2: If you're signed in, listening to us on your iHeart app,

- 16:16Speaker 2: T-Bank Stadium, Baltimore. It's on October 17th. And if you
- 16:21Speaker 2: want to go, stay with 97.1 Wash FM. We're Toby

- 16:38Speaker 1: Coming up on Top Stories, top of the hour.

- 21:36Speaker 2: Chris Brown, we got you tomorrow morning, right around 710
- 21:39Speaker 2: after top stories at the top of the hour with
- 21:41Speaker 2: another round of your nearly impossible question. And next with
- 21:45Speaker 2: Toby and Chili in the morning.
- 21:46Speaker 3: An Australian man wasn't watching where he was walking, and
- 21:50Speaker 3: now he's got $ 15, 000 in his pocket.
- 21:52Speaker 4: You've got to hear this.
- 21:58Speaker 2: 866-927-4361 is the number. Toby and Tilly in the morning
- 22:01Speaker 2: at 97.1 Wash FM. What happened to you because you
- 22:05Speaker 2: weren't paying attention? It's a guy in Australia who scored
- 22:10Speaker 2: $ 15, 000 after slipping right next to a wet floor sign
- 22:14Speaker 2: at McDonald's. He was looking down at his wallet, never
- 22:18Speaker 2: saw it. And this has happened, I think, to people
- 22:22Speaker 2: all over the world, not just this McDonald's.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Well, he was suing for more than $ 2 million.
- 22:28Speaker 4: And he ended up with 15K.
- 22:30Speaker 3: I don't know how he was able to get any
- 22:33Speaker 3: money considering there was a sign that said the floor
- 22:37Speaker 3: is wet and it was on him to pay attention,
- 22:40Speaker 3: but instead he was looking down.
- 22:42Speaker 4: He got very lucky here, truthfully. You know what?
- 22:45Speaker 2: You see these stories about people who are so busy
- 22:47Speaker 2: trying to take a selfie or who are reading some
- 22:50Speaker 2: sort of something on their mobile device and they fall
- 22:53Speaker 2: off a cliff or whatnot. I mean, whose fault is that?
- 22:57Speaker 2: You know whose fault that is? I'm sorry to say it,
- 23:00Speaker 2: but yours.
- 23:01Speaker 3: I will say that ignoring signs really is a major
- 23:05Speaker 3: gamble with your life. I saw this at the beach
- 23:08Speaker 3: when we were there. There was a red flag day.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Clearly the current wasn't safe.
- 23:13Speaker 4: And you've always got that one person who's thinking, I'm
- 23:16Speaker 4: a strong swimmer. It doesn't apply to me.
- 23:18Speaker 3: And then you're putting everybody's life at risk, not only yourselves,
- 23:21Speaker 3: but also the lifeguards.
- 23:22Speaker 2: My thoughts on ignoring those handicap signs are well documented lately.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Why?
- 23:28Speaker 2: Because you would not believe how many people do. It's
- 23:32Speaker 2: just ridiculous. Signs, signs everywhere. There's signs everywhere. I know
- 23:38Speaker 2: it's messing up the scenery. It's making us lose our minds.
- 23:41Speaker 2: But still, you've got to follow what the signs say.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Now, do you know somebody who ignored a sign and
- 23:45Speaker 3: then paid for it by getting injured or creating a disaster?
- 23:48Speaker 2: No, thank God. But maybe you do. 866-927-4361 is the number.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Tell us your story. And by the way, we'll get
- 23:57Speaker 2: to those stories coming up. News first, though, right around

- 24:16Speaker 3: the details coming up on that in just a few minutes.

- 27:41Speaker 3: He was looking down at his wallet even though was
- 27:43Speaker 3: his fault, he was awarded money.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Distracted walking.
